Falling Skies (2011–2015): Season 3, Episode 9 - Journey to Xibalba - full transcript

Tom uncovers confidential intelligence about the heart of the alien operation. Meanwhile, Charleston prepares to mount an offensive against the Espheni, but a massive explosion brings the operation to a halt.

The Volm plan to move their weapon
out of the complex this afternoon.

Project Orange gets under way
tomorrow morning at dawn.

What's our target?

We won't know until we go.

"We" won't know,
or you're not telling me?

It's standard military procedure.

You evaluate your target options
till the last minute

and then you go with the best one.

We've got all our eggs
in this basket, Dan.

What if this weapon doesn't work?
Or what if it does?

How do we know the Volm
won't turn it on us

after they've
used it against the Espheni?

- We don't.
- And you're okay with that?

Madam President, you've seen
those streaks in the sky.

The enemy defense grid
is already online.

Every day we wait...

If we don't
knock out that grid,

we're gonna be dead
in three months.

The human race will cease to exist.

Will the Volm weapon work?
I don't know.

Will they end up being the friends

we need them to be?
I don't know.

All I know is that weapon represents
our only chance to win this war.

If it works.

I'll wait to cry until it doesn't.

Meantime, my job is to get
these people ready for battle.

Very good.

Madam President.

Bro, you're gonna want to see this.

I've seen the grid, Lyle.

The Espheni have
an extraordinary visual palette.

Too bad they're irradiating us.

Well, it's not the grid.
We have a visitor.

Well, well, well.
The prodigal son returns.

- Thought you were dead.
- I'm not that easy to kill.

- You still owe me a plane.
- You can have the boat.

- Where you been?
- Gone. I'm back now.

Tom, you're back.

- It's Tom Mason.
- Tom's back.

Dan.

It's Tom Mason.

I heard you came strolling in.

Good to see you.

We need to talk.

And I'll bet you have
a good story to tell.

- I got a story.
- Dad.

- It's not good.
- Dad!

- Ben. Hal.
- You're not hurt?

No.

It's about time.

Just give me a second, Dan.

Take as much time as you need.
We'll talk later.

We waited for you
at Mechanicsville.

You never showed.

The Skitters were there at
the Picketts' farm when I went back.

What happened to the Picketts?

I don't know. They were gone.

How come they didn't kill you?

I wasn't part of the plan.

They put me on a ship
and flew me to a tower.

Karen.

She's running the war from there.

Is that where she took
Anne and Lexie?

Yes.

Did you see them?
Are they with you?

No.

They're okay, right?

No.

They're not okay.

- There's nothing left.
- Hey.

There's us. We're left.

Dad, you know this for certain
about Anne and Lexie?

Yes.

Look. Listen to me.

I want you to take the pain
that you're feeling right now,

and I want you to use it.

We're gonna go after Karen.

We'll grieve for Anne and Lexie
when she's dead.

When we get there, I hope
you let me do the honors.

That's good. Use that.
That'll see you through.

I got to go talk to Colonel Weaver.

Dad, what are you saying?

You told me that
if all we had left was hate,

they'd already changed us.

I know, Ben,
but that was a long time ago.

Right now, all I've got is hate,

and I don't plan on wasting it.

We never even
considered Boston a target, Tom.

We move out tomorrow.
Changing our plans now

- would put us behind the eight ball.
- I understand your concerns, Dan,

but until Karen took me there,

we didn't know
she was headquartered in Boston.

But we take out the Boston tower,

we knock out the grid,
and we get Karen.

That tower's pretty well defended.
It's surrounded by Mechs.

There's a lot less resistance
at our current target.

But we don't get Karen.

We don't need to get Karen
to accomplish this objective.

Gents, I damn near met my maker
trying to take that tower once.

The thought of having a second shot
at it sort of makes me think

it's not such a bad idea.

A day and a half to get there,
at least.

And we're gonna need a lot more
firepower to take on those Mechs.

