Haven (2010–2015): Season 5, Episode 4 - Much Ado About Mara - full transcript

Nathan and Dwight argue over what to do with Mara; Nathan is convinced Audrey is still alive and he wants to save her but Dwight wants Mara to cure the troubles.

- Previously on haven...
- Jody? - Don't come any closer.
You have no idea what I've already done.
[electricity crackles] - she came by the gull.
Got the burn marks to prove it.
- Jody needs to absorb light to stay alive?
- I want you to hang on. I'm not gonna let you die.
- Nathan isn't looking for mara. He's working with her.
- [gasps] nathan!
- Parker. - Don't talk to mara.
Talk to me. It's the only way that I can fight her.
- Dance with me, parker.
Audrey. - Yeah.
- It's working. - You do know where they are.
- Nathan has her chained up.
What is this? You two look like you're on your honeymoon.
- Is your head about to pop off?
- Were you really gonna help me release a trouble
That won't kill people?
- I'm the only one who can.
- Mara.
- I'm taking you in right now.
- I need to get a trouble out of duke,
Or else he's going to blow.
- She's right, sasquatch.
- And if he does, all of you could be spattered
With who knows what?
I would suggest that you wait outside.
- The cabin's surrounded.
She tries to leave, take her down.
- Where am I going to go? - Just fix him.
[door opens]
[sighs]
They got some business in there. It's gonna be a few minutes.
- Wuornos isn't back yet, so...
I know you know what's in the journal.
Think. What is a trouble that won't blow us all to hell?
- Scoville.
- Scoville. All right.
Now keep that in the forefront of your mind.
I'm going to lay my hands on you
And then let your blood drop all over the floor.
[breathes deeply]
- Wait.
I am gonna pretend...
That you are audrey and that I trust you.
- Duke.
[gasps] duke.
Mara-- she can help you.
- Audrey? - Please.
Just remember it isn't your fault.
- What? What's not my fault?
- Who said anything about fault?
Stop blabbering...
Okay?
Let's do this.
- [grunts]
- Something's wrong with duke. Mara says she can save him.
- You just told us that she gave us all our troubles
In the first place, and now you think she saves people?
- I'm coming out.
Duke unchained me...
Because he's alive.
Don't shoot.
- [spits] - mitchell.
- Thousands of people have died 'cause of her
- Bother blather, polka dot.
- Duke, you okay?
- Mousey nudged my smelly belly...
- She gave duke a trouble?
Bitch.
- Mitchell, stop.
- Think of all the suffering she caused.
Think of your daughter.
- I am thinking of her and jody and all of us.
Mara gave us the troubles. She deserves worse than death.
But right now she's our best bet to end all of this.
We need her alive. - Bravo, g.I. Joe.
Thank you. Well said.
- Hump a clump, you witchy didgeridoo.
- [giggles]
- Okay, what going on with him?
- He speaks nonsense, but he thinks he's making sense.
[laughing]
What?
It's not gonna kill anyone.
Oh. Oh.
Now g.I. Joe is going to handcuff me.
Oh, I like where this is going.
- I don't think you're going to.
[door opens and closes]
[somber folk music]

- Give me some of your kettle corn...
From your secret stash,
Which I know you have.
After all that hospital food, I deserve some kettle corn.
- That's more than you deserve.
- I don't know what crawled up your--
- Yet this is what I give you.
- What the hell, vincent?
- I nursed you back to health,
Although it cost me the leadership of the guard.
- Dwight's not a bad choice.
- And I did that despite the fact
That you tried to kill me,
That you lied to me about your origins.
All these years, how could you never have told me
Agent howard arranged your adoption?
Found your adoption file where you hid it with cabot's journal.
- Go stuff your high and mighty.
I hid it so you wouldn't know that I was from the other side,
So you wouldn't force me to that cave against my will,
Which you did. - Stop that.
- As far as I'm concerned, we're even.
No, wait.
Now we're even.
We can't function like this, dave.
If you and I can't trust one another...
- It's bad.
- All right, now think.
That time in the cave we can't remember,
You took a beating from someone or something.
- It must be what william promised
And jennifer confirmed with her dying breath--
Something terrible came through that door.
- Something we must track down and stop.
So no more games.
