Wentworth (2013–…): Season 3, Episode 4 - Righteous Acts - full transcript

Liz's world is rocked when Sophie is remanded in Wentworth for a drunken hit-and-run. Liz has to counsel and protect a freaked-out Sophie, particularly from lesbian trio Lucy, Stella and Rhonda. Franky has commenced her sessions with Bridget and, in a candid move, admits to a desire for revenge against Bea. When Bea is shivved in the yard, Franky comes under suspicion, but Bea quickly realises Jodie, freshly released from the slot where she was terrorised by Ferguson, was behind the attack at the Governor's behest. Kaz Proctor, a violent vigilante obsessed with women's rights, publicly declares Bea as her personal hero and requests to visit her at Wentworth.

[Indistinct shouting]

You don't run this prison. I do.

- [Slap]
- JODIE: Oh!

[Crying] Please,
just leave me alone.

The governor has
agreed on your release.

She wants me out of here
so she can get to Jodie.

She came in last night.

She did something
to her. She was crying.

Smith.

Someone thinks you're a hero.

Kaz Proctor?
Sounds like a nutcase.

Miss Bennett has kindly agreed

to withdraw the
verbal abuse charge.

Now, there are conditions,

first that you attend
regular counseling sessions,

starting tomorrow.

Thanks, Gidget.

Have you been drinking?

You do not get to
lecture me about drinking!

When you drink,
love, you're vulnerable.

No, when I drink, I forget
that my mum ruined my life.

[Voice breaking]
Soph, I'm sorry.

BEA: Did they find
some DNA at the scene?

Is that why they're testing you?

I was at the house
the night he died.

You're so beautiful.

ROSE: [Laughs]

Hello, lover.

Get that in my honor, love.

She's got lovely
friends in D block.

They've got some
condiment racket going on.

They want to trade Cindy's

I said, trade ahead,

DOREEN: Obstetrician's
coming tomorrow at 12:00, Liz?

- Liz?
- Sorry, what?

I said my obstetrician's
coming tomorrow at 12:00.

- For my checkup.
- Oh, right.

So you'll be there, yeah?

Yeah, yeah. I wouldn't miss it.

You okay, Liz?

No, I think I need
some wakey juice.

Does anybody want a cuppa?

So, what if it's genetic?

Sure, there's growing

a genetic link with
alcoholism, I won't lie to you.

she watched her alkie

But what we can do now

is concentrate on
what we can control.

Yeah, but I can't
control bloody anything

because I'm stuck in
here and she's out there.

Then when I called
her the other day,

I could hardly get any
bloody sense out of her.

I mean, what if she's
gone and got pissed again,

and some bloke has raped her?

What makes you say that?

'Cause you didn't hear
her voice on the phone.

Something's wrong.

You try calling her again?

I've tried, and they
see the number calling

and they don't pick up.

I'm stuffed.

She's got a lot of support.
She's got her father...

Should be me.

It should have always been me.

Let's stay here all day.

if we both pull a sickie.

What's she gonna do, huh?

call her the Freak?

- Who?

Your DNA came back negative
on the DNA found at Smith's house.

Hey, Miss Westfall.

- Liz, I told you... Bridget.
- Bridget, Bridget.

- No, not yet.
- Well, did you call her mobile?

Called her mobile and the
other number that you gave me.

from the prison line?

No, I called from my phone.

Birdsworth here.

Um, just wondering if I
could speak to Soph, please.

Where is she?

'Cause I've been
trying her mobile,

and you know, I

Kay?

'Cause when I spoke to
Soph, she seemed really upset.

Sorry, what?

So, what do you

I'm... What... What for?

Kay, has something
happened to Soph?

Kay? Kay!

Now you can use

Fuck.

LIZ: Fuck!

Yes, I'm sure you do.

Considering the pressure

it might be in
everyone's best interests

if you take some time off,

just until the
matter's resolved.

