Good Bones (2016–…): Season 2, Episode 7 - Facelift for a Tiny Victorian - full transcript

Mina and Karen give a full facelift to a rundown Victorian-style home with a funky layout in the Fountain Square community of Indianapolis.

I'm Mina,
and this is my mom, Karen.

There we go.

And we're renovating Indianapolis

one house at a time.

Every rotten, nasty house
that we see...

There's literally
poop on the ground.

...we try and buy.

Then with a little vision... And a lot of hard work...

...we create beautiful homes
for our neighbors.

Wow.

This is our neighborhood,

and we want to see it
be the best it can be.

Oh, my God.
Look how pretty!

Every tragic house...

Oh, here it goes.
Oh!

...deserves a second chance.

Because underneath
all that mess,

you might find some
really good bones.

Aah!

Today, Mina and I are

at the north end
of Eagle Creek Reservoir,

and we're gonna go
creek-stomping with the dogs.

Which is exactly
what it sounds like.

You stomp in a creek.
- Yep.

Oh, no, no. Just wait.
Mom's opening it.

Okay.
- I like your enthusiasm.

Good job.

I'm excited
that we're trying

a new creek-stomping venue.

Are those your
creek-stomping shoes?

I'm not getting in the creek
with you, crazy lady.

Sometimes you just
need a break.

You just need to have
some dogs romping around,

a little babbling brook,

the sun coming
through the trees.

Just let the magic seep in
for a little while.

Just let
everything else go.

Oh, I see a spot.
Come here, Ted.

She's laughing at me
right now, isn't she?

If you want a laugh,

Ted looks like a drunk cow
running around.

It's hilarious.

Because
he's just a puppy.

Good boy!
Good job!

Can you get those
back legs over?

You got it?

All right. Girls, Ted,
this has been fun,

but time to go look
at another house.

- Come here, buddy.
- Follow grandma!

Aah!

Ted is just ridiculous.

So we're heading
over to Woodlawn.

This house
we're going to today

is just east of state,
adjacent to Fountain Square.

So it's kind of like
the frontier right now.

This is one
of the smallest houses

we've done
in this neighborhood.

It costs around $40,000

and it's just under
1,800 square feet

and it's 2-bedroom,
1-bathroom house

and it has
a really funky layout.

Right now, the front door

leads right
into the first bedroom,

and the other bedroom
is jutting off the living room

with
a super small bathroom

tucked all the way in the back
corner behind the kitchen.

Haven't seen inside yet,

but what we're buying
is the location.

Yeah.

And the house
isn't falling over,

so it can't be that bad.

- But we'll see.
- Mm-hmm.

That's a cute
little house.

It is.
I love the outside.

If you look past
the peeling paint

and the sagging roof and...

It's a really cute house
that's just had a bad sunburn

and is crying a little bit
about it...

- Peeling.
- ...and peeling off.

That's good. Yeah.
And you know what?

I like the scale
of this house.

It's not
really Victorian.

It's got...
- It's like munchkin Victorian.

It's like a little
baby Victorian charm...

I think we're the only
people in the world

who would look at this house
and go, "Oh, it's cute."

It just needs a face-lift.

- What's in the way?
- I think it's just the carpet.

Oh. Yeah?

Oh, wow.

Ay-ay-ay.

Come in.

I really thought it was
gonna be pretty empty,

and there's
a lot of trash.

My scalp's itching

just thinking about the bugs
in that mattress.

- Yeah.
- Mm.

All right.
So just a front room.

Let's move
towards the back.

So we've got a little
itty-bitty house.

What do you think
is over here?

I don't know.
Be careful.

I think you're doing
that the hard way.

- Why?
- Why? Because I think...

Because I think,
if you had just done this,

you could've
walked around.

So, bedroom.

This isn't bad.
It's just small.

Small.

Do you see these chairs?

We could reupholster these.

No, no, no.

You already have two heinous
chairs in our storage bin

that you were gonna
reupholster, that you didn't.

You get no more
heinous chairs

until those ones
are reupholstered.

There's, like, six chairs
in a storage unit

we have that she got
from garage sales

or houses that she was
gonna upholster

and they're gonna be great.

Guess how many
are upholstered?

Big fat goose egg.
- Two chairs.

No, no, no.
No, no, no.

She can have her version
of the truth.

I'm not gonna argue with her.
- Those are the facts.

I've got to go through this
with a fine-tooth comb.

There's all kinds of stuff.
- No, you don't.

You have to put it
all in the trash.

I would put this on you,
but you would scream.

- I would kill you.
- Yeah, but, I mean...

Don't. Why?
Why would you do that?

There's literally
poop on the ground,

and that was just
on the ground.

It was over there.
It wasn't in the poop.

- You picked it up.
- It wasn't in the poop.

Oh, I can't handle you.

