War of the Worlds (1988–1990): Season 1, Episode 23 - The Angel of Death - full transcript

A competing alien race sends an assassin to eliminate the invading force and to protect humanity.

In 1953, Earth experienced
a war of the worlds.

Common bacteria
stopped the aliens,

but it didn't kill them.

Instead, the aliens lapsed
into a state of deep hibernation.

Now the aliens have
been resurrected,

more terrifying
than ever before.

In 1953, aliens started
taking over the world.

Today, they're taking
over our bodies.

Paul is dead.

Headquarters, come in.

Headquarters?! Anybody!

Who are you?

Remember nothing!

Arrival complete.

Beginning seven day mission.

What is that?

Where is the Advocacy?

Tell me, where
are your leaders?!

37 dead aliens in the last

two days?

And we haven't had
anything to do with it?

That is affirmative.

Then who is doing it?

Well, whoever
it is is real good.

Chalk up three more

dead aliens to the body count.

Could they be having
some kind of civil war?

My own theory

is that it's an armed mutiny
against the alien leaders.

But why?

Well, maybe they
promised their people

an easy victory
they did not deliver.

Bad policy.

Leave me alone!

Stay away!

Get back!

I... I know who you are.

You're-you're from Qar'To!

Since you know that,

you also know I
seek your leaders.

Last time... Where
is the Advocacy?

Whereabouts of alien
leaders still unknown.

Day Three.

Damn. What a way to go.

Yeah, without a parachute, too.

It's a pretty rude
stop at the bottom.

Do you have any theories?

Well, I think we're dealing
with the same phenomena here.

Whatever's out there
killing aliens did that, too.

But we're talking about a
different M.O. here, Harrison.

There's no signs of a struggle.

Now, wait a minute.

Are you suggesting
that he'd let himself

be pushed into this shaft?

No, I think he jumped.

23 floors?

Now, why the hell
would he do that?

Because whatever
he was afraid of

is worse than 23 floors
without a parachute.

What could be worse than that?

They are destroying us

street by street, city by city.

Who is "they?"

Who is killing us?

Humans who have found
a way of recognizing us.

But how?

We are invisible

inside their repulsive,
primitive bodies.

It is obvious that is
no longer the case.

We must warn all units

of this new and growing danger.

Our soldiers must
avoid human contact

except where
absolutely necessary.

We are ready, Advocate.

Find those with the ability
to see us as our true selves.

How is this to be
done, Advocate?

Those humans

will come looking for us again.

But do not kill them.

Bring us their living bodies,

so their minds and memory

will betray their comrades.

So it will be.

To life... immortal.

To life immortal.

We're under attack, Advocate!

Who is attacking you?

Come in! Report immediately!

Where is the Advocacy?!

Come in! Report immed...!

Our communications
link has been broken.

So it would appear.

But by whom?

What is the true nature
of this killing menace?

Discover that, comrades,

and we will discover the
means of fighting back.

Roger, 74.

Coroner's unit dispatched...

With these three, the
tally's up to 86 in four days.

We still don't have a
clue as to who's doing it.

Except for this new from

of alien residue,
whatever it is.

And extremely high
radiation readings,

like the ones inside.

Like the other hits
that we can't explain...

Over five cities now.

And each time it
happens, Colonel,

they go a little more public.

Suzanne?

I got what I need.

Let's go.

Harrison.

How can you see anything?

Harrison!

Did you knock?

Yes. Three times.

What are you doing?

I'm contemplating the problem.

Well, if we could

finally catch some
of these aliens,

maybe they could tell us
what the hell is going on.

Here's today's lab results

from the alien residue analysis.

Well, this is just
what I expected.

Do you know those
white crystals?

Organic tissue
turned into glass.

I've only seen this phenomena

recorded once before.

Where was that?

That was at Hiroshima
and Nagasaki.

Are you saying that these aliens

have been killed by some
small nuclear device?

Well, it would fit.

The radiation levels
are far above the norm,

and there's this... this
chalky white outline

around the alien bodies.

Do we have any kind of weapon

that would do
something like that?

Atomic bullets?

Nothing like that
on Earth exists.

Thank God.

