All the Same... or Not (2022–…): Season 1, Episode 4 - Episode #1.4 - full transcript

[Beta] On the last episode of Tudo Igual…

You're engaged?

Hey, listen, Carol, your mom's trying
to be happy. You wanna mess that up?

No, listen, I'm really not
getting in the way of anything.

-Uh, Priscila, right?
-Yeah. But you can call me Pri.

By the way, this is Pri.
She just joined our grade.

-Hey, there. What's up?
-How are you?

I lied to Carol.
I told her I was with my parents.

And she doesn't know that I'm with you.

We were worried sick about you.
You can't just vanish, okay?

Are you serious?
You've never cared about me.

Now you're gonna play the worried father?

She's with Bernardo.

-Bernardo? Where are they?
-Mm-hmm.

[Amanda] We only know
what Carol told us. Nothing.

-Tomás!
-Hey!

Finally. Come with me.

Mom, I can't talk right now.

There's something weird going on
with Beta.

I have to go over to Alex's store
right now.

-What are you recording?
-[Trix] You!

Isn't that why I'm here?
To record everything?

Yeah, you're right, but I'm not doing
anything interesting right now.

[Trix] Hmm. Are you sure?

You organized this event right here
pretty much single-handedly.

-You're the Brazilian Greta Thunberg.
-[laughs]

Come on! And you guys totally helped out.

Hmm. You say that
like it's not absolutely incredible.

-You know what's more incredible?
-Hmm?

That one cute activist guy
just confirmed he's coming.

-[chuckles]
-Is that all you worry about?

No. I worry about all kinds of things.
Um, like… animals.

And a boy like that
is totally an endangered species.

-How's it going, ladies?
-Good. Everything's great, Beth.

Hey, thanks again for hosting
this event here at the last second.

Come on. No worries. I'm happy to.

The other girls have known me long enough
to know I love a party, right?

And this way I can do my part to help out.

-[chuckles]
-Where's Beta? She here?

-Oh, yeah. I don't know if she's coming.
-[Beth] Oh, really?

She'll probably just ask Alex
to bring the posters by.

-I'll help you in just a minute.
-Yeah.

-Are they still not talking?
-[Trix] Yeah.

I never thought they'd fight like this.
It's all upside down, Beth.

This week's been a disaster.

Where's Carol by the way?
Is she not coming?

She'll be here soon.
You girls know your friend, right?

Carol only knows how to solve her problems
one way. [chuckles]

[performer singing rock song in English]

ALL THE SAME…

[song continues]

Carol, what are you doing here?

-I didn't know you knew this place, Tomás.
-[scoffs] You don't know me at all.

Um, we were just, uh…

I can explain.

Oh, so you've got some excuse for that?

Of course not.

Beta invited me to hear a band
in the studio. It's no big deal.

Is that true, Beta?

Yeah. And yesterday we skated downtown.

And we had a good time with each other.

Beta's a great friend. Know what I mean?

Oh, yeah. I know that.

Really.

I was going to tell you. It's just that--

That whole story about being
with your parents, all that was a lie?

-[scoffs] Wha--
-Because I knew

you were gonna react like this.

-And he--
-Was it worth it?

To just throw away our friendship for him?

Nice.

I'm done with you!

-[footsteps depart]
-Ah, relax. She, uh…

She's been like this lately.

[rock song reprises]

Watch where you're going!

OR NOT

My bad!

Stop following me!

I don't know if you remember,
but we live in the same house.

How could I forget?

Don't be mad at Beta.

I'm not having this argument with you.

It's not my fault
that I'm way better company than you.

Please don't talk to me!

-Go a different way.
-I don't know another way home.

-I could go missing.
-Great.

[line ringing]

[busy signal beeping]

[phone beeps]

Carol, I'm sorry. I just made a mistake.

I know you're really angry,
but I was gonna tell you.

It's just--
I didn't mean for it to happen this way.

And suddenly, it was dark out,
and I was there with him.

But really, he's not as bad as you think.

I'm sorry. I know you don't want
to hear this, but please just answer.

-We need to talk.
-[electronic chime]

Wow, your friend is gonna love
this podcast you're sending her.

-Cut it out, Alex.
-So what happened?

Carol saw me with Tomás and freaked out.

