On tonight's semifinal,

it's a Star Wars themed episode.

They seem very excited.

I love Star Wars.

I remember buying the very first

Lego Star Wars set

when it came out in 1999.

I still have it
in my build room today.

- When I was younger,

I was so obsessed
with Star Wars.

I've even named
my vehicle the Falcon.

I'm Han Solo.
Amy is my co-pilot Chewie.

- Hello, builders!

Not so long ago, in a galaxy
we're all familiar with,

ten teams were vying
for a $100,000 grand prize

and the title Lego Masters.

We're coming
into the ninth challenge

feeling so excited
just to still be here.

We are not just artists,
we're escape artists.

We have escaped
the bottom two, like,

I can't even count
how many times now.

This is "Lego Masters:
A New Build."

Imagine how great life would be

if we had another droid

I love droids.

In fact, we could use

This week,
you're building droids.

you could probably use the help

of the greatest brickmasters
in the galaxy--

All right, so, brickmasters,

Droids are some of the most
loved characters

in the Star Wars universe,
so we really want to see

how you bring personality
to your builds.

So it's the movement
and the details

that will bring out
those emotions.

Yeah, exactly, BB-8.

We're confident
that we can create a droid

that fits within this universe

and has all the personality
and the right look.

But the mechanical functions?
It's really daunting.

We don't know
if we can really nail that.

Make sure
your droids come to life

and have some sort of
a function that gives meaning.

All right, teams,
where you finish in this challenge

will determine your advantage
in your next build,

so make sure
to bring your A-game.

We are in the semifinals.

We don't know what the advantage
is, but we need this.

You have nine hours
to build your droid,

and those nine hours start now.

Let's think of something silly.

Okay, so, brickmasters,
the challenge is the teams

- have to build their own droid.
- Yes.

It's an Imperial welder droid.

- Construction. I like that.
- Like a construction droid.

We're asking them
to give it movement,

that is has to go from A to B.

It should be on tracks.

I think tracks
might be easier, too,

because you can make it,
like, zoom around.

Yeah.

But there's also
one additional layer.

It's making sure it belongs
in the Star Wars universe.

- Right.
- He can be, like, a blue milk server.

Yeah. Very Star Wars-y.

You can make a robot.

But can you make
a Star Wars droid?

Well, no, we don't always talk
about people right in front of them.

We happen to be talking
about you in front of you

because the build
is about droids.

And the builders are kind of
making new friends for you.

- Okay, so, arm up and down.
- Yeah.

This is the Star Wars challenge.

We have to build a droid.

- Head spins.
- Yep.

This is going to play
to our strengths.

We love motors,
we love machinery.

We love making
those things come to life.

We feel like that's
going to set us apart

from these other teams.

They're doing a musician droid.

- Musician?
- That's cute.

So it's going to be treads,
and this will be the drums?

- Watch.
- I love how that moves.

- It's cool, right?

I brought my buddies with me.

Yeah, the want to know
about your droid.

Our idea is a repair
droid for the Empire.

He's going to be a welder.

He's going to have an arm
with a welding tip on it.

Do you have a droid song
in you maybe?

- Um...

about a droid, how would it go?

How do you guys feel
about this challenge?

We're going to do our best
to make a really fun droid.

Sam and I have decided to make

a one man band musician droid.

It's going to be banging
a drum on its head

and he's going to have
a little tip cup on the back.

The first time you guys
ever did a moving build was...

- The first challenge.
- ...was the first one.

The theme park
challenge, it was a disaster.

No! Look!

But I look back
on our journey as a team

through these challenges

and we've learned so much.

I really believe we have
what it takes to win.

I know we do.

I'm rolling two droids deep.

- Sweet!
- Hey, y'all.

You've won the last
two challenges.

Yep, we have.

You could pull off
a three-peat with this.

We've got some good ideas,
I think.

We're building a droid
that is going to serve

the classic Star Wars blue milk.

On top of his head,
he's going to have this tray

that's going to look like

it's going to teeter off
at any moment.

How many motors do you think
that this is going to have?

- Three motors.
- Okay.

