Wicked Tuna (2012–…): Season 4, Episode 1 - First Blood - full transcript

It's the first day of the new bluefin tuna fishing season in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and every captain in the fleet wants to land the coveted first tuna of the year. Who will strike it lucky and who will strike out in the openi...

NARRATOR: For almost 400 years,
the men of Gloucester,
Massachusetts

have battled each
other at sea...

PAUL:
Yeah! Woo!

NARRATOR:
...to make a living.

TYLER:
Every tuna's got my name on it.

NARRATOR: Now comes
their most competitive season
ever.

SANDRO: Aw!
NARRATOR: More conflict.

TYLER:
Get out of my way.

GREG:
Let's go!

NARRATOR:
Bitter rivalries.

DAVE: Stay the [BLEEP] away from
my boat. Do you understand?

NARRATOR:
Bigger risks.

DAVE:
I don't like this.

PAUL: Ah!
NARRATOR: All to earn a
paycheck.

TRAVIS:
Woo-hoo!

HOLLYWOOD: He's a beast! Bingo!
All: Whoo!

NARRATOR: When one fish
can be worth over $20,000.

HOLLYWOOD:
Yeah, baby!

TJ: Papow!
DAVE: Wow!

NARRATOR: It's all-out war.
PAUL: Good shot!

NARRATOR: Fishing season kicks
off right now on Wicked Tuna.

NARRATOR:
Last season, fishing vessel Tuna
.Com

out-fished the
fleet by a landslide

and previous champion Pin Wheel
finished in last place

with only three fish.

But on opening day
of the new season...

It's a clean slate
for all the boats.

[BAGPIPE PLAYING]

DAVE:
Here we go.

SANDRO:
Rock and roll, baby.

DAVE: First fish?
SANDRO: Yes, sir.

DAVE: Day one, everybody wants
to get to the fishing grounds a
quick as possible

and everybody wants to catch
that very first fish to make a
statement.

DAVE: Some guys say I'm the most
competitive guy in the fleet.

DAVE: You now what?
Yes, absolutely.

Woo! Yeah!

DAVE:
Last year we smoked the entire
fleet

and my goal this year
is the same as last year.

To do it again.

What are we gonna do different
this year from last year?

BOTH:
Nothing.

SANDRO:
Just keep dominating.

DAVID: Let's get it on.
TRAVIS: Let's go!

TYLER: Gotta get out
and be the first boat to catch
fish.

TYLER: Any boat in the fleet
could be the first one to put a
fish on their deck.

But this season,
it's gonna be me.

I was humbled last season
by only catching three fish.

Maybe the tuna gods are trying
to teach me a little lesson.

I finished out in last place
and financially I got crushed.

DAVID:
Woo-hoo!

I'm fishing against some of the
best fishermen on the east coast
this year.

But at the end,
I wanna be the number one dog in
town.

TIM: Here we go.
JARRETT: Ya-yah.

TJ:
The last two seasons the Hot
Tuna

definitely hasn't performed
the way that we used to in years
past.

TIM: This fishing's terrible.
TJ: I know.

It's the worst ever seen. I've
never seen anything like this in
20 years.

It sucks.

MIKE: Easy.

TJ: I made the decision to bring
my younger brother Michael
onboard.

The way these last couple
seasons have gone for the Hot
Tuna,

We need the extra help.

JARRETT:
What do you think, Michael?

You ready?

I'm ready, brother.

TJ: Everyone in the fleet knows
that the start of the season

that one of Dot Com's main goals
is to catch that first fish

and we'd love to spoil that.

Ain't gonna happen.
Good luck, boys.

DAVE:
Let the games begin.

All clear.

DAVE: Every season,
I think the real competitive
boats

write us off as
a non-competitor.

My boat's not the biggest, the
fanciest, the fastest in the
fleet.

That doesn't really
bother me much.

My goal in life is
to support my family.

Guys, look at the Hard Merch
as the ugly duckling in the
fleet.

I look at this boat
like a hardworking, tough going

and fishing [BLEEP] boat!

It's crucial with
such a short season

to really make the right
decision that first day of
fishing.

We're gonna go to the
religious grounds.

JOE: All right.
We're gonna the religious
grounds.

DAVE: We all have a list
of favorite fishing spots

and really,
there's only one way to get
those.

Well, actually there's two.

You can steal them from somebody
or you can do it like I did.

Spent a lot of time out there
fishing and looking.

JASON: Should we pray before
or when we get there?

DAVE:
Both.

We don't just throw darts
at the chart and say, "Let's go
here."

We usually go where we've been
in years past.

Fish are creatures of habit.

Most likely the fish are gonna
show up at the same place at the
same time.

So I know where I'm gonna go
fishing right now.

DAVE: Last year we caught the
first fish of the season on
Stellwagen

and this year we're
hoping to do it again.

All right, let it go.

Okay.

We're gonna jump the hurdle.

Anchor's away.

SANDRO:
And so it begins.

DAVE:
Paul, he's gonna be a thorn in
our side.

Yeah, baby.

PAUL:
This year I got a new boat.

I got two new mates.

KENNY:
We're gonna put blood on the
deck today,

Oh, yeah, we're gonna get one
over here, watch.

MAURO: The one with the bull's
-eye on it this year.

PAUL: Dave and Sandro,
they smoked everybody last year.

So now, everybody in the fleet
wants to bring them down a
level.

We both caught fish
previously at the same spot.

I'll be damned if he's
gonna get one before me.

All right, Mauro.

