Escape to the Chateau (2016–2019): Season 4, Episode 2 - Harvest and Birthday - full transcript

It's harvest time and Dick wants to make jam and turn pears into booze. Angel has ambitious plans for a floating geodesic dome over the moat. There is a special birthday treat for Dick.

(light music)

- [Narrator] In the heart
of the French country side,

a magnificent chateau
stood empty and abandoned.

It's 45 rooms,

12 acres of land,

7 out buildings,

and moat all left untouched.

But three years ago,
everything changed.

- Wow!
- Oh look at that.

- [Narrator] When an
intrepid British couple.

- Turn, turn, turn, turn.

Wow.
- Paid £280,000

to turn it into their
dream family home.

- Everything's gorgeous.

(camera click)

- It's so incredibly important

to bring it back to life.

- [Narrator] Since
they moved in,

engineer Dick Strawbridge (bang)

and his wife designer Angel

have put in heating
and hot water.

- Look at that!

Come here.
(laughs)

- [Narrator] And have
transformed over half the rooms

including three
sumptuous guest suites

for their weddings
and events business.

But despite their hard work,

their dream has
resembled a nightmare.

(crash)

- You should not be able to
see the sky out of your roof.

- Behind every romantic story

is the reality.

- [Narrator] Now it's
time for the next chapter

in Dick and Angel's
French fairy tale.

(lively music)

It's September and autumn
has arrived at the chateau.

The walled garden is
beginning to bare fruit

and will soon need
to be harvested.

The old stables destined to be

Angel's mum and dad's
granny flat before winter

is still not much more
than an empty shell.

And with four
weddings this month,

including their
first high tea event,

there's little time
to sit back and relax.

But today is a little different.

It's Dick's birthday

(laughs)

- I hope you enjoy it,

hope I enjoy it.

(laughs)

- [Narrator] And to
mark the occasion,

Angel has arranged
a special treat.

- I honestly didn't know
it was gonna be this big.

- It's gotta lift
us off the ground.

- [Angel] Wow.

- No they want us
now, they want us now.

- Okay.
- The passengers, that's us.

- [Narrator] To give Dick
a view of the chateau

he's never seen before.

- [Man] Here we go, here we go.

- And the sun's coming
through the trees.

- [Narrator] It's
carrying them 500 meters

up into the skies above
the Pays de la Loire.

- Oh dame.
- Look at that sun.

Oh my God with the
mist and everything.

- [Dick] That is
so, so beautiful.

- [Narrator] And from up here,

the views of their
fairy tale castle

and the landscape
in which it lies

are simply breath taking.

- Look at those hedges,

look at those trees.

It's absolutely beautiful.

The walled garden
looks great. (laughs)

The walled garden looks great.

Thank you darling, I really.

Well what a lovely breakfast.

- You know I was
actually quite nervous.

I didn't sleep very
well last night.

And it's remarkably

calm and majestic.
- Calm, tranquil.

- [Angel] Baby I can tick
this off my bucket list now.

- [Narrator] But what goes up.

- [Dick] Now we're coming in.

We're gonna touch, hold on
darling we're gonna touch.

We're touching.
- Oh touching.

Thank you.

Amazing.

- And I gotta tell you,

the first thing
that comes into mind

when you see the
chateau in the air.

- Wow, wow.
- Mine was wowed.

The setting, I gotta
tell ya it was fantasy.

It was complete fantasy.

Thank you so much.

That was wonderful.

(bouncy music)

- [Narrator] When Dick
and Angel first set eyes

on their chateau
three years ago,

Dick instantly fell
in love with it's

2000 square meter walled garden.

When the chateau was
built in the 19th century,

this garden would have produced
all the fruit and vegetables

for the Buglioni
family who lived here.

It's been Dick's dream to bring

this once fertile
ground back to life.

This spring, he
finally found the time

to dig and plant
out it's four beds.

(motor buzz)

- Getting a greenhouse,
getting a core frame,

starting producing our grub,

I'm very excited.

This is fun for me.

- [Narrator] Five months on

and dick's dream
is now a reality.

- [Dick] We've got
tomatoes, we got sweet corn,

we got courgettes.

Do we see if there ready?

Wow that's a nice courgettes,

put him in there.

Right sweetcorn.
- Sweetcorn.

- [Dick] Oh my
goodness, look at that.

