Chasing UFOs (2012–…): Season 1, Episode 1 - Texas Is for Sightings - full transcript

The saying, "Everything's bigger in Texas" proves to be true when Ryder, James and Ben investigate reports of mysterious lights spotted in the skies over two Texas towns.

NARRATOR: This time
on Chasing UFOs...

Male: Oh yeah.

Oh, they're just really
bright in the sky.

NARRATOR: For more
than a century,

there have been reports of
strange objects in the skies

over central Texas.

Female: I'm looking
at it right here.

Male: Yeah, what is that thing?

Female: I don't know.

NARRATOR: But in January 2008, a
mass sighting in the grasslands

of central Texas set
two towns on edge.

John Alexander: The reality of
the phenomenon is undeniable.

NARRATOR: Dozens of people
report seeing strange lights

moving in the sky.

Some even describe an object up
to a mile length with bright,

pulsating lights.

Ricky Sorrels: James, I saw
something so big that you could

probably land an airplane on it.

Steve Allen: It was giant.

Definitely wasn't an aircraft
that we know of or any flares.

NARRATOR: Determined to find
an explanation, Ryder, Ben,

and James travel to the lone
star state to investigate

the encounter.

Erin Ryder: It looks almost
like a saucer in the sky.

NARRATOR: Was it an
optical illusion?

Was it an airplane?

James Fox: Now that was
one hell of a flyby.

NARRATOR: Or was it something
from another world?

Steve Allen: All we
know is what we saw.

What it is, I don't know.

Erin Ryder: That looks like
a EXPLETIVE flying saucer.

Wayne Mattson: What we have
here is not any Earthly craft.

Ben McGee: Did you see that?

There's usually a more
conventional explanation for

unidentified things that people
are seeing if you take the time

to look for them.

Erin Ryder: For the
first time in my life,

I'm caught believing that the
possibility of UFOs is all

too real.

James Fox: For me to be out
here looking for evidence,

this is it.
This is what I live for.

This is what I've
been dreaming about.

Erin Ryder: Oh my God!
James Fox: Wow!

Erin Ryder: Alright guys, let me
pull up our video to review...

We're on our way
to Stephenville, Texas

to meet with a local
police officer who says that

he's captured video that is
similar to what dozens of people

reported seeing on the
night of January 8th, 2008.

So you see there's
a light pulsating,

looks like it's changing
colors from pink to blue.

It's something that you can't
definitely say is terrestrial.

One video is not going to
convince me of anything.

We need to go there,
speak to Officer Gaitan,

and see what really
happened that night.

James Fox: The object was either
craft with lights or the lights

without a craft.

I'm a little perplexed
by this video.

I can't tell if it's a single
light or if it's a light

attached to a much larger craft
as many of the witnesses in

Stephenville claim to have seen.

So I want to find out from
Leeroy Gaitan what his opinion

is on this video.

Ben McGee: He saw lights.

But, you know, did he
have a frame of reference?

Was he able to provide
us a frame of reference?

I mean, at this point it's a
good starting point to see if

you can collect some more data
about whatever it was he saw.

I'm really interested in talking
to the officer to see what it is

he thinks he saw with his own
eyes compared to the footage,

because the footage
is really ambiguous.

I don't have any sense
for the angle of view,

how high off the ground
he thinks it was,

how zoomed in the camera is,
and all that stuff is really

important to figuring
out what this object is.

Erin Ryder: I can't
wait to grill this guy.

James Fox: OK.

Erin Ryder: I'm going to go in
and I'm going to be bad cop.

I need somebody to be good cop.

Ben McGee: That's James Erin
Ryder: What are you going to be?

Ben McGee: Other bad cop?

James McGee: Hey,
very nice to see you.

Leeroy Gaitan: Nice
to see you, James.

James McGee: This is Ben.
Ben McGee: Ben McGee.

Leeroy Gaitan: Leeroy
Gaitan, nice to meet you.

Ben McGee: Very
nice to meet you.

Erin Ryder: Hi, Ryder,
nice to meet you.

Leeroy Gaitan: Nice
to meet you Ryder.

James Fox: So, Leeroy, can you
just tell us what you saw.

Leeroy Gaitan: I don't
know what it is that I saw.

I had been working
in Stephenville.

On my way home, there
was an alarm call.

I was close, so I decided I
would go ahead and show up.

I got out of my car and
leaned up against my hood.

I saw an object towards
the Southwest sky.

It was strange.

Much, much larger than a storm.
But it was somewhat pulsating.

I came up with the
wild idea of hey,

why don't I try to capture
this object with my dash cam?