You know something, and you're gonna tell me.
- The time's lost for me too.
We're talking about some great evil beyond imagining.
You don't think I'd tell you if I knew?
- I'm not so sure anymore,
Which means it's time for the iron maiden.
- You wouldn't dare.
- Sit me in the center of the room,
Move everything out of my reach...
You want me to feel like nothing is in my control.
I guess someone read the army field manual
On interrogation.
Oh, and my favorite--
Move very slowly...
So that I feel time is on your side, not mine.
Sorry, big guy,
But your lifetime is a fraction of a second in mine.
- Why? - Why?
Why what?
Why?
Oh, the troubles. Right.
Why not?
Did you ever pull the wings off of a dragonfly
Or...
Set fire to your cat's fur
So you could see what it smells like?
- Setting fires, torturing animals--
You wet the bed too?
- You're less than insects to me.
- You want me to believe you're on some kind of psychotic lark.
But I'm not buying it. You're on a mission.
You need to find that aether that william hid.
- Wow.
Somebody finally clued you in.
- What is it for?
What are the troubles for?
- Like I said...
For fun.
- Well, can I least get a name, rank, and serial number--
Who you are, what you are, where you're from?
No?
That's what I figured.
It's okay, though, 'cause your mission's over.
And there's nothing that you can do about that.
Only question now is, how long do you live?
That revenge that mitchell desires?
The entire guard shares it...
Including me.
- I can cure the troubles.
What? That's what this is about, isn't it?
- How do I know you're not just lying to save your life?
- Fine.
I'll cure one person.
- Trundle or bundle.
- Duke?
- Tongue my herring rubbed.
- You have a trouble.
Did it come on because of me?
Will it go away after I die?
- Tackle the yak track.
- I want you to tell my children the truth
When you can talk again.
My husband, gavin, didn't run off.
After I got fired, we were screwed,
So gavin decided to do one more job.
It was supposed to set us up for years.
But it was with bill dimeo.
It was a stupid risk.
Gavin's dead,
And it's all my fault.
I hope you understand me.
- Rusty livers bust in sour.
- You promised me 24 hours.
- Toggle free powwow dozer.
- What?
- Hardy rob-knob tickle bee.
- It's the new trouble mara gave you.
- [grunts]
- I thought you looked better.
Here's your damn journal.
Listen, duke, I am not crazy.
Audrey is still in there. We got to get her out...
Not for me, for haven.
Mara just wants to destroy us.
So bringing audrey back, that is how we get rid of mara.
What dwight's doing now, treating her like mara--
That just makes her stronger.
You care about audrey, and you care about haven,
So help me.
- Obsess less beetle buds.
- She'll cure me?
- She said she will.
But I'll be honest, I don't trust her yet.
- Well, if she makes me better,
You'll know you can.
And if she kills me,
I was gonna die anyway.
- Hello, boys. Is this a rescue?
- Flip the grip. Foul my latitude.
- Can't understand you, duke.
- Froggy leg cream. Shoe?
- I know why you're risking your life to save me,
But duke--he doesn't do anything for free.
He wants a repeat of colorado.
Hasn't he told you about that steamy night
That audrey and duke spent there?
- Symphony turn tunnel.
- [laughs] oh, it was so good.
- Bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny rabbit.
- "delicious taco."
- Tickle my pickle.
- Damn it, nathan.
- Dwight...
Audrey is still in there. Audrey can help us.
Stop treating her like mara. You're making a big mistake.
Lock them both up.
- Dwight.
- Don't let the light in. - What are you doing?
- I gave this trouble
To your great-great-great--
Whatever grandmama.
I think I know what I'm doing.
There we are.
You won't need these anymore.
- No! No!
- Jody?
- It worked!
She cured me. - For real?
- For real.
I shouldn't have been the first.
I killed my sister.
- Go to your kids.
They're what matter now, okay?
- Deb will give you a lift into town.
- Come on.
- Call ahead.
Make sure her kids are there when she gets home, okay?
- Hey.
You got any bars?
- Nope.
- [sighs]
- I don't know if I even care, but did you sleep with audrey?
- Slip the drink in the pink.
- Dead birds...
Seen that before. Is that you?
- I've got 12 guardsmen on site.
You'll cure them all.
- Starting with you?
