MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 1, Episode 20 - The Escape - full transcript

Just when Mac has finished soccer-coaching the boys of a North African Catholic orphanage, Brian Ashford's sisters Sara convinces him to break her innocently framed brother Brian, a medical missionary, from prison. So Mac lightly assaults two cops who beat up an old peddler, and is told by the warden ('commandant') Western privilege is no longer his share, nothing for nothing. Mac befriends old Frenchman Francois Villars, who helps him find out trustee Khan is the key man in luxury who runs a PCP drugs lab, with whom he ingratiates himself thanks to his technical fixing skills, and that Brian is in the political ward. The warden has every room wired, including where Mac's visiting 'wife' Ashley comes arrange transport to wait outside for the boys' escape, but Mac knew about the wiring, so his escape plan is double-bottomed. However there are more two-faced hidden agendas, in- and outside...

MacGyver: Sometimes
when they're after you,

when you're just
about surrounded...

You realize just how seriously
north African kids take soccer.

MacGyver, you let
'em steal that ball.

No way.

They just play better
soccer than I do.

Oh, after the way you
coached them, I don't doubt it.

( Organ playing )

It is so wonderful
to hear music again.

Thank you.

Oh, you bet.

It just needed a
couple of adjustments.

That earthquake kinda
knocked it out of whack,

but it's, it's a good organ.

And you are a good man,

but a sneaky soccer player.

Right! It's here!

Let's go!

Sister: MacGyver,
what is all this?

It's a little surprise.

But we are deeply
grateful for all the medicines

you brought, but what is this?

Oh, it's a secret surprise.

( Laughing ): Oh...

Sarah!

- Here, let me help you.
- Thank you.

It's the clothing I promised.

Sister: Wonderful!
Oh, you are a blessing.

Both of you.

MacGyver, this is Sarah ashford.

How do you do?

Sister: I have told
her all about you.

Not everything.

Well, she seems to
know more than I do.

Nothing discreditable,
I assure you.

Mac, Sarah needs

a favor.

Be nice to her, huh?

At your orders, sister.

Thank you.

Well, we can't disobey
the mother superior.

What can I do for
you, miss ashford?

I'd like you to break my
brother out of prison here.

Ah...

Brian is the only
brother I've got.

He's a medical missionary.

All he wanted to do was help.

He's in harosh
prison now, accused,

tried... and sentenced

For trying to save human lives.

Well, like the man said,

"No good deed goes unpunished."

Sarah, what were the
charges against him?

Well, after the earthquake,

he brought in a very
valuable shipment

of relief supplies.

Valuable?

Worth enough money

for someone to
show some interest?

Yes, exactly.

The government of
this benighted country

tried to confiscate
the supplies,

so Brian hid them.

Well, I think it's about
time we got him out.

He's in a maximum-security
military prison.

Kind of makes it
interesting, doesn't it?

No, no...

( Speaking arabic )

Madame!

You sure you can get
word to your brother?

Visits are simple

to arrange... all one needs

is enough bribe money.

The only thing you can't buy
at harosh is a man's freedom.

All right, then you
arrange for the cars,

and as soon as I get in

And get the lay of
the land, I'll signal.

I'll be watching.

You know, I'm beginning to
believe it might be possible.

Mac, you'll be
running a horrible risk.

I know I asked, but you
were just a name then,

not a man I like.

Well, it's too late now, Sarah.

I've got my orders.

What about the rest of the plan?

Well, I can't figure that out

Until I get inside...

But it's a nice thing
about this country:

They make it real
easy to get into prison.

What are you going to do?

( Policemen shouting in arabic )

Just wait for my signal.

All right, guys, nice.

Two points, take down.
Cops beat peasant.

Oh, that's what I like to
see: Tax dollars at work.

( Policemen laughing)

Yeah.

Listen, guys, for
a job well done,

I'd like to buy you a drink.

Hope a sodie-pop'll do for you.

( Policemen shouting )

Come on, come on.

I understand you assaulted
two police officers, MacGyver.

