MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 1, Episode 15 - The Enemy Within - full transcript

Four agents have been betrayed by a mole inside the Agency, leading to their deaths. MacGyver must discover who it is before he becomes the next victim.

When
you think about it,

I take on a lot of jobs
nobody else would want.

The question is...
Why do I want 'em?

I find myself asking these
questions more and more,

and rationalizing answers
with stuff like flexible hours,

nice scenery,
all-expense paid vacations

in colorful eastern
European luxury resorts.

But the bottom
line is, I like it.

I actually like
getting into stuff

That makes the old
adrenaline pump.

And I get to meet
some interesting people

Who've made some interesting
career choices themselves.

Guten abend.

Wie geht?

MacGyver.

Kareem.

Skyhook.

Ja.

Fantastisch moves, that one.

Yeah, this one, too.

As soon as you deliver.

Everything is,

uh, inside.

Thank you.

You've taken some risks.

So have you, my friend.

Oh, a drink?

Uh, how they say, uh,

one for the road?

No, thanks.

It's not that far, is it?

Hmm? No.

The border is only,
uh, 12 kilometers.

Halt!

No, herr MacGyver.

Do not move!

Drop the gun!

Esel! Ich bin en

Soviet officer.

Bitte?

Und wir muss gehen
zu dem hause, Bitte,

fur es gehe eine freunde sind

there in the appelsuss..

Or in der flugplatz.

Une sie is meinen frau.

Snell!

Ja wohl...

- Snell! Snell!

Waiting for a bus?

Bannister?

What the heck?

Where'd you come from?

New director of operations
sent me in. Backup.

New director?

Oh, you're gonna love him.

Can hardly wait.

Hey!

We're now 90% home!

just down this hill,

and a couple of
kilometers due west.

Brakes seem to be fading.

- Got a problem.
- Correction: Nonexistent!

Yeah, we're goin' to
the border, all right,

in pieces.

This is an emergency.

Nothin'!

I think we're out of fluid, Mac.

Sorry, pal.

Some backup, huh?

No, no, no, no,
there's got to be a way.

- What're you talkin' about?
- There's got to be a way

To stop this thing.

Without brakes? Oh, yeah.

With brakes!

Come again?

Pop the hood.

What?

Just pop it.

What the hell are you doin'?

Well, there's still
got to be some fluid

in the power steering, right?

Maybe I can pump it
into the brake cylinder.

Sure that'll work?

No.

How far are we from the border?

Bottom of the hill.

Three kilometers.

All right, pump the brake.

Pump the brakes!

Mac,

my boy,

I think you did it!

We got brakes!

Piece of cake!

Ah.

There you are.

Ever think about making a
living as a hood ornament?

So, how's the wife?

She's fine.

Just fine.

I'll see you later.

Fine.

Morning, Mr. MacGyver.

- Fritz.
- Good trip?

Yeah, it was
kind of a rest cure.

I brought you somethin',

special delivery.

Lieber gott!

There's a letter in
there, too, for you.

You-you saw my sister?

Yeah, she's fine, Fritz.

So are the kids.

You can tell by
the pictures there.

But... how?

Well, I was just passin'
through east Berlin, and...

Mr. MacGyver...

Thank you.

Oops!

Oh, hi, Mac.

Why don't I meet you
down the hall, huh?

Eh, no, no, you
don't understand.

This is Ingrid.

Well, I certainly hope so.

Ingrid, this is MacGyver,

The fellow I was
telling you about.

He, uh, fixes brakes.

How do you do, Mrs. Bannister?

Not well, if you intend to
take him away from me again.

I'm sorry about that, but,

well, he's under contract.

I'm only part-time here.

We were barely home
from our honeymoon,

and they took him
away for a whole month.

Yeah, I remember.

And now he's back.

I've hardly had
time to say hello,

and already your new
director's asking for him again.

Listen, why don't I see
if I can stall him a bit?

- What'd I tell you about MacGyver?

Why don't you two get
back to what you're doin'?

Send him in.

He's on his way, sir.

Well, I'll be dipped!

The new executive director!

Peter, congratulations!

They couldn't have
made a better decision.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

On the other hand,

maybe condolences
would be more appropriate.

I heard they were
waiting for you.

Oh, yeah, yeah.

Well, you know, I made it.

Thanks to Craig
bannister, actually.

I owe you for that.

Well, I sent him

because I was sweating for you.

Why?

Sit down.

