Iron Sharpens Iron (2020–…): Season 1, Episode 7 - Amanda Nunes & Carli Lloyd - full transcript

UFC champion Amanda Nunes and World Cup winner Carli Lloyd find common ground in perfecting timing, rhythm, and technique to stay on top.

- You're crazy.
- I just want you to squeeze, squeeze,
squeeze.
- [grunts]
- NINA: That's it. There you go.
- Now, pull.
This is...
- Annoying.
- [crowd cheering]
- ANNOUNCER: Amanda "The Lioness"
Nunes!
- I'm Amanda Nunes.
I'm a professional MMA fighter.
- MAN: Carli Lloyd for the first time.
How about that?
- MAN 2: It's Lloyd again!
- MAN 3: Carli Lloyd's
putting on a show here.
- I'm Carli Lloyd
and I'm a professional soccer player.
Hey! How are you?
Yeah, same. How are you? Good?
- Good. Good.
- I've honestly been a huge fan.
What you've done for the sport for women
getting to the top based off
of your ability, I really respect that
'cause I feel that I've mirrored that
in my career.
Well, I'm excited. Hopefully I don't look
too ridiculous today.
- AMANDA: I'm gonna show you a
little jujitsu, a little Judo takedown...
- I'm a little nervous.
- I have to know
the right time to get in.
One, two. This is my time to get in.
Soccer helped me a lot,
building my, my base,
my kicks, and my movement.
- One, two.
- AMANDA: See?
If you come from soccer
you're gonna do very well in MMA for sure.
Every time that I show up in a cage,
I show technique.
- Now, this is here?
For me it' just fascinating
to be this uncomfortable at something
just because it's so new
and it's something that I'm not good at.
- Turn this way now.
- This way?
- Come up on this one. This one's
going over, get to that left knee.
- In this, I'm, like,
highly, highly uncomfortable.
- Yeah.
- You pull this arm over...
Yup, yup, take that other side.
And then choke.
[Amanda grunts]
- You're crazy.
- That's it. There you go.
- Like, there's so many little details
of like, what to do.
- It's, like, we have to keep it doing
over and over, over and over.
- Yeah.
- AMANDA: It's the muscle memory.
Keep putting yourself
in the baddest situation, bad position.
- Drive, drive, drive.
- Go, go, go!
- Try to survive
because anything can happen in a fight.
- NINA: Yup and go.
- Don't forget to...
- So many moves.
- AMANDA: So we're gonna do like a...
kinda combo.
Jab, cross, hook, cross.
And the kick follow,
they cross, the legs cross.
Boom, boom.
You see, it's a music.
Pop, pop, pop, pop, boom.
Let's try? Awesome.
- Sure.
So am I going here first?
- NINA: One, two, up, straight.
Close.
- I'm not used to kicking like that.
- Yeah.
- One, two, three, four. That's right.
- I'm like, off balance.
- Because your foot.
Look, you have to do this.
- CARLI: Pivot.
- AMANDA: Yeah, pivot.
- Like... See?
- All right.
- AMANDA: Unos, dos, tres. Rotate.
- NINA: There you go.
Yeah.
- This, this side is actually better
than the other side.
- I think I gotta do this a little bit
more often, like, get some steam out.
Thanks for all the tips. It was awesome.
I'm gonna be watching now intently
to see if you do things right
when you're out there.
- Right.
- Welcome to my world now.
- I know.
I look at you, like, oh, she's calm.
I'm always very nervous.
I play soccer,
but I never have opportunity
to be able to do anything
with a professional.
It was a good experience to be with you,
like, do all those techniques.
- CARLI: I spend a lot of time breaking
down every single technique that I do.
It's all about pushing the ball
instead of... like, I don't do this.
I don't tap it. Your foot is steering
the ball where you wanna go.
It's like what you do, not wasting energy,
not wasting punches, you know.
Same thing with me.
I wanna be so efficient...
It's not about trying to perfect
every single shot
or everything that you do.
But it's about the repetition,
every single day.
Till eventually, it becomes instinctual.
You know, steering it.
Right foot, left foot,
inside of the foot, outside of the foot,
the soles.
That's good.
And just do it rep after rep after rep.
- The control of the ball
is like really important.
- Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- Right?
- But like, it looks easy, it's like,
she's just dribbling through the cone,
but there's a certain technique.
- It's not.
- It's not really about
sitting here and just doing
all these stagnant moves, you know.
You wanna get your moves done.
So you can explode past the
defender and then-- hook a shot.
- That was easy.
- For me, for defending, it's same thing,
you know, footwork.
It's like, it's your dribbling, you know.
I'm kind of moving in lower.
Nice. Look at that.
Olé.
You got good footwork though.
Since you're good at kicking,
I figured doing a side volley.
Some of the keys are pretty similar
to some of the stuff that you do is...
you know, you wanna be able to,
to get our hips into it
and swivel, and, and basically,
like, put all your momentum.
And so, when the ball comes down
to its lowest point,
you want your leg to come up
and swing down through at it.
- All right.
- Here.
Here, and then it's...
- All right.
- Again you're like,
pivoting off that foot.
- Uh-huh.
- And the toss has to be kinda good too.
That's it?
You want your left side to be kinda lower,
so you're coming into...
- I get it. The technique wrong.
- You hit it when it was higher,
so wait till it comes down
a little bit more, hit at its lowest point
and then you'll make better connection.
- Deal.
- Nice! That was good.
- AMANDA: Better.
- CARLI: We're different.
We-- we're different sports,
but we're, we're cut from the same cloth.
- Yeah. You're a champion. I'm a champion.
We're in the same page
and that making me happy.
- We're trying to be the best.
- The best.
- The greatest.
That was fun.
- Awesome.
- Appreciate it.
And awesome to...
- It was awesome.
- Let's play more in the future.
- Yeah, yeah.
Come to Brazil.
- All right, for sure.
Let's do this.
- Sounds good.
I think in your next life you can
come be a soccer player.
- Si.
- Yeah...
- Awesome.