Wait, but that's obvious.

Didn't you say Carol detests Tomás?

Yeah, but she wouldn't even hear me out.

Beta, Beta, hold on.

It's clear this would upset her.
You should have known that.

-Because I'm always in the wrong, huh?
-No, no, no. That's not what I'm saying.

I think maybe you should try to see
her side of this.

[sighs]
These things are complicated. It's normal.

I don't need your advice.

[performer singing rock ballad in English]

[chatter on TV]

I always tell Carol
this character is so spoiled.

She's just so entitled and loves a drama.

Man. Drives me crazy.

Don't you think you were
a little too harsh on her?

Hmm?

It's a tantrum.

Yeah, I might have been hard on her,

but I'm not as patient
as you are with Tomás.

I'm not patient. I'm not patient at all.

It's just our relationship
is completely different.

-Ah.
-You can't compare the two.

And I just can't pressure him
right now, you know?

Sure.

What's up?

[Beth sighs]

[breathing heavily]

Create Group
BETA LIED!

[knocks on door]

Hey, why'd you slam the door?

Carol, didn't I tell you
to come straight home?

What's going on with you?

What's with this whole rebellious phase
all of a sudden?

Listen up, I don't see any other option
here but to ground you.

I'm trying to be your friend, Carol,
but you're way out of line.

Fine then. I should probably stay inside
for a while.

Talk to me, baby, please.

Hey. What's going on, honey?

Do you know where Beta spent
the whole weekend?

With your boyfriend's stupid son!

And then she lied to me.

She said she was with her parents,
but no, she was with him.

My life's been awful
since this kid got here.

Why does he always
have to ruin things for me?

Honey. Come here. It's not like that.

Things will all be all right.

It's okay. This will pass.

Just breathe.

-Beta, there you are!
-No, I'm invisible.

Very clever.
I thought you were over at Alex's.

Yeah, and now I'm here. That's something.

Hi, honey.

How are your friends doing?

Don't know.

Don't know? What's that about?
What's going on, Beta?

That's odd.

So you both know Carol's so-called brother
from São Paulo?

Beth's boyfriend's son?

[Martha] Mm-hmm.

Yeah, so I kind of hung out

-with him this weekend.
-[beeps]

But she freaked out, out of nowhere.

That can't be true.

I know!
It was completely out of left field.

Hold on. They're already trading shares
of Flávio and Juliana's start-up?

I already told you that, Fabrício.

-Didn't I?
-Right. You told me,

-but you said it was next month, right?
-Didn't I, Fabrício?

Martha! Well, in any case,
I think it's worth investing in.

-It's a very interesting business.
-Yeah, now is the time.

What happened, Beta?
What'd your friend say?

Doesn't matter.

I'm tired. Going to bed.

Do you want me to ask Marlene
to fix you something, sweetheart?

[Beta] No.

-Teen girls.
-Mm-hmm.

[performer singing pop song in Portuguese]

[exhales sharply] Hey.

You feeling calmer?

Girl, why'd you start a thread
without Beta?

That's really awful.
It's like virtual exile.

Listen, guys,
Beta's the one who made this serious.

She lied to us.
And she spent the weekend with Tomás.

We know that already.
But have you two talked since then?

Of course we haven't. And I don't want to.

Carol, she must have
some good explanation.

You guys can't keep fighting forever.

I don't wanna hear any of her excuses.

And you don't have to ignore her.

You can do whatever you want.

How about Tomás? What's he think?

He's such a jerk. He's just using--

He's just using her to get to me.

[music playing from headphones]

But if you think he's using her,
wouldn't you wanna help Beta out?

-Maybe, but--
-[Carlos trumpets]

Good morning, good morning,
good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

How are all those wonderful chemical
reactions going on in your bodies?

I hope you're excited,

because what we're covering
today is really cool.

Let's look at modeling atoms, yo!

Carol.

Hey.

I need to talk to you.

I was gonna tell you.

-It was nothing. Nothing happened.
-Mmm.

So do you want to stop talking?

I already said sorry.
What else do you want from me?

-[Carol scoffs]
-What's going on here?

Mm-hmm.

Carol.

-See what you did?
-I didn't tell her to go.

I think we should stop talking.

-'Cause of Carol?
-Yeah, 'cause of her.

