Wonder Woman (1975–1979): Season 3, Episode 8 - Skateboard Wiz - full transcript

Diana spends her vacation with friends in California. As Wonder Woman, she uncovers an illegal gambling organization with the help of a young skateboarder who also happens to have a photographic memory.

'You really need
all this luggage?'

You're only gonna be gone
for two weeks.

Yes, I intend to make up
for lost time.

You know,
"California, here I come."

"Santa Corona." What made you
decide to go there?

Remember Leslie O'Neill?

'She worked downstairs'

'as a supervisor in Personnel.'

Yeah, young, widowed,
teenage daughter?

Yeah, well, Leslie took a job
with the city of Santa Corona

and wrote me
saying that next time

I needed a vacation,
I should stop by, so..

Well, I thought you'd be going
someplace really exciting

like Hawaii or the Rockies
or the Caribbean.

The reason I'm going
to Santa Corona, Steve

is that the worst thing
that can happen there

is that I run out
of suntan lotion.

Hey, you sign up for
the skateboard competition yet?

- Nah.
- Why not?

Me, skateboard
in front of 200 people?

More like five judges.

It's only the area elimination.

Remember?

Remind me
to sign up tomorrow, okay?

That's a deal.

Watch this.

Far out, Jamie.

Lovely design, Mr. Ketchum.
Just a lovely design.

I really, really admire
the beach club.

It's too bad
that there are so few people

around here to appreciate it.

- Well, we do alright.
- Come on now, Mr. Ketchum.

You and I both know
the shape this place is in.

You've taken out three loans
in the past year.

Santa Corona's losing money.

That's a sign
of sloppy management.

Just what do you want,
Mr. Donalsen?

I thought
that would be quite obvious

Mr. Ketchum.

- I want the beach club.
- Oh, yes.

So you can draw in customers
for your gambling operations.

You have a magnificent flair
for slander.

I'd be careful with that
if I were you.

'A man like you could get sued.'

'No! No! What are you doing?'

Stop that! Stop that at once!

What are they doing?
That's my daughter's car!

Be glad it's not your daughter.

Quarter to 7:00,
we still got time

for a couple of quick games.

Hey, sounds good to me.

Alright.

- You go first.
- Yeah.

Hey, hey, how do you do that?

Just a knack.

Maybe you should go
professional, you know?

Whoa, 10,080.

Wow! Hey.

Jamie, check this out.

Oh, brother,
this place is getting too much.

Four big ones if you please,
little lady.

- Alright, you try.
- Okay.

Alright, kids,
it's seven o'clock.

It's about time
all you troublemakers went home.

Hey, you make plenty of money
from us.

How come you kick us out?

The old manager used to let us
stay as long as we wanted.

Oh, that's because
the old manager

had an IQ above moron level.

Ha-ha-ha.

Alright, what are you doing?

Oh, just checking to see
if you leave a trail.

'Howdy, Mr. Friedman.'

Oh, hello there, Mr. Morrissey.

- Back for more, huh?
- Oh.

Heck, yes. You know
how I do like my pinball.

Yeah. Well, good luck, huh?

Thank you.

Yes, sir, I just love pinball.

Oh, you have no idea

how much I've been
looking forward to this

to seeing you and Jamie

and to just plain
relaxing on the beach.

Well, we are glad
you finally decided

to take us up on the invite.

Where is Jamie, anyway?

She'll tell you herself
in a moment.

- Diana! Diana!
- Ah. Hey, Jamie.

Oh, Diana.
This is Kevin Wendell.

- Kevin, this is Diana Prince.
- Hi.

- Diana's a spy.
- A spy?

Uh, wait a second, Jamie. I'm
just a government investigator.

You know, real dull stuff.

Where'd she get that?

'Mom, guess what?'

I'm gonna enter
a skateboarding contest

at the Santa Corona Rink.

And if I win,
I get to go to San Francisco!

Whoa, young lady,
school's not even out yet.

Well, it'll be out tomorrow.

And the eliminations
are on Friday.

Well, if you're gonna compete,
then you've to practice, right?

Now, why don't you guys show me
a couple of stunts?

I hear you're pretty good.

Good? She's terrific!

- Oh, Kevin.
- "Oh, Kevin."

'By the way,
what was the take this week?'

'Three-hundred thousand.'

