Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 2 - Fashion Week - full transcript

The 9 MUAs hit London Fashion Week to do the make-up for a successful brand. Back at HQ the creative brief challenges them to create a look representing their icon. Realistic freckles are the skill drill for the elimination Face-Off.

[upbeat electronic music playing]

[train horn]

This week we are at King's Cross
where in a few hours time,

this pathway will turn into a catwalk
for London Fashion Week.

[Stacey] Fashion week is so full on,
resident judge Val

is busy at another catwalk show.

But she'll be back later to scrutinise
the MUA's work.

[MUAs] Hello! Hi!

How are we feeling?

[MUAs] Good, yeah.

Jake.

[MUAs laughing]

-[Dominic] Nice. Well done.
-Ready to be professional.

So, today you have been booked
to do the makeup

for the incredibly successful brand...

House of Holland.

[cheering]

[Stacey] Having taken the fashion world
by storm, aged just 23,

Henry Holland's designs proved
a global hit

becoming a firm favourite
with the likes of Alexa Chung,

Rita Ora, and Harry Styles.

He's our guest judge for this week
but he's also your boss for today.

Please welcome Henry Holland!

[applause]

How are you, Henry?

I'm good, thanks. How are you?

Thank you so much for having us.

Thank you for having me.

Today is the most important day
of my year.

It's our London Fashion Week Show
for House of Holland

and I need you to be on your A game
'cause you're gonna help execute

my vision for the show.

And the best performing MUA,

you will get an advantage tomorrow
at the creative brief.

But it's not only Henry
that you have to impress today.

We've also got our key makeup artist.

It's the guy called...

Dominic Skinner.

-[laughter]
-[applause]

[Dominic] Come with me
and we'll show you backstage.

[intense electronic music playing]

My role as the key artist
is to head up the team

and get that makeup looking amazing.

[Stacey] Dominic has collaborated
with Henry on a design that the MUAs

will have to replicate.

[Dominic] So, the look for today:

It's a story about a girl
who's gone to Coachella

-and then it's kind of the morning after.
-[Stacey] The walk of shame.

The walk of shame, but with glitter.

For me, it's deliver or bust,
because it's my reputation on the line.

I set the bar, they have to hit it.

I'm calling it "Lived in, Loved in."

It's about getting this look on

but making it look like it's dispersed
and worn off a bit.

We're gonna start with the colour.
Just close your eyes...

It goes up to the brow and just blend it
up towards the peak.

Then just look up...

[Stacey] After buffing in eye shadow,
Dominic uses a technique

called "draping" to contour the temples.

Just blend it up above the brow
and then just let it fade away.

[Stacey] Pigment colours
are added to accent the eyes

and then it's time
for some serious sparkle.

[Dominic] Glitter is like herding cats,
it can go everywhere.

So, it's a really fine balance
between speed and skill.

And there you go, done.

You're gonna get one model
and if you do well, I'll give you another.

If you don't, I'm gonna take your model
and give them to someone else

and you might just end up sitting out,
okay?

Go on then, what are you waiting for?

[Stacey] Dominic's shown the look
in purple but the MUAs will also work

with palettes of pink and gold.

There should be no differentiation
between my makeup or the MUAs' makeup.

The level has to be really high.

[Shanice] I've taken in Dominic's demo.
I've written everything he said.

So I am just ready to crack on now.

[Stacey] It's just two hours
until showtime.

Each MUA has been randomly assigned
a model,

but are at the mercy of them
arriving from other shows.

[Keziah] I'm making sure
that I'm prepared.

I can't panic when the model's here.

Come on then, Kenna, take a seat.

Fashion Week is crazy.
You might get your model first or last.

You might have an hour or five minutes.
It's just the name of the game.

[Stacey] Next to get a model, is Brandon...

So I'm just gonna get you
to look up for me

and then close your eyes.

...who wasn't always headed for
the world of high fashion.

My father passed away
when I was quite young,

I was two years old.

