Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990–1996): Season 2, Episode 23 - Hate Canal - full transcript

Venice's population is relocating due to its pollution and smog affecting the land and structures - but also because of a large mutated group of rats whose bites sicken their victims. The Planeteers arrive and meet a pathologist, Resa, attempting to find a cure for the disease they cause that her young relative Pietre is suffering, and learn through clues that Verminous Skumm is behind it. But it isn't until Ma-Ti is bitten, and badly suffers, that they learn that Skumm is doing it through a substance placed in processed cheese that causes the rats and whoever they attack to become infected by contaminated canal-water. Now they have to find a cure for the worsening patients and stop the rats from terrorizing the populace with the contamination they thrive on.

Our world is in peril.

Gaia, the spirit of the Earth,

can no longer stand
the terrible destruction

plaguing our planet.

She sends five magic rings
to five special young people --

Kwame from Africa,
with the power of Earth.

[ Sirens wailing ]

From North America -- Wheeler,
with the power of fire.

**

From the Soviet Union -- Linka,
with the power of wind.

From Asia -- Gi,
with the power of water.

**

And from South America --
Ma-Ti, with the power of heart.

When the five powers combine,

they summon
Earth's greatest champion --

Captain Planet!

All: Go, Planet!

Captain Planet:
The power is yours!

Stay tuned, Planeteers.
I'll be right back.

Gi: And now...

Gaia: Planeteers,
to the crystal chamber.

We have another
eco-emergency.

This is Venice, Italy.

Wheeler: That's Venice?
It looks like a ghost town.

Where are the people?

Gone. The whole place
is empty.

Why, Gaia?

Pollution.

That's part of it, Gi,

but the garbage
in the streets and canals

is poisoning the city.

And those beautiful
Renaissance structures --

the smog is eating
away at them!

Yes, Linka,
but it's more than that.

All the filth has resulted
in a runaway number of rats,

and they're
spreading disease.

Wow. That's the ugliest rat
I've ever seen.

That's what
troubles me most.

Those rats
aren't normal.

I suspect foul play.

Or a rodent
at play.

Verminous Skumm!

That's my best guess.

Planeteers, we've got to
track down Skumm

and find out
what he's up to.

[ Snarls ]

Linka:
Venice is so beautiful.

Ma-Ti: From up here, yes,
but look at that water.

Everyone's leaving.

Kwame:
And many look sick.

Gaia is right.

Something
is very wrong here.

This is weird.

What?

Hmm. We should split up
and look for clues.

Good idea. Linka, let's you
and me tour the canals.

The rest of us will check out
the buildings.

[ Snarls ]

Wheeler,
this canal is...

I think the word you're
looking for is "yuck."

You know, if you do not look
so closely at the pollution,

Venice is...

Kind of romantic, huh?

Well, da. Maybe.

[ Snarls ]

[ Gasps ]

Bozhe moi, Wheeler.
Do not rock the boat.

[ Snarls ]

[ Squeals ]

[ Snarls ]

Nothing here.

Over there, Risa.

That's where
I saw the strange rats.

Good work,
Pietre.

To find a cure
for the plague,

first we must find a rat.

Do we have to?

They're scary, especially
the mean yellow ones.

[ Chuckles ] Come on.

[ Snarls ]

That's it,
my pestilent pets.

Get rid of them.

[ Snarls ]

It is so quiet.

Aah!

[ Both gasp ]

Aah!

Oo-Zhuss!

[ Snarling ]

Ah! Ah! Aah!

Oh, man. This calls
for some planet power.

Fire!

Va! Va!
Get away!

Wind!

Aah!

You will be safe there.

[ Snarling ]

Fire!

Thank you!
You saved our lives.

No problem,
uh...

Risa.
Risa Fellini.

You know,
you should not be here.

This area
is quarantined.

It is lucky
for you we were.

Why are you here?

I'm a pathologist.

I came to catch
a rat to study.

Their bites
are making people sick, and --

[ Moaning ]
Over here.

Oh, no!
Pietre!

One of the rats...
bit me.

Quickly! We must get him
to the hospital!

Uh, Mr. Skumm!

You ought to check out
the rat-cam, Mr. Skumm!

Not now. I'm mixing
my cheesy brew.

Can't forget
the secret ingredient

humans have so thoughtfully
provided --

polluted canal water --

and when I pour
my formula into it, presto!

Lethal limburger.

One bite of this
will turn an ordinary rat

into a mutant menace.

Mr. Skumm, sir,
I really think --

All right!
What is it?

Look at what
the rat-cam
picked up.

Oh, rats! Eco-idiots!

