Iron Sharpens Iron (2020–…): Season 1, Episode 4 - Nyjah Huston & Simon Pagenaud - full transcript

Nyjah Huston and Simon Pagenaud discover the secret similarity between skateboarding and Indycar driving: balance.

- You got it.

It's funny how this can cause more fear
than a 1,000-horsepower car.

[screams]

- MAN: Damn! That was crazy.

[screams]

- COMMENTATOR: Are you kidding me?

- I'm Nyjah Huston,
and I'm a professional skateboarder.

- COMMENTATOR: Pagenaud's got the lead!

- I'm Simon Pagenaud, and
I'm the 2019 Indianapolis 500 champion.

- COMMENTATOR: Simon Pagenaud wins!
He's the made the Indy 500!

[skateboard wheels rattling]

- What's good, bro?
- What's up, man?

- How's it going?
- Good, good.

- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you too.

- NYJAH: I went into this really excited.

You know, I've always been a big car fan.

I heard you were doing it
and I knew it was going to be a good day.

I got you--
- You brought me one?

- Yeah. Get you into my setup right there.

- This is your setup.
It might be a little too quick for me.

- All right. Let's see what you got.

Let's see you cruise.

Oh, you got it.

A lot of skating, man, it's just balance.

Just, like, using your body
to, like, cruise around on the board.

- So I don't know how to turn like you do.
Like, when you lift the front.

- NYJAH: You want the heel off the board
instead of your toes of the board.

Yeah. Like that.

And then you just kind of go up a little,
and you do, like, two turns like that.

It makes it easier.

Oh.

Skateboarding is, like, all balance.

- It's balance, yeah.
- Yeah, so much balance.

- Just like race car.

Biggest thing in racing, people don't
realize is, like, we work on balance.

'Cause when we drive the race car,

it's just you with the machine,
but you got to balance it.

To use the tires 100%.
- Yeah.

Have you ever done the ollie before?

- The what?
- Ollie.

It's the most basic skate check.
It's just...

It's like a quick strong motion.

- I don't feel it, man.

- It's funny how this can cause more fear
than a 1,000-horsepower car.

Overcoming fear is a huge part
of, I feel, like of both the things we do.

Oh, my God! Ah!

When I'm skating and hitting big rails,
I mean anything can go wrong.

A smallest little foot placement,

you're breaking wrist, ankles,
messing up your knees.

Sometimes even risking up your life,
you know.

- Definitely.

But how do you know
you're gonna land that first trick

you've never done before?
- Yeah, you don't.

But I mean, that's the fun of it.

People always ask,
"Do you still get scared and stuff?

I'm, like, hell, yeah, obviously.

That fear is never gonna go away.

You got to be willing
to get past those moments...

- SIMON: Yeah.

- ...and still want to go out there
and do it, instead of being scared.

- I want to see you ride, man.
- All right, let's do it.

- Damn! Man, look at him flying.

Easy. Just like a walk in the park.

What surprised me is how you can
move that plank using your bodyweight

which is very much what I do
with the race car.

It's you and the machine
trying to go around the corner,

balancing it the best you can.

See that?

But you do that even in the air,
which I found fascinating.

- NYJAH: Easy.
- Whoa! Did you guys get that?

I learnt from you today.
I learnt a lot on the balance.

And I think, like,
when I'm gonna get back in the race car,

if I'm been working on my balance
a little better,

- Yeah.
- I think it would help me.

- SIMON: All right, Nyjah, here we are.
- Here we are.

- Looking good. You got your race suit on.
- This is my first time in a fire suit.

- SIMON: We're gonna have
this beast with us in there.

- NYJAH: Yep.
- 755-horsepower.

- Good.

- Tons of downforce on that thing
so we can brake late,

go through the corners hard.
- Let's do it, man. I'm ready.

- SIMON: In Indy, you know it's gonna be
above 230 miles an hour average,

if there's a gust of wind,
you're so much on the edge,

you're gonna hit the wall really hard,
up to 100 Gs sometimes.

[engine revving]

Anything could happen.

There's been so many bad crashes,
you could get paralyzed.

You know, I've lost some friends.

I mean, it's part of it, unfortunately.
It's the risk that you have to deal with.

But there is absolutely nothing else
that I would want to do.

So, I accept those risks.

- SIMON: Ready to have some fun?
- NYJAH: Let's go.

- I'll drive you then you drive me.
- Yep, let's do it.

- Good.

[screams]

Hell, yeah.

- SIMON: It's just like what you do
on your skateboard. It's coordination.

I think the misconception is
people think we're not athletes.

People think we just sit there
and turn left and right.

I have to train five days a week,
three hours a day,

on the bicycle, at the gym.

My heart rate is
between 165 and 180 for two hours.

That's crazy.

[screams]

- NYJAH: I've never been with
someone who's driven like that.

- SIMON: You go quiet.
- Yeah.

- SIMON: You have to admit you got quiet.
- Yeah. [laughs]

[engine revving]

- Man, that was crazy.
- I got it.

- I cannot imagine doing 200 laps of that.
Holy shit.

- SIMON: You've driven a car
on a track before?

- NYJAH: I've never driven one this fast

and this track-ready.

You got to imagine the car is a weight.
Right? It's a moving weight.

- Yeah.
- It's just like a motorcycle.

If you brake hard, the rear gets light.

The weight transfer to the front,
so now you can turn really well.

- Yeah.
- And as you enter the corner,

keep the brakes on,
keep that weight on the nose,

It was impressive to see that you could
respond well to driving the race car.

Listen to what I was saying,
like giving you tips and applying it.

- Yeah, I know what you mean.
Yeah, you braking while turning, yeah.

That was crazy.
My brain is just, like, overload.

- Right. Yeah.
- Concentration level is just overload.

- Nice! Man, you're really good.

Now you make me look terrible now.

[laughing]

Like, you're a natural. Honestly.

- NYJAH: Thank you. I appreciate it.
- I'm not being nice. You're a natural.

There's something to be said
for that moment,

when you're kind of scared
you're gonna hurt yourself,

but you're gonna try anyways.

And it's like jumping off a cliff.

- Yeah, driving that car,
I was scared as shit.

But just like skateboarding,
a lot of it just comes down to confidence

and telling yourself that, uh,
you got this, and not being scared.

I wanted this life so bad,
I want to be the best at what I do.

- Yeah. I feel you. Yeah.
- Right.

And there's nothing that will stop me
to get there.

Competition is, you know,
it's almost like water to me.

I just want to be better.
- Yeah.

Hell yeah, bro. Good times. Thank you.
- Awesome.

- Let's do it again.
- Hell, yeah. Let's do it.
