Conan the Adventurer (1997–1998): Season 1, Episode 15 - Shadows of Death - full transcript

Against his better judgment, Conan saves Karella from Hissah Zul's General Nor. Soldiers charge up, forcing Conan and his men, and Karella, to escape in a boat to the island of Vilayet, also known as the Island of Death.

After the
ocean swallowed Atlantis,

and before recorded
history, there was an age

when mythical kingdoms spread
across an uncharted world.

This was the age of Conan.

Enslaved as a boy, Conan
grew into a warrior.

He escaped to encounter
mystery, magic, and myth,

while forever facing the
ultimate master of sorcery.

Lover, friend, hero.

His destiny was to free the oppressed,

and become a king by his own hand.

Conan.

Curse these rocks and
the gods that made them

Rocks and sand, why do
you conspire against me?

Karela, queen of thieves, we meet again.

Conan help me.

I know you, you're Conan.

Your executioner if you
ever lay another hand on me.

The woman is mine.

The only thing that's
yours is your ugly fat face.

I am the general Morgot!

Any enemy of Karela is my enemy.

You'd risk your life as a man

and a warrior for this frigid slave?

You're the only slave
to your own pig desires.

Kill him!

He killed all my archers.

Some things never change,

where Karela goes, trouble follows.

We can talk about old
times later, friend.

But now, if Morgot's men
come and find him lying dead,

they'll come in thirst for our blood.

Soldiers are coming!

Soldiers are dead.

You killed a general,
you do know what they do

to the man that kills a general?

They can try.

There's a boat nearby, we
can go to one of those islands

offshore and hide there until
this whole thing blows over.

A boat?

Like a in the water boat?

Yes!

You're not getting me on
one of those haunted islands.

Take us there.

On the other hand,
the sea is in my blood.

Did I ever tell you about
my uncle the pirate?

I've heard strange things
about this islands of shadows.

We have faced great
dangers before, Conan.

I just hope we don't find out

why they call it the island of shadows.

The woman was unarmed,
how could she have killed

a strong man, like Morogt?

Only one person
could've struck that blow,

the one we seek, Conan of Sumeria.

The murderer must've fled
to the island of shadows.

We don't dare follow him there
Sergeas, the legends have...

The rumors are for fools and cowards.

Follow Conan we will.

And Hissah Zul will praise me doubly

for bringing him the head of his enemy

from the island which
is so greatly feared.

But the legends.

Old legends will die,

and new legends will
be made by me, Sergeas.

We will rename it the Island of Death.

Come on, bring it up here, come on.

That's it, get your back into it Zzeben.

I wonder what happened to the green mist

that we saw from villayet.

Maybe an illusion to
keep intruders away.

An illusion?

Created by whom?

See?

Nothing to be afraid of, just like any

other uninhabited island.

What is that?

What was that?

Perhaps a knave hiding in the trees.

What happened to Otli the cold-blooded,

nephew of the great pirate Otli the Elder,

terror of the high seas?

I'm hungry, and hunger
makes a man nervous.

What do you say we find something to eat

on this godforsaken island?

It would be best to get
out of plain sight anyway.

Not funny.

What was that?

And where is he?

Oh, there's
your strange screamer.

What's wrong Conan are
you afraid of birds now?

Birds that speak learned
the language from the humans.

The birds can carry
a call for generations.

I hope you're right and we're alone.

I'm not in the mood for company.

Look!

Oh Otli, not again.

Yes again, and he's
getting rounder every day.

Filling up your stomach again?

It's fruit, it's delicious.

Otli!

Otli!

I could've been flattened like an ant.

If you'd been any
busier stuffing your face,

you wouldn't have noticed the
whole mountain falling on you.

This rock was shaped by human hands.

No ordinary man could
lift that or throw it.

There's no sign of anyone
who could have thrown it.

Well it makes one thing clear.

Sleep when you eat,
and you're dead meat.

We're not alone on this island.

Guard the boat, it
could be our only escape.

Where are you going?

To learn the secret of
the island of shadows.

Conan, I think I'd rather
fight Hissah Zul's men.

Same to you, bird brain!

I'm feeling tired, can we rest a moment?

You can rest if you
want, but I'm going on

to find some more of this delicious fruit.

And risk your skin for
the sake of your stomach?

Maybe you're right, I won't go far.

Bring some of the fruit back for us.

All right!

So what did you do to make
Hissah Zul's general so angry?

I refused his crude affections,

and I refused to be his slave.

I'm not surprised.

He was, he thought he'd
bought me fair and square.

Bought you?

I never heard that.

I wandered into a village

where Morgot was flaunting his gold,

so I decided to relieve him of his burden.

