Heartland (2007–…): Season 13, Episode 5 - Fairytale - full transcript

Amy and Ty worry about the impact a surprise visitor will have on Luke.

Previously on "Heartland"

- Luke, where is your mom?
- She's in the car.

Is this where you've been staying?

- Mhmm.
- Hang on a sec.

I just told my girls
that you're my boyfriend

because you said you were all in.

What exactly are you saying?

I'm saying that I think
that we should get our...

our own place together.

Come on, Kirk!

You saved them all. Including me.

You were the hero today. I know that.

I'm gonna make sure
everyone else does too.

It's Andrea, right?
I'm Ty, this is my wife, Amy.

We're the couple that's been
spending some time with Luke.

You can buy Luke all of
the horses in the world,

but that doesn't change the
fact that I am his mother.

We already looked here.

Yeah, horses move around, you know,

doesn't hurt to look again.

Well, it's been a week since that storm.

We should have found Champ by now.

We gotta widen the search.

No. We covered a lot of ground today.

I'm beat. It's best if we
start fresh in the morning.

There is still one place I wanna check.

Well, the good news is,

Ophelia wasn't traumatized by the storm.

Oh, she wasn't?

No. She was just
experiencing some discomfort

from an infection on her legs.

Infection? How did I miss that?

Well,
it's hard to see with her feathering,

but good news is,
it's all cleared up now.

Oh. That's wonderful.

I really can't thank you guys enough.

It's our pleasure.
Ophelia can go home today.

Well, here's the thing, uh,

my barn was badly damaged in the storm.

And the repairs won't be finished

until after the weekend.

So if you can keep her with
you for a few more days,

I'd be so grateful.

Yeah, I don't see that being a problem.

If you want I could exercise her.

I've never ridden a Gypsy Vanner before.

Sure.

That'd be a real treat for Ophelia.

- She doesn't get ridden much.
- Really?

Well, I'm not much of a rider.

I'm more a collector
of beautiful things:

art work, jewelry...

of course my prize possession, Ophelia.

Well, if you're,
if you're happy with our services,

we'd really appreciate if you
could leave us a review online.

Oh, of course. It'd be my pleasure.

Thank you.

I wasn't too pushy with that review,
was I?

- No, not at all.
- Okay.

Thanks to you,
Kirk took down those comments

and posted an apology.

The phone is finally ringing again.

It rang once, Amy. We have one client.

Yes, but Colette is well connected.

So if she refers us to her friends,

then we'll have more
business than we can handle.

I hope so. I do.

Is that...?

Hi Andrea?

- Hi Ty. Amy.
- Hey.

We uh-we didn't know you were coming.

Clint must have forgotten to tell us.

Oh, he doesn't know.

I wanted it to be a surprise.

Is Luke in the house?

- Um...
- I'm not s-sure right...

I have something that
I want to give him.

Oh. Well, you can give it to us and...

Yeah, we will make sure he gets it.

I would rather give it to him in person.

It won't take long. I promise.

Mom?!

Ah! Hello sunshine.

Oh! Mom!

Oh!

I missed you so much.

I missed you too.

Why didn't you tell me you were coming?

I wanted to surprise you.

I have something for you. What?

Go ahead. Open it.

How about I open it inside?

That way you can see the
house and my new room.

Come on. Let's go!

Okay, slow down. I'm coming.

I think I'm gonna call Clint?

That's a good idea.
I'll head in with them.

Okay.

This is the kitchen.

Come on!

And this is where we
have big family dinners.

Katie, Lyndy this is my mom.

Hi.

You should see my room. It's amazing.

- Yeah?
- Yeah!

Luke gets the whole attic to himself.

Luke why don't you go clean your room

- before your mom sees it.
- Do I have to?

Yes. It's a huge mess.

And Katie could you maybe go
read Lyndy a book in your room.

But we just finished a book.

Then read another.

Come on, Lyndy.

Andrea, I guess,
I'm just a little confused.

I thought we agreed that all
visits would be scheduled.

Then it wouldn't have been a surprise.

Maybe next time you
want to surprise Luke

you could talk to Ty and I first.

That way we're all on the same page.

Do you want me to leave?

That's not what I said.

I just-I wanna make sure we're
doing what's best for Luke.

Yeah. Okay.

That makes both of us.

