Hawaii Five-O (1968–1980): Season 9, Episode 7 - Heads, You're Dead - full transcript

In an episode based on a real-life case (the villains on this show are even WORSE than their real-life counterparts), a gang of hijackers sign on as crew members of luxury yachts, then murder the owners and steal the boats to sell in South America. Danno and Sandi Welles go undercover to track them down, but Sandi is taken hostage on one of the boats. The title of the episode comes from the particularly sadistic gang leader flipping a coin to decide whether Sandi and the other hostages, whom he's going to throw overboard, will be given a life raft (this is also taken from the real-life case; both times the life raft won the toss).

LORD: This is Jack Lord
inviting you to be with us next

for "Heads, You're Dead."

MAN: Why would
they kill my parents?

In the past year, four
yachts had been hijacked

for use in smuggling
Asian heroin into the islands.

Not once has a witness
been left behind alive.

Honey, come on inside
or I'll blow your face off.

Where did you leave her exactly?

DANNY: Checking the east
slips at Carmona Marina.

This would be her great
circle route to Hong Kong.

But if they figure
they're being followed

wouldn't they get out
of the shipping lanes?

MAN: I think we should extend our
search pattern 200 miles on each side

- of the regular shipping
lanes. McGARRETT: Good idea.

All right, this is where

- all you fine people get off.
- Off?

You didn't expect us to take
you to Hong Kong, did you?

[GRUNTS]

Go! Get off! Get over!

LORD: Next,
"Heads, You're Dead."

Be here, aloha.

JIM: Why would
they kill my parents?

McGARRETT: In the past year,
four yachts have been hijacked

for use in smuggling
Asian heroin into the islands.

Not once has a witness
been left behind alive.

Where did you leave her exactly?

DANNY: Checking the
east slips at Kaimana Marina.

If they figured they're being followed,
wouldn't they get out of the lanes?

BRANNEN: We should
extend our search pattern

200 miles on each side of
the regular shipping lanes.

- This is where you fine
people get off. SANDI: Off?

ELDON: You didn't expect us to take
you all the way to Hong Kong, did you?

VAN CLEEF: Oh, Mr. Thompson.

I just figured out our ETA.

We should be arriving in
Honolulu at about 1300 hours.

Well, then Jim will only
beat us in by a few hours.

- I would say no more than that.
- We've been keeping up well.

I told you we should've
entered this race.

Since we had a
four-day head start,

I'm afraid the race committee
would consider that cheating.

Bama.

[GROANS]

- Do you think we should radio Jim?
- He should be nearing the finish line.

I don't think we should
give him a call just now.

I think you're right.

You two got no respect?

You don't believe in
saluting your new skipper?

And according to our
reporter at Transpac,

there are still 17 yachts
yet to complete the race.

The excitement generated by this
race is no more evident anywhere

than among the faces of
the spectators gathered here

at Diamond Head
to watch the finish.

With most of the yachts
being at sea just under 12 days,

one can well imagine the
fatigue the crew must feel.

And now approaching
the Diamond Head buoy

which marks the finish line is a
boat considered by most experts

to be the most
outstanding of her class:

Tempest.

The Tempest has just
crossed the finish line,

and we're going to check
now for her official time.

The marina is overflowing

with people who have come to
offer the sailors their good wishes.

Many of the boats already
anchored, old friends are reunited.

Parties are taking place in
celebration of a race well sailed.

[CROWD CHATTERING AND LAUGHING]

MAN: Pour it right in.

JIM: Mm. Have some? WOMAN: Oh.

Mm.

- Jim. Hey, Jim. JIM: Yeah?

If Arriba doesn't get in by
1:00, we got second in our class.

All right, all right.

Hey, I almost forgot, got
a radio call from your dad.

- Oh, yeah? When's he due in?
- He's not. He left a message for you.

Said to tell you he and your mom
were gonna split and hit the other islands,

take a couple of
weeks' vacation.

- You're sure that's what he said?
- Got it from Captain Hook himself.

Hey, Rosemary. Let
me have that, babe.

Lady Fame, this is Starfire II.

Whiskey-Yankee-November-5651
calling Lady Fame.

Come in, please.