After playing for several
minutes with my camera,

I was able to zoom
in on this object.

You can see it's like a ball of
energy that's just pulsating.

Florescent, blue
flashing lights.

It was like a
round, I say object,

I don't even know what it was.

James Fox: How fast was
it moving in the sky?

Leeroy Gaitan: It
was roughly, I mean,

say it's here and it's moving.

If it would have been a
certain planet or a satellite,

I would have thought that
I'd have seen it again.

And I looked, I mean, I'm
telling you, I looked.

Ben McGee: Yeah, of course.

Leeroy Gaitan: Because I wanted
to get some better video and

we never did see it again.

James Fox: Have you talked to
other officers that maybe have

seen the similar thing?

Leeroy Gaitan: I have. I've had
actually several approach me.

James Fox: They
saw something too.

Leeroy Gaitan: Two of them
actually saw what they described

as a craft.

And very credible officers.
I've worked with these officers.

I mean, they're not rookies.

I've had bankers, teachers,
politicians that have told me

and say hey, we saw
what you saw that night.

Erin Ryder: I thought Leeroy
was really interesting.

You know, here's a man that saw
something and then ultimately

tried to gather evidence.

James Fox: You know,
keep in mind, you guys,

it wasn't just Leeroy
Gaitan that saw this.

It was probably hundreds of
witnesses throughout the

Stephenville-Dublin area.

Erin Ryder: You know, I think a
great idea would be to try

to get as many stories from as
many eyewitnesses as we can in

one place.
Ben McGee: Absolutely.

I mean, if we had the
opportunity to get a lot of

these witnesses together, maybe
we could start to extract more

details and then try to zero in
on what it was they were seeing.

Erin Ryder: In Dublin, we put
the word out that we wanted

to talk to people who
shared this encounter.

Luckily, in small towns,
word tends to travel fast.

Ben McGee: I've never done
a town hall meeting before

so I'm a little
apprehensive myself.

Not too sure what to expect.

And the more
information that we get,

the easier it will be for us
to determine what it is people

are seeing.

Erin Ryder: Thank you
guys so much for coming.

We have a really great turnout.

We're so happy that you could
come and share all your stories

with us.

We're here to really try to
get down to the bottom of

what happened here.

My name is Erin Ryder.
People call me Ryder.

Ben McGee: My name is Ben McGee
James Fox: My name is James Fox

and I'm dying to hear
what you guys have to say.

Ben McGee: How many of
you, by a show of hands,

have ever seen something in the
sky that they couldn't explain?

James Fox: Wow.
Erin Ryder: Yeah.

James Fox: Substantial.

Erin Ryder: Is there anyone
that would like to share

a story with us?

Witness 1: I'm Lori Smiskel.

It showed up about 9:00 and they
literally put a show on for us.

They were almost like they were
doing Egyptian-type patterns in

the sky.

Witness 2: I was coming home
with my mom and she was like

do you see those lights?

and these lights were flashy,
just moving real fast all over

the place and then another one
slowly appeared and then another

one slowly appeared.

There were five
orange glowing lights.

Witness 3: I was looking up in
the sky and there these four

really bright orange lights
and they were really big.

There was one there,
there, there, and there.

And they just flashed like
that for a few seconds.

And then they just stopped
and then it was just gone.

Steve Allen: My name
is Steve Allen.

We saw it January the 8th.

I have an airplane at
Stephenville and I fly that area

quite a bit.

It had four sets
of lights on it.

Definitely wasn't an aircraft
that we know of or any flares.

Looked like to me like it was
a half a mile wide and probably

a mile long.

Witness 5: We were
sitting outside;

I looked up and through the Oak
trees, these really bright,

white flashing lights.
The speed is unbelievable.

There is not going from
a point A to a point B.

They move beyond speed that we
comprehend as far as aircrafts

that we have seen.

I know it's not a
satellite, we've seen it.

We've seen the international
space station fly over.

We've seen jets, we've seen
airplanes: small, large,

military, helicopters,
you name it,

I can pretty much tell you
yes, I know what that is.

Ricky Sorrels: My
name is Ricky Sorrels.

Lived here my whole life.

First off, I'd like to
thank everyone for coming.

When this happened to me I felt
so alone and now you walk in

the room and so many people from
around the community are here.

It makes you feel good. Um, ok.

I look up, this thing is so big.

It's about 300 foot above me.

I started looking to my left to
see how far over it was at and

I couldn't see the edge.

I didn't know what
to think of this.

I didn't believe in this.
Never had been taught this.

It's taken me a long time
to come to grips with it.

Kacey Simmons: My
name is Kacey Simmons.