I didn't know this

until they gave me this job,

but we have lost four top agents

in the past seven weeks.

Four.

Somebody out there knows exactly

what we're going to do

before we do it, so...

No!

What?

No.

Mac, you'll be
working with bannister.

I don't care.

The answer's still no.

I just found myself
a great new house

down on the beach,

and I'm in the
middle of movin' in.

Mac, nobody knows
better than I do

That you have really earned
some serious r and r, but...

Boy, am I glad you said that.

Pete, you're gonna be
the best darned director

this place ever had.

And as soon as I'm settled in,

I'm gonna have a
barbecue in your honor.

Mac, this is...

important.

Mac, you got to hear me out!

Will you just, for
one single second,

Stop and listen to
what I'm saying?

Pete, got any use
for an old truss?

Nice.

Listen, I thought we
could rely on each other.

I thought we were friends.

Are friends, Pete, were friends,

shall be evermore,
after my vacation.

Let me spell it out to you.

V-a-c-a-t-i-o-n.

Psss...

Yeah, but you're not

on vacation, are you?

You're working. Look at you.

You're working your tail off.

Getting ready to move to
some crummy seaside shack.

Shack?!

Pete, you have no taste.

None.

Mac, for the love of heaven,

give me a break, will you?

This is serious!

Look, I've come up with a plan.

It's a little risky, but...

I think that we can set a
trap and catch this mole.

Good traps have good bait.

Well, we've got good bait.

A Russian defector
who worked in the g.R.U.

And can I.D. Most of the
key Russian agents by sight.

Well, there you go, Pete.

You don't need me.

Yeah, well, a defector
is still a defector.

What if ours turns out to
be a double agent, a plant?

Mac, I need someone I
can trust to stay on top of it.

You have got a
whole file full of people

On salary who can do that.

Yes, and any one of them
could turn out to be the mole.

Mac, I need someone
that I know is clean.

Look, you're talking
to a brand new

And very nervous
director of operations.

We've lost four
very good agents.

And a key piece of
our national security

is starting to look like
Swiss-damn-cheese.

Now come on!

Mr. Thornton,

you're wasting
your time and mine,

and I have no interest

to work with someone
who has to be begged

to do his duty.

Viktoria, I told you to wait.

I know what you told me,

And I am tired of
waiting in the car.

This is your defector?

Right.

Viktoria tomanova,
meet MacGyver.

Mr. Thornton...

You absolutely cannot do this.

You're turning this
woman into a human target.

Mac, I don't have a choice.

I think that is my
choice, Mr. MacGyver,

and I have made it.

My mother still would
be in Soviet gulag

if it hadn't been for a
man like Mr. Thornton.

I owe a debt, Mr. MacGyver...

And I intend to pay.

Pete...

Excuse me, will you?

Now, I've done things for you,

and I'm more than
willing to do more,

But risking this woman's
life is not one of them.

This is useless to
talk to this bolvin.

Let us go.

Okay.

All right, but, uh, Mac,

Uh, could you do me
one small favor then?

- What?
- There's a, uh, reception tomorrow.

- Oh, Pete...
- I-I know you don't like parties,

But this one is, uh, major.

It's an international peace
through science symposium,

And, uh, there's going to be a
huge Soviet delegation there.

Now, headquarters wants everyone

From our side to be present.

Could you just do that for me?

It's important.

I'll give it some thought.

You will?

Okay.

Thanks.

John Wayne would
not have been afraid.

Bolvin?

Welcome to the peace
through science symposium.

I do hope you enjoy
yourself this evening.

May I offer you some champagne?

Thank you.

You're quite welcome, sir.

Good evening.

Good evening, Robert.

Be right with you.

Champagne, sir?

Don't mind if I do.

Good clarity.

Nice legs.

Good bouquet.

Go with a nice fish.

You're losing weight, Robert.

What is it?

Thanks.

Uh-uh. No, no, no, no...

Oh, stop it.

Don't say a word.

I don't believe it.

Will either of you please
tell me what is so amazing?

MacGyver.

I mean, this man's
idea of black tie

is a dirty shoelace.

Definitely not into formality.

Then the answer
is simple: A woman.

No, the answer is
Pete put the arm on me.

Ah, must've taken a whole
lot of drugs and torture.

Will you stop it?

Ignore him, MacGyver.
You're beautiful.

Thank you. I needed that.

So, where is the boy, anyway?

Well, he said he was
going to be a little late.

Yeah.

He may be late,
but he sure knows

how to make an entrance.