JIM [OVER RADIO]: Lady
Fame, this is Starfire Il.

Do you copy? Over.

Lady Fame, this is Starfire
Il. Answer if you read. Over.

Dad, this is Jim.
Do you copy? Over.

This is Starfire II.
Whiskey-Yankee-November-5651 out.

Gee, thanks, Mr. Thompson.

Now, you two just sit down and
make yourselves comfortable, okay?

Hey, Eldon?

Me and Bama are gonna go
into town and get some supplies.

Listen, I want you to get a
blanket or a tarp or something

and cover up that name on the
stern in case anybody comes snooping.

- Yeah, sure, Charlie.
- All right. Bama.

Hey, Charlie.

What are we gonna do about them
when we take off to Hong Kong?

We'll take them along for a little
ways, then we'll cancel their tickets.

Okay. Let's put the outboard
on this dinghy, come on.

[RADIO BEEPS]

DANNY [OVER RADIO]:
Williams calling McGarrett.

Yes, Danno?

DANNY: Steve, the
Coast Guard just called.

They said you asked to
be notified immediately

if they got any more
reports about missing yachts.

Those were my instructions.

They just got one on
the yacht Lady Fame

out of Newport Beach.

Call Commander Brannen.
Tell him I'm on my way.

JIM: My parents sailed
over in their own boat

to watch the race, Mr. McGarrett,
just like they do every race year.

They left Long Beach
a few days before I did.

Have you heard
from them since then?

Oh, yeah, I spoke with them

at least once a day on
the radio all the way over.

As a matter of fact, I talked
to my dad just this morning.

We were only a few hours out,

and he was laying, oh,
30 or so miles off my stern.

I'm not sure I
understand your concern.

Well, after we tied up, I was
given a radio message from my dad

saying that he and my mom were
gonna cruise around the other islands

and spend a couple of weeks.

For the past six months,

my parents and I have
been planning to sail to Tahiti.

And we were only gonna lay over here
until after the awards dinner Tuesday.

Are you certain whoever
took that message

spoke directly to your father?

JIM: He was positive.

- Who was it?
- His name is Richie. Richie Edwards.

He's a member of my crew.

- And where can we reach him?
- At the Ilikai.

Now, have you tried
to contact your parents

since you got that message?

Several times.

There was no answer, and
that's what really worries me.

I've got a search underway, Steve,
but so far we've come up empty.

Well, there aren't many
places on this island

that you can hide
a boat that size.

ELDON: You all ready?
BAMA: Yeah, I got it.

ELDON: You be sure you tie
that blanket down real good.

[GUN COCKS]

BAMA: Hey, out there!
Out! Leave us alone!

Get out of here!

No, the Coast Guard will
be swarming all over us.

The boat's already made
us. It's gonna spoil everything.

[GUNSHOT]

This is Whiskey-Zebra-Golf-9299
calling Coast Guard Honolulu.

Come in. Over.

RADIOMAN [OVER RADIO]: Go
ahead, Whisky-Z ebra-Golf-9299.

Some creeps from
a boat just shot at us.

Did you sustain any damage?

No, I don't think so.

Roger. What's your
present position?

North Shore, about two
miles south of Kawela Bay.

Roger. Were you able to
identify the boat that fired on you?

Yeah, the Lady Fame. There
were three guys on deck.

Roger, Whiskey-Zebra-Golf-9299.
Maintain radio contact. Out.

This is hot, chief. Better get
this to the O.D. on the double.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

- McGarrett. MALIA
[OVER PHONE]: Telephone.

- Commander Brannen on line one.
- Put him on, please. Frank?

Uh, Steve, we just got a line on
that missing yacht, the Lady Fame.

Has she turned up?

No, not exactly, but
we know where she is.

A cove up near Kawela
Bay on the North Shore.

[OVER PHONE] Some
nut onboard with a rifle

opened up on a
powerboat passing by.

With a rifle?

- Any explanation?
BRANNEN: None.

I've got a chopper
on surveillance,

and I've got a boat standing by if
you'd like to run up there with me.

On my way, Frank. Thank you.

Let's see what this is.

Yeah.

Careful.

My God.