It was about 8:35 that night.

I still kind of get shaken
up talking about it.

Just for some reason I was
opening my door and I just

happened to turn around
and look back across town,

across the treetop.

All of a sudden, to the left,
I seen just a bright flash

or something.

They went one, two, three,
they came on in that order.

Kind of like
headlights on a car.

They're just perfectly round
and I caught just part of that

on video.

BEN: During the town hall, this
guy Kacey stands up and he

actually has video that he wants
to share with us in real time.

This is pretty exciting.

Kacey Simmons: Yeah, it kind
of happens pretty quick right

there. Yeah.

This is when I first walked down
the stairs and I seen something

in the corner of my eye.
I had my camera.

James Fox: Whoa!
What the heck was that?

That's incredible.

Kacey Simmons: That was
directly over our house.

I just happened to catch that.

James Fox: Kacey shows this
video and it's really weird.

Were they making any sound?

Kacey Simmons: No.
Not at all. No.

James Fox: I mean you've got
like 8 lights stringing out and

it's very similar to other
encounters that people are

saying they saw.

Did that look
familiar to you guys? Yeah?

This, to me, clearly
states that, hey man,

this is a hot bed for UFO
activity and these people

want answers.

Erin Ryder: I've got a little
bit of a treat for you guys.

It's a song that is associated
with the mass sighting and it's

actually called Heading Down To
Texas To See The UFO by Danny

and Harlin.
James Fox: Really?

So was Danny actually at
the town hall meetings?

Ben McGee: Oh.
Erin Ryder: They both were.

I think it could be our
theme song for this Texas

investigation here. Get ready.

Danny-Harlin Song: I was
watching the news last Saturday

night.

The people down in Texas
saw a great big light.

Yeah, I'm heading down
to Texas to see the UFO.

We're heading down to
Texas to see the UFO.

Erin Ryder: Since
the 2008 sighting,

Kacey says he's seen tons of
other strange lights in the sky.

So we're going to meet him in a
remote area where he's had the

most recent sightings to try
and capture some that activity

ourselves.

Ben McGee: Hey Kacey
Kacey Simmons: Hey.

Erin Ryder: Thank you so much
for bringing us out here.

Kacey Simmons You're welcome.

Erin Ryder: So the video
was really intriguing.

And that's just one of
many that you've captured.

Kacey Simmons: Yes.

From that night on we were
pretty hot and heavy into sky

watching. Pretty regular now.

I have my camcorder by the back
door charged up all the time

ready to go.
Ben McGee: Good man.

James Fox: I know it's
difficult to say what it was,

definitively.

Could you tell us
what it wasn't?

Kacey Simmons: It wasn't jets.

Wasn't flares.
Wasn't helicopters.

Because I mean, at that
time of night in Dublin,

it's kind of like a ghost town
after about 8 or 9 at night

every night.
So you'll hear anything.

You'll hear airplanes
from a long ways off.

This didn't have any
noise whatsoever to it.

And he got nearly right
over the top of my house.

So if I was going
to hear something,

I would have heard it, you know?
It was just really strange.

I wouldn't even guess
at what it could be.

I mean, I have no idea.

Erin Ryder: Kacey's had numerous
sightings all over this area.

So we're just going to go out to
the location of the sighting and

just get an idea of what's
going on in the skies above

Stephenville.

James, you can
open that case up.

James Fox: So, uh, Kacey,
you've got a rifle with you.

What's going on with that?

Kacey Simmons: Well, there's a
lot of wild hogs around here and

I don't want to be stuck
out here without one.

Erin Ryder: Oh boy.
Wait a minute.

If you have the rifle,
what do we have?

Ben McGee: Harsh language.

James Fox: That's
what scares me.

Alright you guys.
Well good luck.

Let's hope we spot something.

Ben McGee: So Kacey.
Kacey Simmons: Yeah.

Ben McGee: In the video
that you showed us,

you've got the blinking lights,
and then there is the weird

twinkling sort of period.

Did that look like to your eye
the way it looked on the video?

Sort of like.

Kacey Simmons: Yeah, pretty
much I tried not to zoom in

on it at all.

You know, I was trying to keep
it just like I was seeing it.

Ben McGee: Yeah.

Kacey Simmons: I spend like a
whole lot of time nowadays

looking up at the sky, you know?

I think if people would just
take a little time out of their

schedule and look
up for a while,

they might be surprised what
they'd see around here.

Ben McGee: I think a lot of
people just don't look up at

the sky anymore.
Kacey Simmons: Mmhm.

James Fox: Creepy in here.
Erin Ryder: It's really creepy.