And I had a lot going on with my childhood

that distracted me from my academic work.

So, when I was in school,
I just rebelled against everything.

Imagine your worst student in the class,

worst student in the year
and then the worst in the school.

That was me, I was the devil child.

When I was in school
I was always really good at PE,

so, I went to start boxing
and then midway through starting boxing,

I was like, let me try hair and beauty,
see how that goes.

Makeup's always made me feel empowered.

I actually couldn't, hand on heart,

picture myself doing anything else
but makeup.

-How you're getting on, Shanice?
-I'm getting on well.

Do you hope to do more than one model?

-Yeah.
-Do you want to prove that you can?

-She'll be out the chair in 10 minutes.
-You reckon? If I stop talking?

-Alright, I'll catch up with you in a bit.
-See ya.

[Stacey] One MUA who has experience
at Fashion Week as an assistant is Berny.

This is not new to me whatsoever.

I've actually done Fashion Week before

so I'm familiar with
how it works backstage.

You should be a dab hand at this,
from what I've heard.

Thank you.
[laughs]

You should have this nailed.
Ophelia, we have Alana.

-Hi. Alana. Nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you, take a seat please.

How are you today?

-Stressed out?
-Yeah.

That's Fashion Week for you. [laughs]

Just close your eyes for me.

Oh, sorry, no moisturser
and I am allergic to foundation.

-These are just concealers. Is that okay?
-No.

Okay, let me just go talk to Dom.

My model said she's allergic to concealer,
foundation...

She doesn't wanna put on
the concealer.

That's fine. I've got a substitute
in my bag.

-Thank you.
-[Dominic] No worries.

I'll go follow him.

[tense music playing]

[Stacey] While some MUAs
are working away on their looks...

I wanna get the shade on but intensify
the colour a little bit more.

You just need to... hurry up. Get a move on.

...others are only just meeting
their models.

-[Eve laughs]
-I've rushed over from another show

-so I'm late.
-[Eve] That's fine.

I was a bit nerved
you weren't going to turn up.

Hi, I'm Keziah.

Right, you've got one hour
before we need all the models ready.

Oh, hello beautiful lady, take a seat.

[Stacey] Hannah's model has just arrived,
but with the deadline fast approaching,

James is still waiting.

I'm just getting a kit together
because if my model's not here,

I might have to run literally as far as
the catwalk and just prep her as I go.

Berny, you've had an hour to do this look.

I was expecting you
to bash this out in 20 minutes.

-What's been the hold up?
-I had a few difficulties with the skin,

-I think that's what I struggled with.
-Why?

And the glitter. I think my model
has acne prone skin,

so it was just a matter of covering
small areas and making it... yeah.

Okay.

He's called out in front of the model
that the model has bad skin

and... [groans]

Oh God, that's just mortifying.
You can't do that.

[Dominic] Brandon!
Oh my word, that highlight?

-Yeah?
-It looks amazing!

[Brandon laughs]

You're good to go.

I'm really loving what I'm seeing.

The eye looks great,

the skin looks flawless,
he's really delivered great makeup.

[Shanice] Look that way for me.
And the other way.

I think I'm done.

-Can I put you in hair?
-I would love to go.

-Great.
-[Shanice] She's gone into hair

and I'm waiting to be told
whether I'm gonna do another or not.

I'm buzzing. I just wanna do more models.

I wanna get everyone done.

Make-up has a hold.

I've got a little girl, Darcy,
who is almost one.

I just love her so much.
She's my heart and soul.

I've literally fitted makeup looks
around washing bottles, doing washing,

changing nappies, any time that I can get.

I have to keep telling myself
in this competition I am not "mum."

I'm Shanice, I'm the makeup artist

and I have got a goal in sight
that I'm going for

that will not only change my life,
but Darcy's as well.

This is what I'm meant to do.

[Stacey] As key artist,
Dom has to sign off every look.