- How many do Mark and Boone have?
- Hey, Mark and Boone,

how many motors
does your build have?

Six.

Do you believe him?

You believe everybody.
Well, that's nice.

- I feel like this is too heavy.

Look at those wheels.
They're mushing in.

This is one
of the hardest challenges

that we have ever
given our builders.

We're asking them to make
a very technical build

with multiple movements,

but we also want creativity
and storytelling from them.

- Four hours remaining!
- What?

- Four hours?

Yeah!

You're my only hope!

I knew you'd like that one.

We're encountering
a lot of weight problems.

Mark and Boone,
this is their wheelhouse.

They're going to pull out
something awesome.

I don't know all that stuff
as well as they do.

- So check that out.

I don't like the mechanics.
I like the aesthetics.

We want to test out
our wobble system,

so we put the tray
on top of our model

without anything else.

That's just a lot of weight
to just move back and forth.

Our entire droid
hinges on that fact

that it's going to be
wobbling around.

It's just so heavy,
and we don't even have the head on it.

If that tray falls off every time
this thing wobbles just a little bit,

we're finished.

Hey, that's awesome.

It's just so heavy,

This is just
not going how I want.

This is the Star Wars challenge.

We're building a droid.

He's going to have a tray
on top of the head.

But the mechanical functions
are kind of chaotic,

and somebody's going home,

so we've got to find a solution.

Maybe it's not going
to be able to go

back and forth to the side.

There's too much
wobble going on,

so we're going to try and limit
the amount of movement

and hope that that is enough
to save our build.

It's going to be moving
forward and back,

just not side to side, right?

Yeah, I hope.

I love movement,
which is why I'm sitting.

So I guess I mean I love
movement in other things.

But how do our builders make
their Lego creations move?

Well, Lego has a series
of motorized parts

that allows builds to light up,
turn, and twist.

Using one type of motor,
you can make your creation roll

or swing back and forth.

Hey-o!

And when you use
multiple motors together,

you can make
something like this.

Scary, right?
BB-8. No, no, no.

It's okay.
BB-8, it's just a--

Aww. Droids.

If this is put on cleats,
it would go--

I can't see. I can't see.

I think we underestimated
how difficult

building a droid is going to be.

See, this'll keep--
these keep popping off.

We want to have a drum,
but this is a very

complicated movement for us,

as we've never done
hardly any movement.

This is definitely
not our challenge.

No, no, it is not.

- All his brains in here.
- His brains?

- His brains.
- His brains.

- Hello.
- Boone and Mark, how's it going?

- Doing well. How are you?
- This is looking dense.

Yeah, there's a lot in there.
We've got six motors.

Two bottom motors here
run the treads.

Third motor in the base
rotates its torso.

He's got a motor
that adjusts the arm

for the welding function
and rotates the head.

You've got some super strong
technical things.

Now it's really about the creativity
on your character development

and just sharpening the story.

We know that droids
have a lot of personality,

and I'm not seeing a lot
of personality in the build.

- Okay.

like, drop the front

so that it falls
completely off, like--

That's a really neat trick.

I don't know about co-host,

Our droid looks great, but we can't go
into judging with a head falling off.

Why is that so loose?

It seems that the neck, it's just not
strong enough to hold up all that weight.

- Sheesh.

but for us in this
challenge right now,

it could be good--

I think the head

of their droid just fell off.

This droid
is an Imperial repair droid

designed to look for problems

and repair them
with his welding arm.

- What's happening?

The welding arm
is raising up into the air.

- I think he's receiving a transmission.

He's been reprogrammed...

I can see it's a very
accomplished and polished build,

but I was struggling a little bit to
feel the emotion in the beginning.

how are you actually going to
give personality to this character

and convey this story of
transformation that was so key.

And I think you have actually
done a great job of it.

- Thank you. - I think you're
totally on cue for the dark side.

And just functional-wise,
having that pop at the end,

that was a very dramatic moment
having it come out.

Sam, Jessica,
tell us about your droid.

Meet out droid MP3.

He doesn't have an owner,

so he's turned to panhandling
for credits

as a street musician so that
he doesn't go into disrepair.

