Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990–1996): Season 2, Episode 22 - Scorched Earth - full transcript

Our world is in peril.

Gaia, the spirit of the Earth,

can no longer stand
the terrible destruction

plaguing our planet.

She sends five magic rings
to five special young people --

Kwame from Africa,
with the power of Earth.

[ Sirens wailing ]

From North America -- Wheeler,
with the power of fire.

**

From the Soviet Union -- Linka,
with the power of wind.

From Asia -- Gi,
with the power of water.

**

And from South America --
Ma-Ti, with the power of heart.

When the five powers combine,

they summon
Earth's greatest champion --

Captain Planet!

All: Go, Planet!

Captain Planet:
The power is yours!

Kwame:
You were right, Gi.

The sea life is amazing!

But even here, there is
an endangered species --

the dugongs.

I just hope we see one.

Well, here comes something.

Am I crazy,
or is that a mermaid?

I would not rule out
the first possibility,

but she does look
like a mermaid.

In the old days,

that's what sailors thought
when they saw a dugong.

Oh. Oh.

[ Gasps ]
What was that?

[ Sighs ] Someone started up
an oil rig.

Let's make
like dugongs

and find
a quieter place.

Looks like there is
no quieter place.

Unfortunately, soon there will
be even more drilling rigs here.

Crowd: [ Chanting ]
No more drilling!
Huh?

No more spilling!

You sure about that?

No more spilling!

No more drilling!
No more spilling!

No more drilling!

By what authority do you
interfere with our work, Betha?

By the right
of the people of Pasifah

to have unpolluted waters.

We have voted.

No more oil wells.

Very well.

You can explain this
to Supreme Commander Morgar.

Come on, men.

Yay! Yay!
Yay! Yay!

Impudent dogs!

I decreed that we
drill this well.

How dare they value a beach
over the wishes of their leader?

Ugh!

Are you all right,
Commander?

Baz, outsiders are subverting
the city of Pasifah!

See that they surrender
their leader to me in two hours,

or I will reduce that region
to a wasteland.

But, Commander Morgar,
we don't have the weapons.

General, even
the smallest country

can wage a war
on the environment.

[ Laughs evilly ]

Sir, I don't understand.

You don't have to.

I will show
these traitors

some real pollution.

Fly to oil platform 1
and await my orders.

Lady, you scored.

My name's Wheeler.

And I'm Gi.
Congratulations.

Thank you,

but we still have
many oil wells out there.

These platforms
are automated.

Why does he need me here?

General, turn off
the safety valves.

We're going to
spill this oil.

Sir, is punishing
a few rebels

worth ruining
Pasifah's coast
for decades?

They must be taught
a lesson!

I know that you come
from Pasifah, General,

but a soldier cannot afford
to be sentimental.

I have no feelings
for Pasifah.

Good.

Better to foul a beach

than let allow one city to foul
our entire nation with treason.

[ Bell rings ]

You're not
done yet, General Baz.

Stay there.

Oh, no!

Gi: They're deliberately
spilling oil into the bay!

What? Why?

I don't know,

but unless that dugong
gets to open sea,

she's a goner.

Ska-ray! Quickly!

Oh, she is not
going to make it!

Oh, yes, she is.

Water!

You did it, Gi!

Wheeler: Yeah! Whoo!

But how can we get rid
of all this oil?

Ah, it is impossible.

Not if we work together.

Let our powers combine!

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!

Heart!

By your powers combined,

I am Captain Planet!

Go, Planet!

Hmm. Somebody must think
he's pretty slick.

I'll just borrow
some steel.

Turn on
external camera.

Patch it
into Morgar's palace.

Well, that wraps up
the oil line leak.

Let's get this old clunker
into reverse.

Yay! Captain Planet!

Now, folks, any vacuum cleaner
can pick up dirt,

but can your machine
do this?

Sir, he is now
sucking up the oil

and pumping it
back into the seabed!

Baz, are you familiar
with the strategy
called "scorched earth"?

That means
destroying your own land

to hurt your enemy.

[ Chuckles ]

Precisely.

In this case, it means firing
a flare into the oil slick.

But, sir, the slick,
the wells -- they'll catch fire.

We might never be able
to put them out.

General, you're beginning
to sound dangerously

like a do-gooder
environmentalist.