And he's spotted a problem
with Shanice's efforts.

The issue is I never got a chance
to see the makeup

before she got into hair
and I'm not particularly happy with it.

Hi, sorry...

-There's a slight issue with your makeup.
-Okay.

It's too neat.
It's too nice, it's too pretty

and what we need to do
is mess it up a bit.

What I need you to do is to bring
some products to start blurring it out.

-Mixing it up.
-I'm gonna take you to the model.

This is my perfectionist side.
I can't let go.

You have to be an imperfectionist, okay?

So...

Bring that down.

[Dominic] Bring it down a bit more.
So, a few extra bits of glitter.

-When you're ready...
-But other than that?

-Other than that, I'll have a look after.
-Okay.

Hi, nice to see you.
I'm good, how are you?

[Stacey] With 20 minutes to go
until the show starts...

[Kesia] Close your eyes.

...the audience are arriving.

I've got loads to do
in a very little amount of time.

Just pick a few bits off from here.
Like, I'm gonna move your hand there.

Pick it off from around there, okay?
Be quick.

Hurry up, quicker, bigger brush,
buff it on, just get it on, boom.

How long do we have until the finish?

You have 15 minutes.
I want this done in 10.

-I'll get it done.
-[Dominic] Right, there we go.

-Give me skin, baby!
-All right!

[Dominic] Give me skin.

I've done something right.

It's been nearly an hour and a half
since Shanice started work on her model.

You've given it a good go.

You don't like it?

I'm not happy with the shape. I feel like
it's looking a bit like a bat wing.

-Okay.
-So, we need to get it fixed.

So, what I'm gonna do
is pass her over to one of my team

-who's gonna sort it out.
-Okay.

[Stacey] After a wait of almost two hours,
James finally has his assigned model.

[sighs] I'm really sorry,
you've got about eight minutes to do this.

Get it on, shout if you need help, okay?

-Perfect, thank you.
-I have faith.

Hello. How are you?

So, we have 8 minutes in
the makeup chair.

Brandon... Less of a colour, more of a hue,
so tone that temple down there.

[Stacey] Brandon's good work
has been rewarded with another look.

All girls in lineup, please!

-[woman] They're being called.
-Okay, you're done.

-[woman 2] We have to go.
-[Berny] Model's finished.

-Wonderful, go do something.
-Cool.

Right, guys, we need all the models ready
so, get a move on, hurry up.

[Henry] I need all girls in first look.

I think it's too much on the top.
It's more about... [Dom imitates spray]

And less of a... [imitates pop]

-[man] We need you to go.
-[Jake] Give me 2 seconds.

-[man] Makeup's not finished.
-Jake, don't finish what you're doing.

I'll come to the hair section.
You go, babes.

You go to hair.

-You doing the other side?
-[Keziah] Yeah.

Cool. Okay. Great, great, great.

-Go, running.
-Thank you so much.

[Henry] I need the girls in lineup!

[James] Time's up.
She's finished in makeup.

We're ready.

[Stacey] Just moments
before our models hit the runway,

Val's arrived and has a front row seat
to inspect the MUAs' work.

Brandon, grab a set bag 'cause I'm gonna
have you up at the top with me.

Dom has asked me to be by his side,
so, definitely a win-win situation.

[Dominic] Gorge!

-[woman] Show's starting.
-They're starting!

[funky beat playing]

[Stacey] The show's gone down a storm
but the jury's still out for the MUAs.

[James] High five, well done.

That was good.

Oh my God, Val.

That was amazing.

Thank you all so much. Thank you.

The MUAs did great.

However,
I do wanna see those makeups up close,

and really think it through
before I make any decisions.

[Stacey] At Glow Up HQ...

Oh, we're home.

...the judges have to decide
who performed best at London Fashion Week,

and which two MUAs least impressed
and will begin today's creative brief

in the Face Off chairs.

[Dominic] Brandon, he did a great job.

You can tell there's a level of confidence
in the person that's done that look.

