Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 8 - The Finale: A Master Class at Harrods - full transcript

All eyes are on the prize. The competition climaxes as the finalists lead master classes at Harrods and picture their evolution. A winner is picked.

ten aspiring MUAs
embarked on a life-changing journey.

This is massive!

They have tackled some of the industry's
toughest assignments.

-Get it on! Boom.
-[Ophelia squeals]

Judged by the biggest names
in the business.

I need the girls in lineup!

And at Glow Up HQ...

Bring in the models!

The pressure is on.

...they've slayed the creative briefs.

Good golly!

[gasping]

Each week, the two who fail to deliver...

[groaning]

went head-to-head in a Face Off.

You're only as good as your last look.

-And the losers went home.
-[Stacey] Darling.

Now just three remain to battle it out

to land a contract assisting

the world's biggest makeup artists.

The winner of Glow Up is...

We actually made it.
The winner's at the table right now.

[Ophelia] Oh my Gee!

[laughter]

When our finalists first came
into the competition

they were already good makeup artists.

-Check out the kit bags.
-[laughter]

[Val] But the level of work
that we've seen

from them is truly astonishing.

-Ding dong!
-[applause]

Going in to this final
it really could be anyone's game.

[MUAs sighing]

-Morning, hello.
-[Val] Morning.

Morning, guys, and welcome to the final.

I've got chills. I have.
How do you get chills on your legs?

You have been booked to lead
your own makeup masterclass

at one of the world's most famous
department stores...

Harrods.

-Oh, my Gee!
-[laughter]

For your masterclass we would like you
to create a signature look

concentrating on one feature: the eyes.

We want you to put your stamp on it.

I'm nervous already.

No pressure, guys.

[laughter]

[Stacey] Masterclasses
are the latest craze

taking the beauty world by storm.

A masterclass is primarily
a demonstration.

It is a presentation of a makeup look.

[Stacey] Often sell-out events,
they're a chance for people to gain

first-hand experience
of the latest makeup trends.

The MUAs have a day to prepare
their masterclass

in which they must create
a signature eye look.

Today I'm going to do a bold, colorful
smoky eye.

Eve has decided to go
with one of the looks she knows best

from her day job back in Liverpool.

[Eve] All I wanted to do
was have an experience

and leave this competition as a better
makeup artist than when I came in.

And I do feel like I've accomplished that.

[Stacey] James is drawing on
his background in drag

to create a signature lash look.

Add a pair of lashes to Mickey Mouse,
you get Minnie Mouse.

I'd like to be a big inspiration
for the next generation of people

because if you put your mind to something

you can really achieve your dreams.

So, there's a lot more than just winning
a title for me.

Personality.

[Stacey] Ophelia will be drawing on

her love of striking eyeliner
and having struggled

to convince her family that makeup
is a viable career.

For her, the stakes could not be higher.

I still think that my family

doesn't understand how big this is for me.

It's not just about makeup,
it was about me fighting for my rights,

and my freedom to do what I love doing.

To have the bravery to...

to do what...

to follow your dreams,

and not get a normal job...

[sniffs]

It's like another level of bravery

in life, so...

It's just like, wow!

I've worked hard for this
and I deserve this.

I'm not gonna crack, so...

Yeah.

[Stacey] Harrods have been selling
high end beauty products

for over 150 years.

Today, thanks to
a multi-million pound restoration

its beauty halls are one of
the largest makeup destinations

in the world.

-[Stacey] Good morning.
-[Val] Morning.

Allow me to introduce guest judge
for today,

Director of Beauty here at Harrods,
it's Annalise Fard.

Thank you Stacey.

We are super proud

to host the most iconic names
in the beauty industry,

whether that's selling their product

or inviting them to host
their very own masterclass.

It's the final, so we thought we could
probably do with a little extra help.

We've invited along a second guest judge.

All the way from Los Angeles,

please welcome Anastasia Soare

from Anastasia Beverly Hills.

[laughter, applause]

Wow! Hi.

[Stacey] Anastasia has been travelling
the world

holding masterclasses for nearly 30 years.

Her signature feature: the eyebrows.

I invented eyebrows, for God's sake.

I started a category
in the beauty industry that didn't exist.

She's turned her brow-shaping service

into a billion pound business.

I started from the early '90s to work
with a lot of celebrities in Hollywood,

from Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham,

Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian,

even the former first lady,
Michelle Obama.