Well, I don't have
any holidays owing.

No, I'm afraid it would
have to be unpaid leave.

Well, you don't believe
what the police are saying,

do you, Governor?

Of course not.

But given Bea
Smith's association,

it won't be long
before all the prisoners

find out what's going on.

It's bound to undermine
your position of authority here.

Well, I'll deal with
any insubordination.

I'd prefer not to
take leave, Governor.

Hmm.

Your decision.

- G'day.
- Hey, Liz.

Excuse me, Governor,
can I speak to you, please?

It's urgent.

What is it?

I need to get in contact
with my daughter.

Is she on your call list?

Yeah, but she's not
answering her phone.

Well, perhaps she doesn't
wish to speak with you.

No, no, I think something
bad has happened

and I need permission
to call hospitals.

Birdsworth, you know
that's not how it's done.

Yeah, I know,
but I just need help

to track her down, Governor.

We are under no obligation

to track down family
members on the outside.

No, but this is an emergency.

Well, have you tried
your ex-husband, Liz?

Yes, I have,

and they are deliberately
shutting me out.

Well, then, it is
out of your hands

and it's out of ours too.

- Oh, God, you don't understand.
- I understand perfectly.

I need to speak to my daughter!

You will not raise your
voice to me, Birdsworth.

Oh, I will do more than
raise my frigging voice.

I'll tear this bloody
fence down...

You will release the
fence and back away.

If somebody won't help
me get in touch with Sophie!

FERGUSON: Release the fence...

- It's a reasonable thing to ask!
- And walk away.

I just want to speak
to Sophie, okay?

- GUARD: Come on.
- Don't you dare touch me!

I just want to get
in touch with her!

I just want to speak to Sophie!

BEA: It's okay, it's okay.

Let go of me, mate. Get off!

Can't I call her?!

I just want to speak
to my daughter, please!

You're supposed to be
keeping an eye on her, Boomer.

Liz, I'm gonna leave
you a couple of these pills

just to help you relax, okay?

- Thanks.
- It's all right.

[Door closes]

Oh, fuck.

[Keys jingle]

[Door unlocks]

Birdie, get up.

Let's go, Birdie. Wake up.

What?

What?

Come on, let's go.

[Woman sobbing]

[Sobbing continues]

She won't let the
officers process her.

And now she's refusing to
cooperate with the strip search.

Sorry?

Birdsworth, I need you
to help me calm her down.

Mum.

Soph.

What happened, darl?

I hit him.

Hit? Hit who?

Um...

A man.

On the bike.

With Dad's car.

A cyclist?

He's dead.

You... You shouldn't be in here.

Why have they... Why
have you been remanded?

Didn't they give you bail?

That's not... That's not right.

It's not right.

'Cause you're just a
baby... I didn't stop.

I... I was over the limit.

[Crying] Oh, no.

Oh, God.

- It's my fault.
- Don't touch me!

[Footsteps, keys jingling]

Right, let's go.

[Beep, door unlocks]

Just keep walking
straight, Soph.

[Woman laughs]

Don't worry about
it. You're all right.

At least I'll get
some fucking sleep.

Then again, I
don't mind sharing.

Yeah, move it, Gambaro.

There's a cell in
H3 waiting for you.

I've put you in the cell next
to your mother, Donaldson.

I appreciate that, Miss Bennett.

Well, the decision
was a pragmatic one.

Hopefully she'll
settle in more quickly

and with less disruption.

Okay. Come on.

You're all right.

Just that one there. Here we go.

Well, I'll leave you to
conduct the orientation.

Thanks.

Well, it needs a
couple of posters.

DOREEN: Liz?

- Hey.
- Hey.

Uh, Miss Miles, she
come and told us.

Yeah, thought we'd come
and see if you need anything.

Oh, well, that's very
thoughtful of Miss Miles, isn't it?

Um, this is Sophie.

This is one of my best mates
in the whole world, Doreen.