McGARRETT: Coast Guard Honolulu?

Coast Guard Honolulu,
this is McGarrett.

Come in, please.

This is Coast Guard Honolulu,
Mr. McGarrett, go ahead.

I'm aboard the yacht Lady Fame,

anchored somewhere
near Kawela Bay

on the north shore of Oahu.

[OVER RADIO] Please notify H.P.D.
that we found two bodies aboard.

We've tentatively identified them
as Celeste and Lyle Thompson.

Do not, repeat, do
not release the names

until we've
notified next of kin.

Roger. We'll take care of it.
This is Coast Guard Honolulu out.

What do you think,
Steve? Robbery?

Well, they probably took
everything that wasn't nailed down.

The chronometer
and sextant are gone,

so are the watches and rings.

But I'm more interested in
finding out what happened

to those three crewmen
who fired on those kids.

Let's go.

There's also the captain, Van
Cleef. What happened to him?

According to the son, he's skippered
for the family for the past 20 years.

McGARRETT: Wait a
minute. Wait a minute.

Frank.

This might explain what
happened to the captain, huh?

I guess that means there's nobody
left alive that can tell us anything.

Nobody except the killers.

The dinghy's not here. They
must have gone ashore in that.

I'd like to try to find
that dinghy, Frank.

If they beached it, it would at
least give us a starting point.

Right.

I'll leave a couple hands
onboard here for security.

They can keep an eye on
things until the police arrive.

But tell them not to touch
anything until our Lab boys get here.

BRANNEN: I'll see to it.

You two stay onboard here.
Leave everything just as it is.

OFFICER: Yes, sir.

McGARRETT: Oh, wait a minute.

There it is. There it is,
Frank, over in that little cove.

- See it?
- Yes, I see it.

With the head start they
have, they'll be long gone,

but at least we pinpointed
where they've come ashore.

I'd like to have that rubber
dinghy picked up, Frank.

- May I use your radio?
- Right.

Coast Guard Honolulu,
Coast Guard Honolulu.

This is McGarrett,
Five-0. Come in, please.

RADIOMAN [OVER RADIO]:
Coast Guard Honolulu. Go ahead.

I'd like a patch to Officer Dan
Williams at the Five-0 headquarters.

[PHONE RINGS]

Williams.

- Danno?
- Yeah, Steve?

McGARRETT [OVER PHONE]:
We found where the killers put ashore.

A mile south of Kawela Bay.

That's a short hike
to the Kam Highway.

McGARRETT: Right, and that's
probably where they headed.

I want you to call H.P.D.,

seal off the highway
from Kahuku to Waimea.

Right.

McGARRETT: And set
up an immediate search

of the entire North Shore area.

Get Chin, Duke, and as many
officers as H.P.D. can spare.

I'll get on it right
away, Steve.

[DIALING PHONE]

But why?

Why would they kill my parents?

I don't know, Jim.

What happened to your
parents, though, fits a pattern.

In the past year, four offshore
yachts have been hijacked

for use in smuggling
Asian heroin into the islands.

Not once has a witness
been left behind alive.

Yeah, but my father
called over the radio.

He was okay then.

He was probably
forced to make that call.

What do you know about the
three men your parents signed on

to crew for them?

Uh, very little.

I never met them.

My parents told
me they were young.

Just out of the merchant marine,

and they seemed to
be very good sailors.

What are you doing
about finding them?

We have an all-points
bulletin out on them.

All highways leading from
the North Shore are blocked.

Nobody can get through.

We'll let you know as
soon as anything develops.

All right.

[JIM SIGHS]

- Thank you.
- Thanks for coming in, Jim.

- Please get them, Mr. McGarrett.
- Yeah.

I'm not looking for vengeance.

I just don't wanna
see anyone else hurt.

We'll get them.

[CHARLIE, BAMA & ELDON SINGING]

It's really nice to work with
you again, Officer Williams.

Since we're a team for a while,
why don't we make it Sandi and Dan?

Okay, Dan.

Um, did Mr. McGarrett
request me for this assignment?

- You mean personally?
- Mm-hm.

Sorry, Sandi, I'm afraid you
were just part of a package deal.