Wow,
this is the place you rented?

I guess so...

Why's it for sale?

I don't know.

You know, this doesn't look
at all like the photos.

Something isn't right.

Hold on. Wait.

You put a new coat of paint
on those out buildings,

and a herd of cattle in this field.

This is exactly the kind of property

- that I wanna own one day.
- You know what we did.

We were supposed to go left,
not right at the four way stop.

Oh? Oh. That's too bad.

I could've definitely
spend a weekend here.

Hey. Wait 'til you see the rustic cabin.

It's quiet, secluded,

and very romantic.

Oh, I like the sound of that.

Come on, let's go.

Hey Sam.

Jack. Tim.

Well,
that was quite the storm last week?

- How'd you make out?
- Oh. I got pretty lucky.

No major damage. How about you, guys?

Pretty good considering.

One unfortunate thing
we're missing a horse.

My horse, Champ.
You haven't seen him, have you?

No, I'm sorry I haven't.

Well,
with all the fences that have gone down,

I thought maybe he might
have wondered on to Big River

Mind if we have a look around?

Well, normally I wouldn't
have a problem with it,

but with all these trees
down blocking the trails.

I just don't think it's safe.

Well, Sam,
I owned the property for a long time.

I kinda know it like
the back of my hand.

- I think we'll be okay.
- Yeah, well...

I'm-I'm serious.

My horse almost broke his leg yesterday.

And I just think you
should probably stay clear

until I have a chance to
clean up all the trees.

For your safety.

But I will keep an eye out for... Champ?

He's that beautiful palomino, right?

Yeah.

Yeah. All right.
I'll let you know if I see him.

Well, that'll be much appreciated.

We'll be on our way.

Well, that was real neighborly.

Ah. He's just being cautious, is all.

Hey, why don't you open this now?

Wow...

it's a drone!

- Do you like it?
- I love it!

This is amazing!
I've always wanted one of these!

But aren't these expensive?

Don't you worry about that.

I didn't see you for Christmas,

and I only got you that
card for your birthday,

so it's kind of like two gifts in one.

Thank you so much, Mom.

Oh, you're welcome.

Why don't we get this out of the box

and see how it works, huh?

Yeah, but first,
I have something to show you.

Looks great, Luke.

So what did you think?

I was so impressed.

You look like a natural out there.

Why don't you go help Ty, Luke.

All right.

I can't believe he can ride like that.

My Grandpa taught him.

You know,
he's been practicing every day.

When Luke was younger he
was obsessed with dinosaurs

then it was uh,
comic books and video games.

I just never thought that
he'd be interested in horses.

Well, I never thought I would be either.

- Here.
- Thanks.

But there is something about this place.

The longer you stay the more
it kinda gets in your blood.

Would it be okay if my
mom stayed for dinner?

Oh. I would love to,

but I really should get going.

But you just got here.

- She can stay, right, Amy?
- Yeah, sure.

Well,
they got the rustic part right.

Yeah, just not the charming.

Oh boy.

Well, I mean...

it's not that bad.

What part isn't "that bad"?
The moldy food on the table

or the 20-years of cigarette
smoke caked to the walls?

The part where you and I

have the entire weekend to ourselves.

No distractions. Yeah. You're right.

I'm still leaving a
very negative review,

but you're right.

Let's unload the truck and
we can make some dinner.

Or how about we just
leave that for right now.

- Yeah?
- Yeah.

Oh, Mitch.

Yeah. Agh.

Um,
what are the chances that we can just

ignore that right now and...

Okay. Fine.

I will deal with the...

mouse.

Don't kill it.

Yeah. No, I know.

Catch and release.

That horse...

it's like something out of a fairytale.

She's beautiful, isn't she?

I don't think we've met. I'm Georgie.

Oh. Andrea. Luke's mom.

Nice. He's a good kid.

Yeah, he told me about you.

He said um,

that you were a lot like him.

That you came to this ranch
when you were his age.

Yeah, I did.

I guess I-I've never left.

My mom, Amy's sister,
adopted me seven years ago.

- Hey.
- Hey.

Is there anything that I can help with?

I don't think so. Everything is made.

I just have to heat it up.

Okay.

Uh,

look I know it was wrong for
me to just show up like this.

So why did you do it then?

Well, I had to see my son.

Surely you can understand
that as a mother.