I think it's stupid,
but if that's what you want.

This sucks. I knew this would happen.

[exhales sharply]

So we can't talk to each other,
but can I at least message you?

-[Trix] That's it.
-[Amanda] Looks good. Paint's ready.

[Trix] We could use more markers.
People are gonna need those.

-And if we run out…
-Yeah. All right. I'll go get more.

Am I late, guys?

No. People should start arriving soon.

Okay, cool. I-- I had to go for a run
to clear my head.

Uh, Beta isn't here yet.

Okay. Who said I'm looking for Beta?

Mm-hmm. Okay. Do you think I'm clueless?

It's been a week, Carol. Can you make up?

Trix, I don't want to argue with you.

Let's focus on Pri's event.

Yeah. Because I'm actually starting
to get nervous.

Midria's been totally MIA this whole time.
She didn't answer any of my messages.

I'm literally starting to lose my mind--

No. Relax. She'll walk through that door
any moment.

-Uh, Beta's here.
-I'm, uh… gonna go help my mom.

Thanks for bringing this stuff.

Mmm. I'm really glad you came.

Same here. Or I was.

Come on.
Quit it with the bad vibes over here.

Everyone just cheer up. Come on.

I think you guys
need to work this out, okay?

I already apologized. What else can I do?

I thought this would last
a day or two, maximum.

She's ignored me all week.

Mmm. But you did
stop talking to Tomás, right?

Yeah and no.

Hmm.

I don't answer him,
but he keeps messaging me.

"Coming back from São Paulo,
but don't know if can make the event."

"Oh, the show was great.
What's up with you?"

You're witnesses
that I didn't reply to any of them.

Beta.

Okay, girl.
You really got a lot of restraint.

Half a heart emoji, and I'd have been
on my way to São Paulo to meet this boy.

-Amanda!
-Hey, it's true, girl.

Beta, I'm so glad you're here.

So, you hashed things out with Carol?

-[sighs]
-[Beth] Hmm.

[clicks tongue]
You'll be friends again, okay?

I have something to tell you
that might cheer you up.

I had menus printed with your design,
and they turned out beautifully.

-Come see. [chuckles]
-[gasps]

Trix, this eyeliner is gorgeous. So good.

Looks great on you.

Thanks. [chuckles]

Uh, the poet? Still nothing?

No. Nothing.

I'll only be able to relax
when she starts answering my calls

or replying to any of my messages.

It's gonna go great.

Thanks.

And Bruno? He's not coming with you?

Uh, I don't know. We got into an argument.

Don't worry though. Focus on your event.

By the way, try the poet again.

You got it.

What?

Nothing, dude. Nothing at all.

-[busy signal]
-Okay. [scoffs]

To be human, you have to take your place
in the community.

Have you let yourself grieve
over this quarantine?

Have you felt our collective pain?

Have you felt the weight
of all of this on your shoulders?

Your delicate, sensitive shoulders
can't hold the whole world, my friends.

It's all right. It's all right to feel
the way you do. The pull of…

What are you watching?

Oh, it's a slam poet
who's coming to Pri's event on Saturday.

She asked me to record
and edit the video.

-And then she'll use it to send--
-Saturday?

-This Saturday?
-Yeah. You coming?

[sighs] Come on, Trix.
We have lunch on Saturday.

My grandparents are coming. Remember?

Oh, no. That's right. I totally forgot.

Well, I said I'd be there. It's important.

This lunch is important too.
I thought you knew.

Oh, Bruno. We can have lunch
with your grandparents whenever.

No. So this event is your priority?

This last minute thing?

I guess I'm not really
your priority anymore.

Yeah, 'cause if it's not your essay,
it's Pri's event or Carol--

Oh, Bruno, don't say that.

Hey. Speaking of which.

-Do you need anything else?
-I gotta go.

Bruno.

[Carol] Hey, girl.

Everything okay?

Boyfriend issues, Carol.
You know how it is.

[scoffs] How would I know that?
Where's my boyfriend?

I couldn't even kiss the guy,
let alone date him.

Oh, right. Bernardo. That's crazy.

I just keep replaying that day in my head.

Trying to understand,
you know what I mean?

It was just so incredible.

We were practically finishing
each other's sentences, you know?

