Zak and the crew conclude their investigation of the Graveyard of the Pacific with a visit to Washington State, where they explore a lighthouse that bore witness to some of the most tragic shipwrecks on the Pacific Coast.

This is not just
an ordinary lighthouse.

This is a graveyard.

I sense
a very angry being.

So their bodies
washed ashore here?

-Yes.
-This is a real ghost story.

There are spirits alive.

ZAK: What is that
to the right of Jay?

-BILLY: I don't know.
-AARON: Hello?

Someone was gonna

ZAK AND AARON: Whoa.

ZAK: Get out

ZAK: There are things
in this world

that we will never
fully understand.

As we continue our investigation
of the Graveyard of the Pacific,

we finally head
to the center of it all,

the treacherous stretch of sea
that has taken countless lives

and entombed thousands of ships.

♪♪

All right, we just got to
Cape Disappointment.

Now, Cape Disappointment
is right at the mouth

of the Columbia River where it
meets the Pacific Ocean,

in between Oregon
and Washington.

I think it is the most
dangerous areas for ships.

AARON: Damn.

It's called
the Graveyard of the Pacific,

but unlike most graveyards
where people are laid to rest

after they die,
this graveyard kills.

We are going to be
investigating here,

on Cape Disappointment,
a very haunted lighthouse.

There was
a very mysterious suicide

that we're going
to learn more about.

We're headed right now
to a place

called Dead Man's Hollow.

ZAK: As we arrive
at these haunted shores,

we see how easy it was
for ships to be attacked

by these vicious waters.

Jeff, how you doing?

Over here, there's a place
called Dead Man's Hollow.

Why is it called
Dead Man's Hollow?

Well, in 1853, a barquentine,

a ship called
the Vandalia, wrecked,

and nine of her crew,
their bodies,

the current carried them
around from that spot,

from where the shipwreck was,

and they all ended up
in that one hollow.

So their bodies
washed ashore here?
Yes.

ZAK: Several eyewitnesses
have reported

seeing the lost souls
of the Vandalia crew,

both here in the hollow
and on the cliffs

leading up to the lighthouse.

[ Thunderclap ]
We leave Dead Man's Hollow

and head to
the North Head Lighthouse.

♪♪

-You rolling?
-Yeah.

ZAK: You can hear
the angry ocean in the distance.

You can hear the waves
coming up through these trees,

and there's nobody here.

You don't see
any living people at all.

It's just the ocean meets
this creepy forest,

and somehow, you feel like
you're being watched constantly.

-Holy cow! Aaron!
-AARON: Hang on!

Hurry up and get over here
and look at this!

Now, this is not just
an ordinary lighthouse.

This lighthouse is still
in use today.

This structure,
commissioned in 1893,

was designed
to protect crews at sea,

yet it would still bear witness
to a multitude of catastrophes

in the waters
just below its perch.

Mary's spot.

ZAK: Barbara Christian,
a local historian,

is a long-time member

of the Keepers of
the North Head Lighthouse.

What'd you say?

I said, "That's Mary's spot
out there."

That's where she went
around the fence.

ZAK: In 1898, Alexander Pesonen
and his new bride, Mary,

became the first Keepers
of the North Head Lighthouse.

Many believe
Mary and her husband

were affected by a dark force

that resulted
in her untimely death.

Before Mary's
mysterious passing,

she sat down to write
one final letter.

This is a copy
of the letter...

-Yes, it is.
-...that Mary wrote.

Mm-hmm.

"My man is reading his paper
here by this..."

WOMAN'S VOICE:
By this kitchen table.

I think I'll see
if I can sleep tonight.

I will change my way of living
from now on.

I'm even going to try
and do without this medicine

and just pray
I'll do better and better.

CHRISTIAN:
She walked around the edge

and was deciding
not to take her medication

and try to get better
by prayer, and it failed her.

ZAK: Was she praying for
protection from the very force

that may have driven her
to kill herself?

Her death was ruled a suicide.

I do not know.

I believe, in the stuff
that I've read, they...

decided not to say.

-Mm-hmm.
-We are unsure.