Trouble, Mr. Skumm?

You might say that,

but it's trouble
for them.

As long
as these rats

eat my polluted
provolone,

they'll
do my bidding,

and before you know it,
this city will belong to me.

And if humans continue
to pollute their cities,

I'll launch my formula
all across Europe!

Pretty soon,
the whole continent

will be one big
rat's nest -- mine.

Ha ha ha ha!

Wow!

I read
that the Doge's Palace

has not changed
in a thousand years.

Well, the way it's going,
it won't last another 10.

This pollution is eating away
the stone foundations.

[ Rumbling ]

Huh?
Huh?

Watch out!

Kwame! Water!

Phew!
Thanks, Gi.

When you said
Venice was falling apart,

I did not think
you meant so soon.

That stone did not fall
by itself. Look!

Those rats play rough.

Well, so can we.

[ Moans ]

Oh, Pietre.

Wheeler: I didn't realize
things were this bad.

And it's getting
worse.

Poor Pietre.

The doctors
will take care of him.

You do not
understand.

So far, we have not found a cure
for this polluted plague.

There must be
a cure.

Yes, but it is very difficult,
and we are running out of time.

Suppose we helped you
catch a rat.

No. Too dangerous.

Look what happened
to Pietre.

[ Snarls ]

If I got my hands on one,
I'd know how to handle it.

Ah!

[ Snarls ]

Wheeler, Linka!

It's Ma-Ti.

Meet us
at the Doge's Palace.

There is something
you have to see. Hurry!

What was that?

We'll explain
later. Come on.

Now we know Verminous Skumm
is behind this plague.

What nerve.

Look! There are rats
in here.

Poor things.
They are frightened.

I will calm them.
Heart.

We should move back so we
do not frighten them.

Excellent. A little surprise
for those meddling do-gooders,

my new fast-acting cheese.

Hey! What you doing, guys?

We found
some rats,

but Ma-Ti says
they are normal.

Normal? But look.

They do not
look normal to me.

Whoa!

Ma-Ti,
look out!

Aah! Aah!

Oh, no!
That rat bit him!

This is terrible!

It's taking effect faster
than I've ever seen before.

Let's get him
to the hospital, fast!

Oh! Aah!

Easier said
than done.

Ah!

Ma-Ti: Do not lose heart.
The Planeteers will return.

Linka: And now...

I-I feel strange.

Hang in there, buddy.

We've got to
do something -- fast!

The carpet.
Quickly.

[ Whispering ]

Come on, rats!

We'll fight you!

I hope this works,
or we're gonna be ratatouille.

Wind!

Wheeler:
Let's get out of here!

This way!

Hurry.

Look out!

Ah!

We can't
outrun them.

Then let
our powers
combine.

Come on, buddy.
We need your help.

Forget it.
He's zonked.

I've got an idea.
Water.

Quick.
Before they come back.

I know a shortcut
to the hospital!

Oh, no!

Time to detour.

If we can get to that
cellar door, we'll be safe!

Earth!

Hurry!

It's hard to see.

I'll shed some light
on the situation. Fire!

How's that?

Way to go, Wheeler.

Ooh, it's creepy
down here.

These passages
were built
centuries ago

to escape
invading
Barbarians.

Those stairs up ahead

lead into
the hospital
basement.

I'm afraid he's in
an advanced stage.

There's nothing you can do?

And if we don't
find a cure soon...

Hey, Risa, look at this.

Ma-Ti: [ Moans ]

H-Heart.

A-A-A plant.

What is it, Ma-Ti?

There is a plant
in the rain forest.

Risa, can you
save him?

I hope so.

So the Planet-pains
are in the hospital.

Maybe we should pay them
a surprise visit.

What do you say,
little brothers?

Then follow me.

Any luck, Risa?

Have you found a cure?

I hope so.
If my guess is right,

Ma-Ti does not have
a disease at all.

What?! What are you
talking about?

Remember this, Gi?
You found it in Ma-Ti's pocket.

That's what's making
the rats mutate.

One bite, and you're infected
with polluted canal water

altered by Skumm's
cheesy compound.

Which is why the rats
are acting so weird.

And why Ma-Ti is so sick.

The plant Ma-Ti told me about
has antitoxic properties.

I've chemically
reproduced it in the lab.

Will it work?

That's what we're
about to find out.

Quit bugging me,
you cheddarheads.

I don't have any cheese on me!

How do you
feel, Ma-Ti?

Better.

All right!
That is wonderful!

Thanks to you,
we have a cure.

My other patients
are recovering, too.

That's great, Doc!

