Zmiennicy (1986–…): Season 1, Episode 13 - Spotkania z temida - full transcript

ALTERNATES

One life's not enough to handle
the abundance of the burden.

Episode XIII
MEETINGS WITH TEMIDA

Who'll replace you for a while?
Lessen daily problems file?

A trustworthy alternate,
him and you, hand in hand.

World's spinning, time's flowing,
life's passing.

And the voice that keeps repeating:
Radio Taxi, please hold on.

We shall wait, we'll hang on,
we shall get to where we're told.

Frankly speaking,
everything's got its price.

If you're not equal to a task,
your alternate's the one to ask.

The right man that takes things easy
though spare part's often missing.

Dear faithful alternate's like
a spare wheel when you need it.

We know well those bends and junctions
we respect our memories.

Radio Taxi, hold the line.

We will do with understanding
being also understood.

Our life's being reeled,
spinning like fast like a car's wheel.

Speed it up and scud along
your alternate'll keep the pace.

Spinning round the serpentines,
moving on or underground.

Radio Taxi please hold on.
We shall wait.

There has to be something... There
has to be something round the bend.

I'll manage.

This is a case of people
against Zenon Kusmider, Polish...

and Krashan Bahmaramadzara,
citizen of Siam.

They are accused of threatening
Jacek Zydkiewicz...

and forcing him to
abandon his vehicle.

- Good morning.
- Good morning.

Please, we have
a place there.

- They might call me here.
- No, please.

- What brings you here?
- I'm here for my intelligence.

Six months ago I was
on duty in the museum.

It was just before closing
time, I was observing people.

Then I saw a red haired man in
front of Malczewski painting...

take out a plan of Warsaw. He
started studying it carefully.

- I thought he was a dumb thief.
- Why?

Most famous painters have
streets named after them.

Like Falat Street, Grottger
Street, Matejko Street.

So the man wanted to see if
Malczewski had his street, yes?

To see if the painting was
by a famous painter, yes?

Why do you say
he was dumb then?

We have only great works
of art in our museum.

Each painting is measured,
photographed and described.

Selling something like
that is a great risk.

A smart thief would steal
a small Medieval miniature...

made of terracotta,
for example a Tanagra.

And you knew all that?
Was it written on his forehead?

I followed him
to make sure.

He went to the buffet,
bought cheese sandwiches...

wrapped them in the plan
and put in his pocket.

Why did he wrap them
in the plan of Warsaw?

Because the buffet was out of paper.
But then I was sure.

He wanted to wait till the
museum is closed, eat his supper...

steal, hide and in the morning
leave with other tourists.

I figured that out and
told the security chief.

They found the guy hiding
in a sarcophagus.

The professor congratulated me.
I'm here for my intelligence.

I'm more often in court than
standing in line for meat.

- Witness Maria Piorecka.
- Here.

I love Poland. I've been
studying here for years.

I admire the people who work
here and sow by the Vistula.

I love Poland so much that
I wish Siam could be Poland.

Last time I was
in my country...

a friend asked me to take back
some sugar for her friends.

I told her that
had no sense.

But she was like an ass,
I couldn't persuade her.

She was a victim of
foreign publications.

I took 5 kg of sugar.

At the airport a man had
a small sausage and a big problem.

I got scared and went to the telephone
booth. I left the bag of sugar.

After I went through customs
I regretted leaving the sugar.

I saw a man in a beautiful uniform.
I asked him for help.

He said he'd try. I asked him
to bring the sugar to the motel...

because I didn't have
any Polish money on me...

and I can't pay a government
official in foreign currency.

When the fireman brought
the sugar to my motel...

I gave him tea
as a reward.

When we were adding sugar to
the tea the police came in...

and they started
shouting at us.

They were outraged. They
were looking for some diaper.

I got very scared
and I lost a shoe.

I got away and caught
a taxi in front of the motel.

I jumped in and on the way we
picked up the scared fireman.

We were getting
away in the cab.

