Big Sky (1997–1999): Season 1, Episode 38 - Edge of Reality - full transcript

(Dramatic music) (Aircraft whirring)

- War games must be so cool.

- Military exercises.

- Eh?

- Military exercises.

They're not war games.

- Oh.

So how do you guys know
when you've been hit?

What is it, like paint
balls, or dummy bullets?

What is it?

- Iwess.

- Sorry?

- Individual weapons effect
signature simulation.

- Of course.

- Yeah, one of our other pilots

flew a bunch of overseas
hot shots the other day.

They're pretty big game,
oop, sorry, exercises.

- Yeah, I once thought about
joining the army myself.

- (Laughs) You?

- What?

I like killing guys as
much as the next man.

- You're trying to be smart.

- Yeah, righto, Mancini, that's enough.

All right, change of plans.

You're now to fly us
to these coordinates

instead of the ones you were given.

- [Scotty] Well hang on,

we're just supposed to be
dropping you guys off.

- Yeah, that's what you'll be doing,

just to a different location

where you'll stay and wait for us.

- What about the uniforms

and equipment and stuff out the back?

- [Hooks] They can wait.

- I've got a rugby
test to go to tonight.

- You'll get there,

but as of now,

this aircraft is under army control.

Your orders are to fly
us to those coordinates.

(Dramatic music)

(Soft music)

(Aircraft whirring)

- [Lauren] This is ridiculous.

I've deposited checks from
this company a thousand times.

- [Male speaker] There's
nothing I can do.

If you'd like to come in
and talk to the manager.

- I don't have time to come in.

I need those funds.

- [Male speaker] Well
as I said, miss Allen,

you have to come in and...

- Look.

I've been banking with you for years.

My father Duncan Allen
used to bank with you.

- [Male speaker] Perhaps
you'd be happier

with the bank your father's using now.

- My father's dead.

What bank do they use in heaven?

- [Male speaker] I'm sorry,
miss Allen, I didn't know.

- Aw, forget it.

Look, I'll come in there
myself and sort it out.

Wait, stop!

Wait!

Dad?

- It's just a coincidence, that's all.

- A man the exact image of my father

and the car was rented by a Mr.
d. Allen, Duncan Allen.

- Dave, Dennis, dagwood.

- It's just too weird.

- Very strange, yes,
I'll give you that.

No offense, I mean, the guy's cremated.

Whoever's walking around renting limos,

it can't be him.

(Dramatic music) (Aircraft whirring)

- Look, we won't get
in the way, I promise.

We'll just watch from a distance.

- Absolutely not.

Civilians aren't allowed
near the exercises.

- What do you mean?

You've already involved us
by commandeering the plane.

- Negative!

You wait here with the
aircraft 'til we get back.

Is that clear?

- Affirmative.

- Anyway, we don't want
to be nurse mating you

when you break your leg.

- (Coughs) Wanker.

- Hey!

- Hey, cut it out, Mancini.

It's time to move out.

Let's go, come on.

- They're not so tough.

- Are you kidding me?

Mate, they're like the sas.

They're like commandos or something.

- What, they're not ordinary soldiers?

- No way.

They're like special trained killers.

- Whoa.

Hey, I gotta find out
what they're gonna do.

Let's follow 'em.

- No way.

- I bet we could follow 'em
without them even knowing.

- No.

Look, you heard what he said.

Besides, they'd notice us
straight away dressed like this.

- It's a bummer we don't have some.

- What?

What?

(Dramatic music)

- G.I. Jimbo.

Commando action center.

Rifle sold separately.

Sergeant Gibbs, move out.

- You know, they're gonna terminate us

with extreme prejudice, don't you?

- Would you stop worrying?

We'll stay back, okay?

They won't even know we're there.

Haven't you ever wanted
to play soldiers?

- Yeah.
- Well, there you go.

Those guys are so up themselves.

I just want to prove a point, mm-hmm?

- They'll find our bodies.

We probably would have been
tortured to death, jimbo.

(Dramatic music)

I've got a bad feeling about this.

(Dial tone)

- Go home, it's.

What's wrong?

- [Chris] I just had a phone call.

- [Lauren] And?

- From your father.

- Why didn't you come and get me?

- He said he couldn't talk for long.

- What did he say?

