Tiny House Hunters (2014–…): Season 2, Episode 3 - Moving from Parents Place to Tiny House - full transcript
Across the nation,
people are going small--
really small...
These are so cute!
...buying tiny houses,
some just a microscopic
100 square feet.
Whoa.
This is a tiny house.
It looks really small.
This tiny trend
is picking up big steam,
with everything from
converted train cars and barns
to yurts
and microhouses on wheels.
I'd be a gypsy
on the run.
It seems
a little top-heavy here.
California newlyweds
Eric and Anna
are looking to get out
of her parents' place
and into a tiny home
of their own.
Oh, my gosh,
this is outstanding.
The dishwasher
is a little small.
We are in a tiny house,
so you're lucky
to have a dishwasher at all.
But will the reality
of downsizing
be too much for them?
I feel like
I'm in a '70s casino elevator.
These stairs
are really narrow.
Yeah,
it's a little steep.
The bathroom is right
in the kitchen area.
This is tight.
Could it be an office?
Yeah.
Um, no.
- It's so beautiful today.
- Yeah.
I mean, it's a perfect day
for wine tasting.
Anna, who owns
a health and wellness business,
and her husband, Eric,
a former marine turned
fundraising consultant,
have been married
for six months.
Oh, my goodness, that is so...
- Isn't that good?
- That's so wonderful.
- I know.
It took me a second
to detect the...
They live in Carmel Valley,
about 15 miles east of Monterey
on California's
scenic central coast.
I love it here.
I love the art.
I love the beaches.
It's beautiful
everywhere you go.
What's not to love here?
Well, there may be one thing.
You need to put
on your kettle?
We're dancing here.
We currently live
at my parents' house.
It's very crowded.
It's cramped.
Could you get some cream
from the refrigerator?
- It's time to move.
- Yeah.
It's time to have
a place of our own.
Our budget is $55,000.
The area around here
is pretty prohibitively priced
as far as owning anything.
If they want to own
and stay in Carmel,
where the median home price
is around $1 million,
their best option is to go tiny.
There are some
practical reasons
why you would want to get
a tiny home
that really resonated
with me--
the low cost
for a tiny home,
plus throughout all the time
in the Marine Corps
and going to Iraq,
there was a lot of living
out of my pack,
living out of Humvees.
I'm comfortable living lean.
The beauty of the tiny house
and the tiny house lifestyle
is living simply.
That's gonna make
all the difference.
Right now, you're at the scene
of the future tiny home.
Where we're gonna place our home
is a really beautiful spot
on my parents' property.
It's a little small.
In fact,
the lot is only big enough
for a tiny home
of under 400 square feet,
but it's a lot more appealing
than their current
living situation.
- I'm right here.
- I'm up.
I'm coming over there.
This is my bedroom.
The bed only has enough space
for one person.
For right now,
I'm in the other room.
It's disappointing.
I mean, I want to wake up
in the morning to my husband.
That's really important,
that we have a bedroom,
and one that fits
a king-sized bed.
They'd also like
ample office space,
since both of them
work from home.
I need to be
able to swing around
so that I feel
not too cramped.
This one's
kind of funky-looking.
I do like the modern style.
The modern style, for me,
lifts my mood up.
I like white walls
because it's a lot brighter,
as opposed
to the cabin design.
I see a lot of tiny homes
are cabin-looking.
I don't want that at all.
I prefer the cozy-cottage
look and feel
because to me,
that's more homey.
There you go.
Oh, that looks so nice.
We'd like all the modern
conveniences, upgraded,
granite countertops,
all white cabinetry.
That's what I want exactly.
Here, I got your bag
right here.
So, as we searched for a place
to get a tiny home,
we found that the type of home
that we want
can be found in Portland.
So, they're taking a trip
up to Oregon
to find a tiny house
they can buy
and have shipped down
to Carmel.
I really like how in Oregon,
it just seems like this Mecca
for tiny homes.
We have a reservation
for Young.
I'm looking forward
- to just seeing what's possible.
- The tiny house buffet?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Helping them on the hunt
is Portland real-estate agent
Chandra Ashford.
The tiny market
in Oregon is booming.
You know, there's a joke
about how people
come to Portland to retire,
but I think actually
they come here to start
small, weird businesses,
and I think tiny homes
is part of that.
Chandra's starting off
their tiny search
with this cottage-style place.
At just 393 square feet,
six of these cottages could fit
into the average American home.
Oh, I like the windows.
I know it's not exactly as
modern as you were looking for,
but what do you think?
It seems
a little cabin-ish.
It almost looks like
a train caboose.
Here's the thing about this one.
It's $37,000.
- What?
- Wow.
So, you guys could change
- the style really easily.
- Yeah, you can.
And it'll survive
on the road?
The skirting
comes right off,
and you can hitch it up
within two hours
and get it on the road
- to Carmel.