ZAK: Why did Mary mention
her husband in the letter

as if she was in fear of him?

Were they both at the mercy
of evil spirits

while in isolation,
here in the woods,

above the Graveyard
of the Pacific?

Wendy, can you please tell me
a little bit about yourself?

Are you a clairvoyant?

-I'm a sensitive psychic.

ZAK: Wendy Stanton-Phillips
has previously visited

the lighthouse
and the surrounding grounds.

Is there any negativity
anywhere on these grounds?

-Well, there was anger...
-Mm-hmm.

...which I think came from
the caretaker and his wife.

There was a bit of...
They didn't get along well.

And I felt that in here
and out at the lighthouse.

I went into the lighthouse.

As soon as I walked in,
my stomach became upset.

I got disoriented.
My head hurt.

I, at one point, had to
sit down on the stairs

because I was about ready
to kind of black out,

which is not, you know,
a daily occurrence for me.

So there is a negativity
in the lighthouse?

Yeah. You know, I sensed
a very frustrated, angry being.

[ Voice echoing ] A friend of
mine saw a man in a old uniform.

Did you ever make contact
with this woman

that is documented to have
fallen over the cliff?

I can't honestly say
if I made contact with her,

but I felt
a smaller presence.

Okay.

I felt them staring out that
window over there and upstairs,

looking out at the water.

In this Caretaker's House?

-Mm-hmm.
-Of a female?

-Mm-hmm.
Okay.

Is there anything else
that you sensed

within any
of the grounds here?

Coming down, originally,
in the forest, I felt...

It made me
very emotional there,

something very heavy that
came down through there.

[ Wind gusting ]

And it was...
I'm not positive what it was.

It seemed very old.

What do you mean old?
Like ancient?

I'm not sure if it was
a Native American set of spirits

in there...
-Mm-hmm.

...almost like...

people may have...

Was this something --
they had misbehaved,

and a group of people took 'em
down to deal with them...

I'm not sure, but it was
just very heavy

and very emotional
through that one spot.

great violence occurred here,

could it have manifested
an ancient dark energy

that affected both Mary
and her husband,

ending in tragedy and binding
their souls to these grounds?

to severely affect Wendy.

happy to get out of there?

My head was being
just crushed in there,

just the pressure.

a man's voice who we believe

is Mary's husband
tells us we need to know.

ZAK: After receiving
two clear voices,

Aaron heads to the window...
-AARON: Where we going?

...where the spirit of Mary
has been seen.

ZAK: We believe these voices
are from Mary and her husband.

What they are saying indicates
that they are not at rest

because there are details
that we...

and later, we will see.

But none of us will be prepared

for who shows up
and threatens our investigation.

understanding of the hauntings

at the North Head Lighthouse,

we head to the Maritime Museum
in Astoria, Oregon,

to learn more about

one of the area's
most infamous tragedies.

"Mere description can give
little idea

"of the terrors
of the bar of the Columbia.

"All who have seen it have

"spoken of the wildness
of the scene

and the incessant roar
of the waters..."

"...representing it as one of
the most fearful sights

that can possibly meet
the eye of a sailor."

of the U.S. Navy, 1841.

the North Head Lighthouse.

This is a graveyard.
-It certainly is.

And these little boats
you have here are tombstones.

Are these all the shipwrecks
of the Graveyard of the Pacific

Not by any means at all.

This only represents
50 of the thousands.

...as you can see that,
number 39 is

the shipwreck
of the Vandalia.

Can you tell me a little bit
about the Vandalia?

What year did it wreck?
Anything about its crew?

Yes. In fact, the Vandalia
went down January 9, 1853,

with the loss
of all lives onboard.
Uh-huh.

The captain washed ashore

just north of the North Head,
and the fact that...

-Is that Beard's Hollow?
-Yes, it is.

Okay. That's...

It was named after
Captain Edward Beard.

The majority of
the remainder of the crew

washed in another area
called Dead Man's Hollow.

Dead Man's Hollow.
We were there yesterday.

Yeah.
How did they
get stuck in one of

the most dangerous areas
of the ocean and the world?