It was such an honour.

First of all, be original.

There are so many makeup artists
out there.

What makes you different?

Remember, the audience is there to learn
tips and techniques from you.

Be clear on your message,

be confident and passionate.

You need to engage the audience.

I want to learn from you.

[laughter]

Will we make a move? Let's go.

[Stacey] Thank you.

[Eve] The pressure was enough,
but now Anastasia is here as well.

The pressure has just gone
absolutely through the roof.

[Val] This is an incredible opportunity
for our finalists.

They're doing a masterclass in Harrods!

I mean, all the greats have been here:

Charlotte Tilbury,
and even Kim Kardashian's makeup artist,

Mario Dedivanovic.

Somebody has sent a message

and he's asked me to play it for you.

I don't know if you'll recognize him.

[screaming]

Oh, my God!

Hey guys, "Makeup By Mario" here.

Huge congrats for making it on the finals
of Glow Up.

Please make sure
that you're teaching authentically

and make sure that you are taking them
through your thought process as well.

You're in really great hands
with Anastasia.

She's such an icon in the industry.

So, congrats guys and break a leg.

[squealing]

I love how he introduced himself.

He needs no introduction.

Oh, my God!

[Stacey] With just under an hour
until showtime,

an audience of industry experts arrive.

We have a number of beauty journalists.

We've even got British Vogue,

and we have beauty bloggers, vloggers,

so these are a tough crowd to please.

[Stacey] The MUAs will
take the stage individually

and will have 30 minutes
to impress with their makeup skills

and presentation.

[tense drumbeat]

The first MUA up is Eve.

-I knew it!
-[Ophelia laughing]

[Stacey] Swapping her Liverpool salon
for Glow Up HQ...

Hi, what would you like doing today?

...Eve has fought for her place
in the final.

You have 15 minutes,
I want this done in 10.

I'll get it done.

I never know what my clients will ask for
when they come in

so I feel like I work better
just a bit more spontaneous.

Eve's is outstanding.

Eve has sometimes struggled with
the more creative aspects

of the competition,
leaving her with a few near misses.

I don't think that's acceptable.

Eve, you'll be in
the Face Off elimination.

[Stacey] But when working
with one of Britain's best photographers

she bagged an eight-page spread.

[Eve] I've never been prouder
of something in my life.

Well done.

It gives me great pleasure
to invite Eve to the stage.

[cheering, applause]

[Val] Go Eve!

Thank you.

Um, today we're gonna be focusing
on the eyes.

So I'm gonna go in with
some different creams.

So when I'm working, I always like to do
the eyes at the same time.

I never like to complete one eye
and then do the other.

I feel like this helps you with symmetry.
Just buff this in.

You need interjections, you know,
but one of them...

Why is she doing this makeup?
What's her inspiration?

So, along the lower lash line

pulling it out and then up
into the crease.

Maybe a story would be good
at this moment.

[Dominic] Otherwise it feels like
we're at school.

And I'm just focusing that
exactly where we had the pink before.

Just like that.

I am gonna go in and add another color...

[Val] I think the audience might be
a bit bored now.

Valerie, I am bored right now.

A masterclass is more than just a class
about makeup.

You have to be a performer,

you have to engage your audience.

I always like to use a really small brush.
If you have a small brush,

you have small mistakes,
a big brush, big mistakes,

so it's definitely better
to start off smaller.

Interesting. She's actually relaxed
into the situation now.

I'm not going with the black liner today.

I feel like sometimes black
is a bit boring.

[Eve] The reason why
I'm choosing the pink is

because the liner is gonna go across
where the turquoise is.

If I pick a color
that's close to turquoise

you're not gonna see the liner
and it's not worth having it on.

With liner, 'cause your eye's 3D,
you should work in thirds.

So I never like to stop any color
directly in the middle.

It always needs to be a bit more that way
or a bit more that way.

Tick.

Ding dong.

[Dominic and Val] It's beautiful.

There we go. That is the look, complete.

We'll now open for any questions
if anyone has any?

Hi, I'm Kathleen from British Vogue.
What was your inspiration?

I work in a salon, I do a lot of
brown smoky eyes with gold glitter

and I knew that I just wanted to do
anything that wasn't neutral,

so that was behind my choice for today.

I'm Emma McCarthy from
the Evening Standard.