Yep, she's got a
little bundle there.

And, uh, this is Bea.

Hey.

And Bea's what you
call the top dog, Soph,

and that means you got
nothing to worry about

'cause she'll protect you.

Isn't that right?

Yeah, of course.

Protect me? From... From what?

Oh, no, love. It's
not like that, no.

It's all... It's all
very nice in here.

Oh, yeah, yeah,
everyone's real friendly.

Oh, look, here's Maxine.

Maxine, come and say hi to Soph.

Hi, Sophie, welcome. Hi.

Your mum has talked
about you so much.

MAN ON P.A.:
Attention, compound.

Final count will
commence in two minutes.

Right, we should get going.

It's really nice to
meet you, Sophie.

Yeah. We'll speak
tomorrow, yeah?

Yeah, that'd be good.

LINDA: By your doors, ladies.

So, um, you got to...

You got to be standing by
your door for the head count.

Um, don't borrow anyone
else's stuff without asking.

Except for mine.

You can take whatever
you want of mine.

And, um, what else, what else?

Oh, yeah, the, uh...
The panic button there.

Don't ever push it.

We... We can talk more
when they lock the gate.

Maybe watch telly or something.

I-I just want to be left alone.

Birdsworth, move it.

Okay, yeah, sure.

You've got to stand...

[Crying]

No, just leave
me the fuck alone!

- [Crying] Sorry.
- It's okay.

Sorry.

What the fuck did the
Freak do to you in the slot?

Nothing.

She didn't do anything to me.

Bullshit.

- You fucked me over.
- No, baby, I didn't.

Don't lie to me.

I'm not. I can't tell...

I can't.

It was Red, wasn't it?

SOPHIE: [Crying]

Soph.

M-Mum.

- Oh, darling.
- [Sobbing] Mum.

Shove over, darling. Shove over.

Come on.

Come here, darling.

It's all right. It's
all right, lovey.

It's all right.

BEA: Can I help you?

Oh, looks like I'm not
the only groupie magnet

in the big panty palace.

"Righteous act of retribution."

She's a wild one.

- What the fuck do you want?
- You set Jodie up to get to me.

- What, did she tell you that?
- It's really fucked up.

Why use Jodie?
Why not just burn me?

Jodie obviously didn't
cope so well in the slot.

Does she even
know what day it is?

You fucking don't
know the half of it.

MAXINE: What's going on?

Relax, Maxi Pad. You'll
give yourself a prolapse.

Excuse me.

Jodie's gonna get it.

- Oh, Bea, just let it go.
- No.

That little snitch needs
to be taught a lesson.

She's not scheduled.

I'm scheduling her now.

I don't even have
the paperwork for it.

I'll write it up.

Okay, fine.

Jodie, you're to be
subject to a urine test.

Are you up to
giving me a sample?

- Yeah.
- Okay.

Take this.

Just walk this way with me.

VERA: Oh.

Oh, for God's sake, Spiteri.

If you think you can
dodge this test, think again.

What's Spiteri doing here?

She's failing to
comply with a drug test.

I don't recall any
testing on the schedule.

It's a spot test, Governor.

I judged Spiteri's demeanor
to be erratic and withdrawn.

The prisoner has just
spent two weeks in isolation.

You don't think that might
explain her withdrawn behavior?

Smith.

Take Spiteri back to your unit.

Now.

- Get her cleaned up.
- Yes, Governor.

Hi, Jodie.

Let's get you cleaned up, huh?

I suggest we don't waste time

with any extraneous
testing, agreed?

Yes, Governor.

Organize a prisoner to do that.

Oh, it's okay. I'm
nearly finished.

Fuck!

You gonna help me?

Yeah, yeah.

We'll give you a hand.

After you tell us
about that conversation

you had with Franky.

[Crying] No, but you
said you were taking a cut.

And then Maxine
takes the fucking lot.