Well, it seemed like a
good idea at the time.

They were leaning pretty heavy

on a peddler out there.

Do you still think
it's a good idea?

Well, they left him and beat
on me, if that's what you mean.

Oh, I'll explain
precisely what I mean.

You are no longer an American

or privileged or a westerner.

You are garbage.
You are a convict.

You see, here, we
have... true democracy.

All are equal in the dirt.

The intelligent rise,

and the stupid
remain in the dirt

or are buried there.

Clear?

Very.

You have no money.

I suggest you find some.

Otherwise, you will have
neither shelter nor food.

What, you don't feed us in here?

Of course... At
reasonable prices.

Uh-huh.

So, how do I come
about this money?

Earn it. Beg it.

Find yourself a protector.

As of now,

your survival is your
responsibility, American.

Villars,

Take him away.

Relax. He gives that same speech

to every foreigner
who comes in here.

It's only 80% true.

That's comforting.

Did you really
assault two police

Over a street peddler?

Over an old man
who was being beaten

without reason.

Noble, but foolish,
wouldn't you say?

Yeah... but it sure felt great.

I'm sure it did, my friend.

I'm François villars.

MacGyver. Call me Mac.

( Men shouting )

Commandant (
Over P.A.): Attention!

Hafiz Ben achmed,
report to my office.

Hafiz Ben achmed, come to
the commandant's office at once!

Who lives here?

Khan.

Don't stare. Khan
doesn't like it.

Oh, yeah?

- Which one's Khan?
- Villars: The man with the bald head.

He runs the prison,
and fuad is his dog.

MacGyver: That
overweight enforcer he's got?

Fuad killed five men

with his bare hands.

Two of them inside the prison.

Ah...

Interesting.

You want him?

Not yet. Ask around.

See if anyone knows
something about him.

Only three sorts of
Americans end up here...

Drug dealers,

soldiers of fortune...

Or madmen.

I want to know which...

So I can use him
or get rid of him.

I'll make coffee. You
take the top bunk.

You're doing me a
considerable favor, François.

MacGyver, you're American.

I am... was French.

Different nations,
different cultures.

We're both foreigners.

We can at least talk together.

Consider.

We shall have ample
time for conversation.

Now, with all due
respect, François,

I don't plan to
be here that long.

Escape?

Every new man
talks about escape.

Nobody succeeds.

Well, maybe it's about time

I expanded the realm of
possibilities around here.

You play soccer?

MacGyver: Badly. That olive oil?

Don't tell me an
American is interested

In cuisine?

Actually, I'm not.

Mind if I borrow this?

Villars: Be my guest.

Ah, you can look,

but you can't touch

that little tint of blue

Which prisoners call... the sky.

You may be right, François,

but they can only lock me up,

Not my mind.

MacGyver, what are you doing?

A little experiment.

What sort of experiment?

François, the first
men to fly over Paris

Were French... The
montgolfier brothers.

Of course.

The first... hot air balloons.

Mon Dieu!

Marveilleux.

You are sending a signal.

Outside contact.

All right!

( Engine starts )

Villars: I am starting
to see the beginnings

of a very good plan.

Yeah, it's kind of put
together on the cuff,

but it just might work.

You wanna come along?

Yes.

But no.

I have been here
five years, mon ami,

For the crime of
not bribing a judge.

I have a wife, five children

and six more months to go.

I understand.

But I will help you.

No.

No, you shouldn't
jeopardize everything

this close to release.

It's not worth the risk.

MacGyver, the great risk
in this ugly little prison world

Is that we forget to be human.

We forget we have
pride, feelings, courage.

I would like to
remember those things.

And, besides, how can
one not help a maniac

Who assaults two policemen
in the name of justice?

Thank you.

First thing I have to do

is contact a prisoner by
the name of Brian ashford.

He's a political.

Mm-hmm.

That's a special wing.

Heavy security, extra
guards, every cell bugged.

Fuad: You!

Khan wants to see you.

Oh, yeah? What for?

Mac!

