Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 1 - Ad Campaign - full transcript

10 aspiring make-up artists compete as the hit BBC Three series returns. First up, they are asked to work on an advertising campaign for JD Sports. The creative brief is based on their identity.

[theme music playing]

[Stacey] From bedrooms across the country,

thousands of budding makeup artists

sent in their fiercest glow ups

and ten of the best have been selected.

This is massive.

Each week they'll tackle
a professional assignment...

It's going to be tough
but that's the real world.

-Get it on, boom, boom, boom.
-[voice] Woo!

...judged by some of the biggest names
in the business...

Okay, I need the girls in lineup.

...before heading back to Glow Up HQ...

-Bring in the models.
-The pressure is on.

...to slay the all-important
creative brief.

I want my mind blown.

Good golly!

We want extreme creativity,
it's absolutely crucial.

[gasping]

Because we're looking for
the next makeup star.

The two who fail to deliver...

[wincing]

will go head to head in a Face Off.

You're only as good as your last look.

The loser goes home,

until just one remains to land a contract,

assisting some of
the world's biggest makeup artists.

The winner of Glow Up is...

It's time to Glow Up.

[sparks]

[melodic theme playing]

North London,
home to Glow Up headquarters.

For the next eight weeks
this state-of-the-art studio...

-[gasping] Oh, my God!
-[laughter]

...will be a home from home
for this year's aspiring makeup artists

or "MUAs" for short.

[singing] This is amazing!

Deciding once again who's on point
and who's fallen short

are two makeup industry giants.

Dominic Skinner has created
global campaigns for MAC Cosmetics.

Last year the MUAs came in
and they really blew us away,

so this year, I wanna see techniques
that are just supreme.

I want that bar raised higher.

Val Garland has created looks
for the biggest names in music,

fashion and design.

Average work just won't cut it for me.

I want to see creativity.

I want to see art.

[upbeat electronic theme playing]

Welcome, everyone! Hi!

Come on over.

-[MUAs] Oh, hello! Hi!
-[laughter]

So, ten MUAs stand before us,

but of course
only one of you will be crowned

Britain's next makeup star.

It's so exciting.

Our remarkable, brilliant judges
will be making that decision.

I give you the iconic Val Garland

and our own creative king:
It's Dominic Skinner.

-[applause]
-[cheering]

For your first professional assignment,

you have been booked to do the makeup
on JD's Christmas campaign.

-[gasping]
-[laughter]

[funky music playing]

[Stacey] Ad campaigns
demand perfect technique

and makeup that complements the clothes

without overpowering them.

All while looking good billboard-sized.

And with over 700 stores in 19 countries,

clients don't come much bigger than this.

It's the clients vision,

so, if they want a red lip,
they want a red lip.

If they say "no foundation"
they mean "no foundation."

If your work is good enough,
it will be seen by millions globally.

However, if you don't come up to scratch,
it won't be featured.

So, don't let us down.

No pressure.

Cool. So that's your first assignment.

Get your kits together and get moving.

-[cheering]
-[laughter]

[woman] I've got nerves
but I feel like they're good nerves.

I've got like a little fire up my bum.

[upbeat electronic music]

[Stacey] As well as impressing Val
and Dominic,

each week, the MUAs will also face
a guest judge.

Zara? Can we also maybe just brush up
his brows as well?

This week it's makeup artist Min Sandhu.

[Min] I'm leading the team today
for JD on makeup.

Working with sports brands
is a big chunk of what I do.

[Stacey] She's created ad campaigns
for the likes of Nike,

Puma

and Chanel.

Min, how are you?

-Really lovely to see you.
-How are you doing?

Hello! Guys, come round.

For this campaign
we need to deliver two group shots.

So we're gonna split into two groups.

First group, you will be adding flashes
and accents of Christmas gold.

The second group, you'll be doing the same
but with seasonal silver.

Flawless skin
is absolutely crucial today, guys.

It has to underpin each
and every one of your looks.

Of course you're working together
on the group shot

but actually you're judged individually.

And whoever impresses the most,
you'll get the opportunity to assist Min

when you're doing additional photos
for the campaign.

I need my models to be ready on time,

so you will have 1 hour 30 minutes
to complete your look. Good luck guys.