And I told the cab driver
to chase the train.

I said if he caught the
train I'd pay him double.

I wanted to wait abroad
till all this quieted down.

And then the
taxi driver said...

I see you're criminals
on the run from the law.

I will hand you in unless
you pay me $1000.

Have mercy, I don't
have any dollars.

Neither do I. It's
forbidden in our country.

Think about it. I can
wait but the train won't.

Mister I will save
you for free.

No way. Take my luggage
from the hotel.

I will give you
a written permission.

We took off the taxi signs,
the number and went after the train.

And the fireman
drove the car.

In Kutno the train hadn't
arrived yet so we went to eat.

And then this woman said that
the train had already left.

You be the waiter from Kutno.

- Why?
- Just for a sec.

- I'm standing in front of you.
- Don't worry everything will be OK.

I'm very sorry.

I'm sorry but you once served
my sister's son and his friend.

Now you are a witness
at his trial.

Could be but we don't accept
complaints about food.

There are no complaints.
I think your tip was too small.

Half now, half
after dinner.

That day Mr. Krashan asked me
to bring the bag of sugar...

which he by accident left by
the phone in the customs area.

I am a helpful person
by nature so I agreed.

But when I got to the hotel
I checked if it was really sugar.

I couldn't imagine
why he was...

carrying something that costs
200 zl at Rozycki's market.

When I was trying the sugar some
of it spilled into the sink.

Your honor, I'd like
to add something.

In the case file there is
a statement by the expert...

who tested the substance in the
sink a day after the incident.

The substance on the porcellanite
is 50% powdered sugar.

No drugs have been detected.

Then Mr. Krashan and I were
talking about this and that.

I was showing him my badge.

He was showing me real dollars
that I've never seen before.

We drank tea sweetened
with the sugar from the bag.

When the police cam
in Mr. Krashan ran away.

I thought that maybe
he had a bad conscience.

I didn't want to be mixed up in
anything so I also ran away.

Not thinking I grabbed
the bad with sugar.

It was heavy so I dumped
it in the gardens.

It was plum picking time so it
could be useful for making jam.

- Witness Borkowski.
- And me?

I thought I'd testify
fast and go buy a quilt.

But I see uniformed
persons have priority.

You can get quilts in the
Megasam supermarket in Grochow.

On October 5th I was doing
a routine check in Sawa hotel...

connected with a prostitute
suspected of robbery.

While conducting the check
I knocked on door 317...

where Mrs. Marcjanna
Kuban was checked in.

It turned out Mr. Bahamandzara
was staying there.

I asked him several
times to open the door.

There was no response so
I asked the head clerk...

to open the door
with the extra key.

In room 317 I saw defendants
Kusmider and Bahamandzara...

counting capitalist bank
notes known as dollars.

There was also a bag
with heroin on the table.

I analyzed the situation and
tried to capture the criminals.

I was assisted by Boryczko
who went to call back up.

The defendant tried to
escape through the toilet.

I managed to capture
his right shoe.

In the meantime Kusmider
escaped from room 317.

In that situation I started
a chase but because of the bees...

I mean because of the taxi
it was unsuccessful.

Your honor, I'd like to ask
the witness a few questions.

Ask.

Where is the described drug
and foreign currency?

I told you that the
defendants took it with them.

How do you know the white
substance was heroin?

- I tasted it.
- Address the court, please.

We were trained to
recognize drugs.

Heroin, LSD, window cleaner,
all the drugs.

So within a second you can
carry out a complete analysis?

We'd like to call Mr. Kalina.

They could call witnesses
in alphabetical order.

That customs officer cam last.
I've been here since 7 am.

If there is no justice in court
forget about it in restaurants.

Witness Kurszynski,
please come to the stand.

Only civilians are left.

Testifying last is like a lottery.

You don't know what was said and
you can easily make a mistake.

And that might cost you.

You can say the truth.

You talk like a baby.

Truth hasn't done
anyone any good here.

A Fiat 125P was
stopped on the road.