I convinced a village elder to pose

as my owner and then sell me to Morgot.

And then I planned to escape and return

to the village and split
the profits with the people.

An interesting plan,

but a little bit stupid.

Well, I didn't know about Sergeas.

Who is Sergeas?

Morgot's second in command.

He is a ruthless and cruel man.

He's evil to the core.

He killed the village elder,
and then he stole the gold,

and then convinced Morgot
that I'd betrayed him.

So he's the one who follows us.

Yes, I'm sure.

Conan, Karela, look at this!

Look, it's the same stone
that nearly flattened me.

It looks deserted.

There are
legends of places like this.

Legends?

Yes, of course, legends.

Walking dead men, vengeful
gods, tails of terror.

Let's pay them a visit.

I have heard of fabulous
jewels, gold, gems,

left by vanished civilizations.

Sure, and all we need to do
to get it is be sacrificed.

We shall see, come on!

What can this be?

I don't know, maybe some sort

of sacrificial temple or something.

Nothing of interest, let's go back.

No wait, no wait!

What on earth?

By Kron!

Stone, they are only statues.

And the gold is real.

Don't.

Why not?

Statues can't hurt us.

I don't like this place.

There is an evil force here.

What you mistake for magic is simply

the stuffiness of an old building.

Men of stone don't need
gold, do they Conan?

Otli, wake up, hey!

- Wake up
- Well this I a fine time

to take a nap.

Although, I must've mentioned,

I'm feeling rather sleepy myself.

Hey, hey!

Maybe we could rest.

There's a spell on this room,

we have to get out of here, now!

No, let me sleep.

Something

is very wrong here.

While fools sleep, thieves work.

No, we're not going into
the jungle looking for them.

Conan said to stay right here,

and this is where we're gonna stay.

That's very
considerate of you!

It's so much easier to fight
just two of you at a time.

You'll never take us alive.

Alive, dead, doesn't matter to me.

Take them!

Zzeben!

Hold it steady.

Where is Conan?

Find him yourself.

Shall we kill them, Sergeas?

No, no, we might need them later.

But in the end, their heads, too,

will decorate Hissah Zul's chamber.

Yeah.

Take them.

Come on, on your feet.

Move!

No, get off of me!

No, wait, stop!

No please!

Let go of me!

Get off!

Stop it, stop, leave me alone!

Stop it!

Get off of me!

Leave me alone!

Stop it, no!

No, no, stop it!

Wrap it tight!

Stop it!

My father will punish you,

and his punishment will
be worse than death!

She's
dead, dead, he's coming.

What is it, what is it?

The statues, they're alive.

Inside, there were men

It's only a dream.

No, no, no it was real, I swear it.

It was only a nightmare Otli.

This place is enchanted.

Where's Karela?

Conan!

The statues, they're alive!

See, I told you!

Did you take any of the gold?

You don't understand,

they've become living things of stone

They're hungering for human blood!

Did you take the gold?

Of course I took the gold.

We have to leave this island right now.

Karela, give the
statue back his necklace.

What are you mad?

I wouldn't go back in there
to steal a kings ransom,

let alone give back a little trinket.

Let's go!

What could've fired so heavy a missile,

and then removed it so quickly?

Tell me rebels, what kind of war machine

does your friend Conan have with him?

You!

You never speak, tell us now
what weapons you possess.

He'll tell you nothing.

Well, perhaps pain will loosen his lips.

It may loosen his lips
but no words will come.

He's mute.

So you can't speak?

That must be very frustrating for you.

Imagine how difficult life will
be if you can't see, either.

Stop!

How can we have war machines?

We had only a small boat.

Then what caused that
shallow in the mud?

A stone as fat as your head.

Who fired it or who took it away, or how,

for that matter, I do not know.

Well, you're too stupid to lie.

So I will ask you for another truth.

Have you seen anyone else on this island?

The creature.

A thing that climbs cliffs like a spider,

and throws rocks as if they were leaves.

It wants us to leave the
island, leave or die.

Sounds as if your friends
are deeper in the jungle.

That's not a human voice,
that's the voice of a demon!

I am not a superstitious fool!

We'll follow those voices.

The only ones who will
die will be the enemies

of the great master.

Move on!

Bayu, Zzeben!

Conan!

Conan, our boat's been smashed!

With our boat destroyed,
we're stuck here!

We're doomed.

Fated to die, blocked
by those big green rocks

like bugs on a wall.

What's that on the cave wall?

He must've taken Bayu and Zzeben.

We'll follow him.

How?

We'll climb.

Sleep and climb, that's all we ever do.

I'd much rather sleep and eat.

Conan!

No, please!

Please.

Don't.

It has been so long since my
eyes have beheld such beauty.