When you were designing the look
was it a catwalk or editorial

or was it the everyday consumer
that you were designing for?

I don't know if you can tell
but I don't live 'round here.

I'm from a place called The Wirral
and people look like this in Liverpool.

This is like, "I'd wear this to work."

[laughter, applause]

There's no such thing as being
too dressed up.

Just casual going-to-the-shops look,
really.

I love it. Can I steal that line?

Yes. You can have anything.

[laughter]

-Thank you.
-[applause]

Bye.

[Dominic] That was a turn up
for the books.

I knew she'd smash it.

-Mm, no, you didn't.
-Yes, I did.

Her look was very original.

I loved the way she mixed the colors.

I thought her use of color was bold.

I liked that she didn't just explain
what she was doing,

but why she was doing it.

[James] Hello!

I feel like I'm coming back
from a Face Off or something.

[Stacey] Waiting to take the stage next
is Ophelia.

You're the only finalist that's never been
in a Face Off elimination.

Well, thank God.
I just try and do my best

and sort of mainly just focus on myself.

[Stacey] And the head-down tactic

has secured Ophelia a place in the final.

Every look that I do,
I have to make sure it's perfect.

That is exceptional.

I have to make sure
that it's intoxicating.

[gasping]

It's exciting, it's new, it's fresh.

Welcome to Ophelia's mind.

All the emotions together. [laughs]

[Stacey] But Ophelia's single-mindedness

has sometimes been her downfall.

What she hasn't brought is the tie-dye.

Gobsmacked!

-Sort of hate it, actually.
-You have to stay in a positive manner.

I thought she was better than that.

[Ophelia] I came into this competition
with a shell on.

Obviously, slowly, I'm coming out
of my shell.

A lot of people don't know
that I like glitter, but it's the best.

Just maybe very slightly.

[applause]

[Stacey] Ophelia has just 30 minutes

to wow the audience with her liner look.

Thank you so much for coming today.

How are you all doing?

-[audience] Good.
-Yes! Amazing.

I can see a lot of people with good style

and, you know, getting excited.

Good engagement.

Today I'm going to show you

something called, I like to call,
a liner transformation.

[Ophelia] I'm going to just do
a little line here.

What I usually would like to do,
is go in the middle of the lid.

That will determine how thick you want
your liner to be.

-That's a good tip.
-Mm.

So, does anyone like to use

a brush-tip liner as well?

-Yeah, I'm a brush.
-Brush? Yes!

This is your office look.
And now you're ready for dinner.

[laughter]

That's sweet.

Why not be a little bit bigger?

It just really elongates her eye

and make it more fierce.

[Ophelia] So now, after dinner,
where should you go?

If you want to go to a club,
you want to be loud, you want to be bold.

[Dominic] I like how she's introduced
this character.

[Val] Yeah, she's telling a story.

-[Ophelia] Is there any questions left?
-[woman] Yes.

We had the kitten flick at the office,

-and now the dual line at the club.
-Yes.

When does she turn into a tiger?
What do you see as the next step?

-Do you want me to step it up?
-Go girl.

Okay, I will step it up for you.

[Stacey] For a masterclass,
the artist should be in control,

so taking on an audience request
is risky business.

Usually what I like to do
when I want to amp a look up even more

is to do another liner on the top.

-She's got six minutes left.
-She's got six minutes to get it on.

Usually I like to just dot it.

-Will she have time to do the other side?
-Exactly.

You just really need to take your time
and train your eye

how to look for symmetry.

-I think she's got about two minutes.
-Two minutes?

Is there any other questions
while I'm doing this?

Get that liner on.

So, I just made a slight mistake in there.
Don't worry.

Hold my hand, I'm worried.

I just need a cotton bud. Um...

Pretty much there,
just a little bit on that side.

Not symmetrical...

So here we go.

[Val] Her symmetry was off.
If you are going to take the risk

of somebody in the audience
asking you to go somewhere

where you haven't been before...

-Don't go!
-Don't go there.

[Dominic] 'Cause that would've been
a great opportunity

to turn around and say, "I love that.
For my next masterclass,

-that's what I'll be doing."
-Exactly.

"Please come back next week
and I'll show you something else."

She's so original, she's a perfectionist,

everything she does needs to be perfect.

I liked that there was
personality in there.