See, I don't think so. Since we took
out the Wakonda reactor,

the Espheni are short on fuel.

When I made my escape,
I saw their defenses.

Those Mechs
are mostly inoperable.

They're just standing there
like the Emperor's Terra Cotta army.

You know,
I see the tactical advantages.

We know that Karen controls
the Espheni defenses

up and down the eastern seaboard.

We take her out,
we cut the head off the snake.

See, that's right.
That's exactly right.

Tempting proposition,
Tom, but...

...I need a little time
to think about it.

Whatever the target is,
I'd like to come along.

Dan, if you'll have me.

There's nothing
I'd like more, Tom.

You're worried. Okay. I... I understand that.

Let's lay our cards on the table.
For all you know,

- Karen put a bug in me.
- She did it to you before.

And I knew something was wrong,
and I told you that straight up.

This is different.

After what happened with Hal,
we can't take any chances.

Well, just keep your eye on me.

You know, if I do anything
even slightly abnormal,

- put a bullet in my head.
- Tom, I don't want to.

What we want and what we need
are two different things!

We need to take out the grid,
and I need to get Karen!

For Anne and for Lexie, please!

And if I have to take a bullet,
I would rather --

That's enough!

Now, Tom, thanks for
the updated intelligence,

but you need to get some rest.
You're dismissed.

Yes, sir.

I think he's telling the truth.

Dan, you guys
have been close,

but you need to
take a step back here.

- He's volatile.
- Why wouldn't he be?

Karen killed Anne
and his little girl.

I'd be pretty damn volatile myself.

I think you are, Colonel Weaver.

Point taken.

But...

...if he does have an implant,

there's no way
we're going to find it,

but if he doesn't and he's telling us the truth...

Then he handed us
the key to victory.

Now, go on, Dan.
Let me chew on this for a while.

Yes, sir.

I'm very happy you have
returned to us, my friend.

I saw your plane go down.

I didn't think I was
ever gonna see you again.

Fate is a strange thing.

It grants us favor when
we least expect it

and deals us blows when
we are least prepared for them.

I am terribly sorry
about Anne and your daughter.

Thank you.

Yeah, I can't really
think about that right now.

Best to keep moving forward.

I tried to tell myself the same thing
when my brother was killed.

But the thoughts came anyway.

That is the most
difficult thing about war.

It snatches up our loved ones.

It swallows them whole.

And we never have an opportunity
to bid them farewell.

That's true.

The last time
I saw my brother,

we quarreled
about a trivial matter.

Had he lived, I'm sure
we would have resolved it,

but the fact that we didn't
continues to haunt me.

I used to think that
love gave me an edge.

Maybe it's just an impediment
that clouds our thinking.

What, then, is the alternative?

Not to love,
so we never have to grieve?

Security review for LDO squadron...

Hey. Incoming.

- Excommunicated already, huh?
- I need to talk to you.

I don't have a problem with that.

Lyle, you got a problem
with that?

- Nope.
- Alone.

Lyle, give me and His Former Highness
here a moment, will you?

Well, it's been a while, Cambridge.
What can I do for you, huh?

You could have shot me today.

Nobody would have known.

Yeah, Lyle would have seen it,
but I get your point.

You're not worried
that Karen put a bug in me?

Au contraire.
I'm betting on it.

When you finally do
bug out like a rabid dog,

somebody's gonna need to
be there to put you down.

It might even be me.

I'm glad to hear it.

Colonel Weaver might hesitate.

You won't.

- No, Tom, I won't.
- Good. Then...

It's gone.
The whole Volm complex is gone.

I didn't hear
any Beamers or Mechs.

Something must have set it off.

Well, if it was the mole,
he certainly upped his game.

Pope.

Looks like that one dragged
the other one from the drink.

Cochise, can you hear me?

- This one's gone.
- He's still alive.

Come on. Help me get him.

Come on, Pope!
Help me carry him!

Get his legs.

Lourdes!

Dr. Delgado, I need your help.