- I go last, after everyone in haven.
- Oh, that's so noble, I could puke.
But, no.
It's time for quid pro quo.
- You've got some nerve. No way.
- Let's see how well you've read
That interrogation manual.
- I didn't just read a manual. I lived it.
- Right. Yes.
No, interrogations are designed to elicit information,
Just like torture.
But you don't need intel.
You need cooperation,
Which requires...
Starts with an "n."
- Negotiation.
- A-plus.
- And let me guess-- you'll offer more cures
As long as I help you find your aether.
- It's a win-win.
- Not a chance.
See, you've got a clear choice.
On the one hand, you can help us,
Finally do some good.
- You think the troubles aren't good?
You have no idea about anything.
- Or you can rot in my custody
With no guarantee of your personal safety.
[door opens]
I said no interruptions. - We got a problem.
- [laughs]
- There's nothing about birds,
But your grandfather took care of this gibberish trouble
Back in '54.
Andrew scoville was haven's harbor pilot who stuttered,
Caused a ship called the princess to wreck.
- Tough muffin full of spite.
- Bunch of people died.
His guilt sparked this nonsense trouble that you have.
The monkeys happened because you were in denial.
You dealt with that, stopped them.
Mara let this trouble out in you,
But wouldn't it need to attach itself to some emotion?
- Zig the zither to zag.
- I mean, we're all feeling
All sorts of things at the same time, right?
Whether we're...
- Serengeti peacocks or lonely worms.
- So you dealt with the denial over jennifer's death,
But maybe you're still feeling...
- Guilty.
There wasn't time before.
I mean, I accepted that she was gone.
I still felt responsible.
- It did attach to your guilt.
How'd you stop it?
- I just thought about all the ways
I tried to protect her...
How I tried to stop her from going in the cave.
I mean, what else could I do-- lock her up?
- No. It was her decision.
- [sighs]
Just for the record,
I don't feel guilty about anything else.
Nothing happened in colorado.
- It's hard as rock. - Yeah, it's not just the birds.
Look at that barrel over there. It's boiling.
Hey, hey, look at that rake.
That's got to be a trouble.
- Whoa, whoa. Watch it. - What the hell, man?
- [screaming]
I can't see!
- Okay. Um...
When mara let out that gibberish trouble,
She said it wasn't my fault.
Maybe it wasn't mara.
It was audrey.
- She told you what the trouble was about ahead of time.
You see?
I told you, she is still in there.
- You're not as crazy as I thought you were.
- We need to get dwight to stop treating her like mara.
- Dwight's not crazy either.
- Audrey is better for haven.
- Audrey can't cure the troubles.
- So what?
We just gonna sit around while dwight buries her for good?
- No.
Sitting here is not an option.
- I'm getting tired of this, you two.
I cuffed you in front as a favor.
- And we appreciate that.
- You can talk. - Shame, huh?
- Okay, you need to stop doing this other stuff you're doing.
Killing birds, blinding people?
- Hey, the birds fell when he was still talking nonsense.
- I may have a bunch of troubles inside of me,
But they only come out one at a time.
- Mara told you that?
- No, it's how it's worked so far.
- Easy enough theory to test.
We drive you out to old route 6,
Weird stuff stops happening, we'll know it was you.
Meantime, I got to talk to mara.
- Hey, dwight, look, I don't care
What you do with us, but audrey--
- Audrey!
You're like a broken record, nathan.
- You need to stop talking to mara.
You need to treat her like audrey.
- The only thing that matters is curing the troubles.
How do you not get that?
Lock them up tight. - Okay, wait, wait, just--
Will you listen for one more second?
Dwight, I am telling you, I'm not doing this,
Which means it is one of your guys.
Now, nathan and I are your best option
For figuring out who this is.
- I need assurances.
- If nathan tries anything with mara, I'll shoot him...
In the foot.
You won't feel it anyways.
- I am not doing-- - you're in no position, nathan.
- What the hell is going on?
- Can we please just focus on the problem at hand?
Listen, nathan will not try to steal mara.
Dwight will not talk to mara.
And we all work together to figure out what is happening
So no one gets dead.
Deal?
- Yeah.
- Well, at least I know there's no "e" in "grammar."