-Thank you so much.
-[MUAs] Thank you.

Each MUA has been randomly assigned
a model.

How are you?

-Chilling, how are you?
-I'm good.

You ready to turn into a drag queen?
No, I'm joking.

You just sit there and look pretty,
that's all you've got to do.

The brand are looking for healthy,
fresh, glowing skin.

We have to remember

that this is a campaign
for sports clothing.

We can't let the makeup
be a distraction to that.

[woman] I really want to prep the skin
and make sure it's looking great.

He's got amazing skin anyway,
so I don't need that much.

Cleansing, moisturising, priming the skin
is absolutely essential.

You've got good skin and I'm jealous.
Look at me, I look like a drag queen.

I suggest they give that moisturiser
a really good massage into the skin.

It will really get the blood circulating
and give it a more plump-y feel.

Let's start with your skin then.

Are you okay with me using my fingers
to apply moisturiser? Cool.

[Min] They need to make skin
look like skin and not look like makeup.

I'm just living my life really.
I'm not stressed.

[Jake] It's definitely less nerve wracking

once you're actually doing something.
When you're just sitting,

thinking about the brief it's like...
[gasps]

but when you're actually doing it,
it's like "Yeah, this is alright."

From when I was about 13 to about 17,
I was not in a very nice place,

I wasn't happy at all.

I just wanted to be slim,
I wanted to be blond,

I wanted to be tanned.

I just wanted to be
the exact opposite of what I was, really.

I don't wanna say makeup changed my life,
"Oh my God this, oh my God that"...

It's just helped me emulate that person
that I know I am inside.

It's taken a long time to be like,

"This is you, this is the skin
you were given."

Now I feel happy
and feel like a little ray of sunshine.

I've got a little mantra.
Before I'm awake properly

I like to get myself to the mirror,
and I look in the mirror and I say:

-[clicks tongue]
-"You're talented and your brain is big."

Jake, how on earth do you work
with those nails? How do you do it?

I don't know. I think 'cause I've had 'em
for so long, I'm just used to having them.

I've never stabbed anyone yet.

[Stacey] Once the skin is perfect,

the teams can move on to the second part
of the brief,

adding accents of festive gold or silver.

I was thinking of doing kind of like
a navy contour of his eyes,

so I was gonna do a little more of
a dark eye feature for him.

[Stacey] Like James, the whole Silver team
are playing with colour.

I'm kind of using accents of purple.

I want it to look like he's holographic
under his skin.

I just want it to pop a little bit more
than what it actually is.

She's got amazing eyes anyway

so the colour should just enhance
that a little bit.

Hannah is not only planning to introduce
blue to her silver look,

she's playing with textures too.

I want to see if I can frost the eyebrows
to come in with the silver,

like a fashion Jack Frost.
[laughs]

Do you know what?
I could put it in your mustache as well.

Blue tash.

I'm gonna give her
a little bit of a burgundy lip.

[Ashley] I still wanna be in keeping
with the theme

but we wanna be a bit different.

I have never done a photo shoot before,

I've only really done on counter work.

[Ashley] I grew up
in the middle of nowhere next to Aberdeen.

There's not a lot going on.
I would sit in my room

and kind of do a lot more elaborate looks
because I had more time.

[Ashley] I think I only really got good
at makeup

when I moved to Glasgow.

[Ashley] I got the job on a makeup counter
and you've got to do it to a certain time

and you've got to turn up with nice makeup
because people are buying it off you.

Right now my dream job is
to just be part of a team on a big TV show

or a big movie.

[Ashley] I'm second-guessing my look now.

I feel like the eyes are pretty
but I'm kind of scared that

it's too full-on a makeup.

I've done a really strong eye
if you wanna have a look at it

and just see where I've gone.
I'm putting a strong blue colour

on my model.

Oh! [Ashley laughs]

That's cool. Alright, I feel better now.

-[Stacey] How're they getting on?
-[Min] I'm a bit worried

about how well the Silver group
actually understood the brief.

I feel like the brief was pretty clear.

You said it's about gold and silver
and skin, skin, skin.

[Min] I'm worried about these garish blues
and pinks.

I don't know if they're going to work.

[Stacey] The Silver group are using
off-brief colours and textures...

[James] Can you just close your eyes
for me?