He plays the drum on his head
a little horn out the front,

a flute on top, and he has a cup in
the back to collect credits for tips.

Does it take requests?

What the--
one of the motors is dead.

- It's not running anymore.
- No, it is.

No, the second one's not going.

It was working a minute ago
but now it's not.

I set the droid down,
I start moving it,

and one of the gears falls off and
one wheel stops working completely.

It has character,
so you've definitely accomplished that.

and it has a fun story, but it is
struggling to support its own weight.

Those tank treads
were under way too much stress.

You had a great concept.
You've definitely achieved

some success there in going
outside of your comfort zone.

but it's clear to see
that there are definitely flaws.

Tyler and Amy,
tell us about your droid.

This is EZ-PZ.

It is EZ-PZ's first day
at his new job

at the local cantina.

He serves blue milk
and Wookie cookies,

but as we all know, first days at
a new job are pretty nerve-racking.

We think we have the neck fixed,
but we didn't have time to test it.

We just have to hope
that it works.

For this "Star Wars" challenge,
we built a droid

that has a lot of fun,
wobbly movement.

But every time we tested our droid,
the head and the tray came toppling off.

We're just hoping that it works.

you were able to control it

and try to get some of that wobble
without it actually collapsing.

the eyes are moving,

that they're far apart.
It really brings emotion.

That's like our fastest planning
time yet.

What do you think
about their choices?

Tyler and Amy,
famous for their color,

picked the least colorful scene.

- So, trench, how does that look?

There's a risk that it's not gonna stand
out compared to some of the other builds.

Is there someone big and red
in Sam and Jessica's scene?

It's like a salt flat.

Now Tyler and Amy, they have
one of the strongest icons

of the whole "Star Wars"
universe, the AT-AT.

- Yeah.
- The risk is that AT-AT

is so dominating, is there gonna
be enough room for a battle scene?

- This is gonna be great.
- What about Mark and Boone?

They got a great universe
to work in.

I mean, you've got Ewoks,
stormtroopers, speeder bikes,

AT-STs,
it's a really dynamic scene.

We just need to make sure that there's
enough room in front of the bunker

and then build up
kind of around it.

Look, he's already got
his whole backdrop done.

Yeah, but we got something.

Sam and Jessica,
they are real artists in this competition,

and they've obviously seen
these big red mounds of sand.

It could be very eye-catching
if they pull it off right,

but they've always had issues
with time.

I think we're building
a 20 hour build.

- I know, I know.
- And trying to do it in eight hours.

It's gonna be tough.

You got six hours left.

- Is this looking too big?
- Well, it's minifig scale.

I've never built an AT-ST
before.

I think it's one of the most challenging
technical pieces of the build.

And it has to be epic to compete against
Amy and Tyler's Imperial Walkers.

- And then how tall?
- I think just tall enough

to be the tallest thing
in the room.

That or that?

- I mean, this is the biggest part
of our scene, so.. - Yeah, exactly.

- Greetings.

- Yes.

- There's a very tiny me.

We are excited about the Ewoks
'cause Ewoks are cute.

interesting ways to show them

being ready to attack
the Imperial troops.

I've pretty much got the shape

- This is one of my favorite scenes,

so I'm feeling really confident.

Our AT-AT is going to be
our main focus.

What about the colors in this scene because
obviously it's quite white and gray.

How are you going to bring it
to life?

One of the things we want to do
is to have that explosion,

you know?
A giant orange and yellow fireball.

R2 might get lost in that snow.

He excels at that, sir.

We only have five hours left.

This is a very daunting task.

We have giant ships
that we've never built before.

This is taking forever.

Eight hours is not a lot of time,
so it's easy to get discouraged.

The saddest thing for me is that I'll
go home on a "Star Wars" challenge.

I know how these other two build
with this kind of stuff

and they both are really good
at this.

If fear takes over Sam,
there's only so much I can really do.

- I have faith in us.
- This is totally out of our wheelhouse.

So we're doing
the Battle of Crait.

And I think it'll work for us
because it has the red dust

coming out of the white.
We feel like we can make it really cool.

How do you think you're going
to tackle this red dust?