Then his girlfriend shows up.

Hey, we don't know
if she's his girlfriend.

She's gorgeous.
They were both being super intimate.

They walked away hugging.
No way she's not his girlfriend.

Whatever.

Uh, well, I think
you shouldn't be so quick to judge.

You know,
Bruno did say that he was single.

Then he fooled the three of us, didn't he?

The girl and me and Bruno.

When did my life turn into a soap opera?

Oh, come on. Are you sure
you don't want to come over?

You know I'd love to, but I'm grounded.

I'm a prisoner here. [groans]

[pop music playing]

Oh, guys, I'm so stoked for this.

It's gonna be incredible.
This poet, Midria, she's so good!

That boy's not bad either, Pri.

Tell me more.
What do I do to impress a guy like him?

I need data, information, statistics.

[laughs]

-Amanda, you're out of your mind, huh?
-[phone chimes]

Don't bother, girl. It's my phone.

Ah!

You guys, he just requested
to follow me back, you see?

I'm getting excited
about saving the planet.

-Sorry, I gotta take this.
-[chuckles]

Trix, you okay?

Mmm, not a big deal.

It's just that I had plans to meet Bruno
after studying with you guys,

and he hasn't sent me a message.

Um. Maybe something happened to him.

-You message him instead.
-Yeah.

what are you doing?

are we meeting up today?

[Bruno] Hey, how are you?

Uh, Bernardo stopped by my house
and invited me to play footvolley and…

Sorry to tell you at the last minute.

Uh, we'll do it
some other time, okay? Kisses.

Ridiculous. He's getting back at me
for missing lunch with his grandparents.

No, he really doesn't get it.

-Trix, don't worry. You two will talk--
-Wait, wait.

Let's settle this now. Where did he go?

Oh. No, Amanda. No.
No way I'm getting involved.

It's not about that, Trix.
It's about showing you care about him.

I mean, he's your boyfriend.

Mmm. And you want to find guys
at the beach, right?

Got me. [laughs]

-Come on.
-Coming?

No, I can't. I have to meet up with Midria
to talk about the event, you know.

But have a fun time.

Okay. [chuckles]

Well, ladies, see you. Bye.

-Bye, Amanda. [blows kiss]
-See ya.

-Later, Trix.
-Bye.

[performer singing
upbeat song in Portuguese]

[grunts]

He's not even looking at me.
H-He hasn't noticed me.

Hold up! Hey, guys. Sorry.

My friend here really needs to talk
to her boyfriend.

One sec.

In the meantime,
you want to teach me how to play?

What are you doing here?
You didn't believe me?

It's nothing like that, Bruno.

Uh, you…

[groans] I don't know how to do this.

You're better at romance than me.

You didn't have to stop studying
to come here and tell me yourself.

You don't understand. When-- When I--

Trix, it's all okay.

We're a couple, not the same person.

You're right.
I do think we need more space, maybe.

I never said that, Bruno.

I love you,

and I'll always make sure
you're my priority.

But that's smothering you.

I don't want that to happen.

Let's try it this way.

I have lunch with my family, you go
to your event, and yeah, we're good.

I gotta--
I should get back to my game. Cool?

[pop music playing]

I'm back. I'm back. I'm back.

Thank you, guys. Thank you.

Hey. How'd it go?

[Trix] Okay.

[laughs]

-Hi, Pri, how are you?
-Hey. I'm doing great. Take this.

-Hey, enjoy, okay?
-Yeah, I will.

[Pri] Hey!

-How are you?
-Here. One for each.

-[guest 1] This looks awesome.
-[guest 2] It does.

-I'm impressed.
-[Pri] It's cool.

Thanks, thanks. Have a blast.

-Of course.
-I will.

Come on.

Ugh, it's getting crowded.

Told you it was gonna be a hit.

-You did. But if Midria doesn't get here…
-Calm down. You have time.

Yeah. How's Bruno?

Oh, he-- he texted me,
but I don't think he's gonna make it.

Oh, Trix. We can't do everything, right?

Sometimes we have to make
hard choices in life.

Just don't beat yourself up too much.
I'm sure he'll understand.

-I needed to hear that. Thanks.
-[chuckles]

-[Pri] Hi!
-Hey.

