XIII: The Series (2011–…): Season 1, Episode 12 - The Key - full transcript

All three watches are finally assembled, but their secrets cannot be revealed with the correct password. Can XIII crack the code in time?

Previously on XIII...

Irina: There were 3 microchips,
smuggled in the back watches.

XIII: The files are
incomplete.

It cuts off in the end
in mid code.

One of the watches is with
a man named Robert Simons,

Irina: Another,
with a Max Serle.

Why'd Gerhardt make it
so easy for us to find them?

Gerhardt: You'll find
some that lead to

the missing part
of the weapon information.

Sheridan: XIII is on the trail
of the last watch.

I need you to find it
before he does.

Amos: And if Wally Sheridan
was some how behind

the oil refinery
bombings last week,

then that means oil
and energy reserves

are some how part
of his big plan.

Jones: Max serle.

Declared unfit for service
for psych reasons.

He had paranoid schizophrenia.

XIII: Watch out!

(Gun fire)

Max: Gerhardt had a recruiter,
he was Gerhardt's plant!

Max: He knew what was in
the computers at Renelco,

he was gonna make sure
it was never re-created!

You didn't kill those people.

He wanted you
to steal a weapon,

something that terrified
you when you found it.

It's not a gift I'm giving you.

It's a curse.

(Explosion)

XIII: Find out what's on
these damn watches,

we take the game to Gerhardt.

Jones: Hey.

How's it going?

I've uploaded the data
from the third watch,

it fills in the missing
lines of code

from the first two
watches, but...

it's still heavily encrypted.

How's the leg?

Tender but I'll live.

So have you run all this
through a decryption program?

Yeah, linux xlr, trillian,

and something called
polar crypto.

I'm impressed.

Don't be, nothing worked.

We need someone who lives
and breathes this stuff.

You thinking Dillon?

He's a little flaky but at
least we can control him.

Where'd he go after moscow?

Last I heard was he was working

at a factory on 12th and Oak.

Even if we get
this stuff decrypted

we still have to figure out
how to activate it.

Yeah, which means...

Jump-starting
my memory.

You know I think
the next step is locate

the recruiter Max talked about.

Jones: Elliot Reed,
yeah.

Look, before
we get into that...

I just came from
a meeting with Amos.

The president sees
the Renelco program

as a matter of
national security.

He's demanding you
hand it over immediately.

Or?

Or they arrest you for treason.

They're going to throw
me in prison again?

That threat's
getting a little old.

This is serious.

It's been serious
since I first stole

the program from Renelco.

Until I figure out what it is,

I'm not giving it to anyone.

Are you really intending
on going to war

with the U.S.
Government?

(Beeping)

(Alarm sounding)

We've got maybe ten seconds.

Grab that chart,
take the side door.

What about you?

I'll meet you
at Dillon's in an hour.

(Explosion)

(Motorcycle engine revving)

Amos: Jones?

Jones!

Amos: Where is it?!

XIII has it!

I told you to keep him here

until we could
secure the weapon.

And I told you that storming
the castle wouldn't work!

Listen to me, sir.

You and the president
have made perfectly clear

the threat you believe
that program represents

to our nation's security
and I promise you,

I will do everything
in my power

to protect my country.

But if you want
to acquire that program

intact and operational,

we have got to do
this on my terms.

I don't care how you do it,

just get me the program.

I was a secret agent.

Betrayed by my own people.

Robbed of my face,
my memories, my history.

Hidden in my past

is a secret that
threatens all humanity.

I search for answers
with nothing to hold onto

but the tattoo that
has become my name.

I am XIII.

I'm telling you,
carrington is vulnerable.

Come next November,
the public is going

to be clamoring
for new leadership.

I need the Midwest, Angelo,

you're the only one
who can deliver it.

Staff: Welcome, sir.

Secretary of state?

Yeah, listen, I'm going to
be in Chicago next week

why don't we have dinner?

Alright, I'll talk
to you then, senator.

Was that Borelli?

He wants state.

Would you vote for a man who

would make Angelo Borelli
secretary of state?

No, but that's the
beauty about making

cabinet appointments
after you win.

In the meantime, the campaign
war-chest is growing.

We just received a
very generous donation

from the allied farm workers.

So where do we stand?

Eighteen million.

That still leaves us about
eighty two million short.