I can.

And surely as a mother
you can understand

why I was concerned.

One of the last times I saw
you it was freezing cold,

and Luke was sleeping in your car.

And that was the worst night of my life.

I've been doing everything
in my power since then

to get better.

You don't have to explain, Andrea.

No, I want to.

I've been struggling with
something for my entire life,

not knowing what it was.

When they told me that
I had bipolar disorder,

I was actually relieved,

because now at least
I have a name for it.

And yeah,
there've been some bumps along the way,

but my medication is really
helping me to deal with it,

and so is my therapy.

For the first time in my life,

I can actually say that I'm
doing really, really well.

Well, that's great.

I am happy for you.

Yeah.

My doctor actually says,

that I'm ready to
leave the facility now.

I've got a job and an
apartment lined up.

So it's not gonna be very long

until Luke can move back in with me.

Hopefully by the
beginning of next month.

I don't'
think you should rush in anything.

Luke can stay here as long as...

Yeah. Thank you for
everything that you've done,

but Luke belongs with me.

And the sooner that we're back together,

the sooner we can all
move on with our lives.

- Remember the day we met Sam?
- Yeah.

Remember the first thing
out of his mouth was

how much he liked the look of Champ.

And he offered to buy him,
and I said no way.

- You remember that?
- Yeah. So what?

Yeah.
Well, what if Sam is the kind of guy

that doesn't like to
take no for an answer.

Maybe he found Champ after the storm

and decided finders keepers.

Do you know how paranoid
you sound right now?

Yeah.
Well, how else do you explain my horse

disappearing like that?

The only place we haven't
checked is Big River.

- So where else could he be?
- Listen to me.

I know you're concerned
about your horse,

he'll turn up, we'll find him.

What if I'm right? Huh?

We can't just do nothing.

I'll talk to Sam tomorrow.

Alone. Neighbor to neighbor.

I'd rather not make
enemies with the guy.

Not if I don't have to.

Since when do you brush client horses?

This isn't just any client horse.

This is a Gypsy Vanner.

They're basically unicorns.

Did you know they were once used

to pull caravans across Europe?

I did not. But I'm not surprised.

She is really powerful.

- What was riding her like?
- Incredible!

She's so smooth,
but really friendly and gentle.

I can't believe she just
spends her life standing around

- in a field.
- What do you mean?

Well, her owner doesn't ride.

She just likes the way Ophelia looks.

She's basically a lawn ornament.

- Well, that's just wrong.
- Yeah, it is.

But maybe we could do
something about it.

She just showed up out of the blue?

Yeah.
She said she wanted to surprise Luke.

Well, what? Is she having
some sort of mental breakdown?

- Or something?
- No.

I mean, at least I don't think so.

I talked to Clint, and he said
that she's doing really well.

Well, she can't just show
up here whenever she wants,

- can she?
- She's not supposed to.

And Clint said that we
could ask her to leave

- if we wanted to but...
- What good would that do?

Well, if Andrea's doing better,

and there's no reason to believe

that she's a danger to Luke, then...

well, uninvited or not,
she's our guest so.

- Yeah.
- Yeah. You're right.

Let's wash up for dinner then.

Okay.

- You okay?
- Yeah.

Yeah, it's good news about Andrea.

I guess that means that Luke
will be able to move back in

with her soon.

Well, that was the plan all along,
right?

For him to be reunited with his mom.

Mhmm.

You know,
when we were designing our new house,

I always pictured the
room across from Lyndy's

to be Luke's.

Yeah. Me too.

I guess,
I just thought we'd have more time.

So did I.

Thanks, Amy.

Everything was wonderful.

You're welcome.

Oh boy, it's getting late I
should probably hit the road.

You're not driving back to
the city tonight, are you?

On no, I was planning on
staying at a motel in Hudson.

Don't be silly, you can stay here.

That's really generous of you but...

you've already been more than kind.

No. I'm serious.

My sister is away for the weekend.

You can stay in her room.
It's no trouble.

- Are you sure?
- Yeah.

And...

I'm sorry about earlier.

If I was being a little hard on you.

Oh... uh...

no, it's okay.

I feel like I should be
the one to apologize.

I really should have told
you that I was coming.

Okay. I'll go and get my
stuff out of the car then.

Okay.