Colonel...

my hunch is that
we're dealing with

something entirely new here.

Yeah, but what?

New players in the game.

What do you mean new players?

New aliens.

Inquiry method useless.

Will pursue other access.

Day Five.

Okay, excepting for
the mutant alien, Quinn,

we've had absolutely no
information from the enemy.

And to win this war, we're
going to have to have it.

Therefore, the object
of this operation

is to capture
these aliens alive.

Colonel.

For our trap, I have selected

an old warehouse in a relatively

deserted urban area.

Why a warehouse?

Well, aside from

reducing the risk
to innocent civilians,

it fits all the criteria

for a typical alien-style

strategic location.

So, what's the plan, Colonel?

Omega Squad will set up

a perimeter outside

the warehouse here.

The hostiles will enter

there... the only open way
in or out of the complex.

Now does anyone
have any suggestions

as to how we lure them inside?

Well, I could set up
a transmitter inside

and we could broadcast
recordings of intercepted

alien transmissions
on all frequencies.

There is only just one problem.

What's that?

I have absolutely no idea
what those transmissions say.

I mean, it could be
bird calls for all I know.

Well, it's no need to know.

Whether they think it's a lost
alien patrol using crude SOS

or a trap, doesn't
matter either way.

They're gonna
have to check it out.

And once inside,

we've got them.

Good.

Suzanne, how's that
new weapon coming?

Just finished.

I've developed

a dependable bacterial method
of capturing the aliens alive...

Unconscious,

but not dead... using
microbes friendly to humans.

Excellent.

Well, if all goes
according to plan, then,

we'll be able to use
our new psych program

to make these
alien prisoners talk.

Well, without it we're dead.

"Know your enemy."

"And know yourself,

and victory will be yours."

Well, I'm glad to see they
are still teaching Sun Tzu

at West Point, Colonel.

Little did an old Chinese
general ever imagine

that one day his advice

would apply to aliens
from outer space.

Only the face of the
enemy has changed.

An obvious trick to
lure us into a trap.

The idiocy of the humans
never ceases to amaze me.

Idiocy, comrade, or brilliance?

Trap or not,

it would appear we
must take their bait

if we ever hope to
learn their secret.

And so it shall be.

It's a brilliant idea...

Playing back their
own messages as bait.

You know I think this one's
actually gonna work, Harrison.

Don't thank me. Thank Norton.

Thank you, Norton.

You're welcome.

If it works. It'll
cost you a cigar.

The bacterial jet
guns are tested

and ready for action.

Now this will work,
yes, Suzanne?

It'll bring 'em back alive.

At least it ought to.

That's reassuring.

Bogie in sight, Apple One. Over.

Let them get inside,
Apple Two. Over.

Aye, aye, Colonel. Over.

They've recorded our
broadcast communications.

Obviously they have
no idea what they mean.

Are all cameras
operating and functional?

Proceed according to counsel.

The birds are loose,
Apple One. Over.

Steady, Apple Two. Over.

Birds in the cage, Apple One.

Now!

We got 'em! We got 'em!

Okay, get their weapons!

What's that?

It seems to be coming
from... everywhere.

Remember nothing.

What's wrong?

Ironhorse!

Ironhorse!

Paul!

Colonel!

Paul?

Colonel, where are you?

Stay where you are, Harrison!

Paul?

Colonel! Paul!

Remember nothing.

Paul!

Paul!

Ironhorse!

Ironhorse is dead.

I prefer to believe he's
in pursuit of the aliens.

Norton, even if
he was in pursuit,

he would call in, wouldn't he?

Look, his people are doing

everything they can to find him.

Let's face it...

He's dead.

Let's not face it yet, Harrison.

Take a look at the analysis
of the alien body remains.

Same M.O. Same weapon.

No human casualties.

Oh, Suzanne, maybe he is safe.

I betcha Paul has them
right where he wants them.

Where am I?

Earth!

Who are you, human?

Lieutenant Colonel Paul
Ironhorse, U.S. Army.

Tell me, commander
of the humans...

Where is the Advocacy?

Who the hell are you?

Last time.

Tell me!

Where are the leaders

of the aliens?