MAURO: Ready, boss?
PAUL: Yep.

MAURO:
Anchor's away!

Grab me a herring, Trav.

Putting them out here, dude.

Got a lot of ground to make up
for after last year.

TYLER: This year it's super
important to me to get the firs
fish

and get the ball rolling
in the right direction.

Momentum is everything.

DAVID:
There's another one! See you
later.

TYLER:
The last couple years,

I've been fishing with people
that have been more my friends

than have been fishermen.

This year I got fishermen
coming on my boat, David and
Travis.

And I think between the three o
us, we got a solid team

and we're gonna do some damage.

DAVID:
We're gonna kill it.

DAVE:
Big pile of bait going through.

Sometimes the fish shows up with
the bait so we'll just have to
see here.

See one we got right one,
right on the outside.

DAVE: Marking a fish on your
screen, that means you've done
things right.

You've put the boat in the right
spot and the right depth,

you got fish under the boat,

there's nothing more you could
ask for right now other than a
bite.

That's a tuna just checking out
the sinker, just seeing what it
is.

Definitely looking at it.

And there's the
bait right there.

Keep an eye on it.

DAVE: There's a fish!
JASON: Yeah?

DAVE: Streaking down.
JASON: Come on.

DAVE:
All right, look at this. See?

See how he's going up and down?

It looks like multiple fish
and it's actually the same fish.

I think you got him in the chum!

DAVE:
Chum is simply cut up baitfish.

We use this to attract tunas

as it holds them there,
up under the boat.

It gives us a longer period
of time to get one on the hook.

JASON:
Come on.

TJ:
It's a matter of time before ou
shot.

SANRO:
110 to 140.

Three fish, boom, boom, boom.

PAUL:
Wow.

DAVID:
I'm marking right now?

TIM: Oh, boy!
SANDRO: Wait for it.

DAVE: Wait for it, yeah.

JARRETT: Here it comes.
SANDRO: Wait for it.

PAUL: Oh, here we go!
KENNY: There he is. There he is!

PAUL: Hold on.
MAURO: There he is.

PAUL: Yeah, that's him!
SANDRO: Come on, Mauro.

MAURO:
Turn the boat that way yeah?
That a boy.

All right, that's good.

PAUL: Get the lines in.
Mauro: Yep.

PAUL:
Just backing away from the
anchor.

MAURO: It's pulling us right now

PAUL:
Yeah, I'm coming back.

PAUL:
I wanna get away from the
anchor.

MAURO:
You got it, buddy.

Feels good. We're just gonna
keep steady pressure on him
right now.

Getting the lines in.
Getting away from our anchor
ball.

DAVE:
Oh, Paul's hooked up.

He just went sideways.

SANDRO:
[BLEEP]!

DAVE:
They're moving.

Nice fish. This one feels big.

Look at him go. Ah, yeah.

Woo! There's a biggie.

PAUL:
Feels like a 400-500 pounder.

MAURO: It's the first day.
We really need this fish.

I can taste it!

KENNY:
We'll know more in a little
while!

TJ: Something's on
the far floater.

TIM:
Yeah, we're on! We're on!

TJ: We got our first bite of the
season. Rod's lapped over.
Line's going out.

It's huge right now
that we land this fish.

Come on, Jarrett,
that's what we're here for,
baby!

TJ: Catching the first
fish of the season,

it answers a lot of questions
in your mind.

Am I doing the right thing?
Am I putting the baits at the
right depth?

Am I in the right spot?

TJ: One rod bend, one fish on
board answers all those
questions.

TIM:
It's coming up high and fast.

DAVID:
We got three coming in right
now!

We got them at 10 fats right on
that bait. Right on that...

Right on the port side!
Right on the port side, dude.

TYLER: Woo-hoo!
TRAVIS: [INAUDIBLE].

TYLER:
[BLEEP]!

DAVID: Hey, hey, hey!
TRAVIS: Turn us on! Turn us on!

TYLER:
Yee-hoo! Well, it's a Bluefin!

Dude, it's heavy!

DAVID:
Get them on. Go get the anchor!

Get the other lines in.

TYLER:
See ya later!

Holy [BLEEP]!

DAVID:
Tyler!

TYLER: I'm going! I'm going!
You getting smoked?

DAVID: I'm not like Tyler's
mates from the previous seasons

I'm older and I have
a family to feed.

I have a wife and two kids
that I can't let down.

This one's screaming.

DAVID:
We need this fish.

DAVID: Let's go get him.
TYLER: Let's go get him!

It's a tuna fish!

TYLER:
Woo-hoo-hoo!

DAVID: It's a tuna fish!
TYLER: Woo-hoo.

DAVID:
Travis, you ready in a minute?

TRAVIS:
Yeah, whenever you are, man.

Go. You're up.

DAVID: I'd say it's a real one.
What do you think?

It's a big one. It's a big fish.

This one's gonna be a battle.

He's fighting for his life
but you want it more. Come on.

TYLER:
A lot riding on this fish.

This will send a strong message
to the rest of the fleet.

Going back to what I did the
first year and that's just fish.

TRAVIS:
Right on top, Tyler.

TYLER:
Wow! Screamer.

Taking line. Don't
wanna horse him.

TYLER:
Woo-hoo!

Really nervous here
fighting these fish.

This is a big fish
it's gotta be 500-600 pounds.

Wait, head shakes,
head shakes, head shakes!

Easy, easy, easy. He's just head
shaking. He's tail wrapped.