- He said he was sorry
that he lied to you

and that he'd explain later

and that we couldn't mention him

for the next 24 hours or so to anyone

because they would put
his life in danger.

- Are you sure it was him?

- Well, he was on a mobile phone.

It was breaking up a bit, but yeah,

I think it was Duncan's voice.

(Somber music)

(Dramatic music)

- There it is.

(Radio chatter)

I told you they wouldn't spot us.

- Great.

Now, can we just go please?

- No, I wonder what their mission is.

I wonder if they're gonna
blow this place up.

I love the smell of
napalm in the morning.

Smells like...

- Jimbo...
- Victory.

- Come on, I can't see them.
- There!

(Dramatic music)

(Radio chatter)

- You're dead, pal.

- [Guard] Jesus, where'd
you blokes come from?

- [Mancini] Sit down and shut up.

- [Guard] Hey, you're
not allowed to do that.

- [Mancini] I said shut up.

- [Guard] Destruction of
communication equipment.

That's not in the rules.

Usas...

- I said shut up!

Face the wall.

(Computer beeping)

- They're just in the corner
of that building now.

I can't see 'em.

- Great.

I really think we should
get going now please.

- We're fine.

- We're not fine.

- I'm gonna go around and see
if I can get a better look.

- Jimbo?
- Move out.

- Jimbo, jimbo!

- Do you got that virus uploaded yet?

- Yup, but not executed.

Still haven't found the pow camp.

- Ask him.

- I'm gonna ask you a
couple of questions

and you're gonna answer me yes or no.

Anything else, I don't want.

Understand?

- Yeah.

- Now, what do you know about
three special forces guys

that were captioned by blue
army yesterday afternoon?

- I don't have to answer that.

- Wrong answer, sweetie, try again.

- No, I don't know anything about
your guys being prisoners.

- Almost there.

- Could we please go back now?

- Just one more minute, okay?

(Alarm blaring)

- Oops.

- Damn.

- What happened?

- I don't know.

- It doesn't matter.

Execute the virus.

Let's get out of here.

- I haven't got the
prisoner camp bordered yet.

- [Hooks] It's too late.

- [Duffy] I need another 30 seconds.

- Now, let's go!

- How come he (Mumbles)?

- I don't know.

Move!

(Alarm blaring)

- This is bad.

This is very bad.

- I think we should get going
back towards the plane.

- Freeze!

- I know this probably
looks pretty suspicious,

doesn't it? - Shut up.

(Dramatic music)

- I hate to lose you,

but shouldn't you be getting ready?

What time's his dinner?

- 8:30.

You sure you can't make it too, hmm?

Tell the pnc to take a flying leap.

- Obviously, you haven't tried
disavowing Mrs. Wesley.

- Is that Chloe's teacher?

Hmm?

- Jack's.

She scares the hell out of me.

- Is Chris going?

- They're his kids too.

Tom, I'd love to be there with you.

You know that.

- Well, it's just whenever I imagine

myself asking someone to marry me,

I always that they'd know
the answer straight away.

- I love you, but it's
not that easy for me.

Not anymore.

Should have got me 12 years ago.

I just need some time, that's all.

- But if you're civilian pilots,

why are you wearing army uniforms?

- I told you we were
delivering supplies.

The uniforms were part of it.

- What, so you thought
you'd try a couple on

for a bit of fun?

Is that it?

- I have told you.

It must have been the guys
that we were following.

- Yeah, the phantom
soldiers of the red army?

- They commandeered our plane.

We dropped them a few
kilometers north of here.

- Then why were you caught
spying on our perimeter?

- Because we wanted to watch them!

- The computer virus that you uploaded

has scrambled our communications.

We can't call out as you well know.

- There must be someone with a phone.

- I already told you, okay,

we're cut off from the outside world

and I don't believe you!

- There are rules to this exercise.

- We can take you to our plane.

It's got all of our clothes
and identification.

We can prove we're telling the truth.

- Don't worry,

we're checking out your
plane tomorrow morning.

- Morning?

- Jimbo!

- Scotty, mate?

- The kids are asleep.

- I'm still not sure how you
get a submarine out of that.

- [Robbie] Easy.

Ocean, submarine.

- Looks more like a sandal.

- Jack's an artist.