Oh, well, heh.

I guess I'm just suffering
through some kind of identity crisis.

[BOTH SPEAKING IN CHINESE]

Oh. What do we have here, Chin?

He wanted to sit in your chair.

McGARRETT: Oh,
good, good, let him.

[SPEAKS IN CHINESE]

We may have something, Steve.

The old man picked
up three hitchhikers

on the North Shore yesterday

and dropped them off at Kapolei
Road, near the university turnoff.

What brought him to us?

Says his son heard about
the hijackers on the news.

Was he able to give
you descriptions?

Yeah, one had a beard.

Otherwise, all Caucasians
look alike to him.

[CHIN HO CHUCKLES]

Has H.P.D. been notified?

Yeah, they dropped a
net over the whole area.

So far, they've drawn a blank.

[McGARRETT SIGHS]

McGARRETT: Which means we
still have all zeros on our scoreboard.

Take him to your office.

Any scrap of information you
can come up with would be helpful.

All right.

[FARMER SPEAKS IN CHINESE]

Thank you. Thank you.

- Kapolei Road, university cutoff.
- Not much of a pattern.

There are four marinas
within a few miles

of where they were dropped off.

That's a lot of boats
to choose from, Steve.

That's if they chose a boat.

- Looks like we got us a boat.
- Look at it, Charlie.

ELDON: When are we gonna do it?

Well, we wanna wait till they
finish loading up the supplies for us.

- Don't we? Huh?
- Right, right, right.

Come on, let's take a walk.

[DOOR OPENS THEN CLOSES]

DANNY: Yeah, Steve?
- Danno.

I want two-man teams
assigned to every marina.

If the hijackers surface and try to
sign on any boat leaving the islands,

I wanna be the first
one to know about it.

[INTERCOM BUZZES]

If we can...

- McGarrett. MALIA:
Long-distance call

from Chief Inspector
Quincy in Hong Kong.

- Oh, good, good, put him
on, please. MALIA: Yes, sir.

Philip? How are you?

QUINCY [OVER PHONE]: I may
have something of interest for you.

Good, go ahead.

QUINCY: The context
of the conversation

was that all systems are still go
on a heroin shipment into Honolulu.

Do you know his contact
here, who made the call?

QUINCY: I had the call traced

and came up with a
local number for you.

555-8986.

[PEN SCRATCHING]

555-8986.

Thank you, Philip. This might
be the break we're waiting for.

Aloha.

Danno, check the address
that goes with this phone number

and arrange for H.P.D. backup.

We're gonna hit them. Let's go.

McGarrett to all units,
McGarrett to all units.

Take your position.
We're going in.

Sandi?

Hi.

I'll take the west
end, you take the east.

Okay. Uh...

Try not to act too salty in
your outfit, Officer Williams.

[MAN LAUGHS]

MAN [OVER RADIO]: All units:

Three men answering the
description of the 241 suspects

reported seen at Okalani Marina.

All units in vicinity
respond. Code 3.

Williams, Five-0, proceeding.

Honey.

Come on inside. Or
I'll blow your face off.

Come on.

Come on.

My, my, will you look
what we have here?

- Hey, man, where'd she come from?
- She was sneaking around topside.

Check her ID.

Nothing here but an
old identification card.

"Sandi Welles, 137 Kapaloa
Street, Honolulu, Hawaii."

Now, I wanna know
what you're doing here.

I was just looking for
some friends. I was...

I was invited to a cocktail
party. Is this the Vista Princess?

You know damn
well what boat this is.

Well, anyone can make a mistake.

If you'll just take your hand
off my throat, I'll be on my way.

Tie her up with the others.

[CHARLIE GRUNTS THEN LAUGHS]

- Sorry, Officer Williams, false alarm.
- What happened?

Three juiced-up local boys

tried to play Mutiny on the
Bounty with one of the boats.

Say, I hear you got
yourself a new partner.

What'd you do with her?

Steve, Sandi Welles didn't show
up at the briefing this morning.

When did you see her last?

Yesterday, about an hour before I
split to respond to that false alarm.

Where did you leave her exactly?

Checking the east
slips at Kaimana Marina.

Have you tried calling her home?