'Think it's kind of slow.'

Only trouble is,
Santa Corona can't compete

with Vegas or Reno, not yet.

There's not enough,
uh, night life

let alone any day life,
for that matter.

Well, now don't worry about that
because we have got

Ketchum's beach club
in our pocket.

What I'm interested in now
is something in the order

of a convention center.

You got something in mind?

I do have a thing or two
in mind, Mr. Friedman.

Yes, I do.

'It's alright. It's cool.'

I-I'm fine. I'm fine.
Really, I am. Thank you.

- 'Oh.'
- Diana?

Diana, how are you?

- I'm Skyler Markham.
- Oh!

We worked on that case
about a year ago in Los Angeles.

Sure. Uh, did you see that?

Thank you.

Yeah, lucky man,
have to have eyes

in the back of your head
these days.

Oh, yeah. Hey, how you doing?

I-I'm fine, couldn't be better.

I'm off the police force,
you know?

Now I'm a freelance
security consultant.

- Well, congratulations.
- Why, thank you.

How about you? What are you
doing here in Santa Corona?

I'm just here on a vacation.

It's the first one
in about a year.

- We should get together soon.
- Okay.

I have to go see a client
right now.

But, uh,
how about lunch tomorrow?

- Okay.
- Okay.

I'll, uh, meet you
at the Pacifica Lounge at noon.

Now, it's right down there
at the beach. Okay?

- Great, Skye, nice to see you.
- Nice to see you.

Someone better do something
about the crazy drivers

in this town
before someone gets hurt.

If anyone can do something
about it, you can.

Frankly, your threats
are getting tedious.

John, does that mean
that you're considering my offer

to buy these deserted
storefronts from you?

I intend to renovate them
to preserve

a part of Santa Corona's past.

I won't see them torn down
for some

antiseptic convention center

just as I won't see you
turn Santa Corona

into another Atlantic City.

John,
you really seem rather upset

about this near-accident.

You know, maybe you and I better
discuss this another time.

But please be careful because
you never know about accidents.

Take care.

Mr. Key is gonna be stubborn
about this.

Do you know the gray building
in the middle of the storefronts

that are so dear to his heart?

It's a real fire hazard,
that building.

Well..

Perhaps Mr. Key will

reconsider my offer

once that property
is beyond renovation.

- Yes.
- 'Mr. Donalsen.'

'May I see you for a minute
in private?'

Come in.

We seem to have a problem.

Her name is Diana Prince.

Well, do you think
that the Prince woman

is investigating us?

I don't know,
she says she's on vacation.

But just between you and me,
she doesn't seem the type

that's ever on vacation.

You know, maybe she's the reason
why our little bonfire..

...just fizzled.

Could be.

You know, I don't know
how that fire went out.

But fortunately,
the police don't know

who started it, huh?

I'll just have our men
take care of her.

No, Evan, not just yet.

'We really don't know
if she's actually'

'looking into our operations.'

I've arranged to have lunch
with her tomorrow.

I'll try and find out more then,
okay?

You'd better because the last
thing we need on our back

is the IADC.

Right.

- Mr. Morrissey.
- Hm.

I'm afraid that your, uh

credit has just reached
its limits.

That'll be your last round.

Well, hey, man,
I-I'm not doing that bad.

Yeah, well,
let's put it this way.

If this was a hospital
instead of a casino

you'd have just died
at the operating table.

Hey, listen now, Duane Morrissey
always pays his debts.

I'll just have my bank in Austin

wire me enough money
to cover this.

Yeah, you do that,
Mr. Morrissey.

Do that tomorrow morning,
but right now

you have to say goodbye.

Well, hold on, listen, see

I got this system and it works.

And I just need
a little more time.

A couple of more minutes.

That was a terrific lunch, Skye.

- Thank you.
- Uh, good.

You know, you can show
your gratitude by telling me

what you're really doing here
in Santa Corona.

I told you before,
it's just a vacation.

Oh, sure, sure, sure.

I suppose you were seduced

by our travel brochures.

Leisure capital
of the west, huh?

Well, actually,
I have a couple of friends here

and I thought
it would be a perfect place

to have a nice, quiet vacation.

But with all the weird goings-on
around here

I might have to revise
my estimate.

Uh, what do you mean?