It's not a bad
size little kitchen.

No. Not bad.

- Just a little...
- Porch?

...closed-in porch,
mudroom, whatever.

- Trash bin?
- Trash bin apparently.

This is the bathroom.
- Half bath?

- Full bath.
- Full bath?

Yeah, there's
a little shower...

- Oh, nice.
- ...plumbing for a vanity,

but they just don't have it
in there anymore.

So this is really
not functional.

- Oh.
- We can go. We can go.

Oh, you know what?

We can't even get
into the basement.

I don't even know.

There's the access,
right there.

With all the trash on top.

Yeah.

I don't want
to touch them.

Where's our crawl access?

Um...

Let's see if
there's one outside.

Yeah. There isn't
one back here.

I don't think we're
gonna find it

until we get demo
done, honestly.

I feel like, even as is,

we could make it
a 2-bedroom, 1-1/2 bath.

- It's just gonna be small.
- It's gonna be small.

Our other option
is going up,

or going off the back
and up... Up.

...depending on how
the foundation looks.

Let's go look out back
and see...

- Okay.
- ...how much space we have.

Mom!
Are you kidding me?

- Mom!
- What?

There's a crawl access
right there.

- Where?
- Well, not a luxurious one.

- Well, I couldn't see it.
- Just shimmy on in there, lady.

We didn't find an interior
access to the crawl space,

but we found
an exterior one

that probably should've
had a window in it.

A little bit of mold.
Not bad.

I could see that
it's our typical

Fountain Square crawl space.

Missing some steel plate.
Jankity brick work.

It's standard
operating procedure.

This is probably
about 14 feet off

the back of the house.

Add this much
and a 2-story addition.

- Okay.
- I've got it!

- You got it?
- I got it.

- I knew you would.
- It's all up here.

I think we do a nice
big addition on the back,

and make it more
of a family house.

And what would be
great about

a 2-story addition
on the back is,

the front is going
to retain its charm.

Yeah, it's not going
to look different

from the street really.
- No, it won't look different.

So you get all this
extra living space.

It'll be surprising.

But we've got a lot
of work to do first.

We've got a sagging porch,

there's a ton of trash
to remove on the inside,

a completely
worthless bathroom

and we'll need to build
on an addition

to give us some
more square footage.

I think it can be
really charming, though.

I'm feeling a design theme
coming on here.

Nothing in that color,

shape or material
is entering this house.

So we bought this house
for just under $40,000.

We want to do the addition
on the back for $160,000.

That's $200,000 all-in.
- Okay.

And we could sell it
for a minimum $230,000.

$30,000 is okay.

$30,000 profit
would be okay.

And if we can
get the city

to knock off a bunch
of city fines due on it...

Are you paying attention?
- I am. I am.

- You don't look like you are.
- We need a whole new roof.

Oh, well, yeah.
So I'm gonna do my job.

I'm gonna make the plan.
- Okay.

You're gonna do your job.
- Okay.

- Talk to the city.
- Yeah.

Get them to knock
off the fees. All right.

I'm sweating already.

We are starting
at 6:00 a.m.

to avoid the peak
of the heat today

because this is
the hottest September

we've had
in a long time.

Why don't we just
push it back a month?

Because, in a month,

there will be
a foot of snow in Indiana.

- Good morning.
- Good morning.

- What time is it?
- It's 5:59.

We're on time.
They beat us.

- They beat us here. Good job.
- We're good.

There's tons
of trash in the house.

We're gonna have
a second Dumpster

rolling in pretty quickly.

And then this one's
down to the studs.

Inside, outside,
everything coming off.

Stay hydrated.
Let's get to work.

All right.
Let's go demo, guys.

Oh! There's so
much stuff in here.

Anything you think
I might want,

bring out to the truck.

Oh, people must be
running around naked.

They just left
all their clothes.

Oh!
Let's open some windows.

All of the trash smells
like human pee.

But we do have some
ventilation in the room now.

And there's just
lots of stuff.

And Mina was just gonna
throw it all in a Dumpster.

And I'm gonna want
to touch each piece.

That's what's gonna happen.

Let's just flash back about
15 seconds to when I said,

"It all smells like
it's covered in human pee."

Ooh, Mina. Look.

Those are
some fancy boots.

Look how pretty
this pink velvet is.

I think that might be
worth saving.

Ew, bed bug killer.
Uh-oh.

There were several bottles
of bed bug killer. Several.

Yeah. So, yeah, let's keep
all the fabrics in the house.

Such a good idea.

You guys obviously don't
understand treasure yet.

Oh, I'm starting
to feel the heat.

It took hours to get
all that trash out because...

And the temperature
was just rising and rising,

and it was
just cooking things.

It was kind of like
trash stew.

Oh, my God.
Who gets the toilet duty?

That's terrible.