The passengers weren't
wearing seat belts.

Inspection showed the taxi
signs had been removed.

The passengers were stopped for
not having a registration card.

- Did you find white powder in the car?
- No.

Were the defendants
carrying any money?

- Polish or foreign?
- Either.

- They had no money?
- Any further questions?

If not, the witness may step down.

Call witness...

Jacek Zydkiewicz is asked
to the stand.

Please make it short or
I'll miss my last train.

I was on Zwirki i Wigury
when this man stopped me.

He told me to take him to
the Central train station.

A second later I was
stopped by the other guy.

I took him on as an extra passenger.
The train to Berlin had already left...

they said they'd pay me if
I caught up with it in Kutno.

I agreed. I'm very sorry I did. The
other guy didn't get out of the cab.

They were arguing about heroin
and dollars so I got nervous.

Especially that they caught on
that I can hear them.

I realized my life was at stake.
They told me to stop in the woods...

but I said there were scouts
there and I drove on.

I slammed the brakes, the car
swerved and they lost balance.

I took advantage of it,
jumped out and ran away.

There are a few questions
that have to be asked.

Can the witness take
on an extra passenger?

Can he speed and lie about
people being in the woods?

Many offenses for one afternoon.

I was afraid for my life.

I'm only stating the facts.
The judge will interpret them.

In the light of this evidence
I ask Mr. Zydkiewicz be detained...

for further testimony.

The court agrees to
the defense?s request.

I ask the witness to
stay in the court room.

How was I?

Darn me. I don't think
they'll lock you up.

Now it's the waiter's turn.
I bet he'll turn some trick.

I was serving those
gentlemen that day.

I remember the colored one.
He wanted to eat in one shoe.

He said it was a religious custom.

They were arguing with each
other. So I listened in a bit.

Although in general
I don't do such things.

I have enough
of my own problems.

The foreigner said they should
go back for the chauffeur.

The other one said he'd handle
things and turn it into a joke.

The foreigner said:

why did you make up the story
about drugs and dollars?

The other said: I thought he'd
get excited and go faster.

You only scared him.
The shoeless guy said.

It'll be alright. That was the fireman.
That's about all I heard.

That day we were very busy
and I had a lot of work.

Anyway they soon paid
their bill and left.

How did they pay?

In zlotys. I'd never
touch a dollar.

Maybe not one but now he's
got a whole bunch of them.

Your honor in this case
my work isn't difficult.

Dear Jacek, I can't keep hiding
this from you. I feel guilty.

Marian Koniuszko and Katarzyna
Piorecka are the same person.

Give it back.

I'm your partner.

Give me cash for gum and
I'll think it over. 8 packs.

- I'll buy it for you.
- You don't say, are you joking?

Emergency situation.

Oltarzewska is leaving her mom.
Ladies and gentlemen in a moment...

Dzudoka, go to hell.

You could have hurt me,
my hand hurts.

- Never take such things.
- It's none of your business. Lay off.

Let me see.

She's setting my hand,
I fell over.

Let me see. You'll be OK.
Don't cry, you're a man.

Buy yourself some gum, kid.

Keep spoiling him like that.
He'll get gum everywhere again.

Jacek, listen to me and
don't interrupt till I finish.

I just put a letter
in your pocket...

but don't read it till
you get to Zatory.

Try to understand me
and forgive me.

I never wanted to lie to you.
What happened was my fault.

You wrote your big secret
down, didn't you?

Yes, but I have to explain...

- That you're my partner Marian?
- How long have you known?

- From the start.
- You love me?

- I love you.
- Tell me how.

I love you in the sunlight
and in the glow of candles.

I love you in the windy, on
a highway and at a concert.

I love you surrounded
by flowers or by trees.

I love you when you're seeping
and when you're working.

And when you crack an egg neatly.

Even when the spoon
slips out of your hand.

In a cab or in a car. At the beginning
of a street and at the end.

- Jacek.
- Kasia. I'm late.