[Dominic] Following on, we have Shanice.

I just felt that she was putting it
on almost too tightly.

I had to take a model out of her chair

and give it to one of my professional team
to try and save it.

It's not good enough.

[Dominic] James. He didn't get his model
until eight minutes before the show,

and he just slapped it right on.

It looks a bit bruise-y,
and we wanted boujee.

You have to be able to do
the most incredible makeup

that would normally take you 40 minutes,
in five.

Berny got his model quite early,

and an hour later,
he was still on his model.

[Val] It looks like he did the makeup
in five minutes.

I think there's one or two
that couldn't really hack the environment

that we put them in.

[tense electronic music]

Okay.

Find your chairs nice and quickly, please.

[Stacey] If an MUA's name
is on one of the two red chairs,

they're heading for
the Face Off elimination

at the end of the day.

[Brandon] Oh God!

[cymbal crashing]

Oh my goodness.

[music intensifies]

[Ophelia] Oh, God.

[Eve] It's me?

Oh!

[Stacey] There is still one way to escape
the Face Off:

Knock the judges' socks off
in today's brief

and hope another MUA underperforms.

[whispering] Berny. You alright?

Yeah.

So, Shanice, Berny,
unfortunately you've found yourselves

in our Face Off chairs.

This of course means

that you have 15 minutes
less than the others

to execute today's creative brief.

Fashion show makeup
often references iconic looks or muses,

so for today's creative brief,
we would like you to create a look

that is representing
your own personal icon.

They could be famous, fictional, fantasy
or someone you know.

So, bring in the models!

[upbeat electronic music]

[upbeat music playing]

Brandon, yesterday you impressed us
so much with both your looks

and your professionalism,

so your reward is,
either stick with the model

that you've been allocated
or choose someone else's model.

-[Brandon] I feel like the pressure's on.
-[laughter]

Just close your eyes for me.

I'm gonna be really horrible
and I'm gonna nick you.

[laughter]

[Stacey] That's bold.
I didn't think you'd swap.

The icon that I've gone with,
I think it will just be best achieved on

my model's skin tone.

Cool. So you've got two and half hours
to nail this creative brief.

Shanice, Berny, I will let you know
when you can start.

The rest of the MUAs, time starts now.

[fast tempo beat]

-Let's go, honey.
-[James] Let's go, girl.

My look today is Grace Jones.
I've got to make sure now

that I nail this one
because the pressure is on.

I am doing a look
inspired by Marilyn Manson.

He helped me to express emotions
I didn't necessarily understand.

Shanice, you seem on good form, given that
you're sat in one of the Face Off chairs.

I'm calm.
I don't plan on staying in the red chair.

-Yeah.
-Okay.

[Stacey] Keziah is also basing her look
on a music legend.

I'm gonna turn you into
this David Bowie-inspired thing.

It's gonna look kind of like androgynous.

But she isn't the only one

channelling the Starman.

I am feeling relieved
that I'm not in the Face Off chairs.

But no one is safe.
And Berny and Shanice are big competitors,

so, gotta smash this brief.

Just so you know,

I have a twitch in my neck.
It's been there my whole life.

I have a twitch
that is quite physically noticeable

in my neck and in my eye.
When I was younger,

I went to boarding school for six years
and during those crisis ages of 12 to 18,

it was a really easy target for bullies.

When I was 18, I went to a consultant,
and a neurologist was able to certify

that it was a form of Tourette's syndrome.

It sort of manifests itself

when I'm pretty much anxious and stressed.

I'm not ashamed by it.
I have gotten a lot more comfortable

and happier in myself,
seeing the twitch as part of my identity.

I've learnt to kind of take pride in it.

It's never really been a big enough factor

to stop me from doing anything
with my life.

I'm sorry, the quiff is lovely.

I'm just gonna brush out any product,
it's got to go.

James is diving right in on the hair.

[Val] I'd be leaving that hair till last.