'Cause right now C3P0 really stands out
with his brilliant gold in the room.

- He is brilliant.
- Why, thank you, sir.

- You're welcome. - I just had an
oil bath. It was quite refreshing.

we're thinking of doing something jagged

with all different types of red so that you get
the illusion that it is some sort of dust.

To really nail this,
I think we want two AT-ATs.

- This foot is a masterpiece.

So you're gonna do something
beautiful, organic.

It's the "Star Wars" challenge
and Boone and I are recreating

the scene on Endor right when
the Ewoks start attacking.

We're trying to look
exactly like the movie does,

so if you look at the AT-ST,
there are connections in here

that they're not 100% rigid.

When you build something that's not
as quite stable as you want it to be,

you run the risk of something
falling apart

in the last moments
of the challenge,

and that can be catastrophic.

What will happen
when the time is up?

No one will be sent to the spice
mines of Kessel, will they?

No, no, no, no.

Normally we judge their builds
and then the Brickmasters

choose who gets to stay
and sadly, who doesn't.

My. We should leave.

a judgmental droid.

- We're coming for you, Amy and Tyler.

They're actually turning up
something good-looking over there.

Looking around the room, we're inspired
by Sam and Jessica's dynamic explosions.

We can do like little snow,
like...

Yeah.

You know, kinda like little
fire explosions.

So we're gonna be adding our
own dynamic landscape.

- It's the
29 minute 45 second warning.

This is for the finale.

- Let's do the minifigures
and then let's do the bushes.

I kinda want another knee
to be bent.

- You gotta do these on both sides.

- Because they're gonna be

are actually a little scared of us.

I wouldn't know why.
'Cause that AT-AT looks smaller.

I'm totally impressed with ours. I think
we both exceeded our own expectations.

It would be so awful
to go home at this point.

That would be so amazing,
though, if we could, like,

for the baby.

the beginning of the challenge.

This is the second part
of the "Star Wars" challenge.

We have to build an epic scene
from one of the films.

Easy, easy, easy.
No!

There's 17 minutes left. I just tried
to move the AT-ST and it fell apart.

- Back hatch.
- You got it, dude.

Mark's encouraging me.
He's saying, "Boone, you got this."

- We're a team, buddy.
- But all I'm thinking of

is what are the things
that aren't getting done

while I'm trying to fix this machine?
Come on, come on. Come on.

- Ten minutes.
- Boone had a last minute collapse.

- Yeah, I saw that.
- You got this.

Now get it back up
and get it done, all right?

- Yeah, for real. - Hopefully he got
it back to where he wanted it to be.

Don't overthink it.
Don't get too carried away.

- Do you like it?
- I like it.

I don't think you need any more
people down there. That's plenty.

- Okay, perfect, perfect. Don't touch it.
- Okay.

One minute left.
One measly minute.

Let's put this on there
before the time runs out.

See what I was doing with those branches?
Just not breaking them.

- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- It's looking good.

Three, two, one, time's up.
Bricks down.

- Wow. - I wish I had put
more detailing right there.

Right now, I'm still shaken up
about that AT-ST.

But I am relieved
that our build is done.

I just hope that it will
get us to the finale.

- Mark and Boone.
- Hello.

- Hey.
- So talk to us about your build.

This is the Imperial bunker on
Endor from "Return of the Jedi."

This is just moments
after the Ewoks

have stormed in on the bunker.

We see them coming over
the log there

to attack the stormtroopers

where C3P0 and R2D2
caused the distraction.

We see Han and Leia
have picked up blasters

and are starting
to take out troopers.

But we really wanted to focus
on this contrast between

the cold bunker and this warmth
of the Ewoks' world,

as well as some of the primitive
tools they were using

in this battle to try
to defeat these troops.

All right, so, Brickmasters,
what do you think?

First of all,
you've built a really nice AT-ST,

and I can see the attention
to detail.

I love that you have
this little tree house

and rope bridge across as well.

It really feels like it frames
the whole scene.

And I especially love your Ewoks with
the transparent bricks underneath

that look like they're just
jumping out.