- Okay.
Whoa, the stairs are right here
in my face.
Okay.
This is a queen bed
in here.
I know you wanted to try to fit
a king in.
I'm not sure if you can
in this room. Maybe.
Let's find out.
Can you take that to the wall?
Sure.
Yeah, I think we could probably
fit a king in here.
It might be
a little bit tighter,
but I think
we should be okay.
I mean, how much space
will we have to walk?
I don't think much.
You're probably gonna
have to kind of climb around.
Okay, yeah.
- This is big.
- This is pretty big.
I'm imagining us in here
brushing our teeth together.
Can you put your arm out?
Let's see how it would go.
Yeah, we could be in here
together and be fine.
One thing
I do want to point out,
the bathroom is right
in the kitchen area,
So there is much... I see that.
And so opening up
the refrigerator,
and you're coming
out of the bathroom.
Babe, I'm trying to come
into my room.
I don't know
if that's gonna work.
Yeah, I don't like that.
But it is a nice kitchen.
Even though it's a little bit
thin right here,
it's kind of a tight hallway.
It's a little tight.
If I'm at the sink,
if you walked behind me,
how would that be?
You would have to adjust.
You would have to--
Okay.
Plenty of storage,
which is nice.
I mean, I know it's not white
like you wanted.
Oh, I didn't even
notice that.
Now that you've said that,
I can't not see it.
I have to have
white cabinets.
But keep in mind,
you guys.
This is $37,000,
so anything
you want to change out, ANNA: You're right.
you can afford
- to change out here.
- Right, exactly.
And then it opens up
into the living-room space.
It's spacious,
and I like the tall ceilings.
- Is that the loft?
- This is the loft, yes.
Ooh, these stairs
are really narrow.
Yep, it's a little steep,
but it is extra space.
Oh, okay.
This has got a lot of space.
It's shallow.
Let's see
what we got here.
It's about
46 inches.
Okay.
Office, home office?
Possibly. I guess
if I'm sitting like this.
Would that work for you?
Every time you want to get up,
- you can't stand up.
- No.
It is short.
I can move around easily,
and I pride myself
on being able to maneuver
tight spaces.
Working is going to be
pleasantly challenging.
You'll just have to get creative
up here, you know?
- It is a usable space.
- Yeah, I think it's a matter...
Yeah.... giving it a chance,
so we'll see.
- So, what do you think?
- It feels pretty cozy.
I know one thing for sure.
I would want to remodel
that entire kitchen.
Well, you have money in
the budget to do those things.
It has all of
the components that we want,
but I'm just not 100% sure
that the style
is quite as modern
as I was hoping to see.
So, Chandra's found something
she thinks Eric will like.
So, yeah, this opens.
- Morning.
- Oh, neat.
This is gonna fit a king,
for sure.
Hopefully the king
doesn't fall out.
You might want to put
a net right there.
How are you doing?
Newlyweds Eric and Anna
have been living
in separate bedrooms
at her parents' place
in Carmel Valley, California.
It's not very romantic.
It's challenging.
It's hard to be romantic
when you're talking like this
from the other side
of the room.
So, they're visiting the Mecca
of all things tiny,
Portland, Oregon,
in search of a tiny home
that's within
their $55,000 budget.
So far, they've seen
a 393-square-foot cottage.
Anna liked the style,
but Eric couldn't stand up
in the office.
Today, their agent, Chandra,
is showing them a place
that she hopes will work better
for Eric.
It's cool, isn't it?
Yeah.
Definitely a lot more modern.
It seems
a little top-heavy here.
It seems a little bit--
It does seem
a little top-heavy.
It is smaller
than yesterday's.
It's 204 square feet.
- Okay, that's really small.
- About half.
But you're gonna be
pleasantly surprised.
It packs a punch.
This builder's base model
is $51,000.
- That's good.
- Oh, that's good.
That's reasonable.
But the one we're looking at
today is $74,000.
- What?
- Yeah.
Why is there
such a difference?
Well, you'll see
when we get inside.
There's a lot
of custom features.
Whoa, look at this.
Wild design.
Whoa, this is beautiful.
Look at the chandelier.
Very interesting.
Reclaimed
from an old house.
We have reclaimed cedar,
and then these floors,
this was taken out of another
house, and it was in a fire,
so some of the black
is actually burned.
- Oh, are you serious?
- Yeah.
I like the back over here.
- Is this storage?
- Storage, uh-huh.
Oh, neat.
So, as far as the wood goes,
I like the design.
It is kind of dark in here,
a little bit too woody,
so I'd probably
want to paint it.
I can't believe
that he would want to paint
this recycled wood
that was hand-milled
and given a second life.
This is part of, actually,
the upgrades.
If you are wanting to do
the more base model,
this would all be Sheetrock.