Ophelia did a really good job
of explaining the technique

behind her eyeliner skills.

[Stacey] With Ophelia's and Eve's
masterclasses complete,

there's just one MUA remaining.

Makeup trainee, James, has struggled

when trying to execute
someone else's vision.

-Are the lashes meant to be white?
-No.

I have found the industry challenges
difficult throughout this competition.

I'm not sure what I would do with it
to make it work.

Just struggling with following
artist's brief.

It's not very "Strictly."

The tiger has no stripes!

Landing him in hot water at Glow Up HQ.

[James] I've been in the Face Off chairs
four times, each time I've seen

how I cope,
how I've pushed through,

but how I also prove my point
that I deserve to stay here.

-James, you've beat the seat.
-[sighs]

-[Dominic] You've absolutely smashed it.
-[applause]

[Stacey] When allowed off the leash,
creatively, James has soared.

It is so courageous, it is so different.

You're a visionary, not a replicator.

[applause]

[James] Thank you, guys.

I'll be demoing what I'd like to call
the lash revamp.

So, I'm going to be using lashes
in different areas of the face.

I'm going to take my curler
so I'm just making sure that I go in,

hold for five seconds.

I actually do this in three steps.
I go in for a second time

and them I'm going to turn inwards
just so I can really get

a little bit of extra tension

on the inner lashes so that they have
as much of a lift as possible.

How often would people use a lash curler?

-Every day.
-Every day, that's great.

Really engaging.

[Stacey] Like with any masterclass,
there's a camera on the model's face,

so even at the back, you can see
the close up detail of the artist's work.

[Val] Can't see.

[Dominic] No, we can't see.

[Val] I did say work the stage.
I didn't say block the camera.

[laughs]

[James] I'm repeating the exact same step...

He could be poking her eye with a stick,
but we don't know.

-[James] ... and then releasing.
-[Val] Oh, finally.

Why didn't he stand
on that side from the beginning?

I don't know.

[Stacey] Having curled the natural lashes,

James moves on to applying the false ones.

[James] Actually, one moment.

I have actually prepared
two of the same

and I hate that happens.

If you make a mistake in masterclass
you gotta roll with it.

They don't know what you're gonna do,
so they don't know if it's a mistake.

Where am I going?
Right and left. Yes. [laughs]

The left eye.

[James] Open and look forward
for me.

[Stacey] James's look is inspired by
a drag technique of creating larger eyes

by lowering the bottom lashes.

[James] Being different is bold to me.

Why do lashes have to remain
just on the top lash line?

It needs to look finesse
as much as it's, you know, edgy.

I do like it.

[James] One night I was at home,
and by accident,

I had a lash fall and stick to my face

and then I thought, this looks cool.

Yeah, it'll definitely raise an eyebrow
and raise an eyelash.

[laughter]

Now I'll open the floor to any questions.

I'm Jamie. I'm an LGBT writer and editor.

How important is your self and
your personality in the work that you do?

I find it hard to follow a script.

I find it hard to stay in line

and do things just quite originally.
It kind of makes me emotional.

It takes a lot of bravery to step out,
to be different.

Absolutely, congratulations.

-I think you're brilliant.
-Thank you very much.

Thank you to my lovely model as well.
Can you see everyone?

[laughter, applause]

[Val] There's lots of people here looking
for new trends to write about.

Are they gonna write about James?

-You bet they are.
-They will.

Absolutely.

He made me see
that there is art in just lashes.

I think definitely we could see that
in Dazed Beauty.

-[Eve] Hey!
-[James] Hi.

[sighs]

How do you feel? Come and take a seat.

That was the best thing I've ever done.

-[squealing]
-What did you do that for? I hate you!

-I hate you.
-[James laughs]

I don't know, it just... I loved it.

Oh, my God, I loved it so much.

[laughter]

The fact that we've done that says a lot
for the future.

Tomorrow... big, big day.

We find out who our winner is.
The winner of Glow Up.

Everyone hold hands together in unison.

Today is the Glow Up final!

It feels like a voting thing.

I'm like, "Vote Eve to win."

But, it's not.

[Stacey] It's down to the judges
and at Glow Up HQ,

they must decide who impressed the least
yesterday

and will start the creative brief
in the red chair.

[Val] Let's start with Eve.

I like that part where she said everybody

in Liverpool wears this color.

I loved that.