- Wow.
- It's pretty.

- [Narrator] And
within the garden,

Dick's lovingly restored
Victorian greenhouse

is positively bursting
with homegrown produce.

- Lovely fresh rocket.

This greenhouse
is now productive,

and it's lovely in here.

The chateau is still
and the weddings

are keeping us busy,

rather than me having
time at my garden.

The structures here, it
takes a bit of maintenance

but you know,

we can get on top of it now.

This is just.

It's all good.

- [Narrator] And while Dick
tends to his greenhouse,

chef's Adam and Jai who
have come to the chateau

during the hectic
wedding season,

are harvesting the plum trees
with Arthur and Dorothy.

- Wanna pick a plum?
- Yes!

- So it soft?

No it's too soft.

You see this one,
you see it's soft?

- Put it in the bag.

- So you see (laughs).

- [Narrator] With four
weddings this month,

including their first
ever high tea wedding,

none of the fruit
will go to waste.

This season another of
Dicks and Angel's dreams

is set to be realized.

(bangs)

To have all three generations
of family living together.

And a year ago, planning
began in earnest

to convert the old stable block

into a granny flat for Angel's
parents Jenny and Steve.

- The entrance way,
the granny flat,

the dining room,
the sitting room,

all the rest that's bigger
than the average house anyway.

- Yes.

(laughs)

We're at the stage in our life

that we think we
can spoil ourselves.

- [Narrator] But the
stables were a far cry

from a retirement dream.

The last horse moved
out decades ago,

and it's been
derelict ever since.

(crack)

- It's gonna be quite special.

And it's gonna be the start

of Jenny and Steve
being here with us.

- [Narrator] In the summer,
the stable finally got

a perfectly level
concrete floor.

- It's lovely to see
it come together.

- [Narrator] Now
with work continuing,

the barn is undergoing

it's most dramatic
transformation yet

as Dick's builder mate Steve

puts up the internal
insulating walls,

creating rooms in this once
cavernous, empty space.

- [Steve] I think that'll
look quite nice actually.

(bangs)

- [Narrator] While
Steve plows on,

Dick is finding novel ways

to use up all the
produce from the harvest.

(bouncy music)

First up 50 kilos of
freshly picked pears.

He's been told of
a local distellir

who's licensed to turn
the pears into eau de vie,

a form of alcoholic
spirit made from fruit.

- First thing I gotta do

is turn my pears into juice,

then start making alcohol.

- [Narrator] Dick is
driving just 15 miles

to La Baconniere in Meijer

to meet Alain Trohel
and his family

who are experts in this
traditional distilling process.

Knowledge that's
been passed down

through four generations.

And living proof that eau de vie

could have life
enhancing qualities

is Alain's mother
who at the age of 94

still keeps a watchful eye
over the family business.

Dick is not off
to the best start.

(speaks foreign language)

He's left the
stalks on his pears,

and Alain is insisting he
remove every single one

before they begin pulping.

- This is basically
moonshine we're making.

I'm quite interested
to understand

the alcohol content of this

'cause I don't think
it would take very much

before this could be very scary.

The soft, squidgy ones are
obviously the best ones

for doing this.

So he's not very
impressed with some of my

less than ripe pears

'cause there's
not as much aroma.

But it's alcohol,
who we kidding?

(chuckles)

- [Narrator] With
Dick's pears prepped,

it's time for the next stage.

- So just stand in front of it,

it's gonna get splattered.

- [Narrator] Mashing
them into a pulp.

Once Dick has added
the sugared water

to the puled fruit,

it will take six to
eight weeks to ferment.

He'll then return
for the final part

of the distilling process.

(speaks foreign language)

(light bouncy music)

With his vat of pear slush

safely back in his kitchen,

Dick adds the final ingredients.

- [Dick] Fruit goop,
sugar and water.

- [Narrator] When it's ready,

Dick will return to the farm

for Alain to distill it
into a more potent spirit.

- Six to eight weeks time,

when that stops bubbling,

and me alcohol's been made.

- [Narrator] While Dick's
alcohol bubbles away,

Angel is getting into
her creative flow.

Over the past two
and a half years,

her artistic flair and
unique eye for design

have been imprinted onto almost
every inch on the chateau.

Form the private
family bedrooms,

to the three stunning
guest suites.