Well, well, well...

Why is everyone looking at me?

Well... maybe because
you're beautiful.

You're so gallant and nice.

Who is she?

Oh, society,

old money, that sort
of thing, you know.

I don't know how Pete finds 'em.

I'm ready.

Then let's circulate.

- Yeah.
- Mike, Barry, how you boys doing?

What's this?

Not word one.

It's rented.

You company guys are all alike.

Thanks for coming.

Oh, yes...

Ultra-high-pitched sound.

It's, uh, used

for cleaning jewels

And coins or the family silver.

Does everything in america
have to do with money?

Well, actually, it's, uh,
also being developed

for use in mining and excavation

Without pollution
or lung damage.

I'm sorry.

No, it's a fair question.

Did you finish
packing, Mr. MacGyver?

Actually, it defeated
me completely.

You must learn
not to be defeated

so easily, Mr. MacGyver.

And now, if you
will excuse us...

Who is it?

His name is Anton
vissarionovich Lem.

G.r.u., special operations.

Which means...?

He kills people.

Lem, huh?

Here as part of a delegation
to a peace symposium.

Wonderful. Wonderful.

Maybe we should
get you out of here.

What do you say, hmm?

Please, keep your hands from me.

Pete, you want
to help me on this?

Uh, I think he's right, if
you don't mind, viktoria.

I'm in no danger.
He doesn't know me.

I only know him from
his file. Iwas in records.

Uh, ladies and gentlemen,

may I have your
attention, please?

Thank you.

My dear friends, I
welcome you this evening,

And... may god bless you.

On behalf of the committee

For peace and progress
through technology...

Uh...

Progress, but not
perfection, huh?

- da.
- Okay, on a more, uh, serious note here,

In the hope...

that faith and science

can unite for peace,

Let us take a moment
to bless this dream...

This dream...

That...

must...

unite this divided planet

And re... Excuse me.

Remember we are the
animal that dreams...

A dream which we...

All share...

which we must protect

and defend.

Get her down!

- Let me get these.
- What are you doing?

The glasses...

Tony?

Okay. Jeff?

- What is it, drugs?
- Which must unite...

I don't know. Something
hit him. That's for sure.

- This divided...
- Reverend?

Just tell 'em to move aside.

Everyone listen, please.

We want you to clear the
room, but don't leave the building.

We may have some questions.

- Reverend?

You just tried to
kill someone. Why?

Animal that...

- Drinks...
- Re...?

That must defend...

And... protect...

That's it.

Someone told you
to use the gun. Who?

They-they... they told... me...

"They". Who's "they", reverend?

What is it?

There's got to be a
doctor here somewhere.

He's having a heart
attack. Let's go.

He's dead.

Hey, hey, hey!

Left inferior artery.

Righty-o.

Blockage of left
inferior artery, as well.

Arterial embolism
thereby indicated

as cause of cardiac arrest.

♪ And away he went. ♪

You have to make jokes?

What do you expect?

Tap dance?

Who's your sensitive flower?

Ed, you've been
down here too long.

Craig, there's no need for
you to watch this, you know.

No, Mac.

I can handle it.

Excuse me.

Egg roll.

Want some?

Excuse me.

Okay.

I'll be out in the hall.

Damn civilians!

Ed, you got any idea on
the nature of this thing?

Fatty tissue.

Nature of blockage unknown.

Complex mass of fibrous tissue.

Analysis to follow.

Can I get a sample?

Be my guest.

Why?

Well, it's not
cholesterol, it's fibrous.

So, what is it?

Oh, I'll probably be able
to tell you that tomorrow.

Unless you're in a rush.

I'm in a rush.

You're always in a rush.

You realize

That this is bending the
regulations just a little?

Ed, who rebuilt
your sound system?

Ah, you have a point.

You also have a sample.

Thank you.

Anytime, MacGyver.

Oh, there's some localized
sternal trauma, too.

So, what'd
you expect to find?

I don't know,
but I hate coincidences.

What coincidence?

The man had a seizure
and dropped dead.

The man was a
psychologically stable,

highly respected clergyman

who suddenly pulls
out a nine millimeter

and starts...

Blasts away.

Six shots

At someone whose
identity is top secret.

Our defector.

Well, was he political?

- Reverend mather?
- Yeah.

As far as we can tell,

the last political stand

he took was against
pontius pilate.

We checked back till
he was an altar boy,

and he was an altar boy.

The man was clean.