Oh, well,
like that arson attempt

I read about in the paper.

Do you have any idea
why someone

would want to burn down
an empty building?

Oh, probably
just a couple of screwy kids.

Cheap thrills, you know?

Yeah, well, here I thought I'd
be getting away from all that.

You will, you will.

- Tell you what I'm gonna do?
- What?

I'll use all the pull I have
to make sure

that the rest of your stay
is as boring as possible.

I don't know about boring.
How about just uneventful?

Done.

- Do you mind?
- Sorry.

You're pretty good at that,
little lady.

Almost maybe good enough
to give me a run for my money.

How about trying a game,
say, a penny a point?

Oh, why don't you make it
a dollar a point

and I'll give you a break?

I won't make you pay up.

Oh, you're pretty cocky,
aren't you, little lady?

Alright, let's try.

You're on.

Hm. Let's see.

8200 minus 450.

At a dollar a point,
you would have owed me

$7750.

Even at a penny a point,
you'd be hurting.

How'd you get so good at this?

- Just a knack, I guess.
- Hey.

You got yourself
some kind of system, don't you?

For Pete's sakes!

I just memorize
the speed of the ships

calculate the time it takes
for a torpedo to intercept.

'Well, take into account
the speed of the torpedo'

and the drift of the sea mines
and fire. That's all.

- Uh, how much is 12 times 12?
- 144.

- 12 times 19?
- 228.

- 19 times 36?
- 684.

H-how many ships
were on the screen

of the game we just played?

Sixty two.

How many did I sink?

- Seven.
- Phew.

You got yourself one of them
photographic memories.

Don't you? I mean, you're-you're
a, what do you call it?

Um, a lightning calculator.

Well, it's just something I do.

I-I never gave it
that much thought.

You know something, sweetheart?

You remind me so much
of my daughter.

- Poor thing.
- Well, thanks a lot.

'What I mean to say is'

well, she's in
for some hard times

unless I could..

Well, hey, maybe you
with that memory of yours

could.. Maybe you could..

Nah.

What?

Well, maybe you could

with that wondrous
God-given talent you've got

right a terrible wrong
that's been done.

You think you'd be,
you could be so kind

'so merciful
as to do that thing?'

Sure. I guess.

Bless you, child. Bless you.

I hate to admit it, Evan

but that girl's here
on assignment.

I'd stake my reputation on it.

In that case,
I think we better arrange

a permanent vacation
for the lady..

'...as soon as possible.'

- Hi.
- Hi.

Now, tell the truth.

Wouldn't you rather be out
splashing around

in the blue Pacific than sitting
here with a dull, dry book?

- Well, no, not really.
- Sure, she would.

Come on, Jeff. Let's help
the little lady save herself.

Hey, no, wait a second.
My glasses.

Go with the flow, baby.
Come on.

Oh.

Ah, ah, ah!

Now listen, a joke's a joke.

But aren't we getting in
a little deep?

Not as deep
as we're going to get, lady.

Ah..

Talk. Who told you
to kill Diana Prince?

Donalsen. Evan Donalsen.

- Why?
- Don't know.

You don't ask questions.

- Are you Mr. Key?
- Yes, I'm John Edward Key.

I'm on the city council.

The police phoned me right
after you filed your complaint

against the two men
who tried to drown you.

Key. You're the one whose
building was set on fire, right?

Yes. I'd like to talk to you
about that.

I believe,
the man responsible for that

was behind the attempt
on your life.

Evan Donalsen.

I think
we'd both best keep on the move.

Uh, Donalsen
is an elusive and dangerous man.

His threats are implicit

his actions are not.

There are rumors
that he has all sorts

of illegal gambling operations
around town

but so far we haven't a shred
of hard evidence against him.

Unfortunately, what Wonder Woman
got from those two hoods

isn't considered hard evidence.

Testimony by magic lasso isn't
exactly admissible in court.

Well, at least we know
that Donalsen is behind it.

And, obviously, he knows
that you're with the IADC.

Maybe he sees you
as some kind of threat.

Now, Ms. Prince,
if something isn't done

Donalsen is going to buy
Santa Corona

right out from under us

and turn it into another nest

of criminals and gamblers.

'Now, we need your expertise.'

And insomuch as you already
seem to be one of his targets..

What can I lose
by helping out, right?

Right.