Sorry for disappearing.
My phone broke. I swear.

Don't worry. Don't worry.

-Come here. Let me show you the setup.
-Okay. Hi.

[sighs]

-Hey, Trix?
-Hmm?

It's activist boy.

-You know your lines?
-Not at all. But let's go.

[Trix] Oh! [laughs]

Hi, everyone. Listen up.

Um…

I'd like to thank you all
for being here on this special day.

But this isn't my event, okay?

I want to introduce
today's real host, Pri!

[people cheering, clapping]

-[Amanda gasps]
-[activist grunts]

This is turning out better than I'd hoped.

What's that?

Relax. I wanted something biodegradable.

[activist chuckles]

And after that scene that was
right out of a Lifetime movie,

I'd like to thank you all so much
for coming out today.

Uh, a reminder

that this is an event to raise awareness
about our use of plastic.

We need to stop disposing of
and consuming plastic

the way we have been
since it was invented.

If that doesn't happen,

by 2050 there will be more plastic
than fish in our oceans.

And I think we can all see firsthand

that it's really not so hard
to replace plastic.

So we can all start by doing our part
as individuals.

I hope this is an opportunity to learn,

uh, some strategies to replace plastic
in our lives.

And maybe we'll see
that this is easier than we think.

I hope you all enjoy the event
and share what you learn.

-Thank you.
-[cheering, clapping]

[person] That was really good!

[performer singing pop song in Portuguese]

-Her. Pri. Yeah.
-Right over there?

[song continues]

Carol.

Hey. We really need to talk.

Listen, Carol. Just give me a chance.

Enough. Stop ignoring me.

-I made a mistake, but I--
-[door opens]

[sighs] I just don't get
why you lied to me, you know?

And why you care so much about that jerk.

Give him a chance, Carol.
He might have a lot in common with us.

[scoffs]

-[sighs]
-Yeah. I'm done.

I'll stay away from him, okay?

It's just that he came to the store,
and the rest of it just happened.

Beta, you should've talked to me.

Yeah…

I was so afraid of what you might say.

I messed up.
I promise it won't happen again.

But you're totally right.

I'm kind of confused
about this situation with my parents.

-I'm-- I'm freaking out--
-With your parents?

You haven't worked that out?

I know they sort of like me.

But they only think about themselves.
It's like they forget I'm even there.

Know what I mean?

It's nothing new.
We've talked about it before.

It's just that…

now everything feels bizarre.

Sorry, Beta.

-[gym boy] Me too. It is over, right?
-Yeah.

-Ah, okay, then.
-That's cool.

-Bye.
-[gym boy] See ya.

Later. Bye.

[snorts, giggles]

Are they gone?

God, guys, this is such a mess!

What was I supposed to do?
I was not prepared.

But don't worry, guys.
I'm gonna get out of this.

You wanna laugh some more?

You know that mysterious girl
who was with Bernardo?

-[all] Mm-hmm.
-Turns out she's his sister.

Uh, wait. What do you mean his sister?

Bruno, did you know this?

I said he didn't have a girlfriend.

I would have mentioned his sister
if you asked.

[Amanda] Oh, Bruno, come on.

I can't believe it.
I bet I'm gonna lose him 'cause of this.

I should have said sorry,

or I don't know, maybe bought a ticket
to Siberia and never come back.

-Drama.
-It's a shame.

Well, guys, thanks a lot. I'm heading out.

Uh, are you staying here?

Uh, I have to clean up a little.
I'll see you tomorrow.

You want some help?

-That's okay, Amanda.
-[Amanda] Okay. Call if you need me.

-I'm gonna go too. [kisses] Love ya.
-See ya.

-[Amanda] See ya.
-[Trix] Call me.

-[Carol] Sounds good. Bye.
-[Bruno] Later. Bye.

[sighs]

[sighs]

I'm so embarrassed, I thought that girl
was your girlfriend

[door opens]

Sorry, I thought you were duping me

We're closed. Thank you.

[door closes]

Do you mind if I sit down?

-So listen, I--
-Hang on.

I'm not a crazy stalker, okay?

I promise.

But Bruno called me
and told me about the misunderstanding.

So I came here as fast as I could
to talk to you.

Carol, I would never do that to you.

I think you're beautiful, intelligent--