Hey Amy,

you are making it really hard.

What?

To not like you.

Hey, you know what my
favorite part of this weekend

has been so far?

Was it the mouse eating
crumbs off the table?

Or the fact that there's no hot water?

Neither of those things.

Was having coffee with you this morning.

Oh.

You read your book. I made us eggs.

I know it's just a small,
simple thing, but...

it got me really excited
about us living together.

Me too.

Speaking of which,

I think that we should
start looking for a place.

Yeah. Absolutely.

You think we should
get a three bedrooms?

Like one for us,
one for Katie and one for Georgie?

Or do you think Georgie's
gonna wanna stay

at the loft in Heartland?

I don't know.
I haven't thought about it.

I mean,
if I was Georgie I would wanna stay.

It's just like having
your own apartment.

But we gotta make sure
Katie has an awesome room.

She's gonna lose her
mind when she realizes

she doesn't have to share with anybody.

Yeah... totally. You all set?

Yeah. Ready.

Okay, I'll call a realtor next week,

get the ball rolling.

Hopefully we can find a place

before Katie starts school in the fall.

Yeah, that would be... perfect.

Okay. Just wait.

Okay, open your eyes.

I tried to make it look like a caravan.

- What do you think?
- That depends.

- Do I get to ride in it?
- Of course.

Then I love it.

Come on, let's go!

This is so amazing, Mom.
Thank you so much.

You're really good at this.

Is that the-the drone?

- Yeah.
- Where is it?

- It's behind the wagon there.
- Oh yeah.

So... so what does that do?

Well,
that's to pitch the camera up and down.

You see? Look how clear that is?

Yeah.

Can I talk to you guys for a second.

- Yeah.
- In private.

Sure.

I was thinking of taking
Luke out for ice cream later.

Okay. Why don't we all go?

I was hoping it could
just be the two of us.

Oh.

I'll be heading back
to the city tonight,

and I thought it might be nice
to spend some time with Luke

before I have to say goodbye.

It won't be a problem, will it?

Uh. No. Yeah, it's fine.

He's probably gonna ask for two scoop,
though...

And he'll never finish it.

I know.

How far can you fly that thing?

- Pretty far.
- Yeah. 50 meters?

- A thousand meters?
- I dunno.

Ty said I'm only allowed
to use it in the yard.

Can I try it?

- Yeah. Yeah, sure.
- Thanks.

Stay. Just...

Yeah, here. There you go.

Okay. Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah.

I can't get over how
great this property is.

Yeah, it has a lot of potential.

I wonder how much it's selling for.

It's actually less than you think.

How would you know?

I looked it up last night.

- Really?
- Yeah. Just out of curiosity.

I know we can't really consider it,

it's too far away from Hudson. But...

I don't know, wouldn't,

wouldn't you think we'd be
happy at a place like this.

Yeah, about that...

I know we said we'd look
at places next week,

but... I'm kinda busy at the diner so.

That's all right,
we can do it the week after.

Yeah... okay.

It's just so busy in the
summer at the dude ranch.

Maybe the fall would be better,

although we're already booking up.

- So I'd... I'd have to see.
- Actually I was thinking

that we would be living
together by fall.

I just...

I don't think that's realistic.

Okay... um...

what do you think a
realistic time frame?

I don't know.

You don't know.

Listen, Lou, um...

I'm a little confused here.

Okay. I jus...
I-I need you to be honest with me.

Are we moving in together or not?

Great.

I guess that's my answer right there.

No, Mitch.

Mom? I think we're going the wrong way.

The ranch is in the other direction.

We're not going back
to the ranch just yet.

Why not?

It's a surprise.

But won't Ty and Amy
wonder where we are?

Mom, I don't need any more surprises.

You already got me the drone.

But this is something different.

You're gonna love it.

Good girl, Ophelia.

Hey, they should be back by now.

It's only been a couple of hours.

How long does it take to get ice cream?

We can't wait any longer, Amy.

I have to call the police.

Okay.

Ty, wait.

Wait. I think that's them.

- Hey.
- Hey,

sorry we're a little bit late.

Luke, why don't you go up to your room

and get ready for bed.

It's okay, go ahead.

Where were you?

We went to get ice cream. I told you.

- For this whole time?
- No.

Uh, we went to go and see a
movie in Calgary afterwards.