Well, so much for this vacation.

Maybe I can call my boss
at the IADC

and he can give us a little
information on Mr. Donalsen.

- Thank you.
- You're welcome.

We can call from my office.
It's not far.

The object of blackjack
is to get as close to 21 points

without exceeding it.

Kings, queens, jacks and tens

all count for ten points.

All other cards are face value,
except for the ace--

Whoo-wee! You sure do have
one heck of a memory, gal.

We should get that money back
in no time at all.

And I shouldn't have
too much trouble getting you in

as mature as you are
and what with

wearing the clothes
I'm gonna get you.

Shoot, you could probably pass
for 22, 23.

Where is this place, anyway?

You'll know that soon enough,
honey.

You know,
I'm taking a mighty big chance

just sneaking you in.

But it's either that
or a slow ride

down the Pecos River.

Okay, but remember,
two hours and that's it.

If these guys really are crooks

who gypped you out
of your daughter's trust fund..

Cross my heart.

Well, then I guess it's okay
to hustle the money back.

But I have to be home by 11:00
or mom will have a fit.

Don't you worry your pretty,
little head about that, honey.

Two hours should just about be
all it should take.

'Donalsen's done
this sort of thing before'

in other cities
only on a smaller scale.

You know, he'll come in
and buy a nightclub or a hotel

'and lay the foundation
for his illegal activities.'

Where does he get the funds?

'Syndicate money, mostly.'

Yeah, that's what makes it
so difficult.

With the mob backing him,
he can cover his tracks

before we can make a move.

And since the mob is involved

we are involved, Diana.

- Which means..
- I know, I know.

So much for my vacation.

Any idea what Donalsen's
next move will be?

Well, seeing as he's already
gained control of an arcade

a nightclub and a dinner theater

Ira believes he'll try for
some kind of recreation center

'to draw wealthy clientele.'

Well, there's the, uh,
Santa Corona Beach Club.

It's not doing too well.

Howard Ketchum might be
persuaded to sell out to him.

That's our lead then, Steve.
Thanks for the information.

Oh, any time, Diana.

Oh, and about your vacation

'I'm sorry.'

You are?

Bye.

Oh, they finally got here,
did they?

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Well, they took
their own sweet time.

- What's that?
- Oh.

Some books
I ordered from back east.

I thought they'd never get here.

Hold it.

That was a private
delivery service, wasn't it?

Yes.

Well, then why is there postage
on this package?

Let's get out of here.

To think I could have gone
to Lake Tahoe instead.

Well, uh, Donalsen must be
pretty desperate planting a bomb

in a public building like that.

Oh, I have the feeling
it's not gonna be too safe

being around
either one of us for a..

Oh, no.

What?

I'm sorry I had to move out.

Believe me,
I wouldn't have done it

if it weren't for your own good.

- But who is it who's after you?
- 'I can't tell you that.'

You see, the more you know,
the greater danger you'll be in.

- We'll miss you, Diana.
- 'I'll miss you, too, Jamie.'

Now, if either of you need me,
really need me

I will be at the Beachside Motel
near the Coast Highway, okay?

But call me.
Don't come in person.

- Okay.
- Okay, bye.

- Bye, Diana.
- I love you both.

I'm sure you'll find
everything in order.

Mr. Donalsen is very good

when it comes to contracts.

Give me a minute,
will you, please?

It's not every day
a man sells something

it took him 20 years to build.

I said no interruptions,
Ms. Horn.

My name, Mr. Ketchum,
is Diana Prince.

I'm with the IADC.

I-I said no interruptions.

No exceptions.

If I have to,
I will have you subpoenaed.

Well, then I suggest
you do so, Ms. Prince.

'Good afternoon.'

Tell Mr. Ketchum I will be back.

Afternoon, Mr. Ketchum.

Diana Prince had
a little trouble reaching you

so she asked me
to keep her appointment.

What are you doing in here?

This is a private office.
Get out at once!

Not until we have a little chat.

I don't chat with intruders.

Alright.

Well, what did you want
to talk about?

Evan Donalsen.

- I'd rather not discuss it.
- He's gotten to you already?

No-no one has gotten to me.
Y-you didn't hear me say that.

Mr. Ketchum,
unless someone stands up

to this man,
he'll have your whole town

'bought before you know
what's happened.'