(calm music)

And even the front
and back stair cases.

But having made her
mark on the chateau,

she's now keen to put
some personal touches

to the granny flat before
her mum and dad move in

in a few weeks time.

- I'm gonna use a lot
of this French linen,

and I'm gonna make some pillows.

Basically just some
soft furnishings.

My mum's got her style you know,

she knows what she wants.

And I am

convinced that I am going to add

a little bit of French
chic to what my mum likes,

which is quite
contemporary now I guess.

And I've been wrecking my brain

thinking what can I
make for mum and dad

that they would like, you know?

And actually I'm gonna just

make something and if
they don't like it,

I'll have it.

- [Narrator] Back outside

it's not just the
walled garden that needs

keeping under control
at this time of year.

There's more than 300
meters of overgrown banks

along the moat that need
pruning back before winter,

and Dick's built
a floating pontoon

to help take on the job.

- This is a good
working platform.

- [Narrator] He's even
fitted a outboard motor

so he can prune to
his hearts content.

(chainsaw buzz)

- Tossing a caber.

I'm far too old for this.

The pontoon does exactly
what it's supposed to do.

Great working platform.

- [Narrator] It may be a
great working platform,

but now it's nightfall,

Angel has had
another idea for it.

(glass clink)

She's treating Dick
to a night-time

picnic on the pontoon.

- [Dick] It's quite a nice
little setting, isn't it?

- It's lovely yeah.
- It feels safe, doesn't it?

- It feels really safe.

- Is it? (laughs)

That's of a big rubber ring.

- [Narrator] But Angel
has a surprise for Dick,

a new idea for his
pruning platform.

- I think you've used it now,

and actually we should try

and make a little
bit money from it.

It wasn't particularly cheat.

Four--
- I know this,

this is meant to
last a long time.

- Yeah exactly, that's
why we should utilize it.

I am thinking of
having something

that a couple could sleep in

and like look at the sky.

Just what we're doing now.

Seriously I would pay money

to come here and
sit on this pontoon

and look at the stars.

Now come on, let's
turn the lights off

and look at the stars.

It's a shooting star.

Oh no, it's a satellite.
- No that's a satellite.

(cricket chirps)

(bouncy music)

- [Narrator] Autumn has
arrived at the chateau,

and this season, it's
the old stable block

that's undergoing the most
radical transformation.

Steve has now finished erecting

the insulating walls
for the granny flat,

and today Dick is
taking delivery

of the new specially
designed windows.

But converting a century
and a half old stable

into a home comes
with challenges.

- We need windows
to open inwards.

Jenny and Steve want some
insect screens on the outside,

plus in front it's normal for
the windows to open inwards,

and having high windows
in here is essential

'cause you can't reach all
the way out of the door.

Difficulty we got is
we've got all the lovely

old stone work around the
doors and the windows,

we have to butt up against that.

A good seal on your
windows and your doors

means you got high performance,

which means you don't waste
money heating the place.

So we're just having

to sort of go with the flow
in this nice, old building.

- [Narrator] But before
anything can move forward,

Dick and Steve need to make sure

that three windows and one
patio door actually fit.

- I tell you what,

it'd be a bit silly if I
had made this a bit smaller.

Actually looks like a window.

By the time this
little bit's done,

it'll be a house, or a flat.

- [Narrator] Bringing old and
unloved objects back to life

is a passion Dick and
Angel have always shared.

Having raided her secret
stash of vintage linen,

Angel's using these
classic French tea towels

to make a set of pillow
cases for the granny flat.

- Mum and dads house

is very contemporary.

I want to add a little bit of

kind of French chic to it.

So I'm giving mum a present.

I say mum 'cause mum would
appreciate it more than dad.

What's quite nice
about using the linens

is I don't need to over
lock or zig-zag stitch

to stop them fraying.

Because they're all
ready done, aren't they?

So makes sense.

If you pin it over the pillow,

you you know hopefully
are not gonna

be in a position where the
pillow case doesn't fit.

I'm not the best sewer,
I'm a simple sewer.

(slow bouncy music)

It's looking okay.

It's reversible.

Oh come on, that's
quite nice isn't it?

I'd pay 20 quid for
that in the U.K.

- [Narrator] Trying
to get the granny flat

ready before winter
is no mean feat

when there's also
a business to run.