James Fox: What was that one
horror movie they shot like

Blair Witch Project.

This kind of reminds me of that.

Erin Ryder: Yeah, we don't
want to get lost in here.

That's for sure.

It's like pitch black.

James Fox: Shhhhhhh Erin
Ryder: You hear something?

James Fox: Yeah...shhhhhhh.

Erin Ryder: What the
EXPLETIVE was that?

James Fox: I don't know.
They got wild boar out here.

They're apparently
up to 400 pounds.

Dude, I am not EXPLETIVE
going over there.

Erin Ryder: Something's
right there.

James Fox: Shine
your light that way.

To the left. To the left.
Right there.

I can't tell if it's moving
away from us or coming at us.

I'm not kidding.

If it charges us, I'm going
to run my EXPLETIVE ass off.

I'm serious.

James Fox: It's
right there, man.

It's on the other
side of those bushes.

If it's got babies around,
it'll charge your ass.

Ben McGee: What was that?

Kacey Simmons: I don't
know what that was.

I don't know if it was like
a growl or a weird howl

or something.

Ben McGee: Sounded kind of like
a cow that was very upset.

Kacey Simmons: Yeah, or
getting hurt or something.

I don't know.

Ben McGee: James and Ryder,
this is Ben and Kacey.

We just heard a sort of vaguely
animal screaming noise and was

wondering if it was you.

How are you guys
doing over there?

James Fox: Well, I'll
be honest with you.

I was a little creeped out by
the boar and now I'm just trying

to get the hell
out of these woods. Over.

Ben McGee: If by the boar,
do you mean you had a boar

encounter?

James Fox: I don't know.
75% certainty.

I mean, it was like right on
the other side of the bushes

and it sounded big.

Dude, I was scanning the area
looking for a tree to climb.

I mean, I was that freaked.
Seriously.

Ben McGee: Alright, roger that.

It's probably a good thing
you guys hightailed it.

We're going to keep
pushing on here.

Keep us apprised on your side.

James Fox: Copy.

Erin Ryder: Oh good.
It opens up.

Doesn't it look like there's
a light on the horizon right

there?

James Fox: What the
EXPLETIVE is that?

Erin Ryder: It's changing sizes.

What the EXPLETIVE
are we looking at?

James Fox: I'm going
to get down like this.

Alright, let's see
what we've got here.

I don't know what it is but I
guarantee you its not a planet.

Now it's like three little
dots in a straight line.

This thing's really weird.

Erin Ryder: Ryder
for Ben and Kacey.

Ben McGee: Ryder, this
is Ben and Kacey. Go ahead.

Erin Ryder: What's your guys 20?

Ben McGee: I believe
southeast of your position.

Erin Ryder: Our small camera
and binoculars were picking up

this really strange object.

And it kind of looks like it
goes from being a full circle

or like an orb to kind
of like an oblong shape.

Ben McGee: That's wild.

We're going to head over to
your way and take a look at

what you're looking at.

One line broken into
three and back to one?

I mean that sounds an awful lot
like what you're talking about,

right?
Kacey Simmons Yeah, it does.

Ben McGee: Kacey, I
found the clearing.

Kacey Simmons OK.

Erin Ryder: Hey guys, over here.

So we've seen this thing go on
and off in kind of a strange way

and kind of glow.

It definitely seems terrestrial
to me but there are a lot of

properties to it that don't
match just a regular light.

Ben McGee: Let's
ask the expert here.

Kacey, what does that
look like to you?

Does that look like any of
the other sightings you had

or does that look more.

Kacey Simmons: Yeah.
The color and the shape, yeah.

Erin Ryder: So far our
investigation is only deepening

the mystery.

Our next step is to meet with
an ex-military official to talk

to him about this mass sighting.

James Fox: We're going to meet a
colonel in the military who has

clearly and unequivocally
stated that UFOs are real.

That's very exciting to me and
it's not every day we get the

opportunity to meet someone at
this stature with such a bold

position on UFOs.
Ben McGee: Look, don't forget.

UFOs are just that.
They're unidentified.

It's anything that's
unidentified in our airspace.

Even the stealth fighter
was considered a UFO before

its existence was disclosed
by the air force.

James Fox: I'm very, very much
looking forward to meeting

this guy.

Erin Ryder: Yeah, he sounds
right up your alley James.

I think you guys are
going to be BFFs.

James Fox: Colonel Alexander
says he was part of

this unofficial panel that
investigated UFOs and he had

access to information
the public doesn't.

And we want to get
his perspective.

If you could stand at a podium
on world television to talk

about UFOs, what would you say?
John Alexander: It's simple.