We have really fun jobs.

That is beyond my job.

Our fearless leader, Lenny,

doesn't want to
touch the toilet.

- I'm not touching the toilet.
- Yep. Yep.

So that leaves
one of you three.

- My toilet!
- You want the toilet?

Yeah. I've never
ripped out a toilet before.

Somebody died in there.

It's in there
pretty good.

- Yeah!
- Oh!

- That's awful.
- Oh!

How do you just
put your face right...

You're just mind over matter.

I like, every now and then,
to step in

and do something
nobody else wants to do

just to make them
all respect me a little bit.

Do you think
that's what happens?

I'm out of here.
I'm done.

Oh, God.

I don't think
they felt bad at all.

I think they were like,
"Thank God Karen's crazy

and likes
to play with toilets."

I think that's more
what happened.

You're better than I,
that's for sure.

You know what it is?
Once you have a baby,

stuff like that
doesn't bother you.

Oh.

That's why you still
have to do what I say.

Yeah. Yeah.
That's true.

Boss lady showing me
how it's done.

All right. I'm gonna
get back to work.

Come on, guys.
Get moving!

One, two, three.

Yes!

We've got a couple walls
that need to come down.

We've got siding
that needs to come down.

We've got a whole lot of dirt
that needs to get moved,

and some fence that needs
to get pulled out.

All right. So I've got
to get this fence out.

Tear some stuff up.

- Am I ready?
- You're ready.

You've got to get underneath it
all the way with the bucket.

You just snatch it up
out of the air.

- Leonard!
- Yay!

Whoo!
All right!

That was a good one!

So that porch probably
needs to be rebuilt,

and I feel like it'd be easy
just to snatch it

and take it off, for Lenny.

Are you gonna let
your mom try it?

I don't know.
I don't feel awesome about that.

Mom is very meticulous
with the excavator.

Lenny is very precise
with speed.

When she's done playing,
I would like you to...

I'm gonna go do some demo.

Now it's porch post time?

Are you pulling it off,
or is she?

I don't know.
If she's doing it,

I can go to the back
of the house,

moving everything
we don't want broken.

If you can get up here
and grab it...

- And pull?
- ...and pull to you.

- Okay.
- But you can't jerk.

We don't want to pull
the wall of the house.

- Where's Mina?
- She's gonna do it.

Mina!
Let's see what Mina thinks.

I suggested that Lenny
take the porch roof off.

Everybody inside
ready for this?

I thought
we decided on Lenny.

And when I came out,
she was just doing it,

which is not what I thought
we had landed on,

but whatever.

So I wanted to go slowly
so that things

would just come down slowly
and nothing would get damaged.

- Oh, geez.
- Get it out away from the house.

Don't let go.
- Don't let go!

- What?
- Don't let go!

Watch it!

- Don't let go!
- Don't let go!

- What?
- Don't let go!

Nice job.

I took down that
front porch like a pro.

I'm a little jazzed!
I'm a little jazzed!

Nice operating.

It took a few days,
but we finally got

all the siding off the exterior
of the little Woodlawn house.

We stripped the inside
down to the studs.

And, today, the plan is
to knock down the chimney,

which is
in pretty bad shape.

- It's about that time?
- Yep. It's chimney time.

So we've never helped Tad
take down a chimney before.

He's always done it
on his own,

and it usually results
in some sort of catastrophe.

So we're
on the scene today.

So if we pushed over
the top part,

I think
it wouldn't weigh enough

to break
through the floors.

I say we get it down
below the joist,

and then you can break it
the rest of the way.

Okay.

Of course, Tad just wants
to bust the whole thing out.

I'm like, "No,
that's a bad idea.

It's too heavy. It's gonna
break the floor joist."

You want me to climb up there
and throw bricks down?

- Yeah.
- Well, I say,

"Well, let me go up
and climb up to the top.

Let's get
the top 3 feet down

so it's under
the roof rafters, whatever."

Ceiling joists is,
I think, what you...

- Yes.
- ...were going for. Yeah.

And then, maybe,
it will work.

This is the safe way
to take down a chimney.

100%
no fun for me, though.

I want it one more row down,

so it's actually
belows the joists.

There we go.
Look at it just coming down.

We got it below,
and Tad suggests I kick it.

Yeah, push it
on the outside.

Get a good shake
going on it.

There we go.
There we go.

I mean, it's shaking
the whole house, you guys.

I feel like it's a bad idea.
- Keep it going. Keep it going.

It's gonna break
the floor, you guys.

Oh, I can see
the whole thing shaking.

Yeah, I know. It just
wants to be pushed over.

Keep it going.

Tad and I are totally
irresistible peer pressure.

You knew better.
You knew better.

- I knew we shouldn't do it.
- She knew we shouldn't do it.

Come on. You almost
have it every time.

Go! Go!