You've totally captured all of those
moments that made the scene magical.

Like these little wooden weapons
just banging on the feet,

the speeder bike with the Ewok
getting thrown off the side.

It's just so fun.
And I like the organic nature

that you brought into
the whole model.

You're using the studs out on
the tree feels very tree-like.

Your landscaping is gorgeous.

I think you guys should be
really proud of this model.

is going to get us
to the finale.

As I look around the room, I see things
that the other teams did better than us.

I'm hopeful that it will
get us there.

- Sam and Jessica. - In this
challenge, I really gave it all I got.

Jessica pushed us to create
something amazing.

I'm very lucky to have her
as a teammate.

Walk us through your build.

So we had the Battle of Crait
from "The Last Jedi."

This is where the First Order
is finding the Resistance base.

We really wanted to captured
the key elements of this scene.

The white salt and the red
dust coming out from under it.

There were explosions of dust,
so we've captured those.

We also have some of the key
vehicles that are in the scene,

including the TIE Fighter
that's shooting down.

Yeah, you guys picked a scene
that was full of action.

And you've definitely captured
it here in your build.

And I think it's definitely
the most polished build

that you guys have given us.

Love the dust coming up here
because it really feels like

that ship is flying
right in the action.

We've really seen you
late in this competition

totally up your game.
This is a dynamic scene.

I mean, we have two very similar
scenes in the room

where we have a white surface,
but you've really maximized that red.

And it just makes the whole
scene really come alive.

If I had to nitpick a bit, I would say
the fact that you've made this one go up

with studs out with the
transparents,

but then you have the same
material coming up

in a very polished smooth way
behind the vehicle here.

If feels like two different ways
of showing the same thing.

But you're really taking
advantage of the vehicles you have

and you've chosen the two iconic
ones, the TIE Fighter

and then you got
the Ski Speeder.

Having that at an angle
just sliding across the surface.

It has energy and it has life, and I'm
really proud of you guys this time.

I thought we are definitely
going home.

That was our best review ever.

It felt really nice
to hear that stuff.

Sam and Jessica delivered a
droid in the previous challenge

that was,
a little worse for wear.

But in this challenge,
they nailed it.

Tell us about your amazing
"Star Wars" build.

So we chose the AT-AT Assault
on Hoth

from "The Empire Strikes Back."

This is the moment
when the Empire has discovered

the hidden Rebel base on Hoth.

And they have sent in these
monstrous AT-ATs

targeting the Rebel shield
generator

and the Rebels are fighting back

with their meager Snow Speeders.

Their blasters can't penetrate
the armor,

but they have figured out that they
can use their harpoons and tow cables

to trip the AT-AT walkers.

What was it about this scene that made
you want to pick it right out of the gate?

I mean, there's a technical challenge
of creating these behemoths.

And we wanted to do something
a little different.

Well, great job, you guys.
Brickmasters?

Congratulations on making
the most epic AT-AT.

This is, for me,
the strongest vehicle in the room.

Thank you. And
the fact that you have done two

and put that one
in a very different position

showing the vulnerability
of this monster,

it really creates a dynamic
moment to this whole scene.

And I do notice the snow that you
added right at the last minute.

- Yes! - It really makes the
vehicle feel like it's moving.

And you've even given us
a little bit of color

with an explosion happening
over here.

So, you know we're nitpicking at
this point in the competition,

but you could have given us
an explosion

on that vehicle as well.

You know, draw a little bit
more attention

and bring a little bit more of
that color that you're famous for.

- Congratulations, guys. Great job.

Yeah, our explosion definitely
could have been a little more.

Having put so much work into
our build up until this point

it would be really,
really disheartening

to be sent home
right before the finale.

Brickmasters,
each one of these teams

brought their creativity
and imagination

to the "Star Wars" galaxy
recreating scenes,

but now it's up to you
to decide a winner.

This could be anybody's game
at this point.

Mark and Boone really picked a
scene that played to their strengths

and they have so many fun little
details with all those Ewoks.

Theirs is a really strong
contender.

Sam and Jessica,
they presented an awesome scene

and it's gonna be hard to beat.

Breathe.