And then she plants
the shit in my cell.

You know I'm gonna
do more time for that.

I should knock your fucking
head off, you little snitch!

I fucking hate her. I
want to kill the bitch.

Is that honest enough for you?

I won't put that
down in my report.

Because you think it'll
prejudice the parole board?

Maybe.

You may joke, Franky,
but I've heard all the stories.

You know, Smith played you.

It's not like you had any choice

giving up power to her.

So how's that make you feel?

Come on.

Isn't there that
small part of you

that's just a... A
teensy bit pissed off?

Come on, these walls won't talk.

You can tell me anything.

I want to get inside
that mind of yours.

Just my mind?

You know how exhausting
it is being top dog?

Why don't you tell me?

You never know who
wants to fuck you or fight you.

That just sounds
confusing rather than tiring.

It's all that tit-for-tat,

"I can crap bigger
than you" bullshit.

Trying to feed the hopheads,

work the screws,
fuck off the Freak.

Takes up too much head
space. Makes you fucking mental.

You seen Queen Bea lately?

I swear she's a fucking
red cunt's hair away

from going postal.

Look, Gidget, I get
what you're trying to do.

- Understand you.
- No, poke me.

See if I bite.

But I got more important
things to worry about

than Bea fucking Smith.

Like what?

Like getting out
of this shithouse.

Parole's my total focus.
Scout's honor, Doc.

I'm a psychologist.

And I'm a reformed individual
with just one thing on my mind.

And it's not payback.

[Knock on door]

You wanted to see me, Governor?

Come in.

Close the door. Sit down.

Nurse Atkins, how
are you coping?

Ah, fine.

Good. Yes.

I love the job.

It must be very
difficult for you,

this situation with Mr. Jackson.

You know, as governor,

I want to be sure that you
don't become a victim here.

A victim of what?

Ridicule and innuendo.

From the prisoners.

Because of your association
with Officer Jackson.

Oh, I'm sure the prisoners

aren't aware of our association.

Don't be ridiculous.
Of course they are.

I mean, to be honest,
I'm a little surprised

you haven't been
targeted already,

considering Mr. Jackson's
rumored relationship

with Bea Smith.

That rumor was unfounded.

Of course, there's
this unfortunate matter

with the police.

You know, given that most
prisoners claim innocence,

I'm not so sure the women
here will be convinced of his.

Will isn't capable
of hurting anyone.

No, of course not.

Although I suspect Mr. Fletcher

might have something
to say about that.

Will and Fletch have
sorted out their differences.

Have they?

Yeah.

Will's visited Fletch in rehab,

and they had a good chat.

Cleared the air
about everything.

Shit.

Oh, shit, shit.

Mr. Fletcher.

Joan Ferguson.

White with one.

It's good to see you've got
some people around you.

I don't imagine you've
had much opportunity

for socializing.

You don't like me.

Why do you say that?

I remember.

We didn't get on.

It's true we had a
mild personality clash.

You had some problems
with women in authority.

But I don't hold grudges.
The past is the past.

All I care about
now, Mr. Fletcher,

is for you to drink your
coffee before it gets cold.

I hear you had
a visitor recently.

A work colleague?

Vera.

I'm speaking of Mr. Jackson.

Vera comes to visit me.

[Indistinct shouting]

- FRANKY: Bullshit!
- [Cheering]

What are you doing,
Linds?! Need to be on her!

- Fucking got to think!
- LINDSAY: I was!

Hey! Yo!

Here! Here, here! Franky!

Hey, gorgeous?

Why don't you come
and join the game?

Play with my boys.

FRANKY: Oi, give
us the ball back.

She doesn't play
for your team, Juice.

How does she know
what team she plays for

until she gives it a go?

The girl's out of
bounds, all right, Juice?

Now just take your
hard-on somewhere else

and throw the ball
back in the game.

LUCY: Yeah, whatever, Bea.

Only trying to make
friends with the cherry.