[Stacey] Having failed to impress
in last week's creative brief,

Eve's hoping for some help from
an ancient Chinese legend.

My icon is Mulan.

It's gonna be like the dragon mask
'cause, in Chinese culture,

it represents strength.

[Stacey] To achieve a 3D feel,

she's working with
an unconventional product.

Is she using tissue paper?
No look, it's malleable.

Plasticine or something.

I'm using Play-Doh to sculpt out
the little spikes,

which is time consuming, and then
I'm gonna attach them to the face.

Bish, bash, bosh.

James is also taking a risk
on a time-consuming technique.

-James is now putting on a...
-Ah! It's a bald cap.

Now it's going over your ears.
You might hear me after a few minutes.

[Henry] He's doubled
the size of his canvas.

Okay, MUAs, 15 minutes has passed.

Shanice, Berny, you're good to go.

-[Berny] Okay.
-[Shanice] This is Jimi Hendrix's guitar.

You wouldn't really get Jimi
unless I included his guitar.

If you're painting on a guitar,
paint the guitar, don't stencil it.

It's not a difficult shape to do.

Speak for yourself.

[laughter]

I just wanna cover the brow

so I can recreate my own features.

[Stacey] Also in a Face Off chair,
Berny's iconic look

draws on 1990s New York club culture.

I'm not gonna do any graphic liner anymore

because that is what's kind of worrying me
a little bit.

While the other MUAs
have drawn inspiration from famous figures

Jake has gone for someone closer to home.

My icon's my sister.
My sister's into all that microblading,

perfect, crisp, so I wanna emulate that.

[chuckles]

Makeup done.

I'm not happy with that brow cover,
so I'm just gonna quickly redo it.

[Dom sighs] He's taken off an eyebrow
and starting again.

An unconfident makeup artist
would just keep working at it

hoping that things are gonna turn out well

but he knows that this is a losing battle.

But for somebody who's in
the Face Off chairs

because of not being able to stick to
a time deadline,

he's looking dangerously like
he's in the same position again.

I'm such a panicker,

-but I'm trying to hold it together.
-You're doing good.

Pièce de résistance.

[Stacey] Hannah has started work
on crafting the broken china effect

she needs for her look.

The purpose of using clay
is to get a cracked texture on the skin.

I have got a hairdryer with me,
so I'm gonna be plugging that in

and blasting some hot air.

-[Dominic] What do we call this?
-[Henry] Mud.

Poo.

[laughter]

No, this is fuller's earth, isn't it?
And I predict that, you know,

this will dry, it will crack.

So it will be interesting

what she then does
to make it more interesting

and really less like poo.

[Stacey] For her Mulan-inspired
dragon mask,

Eve is applying the scales
with latex glue.

Eve, I've never really seen
anything like this before.

Can I touch this? I won't poke.

As long as it's not too hard...

-[Stacey] What is it?
-It's Play-Doh.

[Stacey] Oh, it is! It looks amazing.

It's not like a clay,
so it's a bit more foamy,

so it will last on the face
and won't be too heavy.

The darker bits right here is basically
more of an extreme contour.

Just really, just carve out her face.

[Stacey] Ophelia's icon is HR Giger.

Best known for his work
on the film, Alien.

[Ophelia] Giger's visions are insane.

So, I just thought if you were taken
onto a spaceship by aliens

and they do experiments on you...

MUAs, an hour has passed,
you've got an hour and a half left.

[music quickens]

[Ophelia sighs] Okay.

Alright, this took me an hour to do.
I need to get a move on.

That doesn't particularly look like

-an hour-long eye.
-[Dominic] No.

This could be a real fall from grace.

[Stacey] Despite being yesterday's
best performer,

Brandon could still end up
in the Face Off elimination,

if his "Grace Jones" look
fails to impress.

-[Keziah] Open your mouth slightly for me.
-Keziah is a wonderful makeup artist

but I'm not feeling the white mask.