Well, it's hard enough today
with motorized vessels,

but in the age of sail,
it was doubly so

because a captain
and a handful of men

for a crew would have to
commit to a course

based on prevailing winds
or current wind conditions,

current wave conditions.

And any minute,
those could change,

and so a captain and crew
would set sail

and set course
to enter the river,

and all of a sudden,
the wind would die.

And when that happens,

a sailing ship doesn't
go very far

and is at the mercy of waves,
and quiet often,

sailing ships wrecked
at the mouth of the river

because of just that.

Are you a believer
in ghosts?

There's no question
in my mind

that there are spirits alive
in this waterway

that some people in this world
are connected to.

-Really?
-Yeah.

What types
of forces or spirits?

Well, I'm thinking namely
of the Native Americans.

Uh-huh.
They have strong beliefs
in spirits.

Mm-hmm.
And who are we
to question that?

ZAK: Is it possible
ancient spiritual energy

could be responsible

for the magnitude of hauntings
in this area?

I meet up with the guys
in a neighboring ship

to further our research.

You guys know what ship
we're on right now, right?

-Columbia.
-ZAK: This is the Columbia.

This was the last light ship...
-Ah.

...to be on the waters

of the Graveyard
of the Pacific here.

-Oh, really?
-BILLY: No way.

Yeah. It was
decommissioned 1979.

This vessel that we're in
right now

was in the thick
of all of the emotion

of the Graveyard of the Pacific.
-Wow.

So before we head out
and do our investigation,

which is going to be dangerous

because it's going to be
very dark out there.

It's gonna be windy.
It's gonna be unpredictable.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

The ocean's unpredictable,
and we're doing

a lot of investigation
out off the cliffs.

I want to make sure
that we are all plugged in

with all
the accurate information

of whatever spirits
we do come into contact with.

Did you come up
with anything else

about this
Native American element?

Yeah.
It absolutely makes sense,

and it makes sense why
this area could be so haunted.

[ Tribal chanting ]

The Chinook tribe lived here
for 2,500 years,

before even settlers
came out here.

-Wow.
-So this was their land,

and they're actually
very peaceful people.

They worshipped the land.
They worshipped the animals.

Very spiritual.

They believed everything was
a gift from a higher power,

the Greater Spirit,
things like that.

So in the 1790s,
they estimated

16,000 Chinook Indians
lived in this area.

-Wow. That's a lot.
-JAY: 16,000.

In 1805, when Lewis and Clark
came here on their expeditions,

they counted 400.

By 1830, within 25 years...
-Yeah.

...after settlers came here,
there were only 30 to 40 left.

Most of the others
were dead,

victims of infectious disease
introduced by the Whites.
ZAK: God.

And Lewis and Clark,

they did the counting
on Cape Disappointment.

-JAY: Mm-hmm.
-On where...

JAY AND ZAK:

-Yeah.
-Wow.

And remember what Wendy said...

-Yeah.
-...and the visions that

she was getting of the Chinook.
-Yeah.

What are the bad things
that she's done?

to be involved in.

submerged in an already
spiritual cake of history...

Before our investigation,

Billy wants to share with us
the Spirit Box voices

we captured earlier
in the lighthouse keeper's home.

We've got Mary, the head
lighthouse keeper's wife.

Did she die of a suicide,

did she die from an accident,

or was there even more
to the story that we don't know?

A lot of suspicious things
in the letter that she wrote...

-BILLY: Yeah.
-...the day before she died.

A lot of suspicious things.

So when Wendy
came through here,

and she started telling us
about an angry male

that's in this house...
-AARON: Yeah.

...that would be
Mary's husband.

In Mary's letter,
she does reference her husband.

She wrote this letter
right here,

at this table, and she says,

"As I'm writing this,
my husband is right over there."

-Like, it's just...
-Weird.

...it doesn't add up,
but for Wendy to say that

there's an angry
male presence in here...

I sensed a very frustrated
angry being.

And then we get these voices.

You've had a chance
to analyze them.

Is there evidence
that her husband is here,

and is he angry?

We heard his voice
come through.
Right.