Come on, relax.
Okay?

The real money doesn't come in

until you officially declare.

And when you do, the
contributions will roll in.

Whoa! Ahhh!

Are you insane?!

I'm not the one surrounded
lifife-size Ken and Barbies.

You blew out my eardrums, dude.

What- what are you
doing here, Dillon?

Nothin'.

What the hell are you
guys doing here?

How did you find me?

Doesn't matter.
We need your help.

Oh, you need my help?

Well, the first time
that I helped you,

I ended up with a
number two ticonderoga

jammed into my thigh
and then tossed in prison.

Last time, I helped you
I ended up in Russia

with a psycho safecracker...
And you,

yes, you still owe me
for that sweet jacket.

Forget this.
Let's get someone else.

I don't think there's anybody
else that can do this.

Come on, you guys!

This "good cop, bad cop"
routine is not going to work.

Neither is bribery,
flattery or threats.

Just show yourselves out.
I've got stuff to do.

Oh, yeah? Like what?
Get back to the party?

No.

The stuff belongs
to a buddy of mine

he's letting me crash here.

The dolls are kinda creepy,

but they come with the place.

Look...

just hear us out.
Alright?

Remember when you helped us
get down to Costa Verde?

The pencil in the
femur trip right?

We went to check out
a corporation, okay?

Called Renelco.

Somebody stole
a very dangerous piece

of software from them.

Dangerous how?

We're hoping you could tell us.

This is weird...

It's advanced as hell
but it's written

in an old programming language.

Old, like five or six
years old?

Exactly.

Dillon: It's not letting me
into the core library.

Can you tell us what it does?

No way....

No effin' way...

Come on, Dillon,
talk to us, what is it?

Um...

for the past couple
of years, there's been

an urban legend among hackers

about something called
"the skeleton key."

What'd it do?

Theoretically, it opens
any program, anytime,

anywhere and gives
you complete control.

It's the hacker's holy grail.

And you think that's
what this is?

I can't tell for sure,
but I'd love a crack at it.

How long is it going
to take to decipher?

No idea.

Looks like there's dozens
of layers of encryptions,

and then it's probably
password protected.

It's going to take a while.

You babysit, I gotta go
make a house call.

XIII: Careful.

This blade is sharp.

What are you doing here?
What do you want?

I thought we might catch up.

In the middle of the night?
With a knife at my throat?

Called your secretary
for an appointment,

but you were busy.

Do you you mind if I sit up?

I'm just going
to turn on the light.

I assume you took out
the two guards downstairs.

You assume right, so
don't bother screaming.

I find screaming undignified.

Where can I find Elliot Reed?

Never heard of him.

CIA. Recruiter for
the Costa Verde job.

Did some dirty
work for you when

you were in the oval office.

You let me know when

any of this starts
to sound familiar.

Or what, you'll kill me?

If I kill you, I don't get
the answers I need.

I was thinking more about
rearranging your face.

Elliot Reed.

As far as I know,
he still does occasional

freelance work for the agency.

And he has a side
business running black-market

pharmaceuticals
somewhere in silver spring.

What else?

He goes by the name
Dr. Elias Redding.

And that's all I know!
I swear.

How's my son?

I try not to get involved in

other people's personal issues.

You should do the same.

Dillon?

Jones.
Where are you!?

On my way to a meeting.
I can't talk right now.

Dillon's gone, I thought
you were staying here?

I was, but I got called in

for a one- on-one.
I had no choice.

He took the laptop.

What?

Forget it, he's back.
I'll talk later.

Doughnut?

Where the hell were you?!

I needed fuel.

You don't walk out
with the laptop.

What'd you think,
I skipped town with this?

I'll admit, the thought
crossed my mind,

but then I envisioned
myself in jail.

Or, in an alley
with my throat slit.

I figured the laptop
was safer with me

than leaving it here.

You don't go out.
Period!

You want something,
you call it in.

Oh, so that's how it is now.

House arrest.

This deal just gets
better all the time!

Where are we with this?

I've never seen
anything like it.

Normal encryptions
are in layers,

so you can peel them
back one at a time.

But, not this puppy.

They're all protected
with a dozen layers

of different encryptions.

It's like...

trying to read a book where

one chapter was
written in Chinese,

one in cyrillic and
another in hieroglyphics

and then the pages
are fed through

a shredder and
pasted back together.