He's tail wrapped. He is tail
wrapped. He is tail wrapped
okay?

This fish is all over
the place on top.

He's definitely tail wrapped,
and this is very scary

because he could definitely
break the line with his tail.

And this is not
gonna be pleasant.

Put your boots on. Put
the drag brakes on.

This definitely is gonna be
an early season test.

There you go.

TIM:
Think he's gonna come up fast
here.

That a boy, Jarrett. Come on.

It's a shark.

Yeah, it's a shark.

Shark, he's right over
here. It's a shark.

Blue shark.

Jesus.

That's not good.

JARRETT: Ah.
TIM: There you go, all right.

Stop right there.

Oh, well.

Nothing you can do about that.
Hopefully, we'll get another
one.

Another tuna, not another shark,
but what are you gonna do?

Take my pills
that's what I'll do.

Keep my heart happy.
Right now I need it.

MAURO: He's up top.

He's pulling.
He's pulling us backwards right
now.

KENN:
We're just along for the ride.

Nice head shakes. Strong fish.
Definitely a worthy opponent.

It's a big fish, yeah.
It's a good-size fish.

Hundred incher.
He's fighting like a hundred
incher.

Nice bend on that rod too.

Nice fish coming up.
Coming up a little.

PAUL:
Hopefully, we get lucky and get
him.

KENNY:
Hell yeah, Mauro.

-Dude, kicks ass right here.
[BLEEP]. KENNY: Sucks.

That was a good fish. [BLEEP].

PAUL:
This one hurts the worst.

It could've been the first one
of the year.

Damn it, I'm not gonna give up.

All right, let's go back to the
anchor. Come on. Pretty [BLEEP].

Part of the game.

ANDRO: Eat fish now.
DAVE: It's all right.

We always get them. Always.

This boat does not set up for
failure. It's set up for
success.

DAVE: I don't wanna end this day
without catching a fish.

I wanna strike, and I wanna
strike fast, and I wanna strike
now.

We'll get it done. We always do.

We've been fighting this fish
for over an hour.

There's a lot of pressure.

This fish is tail wrapped
and now it's a game of inches.

I'm just gonna
try and float him.

TRAVIS:
Don't wanna pop him off.

-Don't wanna break him off.
TYLER: Hey, don't. Shh!

-We'll get him.
TYLER: This is a 600-pound
bluefin.

Big mama, come to papa!

I want this one bad.

DAVID: Here he comes.
Coming up color. Here we go!

Give it.

Right on top.

Here we go, wow!

TYLER:
Big [BLEEP]! Holy [BLEEP]!

TRAVIS: Hit him! Hit him.
DAVID: He's going under the
boat.

He's under the
boat! Hit him quick.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

-We got him. We got him.
TYLER: Get a gaff!

Get a gaff! It's a big fish.

-Gaff him! Jesus Christ!
DAVID: Look out! Tail wrapped.

Enjoy your flight to Japan.

-Let's go Pin Wheel!
TYLER: Woo-hoo!

Ah, meat! Look at that jack.

DAVID: That was fish.
TYLER: Boom!

DAVID:
Dude, we got a fish.

TRAVIS:
I know. I'm stoked. First day,
man.

TYLER:
First line out, bang!

TYLER [ON RADIO]: Pretty
positive I got the first fish o
the season.

TIM:
It's the pooper scoop.

TYLER [ON RADIO]:
So we're off to a much better
start.

I got the first fish
of the season secure.

A lot of captains
are gonna be going, "Oh,
[BLEEP]."

PAUL:
It's on the radio.

MAURO: Really?
PAUL: Tyler's hungry.

He had a bad year last year.

He tasted being the champ.

So he has got nothing more to do
than to kick ass.

MAURO: Wait our turn.
KENNY: Yep.

PAUL:
This could be the new Tyler.

He's right out the
gate and running.

I'm gonna go cut some food up.

DAVE:
I wanted to be that first boat.

But you know what?
It's tuna fishing.

And I know I'm not nearly as
disappointed as Dave on the Dot
Com.

I bet his freaking eyeball
is twitching right out of his
head.

SANDRO: Oh, God.
DAVE: He did call everybody.

Recognition.
He wants acceptance from the
group.

You know how he can get
acceptance? If he just keeps hi
mouth shut.

DAVID: Not a bad first day at
all. Are we bringing this guy
in?

TYLER:
Yep. Bring him. Swing him in.

Last year, I had the worse
season ever. But this is an
incredible start.

We've gotten the first fish of
the season, and I'm stoked.

It looks like the tides are
changing for the Pin Wheel.

Whoo! Let him down.
Just drop it. Boom.

Look at this beautiful fish.

DAVID: What do you got for
measurement? TRAVIS: 93 inches.

DAVID: 93 inches!
TYLER: Yeah!

DAVID: Good job, brother.
TYLER: Just holy [BLEEP].

We ain't going anywhere, dude.
Look at the bait.

TYLER: Bro, if the bait's here,
the tuna's definitely here.

[GIGGLES]

SANDRO: Tyler's gonna be fishing
hard. Said he's gunning for us.

DAVE: He fished hard last year.
SANDRO: He did.

DAVE: It's not how many fish you
catch. It's how much money you
make.

SANDRO:
And I wanna make lots of it.

DAVE: We had a good--
SANDRO: But we gotta catch bait.

We can't catch bait.

Ah, you jerk.
I lost hold of the hook right
there.

SANDRO: Pulled a hook on a
mackerel. DAVE: No. No pulling
hooks.