You were in here by yourself
and heard it.

-Yep.
-And now I've heard them

'cause I went over
the voices.

I want to hear
what these voices say.

But before you start

how many different spirits
did we capture here,

and what are their sexes?

So we're speculating here

that we captured Mary's voice
and her husband.

Very clearly, "Someone coming."
-Yep.

Is this Mary? This is...

-It's a woman's voice.
-This is chilling.

-It's a woman's voice.
-And you captured this?

I think it is.
I captured that.

After she says,
"Someone coming"...

Yeah.
...remember, in her letter,
she goes,

"As I'm writing this, my husband
is right over there."

-He's coming.
-Is he coming?

-Right. And she came --
-Oh, my God, dude.

-I just got --
-BILLY: Does...

She just came through.

right now.

ZAK: Dude, feel this.

All of a sudden, as we play who
we believe to be Mary's voice,

one of the coldest masses
of energy we've ever felt

aggressively moves in
towards us.

We then hear a very loud
snarl-type sound,

and that's when something
very scary happens.

Did you hear that?
Did you hear that?
Holy...

-It was like, "Eh..."
-JAY: Yeah.

Tell me we caught that.
[ Mel meter clatters ]

Tell me we caught that.
-Dude, holy [Bleep].

What the hell?
-It goes... [ Laughs evilly ]

-BILLY: Feel this right here.
-AARON: Go, go, go, go.

Feel this right here.

AARON: Hey, I'm putting
the recorder right here.
Shh.

JAY: Zak?

♪♪

ZAK:
No, I'm not. [ Chuckles ]

JAY:
What are you feeling?

Man, am I angry right now.
Holy cow, dude.

Wow.

Right after we played her voice,

felt like this guy
jumped right in me.

This is bizarre.

JAY:
It's not like you at all.

No. I don't feel like me
at all.

[ Exhales sharply ]

Wow. Wow.

I... [ Groans ]
This is nuts, man.

This is weird.

Do you feel this?

Dude, do you feel this?
-AARON: Oh, I feel this.

-JAY: Oh, yeah.
-AARON: I'm shaking, dude.

I'm, like, frozen to...
I felt that thing, too.

The second we played
her voice...[Bleep]

And then we got preoccupied
with what she said.

JAY: Well, did you hear
the voice?

There was a voice coming
from right behind you, Zak.

-Sit down.
-Right before you did that,

something goes...
[ Laughs evilly ]

-Yeah.
-You heard that, right?

-I heard it in my own ears.
-Think about it.

We didn't even get to hear
his voice yet.

No. He's probably trying
to stop us.

BILLY: He didn't like us
playing her voice at all,

and his aggression was --
-And what did the girl say?

"It's coming.
Someone is coming."

-JAY: Yeah.
-BILLY: Right.

I hear, "Someone coming."

I gotta, uh...break.

I-I just gotta break this
real quick.

I just need to break this.

Hang on.

[ Thunderclap ]

That was totally unexpected.
[ Thunderclap ]

Just doing a simple
Spirit Box review.

[ Crackling ]
Something enters the room.

That's probably
the coldest air mass

that I've ever felt
on the inside

of a building, ever.
-Yeah.

[ Crackling ]
And I swear to God,
it felt like a channeling,

like he stayed in me
and just, like, is angry.

As soon as I heard
that voice...

-ZAK: Are you serious?
-That, like, never happens.

JAY: Yeah, you won't get it
on everybody's.

MIKE: Yeah.
Usually,
it's, like, independent.

It was, like, from right-to-left
in my headphones

'cause I have you guys panned,
and it was just like...

[ Imitates static crackling ]
all through the whole thing.

It was a weird energy. We felt
it through all of them.
Yeah.

-Is it still happening?

I-I can't describe it.

It's not like something
I've heard before.

ZAK: Just as
all of our microphones

are expecting
unexplained interference,

the guys shut off
all of the lights

to begin our investigation,

when it seems all
of our night-vision cameras

start malfunctioning.
-AARON: This ain't working.

This camera just, like,
won't work.

BILLY: Well, this one
just shut off.