- At least I'm not the one
Who printed the worst dangling participle
In the history of our newspaper!
- Of what is it you are speaking?
- "the boy collided with a telephone pole
Running down the street."
- No one's gonna think a telephone pole
Was running down the street.
- In haven, they might. - [scoffs]
- Oh, thank god strunk and white don't read the herald.
- Strunk and white can funk my wagnalls.
- Boys!
Over the decades in this troubled town,
The two of you have referred to me
Many a broken relationship.
- You're the best, maddie.
- They don't call you "the iron maiden" for nothing.
- Unfortunately, the two of you
Are only now coming to see me yourselves.
We have oodles to unpack.
For vincent, I sense enough anal retention
To turn coal to diamonds.
And david's oral regression
Suggests a fixation for large breasts.
Am I wrong?
But that's not why we're really here, now, is it?
You two have a more immediate problem to solve.
- Involving violence and time lost in a cave.
- A cave? Fascinating.
- Maddie, please, we need to know
What happened there.
- Our very lives may depend on it.
- All right.
But as our current approach
Has only resulted in bickering,
We'll need a one-on-one technique
To bore into your psyche and extract your repressed memories.
David, you're gonna go first. Vincent, go take a walk.
I'll call you when it's your turn.
- So, if you see anything unusual,
Let us know right away. Thanks.
- These guys sure do know a lot about their troubles.
- Yeah. And none of them can blind a guy
Or curl metal or turn birds to stone.
- Who's left? - Just this kid rhett.
You know him?
- Hey, rhett.
- Relax.
We just want to talk.
- You think it's me.
- Well, it's a distinct possibility.
What's your trouble?
- I don't have one.
- If you didn't think you had a trouble,
Why'd you join the guard? - To meet chicks.
- Guys have done stranger things to get laid.
- [groans loudly]
I told you it wasn't me. Stop it!
- We're not doing anything.
- What's happening to me?
[groans]
- He's dead.
- You sure this isn't you?
- Your thoughts become fuzzy.
Your eyes want to blink more slowly.
How nice it would be to close them,
But not yet.
Repeat after me.
"I want to remember..."
- I want to remember....
- "what happened in the cave."
- What happened in the cave.
- Allow your arms and your legs to rest.
Now, david, close your eyes.
- You didn't vent just one curse from me, did you?
- Oh? What exactly did I do?
- I think that you set off a whole bunch
Of mutating curses in me all at once,
And they are killing people.
- That sounds really devious.
- So now you...
Are gonna fix me.
- Poor kid.
- White eyes, curling metal...
[explosion]
- What the hell, man?
- What the hell is going on?
- Whatever made the water boil
Must have heated up the gas until...
And the birds...
You couldn't tell because of the feathers,
But they were cooked.
I think I know why.
No signal.
Listen, did you get a hold of anybody about jody's kids?
Yeah, I got a text before the signal disappeared.
- The signal disappeared?
- Yeah, it was good when we got here,
But then it went out. - When jody was cured.
Okay, listen up, everybody.
Get inside a vehicle, close your doors.
Now! Move it! Move it!
- Let's go! Move!
- Get in a car or a truck.
- G.I. Joe...
Smarter than the average bear.
- You're killing plants now too?
- Why not, when you're figuring it out,
You get in the car with your buddies?
- If it's me...
Oh, I see. It's not me.
- It all makes sense...
Microwaves.
Someone has a trouble that sends out microwaves.
- And water boils, gas explodes,
Over-nuked chicken turns rock-hard.
- Your eyes are like egg whites. Heat them up, they turn white.
- Rhett got cooked.
And we're in cars because--
It's a giant glass and metal box,
Like the metal box around your microwave at home.
It stops you from getting cooked.
- So it's all one trouble.
The question is, who's doing it?
- I don't know.
But I got a bad feeling.
- You didn't cure jody.
You just changed her trouble.
She's still shooting these beams of light.
They're just invisible now, right?
- Yes, I altered her curse.
- How?
Oh, let me guess.
You must have found the stash of your black goo.
- No, I-I lifted it off of nathan a while back.
He has no idea I have it.
And sasquatch--
He didn't see me use it.
- [scoffs]
- From visible light to microwave.
Microwaves are everywhere.
Every cell phone communicates via microwave.