Just play the game.

It's all right, love.
She's just harmless.

WOMAN: Yeah, come
on, play the game.

- FRANKY: All right, let's go.
- Thanks, Bea.

[Indistinct shouting]

Maxine, who's winning?

We are! Hey, hello.

How'd the obstetrician go?

Oh, yeah, really good.

Everything's as it should be.

And sorted out a birth plan, eh?

Oh, Dor, I'm
really bloody sorry.

I completely forgot, love.

Oh, that's all right.

You know, you've
got a lot on your mind.

But it's okay 'cause
Jess came with me.

How'd it go?

We heard the baby's
heartbeat, and it was so amazing.

Was it?

WOMAN: Concentrate!

That was a fucking foul!

Bull-fucking-shit!

Give her the ball, you skank.

FRANKY: You've
got two balls, Juice.

Why don't you give
her one of your own?

Oh, go finger yourself, Franky.

Or maybe you want
me to do it for you.

Just play the
game! Oh, cut it out!

[Indistinct shouting]

WILL: Oi! Break it up!

Break it up! I said break it up!

Come here!

- You all right?
- Fuck.

Yeah, I'm all right, thanks.

WILL: Now!

FRANKY: Oh. Sorry, Red.

Hey, hey, no, Bea.
You're bleeding, love.

She's been shivved.

VERA: No, no. I've got it.

- WILL: Up against the wall.
- VERA: Let's go.

What the fuck?

Up against the wall.

[Beep, gate unlocks]

Hey. How's the patient?

A dozen stitches.

The doctor said she's lucky

the angle of the blade
resulted in a laceration

and not a puncture wound.

It could have cost her a kidney.

You want to give us a minute?

Okay. Yeah, sure.

Can I have some
pain relief, please?

I'll organize something.

So, any point asking who did it?

[Chuckles]

My DNA wasn't a match.
It puts me in the clear.

Yeah.

That's good.

Thanks.

Thank you.

No, no, you need to stay
here for another couple of hours

for observation, okay?

FERGUSON: [Chuckles]

It's amazing, isn't it?

You think you
command total loyalty,

and then a knife in
the back reminds us

we're not as
invulnerable as we think.

Shit happens.

Frequently.

But if this really
is your prison,

then shouldn't that shit be
happening to somebody else?

You know, using a
riot to exercise power...

You know, if you
rule through chaos,

you reap what you sow.

Real leadership,
Smith, takes control,

detachment, and planning.

It's knowing when to act

and when to let others
take action for you.

Where is it?

What?

Ow!

- The shiv.
- It wasn't me, I swear!

Hey, Maxine, it's all right.

- Fuck!
- Hey!

JODIE: Fuck.

Now, Jodie, when
you pissed yourself,

you weren't trying to
dodge the drug test.

You were scared shitless.

I'm not angry. I'm not.

I just want you to tell
me the truth, all right?

I think Ferguson
got to you in the slot.

Did she give you
the shiv too? Yeah?

Give you a little
bit of gear, maybe?

She did, didn't she?

She got you high,

and she told you to come
at me, didn't she, Jodie?

It's all right. You can tell me.

Didn't she?

Just say it.

- Did she?
- All right!

I didn't have a choice!

What else could I do?

The fucking Freak made me do it.

It was in the exercise yard.

Dropped in one of the drains.

Good work.

Um, about today...

The drug testing
of Jodie Spiteri.

You don't need to explain
your actions to me, Vera.

No, I just feel like...

You know, you are a fine
deputy governor, Vera.

It's just that your judgment

can be a little
wayward at times.

I mean, take your visits to
Mr. Fletcher, for instance.

It's not that you've been

going to see him in
rehab that disturbs me.

It's that you felt you
could explicitly lie about it.

I'm sorry.

What, you're sorry because
you knew it would be seen

as a betrayal?

That you were compromising
your loyalty to me

and to this prison by
associating with him?