Perhaps they've
gotten to you.

I am no traitor, Commander.

Whoa!

Oh!

Captain Planet!

Ah! Ah!
Ah! Ah!

Well done, General Baz.

Just the way I like
my seascapes --

very well done.
Ha ha ha!

Let this be a warning to any
who interfere in my affairs.

Whoa! I'm on fire!

But I got to cut out.
It's just too toxic.

Are you all right,
Captain Planet?

Don't worry, Ma-Ti.

I just have to recharge.

So, the power is yours!

I demand to know who
is the ringleader
of this protest.

We demand to know
how you could commit
this crime against the Earth!

You tell him, Gi!

Commander Morgar was right.

He warned me
outsiders were
undermining us.

The environmental movement
is entirely homegrown, Baz,

and I am its leader.

Betha, keep quiet
and leave Pasifah now.

Morgar will not stop
until someone turns you in.

I will not
abandon my work.

A rebellious fool,
just like your father!

I am surprised
he didn't arrest you.

I am his sister.

[ All coughing ]

Toxic smoke
from the oil.

Come with me
to my home.

Pasifah Forest,
the last grove of cedar

in this part
of the world.

My job as forestry expert
is to watch over it,

like my father before me.

I can't understand
how anyone who grew up

in such natural beauty
could do what your brother did.

In a way,
this park is the reason.

It happened

The forest was much bigger then,

but one day
the government ordered

that half of it be flooded
to build an unneeded dam.

When reasoning did not work,

Father did the only thing
he could.

He was ready to go
to prison for his beliefs.

But Baz was too young
to understand.

You'll risk your life
for a bunch of cedar trees,

but what about us?

We need you, too!

Ugh!

Baz did not understand
father was doing this for us

and our country.

I hate
Pasifah Forest,

and I hate you!

That was the last time
I saw my father or Baz.

They built
the dam anyway.

Years later,

I heard my brother
had joined the Army.

Now Morgar
has made him a general.

And turned him
against nature,

against everything his father
stood for. How sad.

[ Helicopter blades whirring ]

Attention,
citizens of Pasifah.

This is Morgar,
your supreme commander.

That sounds like someone
I've met before,

but who?

I hold
your very environment hostage.

Already the oil smoke
burns your eyes and your lungs.

And the clouds
cut off the sunlight,

turning your land cold.

Unless you surrender
the leader

of your environmental
movement,

I will make things worse --
much worse.

[ All shouting angrily ]

Down with Morgar!

Rebel dogs!

General, blow up
Pasifah Dam.

Sir, that will destroy the
forest! Lives could be lost!

Yours will surely be lost
if you disobey my orders.

Do it now,
or your replacement will.

Head for the dam.

Ready missile launch.

We must stop that water!

Earth!

All right!

Good job, Kwame.

Heart!

It's a trap!
Hide your rings, quick!

Come with us!

Bozhe moi!

Halt, or I'll shoot.

Run, Betha! Run!

Whew!

Let me go!

Morgar: Well, well,
Planeteers.

What intriguing
rings you wear.

They will be
useless to you, Morgar.

You do not understand
their power.

That's where you're wrong,
Kwame.

I know exactly
how to use them.

Zarm!

Zarm? What are you
doing here?

You might say I'm the brains
of this operation.

What about Morgar?

Ha! The supreme commander?

Ha ha ha!

Just a body,

or more precisely,
a nobody.

He wanted to be a dictator.

I helped him
take over the country

and -- who knows? --
maybe the world.

You see, I've been part
of every important tyrant
in human history.

With your five rings
as weapons,

Morgar has
a pretty good shot at it.

Five? There are
only four.

What?!

Where is your ring?

Where you'll
never find it.

Really? Perhaps I could
change your mind.

Look how they do
my bidding.

They follow me because deep
down, humans love destruction.

You're wrong!

Well, if I am, tell me
where that ring is.

Otherwise, you can watch
the demise of your friends.

Do not tell him, Gi!

How ironic. The first
to slip under the water

will be little Ma-Ti.

What do I do?!
I've got to save you!

Maybe I can slip free.

Zarm is right.

People do follow
tyrants.

History proves that.

That's not true, Gi.

No? Then how can
Zarm's soldiers

destroy
their own country?

People have not always
acted that way.