Now we can go take care
of some unfinished business --

namely, Verminous Skumm
and his rats.

Doctor!

The hospital
basement,

it's overrun
with rats!

At least we don't have to go
too far.

Run, humans! Run!

Aah!

Wind!

Blast you, Planeteers!

I'll turn you
into shredded mozzarella!

Not on your best day,
rat-breath.

After him! Hunt him down!

Fire!

What the --

Hey, you're crazy!

Wheeler,
hang on!

Wind!

Whoa!

You'll pay for this,
Planet-pests!

Excellent!
Outstanding!

What is wrong
with them?

Heart.

They are frantic
for something, but what?

Follow them.

Maybe they will lead us
to the answer.

And Skumm's hideout.

Nothing can stop me now.

I'll show
those eco-punks.

When these torpedoes
release my formula
into the polluted canals,

it'll create
enough toxic cheese

to put every rat in Venice
under my power!

[ Chuckles ]
You're a genius, Mr. Skumm.

[ Chuckles ]
How very true.

Planeteers!

[ Laughs ]
But you're too late.

Launch the torpedoes!

Faster, Wheeler!
Paddle faster.

Hey, I've got the paddle
to the metal.

Maybe I can help.
Water!

Yee-haw!

Don't celebrate
too soon. Look!

Oh, no!
Oh, no!

Whoa!

Quickly!
Let our powers
combine.

Earth!

The water is too polluted
for our rings to work!

Looks like we have
a reception committee.

Yeah, and I don't think
they want to shake hands!

Look! There's something
that will shake things up!

Torpedoes!

They're going after
the cheese!

What about
those other
torpedoes?

We must clean
this canal water off

so that we can summon
Captain Planet.

Look. Clean water.

Water.

Huh?

Darn.

Ha ha ha! Water.

Oh, yeah.

All right.

Let our powers
combine.

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!

Heart!

By your powers combined,
I am Captain Planet!

Go, Planet!

Processed cheese --
not my favorite food.

Time for some
renovation.

Sorry, Skumm.

I'm on a cheese-free diet.

No, no, no!

Not that supercilious
superhero!

That's the worst thing
that could happen!

I was wrong. It's not the worst.
This is! Run!

Whoops! Can't leave
Skumm's cheese around.

Rats will be
on the rampage.

There's got to be
a sunken ship
down there somewhere.

Aha!

That ought to
hold it.

Now to restrain
Skumm's ambitions.

Mr. Skumm, we need
to make more cheese.

With what,
fleabag?

Get off of me,
you crazy Gouda-grabbers.

I'm out of here!

Look at the rats!

Skumm's cheese has made
them so crazy

they're swimming
out to sea.

Well, I think I've
spread myself

a little thin
on this one.

Got to go recharge.

Remember,
the power is yours!

But unless people
stop polluting
our canals,

Venice could
be doomed.

I hate to think what would have
happened without your help.

How can I thank you?

How about lunch?

You hungry, Pietre?
You want to do lunch?

Yes, just so long as it's not
grilled cheese.

[ Laughter ]

Go, Planet!

Venice is beautiful.

But pollution is destroying
this Renaissance heritage.

The climate here

has accelerated
the effects of pollution,

so other cities will face
the same problems.

The good news is that Venice is
using new restoration techniques

to clean up and preserve
their heritage.

Captain Planet: But the only
real way to solve the problem

is to stop pollution for good.

As always, the power is yours!

Wheeler: We'll be right back
with more Planeteer action.

Planeteers: We're back!
Go, Planet!

Go, Planet!

Captain Planet: Every year,
tons of toxic waste

are dumped into rivers,
lakes, and streams.

Much of it comes
from people's homes.

So to clean up Earth's water,
clean up your act.

Do not dump chlorine, bleach,
solvents,

and other toxic materials
down your drain.

And keep things like motor oil
and batteries out of your trash.

To find an appropriate site
to dump these toxic materials,

contact your local
sanitation department.

The power is yours!

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!
Heart!

All: Go, Planet!

By your powers combined,
I am Captain Planet!

* Captain Planet

* He's our hero

* Gonna take pollution
down to zero *

* He's our powers magnified

* And he's fighting
on the planet's side *

* Captain Planet

* He's our hero

* Gonna take pollution
down to zero *

* Gonna help him put asunder

* Bad guys who like
to loot and plunder *

You'll pay for this,
Captain Planet!

* We're the Planeteers,
you can be one, too *

* 'Cause saving our planet
is the thing to do *

* Looting and polluting
is not the way *

* Hear what Captain Planet
has to say *

The power is yours!