'I don't know
what you're talking about.'

I think you do.

You, I take it,
work for Donalsen.

She grabs me, Ketchum,
your family's dead.

Wonder Woman, please, don't.

Call her off, Ketchum.

- I can't let him go.
- You have to.

'If I don't play along
with them'

'if I don't sell them
my beach club'

'my wife, my daughter
will be in a terrible danger.'

Alright. Why don't you crawl
back under your rock and leave?

Next time we meet,
it'll be on neutral ground.

There are no neutral grounds,
lady.

Phew!

Wow.

- I feel like a jerk.
- Nonsense.

You look like one of them
pretty ladies on TV.

Well, I don't think
Farrah Fawcett

is losing any sleep.

Now, remember,
all you've gotta do

is remember what cards
are still left in the deck

and then compute the odds
on whether or not

I should take another card,
okay?

Well, I understand.
But what are we doing here?

Watch.

Well, far out.

Ma'am..

Here you go, Mr. Friedman,
that ought to cover

that little debt I owe you.

So it does.
Well, enjoy your evening.

I, uh, hope you have
a little better luck, huh?

Thank you.

- Where did you get the money?
- Got it from a loan shark.

Two-hundred percent interest,
but it's all gonna be worth it

because tonight
I'm gonna win it all back

and then some.

Hit me.

Twenty one. You beat that.

Duane, can't we leave now?

Leave now? We just got here.

Look, just a couple
of more hands.

See, I wanna see the look
on Friedman's face

when I break his bank.

She lead some kind
of a charmed existence or what?

No, she doesn't lead
a charmed existence at all.

She just happens to be
a very, very good agent.

I've seen her in operation.

She's resourceful
and tenacious.

And it's gonna take more than a
couple of hoods to put her away.

Hm. Perhaps you're right.

Perhaps

someone should do the job,
that she trusts.

Oh, now wait a minute, Evan.

When I took this job, you didn't
say anything about murder.

Well, that, that was just
an oversight on my part.

That's all.

I hired you

as my security consultant.

Now, why don't you start
making me feel secure?

I'm sitting this one out. I have
to go to the ladies' room.

Oh, sure, sure, honey.
You go ahead.

Look, just don't bet more
than a $100 while I'm gone.

Hey, don't worry about me now.
I'm an old hand at this.

I know what I'm doing.
Go ahead.

Hey, my man,
what do you say we do it

the way we do it in Texas?

Double or nothing?

If you take a look
at her dossier

you'll realize
that she's deep in debt..

Who was that?

I didn't get a good look at her.

But whoever she was,
she sure got an eyeful.

Yeah.

What happened?
Where are all your winnings?

It's not as bad as it looks,
we still got a few chips left

and we can build up again
what we lost.

- It won't take that long.
- It's after midnight.

I'm not gonna stay here
for another five hours.

Duane, how could you do this?

What are you gonna tell
your daughter?

What daughter?

Oh, my daughter.

You creep.

You lousy creep!

Wait a minute, there's no reason
to talk like that.

I'm going home, and as for you

you know where you can go,
turkey.

That's the girl
that was in the office.

She came with that hick,
Morrissey.

Well, that means the rhinestone
cowboy won't leave

until we find out
where she lives. Go.

Hello?

Oh, hi, Skye.

No, I had to get up to answer
the phone anyway. Ha-ha.

Yes, I know it's an old joke.

But what do you expect
at one o'clock in the morning?

Well, sure, Skye,
if it's important.

Come on over. I'll be dressed
in a couple of minutes.

Okay?

Bye.

Oh..

Just a second.

Jamie, what are you doing here?
Come on in.

What's that dress
you're wearing, anyway?

- Where have you been?
- Oh. Would you believe?

Watching this guy play blackjack
for five and a half hours.

- What?
- Oh.

It was a stupid thing to do,
Diana

but I was helping this guy

'cause he lost all his money
to this casino.

Casino? Where?

Oh, you're never gonna
believe this

but there's a casino
in the back

of that electronic arcade
near the beach.

What a weird place for a casino.

Come on, we're going
to the police station.

- Put this jacket on.
- Oh, and I knew it.

Now I'm gonna get seven to ten
in the state slammer, right?

No, you're going to be
a heroine.

Oh, Skye, hey.

I'm sorry, I forgot.