I... I'll be right back. I've got to go up top.

Dr. Delgado!
That can wait. He can't.

- Is he alive?
- He was when we found him.

I... I don't know anything about Volm physiology.

- I wouldn't even know where to--
- It is not necessary.

My people are gone.

They put their lives in my hands,

and I could not hold them.

I cannot hold them in death.

Hey, I'm here. I'm... I'm right here with you.

Listen, you can't let loss
break you, right?

That's what you were
trying to tell me before.

Hope is stronger than loss.

And the human spirit

remains the most powerful
weapon on this planet.

That is a gift.

If you do not
allow it to be extinguished,

it will carry you to victory.

Let it carry you.

In a short time, if not disturbed,

my body will regenerate itself.

You need do nothing.

Okay, we'll make sure
you're not disturbed.

One day, I...

I... I hope we may restore...

each other's hearts, Professor.

I look forward to that day.

He's still breathing.

Hey, everybody, get away from him.

Let's keep everybody
away from him, too.

Lourdes.

Better get back below.
We're liable to have more casualties

- before this is over.
- Yes, sir.

What happens
to the mission now?

First, we got to put out the fires,

get into the Volm complex,
see what's left of the weapon.

And if you recover it,
have they picked a target?

Has there been
a change of plans?

Is it policy now that
my commanders

convene a meeting
and I'm not involved?

Keeping it close to the vest because
there's another mole on the loose.

If it makes you feel any better,

I don't know if there's been
a change of plans.

I shared some information.
They sent me on my way.

What will you do now?

I don't want my old job back,
if that's what you're asking.

If you did, I'd be
tempted to give it to you.

The big chair's tough to fill.

Hi. Thank you.

- Hey.
- Hey.

Seems like this explosion
knocked over an anthill.

Yeah.

Everybody on the northern perimeter's
screaming for extra ammo

in case we're
being set up for an attack.

Yeah, same with
my guys on the east.

Last I heard, though, no contact.

Hey, uh...

Did you hear about
Anne and my sister?

Yeah.

I'm sorry.

Yeah.

We're gonna make Karen pay.

Marina!

- Tom!
- You okay?

I can't see.

- Where are you?
- I'm over here. I'm over here.

- I'm over here.
- Hang on.

Oh, you got a cut on your head.

- I can't see.
- Hang on.

Any better?

Yeah, it's a little better.
You're still really blurry, though.

- Can you stand up?
- Yeah, I think I... I think so.

- Come on. Easy.
- Okay.

Oh, my God.
What the hell happened?

- What happened?
- I don't know.

Let's get you to the infirmary.
Can you walk?

- Yeah. I think so.
- Okay. Hang on to me.

Okay. Oh, God.

- Right here.
- Let's get back at it, people.

Here.

Thanks.

What did you hear?

I don't know.
I can't tell if it's people.

The sound bounces around
a lot down there.

Well, that you can hear through
40 feet of rock is miracle enough.

The key is we stay methodical.

Dig some, listen some,
never give up.

Never give up.

Maggie.

Maggie!

No.

No. No.

No. Not you, too.

Come here. I got you.

Maggie, not you, too.

There you go. Hey.

You're okay. I'm right here.

- I'm right here.
- Hal.

Hey, let it out. There you go.

You're okay.

Colonel, Matt had an idea
how we could get a better picture

- of what's going on below-
- Speak up, son.

Well, I thought that maybe
if we went through the storm drains,

- then Ben could hear better.
- Good idea. Make it happen.

- Okay. Come on.
- Okay.

Pope, I've never seen your crew
work so hard.

Colonel, if we don't
get this Volm show on the road,

we're all gonna be maggot meat
in three months.

What did the, uh,
spikeboy say?

Probably more survivors
down there.

Most likely, it's the cafeteria.

Well, that's good, right?
That's where they all congregate.

Listen. If it held up,
I'm sure your daughter,

she's down there
with that bunch.