[Dominic] It made you really see
who this artist was.

Actually, if she'd have positioned that
in the beginning,

I think we would have been on the journey
a bit more with her.

[Dominic] Ophelia.

She had us when she said, "Okay,
I'm gonna show you a makeup

-that takes you from office to clubbing."
-[judges] Yeah.

I think she gave very good tips.
If you will do a mistake, how you do it.

She should have owned the room a bit more

especially when the question came up,
"What else would you do?"

The class ran away from her, there.

[Val] James, he loves working the room,

sometimes to his detriment
because every time he moved

to the left hand side,

he blocked the camera view,

-so we couldn't see.
-[Annalise] Such a shame.

When he was teaching us how to use
an eyelash curler successfully,

I drunk that in.
I literally want to go out

and buy a new pair of eyelash curlers
and try those tips and tricks.

-[Val] This is a strong final three.
-[Annalise] Definitely.

Did any of them do anything bad enough
to get a time penalty?

[Stacey] Will we make a move?

-Yes.
-Let's do this.

All of you, good luck.

[tense music playing]

Morning, judges.

[all] Morning.

[sighs] Wow, this is a new color.

[Ophelia sighs] Oh, it's me.

[laughs]

MUAs, as you can see,

there are no Face Off chairs.

That's because you all did so well
yesterday.

Therefore, no one will receive
a time penalty.

[Val] Ding dong.

[applause, cheering]

For your final creative brief, we want you
to produce a look

on the theme of evolution.

[Dominic] This look should encompass
new elements, as well as skills

you have learnt in this competition.

We want to know who you were

before you started this competition.

And who are you now
as it comes to a close.

I don't know why I get so emotional.

I get so emotional
'cause I know how hard you work.

James, Ophelia, Eve...
The MUA that fails to impress the judges

will then be asked to leave.

Meaning we're left with two MUAs

to battle it out in our final Face Off.

Are you ready?

[laughs]

Bring in the models!

[fast tempo electronic beat]

[Stacey] The MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for their final creative brief

and have chosen the gender
of their models.

Your time starts now.

The MUAs each have two and a half hours

to complete their final creative brief.

That's too fine. I need big scissors.
I need my scissors. [sighs]

I literally do not have any scissors.
I can't even cut this out now.

I'm trying to pick which one looks
the fishiest.

[Stacey] Eve's interpretation of evolution
is based on a peacock flounder fish,

which adapts quickly to its surroundings:

a trait she has used
in the professional assignments.

I'm making fish eyes out of these baubles.
I'm gonna be using a prosthetic,

possibly using a little bit of Play-Doh

and a lot of random stuff.

Yeah, that's gonna fit okay.

[Stacey] James's look is based on osmosis:

the process of water moving through cells,

mirroring the way he absorbs knowledge.

[James] I've soaked up so much
in this competition.

I have listened to what the critiques
have been

and I've willingly made a choice to grow,
so that I can be in the final.

Okay, now I'm ready... I think.

[Stacey] Ophelia's look is based
on the evolution of diamonds.

Formed under intense pressure,

she feels they reflect her journey
in the process.

She's using prosthetic boils

to create eyeballs.

This whole competition has been
an eye-opening experience for me

so, I just wanted to play around with
that idea of eye opening.

[Val] That could be quite spiritual,
like the third eye.

If that's the third eye, you want
to get it looked at 'cause it is gammy.

[James] First, I'm making silicone,
and the way I'm sculpting it is creating

a three-dimensional effect
for the cells and veins.

Can I just say I'm so touched

that in your final creative brief,
you've paid homage to me.

[laughter]

[Stacey] Ophelia is using new techniques

incorporating more than just makeup.

This is interesting, putting the netting
over the eyes.

Don't worry I'm being very, very gentle.

Oh, I love that.

She's ripped off that coarse sponge
and she's holding it with tweezers.

-A stipple sponge.
-Yeah.

This is latex.

I'm trying to create
a new skin-type texture

on top of the mesh.

[Val] That's not exactly symmetrical.

One is definitely higher than the other.
She needs to see that.

I'm seeing Cyclops.

-She's not seeing nothing.
-Uh-uh.

[laughs] Sorry.

[Stacey] James is drawing on a technique
he knows well: blocking brows.

[Anastasia] He knows
how to cover eyebrows.

[Dominic] He does.