UFOs are real and we need
to make it permissible for

scientists to study them
without risking their career

or livelihood.

James Fox: That's a pretty
bold statement from someone

in your position.

John Alexander: I don't know
if it's bold. It's accurate.

The problem is that we do not
allow our best and brightest

minds to get involved in it
without great personal risk.

The body of evidence
says something's there.

Now, what that is is a
totally different question.

Ben McGee: Some people have
claimed that we're moving from a

period of small-scale individual
sightings to larger scale mass

sightings.
Would you agree with that?

John Alexander: There have been
mass sightings kind of all along

We could go back to
Washington in the 50s.

We do know mass hysteria
does play a role.

We have to understand
those sorts of things.

It is contagious.

But when you start correlating
that with photographic data that

can be substantiated, then you
start to get cases in which

the hard data say there was a
physical event that took place

at that time and place.

James Fox: Well what about the
sighting in Stephenville Texas

or Dublin Texas area?

John Alexander: In my view, it's
pretty high on the credibility

list.

What's interesting about this
is the number of witnesses that

seem to be pretty high quality
that have come forward and said

definitely saw something.

We're talking a mile across.

They could see the structure,
and again, we're talking big.

Ben McGee: Hmm.

James Fox: Do we have anything
like that in your opinion?

John Alexander: No.

That there was a phenomenon
going on I think is undeniable.

Ben McGee: So according
to Jonathan Alexander,

there's a lot of weight that you
can put behind mass sightings

because it allows you to cross
reference people's stories

and tease out what the truth is.

So with that in mind, we're
going to the Stephenville

Airport.

We're going to meet with another
one of the witnesses we met

at the town hall
meeting, Steve Allen,

and we're going to talk to him
about the sighting he had at

his friend's house at sunset.

Erin Ryder: Hi there.

Steve Allen: Hey.
How you all doing?

Steve Allen.

James Fox: Steve Allen
is a pilot and pilots are

better-trained observers to
know what's conventional and

unconventional that flies
around in our airspace.

I completely trust his
credibility to describe to me

what he saw that night.

Erin Ryder: From
the very beginning,

could you talk us through your
sighting and what you saw?

Steve Allen: Sure.

This was not a shooting
star out in the atmosphere.

It was up close and personal.

As it came past us, it had seven
lights flashing across the back.

Never seen any lights
that color nor that size.

The lights were the size
of a small pickup truck.

So they all stayed at the same
altitude and the same distance.

Ben McGee: How big was it Steve?

Steve Allen: My estimation is
it's about a half a mile wide

and a mile long. It was giant.

Ben McGee: Even for pilots,
it's really hard to determine

a distant object's size, it's
altitude, it's true distance,

particularly at night.

So we're going to send a couple
planes up and test the concept

that maybe the mass sighting
here in Stephenville was a case

of mistaken identification.

Can multiple planes flying
in formation be mistaken for

a single object?

You see how tightly
they're flying?

James Fox: I do.

Alright, it looks like two
planes almost attached together.

Ben McGee: Witnesses have
described the objects that they

see as being silent while
they move so I'm going to have

our planes fly right overhead
and see if we can hear them.

Erin Ryder: OK guys, we are in
formation. Do you guys copy?

James Fox: Copy that. We are
tracking you right now on

sticks. Those guys are
a tight formation.

Ben McGee: So imagine this is
at night and you've got running

lights and beacons.

And then imagine if one of
the two planes peeled away,

it would look like there's one
object with multiple blinking

lights.

It suddenly becomes two.
And then it's one again.

So flying in formation, our two
aircraft looked like one single

object, and if this is something
we can see during the day,

it's not hard to imagine
multiple aircraft flying in

formation at night could be
mistaken as one single craft.

James Fox: If they were
coming towards you,

with their lights on, it
could theoretically look like

one craft.

Ben McGee: These
guys are good pilots.

Erin Ryder: Ben and
James, do you guys copy?

James Fox: Copy. Yes.

Erin Ryder: Do you want to see
a formation closer to you guys?

James Fox: Love to.
Erin Ryder: Ok. Copy that.

James Fox: Ben, they're coming
in directly from the South at

about 50 degrees.

James Fox: What's
your altitude Ryder?

Erin Ryder: We are
4000 above the ground.

James Fox: OK.

So we got them 4,000 feet above
the ground and listen how loud

these planes are right now and
Steve Allen: said he couldn't

hear a thing and it was up
close and personal, over.

Erin Ryder: Copy.
You can hear us loud and clear?

James Fox: Very loud. Yes. Over.