Look easy, all right.
We don't need to borrow any trouble.

Now, if the kid's right,
we are 20 feet away

from that northern stairwell,
all right?

And if that's clear,
then it's straight down,

straight shot, 30 feet.

- Right?
- Right.

Let's keep digging!

We got people down there
counting on us.

Come on!

- Watch your head.
- Mm-hmm.

There's two more.

We might have lost hundreds.

Here. Hold this light.

- Right here.
- What? What is it?

It's Lourdes.

- She's still alive.
- Thank God.

- How bad is it?
- I don't know.

We don't have far to go,
though.

Follow me.

Put him on that gurney.
Okay, let's take a look.

- I got two more for you, Doc.
- Dr. Delgado. There.

It's not serious.
She can wait.

Afraid you're gonna need some
stitches, Madam President.

- I can't see. Everything's blurry.
- Please sit down.

- Okay.
- Right here.

Tom. Damn, man,
you're a sight for sore eyes.

- Have you seen my father?
- I think he was up top.

Jeanne, don't worry.
Your dad's a survivor.

Wherever he is,
he's just as worried about you.

Keep your head.
We'll get out of this.

- What's the situation?
- The floor plan.

All these main exits...
totally blocked with rubble.

We can't get through.
Now, I've sent people to take a look

at the elevator shafts here,
here, and here.

What about these north exits?

I haven't had the people
to get over there, Tom.

Well, we could do that.
Find me a weapon, would you?

Yeah.

- How is she?
- Probable concussion.

- What about Lourdes?
- Same.

All we can do is
monitor her till she wakes up.

- Go.
- Okay.

- Go.
- Here.

Thanks.

- You okay?
- Hmm.

When I was a kid, my brother used to
lock me in a dark closet for hours.

Since then,
I've always hated tight places.

I'll feel a hell of a lot better
when we can see the sky again.

Son of a bitch!

Tom. Wait, Tom.
That's not gonna help, man.

- We're not letting it stop us.
- Look, well, it has, okay?

You're gonna need a forklift
to clear this out.

There's got to be another way.

Porter checked
every passage we could.

I say we sit tight, man.
Folks up top,

they're probably digging
their way to us as we speak.

No, no. We can't wait.

Crawlies?

Three, two...

Damn it, Doc.

Dr. Kadar.

Am I glad to see you.

I take it
we're not above ground.

Not even close.

What the hell happened
to my stamina?

I used to have
way more than that.

Could be because
we're running out of air.

Hey. It's my oxygen, too.

That whole corridor
could be clogged.

We could clear the door
and be no closer to getting out.

You know what?
This isn't the time.

You either help me
or you shut up.

You use your oxygen your way.
I'll use it mine.

Moving your muscles
isn't gonna remove this problem

any more than it did
when you left me in Charleston

and went looking for Anne.

That was family. I had to go.

You could have
brought me with you.

- I didn't think I was coming back.
- Exactly.

I'm a big girl, okay?

How I live or die is my choice.
Not yours.

This is a fire stairwell.
It's all reinforced concrete.

I'll need a shaped charge
about seven feet from the floor

to have any chance
of punching through.

- Oh, do we have explosives?
- No.

Actually, I have
half a dozen packs of C4.

- It'll have to do. Blasting caps?
- No.

Those are in the armory,
and we're cut off from that level.

All right.

I'll need about 200 feet of wire.
Zip cord will work.

Where the hell
am I supposed to get that?

This is a mall.
It has electrical wiring.

Most of that wiring
is inside the walls

and no longer working, and the walls are made of...

I'll also need gunpowder
from a dozen rounds,

duct tape,
any batteries you can scrounge,

- and some peanut butter.
- Peanut butter?

- I'm starving.
- Start with the peanut butter.

What are you doing,
Dr. Delgado?

You shouldn't be moving around.
Get back in bed.

But I should be
helping with the wounded.

You are one of the wounded.

I don't want you leaving that bed.

Don't worry. We've got it covered.