Oh, here it goes!
Oh!

Oh, did you see all those
floor joists snap, geniuses?

I saw them move!
I didn't see...

- Because I did!
- ...anything snap!

- God bless it.
- I didn't see anything snap.

I don't know why I don't
listen to my good sense

instead of you two.

Y'all are telling
Lenny about this.

- You did it.
- Y'all are telling Lenny.

- You did it.
- You did it.

You pushed
the chimney over.

But against
my better judgment.

How does that
make it okay?

- Oh, geez.
- She's leaving now.

She better run.

Now that demo
is behind us,

we have a clear view
of what we're working with,

and we can get
our floor plans finalized.

Hey, hey.
- Hey.

- I got Woodlawn floor plans.
- All right.

I'm gonna check them out.
You got your mind there?

You at Woodlawn?
- Yep.

So pretty much everything

from this wall of the house
back is new addition.

So don't look at this.
- Okay. I'm not looking.

- Hold on. Give me...
- I'm not looking.

...your phone.
None of this exists. Okay.

So this is the existing
footprint of the house.

- Okay.
- You're gonna come
onto the porch.

When you walk
in the front door,

you'll be
in the dining room.

If you turn to the right,
you're in the living room.

The first-floor room,
they were using as the bedroom.

We're gonna keep
the bedroom.

What's gonna change
is the space

where the kitchen was,
the bathroom

and the laundry room.

It now all becomes this big,
open kitchen space.

Okay.

And where's
the bathroom, you ask?

This is all addition.

So the whole addition
on the first floor

is a giant master bedroom,

master en suite,
big bathroom.

I want to do a soaking tub
and a shower.

And then where the old exterior
of the house was,

pretty much is where
the new staircase is gonna go.

So this is an open staircase
with open work railings...

Yeah.
...so that light
can move through it?

Yeah. This whole space
with the kitchen,

staircase and hallway,

I want it to feel
like one space.

So the new staircase
takes you

to the second floor
of the addition

that has the other two bedrooms
and a full bathroom.

So we end up
with a 4-bedroom,

3-bath house.

- Okay, great.
- Awesome.

I will get these
to Lenny and...

I'm gonna go back
to pondering.

...we'll start framing.
You go back to pondering.

- What up?
- What's up?

We've got a couple issues.

- Shocker.
- What? No.

No, no, no. Come back
with a different word.

Well, the issue
is your roofline

is not gonna look like this.
- What you talking about?

Basically, from right here,
this roof, you're not saving.

No. I don't want to
reroof the whole house

because it costs money.

We're not gonna be
able to save that.

We've got a couple issues.
Basically, from right here,

this roof,
you're not saving.

This roofline
is coming off

and then we've got to tie
in to this mess here.

No. I don't want to
reroof the whole house

because it costs money.

Oh, you ain't getting by that.
Look at the framing.

I just want to add
a second story back there.

These roofs can all
stay the same.

No, because
you're adding...

- We're coming up to here.
- ...square footage here.

So just take that roof
and carry that roofline down.

You see how steep
that roof is?

This roof right here

would run
right into your house.

We're not gonna be
able to save that.

Well, that's stupid.

What Lenny is saying is,

because we're adding square
footage to the main level,

the existing roof
isn't wide enough

to cover
the new square footage.

So we're getting
a whole new roof?

Yeah, we could put
a pretty color on it.

She's done with us.

All right.

So it took a lot of words
and pointing and talking,

which means we're just getting
a whole new roof, apparently.

All right.
Let's get marking.

All right.

Can you get this, please,
so I can do my part of the job?

We're building
a 2-story addition

on the back of our house
on Woodlawn.

So the first step
is to dig the footers

to build the addition.
- It's an outline.

So it's an outline
for the foundation.

We pour concrete
into them,

and then the second step
is to lay the block,

and that's what the framing
for the addition

will be built on top of.

Then we'll demo the back
portion of the house

to make way
for the new 2-story add-on.

One more cut.

Knock her down,
and get it out of the way.

Then there's
just one wall left,

and I get to do the honors.

Aah!

That was nice!

Now that the back
of this little Woodlawn house

is totally gone,

we can focus on getting
the new 2-story addition built.

And it won't be
so little anymore.

- Hey, there.
- Hello.

- You look hard at work.
- I am.

I was waiting for you, though.

So time to take a break.

I just took
my own sweet time.

I know.
So I've got some options...

- Oh.
- ...for the Woodlawn house.

Trim, siding, accent.

- Yeah.
- This is gonna be good.

This is my favorite tile.

This has got enough
curve that it

doesn't feel too masculine.
- Mm-hmm.

But it's got
enough straight lines

that it doesn't
feel too feminine.

This is good.
- I like it.

We're gonna go
with the creamy color cabinet,

60 inches.
- Okay.