Do you remember that
picture he did of us

that time after walking in on us?

- In bed?

- Mm.

- (Laughs) Didn't he take it
to school for show and tell?

- Oh, I was so embarrassed.

- I seem to recall I came
out of it pretty well.

(Doorbell ringing)

Expecting someone?

- No.

I'll get it.

You two haven't met, have you?

Tom broden, Chris manning.

- Hey.
- Gooday.

- How was the dinner?

- Oh you know, the usual.

Shop talk, shmoozing,
laughing at the boss's jokes.

How was the school meeting?

- It was good, it was good.

- Nice to meet you.

- Yeah, see you later.

I'm not saying you
should never see him!

I know you have a lot of things
you have to decide together.

- So what is the problem?

- Well, from what I can see,

the two of you are closer

than a lot of couples
who are still together.

- Oh god, am I supposed
to apologize for that?

It doesn't mean we still
want to be together.

Look, Chris has a life of his own.

- Is he with someone now?

- I don't know.

I don't keep score.

- Why not?

Too jealous?

- What?

- Maybe you're too blind to see
what's going on between you.

You're just gonna keep on not seeing it

until you end up back in
bed together, aren't you?

- The game would just
about be over by now.

I wonder who won.

- I wonder if those sas
guys know where we are.

- Know where we are?

They didn't even know
we were following them.

As far as they knew, we
were waiting at the plane.

- Yeah, but when they got there

and we weren't there,

maybe they called big sky.

- What, and told them what?

That the pilots they hired ran away?

Lauren and Chris would love that.

- Look, when we take these
guys to the plane tomorrow,

it will all be sorted out.

I mean, come on, you
only missed one game.

- The final game of a tied series

in the member's stand with Lucy.

- Lucy?

- Lucy.

(Dramatic music)

- Oh, I'm sorry.

We're closed for the day.

That front door's supposed to be shut.

- [Nicola] It wasn't, sorry.

- You were in the limousine.

- That's right.

My name is Nicola stanhope.

I've come from your father.

Lauren, he's alive.

I'm his wife.

- There was no widow in his will.

There was no mention of you at all.

- He offered to change his will

and I told him not to.

- I'll have a glass of wine.

- Yeah, thank you.
- Yes.

- We're together.

That's all I want.

- Look, let's just say
that I believe you.

Why would he fake his own death?

- He couldn't see any
way out of his debts

and some of the money he owed

was to people who don't
take to losing it kindly.

I mean, there was every chance

he was going to end up at
the bottom of the harp

tied to a washing machine,

so he decided to disappear.

- Okay.

What about the doctor
and the funeral home?

- They were part of it.

- Why didn't he tell me?

- Well, you're in new
York for one thing.

Plus, he knew that if you
believed he was dead,

so would everyone else.

- Of course, you know,

like once we find the plane,

we could fly you guys somewhere.

We could probably squeeze you all in.

We could stop and maybe
buy some mobile phones

and get some of that
anti-virus software, you know?

I know you could use it.

- If your story checks
out, you'll be released.

- Great,

because this has all just
been a big misunderstanding.

Hey, did I ever tell you

that I was gonna join
the army 'cause...

Oh boy.

(Dramatic music)

It was there.

- Why would we lie to you?

- [Male speaker] Shut up.

Get them out of here.

- [Scotty] We're telling
you, there was...

- We're telling the truth!

- [Duffy] Is it them?

- We better report this to the sarge.

(Dramatic music)

- What are you up to this time?

- I should get going.

- Okay.

- Okay.

I'll see you then.

Look, I'm sorry about last night.

I didn't mean what I said.

It's just, you know.

Anyway, I'm sorry.

I'll call you later.

(Keypad beeping)

- Chris?

Hi, it's me.

I thought I might catch you
before you went to work.

Nothing important.

I was just calling to say hi.

Maybe I'll try you at work.

Otherwise, maybe...

- Good morning.

- Go back a page and
check that other one.

- What's going on?

- It's an email that came overnight.

- That's the same thing
they said on the phone.

- Yeah, but it's not from my father.

- Dad?

- Yeah, I know, but it's not from him.

It uses all the right
words and phrases,

but he didn't write it.

- Did I miss a meeting?

- Yeah.