He's right.

You should get some rest. We'll get
you out of here as soon as we can.

Tom, was the mole behind this?

It's possible.

So many people killed.

Everything we worked
for destroyed.

We don't know that. It could
look a lot worse from down here.

Tom, I'm...

I'm really sorry
about Anne and Lexie.

I guess everyone's
been saying that to you.

That... That's okay.

I... I can't help feeling that it's my fault somehow.

I... You asked me to keep an eye on them.

Don't do that to yourself.
There's no way you could have

anticipated what happened.
Nobody could have.

It's just Anne gave me so much,

and to think that after
everything we went through,

she died alone
right back where we started.

After all we went...

Yeah, you can't
dwell on that, though.

Anne wouldn't want you to.

Yeah, you're right.

Good. Get some rest.

What are you laughing at?

Us.

All this work, and we're
right back where we started.

Just like this whole damn war.

That's funny to you?

Come on, Hal.

It's not that bad.

You think it hurts to be dead?

It's living that hurts.

Dead is easy.

I can't let that happen, Maggie.

I got to stop it.

Some things
are out of our control.

Yeah.

And I can't stand it.

This is my fault.
You understand?

Out of my control...
Maybe.

Sure, I had a bug.

And I don't remember it.

But I could have
planted a bomb...

Or bombs.

Whether I was
in control or not...

...I betrayed
everybody I cared about.

All these people died...
because of me.

You...

You're gonna die...

Because of me.

Hal...

I thought I could cheat death.

That's funny.

- Hey.
- Hey.

Nobody ever cared about me.

Not like you do.

If this is my time...

...I can't think of
anyone else I'd rather go out with.

And that's my choice.

Saline to direct the blast.

- Smart.
- You almost done?

Yeah. Just about.

- Oh, no.
- What's wrong?

There's a crack in the support beam
right over my head.

- Is that a problem?
- It depends on whether

its load-bearing capacity's
been compromised.

Our explosion could punch right
through to the stairwell

or it could collapse the ceiling
and bury the hall in rubble.

We'll need to rethink this,
perhaps find another location.

Great. We're right back
where we started.

What did you just say?

I said, "We're right back
where we're started."

- What are you doing?
- I was just checking.

Never mind that. Anthony's hurt.
I need your help.

- Oh, okay.
- Come on.

What happened?
Anthony, Anthony.

Hey, can you hear me?

Get up. Slowly.

Put your hands
above your head.

- Tom, what is this?
- Do it.

I don't understand.

- I want to see that med pack.
- Why, Tom?

'Cause it's just like the one
you sent with us to Keystone,

and I think you put
a tracking device in it.

No, I...
It was just a med pack, Tom.

- You're acting crazy.
- Am I?

You said it was sad that
Anne died back where she started.

Yes, it was the thought of her--

- You meant Boston.
- Of course. I was just--

I told Porter and I told Weaver
where she died!

I didn't tell anybody else.
How did you know?

I just assumed...

Why weren't you in the infirmary
when the blast went off?

Were you trying to get out
after you planted the bomb?

No! I was... No.
What...

Tom, you're frightening me.

What were you doing in Cochise's room
when I explicitly said

- that everybody should stay out?!
- He's a patient! I'm a doctor!

Then show me what's in that pack!

Don't you see
what the mole is doing to us?

You're the mole!

I asked you to
keep an eye on Anne and Lexie,

and you delivered them
right to Karen!

Okay.

I thought I'd hear more down here,
but I'm getting nothing.

I'm worried.

So am I. They...
they could all be dead.

Maybe that wouldn't be so bad.

What do you mean?

Dads lost it. I don't know
what Karen did to him.

But she did something.
It changed him.

If they did that to you,
you'd change, too.

- Hey, wait, wait.
- What?

Shh.

I don't want Dad to die down here.

I don't want Hal and Maggie
to die down here, not like this.

You're the only one
she can't kill.

You realize that?

I can die, too, Matt.