And then I brought this

because the master
has a soaking tub

and the big walk-in shower.
- So that'll be the floor.

So I think doing this
for the floor

of the walk-in shower
and this for the wall.

- Yeah, that'll work perfectly.
- It will look super impressive.

Yeah.

The staircase, 100%,
is gonna be a focal point.

Yeah.

So I think
getting that railing right

when we get to the point
is gonna be crucial...

Yeah....because,
in my head, already,

I want it metal
but I want it white.

- I like all this.
- Mm-hmm.

What are we gonna do
for interior walls?

What are we thinking?

I think interior
is somewhere in this range...

- Yeah.
- ...just much lighter.

And I found some
really fun knobs

that I'll have to show you
when they come

because they're really,
really pretty.

They're ceramic and they've
got an eye in the middle,

but they're all different.
They look hand-painted.

- Oh, so a little...
- Different patterns of gray.

- ...bohemian.
- A little bit.

With that being said, I am
going to tell you to go home,

and I will order tile
and flooring and paint.

- Okay. Get to work.
- Thank you.

- It's a little chilly.
- A little brisk.

But the sun is out and,
more importantly,

we are going to put
in some floor joists

between the first
and the second floor.

- Morning, ladies.
- Morning, Jim.

- Got a lot going on here.
- Time to walk the tightrope.

We're gonna put
our trusses up there

and then pull them across.

All right.
Here. You got it?

I was gonna give you
a shoulder.

She's walking
in the middle of it.

So am I stepping up
on that in the middle?

Yeah, you can walk
right over these

in the middle wall,
so it'll be a lot sturdier.

The guys already have
all the floor joists up there,

and they're laid flat
all next to each other.

Then we flip the outside
one up, nail it down.

Scoot off the next one.

Flip it up.
Nail it.

Flip this one up.

The floor joists could flop
over once you stand it up,

so you can't walk on them
once they're stood up.

Right.

For there is a very large
fall hazard potential.

Yes. So, with all
these fall hazards,

I cannot watch.

Mom's getting vomity.

I can see it in her face.

- Bingo.
- We got a big gap, though.

Is that okay?
- Huh?

We got a big gap.

Ay-ay-ay.

Just right up to it,
snug and tight.

Good thing
you're part monkey.

- Got it.
- Bingo.

We got a big gap, though.
Is that okay?

- Huh?
- We got a big gap.

Ay-ay-ay.

All right, Mina.
I'm gonna have to fix it.

Okay.

- D.J.
- Yeah?

Can you just cut me,
like, two rips?

There's a trick.

He's gonna have
to cut a strip

that fits
in there perfectly.

So there's no gap.

- Is that good?
- Yep.

Jim's the hero.

He solved the problem
that wasn't a problem.

Just in time, Leonard.
- Right!

What are you doing?
What? What? What?

So second-floor joists
are on.

Glad you're here
to take over.

I'm not, but yeah.

We just need
second floor framed,

and then
the trusses can go up.

We're gonna have one nice,

clean roofline
with these trusses,

and it's gonna make
the floor plan work

and make it look better
from the outside.

The whole time
they're doing this,

they're balancing on just
the width of their feet.

That's it. The trusses
are not that heavy.

They're very awkward.

We're also
incredibly strong.

So, for common folk,
they're probably very heavy.

But, for girls
like us...

- Whatever.
- ...nothing.

It's no big deal.

Perfect.

- All right.
- Well, this is awesome.

- It's huge.
- And it looks great.

So winter came like that.

It's 5 degrees
with the wind-chill out.

We had a 55-degree day
2 days ago, 5 degrees today.

It'll probably be 68
in a couple days,

so we'll figure it out.

So now we have to get
the house all snugged up.

The framers are finishing
the floor and ceiling joist,

the roof is being
installed and fixed,

the house is getting
wrapped in OSB

so all the windows
can be installed.

Spray foam is happening,

mechanicals are starting
to go in

and the guys
are fixing the stairs.

So, soon, the trim and siding
will be ready to go.

Nothing like throwing
up some siding.

- What are you wearing?
- Isn't this pretty?

I have
no explanation for it.

I don't really know
what's happening.

I just thought
this would be fun.

It looks like some of that
old wallpaper in these houses.

Exactly. That's exactly
what it looks like.

It's, what,
20 degrees out here?

- Yeah.
- 98.6 in here.

Don't tell me that.
I'll be climbing in there.

You climb on
in here, baby.

- Oh, geez.
- I can make room for you.

I'm going inside now.

Come on, kids!

- It's magical.
- It is.

- Yeah.
- Come on, kids!

The staircase
is super important

because I wanted
to create the illusion

of it being one gigantic space.

But Lenny seems to think
there's a problem.

So, with the inspection
that we had, okay?

So when we made...

These stairs
were not made.