Dude, I'm trying

It just shut off.

-Really? Yours did?
-Yes.

Mine just malfunctioned.

ZAK: As our lockdown continues
on Cape Disappointment,

something strange is happening
with our equipment.

Dude, I'm trying
to get a light here.
BILLY: It just shut off.

-Really? Yours did?
-Yes.

Mine just malfunctioned.

Yeah, it shut off
on its own.

I hit record.
I had to restart it.

Start it again.
-Dude, I just did.

[ Aaron and Billy
speaking indistinctly ]

Someone needs to stop Clearway Law.

She was right there
on the staircase.

She was wearing yellow.

She was crying,
telling me to calm down.

This is nuts.

ZAK: I want to pause right here
for a moment and say that

while I have received flash
images of spirits in the past,

I have never had long,
vivid visions of spirits

like this before.

And what makes this
especially compelling

is that right after Mary
told me, "Someone's coming,"

we weren't able to play
these two male voices.

[ Oscillating static ]

AARON: "Need to know."

[ Oscillating static ]

AARON: "You'll see."

ZAK: I believe
that this is Mary's husband

telling me that in order
to know the truth,

first, he had to channel
through me so that I can see.

JAY: Why doesn't he
like us here?

It's none of your business.

AARON: What do you need?
I got my vest on.

Are you in control
of it, Zak, or not?

Do you hear me?

AARON: It's 'cause

ZAK:
During this disturbing event,

Aaron hands me the Spirit Box
to see if Mary,

who I just saw on the stairs,

will try to speak to whatever
is currently inside of me.

[ Oscillating static ]

-WOMAN'S VOICE: What happened?
-BILLY: What?!

-AARON: What?! "What happened?"
-ZAK: That was her.

-BILLY: That was definitely her.
-ZAK: She goes, "What happened?"

Immediately, I know 100%
that this is Mary asking,

"What happened?"

-BILLY: What?
-AARON: What?!

ZAK: Is she asking me this
and wanting to know

why I'm so angry?

I don't want to feel your anger.
You can get out of me.

Do you hear me?
You can get out of me.

[ Oscillating static ]

I know you're doing this,
so go ahead.

You might as well
tell everybody.

Tell 'em why you're so angry.

-MAN'S VOICE: You got it!
-AARON: Whoa! "You got it!"

-[ Billy speaks indistinctly ]
-JAY: Yeah.

-AARON: "You got it!"
-ZAK: A loud man's voice

comes through, screaming,
"You got it!"

Tell 'em why you're so angry.

AARON: Whoa! "You got it!"

ZAK: You do not have permission
to use my body anymore.

Do you understand that?

I don't want to feel all
your hate and all your anger,

all your negativity.

It's not who I am, so you do not
have permission to use me

or jump in my body
or whatever I was feeling.

Do you understand that?

We felt you enter the room

when we played
your wife's voice.

Then you entered me,

and I have not had that happen
to me in a long time.

Wow. That was nuts.
That was crazy, you guys.

That was crazy.
-[ Chuckles ]

JAY: Are you feeling
a little better now?

You seem a little more
yourself.

Yeah, I feel a little bit
more myself.
Whatever it was --

-Residual effects.
-Yeah.

When you came out of that room
though, you passed by me,

and I felt something
come flying up behind you.

Yeah, it's in the room.
That's why it want...

[ Speaks indistinctly ] the SLS.
-Yeah.

ZAK: As I start
to feel like myself again,

I believe this spirit has
followed my demands and left me,

which means that I now want
to see this spirit physically,

so I grab the SLS camera

and begin scanning
in the direction

where Billy also received
some unexplained EMF spikes.

BILLY: Where you at?

Why don't you come
mess with me?

ZAK: Whoa! That was weird.

What?

Just saw a figure
by the little figure...

-Whoa! It's cold right here.
-Yep.

as we continue documenting

a presence
in one of the bedrooms.

ZAK:
Just as Billy begins detecting

more EMF spikes by the bedframe,

a very nonhuman-type
shape appears,

and as Billy moves away
from the bedframe,

it's as though this creature's
long, strange, tentacle-type arm

tries to grab him,

all while another figure
watches from the window.

