Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958–1961): Season 1, Episode 13 - Sheriff of Red Rock - full transcript

Josh is bushwhacked by bounty hunters in cahoots with the local sheriff, who now must keep Josh from blowing the whistle on their illegal but lucrative "bounty game."

Take cover!

Hold it.

Let it fall, mister.
Move, and I'll bury you.

THE SHERIFF OF RED ROCK

Well, welcome home, Daniels!

Where did you find him?

Santa Fe.

- Figure on collecting the bounty?
- That's right.

You picked the wrong territory.
We hunt all the bounty here.

My poster says whoever
brings him collects the reward.

Trouble is, you gotta get
him into town to collect.

We're taking him in from here.

You might get the cash
but I'll collect for this

one way or another.

Bounty hunters!

- Buzzards fighting over a carcass!
- Shut up!

You might shut me up but
I'll have my say at the trial.

Anxious to face the jury?

No. But they're
gonna hear about this.

He's right. He could
cause us a lot of trouble.

- Get his horse, we'll let him go.
- What?

You heard me. Get his horse.

Why are you doing this?

I'm giving you a break.

You take it before
we change our minds.

I thought he
meant it. I really did.

That's him, Sheriff. He's the
one who bushwhacked us.

Hey, hold on now!

What's wrong with him?

Ask them, they shot him!

- That's a lie!
- Hold it!

Sit down.

Sit down!

- What's your name?
- Randall. Josh Randall.

Bounty hunter?

That's right.

You jumped them?

No, they jumped me,
couple miles out of town.

- I was bringing Daniels in.
- He's lying!

Quiet.

It's sure that one of you is
lying. You got any witnesses?

Anybody see you
capture the prisoner?

Nope.

I haven't room for all
of you, but I'll hold you.

I'll take that gun
you're wearing.

Stoner, Evans, stay close
to town, you understand?

We'll be around.

In there, you.

Evans, tell the doctor
to come right over.

This is yours.

The doc'll be here soon.

How do you like it, bounty man?

- He'll be all right.
- Thanks, Doc.

I'll have another look
at him in the morning.

Hello, Judge.

- I hear you got Daniels.
- That's right.

The doc was tending to him.

Sam, will he be all
right to stand trial?

I'll have to see him first.

He's not going anywhere.

Well, see you
later, Will. George.

- Can I see him?
- Yes.

Bounty hunter, name of
Randall, brought him in.

Stoner and Evans say he jumped
them and stole Daniels for the reward.

Hello, Daniels. We're holding
your trial tomorrow morning.

Judge, I didn't kill that man.

People saw you with him.
You left the saloon together.

I didn't kill him. But
how am I gonna prove it?

It's the prosecutor's job
to prove that you are guilty.

- Being seen doesn't prove anything.
- Not much.

But breaking out of jail
was a bad thing to do.

The jury'll wonder why
an innocent man ran.

Tomorrow morning at 9, then.

Is that the fellow that
jumped Stoner and Evans?

- What's your name?
- Josh Randall.

I've heard about you.

Nothing especially good.

That won't influence
your opinion!

I run a fair court.
You'll tell your side of it.

Daniels is my witness.

A man on trial for
murder's not a good witness.

He's all I've got. Those
other two men we're lying.

He's right, Judge.

They jumped us
and tried to kill me.

- Anything to that, Will?
- I don't know.

- It's their word against his.
- I see.

But we know Stoner and Evans.
This fellow here is a stranger.

I'll hear both sides
tomorrow morning.

Good day to you, Mr Randall.

I don't stand a chance now.

- I walked into something.
- You won't walk out so easy.

These bounty chasers
been here long?

Oh, about 4 or 5 months.

They killed a rustler who
broke jail for a fat bounty.

Later they killed another one.

The Sheriff has trouble
holding prisoners.

Well, he's getting old.

Counting you, that's 3 jailbreaks in
5 months. Not a very good record.

