Departure (2019): Season 1, Episode 5 - Grounded - full transcript

An unlikely source has proof of a conspiracy to cover up the truth about the crash, and the team scrambles to recover the black boxes.

-Previously:
- The DNA checks out.

He was the man in the raft.
- And-and were you able to find

any link to anyone named Moses?
- No, but he worked in aviation.

- Was this one of the people
that was trying

to get into the cockpit?
- Yes.

- A ruling of pilot suicide
would completely eliminate

the aircraft manufacturer's
liability.

- So who are you working for,
Ms. Freeh? MI5...

or Windsor Aeronautics?
- That's no stink bomb

you put in the back of his car.
- What do you mean?

Kendra! Move away from the car!

- Apparently
it was Malley's son,

but we've got our own man
out looking for him.

(sirens blaring)

(sirens blaring)

- What have we got?
- Male, 18. Head trauma.

Multiple abrasions.
B.P. 145 over 92.

- Let's get a central line.

- Driver says he dove
in front of his car.

(muffled chattering)

- A.J.! A.J.?

Is he going to be okay?
- He was clipped by a car.

No broken bones but there are
signs of concussion.

I've ordered a CT scan to check
for brain hemorrhaging.

Can we step away for a moment?

- Yeah. Sure.

Sure.

- We have to consider that this
may have been a suicide attempt.

- No.
- The paramedic said

A.J. jumped in front of a car.
The majority of suicide attempts

are tied to mental illness.
I have to ask:

Is there a family history?

- Yeah. His, ah, his father...
schi.... schizophrenic.

- And your son: any behaviours
consistent with his father?

- He's been behaving
a bit erratically recently.

Paranoid.

He was on the phone
with me earlier;

he said that somebody
was after him.

- After the CT scan,

I'd be remiss if I didn't
send A.J. on to the psych ward

for evaluation.
- You really think

that's necessary?
- I do.

- Okay.

(sighs)

- Spoke to
the responding officer.

There's no CCTV
where he was hit.

He's going
to be okay, Kendra.

- What's going on here?

- You've suffered a shock.
I'm giving you a mild sedative.

- It's okay. I'm here.
- You suffered a shock.
- No, you don't understand.

- Sh! Sh! Stop.
- Get away from me.

I saw them. I saw them.

On my computer.

- Saw who, sweetheart?

(musical theme)

(cellphone ringing)

Hi, Howard.

- How is he?
- [Doctors are doing CT scans]

and checking for
brain hemorrhaging.
- Oh, dear God...

I'm so sorry. Please take
all the time you need.

[We-we can move someone
from your team to take charge.]

- Look, I, ah, I-I just need
to see how A.J. fares and...

- Now, I know this is hard,
but you'll need to step away.

- Meaning?
- [Well, your son planted]

[an explosive device
in Bartok's car.]

It will no doubt lead
to criminal charges.

- Well, there must be some kind
of explanation for it, Howard.

- [Well, perhaps,
but you must see that it will]

damage the credibility
of this investigation.

- I'm sorry, Howard.

- In the meantime,

keep well, soldier.

[Take care of your son.]

- Thanks.

- Stay.

Stay as long as you need.
- No, it's okay. Go.

Go solve this thing.

(cellphone vibrating)
- Did you find it?

- I searched the car.
It's not in there.

- CCTV shows him coming out
of the tube with his backpack

5 minutes before you found him.
He must have dropped it

somewhere close,
so keep looking.

- How long do we have
to recover the black boxes?

- My algorithm estimates
18 hours

before the wreckage sinks
to the bottom of the trench.

- And any luck
with Hoffman?

- Ah, per BGA's personnel files,
he was consulting

on a routine upgrade.
- No social media presence?

- No. As far as we know,
he never made

any Twitter posts
or Facebook posts of any kind.

- He likes gaming, though.

His username is Hoffmaster69.

- I don't see
how that's going to help us.

- Hi, everyone. By now,
you've all heard about Kendra.

A sad turn of events, indeed.

But we promised her
that we'd push forward

and, in that spirit,
Levi will take her place.

Please, brief the team.

- Right.

Given all the information
we have,

our investigation will focus
on Captain Richard Donovan,

who planned it and trained
for it on a simulator.

- I have one problem
with your theory.

Where did the hole in the side
of the plane come from?

- We're still looking into
whether Donovan

could have committed sabotage
from the cockpit,

or the avionics bay.
- You don't have an explanation?

- Not yet. But, the point is,
Donovan's state of mind--

- Guessing at a man's state
of mind is not evidence.

- But, in order to believe
that Captain Donovan

was not responsible,
you'd have to believe

that his last words to his wife,

"Maybe you'll get your wish
and I'll die," a coincidence.

The flight simulator
in his lock-up...

A coincidence?
And look at this.

This was sent by a passenger
to a relative.

That is First Officer
Arthur Delaney

and Flight Attendant Leah Sims
trying to get into the cockpit

moments before
the transponder goes out,

just as Madelyn Strong...

...described.
- Captain Donovan,

can you let me in?
Open up.

- Donovan had, indeed,
locked the crew out.

The only conclusion
that makes sense

is that Captain Richard Donovan

committed a deliberate act
of mass murder.

- ...amphetamine,
calcium blockers,

beta blockers.
So far, all negative.

The puncture is unusual,
but without evidence

of a foreign substance,
we can't conclude foul play.

- Wait. You said before that,
uh, you gave Madelyn

something to stabilize
her heart rhythm, right?

- Hm. Amiodarone. Why?

- Could that induce
heart failure?

- Well, I suppose,
in a large enough dose.

- Test for that. Please.

- There you are.

- What are you doing here?
- Getting bandaged

after our little scrape
with death last night.

What? You're surprised
I use the NHS?

I support public health.

How's your boy?

- It's too soon to tell.
- Hm.

- Are you, uh...

You going to press charges
against him?

- This is the second time
your son has attacked me.

- I know. It's... it's been
a very difficult year for him.

- He lost his father.
It wasn't for him,

we'd both be dead.
And besides, this?

Nothing compared to Sokutsk.

- What's Sokutsk?

- It's the town
where I came up
as an aerospace engineer

manufacturing
commercial aircraft.

I was, uh, conducting
an engine test.

There was an explosion.
- You look all right to me.

- Oh. When I take my shirt off,
you will be quite appalled.

- So, um, if you're not here

to press charges against him,
why are you here?

- Like you said:

my reputation can use
a little rehabilitation.

Now, my team
has been trying

to arrange the dive
for the black boxes,

but your side
keeps putting up a wall.
- Yeah... Howard removed me

from the investigation.
- Removed you? Why?

- My son's attack on you
is seen as an embarrassment.

- You English are embarrassed
by almost everything.

Well, perhaps I should send
the submersible down myself?

- You can't do that.
TSIB has to control

the chain of evidence otherwise
the results will be invalid.

- I see. Well, then,

I will leave it up to you
to find a way.

(sighs)

- You think Daniel Hoffman has
something to do with the crash?

I'd be dead
if it weren't for him!

- Did you notice what he was
doing during the flight?

- He was on his laptop
the whole time.

Uh... I...

I can't remember
exactly what he was doing.

- Did he ever leave his seat?
Approach the cockpit?