Oh, okay, so it would be
the white walls.
- It would be white walls, yeah.
- Drywall.
I was actually thinking
that up here would be
a really good office space
for you.
Okay. This is tight.
What do you think about--
Could it be an office?
Yeah.
Um, no, this would definitely
be storage.
We could make it work.
The additional loft, to me,
is a storage unit, period.
Interesting heater.
It's actually
off of a ship.
I've read a lot about these,
and they're really economical.
They last forever, and it can
heat the whole place up.
The copper backsplash
is really cool,
and the exposed pipe
is also kind of
a steam-punk aesthetic,
which is fun.
However, that is an upgrade.
This countertop is great.
It's thick wood.
Not the stone,
not the granite that I want,
but it is quite beautiful.
And then we go
into the bathroom.
Wow.
The copper backsplash
is pretty cool, isn't it?
It's very cool, and this is--
I love this sink.
I actually don't like
the copper siding at all.
I feel like
I'm in a '70s casino elevator.
The base model
wouldn't have this.
It would just be
the Sheetrock.
Sold.
Access to the loft bedroom is up
a narrow flight of stairs.
I would fall.
Yeah, this is definitely
a lunge.
Getting inside of
the master bedroom
is something that I can do,
given that I'm into fitness
and that I can contort myself.
Oh, how cool.
So, yeah, this opens.
Oh, how neat.
Oh, that's cool.
Yeah, so this is gonna fit
a king, for sure,
and this is how
you would get it up there.
Hopefully, the king
doesn't fall out.
You might want to put
a net right there.
As the ceiling slopes down
towards this more shallow end,
it'd feel
a lot more cramped.
Well, that's definitely
where your feet would go.
True.
I actually really love it.
I love the two lofts.
The unique features
are so cool
that I think
we should spring for 'em.
I'm definitely more inclined
towards the base model
with the drywall.
It's cramped.
I mean, it's half the square
footage that we wanted.
So now Chandra's
lined up a bigger tiny home--
maybe too big.
- Whoa.
- This is a monstrosity.
I'm down with that.
That's a tiny house right there.
That's a super-tiny house.
Former marine, Eric,
and his wife, Anna,
are in Portland, Oregon,
looking to buy
a place of their own.
The plan is to move
their new tiny home
to her parents' backyard
in Carmel Valley, California.
So far, they've seen
a 393-square-foot home
with a great price.
On the downside, no one
could stand up in the office,
and the bathroom was right next
to the refrigerator.
Next was a much smaller place
that was completely customized
with reclaimed wood
and copper upgrades,
but Eric thought
the wood walls were too dark,
and it wasn't within
their $55,000 budget.
Now, on the last day in town,
they're seeing another option.
Whoa.
Wow.
This looks huge.
This is a monstrosity.
You said yesterday's
- was a little too small.
- Slightly.
He wants modern.
She wants cozy.
It's kind of difficult
to make those two match,
however, I think
this particular house
has a lot of
what they're looking for.
How big is this?
This guy's actually
400 square feet.
The big question
is the lot.
This house, if we were to take
this one, would be a tight fit.
The spot that we have designated
for the tiny house
that we end up buying
would be pretty much taxed.
I like the colors.
It's definitely
a modern color scheme.
It's got that cottage look,
especially
with this angled roof.
I like that.
So, I have to ask,
how much is this... this thing?
Well, it is
slightly out of budget.
$62,000.
Well, that's not slight.
That's a decent amount
outside of our budget.
I know, but I hope
it's worth it on the inside.
Wow!
Nice!
Oh, my gosh,
- this is outstanding.
- Whoa.
When I walk inside this house,
I feel like a princess
in a tiny house.
It's like a tiny mansion.
What color
do we have here, huh?
The white cabinets
that I've been wanting.
It does seem like the kitchen
is kind of dominating
the entire house.
You're right.
Where would you fit a--
This is our dining room
- right here.
- A dining room table, yeah.
But on the plus side,
look at this nice, big,
full-sized refrigerator, huh?
- That's nice.
- Wonderful size.
Yeah, this is large.
The dishwasher
is a little small.
We are in a tiny house,
so you're lucky to have
- a dishwasher at all.
- True, I know.
I have to keep
reminding myself of that.
The wood floor,
in contrast, is good.
Adds a little bit
of character,
but you know,
I'm feeling like--
And I know I've been
talking about the white.
It's feeling a little bit
too white.
It's feeling
almost blinding.
I'm not sure
if a couch would fit there.
It looks a little small.
Anna and Eric
need to remember
that they're looking
at tiny houses.
They want a lot of space,
but tiny houses
don't have a lot of space.
Bathroom, it's not for two.
It does feel small.
We definitely both
couldn't brush our teeth
in here at the same time.
You want a tiny house,
and you want a full bathroom.