Hopefully, that's
not signs to come.

DAVE:
If we don't get any bait on thi
boat,

there's really no way for us
to catch fish.

TYLER: We gotta go. We gotta lay
the pain. We just gotta keep it
rolling.

TRAVIS: Right over here, Tyler?
TYLER: Yeah, let's go up to
there.

Starting to see some fish here
at least. Nice marks, two of
them.

We really gotta catch another
fish. Put pressure on the other
boats.

DAVID: Come on.
TYLER: It's day two of the
season.

We got the first fish secured,
and we're looking for the
second.

Big marks, Dave. Go for it.
Both of you guys go for it.

Let it down. Let it
down. Let it down.

He's still there. He's at 24.

[REEL UNSPOOLING RAPIDLY]

DAVID:
Got him on! I got him on!

Got him on! He's going.

TYLER:
Let him roll. Let him roll.

Got him on! Whoo!

Got him on!

Dude, Dave, this could be,
like, a $5000 fish.

Great early season fish.

Grade A Boston bluefin,
and we got one on the line.

Come on, get some,
get some, get some.

DAVID:
Tyler, pay attention.

Whoa, turn, turn, turn.

[BLEEP] guy here's
trying to cut us off.

I've got a fish on.

DAVID:
[BLEEP] get out of here!

You gonna run me over?

What the [BLEEP]? I'm stretched!

Dude, I'm on the
top! I'm on top!

TYLER: [BLEEP] Dude, go away! Go
away. DAVID: What the [BLEEP]!

Reel, reel, reel!

Come on. Turn the handle.

He's moving away.

DAVID:
We're all clear.

What was up with that other boat
trying to run the fish over?

Hm.

Dude, it's a huge tuna fish.
It's what it's all about.

DAVID: That's right.
TYLER: [GIGGLES] come on.

Whoo!

Tiring. Very tiring.

TYLER: You want me to go?
-Yeah, man. You wanna take over?

Yeah, go for it.

DAVID: What? Right?
TYLER: Bring her right.

-Forward?
TYLER: Forward around the line.

Come on, David!
Learn how to drive the boat!

You a little rusty
or what? Jesus!

We got him blue.
We got him within 30 feet right
here.

This is the moment of truth.
You lose him, or you put him in
the boat.

Let's get this fish.
Let's get this fish right here.

We need this fish, big time.

TYLER:
All right, neutral.

-Fish come right here.
DAVID: Get him!

TYLER:
Clockwise Pin Wheel.

Back up, back up!
I got the swivel about to be on
the reel.

DAVID: Who's throwing?
TYLER: I am.

DAVID:
I'll get on it. Now I'll get on
the reel.

-Coming right up, Tyler.
TYLER: Hit him.

-Got him.
TYLER: Got them!

-Tail wrap! Tail wrap.
DAVID: Tail gaff! Tail gaff!

TYLER:
Two fish, ba-boom! Whoo!

DAVID: Yes, ah!
TYLER: Pin Wheel, baby!

-Oh, man, dude. Trav got him.
DAVID: I don't know what to say!

We got two fish onboard,

and we're gonna have to keep
working and put number three on
the deck.

DAVID: Beautiful fish. Nice.
TYLER: It is a nice fish, dude.

Hell yeah!

Let's get back on the ball,
and get another one.

DAVID:
All right. Sounds good. Let's
go.

TYLER: Let's get this season
started. DAVID: That's right,
man.

TYLER: Dot Com can kiss my ass
this season, bro.

TJ [ON RADIO]:
You got lines out, chief?

DAVE:
Yes. Just come down the
portside.

TJ [ON RADIO]: Port?
DAVE: Yep.

Pulling up to Dave
on the Dot Com.

See what he sees.

He's hungry. He's
a good fisherman.

We like Dave, but we know it's
about time that somebody takes
him out so...

DAVE: What's up, Mikey? You're
back, huh? MIKE: I'm back, baby.

DAVE: how many years you been
gone? MIKE: At least five.

DAVE: Welcome back. Yep.
MIKE: Thanks, brother. How are
you?

DAVE:
That freaking Tyler's on fire,
huh?

TJ: On fire.
MIKE: Yeah. Yeah. It looks that
way.

TJ: Coming out real hot, buddy.
DAVE: Right? We gotta put it
out.

TJ: That won't last long.
He's the dog right now. We're
the hydrant.

DAVE: Yeah. Yeah, no doubt.
TJ: We're gonna get him.

DAVE: All right. We're gonna
stay. It's supposed to blow,
like, 35 tonight.

It's gonna be rough.

TJ: We gotta take chances.
MIKE: Yup.

TJ: We're smoked by the pinhead.
We gotta stay out.

DAVE: We'll get back up. I'm not
worried. TIM: Nah, definitely
not.

TJ:
Dave's saying he's not worried,

but I can tell by the way he's
speaking, he's worried.

DAVE: See you later.
MIKE: Good start.

TJ: All right.
DAVE: Good luck.

MIKE: Good luck.
TIM: Good luck. Thanks, Dave.

DAVE CARRARO:
See ya, Reba!

MIKE OTT: We gotta
smoke that guy.

DAVE: We're just getting started
here. We're set up on the
anchor.

We got here an hour
before sunrise.

We saw a ton of bait.
I like what I'm seeing.

JASON: You're gonna
have to clean out for a sec.

JOE:
Yeah. While I get my [BLEEP] on.

DAVE: Now let's hope
we can get several bites today.