The white jawline... I don't know what
she's trying to say with it.

[Keziah] Have you seen
that one behind you?

It's like bright blue.

-[Henry] It's like a Smurf without a hat.
-[laughter]

He has given himself a huge challenge.
I just want him to get a move on.

[Stacey] Like Hannah,
Brandon is also using clay.

[Brandon] With the hair I've put a bit
of fuller's earth just to start cracking

and I want the idea that,
when she was in a rough space,

she's always managed to break through,
so that cracking will symbolise that.

[Hannah] I'm just going around
some of the darker areas

and just emphasising the cracks
a little bit more

with this greyish blue that I've got.

Just close again for me.

[Shanice] This is gonna be
quite psychedelic.

I'm gonna do a lava lamp
coming up the center of your face.

I'm looking for liquid gold.

I want it to look like wet gold.

[Keziah] Are you trying to make
gold tears?

I use exactly that. Make it really wet
and then press it on there,

and let it drip.
And obviously it's on my hand,

-but it will drip if you...
-Should I start at the bottom of the drip

so the most product's here and pull it up?

[both] Top and let it drip.

-So it's like natural tears.
-Yes, okay.

[Ophelia] This is a technique
that I was using last time,

which is makeup remover on a cotton bud.

So, I'm creating negative space

and I really think that the lines I create
bring the whole look together.

[judges] Oh!

That's amazing.

Plasticine porcupine forehead realness.

MUAs, just under half an hour left.

[fast dance music intensifies]

[James] I need to finish the other eye.

So, let's get cracking on that.

I'm just putting some kind of

editorial streaks on her neck.

I'm just building up
some kind of yellow tones.

Just to create the eyeball.

Look how the eyes are appearing.
They look like they're open

but she's painted the eyeball
on top of the lid.

It's so clever.

I am about to do the biggest feature
which is the red stripe.

-Do you think he's on "Blow Up"?
-[laughter]

It's drying very slowly.
[laughs]

MUAs, you have 15 minutes left.

Let's get creepy.

[Henry] Oh!

I actually think this is something
really quite interesting now.

I'm not too worried about bits
that are falling off

because that adds to the look
of this rotting decaying figure.

[Shanice laughs]

Oh, God.

Do you reckon it looks more Bowie
with this or...?

[Keziah] James, my fellow Bowie,
do you think this looks too clown-y

with the wig?

What's it look like without it?

Good question.

[James] I personally like the hair,

-but you know, your call.
-[Keziah] Can I spray your hair orange?

Last five minutes.
You've got five minutes left.

Five minutes.

This isn't working.

[James] It's go, go, go, right now.
Absolutely.

[dramatic vocal music]

[Berny] Just face this way.

[Ophelia] It has to work.

Okay, I like the orange.

Please open your mouth for me now a bit.
Thank you.

MUAs, your time is up.

Hair dryers off. Brushes down.

You can take your models round the corner
to be photographed.

-[shutter clicking]
-[uptempo electronic beat]

We're gonna start with Ophelia.

[Ophelia] So my look is based on HR Giger.

I think this is stunning.

You really brought out everything
that makes his artwork

instantly recognisable.

[Val] I think
you are an incredible artist.

But I felt like you were doing
the same technique that you did last week,

where you were doing negative spacing.

When are we gonna see something new
from you?

Okay.

Eve.

For my icon I chose Mulan.

The dragon represents strength

and power in the Chinese culture
so I really wanted to get that across.

What have you used to create
the 3D texture on the forehead?

-Play-Doh.
-Incredible.

-[Eve] I'm not high tech. I don't...
-[laughter]

[Henry] I think it's really smart.
I'm obsessed. I think it's amazing.

Really? Thank you.

This look is so original.
I've not seen anything like this before.

I have to give you a ding dong!

Absolutely marvelous!

Thank you.

[applause]

It's amazing.

Shanice.

So the person behind my look
is Jimi Hendrix.