Listen, uh,
we'll have to make that meeting

some other time, okay?

Why, what's up?

Well, I think we have

the evidence we need to convict

Evan Donalsen.

- You have?
- Yup.

There's a casino
in the rear of the arcade.

Diana, I-I really think
I should call my mother.

We'll call her from the police
station while we're waiting

for the search warrant, okay?

I'll see you tomorrow, Skye.

Uh, sure, Diana.

I really don't know what
you think you're looking for

gentlemen and ladies

but it's your warrant.

The door to the casino
was right there.

That door goes
to the storage room. That's all.

Do you mind, Mr. Friedman?

No, come on.

You satisfied?

But it was here. I'm positive.

The casino was right here.

If this kid does have
a photographic memory

she'll have a complete map
of our operations in her head.

I put some feelers out. Uh..

She's entered
into a skateboarding contest

down at the Santa Corona Rink.

Then grab her after the contest.

As for the Prince job, I want
you to finish it immediately.

Alright, alright.
You don't have to tell me twice.

That's true,
I've told you that before

and I'm not gonna
tell you that again.

I can't understand it.

How could Donalsen have known
what we were going to do

when the only people
who knew about it

were you, me and Jamie?

Maybe he bribed the judge
who gave us the warrant.

I wouldn't put anything
past him.

- Yes, Ms. Steele.
- 'Skyler Markham.'

- 'Calling for Ms. Prince.'
- It's for you. Skyler Markham?

Of course. Oh, Diana,
how could you be so dumb?

What is it?

Skyler Markham arrived

just as Jamie and I
were leaving.

I told him I'd found something
on Donalsen

and I mentioned the arcade.

Then he might be our man.

- Oh, yes.
- Shall I put him on?

Absolutely.

Hello, Skye.

'Hey, sorry about last night.'

'I still would like to see you,
it's really urgent.'

Well, if you think
it's that important

why not meet me back at my hotel
at, say, in a half an hour?

'Okay, you're on.'

Okay, fine.

I'll see you then.

- 'Bye.'
- Bye.

Diana...now you will call

the police, won't you?

Oh, I can take care of myself.

And besides, if I need help

I have a friend that I can
call on for assistance.

You know how many times
in my life

I've ever done a handstand?
Once.

Just think. You're about
to have done it twice.

Oh.

'Next is contestant number nine,
Jamie O'Neill.'

- Good luck.
- Thanks.

The kid's good, isn't she?

Yeah, Jamie!

Yeah.

'Next is contestant 24,
Tommy Fox.'

Yeah, Jamie. That's it.

As soon as this thing is over

pull her away
for a photo session.

I'll be in the parking lot
with the car.

I knew you were a criminal.
But a peeping Tom, too?

Have you no shame, Mr. Markham?
Alright, speak up.

'Did Donalsen send you here
to kill Diana Prince?'

Yeah, uh..

Alright, what else
is Donalsen up to?

- He's gonna nab the kid.
- Jamie?

He's got to find out
how much she knows.

Donalsen sent some men
to the skateboard rink.

Alright,
stick your hands through.

Now that should hold you
until the police come.

'And the winner in freestyle,
Jamie O'Neill.'

Hi, I'm Harris
with "The Register."

Can I get a few shots of you
on your board?

- Here?
- It is a bit crowded.

We could go around the building
in the parking lot.

- The surface is much smoother.
- Okay.

Oh, thanks.

Did a good job.

So what would you
like me to do?

Handstands, Christies,
whatever you like.

No, I'd like you
to step right into this car.

You're not gonna believe this,
but there's some broad

on a skateboard
coming after us.

And she's gaining.

- Are you alright?
- I'm fine.

Wow, they ought to give you
an award, Wonder Woman.

Isn't it beautiful?

It's beautiful.

Lovely, honey.

Are you all ready
for the finals in San Francisco?

Well, we just booked
Mr. Donalsen

on every count you can name
and then some.

All thanks to you, Jamie.

That map you memorized led us

to every one of his casinos.

Oh, any time.

Well, you'd better dig in
before it's all gone, John.

Now don't worry, Diana,
I brought two more large pizzas.

I hope everyone likes
anchovies and pepperoni.

I love anchovies.

Diana!

- I can't watch.
- Uh..

Oh..

Oh..