That's the only way we're gonna
catch the rat kid from New
Hampshire. Tyler.

He got on a little tear
and we need our lucky day

where we can get a little tear
and get a few in a row.

Right now at least out
of the starting gate

this is some of the fastest
fishing we've seen in a long
time.

[LIGHT CLICKING SOUND]

[LIGHT CLICKING SOUND]

JOE:
Jay, something...

JASON:
We're on. We're on!

JOE: Here we go. Here we go.
DAVE: We're on.

JOE: Pull that forward.
JASON: Take us off the ball.

DAVE: Keep cranking, Joe,
you're doing good.

JOE MARCIANO:
Come on, big [BLEEP] tuna.

JASON:
He's there. That's a tuna.

DAVE: We didn't mark it
but we got a fish on the rod.

We got our Cinderella bite.
Now we just got to get it in the
boat.

JASON:
He's there. That's a tuna.

DAVE:
Stay on it. Don't lose him.

JASON:
Oh, my God. He's going under the
boat.

DAVE:
Reel on it. Reel on it. Go
ahead.

Okay, we're on, boys.
That a way to do it.

JOE:
Here we go.

JOE:
Hey, I think something's wrong.

DAVE: What?
JOE: This drag is acting weird.

DAVE: Here, Joe, I'll spell you
while you get your gloves on.

[BLEEP] What is that [BLEEP]?

What is it?

DAVE:
Porbeagle.

JASON: Should I dart it?
DAVE: Ah, no.

JASON: Tail-strap it?
DAVE: Eh, tail-strap that, man.

DAVE:
Well, it turns out just like
Cinderella.

This bite was nothing
but a fairytale.

DAVE: These things.
Pain in my ass is what it is.

They're good eating.
We'll get a few steaks out of
him.

No money though
but at least we'll have
something to eat.

JASON:
We just gotta stay positive.

SANDRO:
Ah, missing a key factor. Tuna.

DAVE CARRARO:
We've been out now for several
days.

We haven't caught a fish.

We need to get things going
and we need to get it going now.

DAVE:
Look at this. There they are!

SANDRO: We don't look at what w
did last year. That money is
gone. Right now.

We gotta look at
what we're doing this year.

A lot of fishermen wanna see me
take a fall and fall hard

but I have no intentions
of letting that happen.

TYLER:
Yo, we're marking a nice one!

No one else has caught a fish
yet but we got two fish on board

and we're up early today
looking for number three.

TYLER:
He's a 500 pounder.

Look at him.
Straight down on the bait dude.

Nice freaking mark here, man.

Unbelievable.

He came right up on
this [BLEEP] down rod dude.

Damn, man.

There's fish around.

TYLER:
Any minute, get ready.

SANDRO:
We're on.

Let's go. We're on.

DAVE:
Told you we'd get them!

SANDRO: We're on. Come on.
We gotta get one.

TYLER: It's right there!
DAVID: There he is.

TYLER: We're on. We're on!
DAVID: We got him on. Got him
on.

DAVID:
There he is. There he is!

Travis, get the other.
TYLER: Let the line... No.

TYLER: Put the drag down.
Get the drag down. Let the rod
line go!

DAVE:
Back the drag off.

DAVE:
This is a blue dog. I'm pretty
sure.

Shark [BLEEP].

TYLER:
Dave, is that a tuna fish?

DAVID:
I don't know. Is it a shark or a
fish?

TYLER:
Might be a shark.

Even when we're tuna fishing,
we're actually shark fishing as
well.

We have as just a good of a
chance of hooking a tuna as we
do a shark.

And we can't control
what eats our baited lines.

DAVID:
Reel like a [BLEEP].

TRAVIS:
Come on, Dave!

TYLER: Whoo, come on.
Let's get this and figure out
what it is.

TRAVIS: Big fish. Nice fish.
TYLER: Big shark?

TRAVIS:
We'll see.

TYLER: Reel it up. It could be a
big fish. We don't know what
this is.

DAVID: Swivel.
TYLER: What do you see?

TRAVIS: Bluefin. He's wrapped
up! DAVID: Right there!

TYLER:
Gaff him. Gaff him in the tail,
Trav!

TRAVIS:
Easy.

DAVID: Nail him.
TYLER: Easy. Nice and easy.

TRAVIS: I got his ass!
DAVID: Gaff him up!

TYLER:
500 pounder. Whoo, Butterball.

TYLER: Yeah, right. [BLEEP].
TRAVIS: Yeah!

TRAVIS: Yeah.
TYLER: Come on. Say what!

TYLER: We just put our third
fish on the boat on the first
trip.

That's as many fish
as I caught all last season.

If there wasn't other people
around I might shed a tear.

TYLER:
Good job pal. Good job.

TRAVIS:
Yeah, I got my new crew on
board.

I had quite a bit of concerns
going into this but, hey.

I think everything's
gonna be all right.

TYLER: Look at the shape of this
thing. Holy [BLEEP]!

TYLER: Guys, we're gonna make
some money on this trip. This i
unbelievable.

DAVE:
You know wow. What size?

Good.

SANDRO:
Come on!

DAVE CARRARO:
Yep.

Tyler's got three.

SANDRO:
Come on. For sure?

DAVE:
Yeah.

SANDRO: [BLEEP]!
DAVE: Ah!

SANDRO:
Well, that puts the pressure on.

SANDRO: Big time.
DAVE: Yep!

SANDRO: What the [BLEEP].
DAVE: Yeah.

SANDRO: First week out.
He has three so far. Already.