Andrea, you should have called first.

We didn't know where you were.
I almost called the police.

- The police?
- Yes.

Look,
I know that we're a little bit late,

but I don't see why you're making

such a big deal out of this.

Because we're his foster parents

if anything happens to him,
we're responsible.

Well, not for long.

Where are you going?

To say goodnight to my son.

I'm leaving now.

I just wanted to say goodbye.

Are you mad at me?

Okay.

I know I should have told them.

But everything is fine now.

No, Mom, it's not fine.

- Amy and Ty...
- Yeah, I talked to them.

They're good.

Mom,

I'm not good.

I...

I was scared.

You don't have to be scared.

Ty and Amy were upset with me, not you.

I'm the adult, remember?

I just wanted you to have a good time.

I wasn't scared I was
gonna get in trouble.

I was scared that we
weren't coming back.

I thought we were gonna
leave without saying goodbye.

Why would you think that?

Because that's what
happened the last time.

You said we were going on a trip,

but it wasn't just a trip.

We never went back home.

Luke...

I am so, so sorry

that I ever did that to you.

Okay?

It wasn't your fault.

You weren't feeling well.

That's why I've been working so hard,

and doing everything that
the doctors tell me to do

because I'm gonna make
sure that nothing like that

ever happens again.

Promise?

Yes, I promise.

Andrea?

Hey Sam!

How goes the clean up?

You know,
we're getting there - little by little.

Listen, I came back to ask you...

would it really be that big a deal

if Tim and I took a quick look
around your ranch for Champ?

It's not necessary.

I've been keeping an eye out,

- I haven't seen your horse.
- Still...

we'd just spend a couple of hours here.

And I know we'd all
sleep way better at night

knowing that we looked everywhere.

Well, like I said before,

I don't think it's a good idea.
It's not safe.

You know,

you almost sound like you
might have something to hide.

Mounted archery?

You haven't done that in awhile.

I thought I'd give it a try on Ophelia.

On Ophelia?

She's really talented, Amy.

You told Colette that you
would exercise her horse.

Hooking Ophelia up to a
wagon was already pushing it.

This might be too much too soon.

She's ready for it.

She's bored of standing around

and desperate for some activity.

Colette is our first
client in a very long time.

We need to have a happy customer.

I get that, but...

what if none of this Kirk
stuff had ever happened?

And it was just business as usual,

and Colette told you that
her super talented horse

would just stand around
for the rest of her life?

It's a lot more complicated than that.
Okay?

We're talking about the
future of our business here.

And I'm talking about
the future of a horse,

something that used to matter
to you more than business.

You should ride her. Then you'll see.

Well, I tried talking to Sam,

and I'm starting to think
you might be right about him.

What's that you got there?

It's a controller for a drone.

It's Luke's new toy.

Why do you have it?

Because I'm using it to
search Big River for my horse.

The best part is,
it's not even trespassing.

I don't even know where
to start right now.

Cool down, it's not a big deal.

Not a big deal?
Have you lost your marbles?

First of all,
I can't believe you stole a kid's toy.

I borrowed it.

And second, trespassing is trespassing

whether it's on the
ground or in the air.

Well, I wouldn't have to
do it in the first place

if Sam had been a more reasonable guy.

But doesn't really matter

because I've searched
the whole property.

And there's no sign of Champ.

- Who is that?
- I don't...

That looks like Sam.

Oh great,
now he thinks we're spying on him.

He can't see us, Jack.

He sees the drone it's
not two way thing.

Oh. Well,
you better fly it out of there.

I'm trying, to do that.

What's he got in his hands?

I don't know.

Let me-let me get closer.

That looks...

that looks like a gun.

That's not good.

Don't worry, I'm not here to see Luke.

I just wanted to talk to you.

Um...

that horse that you were riding it...

could be in a storybook.

This whole ranch could
be in a storybook.

I thought that if I bought
Luke an expensive gift,

and took him to see a
movie that he would think

that I was just as
exciting as this place.

You don't have to
prove anything to Luke.

That's easy for you to say.

You should hear how he
talks about Heartland,

like it's a fairytale.

Andrea,
that's the thing about fairytales

they're not real.

Luke wants is to be with you

more than anything in the world.

That's real.

I just don't know if I'm ready yet.

But I will be.