Ben McGee: At 4000 feet, the
planes made a lot of noise.

There's no mistaking that.

So while we were able to show
that multiple aircraft flying

in formation can be mistaken
as a single object,

you're not going to have an
aircraft come right over you

and not make a sound.

James Fox: Alright Ryder,
I think we got a mission

accomplished.

Why don't you bring
her in for a landing. Over.

Erin Ryder: OK guys.
We're coming in.

Oh my God!

And I just lost my lunch.

James Fox: Now that was
one hell of a fly by. Over.

Ben McGee: Looks like Ryder got
a dose of her Vitamin G today.

James Fox: Touchdown.

Ben McGee: Roger James.
The Ryder has landed.

Erin Ryder: Even with
our aerial test complete,

we still have loads
and loads of questions.

So our next step is to meet with
a man who says he's videotaped

an unidentified flying object
just three months after

the mass sighting.

April of 2008, in the morning,
a man named Mauricio Ruiz.

captured something in the sky,
above his neighbour's house.

It looks almost like
a saucer in the sky.

James Fox: Almost?

Very rarely do you have video
footage where you have broad

daylight, you have
points of reference,

you have something
that's clearly in focus,

so this gives us a lot to go
on and I'm very much looking

forward to meeting this
guy and finding out more.

Bird just flew across
the screen right there

Erin Ryder: There's
a lot of context to this.

We're really able to get an
idea of what size this is.

Unfortunately, it
looks kind of small.

The interesting thing about this
video is that it was shot just

three months after
the mass sighting.

But it doesn't really resemble
the object that the people in

Stephenville say that they saw.

James Fox: Were there
any other witnesses?

Erin Ryder: As of right now,
he says no one else has come

forward.

Ben McGee: I'd be interested
to see what he thinks

the dimensions are.

So right off the bat I'm a
little suspicious of this video

because the geometry looks all
wrong to me so I really want to

talk to the guy who shot it and
see what it looked like to him.

Mauricio Ruiz: The
particular day I remember.

It was kind of misty, foggy.

But the object itself, something
I've never seen before.

It caught me off guard.

I just couldn't relate to it.

And then something just came
to me - go get my video camera.

So I ran as fast as
I could to prove something,

what I have seen.

But when I started video
taping, I just froze.

Made me nervous.
Made me nervous.

It was something that
you don't see everyday.

Can't even seem to get what
material it was made of.

And then, as I was videotaping,
the object started slowly,

slowly moving.

And eventually,
started to fade out.

James Fox: Did it
slowly move out?

Mauricio Ruiz: Slowly.

James Fox: Slowly get
farther and farther away?

Mauricio Ruiz: That is correct.
It never moved fast.

It kept the same pace.

Ben McGee: So, did it look like
the object disappeared behind

a cloud bank?

Mauricio Ruiz: It just
faded out of my eyesight.

Ben McGee: To me, it's still
clearly within the realm

of possibility that this is a
little remote controlled craft

that somebody is flying
around the neighbourhood.

James Fox: What do you honestly
think you've captured on film.

Mauricio Ruiz: Well, what's
on the film is a flying object

that was hovering,
that was noiseless.

I know somebody has
to be behind it.

I just don't know if it's
a human hand or an alien.

James Fox: Here's a
fairly serious guy.

He's a family man.
He's church going.

He feels, at least, he's
captured a genuine UFO on camera

Erin Ryder: Since the 2008
sightings were such big news,

Ben and I decided to kick it
old school and do some research

at the local library.

Yeah, you start pouring through
articles and I'll start looking

at the histories and we'll.

Ben McGee: See
what we can dig up?

Erin Ryder: Yeah, exactly.

Erin Ryder: And even though
there were widespread UFO

sightings around the
time of the incident,

not many people got close
to the unidentified object.

So James is going to meet
up with Ricky Sorrels,

who we met at the town hall, to
get more details on the craft

that he claims to have
been just 300 feet away from.

James Fox: So, tell me about
your sighting. What happened?

Ricky Sorrels: I took off
from my place to go hunting.

I was trying to get to this
fence line before the sun

went down.

Had about 45 minutes left.

I get tangled up in some briars.

As I'm trying to get untangled,
I look up and I'm like what

in the world is this?

I actually lift my rifle,
look at it through the scope.

James, I saw something so big
that you could probably land

an airplane on it.

I've never seen
anything like it.

Color's like a piece of tin
that's weathered or barn wood,

that color grey.

I'm a machinist and I've
welded my whole life.

But it's not like any
metal I'd seen before.

No seams. No bolts. No welds.

I'm watching it, and I actually
saw it take off from being flat,

300 foot above me, to nothing.