Until he started shooting,

and then had the world's

Most convenient heart attack.

Now, wait a minute.

How can you cause a
heart attack on demand?

Do you remember brudin?

Yeah. Out of Belgrade?

Yeah, that's the one.

Air bubbles injected
into the arteries.

Nobody injected
anything into reverend mather.

I mean, he was up there
with 100 people watching.

Yeah, well, that
makes it harder,

but six, two and even,
somebody killed him.

While he was
trying to kill our girl.

Which brings us right to it.

Somebody leaked.

Somebody set her up.

How is she now?

Angry. Scared.

I'm gonna put her
in a safe house

until we get some answers.

She did give us Anton Lem.

How was someone able
to use mather like that

and then kill him?

I'm workin' on that, guys.

It was so much fun.

May I come in?

Please.

Thank you.

You haven't
finished packing yet.

I thought Peter Thornton
was gonna tuck you away

in a safe house.

He did, but I told him

that I would not be able
to remember anything

unless he brought me here.

Remind me to thank him.

The last time I was
here, I was very rude.

I came to apologize.

No, no, no, that's
not necessary.

Oh, yes, it is necessary.

You saved my life.

The Chinese say if
someone saves your life,

you're in debt to them forever.

Strange folk, the Chinese.

They also call their
beautiful children ugly for fear

the gods will punish
them for the sin

of pride.

This is true?

If we were in China,
I'd be obligated

to call you the ugliest
woman in the world.

Are you a chemist?

Chemistry. I dabble.

What is "dabble"?

Well, in this case,
it might just prove

That reverend
mather was murdered.

Uh, I thought the heart.

Oh, I understand.

The heart didn't stop.

It was stopped.

But how?

I found adipic acid in
his blood and fatty tissue.

I don't understand.

Um, let me show you.

Adipic acid in a compound
including hexamethyline diamine.

Now, let's see.

Now, the solution also
contains a certain amount

of iron particles.

What I'm gonna do here is

activate a magnetic field,

and...

turn the chemicals into nylon.

Good for ladies' stockings and,

uh,

Clogging the arteries
of a kind old man.

Of course.

He was a weapon that failed.

And he was eliminated.

Viktoria, this guy Lem...

Of course.

That is what he does... kills.

MacGyver,

Lem we know,

but there may be others.

Any idea who?

No.

I just have a feeling.

I said before,

I'm not afraid.

I lied.

Was it that
terrible a day, dear?

I've had better.

Because of that crazy man?

Mather?

I don't have a lot of sympathy

for a man who
could have killed you.

Well, MacGyver thinks

he was used, set up.

And then killed.

He had a heart attack.

Well, Mac thinks it was induced.

No kidding? How?

I don't know.

He's workin' on it.

MacGyver is a remarkable guy.

You're lucky to
have him as a friend.

Hmm. Yeah.

I'm even luckier to
have you as a wife.

Are you changing the subject?

Mm-hmm.

I thought you had a hard day.

I did, so I need a lot of
comforting, loving care.

All right, turn over.

Ah! Ah.

Oh, you're the best thing
that ever happened to me.

You know that?

All that time I was in Europe,

I kept remembering
our honeymoon.

Mmm.

Like a dream.

You were all I
could think about.

It's not a dream, sweetheart.

Not a dream at all.

Not between us.

I love you, honey.

I know you do, Craig.

And it was such a
special honeymoon,

teaching you to
trust me, believe me,

in everything,

And you do.

That's why

I want you to tell me exactly

Who MacGyver suspects
of killing reverend mather.

And how.

You know Mac.

He can't let a puzzle alone.

He told me

the tomanova woman
spotted a g.R.U. Hit man

at the reception.

Who?

Name of Lem.

Anton Lem.

We have him in the files.

If we can figure out

how the reverend
was taken out...

Tie it to Lem...

We have... some key pieces.

But I can tell you
who's behind it all.

Who?

Two people.

Viktoria tomanova...

And MacGyver.

Mac?

Mm-hmm.

Behind... killing?

It's true.

And Craig?

Yes?

You have to kill them.

Yes.

Kill them both.

This is Lem.

When will you be ready?

Now.

Good. MacGyver just left.

When? Where is he?

He went to the science
fair reception hall.

Good.

And the tomanova woman?

She is there, too.

Excellent.

So, we move tomorrow?

No, tonight!

But what about bannister?

He's never been more ready.

Good.

I'll have him dressed

in 20 minutes, and I'll meet you

in front of the reception hall.