We suck.

BUYER: It's about time
you caught something, Tyler!

TYLER:
It's a big day for me.

This is just as many tunas
as I caught all last season.

TYLER: When you deal with the
buyer it's the moment of truth.

That's the decision on what
we're gonna make on our catches.

And it's very important that we
get as much money as possible.

BUYER: Yeah, they're looking
nice. Nice fish!

All right.
Let's haul them out, take a
look.

Sounds good, Gut.
We'll send them up.

TYLER: The job of a tuna buyer
is to assess the fish

and tell us what we're gonna ge
per pound.

A low-quality fish can get
less than $10 a pound.

BUYER:
Beautiful!

TYLER: A good quality fish
can earn as much as 28 bucks a
pound.

BUYER:
195, dressed.

TYLER:
Sweet!

BUYER: Okay, let's take a look
at the second one there, Tyler.

409 pounds, dressed.

TYLER:
409!

BUYER:
Number three. Let's see, 372.

TYLER:
All right. Whoo!

BUYER:
Whoo. Yeah, we'll check her out.

TYLER: When a fish has good
color and it's a nice beautiful
red tail steak.

BUYER:
That first one was nice.

TYLER: He's gonna do very well
at the market.

If you have something
that's very pale

you're generally not gonna get
that good of money.

BUYER:
Wasn't as good as the other two.

When the buyer takes a core
sample he's looking for a
beautiful core.

Nice, clear translucent
color. No burn.

Just want perfection.

Got three beautiful
fish here, Got.

BUYER: All right, Tyler.
The small one's the nicest one
right here.

That glaze and shine all over.
It's got a lot of fat.

TYLER: When a buyer examines
the fat content

he wants to see the
fat spread evenly

to create a nice marbling effect
throughout the tail steak.

And really nice core. 17 bucks.

-Sweet!
TRAVIS: Yeah. Nice!

DAVID:
Perfect.

This one here. It's got decent
fat. Little bit of white cloud.

Core is good. $14 a pound.

Whoa. All right, dude!

BUYER: This last one. It's a
decent fish but it's a little
light on the fat.

BUYER: $13.
-All right.

Yep. That's a good day's pay.

TYLER:
Yeah. We'll take it.

Excellent way to start the
season. We made almost $14,000.

That's almost as much as I made
my entire season last year.

-We're gonna see you a lot more.
BUYER: See you.

DAVE: Thank you.
TRAVIS: See ya.

TRAVIS:
Tyler, I think, struggled last
year.

He's got two secret weapons now.
Me and Dave.

Let's go back to the grounds.

TRAVIS:
And I think we're gonna be just
fine.

TYLER: Ready, boys?
Hopefully we'll stay hot.

TJ OTT: What happened to our
nice day? It looks like [BLEEP]
today.

It's a big one.

TJ: Tyler is coming out of the
gate extremely hot right now.

So we've gotta stay out.
We've got to rough it out.

We gotta get on the leaderboard

because I don't wanna fall
behind this early in the race.

TIM:
Whew. Wow. Rainy out there.

There's a fish.
Hundred feet. Nice one.

MIKE: Big mark.
TIM: Big fish?

MIKE:
Yeah.

TIM: Really? Up here, huh?
MIKE: Yup.

TIM:
Oh, yeah that's him. 100 feet.

-We're on. We're on!
TJ: We're on, baby!

-We're on, Jarrett. We're on!
TIM: Reel, TJ.

Get on it. Get on here.
Get on here. Come on.

TIM:
Come on. Get off the anchor.

He's gonna go around the anchor.

JARRETT: Mike, get off the
anchor. TIM: Get off the anchor!

TIM:
Hurry up.

TIM:
Hurry. Hurry!

MIKE: Relax.
TIM: Go forward. Forward!

MIKE: We're off!
TIM: Hold on!

TJ, let me look at the lines.
Reel, Jarrett. Come on.

TJ: Where's the tag line?
TIM: It's right here.

That's why I gotta
bring that tag line!

TJ: [BLEEP] Let's get a gaff.
TIM: You just don't let go man!

TJ: I know.
He just threw it like that!
Michael.

Michael's job is to throw this
anchor line away from the
fishing rod.

TIM: We're wrapped on the
[BLEEP] tag! Go around!

TJ: However, he's throwing it
right on top of it.

The tag line is now laying over
the top of our fishing line.

That little bit of extra tension
and friction

could cause our line
to pop at any moment.

MIKE: Is it off?
TIM: No, it's wrapped on the
line.

Get over it. It's right here.

[BLEEP] Watch. Watch!

TJ: He just threw it out there.
MIKE: That's what I thought I
had to do.

TIM:
Come around hard!

TJ:
I am.

TIM: Michael he throws the tag
line over the top fishing line.

I'm definitely upset.

The line is gonna rub against
the tagline and then we lose the
fish completely.

TIM:
Back up. Back up.

Come on, TJ. Pay attention.

TIM: It's right here!
TJ: I am!

TIM:
Get this rod in line.

TJ:
Michael, move the [BLEEP] rod!

TIM: It's wrapped around. I see
it. I feel it. It's right here.

MIKE: What we have to do
to get this tagline clear

I gotta grab it with a gaff.

TIM:
Watch. Watch!

MIKE: Try and get it over the
top of the rod and get it clear
of the main line.

TJ: What do you need?
What do you need?

I can't see!

TIM: I can see.
Just keep what you're doing!

Got him. Clear. Go. Go, go, go!