That's perfect.

Yeah, they are proper slick.

I will have eyebrows after this, right?

-Yes, this is all water soluble, trust me.
-Okay.

Drag queens do this on a daily basis.

What is this white thing?

-That's Play-Doh.
-[Anastasia] Mm-hmm.

[Anastasia] Silicone based, yes?

No, it's Play-Doh, like kids Play-Doh.

-Oh, okay.
-[Eve laughs]

MUAs, you've had one hour.

You have one and a half hours left.

[fast tempo beat playing]

Alright, let's just start beading.
If not, I'm gonna be very late.

[Stacey] Having painted eyeballs
onto the prosthetic,

Ophelia plans to create
crystallized blood using individual gems.

I think I need ten hands right now.

It's really time consuming.

Oh, please move quicker.

Ophelia's got a lot of work to do.

[Val] She's stressed.

Oh! I just dropped a gem.

Oh, be quick. Oh God, come on.

[Anastasia] What're you doing here?

So, black for me at the beginning.
I did feel a little bit suffocated

at the start of this competition,
trying to find my place.

And then I'm gonna finish off
with some more lighter white tones

and that gives off confidence,

evolving creativity,
and that's where I feel I am now.

MUAs, you are halfway through,
you've got an hour and 15 minutes left.

You said to me
at the start of this competition,

"My folks initially weren't totally
onboard and I just wanna prove to people..."

There's literally one time I was arguing
with my parents.

I just went to my room and I was like...
[inhales deeply]

"Shall I just, you know, be normal?"

but, literally, that thought scares me
so much and I told myself

I'm never going to think like that again.

-You've got to live your life.
-Yeah.

Have you spoken to your parents
since the competition?

-They must be so proud.
-I hope they are.

[repeating] Work, work, work...

But I'm going for it
because this is what the final is about.

[Eve] Going with the flow.

[Val] Gretchen is beginning
to resemble a fish.

If you bagged that from the riverside

you would throw it back pretty quickly.
[laughs]

-[Dominic] He's a very expressive painter.
-[Val] Very expressive.

-His art will tell you how he is feeling.
-[Dominic] Yeah.

[Anastasia] The explosion inside him.

I'm just making sure that...

it looks like blood dripping.

She's actually stitching the beads
to the prosthetic.

[Dominic] It's almost bejewelling a cut.

I've never seen that before.
This looks beautiful.

MUAs, you have 25 minutes left.

No, no, no.
I've so much more to do. [sighs]

I'm gonna start making my fins.

This is definitely a first, but...

in my head it works,

[Eve] Ah!

[Dominic] We said to her to use new skills
but also incorporate things

that you are comfortable with.

There is nothing comfortable about
what she's done.

[Dominic] Where is her smoky eyes?
Where's the Wirral?

I don't see that look in Liverpool
for sure.

No, unless they have a sci-fi convention.

I'm trying to make this
as freaky as possible.

[gasping] Wow, look at the bright orange.

-[Val] It looks electrifying.
-[Dominic] It does!

-Let's hope he knows when to stop.
-Yes.

[Ophelia] Okay,
I'm gonna put a little lip on you.

[judges exclaiming]

[Val] I have to say that I did like it
before the lip.

-[Anastasia] Without the lip.
-I think the lip

could have just been a beautiful lip
and then that would have been sexy,

whereas now we've gone to the horror side.

I don't speak, I don't talk.

Let's pray that this works.

It does look good, close up. It does!

It looks like Lady Gaga under the sea.

-Let me know if I'm choking you, okay?
-Okay.

So, this thread came about,

by the Japanese folklore story
of red thread of fate.

It literally means everything is connected
with this red thread.

So, everyone that you know.

This is all about my connection between me
and makeup itself.

Now this could be the ruination
of Ophelia's work

because she's got to make sure
that that string does not move.

-Is that alright?
-Mm-hmm.

I just want to keep
the three dimensional detail of the veins.

It's just my last push
before the bell goes.

Ten minutes left, last ten minutes.

[ethereal vocal music playing]

Wet like a fish?

Yeah, wet like a fish.

[Ophelia] I'm scared. I am very scared.

MUAs, your time is up.

Stop what you're doing, please,.
Pop everything down right now.

[Ophelia sighs]

[Eve] Your ball's a little bit dirty...

Well done. Can you take your models
next door, please, to be photographed?