Dick and Angel have a
wedding to cater for

every single weekend this month,

and for this busy period,

Dick is dusting off some
of his finest cookware.

- Copper is great
at conducting heat.

The heat spreads, it spreads
throughout the whole pan,

which means you uniformly
heat everything inside

'cause it just
spreads everywhere.

I knew that very well from
when I'm doing my plumbing,

if I heat a bit
of my copper pipe,

it gets hot pretty quickly
all the way along it.

That's what this is about,

bit of heat at the bottom

spreads out all the way around.

So for me it's,

it's a lovely
thing to cook with.

- [Narrator] Copper pans
need to be lined with tin

to stop the copper
contaminating the food.

But new pans are very expensive.

Dick and Angel
have got more than

50 pieces in their collection,

and every single
one was snapped up

for a bargain second hand.

But some pieces have lost
their all important tin lining.

- These all pail
into insignificance

when it comes down to this.

The main reason I'm here.

That's a proper roasting tin.

It's just special,

but I hate to think

what all that black
stuff is in there.

So I've never used it.

I'm looking at this and thinking

I can't wait to roast
something big in it.

- [Narrator] But Dick
and Angel have waited

five years to re-tin
this precious pan,

because it requires the skills

of a specialist artisan.

So this is one job Dick
will be happy to leave

to the experts.

- This'll obviously end up
being relatively expensive.

But compared to buying

a new, quality copper pan,

it's going to be a bargain.

- [Narrator] So
today Dick and Angel

are traveling an
hour and a half north

to the small Normandy
town Villedieu-les-Poeles.

- What I'm interesting in

is to see if we
can do ourselves.

- So you're gonna see if
you can see how they do it

so you can do it.
- Yeah.

- [Narrator] It's name
means town of God and pans,

and for anyone as obsessed
about copper cookware

as Dick and Angel
are, it's heaven.

- Atelier du Cuivre,
workshop of copper.

(light music)

- [Narrator] Copper products
have been manufactured

in this town for
more than 800 years.

Today they are just
two workshops left

that re-tin pans in
the traditional way

without the use of
modern machinery.

Dick and Angel have
bought their pans

to be repaired by master
copper craftsman Jean Lewis.

- [Dick] Jean Lewis?

(speaks foreign language)

- [Jean] You speak
little French?

(speaks foreign language)

(drills)

- Jean Lewis he's got energy.

You know we gotta go,

I should've brought more pans.

- He's running around like
a million miles an hour.

You don't see the
French do that.

- [Narrator] Jean Lewis
eager to give Dick and Angel

a quick demonstration
of how to re-tin a pan.

(speaks foreign language)

When the pan hits 232 degrees,

Jean Lewis adds fresh tin

which melts instantly.

- He's just rubbing a
bit of that in there

to melt it 'cause it's
the right temperature.

It's like soldering
but much more skill

involved in that, look.

- That is amazing.

- Clean?

Clean with water.

- [Narrator] The final
stage is polishing,

followed by a valuable lesson

on how Dick should be looking
after his pans at home.

- That's newly tinned, we
don't want the tin to rub off.

And Jean Lewis answer is

washing up liquid and
a sponge, no abrasives.

- The problem we've got is that

when you cook scrambled eggs,

it's hard to get off.

- How dare you?

How dare you?

- [Narrator] While
Jean Lewis gets to work

on the rest of the pans,

Dick and Angel hope
to find a bargain

in the copper shops for
which this historic town

is so well known.

Having bought only copper
pans second hand before,

the prices come as a shock.

- [Dick] How much did we
pay for our fish kettle?

- ,12, how much is it?

- Nearly 650.

Oh no I'm sorry, nearly 700.

- We've never, ever
bought a copper pan new.

And to be honest,

this place is lovely.

But all of the pan
that we've bought

are all still going strong too.

- [Dick] Yes that's
true, that's true.

- Oh aren't the bells lovely?

(bells ring)

- [Narrator] Back
at the workshop,

Jean Lewis has
finished re-tinning

all five of the pans.

- Dick, Angel I'm
finished just now!

(speaks foreign language)

- Wow, look at that.
- Like new.

- [Narrator] The battered old

roasting tray is unrecognizable.

- [Jean] Beautiful huh?

(speaks foreign language)

- [Angel] Thank you.