...while the Gold group
are taking a more restrained approach.

This is gold. This whole look is gold.
Our brief was gold!

I'm applying some of the gold on her eyes
because it'll make them nice and blue.

Guys, we have five minutes left.

Girl, we're on fire together, you and me.

[Eve] Okay, great. Other side.

-[music intensifies]
-[Ophelia gasps]

The judges are here. The judges are here.

[ominous beat playing]

Alright guys, brushes down, time's up.

[groans]

Okay.

I think it went well,
I'm prepared for whatever comes my way.

-Can you sit down there for me, babe?
-Over here?

[Stacey] But it doesn't matter
what the MUAs think.

It's how their looks work on camera
that will decide whether they'll be used

in this sports fashion campaign.

If Val ripped me apart,
I think I'd still be like super thankful,

because it's Val Garland.

She could literally spit on me
and I'd be like, "Thanks so much."

That's it, hold that.

My first impression of the Gold group:
The standard's pretty high.

I love how all the skin looks beautiful.

It looks fresh, it looks healthy.

It's so on point with the brand as well.

For me, I think Ophelia nailed it.

She looks like the girl
that would wear that

and girls would aspire to be that.

Eve's is outstanding.

That lightning bolt at the side...
So well done.

I kind of really like Jake's.
I like the skin, I like the lip.

Yeah, her skin looks gorgeous.
I think it's really on-brand, actually.

And I love what Berny's done.

She looks stunning and the skin looks so...
I just want to stick my fingers in it...

-It just looks so beautiful.
-[Min] I know, it's so flawless.

-Let's look at the Silvers, shall we?
-Yeah.

[Min] Oh, gosh.

[laughing]

[Dominic] Shocking.
Hannah, I mean, it looks green.

[Val] I thought she was bleaching
his brows. I mean, what the hell is that?

When you put silver in someone's brows
it just makes them look like Santa Claus.

[Dominic] You have Shanice.
I'm disappointed.

The skin looks a bit flat.

-[Dominic] James.
-[Val] Why did he do blue?

[Val] Why? It's a silver section.

[Min] So, Ashley's model...

[Dominic] My biggest problem with this
is that all you see in the group

-is that pink lip.
-[Min] Yeah.

Brandon's model.

[Dominic] I think
he's created beautiful skin.

The adornment that's gone on top,

the silver accent,
is so basic and really uninspired.

[Min] I don't really think this group
have understood the brief.

I don't think it's gonna get used,
this shot.

We're gonna have to pull it out.

Yeah.

Hi!

-Hello!
-Hi!

-[Stacey] Here they are.
-Hi!

So, thank you guys
for all your hard work today.

Silver group. As a group, unfortunately,
you didn't quite hit the brief

and it wasn't really in line
with the brand's identity.

So, I have decided to drop that image
from the campaign.

Oh my God. Completely?

[Min] Yes.

Gold group, we really loved your looks
and we felt they worked

both individually and as a group.

[Dominic] Eve, your look really fitted
the brief well

and we also thought it was really fresh.

Berny, your skin was flawless
and that accent on the eye was incredible.

Ophelia, we loved how you conceptualised
your look,

and for me, I thought it was spot on.

The makeup artist

that has impressed us the most,

who will be going on to finish
the campaign with Min this evening...

is...

-Berny.
-Oh, my God.

[cheering and applause]

God, I can't believe that.

We have to go
because we've got work to do.

-We're gonna start right now.
-Let's go.

-[Stacey] Berny, well done.
-[Berny laughing] Thank you!

-[applause]
-[Val] Ding dong!

So, I just want you to concentrate here
where you see his pores.

This is a massive deal for me.

My work is gonna be plastered everywhere.
Like, it's really exciting.

If you just look up for me, real quick?

Just give that brow a little bit of brush.

-More up?
-Yes.

The second I heard my name be called
I was like, "Okay."

Like, I feel like this is literally
a dream of mine.

-Well done!
-Yay!

[Stacey] The next morning at Glow Up HQ,

as the hopefuls arrive
for today's creative brief,

the judges are in the studio,

deciding which two
least impressed yesterday.

-[Dominic] Hannah.
-[Val] Those brows.

I'm just incredibly disappointed.

-[Dominic] Next we have Shanice.
-[Val] It's the wrong colour.