At the dawn of history,

people lived in balance
with nature,

using only
what they needed.

Then things changed.
New cultures arose.

Violent domination
of people and nature

became the rule,

and the spirit of Zarm
held sway over the Earth.

Ha ha ha!

What about people
like Baz?

Anyone can change.

Talking to yourself?

You will do better to give
Morgar what he wants.

Give in.
You cannot fight his power.

You give him power.

What you see is Morgar,

but he's just a shell
inhabited by Zarm,

the spirit of destruction.

He needs people to do
his dirty work,

and you're not like him,

or you wouldn't be upset
about my friends.

I'm going to trust you.

I'll tell you
where the ring is.

No, Gi! Do not trust him!

I hope you are right
about him, Gi.

You can either give it to Zarm
and help him destroy Earth

or let me use it
to save my friends.

It would mean my death
if I were caught.

You've risked death
for your country.

Is the world
less important?

Wait for me here.

What has happened
to these trees?

[ Coughing ]

Black rain, Baz,

and soon it will kill
all of us,

unless the oil fires
are put out.

Betha, I had no idea.

Snow? But we are
in the tropics.

The smoke cloud
is changing our weather, Baz.

I've been a fool.

No traitor
could harm our country

more than our leader has.

Oh, Baz.

[ Gasps ]

Commander Morgar wants
to see you, General, now,

and you, too.

Forgive me, Betha,

for coming to my senses
too late.

Hold your breath,
Ma-Ti.

I'll try.

Just a moment.

Keep moving!

Give me that!

Water!

Yeah!

Ooh.

Gi was right about you,
General.

Our father would be proud.

But we still need
our other rings.

I'll distract Morgar
while you get them.

You're taking
a big risk, General.

That is my job.

The fifth ring, General.

First I want
to know the truth.

Does this magnificent Zarm
really exist?

I exist.

And you would make a better
host for me than that
sniveling Morgar.

You could rule
the world.

What do you say?

We say
let our powers combine!

No!

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!

Heart!

By your powers combined,

I am Captain Planet!

Go, Planet!

Brr! I'm no fan
of global warming,

but this big chill
is ridiculous.

You traitor!

It's time I exposed your little
plot to the light of day, Zarm.

Blast that Captain Planet!

What's he gonna do?

First the weather goes crazy,
and now this?

Let me out of here!

A fire can't burn
without oxygen.

Let's see if this palace roof
is up to snuff.

Oil's well
that ends well.

The Army --
they deserted us!

What do we do?

You can go to jail
for your crimes

or you can seal yourself
in your fully stocked
bomb shelter

and live out the rest
of your miserable life.

Aren't you coming?

Sorry, Captain Morgar.
I don't go down with the ship.

Oh, no!
Morgar got away!

The air was getting
a little thick around here.

I'm gonna make a hard rock
out of this mess.

The weather can go
back to normal now.

Thanks to you,

we stopped Zarm's dreams of
conquest and destruction.

And reunited a family.

We'll meet again,
you peace-loving ninnies.

Boo!

Boo!

Resign? Over a few
toxic spills?

Let me guide you.

Together we'll run this nation
with an iron fist.

But what if there is
opposition?

I am not popular
in the countryside.

Huh?

Then I have
a little strategy.

I call it "scorched earth."

Ha ha!

Gaia!

Don't get
too comfortable, Zarm.

Wherever your destructive
ideas emerge,

the Planeteers
will be there to stop them.

Boo!

Go, Planet!

Today our world's economy

depends on
increasingly scarce resources,

such as oil
and other fossil fuel.

Wars may even be fought
over who controls them.

It is important that we develop
alternatives,

like clean solar power
and other new technologies.

But until these alternatives
are available,

we need to conserve
the resources we have.

And whenever possible,
ride your bike.

Or walk. It's healthy.

The power is yours!

Planeteers:
Go, Planet!

It isn't just grown-ups
who help destroy our planet.

Wheeler:
Some kids do it with graffiti.

Gi:
Some kids do it with vandalism.

Linka: And some do it
when they don't stop to think.

Gaia: Earth can be like this
or like this.

We can destroy it
with our hate...

Or save it with our love.

The power is yours.

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!
Heart!

All: Go, Planet!

By your powers combined,
I am Captain Planet!