If I would have blinked,
I would have missed it.

James Fox: I've investigated a
lot of UFO cases and anyone

who has gotten close enough to
actually report what the actual

texture of the craft, to
me that is a really rare,

that is a really rare sighting.

Ricky Sorrels: If I would have
heard something like this and

I hadn't seen it myself,
I'd say yeah, you know,

they're full of doggy doo-doo.

But, since it happened to me,
it's something that is very real

to me. And I know what I saw.

James Fox: Why are
you coming forward?

Ricky Sorrels: I want
to find out what it is.

Erin Ryder: Death records.
Cemetery. Public library.

With James out following
up with Ricky Sorrels,

Ben and I were doing research
at the local library.

We're hoping to comb through
some newspaper articles to see

if we can dig up any new
information or leads to follow

up on.

Ben McGee: I've got something.
Erin Ryder: What'd you find?

Ben McGee: June 20th,
1891, check this out.

Quite a little excitement was
created last Saturday night

by the meteoric explosion
near Wasson-Miller Gin. Wow.

It was more than 300 feet
in the air before bursting.

It was utterly impossible to
obtain an accurate account of

the dimensions and general
appearance of this rare

phenomenon.

Preceding the explosion,
witnesses reported seeing

strange glowing white
lights in the sky.

That sounds like
the 2008 sighting!

Also discovering a number of
peculiar stones and pieces of

metal, all of a leaden color.

Erin Ryder: Wow.

Ben McGee: Very little time
was spent in scientific

investigations.

Erin Ryder: No one
studied what it was.

Ben McGee: No.

Erin Ryder: There could be
other debris still out there.

On the night of June 20th, 1891,
the residents of Stephenville

Texas reported strange
lights throughout the sky.

Then, hours later,
an object exploded,

emitting debris all
over the gristmill.

The locals say that the ground
was charred and that there was

this grey metal-like
debris everywhere.

James Fox: Did you actually read
the article or an interpretation

of the article?

Erin Ryder: No, it was the
actual article from 1891.

Ben McGee: 1891, yeah.
James Fox: Wow.

In 1891, there weren't any
manmade flying objects. Period.

Which leads me to believe that
whatever was seen and reported

could have been something
from another world.

Ben McGee: I'm interested
to get out there.

This is certainly the oldest
alleged crash site that

I've ever been tasked
with investigating so.

James Fox: Let me ask
you really quickly, Ben.

So, if something did crash
there as reported, do you think,

100 years later, there'll
be physical evidence?

Ben McGee: I mean these are very
specific sorts of things that

you can look for.

Granted it's been a long time
but leaden-appearance metal

fragments.

The article that we found
describes a fire in the area,

we can look for evidence of
old burns in soil horizons.

We can look for evidence of
topographic depressions in

the area that might indicate
an impact of some kind.

Erin Ryder: I think it's a
chance for us to get our hands

dirty and find some
physical evidence.

So we're heading out
to the old gristmill.

We already know we're going to
be fighting daylight and it's

probably going to be a little
dangerous poking around out

there in the dark, but we have
to do everything we can to

collect any evidence at all to
let us know what really happened

out here.

Ben McGee: Alright, this looks
like the topographic low point

here. You know, what
can we look for?

We can look to corroborate
different elements of the story.

We're looking for
metallic fragments.

We can look for any ash deposits
that might indicate an old,

historical fire in this area.

James, why don't we have
you start over by the mill?

Do a surface recon with
the metal detector.

James Fox: Alright.

Ben McGee: Start there.
Work your way towards us.

Erin Ryder: Alright.
Well, nights a wasting.

Let's get to it.

James Fox: According to the
newspaper article from 1891,

there was an explosion of some
unknown flying object and it

exploded into little bits of
metal and according to geologist

Ben, whatever it was, there'll
be evidence of it 100 years

later. So that is what
we're looking for.

Ben McGee: If you want to start
with the radiation survey,

I can start picking out prime
locations for soil sampling.

A radiation survey could detect
evidence if a nuclear reactor

had been nearby.

Erin Ryder: Sounds great.

Ben McGee: Right now I'm setting
up, our preliminary survey grid.

The total station is just
getting a sense for the area

right now.

And we'll use this to be able
to set up a reference grid so

we know where we're
going to be getting data.

Erin Ryder: Looks like
we're getting a reading.

Plant this flag for the truth.

Ben McGee: It's a
beautiful night tonight.

Completely clear sky.

Erin Ryder: It's pretty hard
to keep your eyes downward when

it's such a clear sky tonight.

If we're going to see anything,
tonight would be a really,

really great night.