- [Narrator] For a
fraction of the cost

of brand new copper cookware,

Dick and Angel
have a gleaming set

of proper copper vintage pans,

re-tinned and ready to use.

- [Dick] They look
better than the ones

at the shop, don't they?

- [Narrator] With the pans
back in their chateau kitchen,

Dick's found himself
with an unexpected item

on his to-do list.

Angel has convinced him that

with a bit of creative thinking,

they can transform
his pruning pontoon

into a luxury
glamping experience.

- It's come in boxes,

so there's no clues what
are actually in the boxes.

I doubt there are any
instructions either.

- [Narrator] Today
he is taking delivery

of a huge flatpack glamping dome

to build on the platform.

(speaks foreign language)

And with he domes arrival
comes the realization

that Dick now has
to put it together.

- Last one I built
was 10 years ago,

and it was made of wood.

That was the greenhouse,

so it wasn't in (laughs).

- [Narrator] All
Dick has to do now

is find time in
their busy schedule

to assemble the dome.

But he'll need to find the
instruction manual first.

- This could be
very embarrassing.

This could be very embarrassing.

It stitches me up.

- [Narrator] But at over
five meters in diameter,

the structure will take
up almost all of Dicks

six square meter pontoon.

- Did anybody really think

that I was gonna gonna
keep my work platform?

I'm a soft touch,

I'm definitely a soft touch.

(uplifting music)

- [Narrator] It's late September
in the Pays de la Loire.

And with a wedding every
weekend this month,

Dick and Angel are
rushed off their feet.

Despite being so busy,

Dick is in his element
at this time of year.

- Courgettes keep growing.

This is a nice
little courgettes,

until I leave in which case
it becomes a huge marrow.

- [Narrator] He's
reaping the benefits

of his walled garden.

- [Dick] There's no shortage
at this time of year.

- [Narrator] And nothing
is going to waste.

- Big thing it's
not just it's fresh,

but the land it's been put on

hasn't seen a chemical,

hasn't seen a spray.

Hasn't seen anything
untoward on at all.

And we knew that and we
trust it because it's ours.

- [Narrator] What makes today's
wedding special for Dick

is that he's able to
christen his newly tinned

copper roasting pan.

- In we go, I'm happy

and I see that's looking lovely.

Look at the colors there.

The pan is exactly what
you need for service.

For the family, I'll just
have a whole meal in the pan.

But for when it comes to
things like the weddings

and the big functions,

this pan is good enough for
catering for 20 people easy.

So it does the job, and
it's nice and shiny.

Come on Jai.

(bouncy music)

- [Narrator] In spite
of their busy schedule,

Dick and Angel have
decided to tackle

their next big project.

The glamping dome
they've had delivered

still needs to be assembled.

- [Angel] A lovely
day to be doing this.

- [Narrator] But
the domes framework

is made up of more than
100 galvanized steel rods,

and Dick's feeling more
than a little daunted.

- I'm really hoping that box
has the instructions in it.

What is this?

Ang, in the kit we've got here,

we got a tin of
biscuits and some tea.

(laughs)

That's a very bad sign.

- [Narrator] Fortunately
it's not just

a box of refreshments.

Dick's found the all
important instruction manual.

- C, C, B, C, C, B,
C, C, B, C, C, B.

Okay I'm starting.

- [Angel] Are you
reading the instructions?

- Yes I've (laughs).

Yes darling.

- [Narrator] According
to the manual,

building the dome is
a three person job.

And may even require the
ability to walk on water.

- How the hell are we going to

pull it over that onto the moat?

(laughs)

This is an engineering task.

So I'm in charge, all right?

- [Angel] You need
to get this start,

getting the stuff out

and organized.
- Yes darling.

Yes mistress. (laughs)

- [Narrator] To make
assembly easier,

the three sizes of steel rod

have letter coded A, B and C.

- Right around the
circle, B, C, C, B,

C, C, B.

- [Angel] So B, C, C, B?

- Yeah, C, C, B, C, C, B,

C, C, B, C, C, B.

B, C, C, B.

C, C, the next one is a B.

- [Angel] A B?

Yeah.

- [Dick] B, A, A, B.

- [Narrator] After two
hours of pain staking work,

Dick and Angel's
dome is taking shape.

- I'm ridiculously excited

because it's actually
looking like a dome.