The highlight just makes him look gray.

[Dominc] Brandon... Meh.
It's not really anything exciting.

He played very safe.

I'll follow that with James.

-[Val] When does blue become silver?
-I'd say this is more Saturday night glam

than it is sporty.

[tense electronic music playing]

[Stacey] Okay gang,
so you know how this works.

Just find your chair
and get yourself settled.

[Stacey] If an MUAs name
is on one of the two red chairs,

they're heading for
the Face Off elimination

at the end of the day.

[MUAs murmuring]

[cymbal crashes]

[Keziah gasping]

-[cymbal crashes]
-Oh, thank Christ! [laughs]

[Keziah] You alright? Don't worry,
you're good at this stuff.

[Stacey] There's only one way
to escape the Face Off.

Impress the judges in the next brief
and hope another MUA underachieves.

It's OK. You got it.

Okay, so, Hannah, James,
you've found yourself

in our Face Off chairs.

Hannah, your silver brow wasn't executed
very well, I'm afraid,

and unfortunately, James,
the blue was never in the brief.

This also means
that you'll have 15 minutes less

than the other MUAs to complete your look.

Brandon, Shanice,
you so had a lucky escape.

Let this be a lesson to you all.

Next time you're given a brief,

stick to it.

James, Hannah, it's up to you now
to prove you deserve to stay here.

Yesterday,
you expressed a brand's identity.

Today, we want to see your identity.

We want you to create this look
on yourself.

It could reflect your personal journey,
your family history

or who you are as a makeup artist,

but it has to tell us something about
what makes you, you.

Hannah, James, I'll let you know
when you can start.

The rest of you,
you have two and a half hours

and your time starts now.

[fast tempo electronic music]

[Stacey] The MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for today's brief

and Glow Up HQ comes stocked
with any accessories they need.

There's no yellow spray,
there's no yellow flowers,

so, I'm hoping I can make something
out of these petals.

[James screams]

I'm spraying my inside of my nail.

I'm just gluing my brows down
because I wanna paint over them.

Oh, she's removing her eyebrow.

James.

-Hey, Stace.
-How are you?

Do you know what? I feel like
this is like a kick up the back arse.

Do you know what? So many times
you're in the red chair,

panic, panic, panic,
but actually then you smash it

and somebody else has to take your space.

Yeah, I really want it.

I'm going to make sure
that I get out of this chair.

I think no one's safe at this point.

Right, that's our 15 minutes up.
You're good to go.

Hannah, James, best of luck.

[music quickens]

[Hannah] I am gonna be using some putty

to change the bone structure
around my cheekbones and my forehead.

Now what's Berny doing?
He's just drawn a line.

He's just drawn a line.

So, I'm just trying to get
a nice perfect square.

[Stacey] His look is inspired by a mirror
from his childhood

which he'd gaze into,
dreaming of a creative future.

The idea of this look
is to try and make sure

it's kind of a bit symmetrical.

But I've got lovely big cheeks
so it looks like curves.

So, I'm just trying to even it out
as much as I can,

so I can get it perfect.

MUAs, you've had half an hour.
You've got two hours left.

[gasps]

How have we already had half an hour?

Time flies.

Is Hannah doing prosthetics?

[Val] Are you mad?

She's 15 minutes behind everybody else,
and boom.

-[Dominic] That could look amazing.
-[Min] Yeah.

- 'Cause I love me some sci-fi.
-[Min] Me too.

[Hannah] Empty Avian is like a persona
that I created where I could step into it

whenever I wanted to feel a bit braver
or I wanted to feel like

I could handle any situation.

Hopefully they'll get to see
my personality.

I'm in the sixth gear,
so I'm just going straight right now

at that speed, staying focused.

[Stacey] James's look is inspired
not just by his native Ireland

but also the northern lights
of the Arctic Circle.

I lived in Lapland for just under
six months when I was 18

and it really was the start
of a creative journey for me,

that's brought me even to this point now.

It looks a little bit like when my niece
tries to draw buildings

but it'll get better.
[laughs]

This is me, baring all.

[Stacey] Shanice is executing
a split-faced look,

reflecting her confident,
glamorous personality

and the more vulnerable side
that lies beneath.

The black eye is a metaphor.