( Grunts )

I'm fuad!

( Fuad laughing )

Fuad!

( Yells )

( Cheering )

Listen, I hope you're
taking this personally.

What is this?

( Growling )

No!

Not yet.

( Soft, slightly
distorted music playing )

( Groans )

Thanks.

Clean yourself up.

And don't dirty my carpet.

I am Khan.

Yeah, I've heard about you.

Rumor has it you run the joint.

MacGyver: It's phase.

Khan: What?

Phase... your speakers
are out of phase.

Mind if I borrow this?

( Music continues )

Khan: Do you know
what you are doing?

Well, I sure hope so.

You interest me, American.

Yeah?

Soldier of fortune?

Political?

I know, I know.

Drug dealer. Smuggler.

A man motivated
by intelligent greed.

There. I think that's got it.

( Undistorted music plays )

Very good.

- Thanks.
- ( Turns off music )

( Mechanical whirring )

You know, it wouldn't
be much harder

to fix that refrigerator
in your pcp lab.

It's awfully noisy.

It's not efficient.

You seem to be very
well informed, MacGyver.

Yeah, well, word on the
yard is you deal drugs.

The easiest one to
manufacture is pcp.

I saw the vent outside and
heard the noises in here.

Pieces all seem to fit.

Very impressive.

Thanks.

There's one piece
that doesn't fit, though.

The last thing management
needs around here

is a prison full of dust heads

busting up the place.

I make it in here, but
I sell it on the outside.

Well, there ya are.
If it's a business,

why not make it more efficient?

Less risk. Better quality stuff.

Efficient. You know the process?

You bet.

Could double your output.

My formula.

What do you want in return?

Half an hour with Brian ashford.

In private.

He's in security section.

I know, but what is
your business with him?

It's private.

I could have fuad ask you.

Yeah, you sure could.

But it'd be kinda tough

For me to fix up your
pcp lab if I was dead.

I think we have an
understanding, MacGyver.

Good.

Well, we had an
understanding, all right.

I think Khan figured
me for a sucker,

and I knew the commandant
had every cell bugged,

so I guess my plan was working.

For who?

Brian ashford.

All right.

He's on exercise hour.

Posture, posture.

Name's MacGyver.

Yes, I was told to expect you.

Frankly, I'm surprised
you got this far.

Well, we're gonna go a
lot further than this, Brian.

I'm gonna get ya outta here.

Brian: Oh? How?

MacGyver: Working on that.

With your sister,
as a matter of fact.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Well, I'm grateful.

Frankly, you've
taken a terrible risk.

Well, I don't know.

Sarah told me about all
the work you do with kids.

How can I help you?

Well, first of all,

You can tell me about the
security system around here.

How many locks, who has keys,

when the guards change shift,

and especially
the night security.

But most importantly...

when we fly the
huey choppers in here,

can you still handle
a .30 millimeter?

Definitely, yes.

So it's an aerial
assault, is it then?

Yeah, for the most part.

Your sister tells me
you stashed $10 million

Before you were busted.

Brian: Actually it was 12.

MacGyver: Ah, well,
then you can see

you're well worth
the effort for us.

My people are willing to
use gunships to free you.

Well, that's, that's remarkable.

I'm delighted
you're handling this.

It's good to meet you, too.

But I must admit you're
not quite what I expected

In a medical missionary.

Oh, well, never be taken
in by surface appearances.

Actually, I raised a little hell

before I came to
believe in heaven.

Ah, good.

And every now and
then, a minor miracle.

Well, I'm not sure
I can provide that,

But I'll definitely
get you out of here.

Well, I pray that you're right.

And may god be with you.

Khan: As I said, excellency,
he's not what he seems.

And you were correct.

You want MacGyver removed?

No. Soldier of
fortune. Helicopters.

12 million American dollars.

No, I want to know
every possible thing.

Everything.

And then?

And then... you kill him.

Villars: Tell me about
your visit to the political

security section.

Well, I just wanted

to prepare my friend
for the breakout.