Yeah, she didn't show up
all night. Nobody's seen her.

- Malia? MALIA: Yes, sir?

Get me Commander Brannen
of the Coast Guard, please.

MALIA: Right away.
- Strange.

We checked, Steve.

The only offshore yacht to pull
out of Kaimana Marina yesterday

was the Sea Sage.

- Any idea what time she pulled out?
- We don't know that.

We just don't have the
facilities or the personnel

to keep an eye on every boat
that's running around these islands.

Well...

This would be her great
circle route to Hong Kong.

But if they figure
they're being followed,

wouldn't they get out
of the shipping lanes?

Yeah, probably.

Drop down to the
south, pick up the trades.

I think we should
extend our search pattern

200 miles on each side of
the regular shipping lanes.

- Good idea.
- I've got the Cape Corwin standing by.

- I'm just waiting for word from you.
- Let's go.

You know, missy,

if you're still thinking about
help a-coming, there won't be any.

We're miles away from where
anybody would be looking.

SANDI: I was thinking
about how hot it is

slaving over this
stove for you guys.

Aw.

Maybe in a while, Charlie
might let you go swimming.

Hey.

Said you was an airline stewardess.
Supposing I don't buy that?

Suppose I'm not selling it.
It happens to be the truth.

Missy, missy, don't you pay
Charlie over there no never mind.

He's the product of a
broken home, ha, ha.

That's right.

Hell, I was the
one that broke it.

You never mind about that.
Just fix the chow, would you?

You asked for Spanish
omelets. They take a little longer.

BAMA: Mm.

Hey, missy, don't you forget to put
a little dash of this hot sauce on that.

Mm.

Uh, do you mind?

What'd you do the
toast with, a blowtorch?

When you ordered me to fix breakfast,
you forgot to ask if I could cook.

Looks fine to me.

You better eat your
eggs while they're still hot.

Hellfire, he's having
a conniption fit.

SANDI: Unh!
- You're a funny lady.

I didn't know how much to put
on it. You wanted the hot sauce.

You do a number like that on
me, better learn to dance with it.

- You eat it.
- I don't like omelets.

- Eat it!
- Unh.

[COUGHING]

CHARLIE: You're just starting,
lady. You're just starting.

Come on.

This is Coast Guard 1350.

DANNY [OVER RADIO]: Calling
Coast Guard Cutter Cape Corwin.

McGarrett. Yeah,
go ahead, Danno.

We're holding the
search pattern, Steve.

So far a big fat zero.

Stay with it, Danno.
She's out there somewhere.

All right, now, come on.

Let's go.

- Got them all here.
CHARLIE: Come on, hurry up.

Come on, come on. All right.

- This is where you fine people get off.
- Off?

You didn't expect us to take you
all the way to Hong Kong, did you?

We wouldn't last 30 minutes
in these waters without a raft.

- Oh, yeah? Try it.
- Hey, hey, hey, Charlie?

- I got an idea.
- Yeah?

Let's flip them for it.
Tails, you get the life raft.

Heads, you're dead. Ha-ha-ha.

All right. That sounds
fair enough to me.

But as I always
said, first things first.

And now the first thing I
want you all to do is get off.

Come on. All right,
you're first, you're first.

Get up there, get up
there, get up there!

You, get over, get over.

- Get over there.
- I hope you sink.

[CHARLIE LAUGHING]

They're turning around.

What do you
figure they're up to?

Must be your lucky day, missy.
That old nickel just came up tails.

- Come on, come on.
- Yeah, hey.

- All right.
- Hey, we got a raft.

[SANDI PANTING]

SANDI: Okay.

- Come on, Sandi.
SANDI: Thank you.

- Ah. Thank you. RAMSEY:
Oh, I should've known.

SANDI: What?
- Coming back like that.

- They punched a
hole in it. SANDI: Oh.

- No, they punched two.
SANDI: They've got to be sick.

Hey, here's some tape.

Maybe we can patch it
up with some of this stuff.

It won't last very long once the
sun and the seawater get to it.

- Coffee, Steve?
- Oh, thank you.

It's starting to leak pretty bad up
here. How much of that tape we got left?

