So, here it is, everyone!

We’re not just going
UP the mountain today,

are we class?

We’re going INSIDE it!

Into the caves!

Have fun!

Remember - stay close together.

That’s the first rule of caving.

I can’t wait to get underground, Norman.

That’s where the bats live.

Bats?

No one said anything about bats!

Bats are really interesting.

They’re really scary!

I’ve seen them in films.

They chase after people!

With their flappy wings and batty magic!

No they don’t.

They’re peaceful creatures
that hang upside-down

and eat insects.

Yuck! Who cares!

They’re creatures of DOOM!

If you see one, run!

Nasty flappy wings and pointy teeth.

Well, if I see one, I’m finding
out as much about it as I can.

(HUMMING)

Penny: Hello, Gareth!

Still working on that old hand-cart?

Oh, yes - this old thing
hasn’t been used for nearly

a hundred years.

It used to travel in
and out of the old mines,

carrying coal and equipment.

Driven by human strength alone.

Rrrgggghhhh.

I’m guessing it needs a bit of
work to get it going again.

I’d lend you a hand, Gareth,
but we’ve got to get back

to the station.

I know someone who might be free though.

(PHONE RINGS)
Hello?

Station Officer Steele!

Look - stalactites!

Rock formations that hang down!

Oooooooh!

And listen - can you hear
the underground streams?

Awww.

I haven’t seen one bat!

Good! I don’t want any of that
scary bat-magic near me!

Bats aren’t scary or magic, Norman!

Yes, they are, Mandy!

It’s a well-known fact that
if they flap near you -

you turn into a bat!

Are we really deep in the mountain, Moose?

No, there are tunnels that
go much deeper than these.

But some of them are dangerous, eh.

Eeek!

Right, so let’s head
back up to the daylight!

Stay close together everyone!

Great!

We’re getting out of here
before I get flapped at!

Steele: A hand-cart!

Oh, I haven’t seen one of those in years!

She’s a proper beauty!

Stiff though!

It could do with some expert attention-

May I adjust the crank shaft?

A bat! Aw, it’s so cute!

I can’t see!

Don’t worry, Jimbo, your eyes
aren’t used to the light

after being in the dark.

You’ll be able to see soon!

When you do, can you tell
me if I’ve been turned

into a bat?

I’m sure I got ’flapped’ down there!

Don’t be silly, Norman Price.

Hang on - someone’s missing!

Yeah-where’s Mandy?

Oh no! Maybe it got her?

The mad bat of Pontypandy!

Oh! There you are!

And you’re hanging upside down!

Brilliant!

Norman is SO wrong!

You’re scared of me,
not the other way round!

Oooh.

this must be one of
those underground streams.

Wargh!

Ahhh!

Oh, no!

He-e-e-e-e-elp! He-e-e-e-elp!

Oh, nooooo!

Mandy’s been turned into a bat!

BE QUIET, NORMAN PRICE!

He-e-e-e-elp!

Sounds like she’s a long way down!

CALL FIREMAN SAM!

(BEEPING)

Mandy Flood is trapped in the caves.

(ALARM)

Looks like we’re heading
back to the mountains, Sam!

Let’s take Hydrus!

(SIREN)

What happened?

We just heard a scream!

Don’t worry! I know these caves!

He-e-e-elp!

Careful, Sam.

This tunnel sometimes floods.

It’s really dangerous.

Help!

Don’t worry, Mandy! I’m coming down!

Are you OK, Mandy?

Here’s some water.

Thanks Penny.

I slipped.

But I think I’m okay.

You’re a long way down.

What do you think, Penny?

I can’t carry her up- there’s
no room for us both to fit.

We’ve got to find another way.

(DISTANT VOICES)

What’s that noise?

Steele: Two experts ARE better than one.

What’s going on down there?

I can hear Station Officer Steele

working on the hand cart.

Hmm. She’ll be growing batty wings by now!

And hanging upside down, poor Mandy bat.

Moose, is there a map of the caves?

Yes, it’s right here!

These are the caves.

They go into the mountain this way.

And the old mines go
into the mountain this way.

And they get pretty close -
just where Mandy is trapped!

All ready to go, thanks to two experts!

It needs two drivers too as well -

who’s coming with me?

You’re the one who knows about
emergency rescues, Norris!

Penny, can you hear me?

PENNY?

Penny (distant): Sam. We’re here. Sam.

Sam!

There!

Stand back, Penny!

Get behind me, Mandy!

The whole mountain’s shaking!

Don’t worry, Mandy, It’s Sam!

(CHEERS)

Mandy! What happened?

I’m sorry, Moose!

I should have followed you out.

But I saw a bat, you see-

I knew it! It did its bat-magic on you!

It turned you into-

Hang on. You don’t look very batty.

Don’t be silly, Norman Price!

The bat was nothing to do with it.

Caves can be very dangerous places, Mandy,

you must always stay with your
group and never wander off.

I know, Fireman Sam, I’m sorry everyone!

And bats really are harmless, Norman-

Look, here’s one.

Waaarrgghh!

I’m being turned into a bat!

He’s certainly flapping about like a bat.

Waaaargh!

At least I don’t need to go
underground to study bats.

I can study Norman the bat instead!