With Khan's help?

MacGyver, Khan
would sell you down

For a second cup of coffee.

Yeah?

Well, sure wish you'd
consider coming with us.

The water's fine.

I'll miss you, my friend.

Well, now that sounds like
you think I'm gonna make it.

I have my doubts.

But some men aren't
designed to be caged.

And, besides, I had forgotten
how good it is to have a friend.

To help a friend.

Thank you, François.

So... what can I do?

Well, I know you can get
into the commandant's office,

but do you know how to
run the P.A. system here?

Mm-hmm.

MacGyver,

your wife is here.

Oh, yeah?

MacGyver: So, how's she lookin'?

Very beautiful.

Thank you.

Darling.

Did you see Brian?

Yeah. He's quite a guy.

How did you
arrange this so fast?

I told you.

Bribery works

Wonders in here.

Oh, have I missed you!

MacGyver: I missed you, too.

At least we have tonight.

Oh, heh-heh-heh...

Tell me about this
lawyer you've got.

Lawyer?

Of course, but can't
we talk about that later?

( Whispers ): I've
got the vehicles.

When, how, where?

Tomorrow.

High noon.

MacGyver: That's when
the choppers come in.

Northwest gate.

Are you positive?

Would I tell you I
loved you if I didn't?

Sarah: Mac, I didn't realize
how much I'd missed you.

( Excited shouting and chatter )

It's a breakaway.

Shoot! Great shot!

All in the footwork, big guy!

Hey, just go in.

You bet!

How are you doin'?

Come in.

Pleasant night?

Yeah, it wasn't bad.

Not much privacy
around here, though.

We're a very
close-knit community.

I've kind of noticed that.

So, uh,

How's the stereo workin'?

It's fine.

This way.

( Mechanical whirring )

Yeah, you know, I figure
we can triple your output.

All you'd need is a
couple of adjustments

On this thing.

Fix it.

By the way, how was your
visit with Brian ashford?

Oh, it was great!

It was just wonderful.

Very interesting.

He's an old pal, you know?

Khan: Really?

It's very fortunate for you

to find an old friend
in this unlikely place.

Yeah.

You're a lucky man, MacGyver.

Yeah.

( Low humming of fan blades )

( Clattering )

( Rhythmic tapping )

Yes. They have nothing on

MacGyver, nothing.

Oh.

Don't be stupid!

That means he is a professional.

He is obviously
moving on his plan

to break ashford out.

That is why I had to tell you.

You had to tell me
because otherwise,

I would have you gutted

And strung out in the sun!

Why do you talk to me like that?

Perhaps to remind
you of what you are.

Or what I am.

Can't take chances.

I'll have men
stationed on the roof.

You stay with MacGyver.

Thank you, excellency.

( Rhythmic clicking )

MacGyver: The one useful
thing about pcp is, it explodes.

Add a volatile liquid,

and you've got a bomb
you can wear anyplace.

Attention, this is the
commandant speaking.

Lieutenant NASA, report to
the guard post immediately.

All prisoners' privileges
are hereby suspended.

Prisoners are restricted
to the main compound.

There will be no exceptions.

Guard units five, six and eight,

draw automatic
weapons, extra ammunition

and take positions.

Units two, three and seven,
report to the roof at once.

This is a full alert.

MacGyver: Well, the commandant
ought to be getting ready

for those imaginary choppers.

I hate to disappoint a friend,

So I got to create
a little excitement.

The problem isn't
how to blow up the pcp.

The problem is,
timing it... just right.

( Fan blades whirring )

Any spark'll do it.

All you need is
an electrical circuit

That'll close when
you want it to.

Which better happen
when you're out of the room.

Now, the thing about ice...

At a given temperature,
it'll melt at a given rate.

Just about as good as a clock,

Especially if you
don't have a clock.

( Knock at door )

I brought you something.

You will like it.

Ha! Halvah!

Ah, you're a good sort, villars.

Mmm! I'll be sorry
to see you go.

I'll miss you, too.