Another town would
get another sheriff.

Will's held the star so
long folks can't kick him out.

These two bounty chasers, they
collected every time up to now?

Yeah, looks like they'll
get paid this time too.

Not so sure.

When d'you take
to keeping a bottle?

We got a real mess on our hands.

It's your doing. You let
those posters get to Santa Fe.

The circuit marshal took a
handful. What was I supposed to do?

- You could've thought of something.
- Never mind, forget that now.

We got to get rid of them.

No, I told you before,
this is the last one.

Look, Will,

those two start talking in
court, we'll really be in trouble.

Maybe you will but not
me. I didn't do nothing.

You let 3 prisoners break jail,
you split the bounty money with us.

Nobody'll believe you. The 3
men who escaped are dead.

Daniels ain't dead.

He's alive in there.

He'll back up anything I got
to say just to save his own skin.

What do you say, Will?
Just this one last time.

We won't let him get
any farther than the door.

You mean you're gonna
kill the both of them?

Only this time,

you'll be with us when
the shooting starts.

Here's your food, boys.

Don't bother, I'm not hungry.

How about you?

Yeah, I could do with some.

Well, goodnight.

You oughta eat something.

No, I couldn't hold it down.

Randall...

- What's gonna happen tomorrow?
- A trial I guess.

I'll be hanging tomorrow night.

- I don't want to die.
- Take it easy.

- They're not hanging you!
- They might not hang you.

I didn't kill anybody, Randall.
But I'm gonna die for it.

As sure as the sun comes up,
I'll be hanging when it goes down.

Not if you're innocent.

I don't need any judge
with any legal talk to tell me!

I know what's gonna happen!

I don't wanna die, mister!

I don't wanna die!

And I'm not going to!

- Want to come along?
- No.

This isn't gonna help.

They'll hang me anyway.

Daniels, I'd be
careful if I were you.

Now he's gone. Now
we're in real trouble!

Judge Healy?

Who's there?

Forget it.

I want to talk to you and
I haven't got much time.

- Randall! How did you get out?
- The Sheriff opened the door.

It was a set-up for
Daniels and I to escape.

Daniels is dead.

The Sheriff and his
bounty boys were waiting.

- Now hold on...
- You listen.

I spent a lot of time finding
you, you hear me out.

Why did you come here?

It looks like you're the only man
in town who's got some sense.

The Sheriff is working
with Stoner and Evans.

He lets the prisoners escape,
then sends his bird dogs after them.

What do you mean?

The bounty game. The others
collect and split with the Sheriff.

Now you listen. I've
known Will too long.

Can you prove this?

I haven't got all night to
argue. Remember what I said.

They'll be after me soon.

- And they'll get you.
- Maybe.

I don't plan on staying
wanted. I'll be back.

Either slung over a horse or
with enough proof to settle this.

Hold it!

Randall!

You leave me
alone, I'll clear out!

- You hear me?
- Hold it!

Don't try it, you're
not that fast.

Please, Randall. Please!

Come on. We're
going to Red Rock.

Are you asking me to believe
Will had a part in this scheme?

It was Evans' idea, but the
Sheriff didn't say no to the money.

It was him and Evans. I didn't
have no part in the shooting.

You're a liar! You shot Daniels
when I was bringing him in.

Evans made me do it.

How can I be sure he isn't dragging
Will into this to take the blame?

They couldn't go after a man
unless the Sheriff set him free.

I want to talk to Will.

There must be
another side to this.

See you got the bounty hunter!

Stoner bring him in?

- I want to talk.
- Talk from there.

This man says you're
mixed up in a bounty game.

There must be an explanation.

What do you want me to say?

Is it true?

Not much point in lying.

Yeah, it's true.

Which one of you's gonna get me?

I stood up to this town's
troubles for 17 years.

Nobody man enough
to make a move now?

Will, don't...

I just wanted to tell him
his friends'd go easy on him.