It's speaking to harder times in my life
where I feel like I have been punched.

[music ticking to steady beat]

MUAs, you have one hour.

What? Okay we're gonna have
dripping silver there,

that's all the sand,
so maybe I should do that first.

Yeah, sounds like a good idea.

Eve is going all "festival."

[Min] I feel like I've seen this
a million times on Instagram.

This looks wicked.
Talk me through what it is, what it means.

So, a lot of it here is gonna be
to do with my past.

If you picture your worst kid
in your school, I was literally that kid.

I was always getting into trouble,

-always fighting.
-I can't imagine that.

I got excluded about 117 times.

I was actually told
I was never gonna be successful.

How you getting on, Ophelia?

-Yours is looking badass.
-Oh, God!

You've already got base colour done!

I hope this works.

I am doing the details now
with a interesting technique

that I think might work.

It's basically removing makeup

to create like a graphic kind of thing.

So, yeah!

What's he written?

"Help."

[laughs]

Does that read right to you? "Bad boy"?

-No.
-[Brandon] Is it opposite way around?

It's the wrong way around.
It should be "bad boy."

You have to write it backwards to you.

Oh, he's taken off his lettering.

I'm gonna wipe it off,

sit and think about it
and then go back to it.

MUAs, you have half an hour.

Oh! A hand may be going in.
A hand is going in.

-A hand has just gone in.
-[Dominic] Oh!

Here we go.
It's all going to blur into one.

That didn't work and you can't go back
and do it again.

-[Min and Dominic] Oh!
-It's one chance only.

Right.

Okay.

Own goal!

I'm just saving time on drawing hands
by just drawing on my hand

and slapping it on my face.

What is this on his cheeks?

Is it a sea urchin?

-Is it testicles?
-Mm.

-[Dominic] Possibly.
-[Val] Possibly testicles.

Maybe an avocado?

-It could be an avocado.
-[laughing]

[gasps] Avocado, testicles...

What would you prefer?

I know what I'd prefer.

I love an avocado.

-I'm with you on that.
-[laughing]

I'm from countryside Ireland
and I grew up in a big green open scape.

There's a lot of butterflies,
caterpillars,

and I wanted to always encapsulate

some kind of insect reference
to where I'm from.

[Jake] Don't know what I'm gonna do
for the yellow petals.

-What do you need that's yellow?
-[Jake] Yellow petals.

Jake, have you had a proper look
around the room?

There's yellow flowers.

-Are you shitting me?
-Come.

[Jake laughing] Oh!

What a dopey little bitch.

Jake is underwhelming.

He needs to focus. This is a competition.

There is a huge prize at the end of this.

This body oil is literally my entire life.

[spritzing]

Oh!

You alright?

You're not allowed to talk to me
really, are ya?

Focus.

God!

I feel I'm going to run out of time.
[screams]

Okay gang, 15 minutes left.

[dramatic vocalized music]

I'm not adding any more to this.
I'm going a bit over the top.

I have to stay very still now.

I'm slightly worried, I think,

because I don't have quite as much as
everyone else does.

Time's up.

Brushes down. Take yourselves
next door to be photographed.

Keziah.

[Dominic] Please come forward.

I am dying to know

the story behind this image.

[Keziah] My look is based on the idea
of a phoenix rising from the ashes.

When I was younger, I didn't really have
much confidence.

I was quite like shy and reserved

and it's kind of about how makeup
and creativity gave me that voice.

Your blending is impeccable.

[Min] I absolutely love it.

-I love the story and I love this image.
-[Keziah laughs]

The symmetry... It's mathematical.

Thank you.

[Val] The gold went on
and I was like, "Yes."

I wished you'd stopped there,
but it's all in there.

Well done.

Thank you.

Shanice.

Shanice, I'm not a fan
of a full-on face beat

but that right side there,
I'm absolutely in love with.

[Dominic] You need to be careful
of your technicality

when it comes to lettering.

Your "Y"s...

They're going "Heyyy," instead of "Hey."

-You know?
-Yeah.

Berny.

The area that I feel like it's let down
is the frame.

I wish you had spent more time

just perfecting the precision
of those lines

so that when you looked
straight into the camera

it was this perfectly optical illusion
square shape.