MURPHY: That's it, skipper.

I know things don't look too
good right now, Miss Welles.

- But if you stop to think about it...
- It gets worse.

I sure hope he hasn't
seen that movie.

Yep, he's still there.

Let's see, yesterday
morning I got up, showered.

Didn't have any orange
juice. But that was cool.

You guys know that commercial
on television about the fruit punch

where the big guy
punches out the little guy?

So I thought I would
make myself some.

So I got a bunch of fresh
fruit and I put it in a blender.

But I must have put in too
much papaya or something.

It really tasted weird.

And then I got dressed
and went down to the station,

and Sergeant Matsu said it was
gonna be another routine day.

Routine day.

Here I am 24 hours later,

floating around in the
middle of the Pacific Ocean

in a leaky life raft,

surrounded by a bunch of sharks

who look like they
haven't eaten in weeks.

I'm so thirsty, I
cannot stand it.

And all I can think of is why did
I throw away that lousy punch?

Look.

- Hey, hey!
- Hey, there's a plane up there.

Yeah, here.

Hey, over here!

- Over there, Mike, what is it?
- I'm not sure.

Sometimes the sun hitting the
water just right makes it glare like that.

Over here! Help! Over here.

Help! Help!

- Help! Help! MURPHY:
Hey, over here, help!

Hey!

- They didn't see us.
Ugh. RAMSEY: Help! Yeah!

Help!

Let's check it out.

Hey, look.

- Hey! Hey, over here!
RAMSEY: Help! Help!

SANDI: Over here!
We're down here!

They've found us. Can you
believe it? They found us.

RAMSEY: Help! Hey,
hey! MURPHY: Hey!

Over here! Over here! Hey, hey!

SANDI: Here! MURPHY: Over here!

Yeah, here, here!

SANDI: No, over here!

DANNY [OVER
RADIO]: Come in, Steve.

Yeah, Danno, go ahead.

We've spotted the raft, Steve.
Sandi's aboard with three men.

DANNY: The raft is
taking on a lot of water.

What's your position?

What grid are you in?

I got a cutoff, Danno.
Can you come in?

Please repeat.
What is your position?

What grid are you in?

DANNY: Grid 27, Quadrant 9.
- Thank you.

There she is, Steve.

[DISCO MUSIC PLAYING ON RADIO]

BRANNEN: How long ago
did they put you over the side?

I'd say a little
over four hours.

BRANNEN: Well, they
can't have gone too far.

Steve?

I'll have the plane keep on
searching this general course.

Good.

Oh.

- Are you all right?
- Yes, yeah.

[SHIVERING] I guess I got caught
with my hand in the cookie jar.

- What happened?
- Well, I was down at the marina,

and I spotted a man who fit
the description of the hijackers.

So I followed him to
his boat. And he was.

What about weapons?
How are they armed?

Uh, the one man, Charlie,
had an automatic rifle.

The other two had handguns.

Would you like
something warm to drink?

Oh, would I.

- Good, come on.
- Okay.

ELDON: Charlie, she ain't just
buzzing around our heads for nothing.

CHARLIE: Been
following us for two hours.

Can't stay up there forever.

Soon as she runs out of gas,
we'll change course, 220 southwest.

Charlie, look.

CHARLIE: Hey.

[GUN COCKS]

Sea Sage, this is
McGarrett, Hawaii Five-0.

Stand by to be boarded.

- Heave to, come about.
CHARLIE: Go to hell!

This is the final warning. Heave
to. Throw down your weapons.

We are sending a boarding party.

[GUNFIRE]

[GRUNTS]

[GUNFIRE]

Everyone take cover. Open fire.

[GUNFIRE]

Hands up. Throw
down your weapons.

Uh, if you fellas are
gonna be around for supper,

I'll be happy to
cook it for you.

Take them below
and lock them up.

SANDI: Mr. McGarrett?

- I'm really embarrassed.
- About what?

Well, as you know, it's a cardinal sin
for a police officer to lose his badge.

His badge?

Mine. But it was intentional.

I didn't want them to
know I was a police officer.

I see.

Well, under the circumstances,

I'm sure we can arrange
to get you another one.

What's your number?