Last night, a woman came to see me

who told me she was his wife

and telling me to stay out
of the whole thing again.

- His wife?

- Yeah, someone's gone to an
enormous amount of trouble

to stop us from looking too
closely at this whole thing.

But it's not Duncan, he
wouldn't do this to me.

- Well, if it's not him,
where does that leave us?

- Well, the address of the
email, that's Lauren's dad's.

- It's from a company called
Friday island investments.

I've contacted my lawyer
and he's checking into it.

- I don't think that's
such a good idea.

I mean, it says here if we do anything,

his life will be in danger.

- He's dead, Chris.

I know he's dead.

- Okay.

You think it's a hoax?

(Phone ringing)

You better be right.

- [Lexie] Head of blue sky.

- Hi.

- [Chris] Gooday.

- Can I see you about something?

Robbie doesn't know I'm here.

I didn't want to have
to explain it to her.

I'm not even sure myself why I've come.

- Is she okay?

- She's fine.

Look, what do you want from her?

- Excuse me.

- Your marriage was over ages ago.

What are you still hanging around for?

- Is there any reason I should
be explaining myself to you

and not kicking your
backside out the door?

- We've got the address!

Oh, I'm sorry.

- I'll be there in a sec.

- You're confusing her,
blurring the lines.

She can't make choices about us

while the past is still hanging around.

It's not fair to her, pal!

- What were they doing to them?

- Oh nothing,

they're obviously looking
for the aircraft.

- If we can spring the pows,

their plane's our only
fast way out of here.

- We need those pilots.

- Idiots.

We're gonna have to go in and get 'em.

Come on.

- If you're part of one of those
special forces scenarios,

I need to know about it.

I'm getting sick of those cowboys

breaking the rules of this exercise.

What is it?

- [Male speaker] We should put
these guys with the pow camp

and put them in with the others.

- [Male speaker] Well, how
are we gonna get 'em?

(Dramatic music)

- (Mumbles) Anyway.
- Okay.

- What?

(Shushing)

What is it?

(Shushing)

- What are you looking at?

Hey? - Nothin'.

- Yeah, right, well look all you like.

You'll soon be joining 'em.

- I didn't like the sound of that.

Did you like the sound of that?

- [Scotty] Gotta get out of here.

(Men struggling)

- You going on a report
for no arm bands

on the next transport out of here.

You're gonna rot in the pow camp

for the rest of the exercise.

- Oh, well that was a great help.

What were you playing at?

(Beeping) (Door unlatching)

- Hi.
- Hi.

What's this?

It's your wedding ring.

Why?

- Well, I was thinking about

what we were talking
about the other night,

about me not accepting
the marriage is over.

And you were right.

I didn't want to let you go,

but now that you are Tom
are tying the knot.

- I haven't decided yet.

- Well, the point is

I wanted to give you some
kind of good luck gift.

Show there's no hard feelings.

Not that it means our
friendships over or anything.

- It's lovely, thank you,
but I can't take it.

- [Chris] Why not?

- Because it's yours.

I don't want you to just
erase our time together.

- Robbie, whatever happens,

we were once husband and wife.

That's never gonna change.

I'm not gonna forget it or
pretend it didn't happen.

I want you to be happy

even if you're making
a horrible mistake.

(Rock music) (People chattering)

- Well, that's 21, so it
must be back this way.

- So, Friday island is a shelf
company owned by your dad?

- A shell company.

It's different.

It's a hollow shell set
up as a tax (Mumbles).

- But they've still got offices?

- Yeah, well they have to make
it look like a real business.

Somehow, someone's managed to
hide it from dad's creditors

and keep the whole thing going.

- That's 265.

- Right, well.

What the hell?

- Ah, the offices of Friday
island incorporated.

(Drill whirring)

(Dramatic music)

- What, where are they?

Are you sure this is it?

- This is the one.

We saw them being pulled in here.

- How did those idiots get out of here?

- Couldn't make it as a soldier, huh?

Let's see.

So far, I've done
commando, great escape.

- The longest day.

- Yeah, it takes it outta you.

- Yeah, those sas guys
must have taken the plane.

- Why would they do that?

- Well, they've obviously
gone back there

and seen that we're missing,

so they've taken the plane to...

What?

- There's a little red light
on you like Terminator.