I didn't want to
hurt your feelings.

That is...

so considerate of you.

There will be no further
need to see Mr. Fletcher.

He's no longer a colleague,

and given what he's
put us both through,

we can hardly call
him a friend, hmm?

Though, I must ask,
Vera, just in light of this...

deliberate deception,

just where does
your loyalty lie?

With you, Governor.

I'm so sorry... I
didn't hear that.

With you, Governor.

Always with you.

Incinerate that.

Yes, Governor.

[Door closes]

BRIDGET: Thought
you ran the kitchen.

I like to mop shit too.

Helps me keep it real.

I hear Bea Smith's in medical
after being shivved in the yard.

What's your point?

No point. Just saying that...

You fucking serious?

You ask me for honesty,
which I gave you,

and then you accuse
me of that shit?

- No, I'm not accusing you.
- Bullshit you aren't.

All right, I was worried
about you, that's all.

Worried. That I went
and shivved Bea.

No, that I'd pushed you too far.

You need to stay the
fuck away from me.

Okay.

Sorry.

[Exhales sharply]

You can stick your
sorry up your ass.

[Water dripping]

LIZ: Okay, so I got
you some toiletries,

but if you want anything fancy,

you just have to
wait for the screws

'cause they have a
special spend once a month.

Can I... What, love?

Shower in my underwear?

Yeah. Course you can.

I used to do that
when I was a newbie.

[Laughs]

Oh, looky here, boys.

Bath time's gonna
be fun for a change.

Ah, no, we've just finished.

That's weird... no steam.

Unless you both
took a cold shower.

Hardens the nips, eh?

[Laughs]

No, w-we'll come
back later. That's fine.

No! No!

Please don't hurt me.

I'm not gonna hurt you,
Soph. I'm all about pleasure.

Aah! You bitch!

You touch her, I swear
to God, I'll kill you!

I bet you taste tickety-boo.

Get off me!

Like strawberry
milkshake. [Laughs]

If Bea hears about this,
mate, she's gonna get you!

Aah!

Something you should know...

We've all got a
touch of the hep C.

But don't you worry, baby doll.

You can only catch
it once. [Laughs]

Juice?

You want some more, you
sick fuck, bull-dyke bitch?

Aah! Ah, fuck!

You're all right, love.
They're gone now.

They're gone now.

Oh, baby.

[Conversing indistinctly]

Lizzie.

What's going on?

I just wanted to say thank you
for what you did earlier today.

Yeah, sweet.

Kind of busy.

Oh, right. Right,
well, talk to you later.

Is that my mum, Franky?

Yeah, she's just leaving, bub.

Mum! Mum!

Have a drink!

Franky and me
are having a party!

Oh, no, come on, Soph.

Mnh-mnh.

I said come on.

Give me that.

No, come on. We've got
head count in ten minutes.

But we're having a party.

No, you're in prison
now, love. Party's over.

Fuck you.

Go. Quick.

Am I gonna have
to tell a few jokes

to get a smile tonight?

I'm terrible at
telling jokes, okay?

Will, I...

Just this whole
police thing. I just...

I mean, why they think
you killed Harry Smith.

It's because of Bea, isn't it?

What do you mean?

You guys have a
connection. I've seen it.

I thought we'd
been through that.

- No, I'm not accusing you...
- But, then, what then?

Police don't break down
people's doors for no reason.

What were they looking for?

Tell me.

A murder weapon.

Oh, my God. Have
you spoken to a lawyer?

It's bullshit, Rose.

No, you need to take
this seriously, Will.

Okay, um...

All right, you know what?
I'm... I'm just gonna go.

Rose. Come on, please?

Look, maybe I'm
overreacting or maybe not.

I'm tired.

My shifts have been all
over the shop, so I'm just...

Rose, c-can we just...

Can we just talk
about this, please?

I just need some rest, okay?

I'll see you tomorrow.