Sounds kinda complicated.

That's like saying the
universe sounds kinda big

or Natalie Portman
is kinda hot.

I spoke to our experts about
this so-called "skeleton key."

If that's what
the Renelco program is,

its potential is
virtually unlimited.

Yes, I know.

It's terrifying.

And incredibly useful.

I've already briefed
the president.

He would like to know

precisely when it will
be delivered to us.

I have no idea.

You are trying my patience
now, agent Jones.

With all due respect, sir...

my patience is spread
very thin as well right now.

I've spent the last
several months

risking life
and limb in pursuit

of those chips on behalf
of the U.S. government.

I sincerely hope that
you and the president

are not questioning my loyalty!

It's not a question of loyalty.

It's a question
of tactics and timing.

You have seen what happens

when you try to use force.

You can go in there
with the army

and seize that laptop
at gunpoint,

but it is of absolutely
no use to you

if the program
is not activated.

I have a building full
of cryptologists

and computer programmers.

Yes, you do, but
you don't have XIII.

Everything we've been
through up to this point

points to him being the
final piece in the puzzle.

Fine.

Do it your way.

But, I want to see
progress - fast.

Dr. Redding?

Before we discuss my services,

can I ask who referred you?

Wally Sheridan.

You're not here for
pharmaceuticals, are you?

You know who I am.

The recruiter.

Recruiter...

This is about Renelco?

Should I know you?

Used to go by the
name of Ryan flay.

Of course.

The infamous XIII.

They did a great
job on your face.

I like it well enough.

Before we go any further,
you should know

that I've got a man
over by those trees.

(Gun shot)

I say the word, the next one

puts a hole in your chest.

Call it malpractice insurance.

I'm not looking for trouble.

Just information.

Tell me about the incursion.

I recruited four men.

Simons, Serle,
Kelton and O'Neill.

Me.

Not you.

Seamus O'Neill.

He was on the original squad.

But he, uh...

Went missing.

You took his place,

along with his name as cover.

Why me?

You weren't my choice.

Frankly, I wasn't
even aware of you

until the coordinator
brought you in.

You got a name?

They brought in an
asset from overseas.

A man named Sean Mullway.

I know that guy.

The name's Mullway.
Sean.

He used to live in Glenlarkin.

Last I heard, he's here in DC.

How do I find him?

Give me your number

and I'll call you
with the details.

Sure you don't need any drugs?

Percodan, oxycontin,

maybe a little Xanax
or nebutal?

I'm good.

I hear you've gone
off the reservation,

lost your edge.

Is that what you hear?

You walked in here
fully exposed.

(Gun shot)

Lady up in the trees.

Call it life insurance.

(Phone ringing)

Yeah.

Mullway: I hear you're
looking for me.

Yeah, I'm at the meeting spot.

It's been changed.

Madison and Linwood,
ten minutes.

That's all the way across town.

Madison and Linwood.

So this whole thing
was a set up?

No.

Just taking precautions.

What now?

Did Gerhardt pay you
to kill me?

I'm not the kind of man
to shoot my own son.

Son?

Would you like a drink?

Look, I didn't come
for a social visit.

Where do I start?

Tell me about Renelco.

Straight to business huh?

How did I get hooked in?

You were never
meant to be there.

Seamus O'Neill was
on board for a while

but he got himself killed.

I had to fill the spot.

I was running out of time,

I decided to
take the job myself.

And then you pulled
a few strings

and took my place.

Probably saved my life.

Yeah, and destroyed mine.

Why would I volunteer
to take your place?

Because I'm your father.

No, Jonathan Flay is my father.

Sit down.

Your mother and I
had you 35 years ago.

We called you
Jason Peter Mullway.

You were named
after my brother.

Your mother...

God bless her soul...

she died when you
were a wee baby.

It quickly became obvious
I wasn't cut out

to raise a child on my own.

So you shipped me
off to Green Falls?

To a good man.

Jonathan Flay.

He always wanted a son,

he couldn't have
children of his own.

He did right by you.

Much better than I
ever could've done.

Why should I
believe any of this?

Come here.

I got something to show you.

A picture of the family
in happier times.

You've got her eyes.

Some letters you
sent me from Boulder.

Some drawings you did
when you were a wee fella.