- How did it end?
- They were guilty of breaking...

customs law, using a vehicle
without the owner's permission.

They found so many
extenuating circumstances...

that the fireman will be out
in 3 weeks at the most...

and the Siamese guy would have
been out today but it's Friday.

They're so superstitious?

No. He has to go back
where he came from.

Back to jail you mean?

Yes. Tomorrow is a Saturday
and after that it's Sunday...

and the court house is closed
and they write the releases.

But he's innocent.

If he weren't he'd be put away
for a much longer time.

What disgusts you most in life?

- Rats.
- I'm disgusted by lies.

That lying lawyer made me
into a coward and a cheat.

I don't care if a guy is a jerk,
a drunk, or a bully.

He can even be up tight.
But I hate liars.

Lies stick to us and devour us.

- Aspirin?
- No. I'm allergic to it.

I get pimples and sores
and goose bumps.

You're all wet.
You'll catch a cold.

- Better now?
- great.

It's not great.
You're cold.

- What is it?
- I'll tell you in 10 years.

But remember the time and date.

oh good. There's a free cab.
You want a ride?

Yes, but only to the Centrum
department store.

A friend told me that
I can get socks there.

Where are the damn keys.

I wonder what happened
with the dollars and the heroin?

I bet they gave the heroin
to a partner.

It's an old pick pocket's trick.
In case you get caught.

Big money was at stake.

How strange. It's raining
there and here it's lovely.

It's always nicer in the center.

Can we meet tomorrow?
My car will be in the garage.

- I'm working tomorrow.
- Too bad.

I'll go to court. My partner is
a witness in the Mercedes case.

Maybe he'll feel uncomfortable
testifying with you...

I'll go there to give him moral
support. He asked me to.

What's so funny?

I remembered the waiter's
testimony. He finished...

testifying and started looking
for a middle aged foreigner.

You know who I mean?
I heard about it.

He was even bugging the student
from the third world.

But he denied everything. Made
the waiter a laughing stock.

He probably also got a share
of the dollars.

They were probably fake bills.

This way they didn't lose everything.
I was right to burn them.

I'd like to know where Marian
Koniuszko is testifying.

In room 214.

But he's not a witness.
It's an alimony case.

Don't worry, whatever
happens happens.

Though I warned you
not to chase women.

Why did he come here?

Your work place must have
been notified. He's curious.

The plaintiff probably doesn't
know your address, like me.

I really live anywhere.
I crash at my friends' places.

So far I haven't had luck
looking for an apartment.

Maybe it's better he's here.
Maybe you'll get a rise.

You'll have more expenses
now for a few years.

- Where's your lawyer?
- Why do I need a lawyer?

Can't anything be done
about this?

- The women always win.
- Why the hell did he come here?

It's good your son is with you.
That'll impress the court.

And often the man denying
his fatherhood feels guilty.

Only your son has black hair
and that guy had blond hair.

He's got black hair
after his grandfather.

The important thing is that
the blood types match.

We have the pictures, recorded
conversations, witnesses.

I've never had such an easy case. And
another good thing is that we got...

judge Zembrzuska, she's honest
and cares about women's rights.

I think she never ruled
in favor of the man.

Anyway this is only about
recompensation and alimony.

God bless you, counselor.

Let's not mix supernatural
powers into this.

The case of Maria Grzybianka
against Marian Koniuszko.

Be a man.

- The plaintiff Maria Grzybianka.
- That's me.

- And her attorney Mr. Brok.
- Assigned to the case.

The defendant Marian
Koniuszko, in person.

- In a way.
- Explain to the court.

- Can I whisper it to the judge?
- There are no secrets in court.

Can I borrow your pen?

- Pen.
- Face the court.

I'm sorry.

I'm a woman.

I want the child to
leave the court room.

What am I supposed to do with him?
I'm a single mother and the father...

Put him under someone's care
for the time of the proceedings.

I would like everyone to
leave the court room.

Everyone except the
sides and the attorney.

- Good bye.
- I'll wait.