And Lem?

There must be no
mistakes this time.

I want them both!

It was very much
like a dream, MacGyver,

to think that only
the other night

I was here wearing
that beautiful dress,

feeling like a...

Queen.

Yes.

I know it sounds foolish,

But even loyal party
members have their fantasies.

I think you've earned yours.

You wish me to see that film.

It's a tape, actually,
of what happened here.

And hopefully, how it happened.

Ladies and gentlemen...

now, just take a look at this

and tell me if you
recognize anybody

besides Lem, all right?

All right.

I welcome you

This evening, and...

May god bless you.

On behalf of the committee

for peace and progress
through technology...

Uh... oh.

What is that?

Did you hear that sound?

Progress,

But not perfection.

I have heard it
somewhere before.

All right, listen to it
again, and concentrate.

Oh, it's very close.

On behalf of the committee

for peace and progress
through technology...

Uh... oh.

Uh...

I have a head like a rock!

All right, all right,

just stay cool and
calm about this.

You trust me?

Yes. To do what?

I got an idea.

I just need something
interesting for you to look at.

It's not bad if I can add to it.

Oh, yeah... perfect.

Now a little adjustment...

And we'll be in business.

Isn't this the
prettiest little thing?

Are you trying to hypnotize me?

No, I'm not trying
to hypnotize you.

I just want you
to relax your mind

so that half-a-memory

can come to the
surface, all right?

Okay. I trust you.

Good.

Almost.

Kiss me.

What?

Kiss me.

Okay.

No.

Kiss me!

Now I trust you.

Good.

Let's go.

Craig, you know

That four of your men
have been killed recently.

Damn right I know.

Now you're going to get

the two people
who killed them...

MacGyver and Victoria tomanov.

Are you ready, comrade?

Perfectly.

Craig, it's time now.

They're inside waiting for you.

This is a risk.

It is necessary.

The tomanova woman saw me.

She obviously did not remember,

but at any moment,
she could identify me.

All right, now, I
want you to relax.

I'm going to throw
some words out at you,

And I just want you to respond.

Don't even think, okay?

Okay.

Good.

Moscow.

Cold.

Thornton.

Escape.

America.

Freedom.

Noise.

Dizzy.

Mather.

Puzzle.

MacGyver?

Lem?

Killer. Death.

Bannister?

Worried.

Ingrid?

Wrong.

What?

Somehow... the name is wrong.

What, bannister?

No, what's maiden name?

Oh... I don't know.

There is something.

All right, wait a minute here.

Picture her face, her walk,

Her clothes, in a
totally different place.

- I remember the building.
- Where?

My office at g.R.U.
Headquarters.

I saw her in uniform.

What kind?

Red army.

It was years ago,
but... But it was her.

She still seems so young.

A girl...

But she's army intelligence.

Army
intelligence? Ingrid?

MacGyver, she was
chosen... Designed to seem

As a little, young
American girl, innocent.

But she's not innocent.

She's, uh... What
you say, lethal.

She's perhaps more
dangerous than Lem

Because she looks so fragile.

All right...

Then she's the mole.

Not exactly, MacGyver.

Craig?

You're the traitor, Mac.

You and that Soviet spy.

Between you, you
killed four good men.

He's the mole?

And doesn't know it, of course.

But actually, Mac,

you have just been
selected to be the mole,

and you will be executed.

Pete Thornton
will be heartbroken,

Shattered.

He might even resign,

making room for Craig.

All right, dear.

Now, Craig!

Hold it, Mac; Put the gun down.

Viki, no.

Craig?

You know it's not me.

You know it's her... Ingrid.

She ran you, man.

She used you.

You're the traitor.

You and that Soviet woman.

Craig, listen to me.

Look at me.

You pulled me out
of east Germany.

I covered you in Burma.

We ran the panjuk together,

and we got out...

Together.

It's useless, MacGyver.

For four weeks on our honeymoon,

he was programmed every day.

He's ours... for good.

You want to bet?

Take a look at what's
going on here, lady.

No...

Oh, yeah.

He's still mine, MacGyver.

Oh, Mac!

Oh, my god!

Viki, get his shirt open.

His heart isn't damaged yet.

If I can get electric
current through his system,

it'll break the magnetic field

and counteract the clotting.

All right, viki, move away.

Craig!

Craig!

Fight it! Fight!

Come on.

He's breathing.

Come on, Craig.

Mac... what're you doing?

John Wayne could
not have done it better.