That, that's the god from my dream.

And there was a girl, a beautiful girl.

And there were warriors tormenting her.

Yes, they tortured her.

They killed her because they wanted her.

They wanted her, but no
man can have a goddess.

She was my daughter, my only child.

I turned her murderers into stone

and bound them in the
temple with golden chains

around their necks.

None could set them free,
save those who's hearts

were as cold as the stone itself.

My heart is not cold.

But my will is weak.

Did you see the statues live again?

Yes.

But you escaped?

Would you stick around?

Will they leave the temple?

Once their chains are gone,

once they have again
tasted human blood, yes.

Only the words can stop them.

You smashed our boat.

I'm the guardian of this island,

if I fail to keep intruders
out, I must then keep them in.

There were two men guarding the boat,

what happened to them?

They were taken by men with dark souls

and symbols of evil on their chest.

Sergeas.

We have to find them.

I am an honorable thief.

And I'm a generous victim.

Come on!

Well, we'll just see how
long withered flesh can live.

Thirsty?

It's a shame you can't join the party,

but when Conan comes to save you,

and save you he will,
well, we'll invite him in.

But not you, it'll be too late for you.

You see, the sun will have fried you,

and you'll be dead.

How rude of us not to share our drinks

with our stony hosts.

I feel sleepy.

Perhaps we should drink no more.

Look!

The greatest treasure of all,
gold!

Hey, hyah!

Hey, hey!

Carmus!

Freeze, you coward, don't leave us here

to be torn limb from limb!

The silence is more
frightening than the screams.

I've always thought of your
silence as a blessing Zzebed,

but I wish you had the words.

Conan!

Stand back, or I'll
pulverize you to the dust!

I have never been
happier to see you, my brother.

Some of us lay around
in the sun all day,

while the rest of us fight.

Save your thanks Zzebed, we're
not out of the woods yet.

Nothing seems to stop them!

You can't kill what's not alive.

I suppose it's not too late to run?

We have to fight!

Peace be with you.

May your quest be fruitful.

You may return to my island as friends

once your quest has been accomplished.

What was he?

Some things we will never know.

Karela, what are you looking for?

I'm looking for the gold,
it must be here somewhere!

Sergeas' soldiers must've taken it,

set the statues free, weren't
you listening to the watcher?

Okay, it must be in the temple.

Someday, you will learn when to quit.

Even with the
green statues destroyed,

this island still rattles my bones.

I never want to see this island again.

So where will you go now, Conan?

I don't know, my mission
is still far from over.

Hissah Zul still holds
the land in his iron grip.

I want to fight at your side.

You don't like war.

Neither do you.

I still hold a certain
affection for you, Sumerian.

Maybe you should show it to me one day.

Maybe one day I will.

No, no!

Your men are dead, why
don't you stop fighting?

Because I've sworn to take
your head to Hissah Zul.

I don't think so!

Maybe you're right,

maybe I have lost my taste for fighting.

Let's get off this cursed island.

At least we're
finally alone here.

I think if I heard one
more voice, I'd faint.

I haven't told you yet
about my uncle, have I?

You know, the seaman,
the uncle, in the ocean!

You know with the boat, the big boat?

He was a sailor, I'm telling you.

You know, he sailed around and, you know?

You're judging me by
your rules, not mine.

Yours are wrong.

What difference does it make

if we take a little of
the stone man's gold.

It's stealing!

They're dead!

No man of honor steals from the dead.

I'm a woman.

Yeah,
sometimes, sometimes not.

Conan, that's not nice.

I know.

Give it to me.

What?

You know what.

No.

Oh yes, give it to me.

No.

Give it to me!

Okay, all right, all right, all right!

The necklace.

All right, all right, all right.

- What?
- By the shadows of death,

I've been cheated!

it's dust, nothing but dust!

No honest woman steals from the dead.

Only a fool thinks he can
make profit from magic.

They smashed our boat!

Now, what do we do?

Sergeas and his men
didn't just swim here, Bayu.

He's right, we can't sail,

we don't know anything about the ocean.

I got us here, did I not?

You did not, the
currents pushed us here.

Currents don't change direction.

I can't change into a
whale, at least not yet.

But I could fight like one,

No, I can't swim like a whale,

but I can leap like a gazelle.

Then leap yourself to the
mainland and send back help.

I told you both before about
my uncle, the great seaman.

I grew up on his stories.

I've heard stories about
birds, but I still can't fly.

I'm afraid we're in your
able sailor hands Otli.

Now what do you want us to do?

You mean it?

Yes, yes I mean it!

There's no turning back now.

I'm in charge, right?

Okay!

The first order I'm issuing as captain is,

find a boat!