I think the outside bit
might've taken it too far

but I love what you did in the center.

Thank you.

James...

Your use of colour is so intelligent.

It's far beyond where I would expect
anyone to be at your stage.

The confidence you showed is exceptional.

There was five different makeups
and all of them were good enough

and then you pushed it even further.

It is stunning and I am so impressed!

Thank you so much.

Eve, can you step forward please?

[Eve] I wanted my look to be

a passionate explosion
of my love for makeup.

I'm going to be honest with you.
I don't think it's that technical

and it's not the most original thing
that I've seen.

[Dominic] Everyone else is telling us
a little bit more about them.

I agree. I know what you're saying,
and I agree.

[Min] Ashley, can you please step forward?

I'm from Aberdeen but I live in Glasgow,
and I love them both equally,

so I wanted to incorporate both
into my look.

[Dominic] You're showing skill. However...

it lacks... any imagination.

It's a bit too much like a leaflet

and I'm looking for a big old heavy novel.

I wasn't a fan of the finishing touches.

I don't think it's clean enough for me.

Hannah.

[Dominic] Oh, God. I love it.

It's just haunting and the skin tone
and that silver

and the placement of that purple,

just sort of arching up
around that new brow that you've created

is just gorgeous.

-You should be so proud of yourself.
-[Min] You didn't let the fact

that you were in the red chair phase you,

and you did something really difficult,
and I commend you for that.

Who the hell does prosthetics
in the Face Off chair?

Girl, you've got balls.

You were here to go,
"Look at me and be scared."

All of you, be scared.

Unbelievable.

-[applause]
-[whooping]

[Val] Balls!

-[Hannah] Thank you.
-[Dominic] Well done.

Brandon.

I was told so many times
that I'd be unsuccessful, I'd be nothing.

So, I kind of wanted to incorporate that
into my look.

The handprints at the bottom of the neck
have been all the family and friends

-that have supported me.
-[Dominic] I was really worried for you

on writing something backwards.

Jesus Christ, was that hard work.

[Dominic] I could see the sweat.
You know what? You did it right.

It works really well. If I was you,
I'd be actually really happy with this.

Thank you so much, honestly.

It doesn't work for me.

There's too many ideas going on.
I don't feel a cohesive flow.

It's a bit
"kitchen sink with all the dishes in it."

Jake, please come forward.

My story of my look is, like,
how in the past I was really lost

and then I just wanted to show
how I've blossomed.

Your technical day-to-day makeup is good.

You know, the blend on the eye, it's good.

But then I'm not sure about the rest.

I'm not sure about the paper flowers...

just sort of, like, stuck on.

And can we please talk about
the oily neck?

What does that mean?

Why did you do that?

Erm, well, when I was younger
I used to love being in the pool

and just being hot in summer and like...

I don't believe it.

I think you're telling us
what you think we want to hear.

There's nothing you're saying...

that's gonna make it... this excusable.

If you look around the room
and see what everyone else did,

this isn't the standard we are expecting.

It's, it's too basic.

Are you taking this seriously?

[sniffling]

Yeah.

[crying]

I'm really sorry.

I'm irritated,
because I was observing you.

You were giving it all that
and you were laughing about.

Everyone else worked really hard.
They put their heads down, they focused,

and they delivered incredible tales
of who they are.

This tells me nothing.

It tells me nothing about who you are.
It's not good enough.

You have to really have a proper think
about what it is you're doing here,

what it is you want, and start delivering.

It's not good enough.

Thank you.

[tense music playing]

I'm sorry.

Sorry for being unprofessional.

I'm ready to be more professional,
head in the game.

My mirror, me, nothing else.

-Good, that's exactly what I wanted.
-[Jake] Yeah.

[Dominic] I'm looking forward to it.

Ophelia, would you like to step forward?

So, I was born and raised in Hong Kong.

My favorite thing about Hong Kong
is definitely the neon lights.

Super iconic, I think,
and I wanted to capture that,

but mixed in with
a traditional Chinese opera mask.

[gasps]

I just love it.

I love it so much I'm gonna ask
to have this printed

because I want this in my apartment

because I just think it's so imaginative.

It's true makeup artistry.

-This is a true glow up.
-Oh, my God.

Your use of neon is absolutely perfect,
the way you've carved out the lines.