(Dramatic music)

(Beeping)

- Turn it off!

It stopped.

Come on!

(Beeping)

Get down, get down!

It must be activated
by you standing up.

The alarm means that you've been hit.

- I've been shot?

- Yeah, but don't worry about it.

Come on.

- I'm leaving this platoon.

I'm checking out of this man's army.

I can see the light.

There's a tunnel.

Oh, I'm coming big fella.

Oh, I'm coming.

I'm mortally wounded.

- I'll bloody mortally
wound you in a minute

if you don't hurry up.

Now, stop dicking around!

- You're not getting into the
spirit of this thing, Scotty.

- Come on and keep low.

- Serpentine!

Serpentine, serpentine.

(Computer beeping)

- Guys!

Guys, quick, I'm in.

Have you heard of imperial hotels?

- Yeah, they're a big Asian chain.

- Yeah, well Friday island is
emailing to the CEO in Tokyo.

This guy here see, sakato,

he's arriving in Sydney this afternoon.

- Hang on.

Go back a bit.

A north coast land deal?

- Yeah, like maybe another
big hole in the ground.

- Does it say where the
meetings being held?

- No.

Oh yeah, okay.

Hope you received
details of the meeting

this morning in the fax.

- [Chris] Fax.

- Get to that meeting,
we'd have the answers.

Does it say what flight
he's on and what airline?

- I could check the passenger list

of all the incoming flights from Tokyo.

- The airlines don't like to give

that information out there.

- Who said we're gonna
ask the airlines?

Oh come on, em, you're the
only one that can help me.

Well, of course I wouldn't.

You know me.

Yeah?

Yeah, his name's sakato.

Inbound from Tokyo this afternoon.

Ah em, you're a legend.

You're a legend.

She's checking.

We'll just meet this
sakato bloke when he lands

and tell him big sky's doing
the north coast flight.

- Do you think he'll buy it?

- Well, why not?

- Well, we have to...
- Yeah?

Yeah, I got it.

Yeah, I love you too.

Okay, see you next time.

Bye.

- Robbie,

I know you think us getting
married is complicated,

but it's not.

It's simple.

I love you.

I want to be with you for
the rest of our lives,

you and the kids.

I don't care about you and Chris.

I'm sorry I've been so stupid about it.

- It's all right.

- It's just I love you so much.

I know everyone has ex lovers,

but it's just that usually

you don't have to deal with
them on such a regular basis.

I need to know your answer.

I need to know that you
feel the same way that I do

'cause if you don't,

if you don't want to marry me,

then I can't see much a
point in us being together.

- We must have lost 'em by now.

- Right there.

Let me see if I can spot 'em.

(Dramatic music) (Men struggling)

(Aircraft whirring)

- Lauren Allen.

Your father spoke of you many times.

- You met him then?

- In person, no.

Some years ago,

we had the opportunity
to do business together,

but it was all done by phone and fax.

- Well then, why did
they need a lookalike?

- You've never seen my father?

- I know what he looks like.

I've seen his photograph in
the company prospectors.

I wouldn't have been interested

in Mr. phelp's development
proposition at all

if your father was not involved.

I look forward to finally
meeting him in the flesh.

- My father's dead.

I think Mr. Phelps is
trying to swindle you.

- Trespassing on official
military maneuvers,

interfering with our mission,

wasting our bloody
time looking for yous.

What the hell were you playing at?

- Scotty said he wanted to try

and prove himself as a soldier.

He said he'd deny it.

- Look, we just wanted to sneak a look.

- Just stay there.

Don't bloody move.

All right, what have we got?

- Not bloody much thanks to them.

- We still got our aircraft.

That's our ace.

- Two pilots and an aircraft.

It ain't much.

- Why don't we get them to take us up?

We can search from up there.

- I've already thought of that.

We still don't know where to look.

- Well, we gotta bust 'em out somehow.

I mean, how's it gonna look,

the three of us captured by
a pair of blue army grunts.

- You guys.

- Hey, we told you to shut up.

- If you were looking
for a prison camp...

- Didn't you hear what he just said?

- Hey, Duffy.

What did you say?

- If you're looking for a prison camp,

I think I know where it is.

They were gonna send us there.

Jimbo, do you remember when they said

that we'll be joining the others soon?

- No.

- He does.