-[model] I can't see nothing.
-[Eve] You're gonna go very carefully.

[laughter]

[Stacey] With their final looks
photographed, it's time to find out

which two have done enough
to impress the judges

and keep their place in the competition.

Eve, please step forward.

I jumped out of my skin!

[Eve] My look is based on
the peacock flounder fish.

This particular fish camouflages itself
and adapts in certain situations.

We've done many different assignments
and I've always tried something new.

So, that's how I related to that.

[Val] Because the goggles are so big
and they are slightly asymmetric,

-it makes it a bit more of a comical look.
-Yeah.

[Val] The prosthetics that you've used,

I feel that your application on the nose

-could have been better.
-Yeah.

But the way you put the paint

on the top lip, it actually made the lip

look like it was protruding forward

and I liked that.

I think you didn't plan this look properly

but I could feel that you could adapt
very quickly.

You've done something with this process
that I love, which is someone coming along

and being able to just embrace
everything we throw at you.

And because of that, you have grown
and become stronger and stronger.

You are an amazing artist.

You remind me a lot of me.

There's a lot of times you wing it.

Oh my God, Val.

[Eve laughs]

-It's true. So, thank you.
-Well done.

[applause]

I'm not going to cry, okay. [laughs]

But at the same time,
I'm probably going to cry. [laughs]

[all sighing]

James.

[James] My concept is based on
the scientific term, osmosis,

that also is defined as an assimilation
of ideas and knowledge.

So, for me that is like soaking up
this whole experience.

[Dominic] The colors that you use:

the dark blue going all the way up
to the light blue,

the orange looks vibrant
all the way through.

It's technically really advanced.

-What I have to pick up on is details.
-[James] Of course.

And it is a little bit just around
the eye...

Just seal it off and it would be amazing.

I think this is James inside, exploding.

I love the way you used the silicone.
You've done amazing.

[Val] That is the evolution of you.

You've grown up
and finally, you're in your calm space

where you go like,
"Yeah, I think I've got this."

Ophelia.

[Ophelia] The first thing that I thought
of evolution is the formation of diamonds.

Diamonds are formed under a huge amount
of pressure and I resonated with that

with the fight that I have to go through
for my whole entire makeup journey.

[Anastasia] Well,
your skills are incredible.

You have the vision,
not only the precision.

[Val] The moment I saw you
put that gauze on the eye,

I was dead.

[laughter]

[Val] Absolutely beautiful and haunting.

And then you did the lip.

I wished you'd done more of a sensual lip

because I think it would have looked
more editorial.

[Dominic] Technically, the prosthetics
are perfectly done.

The way you've taken warts
and turned them into eyeballs, I mean,

there's some sick stuff going on
in your head, but, I like it, you know?

-[Ophelia laughs]
-[applause]

Thank you, guys.
Please, could you go next door?

[tense music playing]

[Stacey] The judges need to decide
who has impressed the least

and will be going home in third place.

She works with spontaneity,

she is not afraid as an artist.

This is the cross between artistry,

poetry, storytelling, high-end fashion.

I mean, the way he combines colors,
his vision...

He creates magic.

It's been tough, but I think we all agree

who our top two artists are.

And I think we all know who's going home.

[dramatic piano music playing]

[Stacey sighs]

The judges have made a decision.

The MUAs that will be going through

to the final Face Off challenge are...

Ophelia...

[sighs, laughs]

and James.

-[Ophelia sighs]
-[Eve laughs]

[Eve] Come on, guys.

Good luck to you both.

-[James] Well done.
-[Eve] You've got this.

[Eve laughing]

Eve, it's been an absolute honour

to watch you in this journey.

Thank you.

I came in this competition
not expecting to get this far...

To come away in third place is incredible.

That's a bronze. That's still a medal.
[laughs]

[Eve] Alright, come on guys.

And I've got an eight-page spread
with Rankin, so... [laughs]

[Stacey] Ahead of the final Face Off,
the judges want to look back

on the MUAs' work
throughout the competition.

-[Dominic] James.
-You can see right from the get-go

he knows his line work.

It was a really great way of showing us
everything he was about.

I was absolutely gobsmacked
when I saw this.

I think I may have gone "ding dong."

[laughs] And also he's starting
to experiment,

to push himself out of
what he feels comfortable with.

To really think creatively.