Or else, I'd leave, uh, today.

Noon.

Commandant: Be alert! The
attack could come at any moment.

Lieutenant: What
about the prisoners, sir?

Commandant: Lieutenant,
the only threat is from the air.

( Low, rhythmic
whirring continues )

Hey, how are you
doin', sunshine?

Listen, I'm all
finished in here.

It's running like a Swiss watch.

So, I guess I'm gone, huh?

Don't hit!

Not quite.

It think it's time our
secrets were out.

Fact: Brian ashford is
worth a great deal of money.

12 million.

Now, I want some details.

Who's paying you? How much?

And how did you
plan to break him out?

Yeah. All right.

You're right about
the 12 million.

I contracted to get
him out of here for 10%.

Why don't you help me out,

and we'll split it?

You expect me to
simply trust you?

Who hired you?

Where do they
plan to take ashford?

Details!

MacGyver: I've got the number

of the Swiss safety deposit box.

I've got the map
and the box number

stashed across the way.

Come on.

I'll give you all the names.

( Dripping onto metal tin )

( Brakes squealing )

( Speaking in native
language, laughing )

( Excited chatter and shouting)

MacGyver: Well,
what do you know?

Hook, line and sinker.

The commandant's plan
was working just fine.

And if his was
workin', so was mine.

Mr. Villars,

didn't you tell me
you could trade this

for some food?

I will try.

Is it in good shape?

- You bet.
- Good.

Let's go.

Move it, man.

Fuad, you are one miserable
son of a diseased camel.

( Water dripping )

( Men shouting,
excited chatter )

Well, guys, this is where it is.

No one ever thinks to
Bury anything under a fire.

Can I borrow your knife?

To dig!

Thank you.

MacGyver: I had
my clocks ticking...

Inside the pcp lab...

( Water dripping )

and in the commandant's office.

( Beeping )

( Water dripping )

( Knocking )

Hey, what's that?

I'm selling him a jacket.

You don't have enough
heat in these cells.

Warder: Yeah, too bad.

( Quietly ): Light the
left pocket and get clear.

The pocket?

Exactly.

But when?

Warder: Hey, come here, come on!

Minutes.

Thank you.

Don't thank me.

You paid for it.

( Door closes )

( Water dripping )

( Beep, recorder clicks on )

( Fan blades on tape sounding
like helicopter whirring )

( Excited chatter )

( Shouting )

( Shouting )

Commandant: They are
coming from the northeast!

From behind the cloud
cover. Sound the alarm!

All right.

( Alarm wailing )

( Men shouting )

( Alarm wailing )

Yeah, well, that's it.

( Yells )

( Water dripping )

( Men shouting )

( Plaster shattering )

( Tapping phone receiver )

Let's go.

( Explosion )

Quickly. Let's go.

( Water dripping )

( Electrical zapping )

( Explosion )

( Shocked yelling )

( Guards shouting, gunshots )

( Shouting )

( Tires screeching )

( Men shouting, explosions )

( Tires screeching )

( Explosions )

( Distant shouting )

Through the tunnel to the right.

( Explosions and shouting )

Let's go.

( Confused shouting, gunshots)

MacGyver: François.

MacGyver.

Go with god, my friend.

Secure the gates!

( Tires screeching )

( Men shouting, alarm wailing )

Helicopter attack.

You moron!

Half of my men
are still up there!

Where's MacGyver?

I don't know.

I thought...

Everything I have is gone.

Oh, no.

For the rest of your sentence,

you will have total and
undisputed possession

of an isolation cell!

Take him away!

I will kill you!

( Distant sirens wailing )

What are you doing?

( Gunshot, steam hissing )

( Gunshot )

Brian: Terrific.

Well, then, the
pursuit stops here.

That's a bloody
marvelous roadblock.

I think we can dispense
with MacGyver now.

I'm sorry, Mac.

What for?

I'm not the all-American
girl you met at the orphanage.

Oh... I get it.

And he's not your brother,

And he's not a
medical missionary.

And I've got egg
all over my face.