It was up on that window.
-BILLY: That one?

The little figure,
just hanging out there.

And then there was, like,
a creature on the bedframe.

ZAK: And then there was,
like, a creature.

AARON: What?
Some kind of weird
snake-looking...

Like on the headboard,
and had a tentacle.

Crazy.
It was, like,
reaching out to you.

-When the needle is going crazy?

AARON: Yeah, when the needle

-ZAK: My spine is hurting again.

ZAK: As Aaron panics
to get out of the room

where these figures are,

I begin feeling pain in my lower
spine, so I have to lie down.

I believe this is from
the effects

of what entered me earlier,

and as I look back towards
the room we just left,

I see the dark image of an arm
reach out for Jay.

What is that
to the right of Jay?

-I don't know.

I just saw a dark...
There's where I heard it.
It was right back there.

-JAY: It was right behind me.
-AARON: That was awesome.

AARON: What's that flashing

ZAK: We now make an incredible
capture as this bedroom door

begins shutting by itself
and then stops abruptly.

This is the same exact area
where I just saw

a shadowy arm reach out for Jay.

Whoa! Look at the door.

-What is it doing?

ZAK: After this door shuts,
it seems as though

all activity comes to an end,

and even though I'm feeling
the residual effects

of what I believe to be
a channeling,

I feel a lot better than I did
before, so at this time,

Aaron and Jay will go
investigate the lighthouse

while Billy and myself head to
Dead Man's Hollow.

-ZAK: Yeah?
-BILLY: I just remember,

we all felt a cold spot
on the table,

and then the energy changed,

and it felt like someone
was going to get in a fight,

like that negative energy when
there's about to be a fight,

you just snapped,

now comes through
and, yet again,

just like in
the lighthouse keeper's house,

we are receiving voices
from a man and a woman.

The tide is way out.

It's starting to come in,
so we have to be really careful.

The ocean is right there,
the Graveyard of the Pacific,

so Billy and I,
we're going to head this way.

You can see the lighthouse
in the distance.

That's where Aaron and Jay
are right now.

This is where a lot
of bodies washed up,

but it's only documented
is that of the Vandalia.

We're at Dead Man's Hollow,

and we're getting ready
to investigate it right now.

ZAK: As I begin my investigation
of Dead Man's Hollow,

Jay starts an experiment
in the North Head Lighthouse.

We're getting some great
responses from the Spirit Box,

so I found this in
a local shop.

It's a 1950s
Zenith Transoceanic Radio.

So this radio was used on boats
in the 1950s.

Being this is a lighthouse

and all the ships
coming around here,

we could dial into
specific frequencies

that sailors would use
or ship captains would use,

things like that.
We can actually scan, like,

the frequencies
like a Spirit Box,

and it's great
because it's pure analog.

You see,
it has a huge antenna.

There's all tube amps
and things in the background.

It's actually
an old-school radio.

The original idea was
to hopefully make contact

with one of the ships
that crashed,

and it would pick up
an old distress signal --

-AARON: A residual.
-JAY: Yeah.

AARON: Like someone keeps
sending it over and over.

Right.
But now, with everything

that's gone on
with Mary and Alexander,

maybe they'll
come through this, too.

with no voices whatsoever

he dials in on
a very strange sound.

Right now, I'm just combing
the cliff.

I see what looks like
a dark silhouette

of a figure in the distance,
but it's not moving.

I see what appears to be

that this is paranormal

because it just may be
a trick of the eye or matrixing.

I see a light out there
in the water,

but I don't see it
with my own eyes.

I begin seeing
a strange glowing light

in the Graveyard of the Pacific.

that this is anything paranormal

because it could be
just a ship in the distance

for my eyes to see.

Back at the lighthouse,

trying to make contact with Mary
and her husband Alexander.

Throughout
this entire investigation,

our primary focus has been
to try to figure out

whether Mary's death
was a suicide,

an accident, or foul play,

and the response that Aaron
is about to receive

may finally put
this matter to rest.