I don't think you've pulled it off.

You spent so much time on that guitar,

that was where your focus
of the makeup was.

It doesn't feel very technical.

Okay.

I wouldn't expect anyone in this room

to stencil something
as simple as a guitar shape.

Okay, Jake.

So I tried to do mood boards
on Pam Anderson, Anna Nicole,

all the people that I do look up to
and love.

But there's no one in my life
like my sister.

So on the eye
we've got like gold tears.

They represent my sister's emotions.

I think the most exciting thing
about this nice makeup

is the gold tears. I just think
you could've done better.

Don't think "nice" is a compliment.

Making a liquid gold
and dripping down the face

does not a makeup artist make.

That's simple.

Okay, Berny.

[Berny] When I was trying
to get inspiration for this look,

I thought, club kids in the club scene
in New York.

When I first look at this, I think
that there's some issues around

the blending and the mixes of colour
that make it feel a bit like face painting

at a kids party.

[Val] You didn't prepare your canvas.

You needed to get your white right first.

Because it wasn't all completely matte
all over,

you were having trouble
with some of your blending.

However, I do think overall...

it's a pretty makeup.

Hannah. Would you like to come forward?

[Hannah] The icon that inspired me
was Marilyn Manson.

He's quite scary and that fascinated me,

so I wanted it to be
a little bit horror as well.

[Val] You're a smart cookie.

And you've worked your veins
in amongst the cracked clay.

I just thought it was
absolutely marvelous!

-Thank you.
-Amazing!

[applause]

Brandon,
would you like to come forward please?

[Brandon] My icon was Grace Jones.

I wanted to incorporate
some classic elements of Grace Jones,

like the strong, the powerful, the bold.

I think there's some
really beautiful elements to this

in the face.

But I think when we're coming
straight from

the previous look and the use of clay
and that look,

this looks a bit like
she's fallen head first into a cow pat

and then it's kind of combed back.

Yeah.

[gasps]

[Dominic] The one person I don't see
is Grace Jones.

I just think if you think about power,

is that soft and blended
and a bit sort of floaty-like.

-[Dominic] Is it?
-No.

So then why did you do it?
That's my worry.

You're saying something
but it's not translating.

Keziah.

[Keziah] I chose David Bowie for my icon.

[Val] The white
is not really saying anything.

Perhaps if this was a lot more angular,

it might've told a bigger story.

I actually love it.
I love these rich reds

and the golds across the eye.
I really love this combination.

Thank you.

Okay, James.

[James] So, my icon is David Bowie.

He transformed the world of music
as an art form

because that's when I feel makeup
became revolutionary as well.

Wow, I think this is
absolutely insanely incredible.

It's not pastiche, it's not too direct,

it's so creative.

[Val] Last week you impressed me
with your incredible work.

And then today you come out
and you give me this.

When I come to the lightning bolt,
the way you put the stipple in there,

it's made it look like there is a light
on that eye.

And for that I give you
the biggest ding dong ever!

Absolutely marvelous!

[applause]

Thank you guys so much.

[Val] Thank you.

Ding dong!

If you'd like to go next door,
myself, Val and Henry will discuss

who will be in the Face Off.

[dramatic music playing]

He's failed with the brief.
The brief was to choose an icon

and create a look that was representative
of that icon.

[Val] The shading around the guitar...

I mean, that's not shading,
that's just like mucky marks.

He hasn't done the best job
to get out of the Face Off elimination

but other people might've done worse
and actually pushed him out.

There is a brow application skill,
but tears do not take technicality.

-They are literally a free random drop.
-Yeah.

[tense piano music playing]

Shanice, Berny, according to the judges
you were the least impressive yesterday.

The question now is, have you done enough

to find yourselves out of those seats
and safe for another week.

Shanice.

Technically you didn't show us enough,

which means that you did not
beat the seat.

You will be the first

that goes into this week's
Face Off elimination.

Okay.

Berny, you failed to impress us.