- And every satellite overhead.
We're bathed in microwaves.
- Weak ones.
But now jody--
She is soaking them all in
And concentrating them into killer beams.
Now, tell me that wasn't genius.
- Okay, so this is a microwave trouble.
But what, you're suggesting we went from light to microwaves?
- The lights you see and the microwaves that cook--
They're both photons, just different wavelengths.
- So that means jody didn't get far.
She must be around here somewhere.
- It's jody. I'm going after her.
- Use your truck as a shield, or microwaves will kill you.
- Jody! - Duke!
Deb crashed.
She's dead.
I think I broke my leg.
What's going on? Why aren't you helping me?
- Jody, listen to me.
Mara didn't cure you.
She just made your trouble invisible.
- You mean I killed deb?
- No, mara did.
I thought your trouble started when gavin left,
But I was wrong.
It started because you think gavin's death is your fault.
- It is.
He died because of me
- No.
Did you force gavin to take a job with an idiot like bill?
- I should have forced him not to go.
- Jody...
Do you really think you could've stopped him?
It was gavin's decision to make.
- David. David!
You can wake up now.
- What happened?
- You fell asleep, and you snored like a tractor.
Despite my best efforts, the therapy was not successful.
Perhaps we'll have more luck with your brother.
- Should I give him a call?
- No, no. I'll--I'll do it.
Oh, and, david? - Yeah?
- That thing on your leg--
You might want to have that looked at.
- Yeah.
[door bells jingle]
[door closes] [cell phone beeps]
[line trilling]
- Hello?
- Vincent, get over here right now.
I-I-I need to talk to you.
You will not bel-- [ghostly screaming]
[shrieks] - maddie? Maddie!
- All clear.
- Hey.
Hey!
You said you wouldn't talk to her as mara.
- Until the trouble was over. It's over.
- A trouble she manipulated
While you thought she was curing it.
Mara will not help us.
- Okay, listen, everything that's happened here today,
It's on me,
But she's still our best bet at ending the troubles.
I just have to find the right leverage.
- Hey, dwig--
- I hope he flays her like a frog.
- Two people lost their lives.
- I wanted jody to kill you...
You, your men,
And that intolerable nathan wuornos.
- Her beams could have killed you.
- Her beams are narrow.
If you feel the heat, just move a bit.
But the microwaves-- those were inspired.
Even in their failure, they were fun.
- Nothing about you is fun.
- Believe what you want about my mission, dwight,
But the troubles--
They're incredibly entertaining.
I mean, come on.
Oh, but the one I wish I could have seen
Was the look on your daughter's face
When she died.
Were the bullets confused
When they chose which one of you to kill,
Or did they just spatter right into her little body?
- Shut your mouth!
- Make me, dwight.
I want to feel your hand on my throat.
Cut me open with a knife.
Think of everything that I've done.
Think of your daughter and hurt me!
- You're sick. - No.
Just smart.
You are weak,
With too many scruples
And no other option but me.
- I see why nathan wants audrey back.
I remember that day you went in the barn.
I'd never seen a woman so brave.
You're a real hero.
- Good-bye, dwight.
Sorry about the mess. - I got it.
A hero to troubled people.
- I'm sorry about the mess.
- What?
- Oh, dwight.
Help me.
- She called my bluff.
As long as she's got a cure to the troubles,
Mara knows I'll never hurt her.
Even less likely now, 'cause I, uh...
Saw audrey...
Just for a second.
- You see?
We have to help her.
- Nathan, I've always been a fan of you and audrey,
But mara is the only one that can possibly cure the troubles.
Audrey never could.
- But what if she can now?
I know it might sound crazy,
But if mara has all of audrey's memories,
Maybe when audrey turned back into mara,
Maybe she got all of mara's memories too.
When audrey came out,
She said that it wasn't my fault.
She knew that the scoville curse was about guilt.
- Even though that was 1954 and audrey wasn't there.
- We have to turn mara back into audrey.
- The barn has always controlled her personality,
Making sure that she pretty much didn't know anything.
- So you think now that it's gone,
Mara's full knowledge is downloaded into audrey?
- It's a glitch.
But if we can keep audrey here for a few more minutes,
Then maybe--
- She'll do what mara refuses to do.