TJ:
Right now everything's clear.

Hopefully we can get him under
control. Be in good shape.

We could have broke him off
then and there just like that.

[GROUP CHEERING].

JARRETT: That's the best way to
wake up right there, man.

Woo-hoo. That's a big fish man.

MIKE:
Screaming, baby.

JARRETT:
All right!

TIM: Come on, Jarrett.
That's what we're here for,
baby.

TJ:
It's getting rougher by the
minute.

TIM: He's turned around.
He's going the other way, TJ.

TJ: He's acting real weird.
Changing directions constantly.

Lot of head shaking.

TIM:
Come around. Come around.

TJ: Just really can't stay
on top of him you know?

You think you get him in a
pattern and he just completely
breaks out of it.

MIKE:
Tough fish, huh?

TIM: Yeah, Jarrett's just
trying to steer him out.

Right now we got
him in a circle .

TJ: Swivel. Swivel.
Get the dart. Get the dart!

Over here, Dad. Over here!

Swing him out, Jarrett.
Swing him out. Over here, Dad.

JARRETT:
I see him.

TJ:
You have a good shot here.

TIM: It's easier said than done.
It's a big fish.

JARRETT: Beautiful shot.
Beautiful shot. Beautiful shot!

TIM:
Oh [BLEEP]

TIM: TJ, you're rushing me, man.
Don't rush me.

TJ: I'm not rushing you.
You're rushing yourself.

TIM: You said go over there.
I wanted to stay here.

TJ:
Oh, God. So close.

MIKE: Take your time.
TIM: I am trying to.

TJ:
Michael, get back. Come on.

TIM: Here he is. Here he is.
Here he is. MIKE: Right there.
Right there.

TIM: Got him!
TJ: Sure?

TIM:
I got him. Yeah. Stop your
whining!

TJ:
I'm not, Dad. I didn't whine
anymore.

TIM:
Forward. Forward. [INAUDIBLE]

TIM: No, forward. No, forward.

JARRETT: Ah. We pulled the dart,
no! TIM: Hey, hey, hey!

MIKE: I'm trying to reach him,
TJ. TIM: Get the [BLEEP] fish.
Get him!

MIKE: I got him. I got him. Calm
down. Get a tail gaff. Come on.
Come over.

TJ: Jarrett, you hit the [BLEEP]
controls! TIM: Jesus Christ!

MIKE: Get a tail rope.
Come on. My left side, Dad.

TIM:
Holy [BLEEP].

TJ:
Whoo!

[ALL SCREAMING]

MIKE:
Oh, [BLEEP] Nice job, TJ.

JARRETT: Good job.
TJ: You gotta get that gaff in
him faster.

There was a little chaos
in the moment but I grew up with
that.

That's part of fishing
with my dad and my brother.

But at the end of the day we al
love each other and that fish is
in the box.

TIM:
Whoo!

MIKE: Just got to stay calm.
TIM: Yeah!

MIKE: Gotta stay calm.
TJ: Buddy, I'm very calm.

MIKE: No, even in the beginning.
TIM: No, you are not. You're far
from it.

JARRETT: There we go. There we
go! TIM: There we go.

JARRETT: Whoo!
TIM: That's a nice one.

MIKE:
Yeah, it's a nice one. Wow.

JARRETT:
Eighty six.

Yeah!

TJ:
We'll take it.

We couldn't be happier. It's a
rough day but we made the most
of it.

Papow. Thank God we got him.

DAVE:
Were you eating bananas before
this trip?

JASON: No, but I know somebody
who had a banana.

DAVE: It's been quiet now
but you know I'm still
encouraged.

That's tuna fishing.
They're never around constantly.

You gotta wait them out.

So we have to sit here
and watch my hair grow

while we wait for
this rod to bend.

JASON: Pretty sure it's already
starting to grow in the back.

DAVE:
We just need some fish.

JASON:
Dave, who do you blame for that?

DAVE: Well, it's probably the
guy throwing the chum.

JASON: Joe, you wanna chum?
JOE: Yeah.

TJ:
What's happening, Scotty?

TIM: We caught one nice fish.
Real nice fish.

Let's check it out.

TJ:
All right. Let's do it.

SCOTTY:
275 pounds, dressed.

MIKE:
Whoo.

JARRETT:
We'll take it.

TJ: Got a core.
JARRETT: Yep. Yep.

TIM: No burn, baby!
TJ: Nice!

TJ: We'll take it!
TIM: Nice fish.

SCOTTY: That is definitely
a diamond right there.

TJ: Diamond, dude.
SCOTTY: Yeah.

TJ:
What are you thinking?

SCOTTY: Well, the way the market
is... With all this fat.

TIM:
It's got fat in the majors.

SCOTTY:
This color you know. Really oily
fish.

TIM: What do you think?
SCOTTY: I'm gonna have to say...

It'll be $25 a pound.

TJ: Papow!
JARRETT: Yeah!

MIKE: Yeah. Hells, yeah.
That's how you start it.

TJ: At $25 a pound
that's almost $7,000.

There's not much more we can
want right now.

That's the ultimate
exclamation point

to start off our season this
year in Gloucester.

TJ: Thanks, buddy.
TIM: Great start.

TJ: Right now Tyler's off to a
fast start. We're off to a fast
start.

We can't worry about those guys.

We just gotta turn and burn
and get back out there.

TJ:
There's no rest for the weary
right now.

It's anyone's game. Papow!

DAVE:
This is it.

SANDRO:
We need at least one in this
trip.