If I knew that, I would
kill them myself long ago.

I... am... Katara.

Sent from planet Qar'To

to annihilate the
People of the Three

from planet Mor'Tax.

Then you're not the same
kind as the other aliens.

That is obvious to all.

Where's the rest of your team?

I am the only one.

You're it?

Against thousands
of hostile aliens?

Only one is needed

to accomplish this simple task.

I think...

you and I can help each other.

What the hell are you doing?

You might call it mind reading.

I think I'll pass.

Yield... to me.

You were ordered not to return

without those
humans who know us.

Spare me, Advocate.

They are not human.

Not human?

I saw their method of attack.

I saw their weapons.

What are you saying?

I saw their leader.

It is a Synth from
the planet Qar'To.

It has assumed the shape

of a human female.

But you can
recognize the leader?

Yes.

Our camera recorded
its abhorrent image.

This is the one.

Join us comrades
and hear our plan.

No one from Qar'To
can be allowed

to live on this planet.

Find the leader
and bring her here.

I am nothing
without your counsel.

To life immortal.

To life immortal.

And through General
Henry J. Wilson,

I have direct authority from the
President of the United States

to wage war against the aliens.

I...

believe...

I don't remember that
I already told you that.

That is good.

It is good.

Remember nothing.

Open your eyes now.

What did you do to me?

My throat, it's so dry.

You had much to tell me.

What the hell did I tell you?

What you know,

I know.

My God.

Do not fear me, human.

We share a common enemy.

If those from Mor'Tax
conquer this planet,

both our peoples
will suffer and die.

Do you understand?

Not exactly.

What do your people
have to do with this war?

We come from the
same star system

as those aliens who
invaded the Earth,

but we wish to
preserve humanity.

I must kill the alien leaders,

and without their counsel,
the others will soon die.

You will help me
accomplish this mission.

My power has some...

limitations.

What do you want me to do?

What I ask.

You will tell your people

that I am a friend.

Tell me I don't need
to do this, Norton.

Can't, Doc.

It's been over 24 hours, and
not a word from Ironhorse.

We have to evacuate.

Hi.

I've got to talk to you.

Okay, okay.

Check me out.

I know the drill.

I'm the one that made
the security rules.

I am not an alien.

He's clean.

Thank God you're safe.

We were so worried about you.

You are too cool!

We thought

you were D-E-A-D dead!

Where have you been, huh?

You were right, Harrison.

There are new players.

We are not alone in our
fight against the aliens.

I knew it!

I knew it! It had
to be new aliens.

And who are they?

Peaceful aliens, Norton,

from beyond the stars.

Natural enemies of
the aliens that we're

at war with.

They have sent help to save

Earth from these creatures.

What kind of help?

A friend from another
planet who needs us.

Someone called Katara.

Uh,

just one someone?

Only one is needed to
accomplish this simple task.

Together, we
will kill the aliens.

Excuse me?

Maybe you better
tell us about this,

about how you came to know

about this.

Well, I need to, I... I want to.

But something is

wrong with Katara, and we have

to help her.

She's on our side!

Nothing here, either.

But I know the life signals

of the one from Qar'To
came from over there.

Then we will find her.

What's going on here?

Time for a picture.

Assume position.

Ah, they're okay.

They are gone.

She must be here.

I knew it.

This is it.

We have done very well.

Our enemy is near,

very near.

We have good news, Advocate.

We are here. Speak.

We have located the
Synth assassin from Qar'To.

Then bring it here.

We can not, Advocate.

We are too few in number.

Remain where you are, then.

We will lead this
momentous battle ourselves.

Bring us fresh human bodies.

We also need to prepare
a circuit disabler weapon

to destroy the Synth.

One will be constructed

immediately.

Those bodies should do nicely.

To life immortal.

I'm in a large room...

a very large room...

over water?

Do you know where this is?

Yes, I do.

Good then, Colonel.

You can go to sleep now.

It's possible he
suffered a memory loss

from some kind of
post-hypnotic suggestion,

or a psycho traumatic
experience, but

physically, he's
in top condition.

And he certainly believes
what he's telling us.

Do you?