I watched you,
you made not a single mistake.

It was perfect.

This is definitely
one of my favorite looks.

I loved it when you took the cotton bud
and you did the negative space.

You were just drawing a line perfectly.

Never did you make a mistake.

The symmetry, the everything.

You know what I'm gonna say.
I'm gonna say "ding dong!"

I mean, this is beyond!

-[applause]
-[cheering]

Thank you so much.

MUAs, thank you.

Please, will you go next door

while we decide
who is going to be in the Face Off.

[dramatic music playing]

It's such a shame
because he did so well yesterday

and the client loved his look.

This just isn't good enough.

Yes, there is technicality,
but the story is so basic.

It's just not clean enough.

It doesn't feel very original.

It doesn't tell me a story.
It doesn't tell me anything about her.

[tense rhythmic music playing]

[judges sighing]

James, Hannah, you were our first two MUAs

in the Face Off chairs.

Double ding dong, you beat the seat.

-Thank you.
-[applause]

Which means we have two empty spaces.

Jake.

You didn't tell us a story
and you didn't take it seriously enough.

So you'll be in the Face Off.

Thank you.

The second MUA
that will be in the Face Off

because of a lack of cohesion

and the story was just too literal.

That MUA is...

Ashley.

Judges, thank you ever so much.
I'll bring them through. Thank you.

Ashley, Jake, say your goodbyes
because one of you will not be returning.

[Jake] I did think
I would be in the Face Off.

To make sure I'm not going home

I think it's really important for me
to show Val and Dom

a level of professionalism, like now,
as soon as I can.

I am not ready to leave this competition
but I don't wanna say that

because then that's when people go home.
[laughs]

[Stacey] To level the playing field,
the MUAs will face off

over a pair of identical twins.

So, this week was all about
creating a statement for a brand.

So, we would like you to create
a real statement under pressure.

You're gonna have 10 minutes
to give us a big bold ombré lip.

An ombré is a gradient of colour.

I will start with the darker colour
on the outer rim of the lip.

I will then blend to a lighter shade

and then in the center of the lip,
it's lighter again.

The perfect ombré will make your lips
look larger.

Ding dong!

I wish you both the best of luck.

You've got 10 minutes
and your time starts... now.

[fast tempo electronic music playing]

The Face Off mirrors the real life
of a professional MUA.

It's designed to put
their technical ability

under the microscope.

And if you can't deliver under pressure,
then this is not the life for you.

Guys, that's five minutes gone.
We're halfway through.

Jake... He's created actually
quite a nice lip line.

His biggest problem is those damn nails.

He finds it very difficult
to hold the brush.

[Dominic] Ashley is going
for a darker center,

bleeding out to a lighter edge:
A reverse ombré lip.

Now that's tricky. It can get messy.

I'm not sure she's gonna pull it off.

One minute left. One minute.

Jake, Ashley, that's your time.
Please put your brushes down.

-Let's have a little chat.
-Let's have a conflab.

Ashley's lip is sharper

but the ombré is bleeding.

It's not smooth.

Jake's bottom lip...

It's a little bit wishy-washy.

-Both had flaws with symmetry.
-Yeah.

Both had flaws with application,

but I think I know which one I prefer.

I definitely know which one I prefer.

[dramatic drum roll]

Jake...

there was an issue with balance
and symmetry.

Ashley...

you went into dangerous territory.

You did a reverse ombré,

which is kind of hard to pull off.

Ashley...

please pack up your kit,
you'll be going home.

I'm so sorry.

[Stacey] Ashley,
you should feel super proud.

Thousands of people have applied.
You made it to the final ten.

Thank you.

Oh my God, I had so much more.

Well done.

[Ashley] I took a total gamble
with the reverse ombré lip with gloss

and it just didn't pay off.

So Jake, next time we see you,
those nails must be gone.

Yes, Val.

Jake, I'm gonna take you through.

Well done.

I'm so happy not to be leaving.
I'm literally ecstatic.

Gang.

[gasps]

[Jake] I'm gonna try so hard
and show Val and Dom

that I am serious and I do mean business.

[Stacey] Congratulations to all of you.

I'm not gonna say too much
but I would urge you to go home,

get some rest.

The next assignment is pretty full on.

[end theme playing]
