Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958–1961): Season 1, Episode 31 - Bounty for a Bride - full transcript

A decidedly different and dangerous assignment awaits Josh when he agrees to go into the Apache camp and compete in their contests to win the hand of a white woman the Indians kidnapped as a child and have raised as their own.

Take his horse.

Albright?

- You'd be Josh Randall?
- Yes, sir.

- This here's Yanqui Jones.
- How do you do?

You got here quick.

For $1000 I can ride real fast.

I sent for you
because I need a man to do a job.

From your reputation,
you sounded like him.

Now that I've seen you,
I'm convinced of it.

Just what is it you want me to do?

Marry my daughter.

Marry my daughter.

BOUNTY FOR A BRIDE

Yeah, well... I'm sorry but you've
got to get yourself somebody else.

Wait a minute. Hear me out.

this place was raided by Apaches.

They killed my wife and stole
my daughter. She was 3 years old.

She was taken by Victorio
and raised as his daughter.

She doesn't believe
she has a white father.

Victorio?

The war chief of the Apaches.

He's taken white children before
and raised them as his own.

How do you know she's still alive?
It's been 15 years.

I have seen her about a month ago
in Victorio's camp. I spoke with her.

Yanqui's a trader he does business
with Victorio's people.

Why don't you get word to her,
tell her to come on home?

She doesn't want to.

She's a princess with a dozen ponies,

the finest clothes,
slave girls to serve her.

Nothing is denied.
Why would she want to return?

As the daughter of a chief
she's seen the best.

In a few days she must marry.

You want me to walk
into Victorio's camp

and ask that girl to marry me
instead of one of his Indian braves.

- Come on now.
- It must be done now!

During the marriage time.

For 3 days the Apaches are at peace,
even with themselves.

Tribe offers peace.
No fighting till the day.

The only time a white man would stand
a chance of reaching Victorio.

I'm sorry...

Listen, a bunch of Indians together
in one spot kinda scares me.

I don't know about
making love Apache style.

She'll laugh in my face.

I thought of that.
I'll send Yanqui with you.

He knows the people,
he'll tell you what to do and when.

You can trust me, patron.
I will see you win the girl.

I also send four of my best horses
along with two pack animals,

loaded with gifts for Victorio.

I have seen the presents,
they would make an Apache rich

beyond his dreams.

You can find somebody
a lot smarter than me.

I've tried.

I sent two other men,
they never came back.

But that was not the time of peace!

What happens if I don't wanna
get married right now?

The marriage will be Apache,
not legal here.

What if I did marry her,
how I am gonna get her back?

Under the law
she will be your property.

If you come back here,
she must follow.

Mr. Randall...

I'm not very good at it.

I've never done it before.

You wanna see me on my knees?

Alright. You just bought yourself
a son-in-law.

- Is that the way?
- Straight ahead.

We should not have come, patron.

Now you tell me.

- Come on.
- You are going in?

It's not going in I'm afraid of.

Black Horse, one of Victorio's
war chiefs.

Yeah, well, you tell him
we come in peace.

You have already said it, white eyes.

I speak the English tongue.
Why do you come here?

Well, it's a time of peace.
I wish to see Victorio.

- Go back.
- There will be no killing this day!

Why are you here?

- I wanna see the white girl.
- She is called White Antelope.

Yeah, well, I'd like to talk to her.

Go back to the man Albright.

Tell him Victorio's daughter
will never go to him.

You are fortunate, white eyes.

Take the message back
to the Albright man.

I thought this was his time of peace.

Until the sun sets today.

You said 3 days.

I guess I was wrong, patron.

Yeah, I guess you were.

Listen, white eyes,
I'm tired of war.

White Antelope is Apache.
No white man shall take her.

You know she's Albright's daughter.

That is true but does your gun
belong to the man who made it?

But a woman is not property.

That is why White Antelope
shall not be taken from her people.

Unless it is her choice to go.

Albright has sent other men.

Others hunters who wished
to collect the bounty for her return.

Do you wish to join them?

It's time for the girl to marry.

That is true.

One horse is tied
before my tepee now.

An Apache girl has the right
to choose the man she wants.

A white girl may choose
one of her own kind.

You wish to marry White Antelope?

Well, there comes a time
when a man thinks of marriage.

Is it White Antelope you want
or the pay Albright has called?

No matter.
It is for White Antelope to decide.

It's right that she should choose
one of her kind if she wishes.

Black Horse has promised 10 horses,

3 rifles and 2 slave girls
if White Antelope chooses him.

Well, it's a high price.

More than any other suitor
has ever brought her father.

But it will not make up
for the emptiness that will fill

my tepee when she is gone.

I don't know...

It's probably more than she's worth,

but 20 horses, 3 rifles

and 3 wagon-loads of dried corn
instead of the slave girls.

How do I know you will
deliver these gifts?

Victorio, you are an honorable man.
So is Albright.

The promise will be kept
when I return.

!!Within the hour
you may tie your pony

before my tepee
and take part in the games.

It is the time of peace,

and even a white man
will be accepted as a brother.

Until the sun sets today.

If I don't return to Albright's,
the promise won't be kept.

Perhaps seeing you
on the point of a lance

will be worth more than the gifts
you promised.

You are lucky I'm with you.

Without my help
you could have had lots of trouble.

You tell Albright what a good guide I
am, how I helped bring back the girl.

If I get out of this place in
one piece I'll be sure to tell him.

Come on.

What do I do now?

Now you make the love, no?

Tie your horse
in front of White Antelope's tepee.

Then you walk big, like brave.
Like this...

No, I'd look sillier than you do.

It's getting on to noon.
Better get started.

You did not know me?

You look very pretty.

You mean for an Apache?

No, I mean as a woman.

You're not like the other white eyes.

All white men are alike.

At least you're not like the others.

I am sorry I shot at you.

Is the man Albright paying you to
come here and bring me back to him?

He wants you back with him.

That is not an answer.

Your name is Doris Albright.
You don't belong here.

Rather with your own people.

The Indians are my people.

Are they?

Victorio is my father.

The Indians are my brothers.

Albright is your father.

He's got more feeling for you
than this entire Apache tribe.

How would you know?
You came after me only for the money!

You would even marry me to get it.

What are you doing in the clothes
of a white girl?

Because I am a white girl too!

I honestly don't see the point.

Trying to impress a girl
with a foot race.

It is much medicine if you win.
But you won't win.

He knows my people,
he was telling me of them.

This is not good, patron.
Not good at all.

- Well, what comes next?
- You wrestle.

Move fast, if he throws you
from the ring, you lose.

I think Black Horse
will try to kill you instead.

Thanks.

Look out!

White eyes!

- You have chosen?
- I have chosen.

Then go in peace.

Job here for you,
you can stay if you like.

- It wouldn't work out.
- I understand.

Thanks, Mr. Randall.

What are you doing here?

I go where my husband goes.

You can't,
you stay with your father.

You are my husband!

Listen to me.

It would be very pleasant
to be your husband

but my way of life
would only hurt you.

I will share your emptiness.

I can't allow that.

Then I will go back.

That's your decision.

But I'll tell you this.

Although today I can't be your
husband, there's always tomorrow.

Your gentleness has filled my heart
with a memory I will carry always.

Goodbye.