However, lucky for you,
there was another look

that was more disappointing
than yours.

This look lacked cohesion
and was generally cluttered.

The second MUA heading into
the Face Off elimination will be...

Brandon.

Shanice, Brandon, I'm so sorry.
Please say your goodbyes

because one of you won't return.

I don't wanna hug too much but...
Love you all.

I would be lying to you if I said
that I wasn't feeling the pressure.

Val and Dom are disappointed in me
and that's not what I want,

so, I've gotta prove myself.

Bye guys.

I'm gutted to be in
the Face Off elimination

but I'm trying to keep positive
and go in with a clear head space.

The fight isn't yet over.

[Eve] Come on, you can do it.

[cheering]

[MUAs] Come on!

To create a level playing field,

the MUAs will Face Off
over a pair of identical twins.

Fashion is about trends

and one trend taking the makeup world
by storm is freckles.

For your Face Off today,
we will be looking to see

how quickly you can apply freckles

whilst making them look natural
and effortless.

You'll have 10 minutes
to complete this look.

[Dominic] Natural looking freckles
can be created using different products

and techniques.

An eyebrow pencil,
a liquid liner or even a spooly

can all have the desired effect.
I would use a spooly.

Simply create a freckle-coloured liquid

and use the spooly to flick it
across the face.

Once the MUAs have applied the freckles
they then need to work quickly

to fade them out by simply tapping
with a finger or a sponge.

I'm looking for obvious
but natural-looking freckles.

[Stacy] Best of luck, both of you.

You've got ten minutes

and your time starts now.

[fast tempo electronic music]

[Brandon] Just close your eyes for me.

[Stacey] That's five minutes gone.

[Val] It's interesting seeing
the two different techniques.

Brandon's technique
has really impressed me.

I love the way he just went in there,
grabbed the bull by the horns

and started stippling.

Shanice: She was just
doing her pencil randomly

but it was quite a light colour.

She's gonna have to use
three to five different pencils

to create something that's quite natural.

So far I've only seen her use one pencil.

[Dominic] I worry for Brandon,
'cause he may end up doing too much

'cause he's got there now.

If he's right, he should stop
and stand back.

One minute left. Last minute.

[Stacey] Time's up.
Please put your tools down.

[pensive music playing]

[Brandon sighs]

[Dominic sighs]
I think we need a conflab.

-Shall we?
-Yes.

[Brandon laughs]

There is one makeup that is far superior
for the simple fact they are believable

-and yet it still looks natural.
-[Dominic] The other makeup,

they've just kind of done freckles
the way you kind of get taught at school.

Well, you don't get taught
freckles at school.

[laughs]

-[Val] We've got an out-and-out winner.
-[Dominic] Yeah.

[dramatic music playing]

Okay. [sighs]
So, judges you're in agreement?

-Yeah?
-[Val] Yes, we are.

[Val] Shanice...

Your freckle attempt was quite timid.

Brandon...

Your technique was surprising.

Shanice...

You'll be packing your kit
and going home.

[Dominic] Brandon,
we'll see you again next week.

It's just not my time.
I have learnt more in the last two weeks

than I have in the whole eight years
that I've been doing makeup.

This is just the start for me now.

I'm even more motivated to make it
in this industry.

Oh, darling. Bye-bye.

This is why we have the Face Off.
It's really about working under pressure,

knowing your tools, knowing your products,
knowing how they're gonna work.

Hey!

[cheering]

[Hannah] Brandon!

[applause]

I've never been so happy
to see your faces.

I mean, I've actually managed
to escape that

and I can't tell you how relieved I am.

I'm just so sad for Shanice. [crying]

[Brandon] I'm so glad that my story
doesn't end here.

I'm so glad that I get to continue
and I get to prove myself.

Congratulations, you've made it through
to week three.

I know what's coming next week.

It's going to be amazing.
Will we make a move?

Yeah, let's go home.

[end theme music playing]