Lots of regular
background radiation.

Not really much more than that.

You know this rain really put
a damper on this survey because

water does not conduct
well with radiation.

It pretty much blocks it so.
Ryder for Ben.

Ben McGee: Ryder,
this is Ben. Go ahead.

Erin Ryder: This supposed
crater or depression over here,

this thing is almost
ankle deep with water.

Ben McGee: Well, the best we can
hope for is a relative bump in

case there's a hot spot left
over but right now we're just

covering our bases.

Erin Ryder: Copy that.

I'll come over and help
you in a little bit.

Ben McGee: 10-4.

James Fox: This is a
really old mill site.

I'm getting just multiple
readings right here.

James Fox: Shhhhhhh.

I am not EXPLETIVE
going over there.

Dude, let's get the
EXPLETIVE out of here.

Are you kidding me right now?

Oh great, is this the same boar
that was following me last night

Dude, that was something big.

I'm not going anywhere near
that EXPLETIVE area. No way.

There's something in there.

Erin Ryder: I see plenty
of stars. Not much else.

I mean it is so strange what
the little shake of your hands

can do.

It really looks like I've got an
orb dancing around the screen

and I'm trying to hold
it perfectly still.

Erin Ryder: That's
really strange. Hey Ben.

Ben McGee: Yeah. What's that?

Erin Ryder: Come here.
What the hell is that? Oh.

Do you see that?

Ben McGee: Yeah. You know
what they look like to me?

Erin Ryder: What?

Ben McGee: They
almost look like.

Erin Ryder: What the
EXPLETIVE was that?

That looks like a
EXPLETIVE flying saucer.

Whatever that EXPLETIVE was.

I don't know what the
EXPLETIVE that was.

I might need to play
back this footage.

Like I'll do my due diligence.

I'll get as much
evidence as I can but.

Ben McGee: But you're sold.
Erin Ryder: No, I'm not sold.

I'm not sold. I'm not sold.
I'm not sold.

Ben McGee: No, I
reacted to it too.

It was like looking right
where you were shooting.

And it was this little
flare looking thing.

Erin Ryder: I want
to play this back.

I want to play this back.

I don't know what the hell
that just was. Ryder for James.

Get over here because I
just got the best footage.

James Fox: Over and out.
I'm on my way.

Erin Ryder: Hey.
James Fox: What's going on guys?

Erin Ryder: Alright, listen.

I was tracking something
blinking right?

All the sudden Hold on,
let me just cue it up.

James Fox: Let's check it out.

Erin Ryder: So, there's
this light I'm following.

Get ready for right in here.

James Fox: Holy EXPLETIVE!
Weird! Really weird!

Erin Ryder: Listen.
I'm a skeliever right?

Like...skeptic believer.
But EXPLETIVE it.

I just saw something
really strange.

James Fox: You got some
awesome video footage.

Erin Ryder: I was just excited
that Ben was excited about it.

Ben McGee: Hey, it
was weird looking.

Erin Ryder: That's my barometer,
if he's excited about it,

you know it's intriguing.

James Fox: I can't wait to
see that on a big screen.

Erin Ryder: I agree. I agree.

We continue to investigate
around the old mill for several

more hours, but to me, the
investigation was done when

I shot that video.

We headed home and
re-examined the evidence.

Focusing on two really
remarkable things.

We've talked to
multiple eyewitnesses,

we had that entire
town hall meeting,

and it really sounds
like they saw something.

Steve Allen: It had four
sets of lights on it.

Witness 5: And they moved beyond
speed that we comprehend.

James Fox: Clearly, something
truly inexplicable occurred over

the skies of Dublin.

After having met with Leeroy
Gaitan, Steve Allen,

Ricky Sorrels, I am absolutely
convinced that the 2008 sighting

over Texas was a bona fide UFO.

Erin Ryder: Ok Ben,
pull up my video here.

Ben McGee: So you were pushed
pretty far into zoom, right?

Erin Ryder: Not all the way.
I'm not all the way zoomed.

Ben McGee: Because I remember
like, there was a street right

here, there was street
lights right here.

Erin Ryder: The
street lights up here.

Ben McGee: Considering all the
evidence we've seen so far here

in Texas, I think there are more
conventional explanations for

the video.

I'm not convinced that there's
anything extra-terrestrial going

on here.

Erin Ryder: I was compelled
when I was out there.

I thought it was amazing
that I captured it.

Coming back here, I still am
struggling to figure out what

this is. That looks like
a EXPLETIVE flying saucer.

For the first time in my life, I
really really am tempted to say

that I believe UFOs exist.