All of this is easily faked.

DNA can't be faked.

Why the hell didn't you tell me

about this in Ireland?

When I saw what you were up to,

I thought telling you then

would only complicate things.

I've been bothered by
that decision ever since.

What are you doing here in DC?

Tracking you.

I know you found
the third watch.

Have you deciphered
the program yet?

No.

Let me help you.

You can trust me.

Trust you?

Father or not...

I don't even know who you are.

Thanks for the drink.

Gerhardt:
Is everything set?

Ready on this end.

Has the money been wired?

It's sitting in
your bank account,

collecting interest
as we speak.

Give me the word
and it'll be done.

Proceed.

Dillon: What took
so long?

I'm developing a severe case

of raster burn
and I'm starving here.

I go get you food and
you give me a hard time?

Was your boy who put
me on house arrest.

Hey, we're on a time
crunch here, alright?

You can eat, but keep
working while you do it.

Won't Ryan get pissed if
I get sauce on the keyboard?

XIII: Yeah.

How're we doing?

Good, I almost got all the
lines of code defragged.

Few more minutes
and we can test it.

Great.

So, um...

How did it go with Mullway?

Not the way I expected.

He's my father.

Your father?

Wow.

Ladies and gentlemen...

Dillon: Behold.

You did it.

Dillon:
Just what I thought.

It's password protected,

which is actually
kind of ironic.

Can't you run it through
a password decryption app?

Eight digits -
Alpha-numeric...

the permutations are
2.7 trillion combinations.

It could take days.

Any ideas?

Dillon: No.

Am I missing something?

Why would he know the password?

Because he's
the one that set it.

(Dillon laughing)

Seriously?

You...

Did this?

It was a mission.
I found it, encrypted it,

locked it with a password

and divided it up.

You did this...
Encryption?

Then I got shot.

And lost my memory.

Well, that's, uh...
that's some heavy stuff.

We gotta try something...

your birthday?

Mother's maiden name?
First pet?

Dillon...

I'm sorry...

it's just you know,
there's degrees

of memory loss, right?

Yeah.

Okay, I'll start on
a decoding app

and maybe we'll get lucky.

You know what, maybe there is

someone who can
answer these questions.

Mullway?

What've we got?

We just received a report
from our agent in Qatar.

The prime minister
has been assassinated.

Do we have any information?

Nothing yet.

Okay, everybody, stay on this.

I want a full rundown.

I figure you know me better
than I know myself.

It wouldn't be something simple

like your birthday.

Or your mother's maiden name.

Knowing you...

It's something much
more complex than that.

That's what I'm afraid of.

Let's take a different tact.

How'd you come by the watch?

It was in a safe deposit
box in New York.

Was there anything
in the box with it?

A ring.
A claddagh ring.

I gave you a claddagh
ring when you were ten.

It was your mother's.

I was told you wore it
every day after that.

Then it definitely
has something

to do with opening the program.

Maybe I inscribed
something on the inside.

Where's the ring now?

It's at the safe house.

Can you get to it?

I can try.

Thanks.

You can thank me
by letting me help you.

Target has just
left the safe house.

Crack!

Asset is on the move.

Don't you lose him.

Nothing there.
Try another angle.

How about this?

What's that?

That looks like an
after-market upgrade.

Dillon: A micro dot.

I'm betting it's an rfid.

An electronic key?

Dude...

I am impressed.
You clearly wielded

some deep magic
in your former life,

I don't even know
what that means.

It means...

Dillon: We've got liftoff.

Ho-Lee crap.

That is beautiful.

If there's a flare, it will
be in this region right here.

Director! Sir...

reports are coming in
agent Lang's been killed.

Amos: What happened?

They found his body
in a dumpster

a block away
from the safe house.

How was he killed?

How was he killed?

His neck was broken.

Blatcher thinks that
XIII is responsible.

Come in.

Mr. Gerhardt.

The scanner has picked up
the code sequence.

They're in.

Good, it's time to
reclaim my property.

Director Amos,
agent Jones on line two.

Yes.

The program' been activated.

Excellent. Get it
and bring it in.

When the time is right.

The time is now, Jones!

The only way I can
bring you the program now

is to walk in and shoot Dillon,

Mullway and XIII.

Perfect, I can have
a clean up team

there in ten minutes.