I saw a map, okay?

It showed where the prison camp is.

It's on one side of this area

that's shaped like a bull's head.

- So?

- Well, you take us to the plane,

I'll show you where it is.

- When he comes in, hit
him with the logo first.

A nice, clear image.

Lauren?

Lauren, I can explain.

(Aircraft whirring)

- Yeah, you see this area here

that's shaped like a bull's
head and the valley?

Okay, now the pow
camp's down about here.

- Makes sense, (Mumbles).

- It's only a few clicks

from the blue forward defense position.

- Let's get in there.

- [Jimbo] I'm off 10 minutes.

- Okay, gear up.

Now when I radio, you guys
get the engine fired up.

Be ready to take off asap, okay?

- [Jimbo] Got it.

- When we land,

under no circumstances are
you to leave the aircraft.

Am I clear?

- Crystal.

- Yeah.

(People chattering) (Radio chatter)

- Excuse me, can I speak
with her for a minute?

- Sure, go ahead.

(Phone ringing)

So you had nothing to
do with my father?

- I was living with him near the end.

- Why should I believe you?

- You don't have to.

It won't change anything now.

Lauren, we were together
for three years.

I was in love with your father.

We were planning to come to
New York to surprise you,

but well, it was too late.

- Why didn't you ever call me or?

- I didn't see much point.

Besides, I didn't want to intrude.

I knew what you were feeling.

I'm the only one who did.

- All the juggling and the plotting,

was it all worth it?

- 30 million dollars.

You tell me.

- [Officer] Excuse me, miss stanhope.

- Well, goodbye Lauren.

What happens now?

- [Officer] You'll be
taken down to the station

where you'll be charged

and you're entitled to one phone call.

(Dramatic music)

- I don't like these crosswinds.

- We'll hang on, what are you doing?

- Hey, you're gonna land down there?

What about those trees?

- Well, let's ignore them.

They might go away.

- [Mancini] You're crazy!

- You guys said you wanted
to land close to the camp.

This is as close as you'll get.

- Yeah, I meant on a bloody airstrip.

Pull it up!

- Hey, you worry about
getting your guys out.

Let us fly the plane.

- [Scotty] Better
buckle up tight, boys.

(Dramatic music)

- Who are you?

- The name is John Desmond.

I'm an actor.

I'm sorry, I never
meant to hurt anyone.

At my age, it's not easy
making a living out of acting.

I was gonna retire on
what Neil was offering.

- You know, up close, you
really look nothing like him.

- [Hooks] Can you guys move it?

(Dramatic music) (Men yelling)

(People chattering) (Rock music)

- Buy you a drink?

It's okay, I haven't come
in to cause any trouble.

- Yeah, I'll have a beer.

- Two beers, thanks.

I was out of line this morning.

- Oh well, don't sweat it.

I probably would have done the
same thing in your shoes.

In fact, I have.

- Cheers.
- Cheers.

So does this mean Robbie's
given you an answer?

- No, well yeah.

She called me at work and
asked me to come over

but I wanted to come here and
straighten this out first.

- I haven't seen her this
happy in a long time.

- I just don't want it to be awkward

if you come over and see us.

I'd really like it if you
and me could get along.

- No worries.

Just look after her.

- So, what do you reckon?

You think we'd make it
in the special forces?

- You were killed.

- I mean before that?

- [Duffy] And then you were captured.

- Well, apart from that.

- Look, I'll say one
thing for you fellas.

You can fly that bloody plane.

See yous layer.

- See you.
- See you.

- They were impressed.

- You owe me for two
tickets to the test.

- Yeah, all right.

- Oh and what about Lucy?

What about my love life?

- Well, I'd really like to help.

You know, I love you
like a brother, man.

- Surprise.

- (Shushing) Kids are asleep.

Do you know what time it is?

- Yeah, I know what time it is.

I came here to drink a
toast to you and Tom.

Where is he?

- [Robbie] He's gone.

- Gone?

What happened?

You two have a fight?

- I tried to call you today.

- Yeah, sorry, I was away.

Sorry.

- I wanted to talk to you

about what you said the other day

about still having feelings for me.

- Yeah, I know.

I said I was sorry about that.

When you say he's gone...

- I mean he's gone.

I turned him down, Chris.