We didn't...
the treads.

So, as of right now,

he wants another step here.
He wants...

- A ledge?
- Yeah.

At the landing,
instead of being a landing,

the inspector wants it wedged
in half so it's two steps.

- Right.
- He wants us to readjust.

I'm not mad about
a wedge, though.

Words, words, words.
I need a wedge.

Words, words, words.
Okay. Good idea.

Wedge. Go for it.

You just wedge away.
Wedge your little heart out.

We don't care.
- Lenny, you got this.

I'm not worried about it.
You've got it.

Drywall's getting
delivered today, right?

In the morning.

That's what
you said yesterday.

He was supposed
to call me back.

You can lead him to water,
but you can't drown him.

You can.

Even though it's still
the middle of winter in Indiana,

things are starting
to move along.

We've got siding going up,

inside drywall is going up

and the flooring is going down.

Once that's done,
we can start putting in trim,

we can get paint
on the walls

and finish cabinets.

- Am I going backwards?
- You want me to go backwards?

You go backwards.

I'm super excited
about these cabinets.

Man, these are darn
near as tall as I am.

That's a beauty.

So, instead of having
to stack twice

the amount of cabinets
you have to install,

we have these awesome
custom single

that look double
height cabinet.

So it just makes it feel
so much bigger.

- Got her?
- Got her.

See? I'm the perfect height.

I just put
my shoulder under it.

This is a nice
little calf workout.

We can pull this leg in.
There we go.

You should be able
to let go now.

No, don't let go.
Don't let go.

Lenny, I won't let go.

Don't let go.

Hang on.

I've got
to change positions.

Hang on.
No, don't let go.

Keep holding it.
Don't let go.

Are you just
messing with me now?

- No, just stay right there.
- Hold it.

- Hang on.
- Hold it.

- You guys are jerks.
- Oh!

It's fine.
This is awesome.

Good-looking cabinets.
Nice pick.

Thank you.

Yep, right there.

You guys are making
some progress on this.

Yes, it's coming
along well.

Lenny, Tad and myself

are rebuilding
the staircase today.

Flush over here.

We have plenty
of old floor joists,

so we're cutting new pieces
of the old floor joists

to be the treads
for the staircase.

Tad's definitely
trying to get out

of his demo boy box
doing the carpentry,

and so Tad's in charge
of measuring and cutting.

Just spot it,
pick it up, take it in.

He's getting the risers cut kind
of that exact perfect width,

and then the tread
is going to be

the old floor joists
that we ripped out.

It's gonna be really,
really cool.

- Are you flush over there?
- It's like a hair.

Just bump it like
I just showed you out there.

Oh, yeah.
I'll bump it.

Tad and I are just
rolling right along.

He's bringing me risers.
I'm screwing them in.

He's bringing me treads.
I'm screwing them in.

Thank you.

Last one.
Don't mess it up.

It looks a little short
on that end.

It's short on both.

Hey, Lenny.
- Yeah?

This riser, is it supposed
to come flush to the...?

Yeah, it should have went
to the walls.

- Oh.
- That was our last piece.

- My heart.
- Oh, man.

- Hey, Lenny.
- Yeah?

This riser,
is it supposed to come...?

It's supposed to go
to the wall.

That was our last piece.

- My heart.
- Oh, man.

I assumed
you were doing it.

You know what happens
when you assume, Lenny?

Lenny wanted everything
butted up with the walls

so there weren't gaps,
which totally makes sense.

Luckily, it was
not a tricky fix.

We had to take
a couple boards off.

- Beautiful.
- We lost 45 minutes,

but it was a learning
opportunity for all.

Yeah, that's cool.
That's gonna look really,

really cool once
the railing gets on.

Good job, team.

Hey.

So I take it
those are the steps?

These are the steps.
I think they're really cool.

Ryan is our friend
at Indie Art Forge

who does amazing metal work.

We need a railing and we want it
to be metal but open.

So the hallway windows
let the light

all the way through
to the kitchen,

so it's as open
as possible.

What about a whitewashed
metal white?

It might go a little bit...
- I didn't know you could that.

- Well, you can do a prime...
- Uh-huh.

...and then sand back
the prime a little bit

so it shows that metal.

It's gonna feel really nice
and bright and open and huge.

Let's pull some measurements
so we can get an idea

of exactly
what kind of footage

we're talking about
to get a price.

Ryan measured the staircase
and he said,

"$75 a linear foot
is base price."

What would you say?
25 feet?

- Yeah.
-$75 a linear foot.

I can't do that math in my head,
but it sounds like bad math.

- Yeah.
-$1,875.

I think the budget mom
and I had hoped for

was between
$1,200 and $1,500.

I might be able to take
care of you a little bit.

You guys are good to me.

I might be able
to be good to you.

I thought I had a reasonable
budget at $1,500.