That's very generous of you,

but I think I'll do it my way.

So you know what
you're dealing with, Jones,

XIII killed one of
our agents last night.

Are you sure?

It was right outside
the safe house.

He is out of control.

Well, I can handle him.

And what about Sean Mullway?

He would not think twice
about taking you out.

Jones: Listen...

I told you I'd get
you that program

and I'll do it.

You have one hour.
After that,

I'm sending in a team,
and I cannot guarantee

that there will not
be casualties.

One hour!

What are you doing?

Running a test.

I just wiped out my record
with the government!

This program rocks!

Are you crazy? What if
they can trace that?

No? Fine.

I was about to give you
a salary bump.

Look, we know this
program's powerful.

The question is,
how versatile is it?

Think it's possible
for you to break into

a system and not
tamper with it?

Name one.

Moscow city power grid.

Moscow.
We've come full circle.

I can shut down
the entire city,

specific quadrants,
or go block by block...

Like so...

did you really just
blackout moscow?

Dillon: A couple
of streets.

I can see why this is so
important to Gerhardt.

There's no limit
to what it can do.

Well, that's the point.

Power grids are child's play.

This program can
access anything.

Banks...Hell,
treasury departments,

stock markets,
nuclear weapon systems...

We need to destroy this.

Definitely.

But not quite yet.

I need you to do me
a little favour.

Sheridan: What happened
in Qatar is disastrous.

When I was in office
I opened back channels

with the prime minister.

For the past year I have been

helping him put things in place

for an orderly shift in power.

Like a coup.

Now that he's been killed,
his followers will rise up!

There could be major fallout!

And not just in Qatar,
but throughout the region!

Which will make
gas prices skyrocket.

Which is what we want.

Not at the cost of taking out
my primary asset

in the middle east!

He was my ace in the hole!

(Phone ringing)

Sorry, I got to take this.

Yes?

You're sure?

Yeah, no, I'll call you back.

What?

We got a problem.

Oh, what, another one?

The finance funds
have disappeared.

What do you mean, disappeared?

Eighteen million dollars
doesn't just evaporate.

I know, tell it to the
Hudson mutual bank.

The money's gone.

I have to get a hold
of Gerhardt.

I hope the world wildlife fund

puts this 18 mil to good use.

Now that you've finished
your charity work

it's time to destroy
the program.

Dillon: What?
That's heresy!

Would you burn the
gutenberg Bible?

I would if I thought
it could control

nuclear weapon systems.

You can't destroy this.
Just think about

what our government
could do with it.

We could virtually
stamp out terrorism

with a couple of key strokes!

What makes you think
it's going to stop there?

The government gets
their hands on this,

that's the ultimate
big brother scenario.

You said yourself,
you didn't destroy

the program originally
because it could be

used defensively if someone
else tried to re-create it!

Well, now that I've
seen what it can do,

I'm convinced
the only option is

to grind it into little pieces.

I spoke to the emir.

He said his brother...

who's also the prime minister,

was planning a coup.

Will they be able
to restore peace?

That's a good question.

The region's a powder keg.

First the refinery
fires and now this.

Oil prices are going
to shoot up,

and your approval ratings
are going to plummet.

You think I care about
my approval ratings?

No, sir.

I think you care
about the American public,

and what's best for them,
is this administration,

although some people
are working very hard

to undermine it.

So you think this murder
was designed to weaken me?

The thought has
crossed my mind.

We don't have any proof.

We'd have proof if we
had the Renelco program.

Where the hell is it?

I anticipate it being in
my hands within the hour.

You make it happen.

Ryan, this weapon is
a total game changer, ok?

I just think we can't
destroy it without thinking

through all of the
ramifications first.

The ramifications are obvious.

It's a pandora's box.

Once we've opened it it's
the beginning of the end,

there will be no stopping it.

You haven't thought about
the upside of the program.

Let's just get it out of here,

we'll take it someplace safe

and figure out wtt
to do with it then.

Can I have a word with you?

Do you know where
her allegiance lies?

She's like us...She
walks the line.

Some days she's on one side,

some days she's on the other.

What are you going to do?

Do you know all the facts
about the Renelco mission?

What are you saying?

Gerhardt wasn't
the only one trying

to get that program
out of Renelco.

The roots of this entire
operation run extremely deep.