A blind faith tends to do
that to people, now doesn't it?

I think it was sister
Ann's confidence in Sarah

that fooled me.

So what is it?

Heroin? Coke? What?

No, just duty.

I'm a representative of
the Soviet government.

My job is to deliver weapons

To our allies in
the third world.

Oh, that's terrific.

Not milk or medicine,
but explosives, guns.

- ( Sirens approaching)
- Congratulations.

Is ol' Brian a Russian, too?

No.

He's a crooked arms dealer

Who stole the weapons from
me to sell on the black market.

But he ended up in harosh prison

before he could
make the delivery.

Yeah, so the deal was

I get him out and you
get the guns back, right?

Look, must we have all
these maudlin little revelations?

Just kill him and
get it over with

before the gendarmes show up.

If I were to kill
anybody, it'd be you.

He's a decent human being.

You are a miserable thief.

All I want from you now
are the arms you've hidden.

Have it your way.

But if it were me, I'd kill him.

You're a sweetheart,
Brian. Thanks.

Nothing personal.

( Car engine starting )

Everything's personal.

No!

- Look out, MacGyver!
- ( Gunshots )

( Tires screeching )

Let me tell you
something, comrade.

I've never hit a woman before,

but you've come darned close.

I don't blame you, Mac.

But I'll sure give you credit.

You sold me a great story.

I had to get those weapons back

Or Brian would sell
them to terrorists.

You trying to tell
me you give a damn

if those weapons are
used on civilians, kids?

( Sirens approaching )

Yes, I do.

( Sirens approaching )

Come on.

( Seagulls squawking )

MacGyver: Do you have any
idea where the weapons might be?

Sarah: They have to be
somewhere in the harbor area.

So we find Brian's car,
we find the weapons?

Unless you're
setting me up again.

Look, Mac, i'm sorry
about that. I really am.

For what? Because of me?

Or because Brian
double-crossed you again?

He's good at that,
have you noticed?

I wish to point out
to you, MacGyver,

the only reason he tricked me

was because I stopped him
from blowing your head off.

Point to you, Sarah.

Well, I'll give you another.

I could have left you
behind at the prison...

I didn't.

Sarah: Now that
Brian is on the loose,

he'll sell that arms shipment

And he'll be out of
the country by tonight.

Mac, we both have a reason
to get those weapons back.

All right, I'll play.

With one condition.

If and when we find the
weapons, we destroy them.

Blow them sky-high.

I agree, Mac.

All right.

Come, I'll show you my wares.

There's the car.

Bingo.

So, gentlemen,
what do you think?

Is this what I promised or what?

Nigerian: Yes.

Now let us discuss price.

Good.

Brian: Our currency.

And as we agreed, you
take the entire shipment.

Man: Ah, but some
of these weapons

are quite old, antique.

Brian: They still kill people,

And I presume
that's what you want.

Nigerian: I do not like jokes...

( Whispers ): Go get the
car. Here are the keys.

Because life is uncertain.

Brian: Fine, and i'm
speaking for myself

Which brings us, I
believe, back to business.

Do you have the cash?

Nigerian: We are prepared to
offer you very attractive terms.

All right, it's half the
money now or no go.

Be careful, you idiot!

Those are grenades
you're playing with.

Man: Now we must negotiate...

MacGyver: Brother Brian
wasn't giving away any bargains.

Some of this stuff probably
dated from the boer war.

The grenades still used
gun powder, which was a plus

because I could use
it to lay a powder train,

Sort of an off-the-cuff,
on-the-floor type fuse.

Light it, and it'd burn right
to the rest of the grenades...

Under a truck full of weapons.

Grenade!

Take cover!

( Explosion )

Go!

Let's get out of here!

Looks like it's going to blow!

( Loud explosions )

Hit it!

Oh!

Watch your fingers there.

( Sister Ann laughing )

It's... it's wonderful.

It's a marvel.

Now how on earth
will we ever thank you?

There's something that
we would like to ask you.

That you take
this off our hands.