And, luckily, Ryan's my buddy.

Just get out of here.
- I'll just do it.

I got to go back to work.
- Bye.

So we're in the homestretch
at our house on Woodlawn,

and all the pieces
are falling into place.

On the inside, the walls
are getting painted,

tile is going up
in the bathrooms and kitchen.

Outside, we've got workers
on the front porch,

guys working on the back deck.

Everything is getting painted.

Sod is going down.
The fence is up.

And, today,
mom and I are

installing raised palette
garden beds in the backyard.

Oh, squishy, squishy.

We had these palettes
in our warehouse

for when we get
our tile delivered.

I'll just put it here.

I mean, there's nothing
special about them.

They're actually ugly,

and we probably
should burn them.

But mom had this idea
to make raised palette beds,

so we just painted them.

- We call it upcycling, upcycled.
- Or polishing a turd.

I think those are
probably interchangeable.

Yes.

Upcycling,
polishing turds.

We built these in the warehouse.
We got them here.

We've got them mostly
filled with dirt.

I think we need a little more.
- We need more still?

We've got some more dirt.

They add dimension.
They add height.

They add a little bit
of architectural interest

to the backyard.
- And they add some function.

It's not
the right time of year

to put
living things outside,

but I want our buyers to see
what these can look like.

So my thought is,

we'll just
tuck the pots down in,

and we'll put some of this kale
behind it for color.

So we can make these
look really pretty,

and if it's cold...
- I got it.

You just keep chatting.

It's not heavy at all.

It's not awkward.

You're doing
a good job, Mina.

You're doing
a really good job.

We filled them with upwards
of 20 bags of potting soil

because
they're really big.

Oh, I thought the purple
would go on this row.

Back there?
Well, I thought maybe

we'd kind of go this way.

- Oh, so like a diamond?
- Yeah.

We've got some kale
in there, cilantro, parsley.

- Rosemary.
- Just a lot of yummy stuff.

Oregano.
That's what's going in.

So how do you like it?
- I think it looks good.

I think it gives
a little interest,

a little color
to the backyard.

- Yeah.
- That was super easy,

and it looks cute.

We have just
a few things left

on our punch list
at Woodlawn.

Ryan got the railings
finished and installed.

It's awesome.
- Look at that.

And our furniture is here.

Today is super fun day because...

Super fun day!

Just give it a one, two, three
off the little runner here.

- Okay.
- One, two, three.

Yes.

This is where all

the "not attached to the house"
pretty stuff comes in.

It's what makes the house
feel more like a home,

so people can imagine
themselves in the space.

We have a lot of
industrial elements.

We have some reclaimed wood.
We have a lot of metal.

But we're having so much fun
with this house.

There's some bright colors.
It's just fun.

What does the cow say?

The cow says, "Moo."

- Is this how you want them?
- Not really.

What does that mean?
Say yes or no.

There's only two options
of the direction they go.

Ay.

Here. Let's give them
a little more...

There we go.
Now we're okay.

Today is super exciting because...

- Because it's done.
- Well, yeah.

It's exciting
because it's done,

but it's really pretty.

- You run this block.
- So it's exciting.

We need you to move in
and run the block for us.

So I did get an e-mail
last night

from a Realtor friend
who has a buyer

that's potentially
interested in the house.

So we have the perspective
buyer coming by,

and I think
Stuart and Katie

are going
to absolutely love it.

It looks a little bit different...

- Oh, my gosh.
- ...than it did before...

- It looks awesome.
- ...right?

They're just the cutest little
salt and pepper shaker set.

They're adorable.

It is adorable.
It's so cute.

I like how the porch area
has a little place to sit.

I mean, the front porch
is so inviting.

You're thinking,
"I'm gonna sit on my porch,

and I'm gonna say hello
to my neighbors."Hey, neighbors.

"I'm gonna drink
a little espresso."

But it's just inviting,
and it says,

"Come on up to the porch."

You guys want to see
the inside?

- Let's see it. Yeah.
- Come on.

You guys
can follow Mina.

Oh, my gosh.

Wow.

I think Stuart and Katie,

who are
our potential buyers,

are going to
absolutely love it.

It's so cute.

You guys want
to see the inside?

- Let's see it. Yeah.
- Come on.

You guys
can follow Mina.

Oh, my gosh.

It looks amazing.

This is insane.

- Nice and open.
- Yeah.

So we've got
the dining room up here,

but it's still...
- Oh, wow.

...still part of the house.

It doesn't feel...
- Feel separated.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

But you don't really
walk into the dining room.

You really walk
into the living room.

With the door swing,

this is
the direction you come.

Yeah.

The minute you walk
in the front door,

it's very inviting.

It all feels connected.

I can feel what
they were going for

with the light,
airy openness,

and it really makes
you want to be there.