But we have got quite
lot of work to do still.

- [Narrator] But with
Arthur and Dorothy

now home from school,

finishing it will
just have to wait.

- Right I gotta this last one in

before the monsters come here.

- [Arthur] It looks
just like home.

- [Dick] Well done, well done.

- [Narrator] Meanwhile
over at the granny flat,

reinforcements have been called.

(slow bouncy music)

Three years ago, Lee and Kyle's

heating and plumbing
skills were vital

in bringing the chateau
into the 21st century.

- It's definitely
an improvement.

- [Narrator] Now they're back

to lend a hand.

- Got Lee and Kyle here
are mates from London

who have come across
the wife and girlfriend.

I'm actually getting
to much of their time.

- [Narrator] And the
chateaus transformation

since they were last
here is hard to believe.

- It is hard to really envision

how it would finish

two, three years ago.

But they've done
a really good job.

- Angel I've known
for a long time

and she's always been creative.

As is testament now when
you go up to the building.

Some of the stuff she's
done is fantastic.

- [Narrator] But there's
no time to remanence.

Steve is getting the
place water tight

by finalizing the windows,

whilst the boys set to work
sorting the plumbing out.

But it's not just the
practical elements

that Dick needs to think about.

Since the project first
began over a year ago,

it's been Jenny's dream to have

her very own walk in wardrobe.

- Dick I know you're gonna
come up with this for me.

What I want is a dressing room,

a proper dressing room.

- You want a walk
in wardrobe in here?

- [Narrator] But
whilst the granny flat

is 60 square meters,

there still isn't enough room.

So to make Jenny's
wish come true,

Dick has come up with
an ingenious plan

to build the walk in wardrobe
in the stable next door.

Now just days away
from completion,

even Steve and Dorothy
are chipping in.

- Are you excited we're moving?

- [Dorothy] Yeah we are

- The stables, we're gonna
see if we're gonna move in

is actually a house now.

It's a little granny flat.

The rest of the coach house is.

(laughs)

Hysterically, that
doesn't matter.

They got the walk
in wardrobe in here,

they got a bedroom,
they've got a bathroom,

they've got a separate loo,

they've got the
dining, sitting area,

and they've got a
little kitchenette.

Now before Jenny
and Steve move in,

what we need is
to make it pretty.

(light bouncy music)

- [Narrator] Making
the granny flat pretty

is currently in the capable
hands of Angel and Dorothy.

- Oh that's me.

- [Narrator] They've found
a box of old family photos

and having made sure
the originals are safe,

are making a special
gift for Jenny and Steve.

- That's your grandma,

and that's your great grandma.

Remember we went to see her?

Christmas and you--
- I don't see them

that well.
- I know 'cause

they're negatives and
from these negatives,

they'd make the photos.

- [Narrator] She's creating
a collage of family memories

by attaching the negatives
to this pair of lamps.

The idea is that when the low
energy lamps are switched on,

the images become illuminated.

- Like anything you
do for the first time,

I've no idea whether this
is gonna work or not.

Always like making
things for mum and dad.

Honestly they've got all
sorts in their cupboards.

This is actually
quite a quick task.

Obviously everything
takes longer

if you're doing
it with children.

- [Narrator] The PVA
glue will dry clear,

and the lamps will
then be ready to take

pride of place in Steve
and Jenny's new bedroom.

- So all I need to do now

is sit her for two days.

(chuckles)

They'd be dry in
about half an hour.

- [Narrator] Before Angel
can put the finishing touches

to the granny flat's decor,

she and Dick and a very
special event to prepare for.

In a few days time,

they're hosting their last
wedding of the season,

and it's their first
ever high tea wedding.

Angel has a clear
vision of what she wants

which for Dick means making
the most of the plumbs

collected from the garden.

- I got Adam and Jai here,

and I want some plum jam.

I would say I'm gonna
give them a lesson,

but they've probably
made it before.

I just want them
to make it my way.

- [Narrator] Because
the plums were harvested

late in the season
and are so soft,

Dick's using a special jam sugar

which contains pectin a
natural gelling agent,

which will help the jam to set.

- Early plums, if you have plums
that are early in the year,

they we're picked.

This is a sort of a
mid to late season plum

which is a very good
chance these ones

will need some
extra added pectin.