I want to.

Okay, yes.

So do I.

Now, it's imperative
that we meet this Katara

and give her our help.

What?! She's a killer!

Who's gone out

out of her way not to
harm humans, remember?

Now, we share a common
enemy and a common goal.

She's an intelligent, superior,

highly evolved life-form
from across the galaxy.

And she means us no harm.

I wish I was convinced of that.

Well, Ironhorse is
proof enough for me.

Suzanne, if we could

take what we have learned
about the aliens on Earth

and combine it with
what Katara knows

about them from out there,

we could find the leaders,
and we can kill them.

And then what?

According to what
Katara told the Colonel,

without the advice
of the Advocacy,

the lesser aliens are helpless,

and they'll die.

Breaks my heart.

Yeah, mine, too.

You know something?

I never thought I'd
be able to say this.

I think we're going
to win this war.

All right, Colonel.

Where do we go now?

There she is.

It's the Synth from Qar'To.

Okay. Let's go, Norton.

I will remember her.

The Advocates will be here soon.

She must not escape.

Does any of this look familiar?

This is the place.

Just as you described
it... Over the water.

Going to be the
new fair grounds.

I don't like this, Harrison.

I really don't.

It's all right, Suzanne.

Katara's our friend.

And she needs our help.

We better hurry.

Katara!

These are the friends

that I promised to bring to you.

I am... your friend.

Do not worry,

humans.

Know my power

and believe what I tell you now

as my time here grows short.

That was fantastic!

Damned amazing if you ask me!

But we only came
here to help you. Katara.

Paul said you needed our help.

I do.

I must conserve my energy

until I leave.

Listen carefully now

and remember well my
words when I am gone.

You are at war

with an enemy that
my kind lives to destroy.

They are alien parasites,

an imbalance in this galaxy
that must be exterminated

before they spread.

That's exactly what
we've been trying to do.

And you have done well,

Dr. Harrison Blackwood.

You all have.

I probed your colonel

and saw your
pictures in his mind.

Harrison, she knows our names.

Yes, Suzanne.

And much more.

You have nothing to
fear from me, humans.

I am your friend.

Then why are you leaving us?

To reach your world from mine,

I traveled this space

between the dimensions.

I must return

before that space folds
back on itself again.

Do you understand?

Yes.

At least I think I do.

No matter.

What is important is
that you continue to fight

against your enemies
and do not lose hope.

Fear...

is your worst enemy.

The people of my planet

wish to preserve humanity.

I return reenergized

with another of my kind

inside one Earth year.

When the space folds back again?

Yes, human.

You do understand.

I try.

Where's the fire?

This is unfortunate.

Now you cannot leave.

This structure is surrounded
by those aliens who you fear.

How do you know that?

I can see them by their auras.

I tried to draw the Advocacy

into leaving their
safe hiding place.

But I thought them

too cowardly to respond.

I was wrong.

Well, terrific.

Now what are we going to do?

We're completely
exposed out here.

We've got to try for the
roof to limit the line of fire.

No! It is my directive to
preserve you at all costs.

No human lives may be lost.

You must wait behind there.

Let us try and protect you.

No, I do not need help, human.

Go.

Norton!

Right.

I'm sure glad you gave me
these stick fighting lessons, Norton.

You were a good
student but personally,

I'd prefer a bazooka.

Where the hell did you get that?

Birthday gift from Uncle Hank.

I had a feeling about today.

Here.

We hear her here, Advocate.

Kill her first, and the
humans will be helpless.

So it will be.

Colonel, they're
coming from below.

Norton!

Harrison!

Norton.

Suzanne!

Colonel!

She needs us. Let's go.

I'm right behind you.

Are you all right Suzanne?

What the hell is that?

She's an android.

A robot?

This answers all our questions.

What are you doing?

If your lost life energy

is not replaced,

you will all die.

It's no dream, Suzanne.

I feel great!

I must leave now.

Then let me help you.

I feel your thoughts.

You cannot follow me
into the next dimension.

I don't understand.

Your body is not evolved
to travel the paths I can.

Because you are synthetic?

I will return.

I think this is the beginning
of a beautiful friendship.