Here, we have texture, we have chaos,
we have broken bits.

He has really transformed his approach
to makeup.

This was enough
to get him out of the Face Off chair.

And lucky for him
because he then created this.

Which is a masterpiece, it has to be said.

Texture, blending,
from dark to light...

This was all about evolution and one thing
we can say about James

is that he has gone
on an incredible journey.

[Val] Ophelia's work...

and she kicked this off
with a major ding dong.

Week one, she gives us this.

[Dominic] And then this.

It is grotesque and I love it.

This tells us she's a makeup artist
with many hats.

When I saw this, I fully believed
that here is an artist.

She's very technical.
I mean, how do you beat that?

-[Dominic] With this. Just...
-Absolutely breathtaking.

[Dominic] We asked her to show us
an evolution

and this did it.

These MUAs are neck and neck.

It is going to come down to the wire.

[Stacey] The winner will need to deliver
technical looks under time pressure

and there is no better way to test that
than a Face Off.

I know Ophelia is nervous, because
she hasn't been in this environment.

I feel having been in the Face Off
at least once is a benefit

because it is a whole new feeling
going in there underneath that pressure.

I've fought so hard
throughout this whole time.

This moment right now is deciding
where my career path goes.

[Stacey] As always, James and Ophelia
will Face Off

over a pair of identical twins.

Two MUAs stand before us

but there can be only one winner.

So, for your final Face Off,

we want a full beat,

when the full makeup
looks absolutely flawless.

Now, your model already has a fierce brow,

liner and lashes.

[Val] You need to bring a smoky eye

that goes no further than the socket

and foundation, concealer, highlighter,

sculpting, blush, and,
to finalize your look,

we want a full, bold, red lip.

Think about the complete look
and how every element fits together.

MUAs, you have 40 minutes

to prove you should be the winner.

Your time starts now.

[fast tempo electronic music playing]

It's one thing to be able to do
a creative look in a couple of hours.

But to succeed in this industry
you need to work quickly and precisely.

The Face Off is a test of skill
under pressure

which the MUA will have to fulfill
to get that prize.

I really loved the way
that Ophelia went straight in

and smashed that eye,

-but she needs to remember the whole map.
-[Dominic] Yeah.

[Val] The great thing about James is,

-his skin is looking really good.
-Yeah.

[Val] He just needs to get that eye on.

Twenty minutes have gone,
you're halfway through.

I'm a little bit worried for Ophelia

because I think that contour's gone patchy
and been overworked.

James is a little wishy-washy in the eye.

That's because he's using
the tiniest little brush.

-I know.
-We don't like tepid, we want it hot.

We want full beat.

[music crescendos]

Five... four... three... two... one.

MUAs stop what you're doing, please.

[Val] Conflab?

I think so.

[Dominic] They both put up
a really strong fight.

[both] They both struggled with the lips.

[Val] Ophelia's lip is slightly wonky
on the left hand side.

James needed to be a lot fuller.

I like James's color of foundation,

I think he's chosen a more subtle shade

that doesn't look like
she's wearing anything.

Whereas Ophelia's is a little deep,

but Ophelia's base is more flawless.

And you know what?
It's not how they got there,

it's the end result.

We want it to tick all the boxes
and, you know, one MUA did.

Ophelia, James, for the last eight weeks

we've had lashings of lashes,

sprinkles of glitter,

but above all,

we have had bags and bags of creativity

that have produced
just the most incredible makeup looks.

And it's time to find out

who has done enough to bag that prize

that money can't buy:

Working with a global agency

alongside some of the best MUAs
in the world.

[music intensifies]

And the winner...

of Glow Up...

is...

[music crescendos]

-Ophelia. Ding dong, darling!
-[applause]

Oh, my God! [Ophelia screams]

[applause]

-Thank you so much.
-[Val] Amazing!

[Stacey] James... Just so, so close.

You have got so much to be so proud of.

Ophelia, the most brilliant champion.

[laughing, cheering]

Oh, my Gee! I've won.

I can't believe it!

I just cannot wait for my next step
and for my future.

I've always grabbed opportunities
where I could.

I know I'm a fighter and that there's
a whole lifetime ahead of me,

of following my dream.

Huge congratulations.

[Ophelia] I need to get started now!

What's the next big thing?

Give me that now! I'm ready.

[upbeat music playing]