- [Narrator] And with 11
kilos of plums to use up,

there should be
more than enough jam

for the high tea wedding,

with a few jars to spare.

- [Dick] We're gonna
end up with quite a lot

of plum jam.
- That's good.

- [Narrator] After heating
on the hull for just an hour,

the jam has reached
a consistency

sticky enough for Adam and
Jai to start jarring up.

- It looks good doesn't it?

- Yeah really good.

And there's a hell of a vat.

(laughs)

- Oh the taste test is good.

(laughs)

That's a win-win.

- Done.
- 19.

- Afternoon tea is sorted.

- Why don't I just
keep it for us?

(laughs)

- [Narrator] As preparations for

the high tea wedding continue,

another project is
finally coming to an end.

Where one stood a place to house

the chateau's horses
and carriages,

now stands a modern,
one bedroom apartment.

Dick and Angel's dream
of bringing her parents

to live with the at
their fairy tale castle

has almost been realized.

Angel wants to
give her mum Jenny

a personal preview before
the rest of the family arrive

to see if she approves.

- It's utterly lovely.

- [Narrator] The
transformation is staggering.

With a modern finish
having been infused

with Angel's personal,
vintage touches.

- [Jenny] Is this French linen?

- Yes.
- You made it for me?

- Yes.
- Oh it's gorgeous.

- [Angel] These
are tea towels mum.

- [Jenny] No.

- It's strange it really,

it's so, it's so modern

but yet it just.

I have not stood
here and looked out.

- [Narrator] It's time
to put the kettle on

with the rest of
the family on route

for the house warming.

(light guitar music)

- Welcome.
- Welcome to Grandma's house.

- [Jenny] Welcome
my grandchildren.

What do you recon Arthur?

- [Arthur] Good I love it!

(laughs)

- [Angel] Now who
wants to go and see

grandma and granddads
walk in wardrobe?

- Me!

(light upbeat music)

- [Narrator] Jenny's
dream of having her

very own walk in wardrobe

has been made a reality curtesy

of some classic
Strawbridge ingenuity.

- I gotta say,

this size walk in wardrobe

for anyone's home

is pretty good, well
done Mr. Strawbridge.

- Yeah it's a big
old room, isn't it?

- Yes we'll have a cup of tea

at grandmas house.

- [Narrator] With the all
important seal of approval

from Arthur and Dorothy.

- Arthur, Arthur
is that my piece?

- No it's for later.

(laughs)

- [Narrator] Dick and
Angel will take a chance

to enjoy a moment of calm.

- Many happy years
in here you two.

You're very good health,

and be very British.

(lively bouncy music)

- [Narrator] But
they better keep

those tea cups at the ready

as they must now prepare
for the chateau's

first ever traditional
high tea wedding.

(lively music)

It's the morning
of Dick and Angel's

last wedding of the season.

But it's their first ever high
tea wedding at the chateau.

Having run a successful
tea party business

back in England
for several years,

Angel is in her element.

- We've got scones and rose
petal sandwiches coming out,

and this used to be
my bread and butter

for a long, long, long time.

It was four or five years ago

when I was a traveling
tea party business.

But I have a chateau, I
have two beautiful children,

and I'd be doing high teas.

It just looks so beautiful
and it's a woundery.

And it really is a dream.

It's just like, could cry.

- [Narrator] Meanwhile back
in the chateau's kitchen,

Dick is making
sure the food meets

Angel's exacting standards.

- The sandwich collection are

egg mayonnaise, ham
and English mustard,

cream cheese,
cucumber and salmon,

rose petal and honey,

brie, plum and walnut
that's what we're doing now.

And the plum is our plum jam.

- [Narrator] Dick's
using the plum jam

made with Adam and Jai
earlier in the week

in his brie and
walnut sandwiches.

- There's no real economy

in using our own plum jam.

It's just better.

- [Narrator] The plum jam's
not the only ingredient

Dick has had to
whip up from scratch

for Angel's high tea.

- You can't have high
tea without your scones,

your jam and your classic cream.

Thick, gloppy, fat content 55.

Angel said it's all right,

so I must have done
something right.

There we go.

- [Narrator] But
without warning.

- [Angel] Quarter
past 16 all ready?

- What time is it?

- Not got a clue.

- Five past 11.

- They're way early.

- [Narrator] Dick's suddenly
got a lot more on his plate

than just making sandwiches.