I'm gonna do what I
need to do to get well,

and to stay that way.

The next time I come

I'm gonna be the kind of
mom that Luke deserves.

I believe you.

Okay. I should go.

Hey, Andrea.

- You're making it hard.
- What?

To not like you.

Okay.

You said you wanted me to be honest

so here it goes...

I need more time.

I love you, Mitch, I do.

And I wanna live with you,

but I need more time.

I need more time for Georgie and Katie,

and for myself.

I'm always rushing into things,

I rush into everything. And I just...

I wanna get this right.

Okay.

I'm good with that.

- You are?
- Yeah...

because I wanna get us right too.

And if that means waiting
until you're ready then...

that means waiting until you're ready

Thank you.

Thank you...

for being honest with me.

Because that's the only way
that this is gonna work, Lou.

I totally agree.

And now...

my turn to be honest
with you about something.

Okay.

I've got this idea,

and I think it's gonna take the pressure

off of us living together.

I'm listening.

I think that we should buy a property,

but like just a vacation property.

Some place that we can
go to on the weekends

or on holidays.

Some place where we can go

get away from our crazy
lives and just be together.

You mean like in the Caribbean?

Like on those TV shows or...?

Ah... kind of...

but much closer.

Thank you for
taking such good care of her.

I really can't thank you enough

for letting her stay here
the weekend with you.

Yeah. No worries.

Hey, Georgie why don't you and Katie,

show Colette what you've
been working on with Ophelia.

- Really?
- Yeah.

Okay.

That was quite impressive.

We just wanted to show you
what Ophelia was capable of.

Well,
it sounds like she'll be happy to have

a little peace and quiet at home.

Actually um,

that's kinda the problem,

she won't be happy.

Uh, I think what Georgie
is trying to say is that,

Ophelia could use some
exercise every now and then.

And even that's not enough.
She's capable of so much more.

So what do you suggest I do,

take up horseback archery?

I'm not a circus performer.

And I'm certainly not going
to sell her to some stranger.

Well, she's not just some piece of art

you can put on display.

Ophelia is my horse,

and she has a good life.

Now, if it's not too much trouble,

could you please put her in
my trailer so I can leave.

Thank you.

Yeah, that's right. That's the piece.

There you go. You take that one.

And you go. Good job.

Hello.

Hey, Tim.

Luke,
thank you for lending me your drone.

I didn't lend it to you.

Right, whatever. I borrowed it.

Now I'm returning it.

Why is it back in the box?

Be-because...

I discovered it had some
technical difficulties,

so I bought you a new one.

Yeah, you're welcome.

Oh, that rule that Ty's has

about flying it only
around our property?

That's an important rule.
Follow that rule.

Okay.

Bye.

Congratulations.

Thank you.

- We'll be in touch.
- Thank you.

We bought a ranch. We bought a ranch.

So what do we call this place?

Our vacation ranch?

Our hobby ranch?

Aspen Grove Ranch,

our home away from home?

I like it.

Come on.

- Oh wait. Wait-wait-wait.
- What?

I always wanted to do this.

You crazy.

- You're so romantic.
- I know.

Okay. So Dad and Grandpa are
gonna check the south side

of the property for Champ.

We should probably start with the north.

Yeah. Sounds like a plan.

Listen, Colette um...

I'm really sorry for what I said.

No. Don't be.

I've had some time to reflect on things,

and I've come to realize
you and Amy are right.

Ophelia isn't a piece
of art in my collection,

and it's high time I stopped
treating her like that.

So if she's as talented
as you say she is,

maybe you can help me put
those talents to good use.

Of course. We'd be more than happy to.

I-I hate to ask, but...

is there still a possibility
that you might be willing

to write that review?

I already did.

Okay.

- What does it say?
- Just give me a second.

"Heartland is that rare place

where the horse always comes first.

They're not afraid to speak the truth,

even when it's not what
the owner wants to hear.

My horse Ophelia couldn't
have been in better hands."

Not bad.

Not bad at all.

You guys! You have to see this!

- What? What is it?
- Look.

I don't believe it.

Okay, we got your message.

What's the big mystery?

Well, Luke and Katie were
flying the drone around here.

And they saw something that
you might be interested in.

It's... Cha...

Champ?!

Well, I guess he was so sick of you

he's ran off and joined
a gang of wild horses.