It has a really nice flow.
It's beautiful.

Awesome.

So we've got a space
down here that,

technically,
could be a fourth bedroom.

It's got a bathroom attached,
but office, den.

Whatever you guys
want to use it for.

- Oh, cool.
- Wow.

Yeah, I like this.

I like how it's still incorporated

into the living room,
yet it can be separate.

- Mm-hmm.
- It's very, very nice.

- Onto the kitchen.
- All right.

Oh, my gosh.

It was a little tricky
over here.

When the kitchen is
in the middle of the house,

you don't have any windows
in the kitchen.

So you can really see,
with the sun coming out,

how much light you get in
through the staircase...

- Yeah, wow.
- ...into the kitchen.

That's awesome.

You guys are so good
with detail.

It's just things that
I would never think of,

but it really makes
a difference.

I found those handles online
and got super excited.

I was like, "Mom,
look what I found!"

- Yeah, no. I love them.
- They're so cute.

They look great.

I really like the tile.
It's kind of different.

I don't know
what I was expecting.

It's like a basket weave
of Carrara marble.

- I like the sink.
- Yes.

Big, deep.

- I mean, it's huge.
- Very cool.

It is huge.
That's nice.

On that note,
we'll go check out

your master bedroom...
- Oh, okay.

- ...right?
- Mina will lead the way.

All right. And this is
your first-floor master.

Wow.

Oh, my gosh.
It's so big.

Got a nice
little sitting area.

It's beautiful.
It's very crisp.

We've got lots of light.

One of the things
we tried to do, because it is--

it's downtown urban living,
you're close to your neighbors,

is the side windows.

We tried to do
the high, skinny ones.

So you still get
some light in...

Without losing your privacy.

...still respecting
your privacy.

Do you guys want to see
the bathroom...

- Yes!
- ...because it's really cool.

Do you want to show us
the bathroom?

I do. I do.
Go this way.

All right.

Go ahead and sneak
a peek in there.

- Wow.
- Oh, my gosh.

Oh, look at that tub.

You've got a nice
big soaking tub.

- That is great.
- Huge walk-in shower.

And a his and hers sink?

This was very
important to us.

Yeah.

Just kind of
having your own space.

I like that.
- All right.

Well, there's even
more upstairs.

- Let's do it.
- So let's go that way.

I love the stairs.

I think that's my favorite part
of the whole house.

I think they did a good job
with the rails,

to kind of keep it open
so that light can come through.

It makes a big difference.

This is guest
bedroom number one.

- Cool.
- Oh.

You have to try
and guess the theme.

- Cow.
- Yes! Nice work!

- Yay!
- More cowbell!

I was just going off
that pillow, but...

Only in Indiana can you
have a cow guest room.

Anywhere else,
I don't know if...

- But it works.
- ...it would work.

- It looks amazing.
- It looks nice.

All right. You want to see
guest bedroom number two?

- Yeah, let's do it.
- All right.

So second bedroom upstairs.

Dogs.

Dogs!
Good job!

We got a little carried away
with dogs in this room.

There might be too many.

It's fun, though.
It's really fun.

Take a little peek
in there.

- Oh, nice.
- Full bath, double vanity.

- Wow.
- These are so...

I love these.
- Aren't they pretty?

- Yeah, they are.
- The sconces?

Yeah, it just really
adds something.

This is huge
for a guest bathroom.

Well,
let's go check outside.

All right.
Let's check it out.

Got a nice big backyard.

So plenty of room
for your dog to play...

- Look at this yard.
- Look at this.

...and a nice big deck.

Oh, look! Actually,
I love those raised beds.

- Yeah?
- Mom and I made those.

Yeah, you can have
your little garden.

Yeah.

The backyard is huge.

I kind of can't believe
how big it is

in this neighborhood.

There's plenty of room
to entertain

in the summertime.
It's gonna be great.

We can tell that Mina
and Karen are really trying

to change the neighborhood
for the better,

and they're invested...
- Invested in their neighborhood.

- ...in their neighborhood.
- What do you guys think?

We love it.

It's way more
than I even expected.

The house is beautiful,
and it really seems to check off

all of the key features
that we're looking for.

The only thing that
we are concerned about is,

we want to make sure
that we stay in our budget.

But it is beautiful.
I loved it.

Yeah.

So this house
on Woodlawn cost us $40,000.

We put
about $200,000 into it,

and because
we were able to create

so much extra space
with the addition off the back,

we were able to list it
for a little bit

more than
we initially thought,

right at $300,000,

which makes
a potential profit

of around $60,000.

Don't take too much time, but...

All right.

...give it some serious
thought and let us know.

Awesome.
Well, thanks so much.

- No problem.
- This has been awesome.

We'll let you guys
get out of here now.

All right.

I would just love
to have them here.

It feels like them.
- I know.