- Cure the troubles.
That's what she's always wanted.
- What happened? Are you all right?
- Oh, I'm fine, vince.
And what happened is that you and your brother
Are incredibly late.
- Late for...? - For counseling.
Where have you been, and where's dave?
- We already had our session, maddie,
And then you did solo work with dave.
- That is absurd.
- You just called me five minutes ago
Terrified by something.
Do you not remember?
- It says here that we spoke for almost a minute.
I don't remember that. I don't remember the session.
- Sorry I'm late.
Guess I lost track of the time.
Shall we start? - You too?
- What?
- You didn't lose track of time, dave.
You lost time.
- [scoffs] - your brother says
That we had our session and that we've forgotten it.
- Vince-- always the practical joker.
- We were trying to access that missing time, da--
Wait a minute.
You two must have uncovered something in your one-on-one,
Something someone doesn't want us to know about.
- But who can steal time like that?
- Something very powerful.
- Maddie, your pad-- you made notes.
- Well, I'll be.
We spoke.
And then I induced hypnotherapy in david,
And then I stopped writing.
- There's something on the next page.
- "croatoan"?
- Croatoan?
- Is that even a word?
- I told her that audrey was a hero for troubled people.
- You treated her like audrey, and audrey came out.
I didn't think that would work for you.
- Why not?
- Because it didn't work for vickie.
Vickie actually thought she was audrey,
But no audrey came out.
I thought she just came out for me
'cause she loves me.
And then when she came out for you, I was fine with that.
- So that's why you were jealous.
Wait. Does that mean that you...?
- No. No, there's already too many people there.
I don't know why she came out for me and not for vickie.
You were talking about the troubles.
- Three things audrey loves...
Me, you...
Helping people with troubles.
That's how we do it.
- So we throw everything we got at her.
- Hey, parker.
- How's it going, audrey?
- I never had a chance to tell you
About my daughter, detective.
- What's going on?
- Remember when we first looked
At my grandfather's journal together?
- I remember that first night we spent together.
I don't know why I waited so long.
- I was terrified lizzie got my trouble.
She was only nine. - Body like gazelle...
And face like a pooch.
- She loved to sing songs about cats.
- When I first learned about the crocker family curse,
You were there for me, audrey.
- And vince almost caught us.
- Sleeping with you was like getting violated by a baboon.
- I wouldn't trade that night for my whole life.
- [laughs]
- The bullets went straight to her.
I just wanted so bad for them to kill me.
- I wish they would have killed you too.
I knew it had to be you, not lexie.
I know you that well.
- He knew before you.
What does that say about you?
- I was a mess, 'cause I thought I'd lost you.
- You have lost her. I'm mara.
- But now I know I haven't.
Audrey's back.
- Right. - She doesn't need the chains.
- Of course. Sorry, detective.
- I'm gonna slit your throats.
- Let's go back to the gull. I'll buy you a drink.
- That sounds great-- beer with old friends.
- We're here for you, audrey.
- Parker, I know you can hear me.
- I'm sorry. Did I name change?
It's mara.
- We need you. - We love you.
- Go to hell!
Don't touch me.
Don't touch me! - Parker...
I love you.
I love you.
- [breathing heavily]
Nathan, I love you too.
It's me. - Hey.
- It's me. - Hey.
- Can you maybe stick around for a while this time?
- I don't think that I can.
Mara just found out that I'm here.
I can feel her.
It's like she's dragging me to the bottom of the ocean.
- We're not gonna let you drown.
- I don't think I have that much time.
- So we have to work fast.
You know everything mara knows, right?
No. I-I can't seem to remember before the cave.
- How did you know about the scoville curse, then?
- Because mara was thinking about it right at that moment.
I have only access to what she's thinking now.
I-I don't know any of her memories.
- So you can't cure the troubles?
- No, dwight, I don't think I can.
- But mara can, right?
- No, she's been lying to you.
She can't take the troubles out of people.
She can only put them in.
- No cure.
- Nathan, please. - I'm right here.
- Nathan. Nathan. - Stay here.
Stay with me. - Please.
- Look at me. - Please.
Damn all of you!
- Mara.
- So audrey was rattling around inside of me.
Thank you for letting me know.
I'm going to kill that bitch right now.