The wedding party have arrived

nearly an hour early.

So Angel and the team
distract their guests

with a glass of fizz.

Well Dick makes the
change from master chef,

to mater of ceremonies.

- Welcome to our
grooms, Jack and Sam.

Welcome everybody to
Chateau de la Motte Husson.

- [Narrator] The ceremony
goes without a hitch.

- You may kiss the groom.

(cheers)

- [Narrator] And before long,

the traditional tea
party is in full swing.

They've even laid on some very
traditional British weather.

And the Van de Vin, Dick
and Angles mobile bar

is also playing it's part.

- I'm making G and T.

It's Earl Grey
syrup which I made,

water since it's a tea
essentially and gin,

a G and T, cup of tea cold.

- [Narrator] G and
T chateau style.

- Oh it's really nice.

I like that, lovely.

- [Narrator] And Angel's
high tea sandwich formula

also appears to
have worked wonders.

- There's only one way to
make a perfect high tea

and that's Angel's way.

The very first time

that I made sandwiches with her,

I could tell her how
to just get it right

while I'm all ready doing it.

So I took notes.

You think you can't go wrong,

but oh you can.

- [Narrator] Pillow soft bread
with natural salted butter,

cut into perfect triangles.

- I just love that
you still remember

how soft the sandwich is.

It's really, really
good, free labor.

- Do you know what happens?

I had to write it down.

I had to write down
how to make a sandwich.

So it's not that I remembered,

I just looked up what
I've written before.

Anyway they're ready
for drinks now.

- Right.

- [Narrator] The wedding season
is over for another year.

It's been the busiest
at the chateau so far.

So Dick and Angel take a moment

to reflect of how they fared.

Fist up for discussion
is Dicks' former foe,

the Van de Vin.

- Right the investments
that we've made this year.

This is the biggest one?

- Without a doubt, this
is the biggest one.

Say what you said the other day.

No say it.
- I forget.

- It's good, it actually
is really, really useful.

- And it's been quite fun.

There's always been like a crew

of people that have stood
outside the bar the whole time.

- Just underneath there.

It doesn't matter
what the weather is.

They stand underneath there

and just sort of (mumbles).

We always said the last
wedding of the year

was going to be the one
that put money in the bank

to pay for our heating.

- Yup.

- Which I quite liked.

You know the fact, and
that put money in the bank.

So this year we can afford
to have the heating on

over the winter.
- Yeah we can this year.

Without you twitching

or making me wear.
- I still twitch,

I don't like wasting it.

- No I know and nor do I.

- So you have to
buy more jumpers.

Right I just need to,

doing the sums.

When do I retire?

- [Narrator]
Unfortunately for Dick,

retirement is not on the cards

while Angle is eyeing up quirky
new business opportunities.

Right now there's
a dome to finish

so they can offer
glamping on the moat

to guests in the new year.

- This is not going
to be easy at all.

- Okay.
- What it says

is get a pristine piece
of line, lay it out

and have three
people pull it over.

- [Narrator] The canvas cover
weight more than 50 kilos.

(sly music)

And with so little space
around the edge of the pontoon,

there's a real risk of
falling in the moat.

- [Dick] This is going to
be interesting, isn't it?

- [Angel] Should I
go and get waders on?

- [Narrator] As usual, Dick
is forced to improvise.

- Daddy's cleaver, isn't he?

Okay it's quite heavy.

It's what you'd be
doing one day here.

- It's a bit of a workout.

Oh good nearly there, well done.

Okay stop, who wants to
come and have a look inside

our geodesic dome?

How much you love it?

You love it that much?

- I love it a million!

- A million, you ready
go and look at the stars?

Yeah can you see any?

- No.
- No?

What do you mean no?

- [Narrator] Dick and
Angel's new glamping venture

is halfway to completion,

the final weddings of the year

have been successfully
completed,

and with Jenny and
Steve moved in,

the three generations of family

are finally living together.

But there is still
so much more to do

before winter arrives
at the chateau.

(uplifting music)

Next time the dome is all
glammed up for glamping.

Dick and Angel are
in foodie heaven.

- That is sweet.

- [Narrator] And there
are high rise hijinxs.

- [Angel] It is very,
very, very wobbly.

- Let's go children.

- [Angel] Mr. Strawbridge!

(calm music)