Dillon: I think
we might have a problem!

Those are Gerhardt's men!

Dillon: Well, that
can't be good...

Where are you going?

Take the computer.
Go.

What are you talking about?

It's too late for all
of us to get out.

Don't do this.
You don't owe me anything.

Yes, I do, but this
isn't about us.

This goes much deeper.

Jones: Ryan!

I'll be fine, son.
Trust me with this.

I'll trust you to do
the right thing with that.

Go.
Now.

Dillon: Let's go!

XIII: Look,
I'm going back!

Jones: Ryan!

That's my father.
I'm not leaving him.

Give me the laptop then,
in case something happens.

Dillon: Guys,
come on, let's go!

Get Dillon out of here!

Go!

Sir, Jones on the line.

Put her on the speaker.

Do you have the package?

Negative.

Gerhardt sent in a squad.

What's your twenty?

I'm outside the target area.

And the package?

Inside.

With XIII and Mullway.

I am sending in a team now!

Red team go!

Blue team go!

If things go sideways,
burn the damn building,

and everyone inside
it, to the ground!

Mullway: Is that
all you got?

Mullway: I'm telling you,
you got the wrong fella.

Mullway: Have you
ever been to belfast?

Move away from him!

(Gun shotsiriring)

You came back.

Didn't think I'd really
leave you here, did you?

Like you said,
I know you better

than you know yourself.

When we get outside...

we'll split up.

Give 'em something
to think about.

Jones: Shots fired
inside the building.

Red team, blue team
what's happening?

Still two minutes to target.

(Phone ringing)

Yeah?

Gerhardt: You have
my program.

Yeah, you'll never see it.

Then you'll never see
your father again.

Mullway: Don't
listen to him!

Gerhardt: Garage at Fifth and Lincoln.
Five minutes.

I'm here!

Mullway: Get the hell
out of here!

The prodigal son.

You have the program?

Yeah!

Don't give it to him!
He'll kill us both!

Enough!

I have what you want!

Let's make the trade!

Good. I send my
technician to check it.

Mullway: Don't
give it to him!

Mullway: My life's
not worth it!

Wait!

Release him!

Get him up.
Send him.

Go!

I hope to hell
you've got a plan!

The plan's to get you out
of here in one piece.

XIII: Get down!

(Gun shots firing)

(Gun shots firing)

(Gun shot)

(Gun shots firing)

Jones: Stand down!

Thanks to you, our worst
fears have been realized.

I fail to understand
how you could

hand over potentially the
most dangerous weapon

the world's ever known
to a man like Ranier Gerhardt.

He had a gun
to my father's head.

Your father was CIA.

He understood
the risks involved.

And I can assure you...

That Sean Mullway
would not have traded

the key to armageddon
for your life.

Well, I guess we'll never know.

Is there any information that

you are holding back
about Gerhardt?

Like what?

Like something that
might help us locate him.

Don't you have agents
all over the world.

You know, bang down some doors.

Talk to agent Jones.

I'm sure she has
a line on Gerhardt.

Agent Jones is on
administrative leave.

Did your dad say something
that might be a lead?

Gerhardt wasn't
the only one trying

to get that program
out of Renelco.

The roots of this entire
operation run extremely deep.

No.
Nothing.

I'm going to keep you here

until I figure out
exactly what to do with you.

Look, do whatever
the hell you want,

just stop talking.

I'm going to make sure
you get a lethal injection

for murdering agent lang.

I don't even know who that is.

The man whose neck you broke

outside the safe house.

It wasn't me.

What about the two men
in the garage?

That was me.

What makes you think...

That you can take the law
into your own hands, XIII?

How can you, a all people,

say that with a straight face?

I'm sorry about your father.

It's most unfortunate.

The way everything went down.

Your father.

Gerhardt.

The Renelco program.

Yeah.

I am in your debt...

for the service you've given
to your country

and the sacrifices
you have made.

And for the fact...

you saved the life
of my grandson.

But you have put me
and this country

in a very tough position.

Now, I realize nothing
I say will stop you

from going after Gerhardt...

and trying to avenge the
death of your father.

But, I think...

you've already done
enough damage.

So, I'm asking you
to stand down.

If you go anywhere
near that weapon,

I'll have you arrested.

If you resist arrest,
you will be shot.

Have I made myself clear?