- What should I do with him?
- Let her watch him.

- Why me?
- Watch him.

May I be made familiar
with the statement?

Will the defendant
explain his statement?

My employer was
in the court room.

The thing is taxi companies
don't hire women drivers.

So I was forced...

Hi.
How beautiful.

You're Godsend.
Let me borrow your kid.

If I come with a kid I'll
testify and they'll let me go.

That's just as well for me.
What case is it?

Private property of a government
official's been violated.

I know, Kulebiak.

No. He came on a delegation
and met Cecha.

- She assaulted him?
- No. He assaulted her.

He broke his hand or something.

The plaintiff is asked
to the court room.

I'll be back in a few minutes.
It won't take long.

Do you still support
your claims?

Sure. I'd recognize him
anywhere. That's him.

I saw them together in
bed after intercourse.

- Leave the court room.
- I'm sorry.

The plaintiff is to stay.
Do you support that claim?

Absolutely. I don't believe
his discrimination story.

Do you still support
the plaintiff's claims?

One moment. I'd like to
see the evidence again.

Of course.

I must be mistaken.

I'm withdrawing the charges.

- Do you agree to that?
- Sure.

Rise.

After hearing the case the court
decided to dismiss the case.

That is the ruling of this court.

- Based on art. 355, par. 1.
- OK. Thank you.

What have you done? You have no
idea who you're dealing with.

To sue someone like that.

Does that Koniuszko have
special preferences?

Such a professional couldn't
tell the difference.

That was obviously a woman.

You are an embarrassment
to our trade.

- I work like an ox and you lie.
- I think I've gone crazy.

- Where's the kid?
- I lent it to Lilka.

- You lent it?
- Are you stupid? She needed it...

I'm 100% sure that Koniuszko
has friends in high places.

- You're talking about mikes?
- Mikes, wires, amps and all that.

- I've never seen such a case.
- Got to promote.

I've always liked that boy.

Hello. Confession hot line.

Someone put a sign on the 3rd
distributor. You know what?

They wrote "third distributor".

It was Walczak from the second shift.

- You trust him?
- Second shift.

- Thank you.
- Bye.

Congratulations on your promotion.

I'm sure you won't let down
the trust we have in you.

I also hope you have a good
opinion about our management.

If something's wrong I hope
you'll let me know.

Stop it. Anyone
can make a mistake.

To the end.

We have to think of something.
All you can do is cry.

I have to worry about everything.

- And what have I got for it?
- Maybe we should try the father?

You'd have to have
something on Klusek.

Don't cry, just tell me
something more about him.

Isn't he your friend?

What am I supposed to say?
He's just like everyone else.

- Maybe he's perverted?
- No, he just asked me to march.

- Naked?
- Didn't matter.

He told me to put on these high
boots, a uniform and a cap.

And then he told me to march.

He told me to lift my legs up high.
Face right. Face left. Attention.

And after that he was normal.

My brother in law is in
the army. He's sergeant.

He's a drill specialist.
We'll have to talk to him.

Maybe your woman friend
could bring up the car?

Don't be stupid. You screwed up
the transport and the money.

None of my people take
part in stealing cabs.

You better think fast. That
fireman is getting out any day.

And I don't want to see you
without the money.

Attention.

Attention, face right.

Turn around.

At ease.

Turn left.

Look right.

Look left.

One more time.
Get down, up, get down, up.

- Good morning. Is the chairman in?
- He's busy.

He's accepting a junior
into our team.

We work in the same field.

- It was so long ago.
- Not really. Just a year.

- You took some souvenir.
- It wasn't what you think.

Drink, it's an order.

- All of it.
- Yes sir.

- Put it down.
- Yes sir.

Do you know I've been looking
for you in all the hotels?

I've changed. I'm not
like I used to be.

You're much better,
I can put that in writing.

Witness's testimony will do.

- What is this about?
- Alimony.

I think we can work something out
without a court case.

I mean, how much do those
parades cost us.