I can die just like you,
like anybody.

No.

Whatever happens,
you'll be there to see it.

No matter what.

Well, if you're not there,
I don't want to be there.

It's not up to you.

Do you think
there's anything after?

Like angels and heaven?

I hope not.

'Cause I know
where I'd be going.

Wherever you go...

...I'll find you.

A pipe.

Hello?!

What's that?

Hey! We're up here!

- It's Hal!
- Hal! We can hear you!

We're down here!
We're gonna get help! Okay?!

You stay. I'll go get Weaver,
get a crew down here.

- We're almost out of air!
- Just open the pipe!

- Okay? The pipe!
- I can't!

I'll give it a try.

That's good.

Hey, Ben.

Hey, Ben, we're okay.

We got the pipe open, Ben.

Okay, just... just hang in there!
We're coming!

We're gonna get help for you!
Don't worry! Don't worry.

I can't believe it's her.

She helped take the harness
off of Diego, patched me up.

She saved my life, too.
Nobody suspected.

- I should have.
- How, Tom?

She gave no indication
she had a bug.

I don't see
how it could have happened.

She treats dozens
of patients every day.

If one of them
had an eye worm...

We all have to be
more careful from now on.

- All of us.
- It's too late, Tom.

You blame Karen
for all your troubles.

Can't wait to
get your hands on her, kill her,

as if that will
make everything right.

But in your heart,
you know who's really at fault.

Tom, do not listen to that crap.

- That's the worm talking.
- Is it, Tom?

You're the one who insisted on
forming this alliance with the Volm.

And leading this war.

How many people have died
for your mistakes?

Anne... Lexie...

We're all gonna die
down here, Tom!

Karen's won. You should have
known you could never beat her.

She's always been ahead of you.

You've lost, Tom.

This room will be your grave.

Stay here.

Everybody, I found a way out!

Oh, fresh air!

Oh, man, oh, man!
The things we take for granted!

Oh. Hey, Doc.

Beam held, huh?

Yep, proves that low-probability
events do happen.

- Jeanne!
- Dad!

Hey! Hey!

What happened?
Are you all right?

- I thought you were dead.
- That'll be the day.

- We still on for dinner?
- You bet.

- We found the mole.
- What? Who is it?

Lourdes.

Lourdes?

Yeah.

How are you?
How did it go up here?

- We're alive.
- Where's Colonel Weaver?

Listen up!
Once the wounded are up,

- I need two search parties--
- Are you okay?

Lourdes.

We still got
a lot of work to do!

It was Lourdes.

I've known her
since the beginning of the war.

There's no way she's capable
of something like that.

Of course not.
It wasn't her.

Karen did this.

Somehow she managed to
get an implant in her.

And if we remove the thing,
you think these folks

are gonna be able to forgive her
for all the people she's killed?

I mean, half of them
haven't even forgiven me.

Maggie, I'm...

I'm sorry for
not bringing you on the mission,

for... for everything.

I never meant to hurt you.

I know.

But you got to promise me
one thing.

- When you go after Karen--
- Oh, you're coming with me.

I mean... If you choose to.

You bet your ass
I choose to.

We're gonna get payback.

As a team.

Yeah. As a team.

It's good to see you
back on your feet, my friend.

My comrades... gone.

Like me, they never
laid eyes upon their homeland.

And now to die here
in a strange land.

- Forgotten.
- I won't forget them.

Or why they gave their lives.

We'll make sure
they didn't die in vain.

It is too late.

You built your weapon in a bunker

designed to withstand
a Beamer attack.

Isn't it possible that it survived?

It most certainly did.

But it is buried
beneath that wreckage,

and all of my engineers are dead.

I do not possess the technical
expertise to operate it.

Well, maybe Dr. Kadar could help.

He's a very quick study.

I think he'd see it
as a bit of a challenge.

It is a long shot, at best.

What's the alternative?

Come on.

First, we bury our dead,

and then we start digging
like there's no tomorrow.