DAVE:
Tyler's got three fish right now

and we got nothing
and we gotta make it happen.

Failure's not an option.

SANDRO: Dave's really worked up
about Tyler having three fish
already.

I've never seen anything like
this. He's pretty nervous.

DAVE:
Gonna do whatever it takes.

No way am I going to let that
little punk beat me.

No way. No how.

This one's swimming
around down there.

We gotta put... Whoa!

Back off for the
drag. Back up on drag.

Told you we'd get him.

We're on.

Go.

SANDRO: He's going right
for the anchor though.

DAVE: All right.
I'm going to start it. I'll
drift off.

The fish makes a
run under the boat.

The line is getting
chaffed on the hull.

I'm gonna pop off.
Go right. Right?

SANDRO:
Yep.

Now we're questioning
the integrity of the line.

It's just gonna [INAUDIBLE]
Okay. You're good.

SANDRO:
Whoo. Hooked up. Big boy.

DAVE:
That line might be a little
weak.

SANDRO:
What?

DAVE:
That line might be a little
weak.

SANDRO:
Oh, God.

DAVE: Right now Sandro and I
are fighting this fish

on a very very weak line.

The line could break at any tim
so we gotta get this fish on the
boat

and we gotta get him in quickly

Right there.

SANDRO:
It's a big boy here.

Taking all. How much line do we
have left? We have barely any
line left.

Whoo, baby!

DAVE:
Get him, Sanchie!

First fish of the
season. We need it.

SANDRO:
Color.

DAVE:
There he is!

SANDRO:
Pulling left, obviously.

DAVE:
Now hit him hard. Hit him hard!

Forward left. Forward left.
Forward left. Forward left.

All the way around.

DAVE:
The line's all chaffed up I see
it.

DAVE: It's rubber band.
SANDRO: He coming?

He's rolling around down there.

Gonna get a good shot here.

DAVE:
Color. Color.

SANDRO:
Take the shot.

SANDRO:
Got one.

DAVE: Got him?
SANDRO: Oh, I got him!

DAVE: Okay, hold it. Hold it.
Oh, right in his belly.

DAVE:
Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo. Yeah.

SANDRO: Oh, I got him. I got
him. DAVE: Yeah!

SANDRO:
Yeah.

We got one!

SANDRO: Now it's game time baby.
Now it's game time.

DAVE:
Coming at you, Tyler!

SANDRO:
It doesn't get any better than
that.

DAVE:
One, two, and three.

SANDRO:
Yeah.

DAVE:
Break in the ice here, Sanchie.

DAVE:
It looks nice.

Ninety two and a half.

DAVE: Even though Tyler's ahead
of us right now, this is just
the beginning.

The more fish he catches,

guarantee the more fish we're
gonna catch on this boat right
here.

Yep.

SCOTTY:
Good start. Let's take a look.

DAVE: Everybody this year's off
to a very fast start.

With that said it's gonna be
a big-big battle.

We gotta fish super-super hard.
A lot harder than we did last
year.

SCOTTY:
293 pounds, dressed.

DAVE:
293?

I'll take it. All right.
Let's check him out.

Let's see what he looks like.

SCOTTY:
Let's see what we got.

SANDRO: He's not bad.
DAVE: No. It still held up nice.

SCOTTY: Nice Color.
SANDRO: Yeah.

DAVE: What do you think?
Early season fish. Not a lot of
fat.

SCOTTY: Yep. This fish right
here. With the color and the
fat...

This skinny fish.

DAVE:
We need a good price.

SCOTTY: This fish,
I'll do you guys $14 a pound.

DAVE: Yeah? All right. Yeah.
SANDRO: 14?

We'll take 14. Absolutely.

We brought
in a fish today it was 293
pounds.

It wasn't as good
but we got just over $4000.

You wanna go back out
or you wanna go home?

SANDRO: We got Tyler to beat
now. DAVE: Let's go. Good way to
start.

DAVE: Thank you very much.
SANDRO: Thanks.

DAVE: Tyler on the Pin Wheel,
he's coming back with fire in
his eyes

and we saw that the
last couple days.

We're gonna go back out and do a
repeat of last year and better.

NARRATOR:
At the end of week one

Pin Wheel's three fish haul
gives them the early lead.

And Hot Tuna's top quality fish
pushes them into second place.

TYLER:
Say we have a little fun.

We're gonna do some skurfing.

TRAVIS:
Go ahead. Go. Go. Go.

DAVID:
Slow down a little bit!

TYLER:
Banging fish out like this.

Bing, bang, boom. Perfect.
I got my mojo back.

TYLER:
It's skurfing, dude!

DAVID:
Whoo!

SANDRO:
Oh, my Lord!

DAVE:
Yeah, what are they?
Wakeboarding?

SANDRO:
Yeah!

Tyler in general is just a punk.

He's just a young...
Actually he's not even young.

He's an old, immature kid.

Wakeboarding in shark
-infested waters.

Kid's a safety hazard.

PAUL HEBERT: I've never seen
anything like it. I gotta film
this.

Tyler's on fire.

This is gonna raise everyone's
game through the frigginG roof
this year.

Everyone's gonna
be pushing for him.

TYLER:
Look at him go.

He's gonna pass us.

TYLER:
Yeah! Money!

-Whoo!
TYLER: Whoo!

JASON: Here comes pin wheel.
Dave, look at this!

The kid's on the back surfing!

Hang in it.

Oh! Ate it!

DAVE:
Crazy kids!