Here it is.
And will the king
fit in here?
Oh, it sinks down. Small.
Do you think a king-sized bed
would fit?
I mean, this is...
You might be doing this
in the morning.
At least
you're not hitting your head
as you're getting out of bed.
But the king-sized bed
- has got to fit in there.
- Yeah.
Up the stairs.
Up the stairs.
This is kind of shallow.
A little shallow, but at least
the living room's kind of sunk.
Yeah, that's nice.
It's got this sunken area.
And would this work
for an office space?
I don't think
I'd want my office up here.
You could be up here.
Low chairs.
You're gonna be
kind of like...
It just wouldn't be
totally comfortable.
I love a lot about it.
The white,
I think I got what I asked for,
a little bit too much.
I mean, it's like
screaming white inside.
Here's what
I'm thinking about, though.
Getting into the property itself,
it's gonna have to be
backed in
by a semi truck
- in a horseshoe fashion.
- That's right.
I don't know
how this one might work.
And that's definitely something
for you to consider.
After seeing several tiny homes,
it's decision time
for Eric and Anna.
There just seems like there's
a lot of risks with this house.
Our house hunters
are upgrading to tiny houses.
Could you live in something
this small?
Here, hand me that yellow cup
so I can get me some coffee.
Newlyweds Anna and Eric
have been living
at her parents' house
in Carmel Valley, California,
while they hunt for a tiny home
of their own.
They've traveled
to Portland, Oregon,
and have seen several places
within and beyond
their $55,000 budget.
Now they have to decide
which one to buy
and have shipped down
to California.
- Too much.
- Ooh.
What are you thinking
on the beige one?
This home
was just 393 square feet
and is priced well under budget
at just $37,000.
The price
is really attractive
because we could do
whatever we want.
I mean, we could remodel
- the kitchen.
- Sure.
That one,
of all the homes that we saw,
had by far,
the biggest bathroom.
I think that the upstairs
could potentially be a place
where I could do work.
It is kind of short,
but most of my work,
I'm doing with a laptop,
and I'm sitting.
What about the custom house?
At $74,000,
this home was the smallest
at just 204 square feet.
I was actually surprised by
all the character that it had.
Exposed copper piping.
Even the copper walls
makes it really unique.
The base price, the $51,000,
I like because I would like
more drywall.
But why would you
want to cover up the wood?
It had this beautiful look
to it.
To me, it felt dark.
So, what about
the biggest house?
At 400 square feet,
this tiny home could max out
their parents' lot,
and at $62,000,
it's over budget.
The house is big.
I'm not complaining, necessarily,
about it being so big.
I simply don't think
it's gonna fit.
What about the huge kitchen?
Well, I liked the big kitchen.
Kind of the focal point.
It is nice that this one
had the separate spaces upstairs
in the loft area
that could be an office area.
Bedroom is cramped,
and I'm not sure
how a king-sized bed
would fit in there.
If it did, it'd probably be
with inches to spare.
There just seems like there's
a lot of risks with this house.
Big decision to make.
I'm thinking that the beige
house, it doesn't do it for me.
Like, it really, really
- doesn't do it for you?
- Yeah.
Unfortunately,
I don't feel it.
I think that one's out.
That leaves the big one
and the small custom.
The small custom, too tight.
I really love that house,
but it's gonna feel
like a large closet,
and we're gonna be sort of
on top of each other,
and that could test
our marriage.
Yeah.
I'm feeling good
about the big one,
and I'm kind of
feeling lucky
with as far as bringing it
down here.
From the moment I saw it,
I had the best feeling.
It's pretty modern,
stainless-steel appliances,
and I like the size.
So, are we gonna do this?
The choice is clear.
We're getting the big one.
- Oh, my gosh.
- Yeah,
we're getting the big one.
- Yes.
- I like that one the most.
Ooh, strawberries
with the brownies,
that's gonna be so good.
We've been moved in now
for a couple weeks.
We ended up paying $65,000,
including $3,000 for delivery.
Getting this house
into this spot is quite a story.
Tires blew out 100 miles
out from the factory
because of the sheer weight
of the building.
Axle was done.
They had to bring out
a whole new setup.
It finally got down here.
Getting the house
up their narrow driveway
and onto the property
was also problematic.
The driver just said,
"This isn't gonna happen."
And I basically got in his face
in a polite way and said,
"You're gonna drive this thing
to the house."
I had a 25-foot pole lifting up
a 300-pound branch.
People are looking at us.
The driver's sweating,
and they're ripping
the fence down
that has been here
for probably decades.
It was insane.
When the driver got the model
into the yard,
we did a little chest bump,
and everybody was high-fiving.
Anna's starting to break down
into tears in the corner.
I started to cry.
I couldn't believe
that it made it and it's here.
So far on the outside
of the home,
they've added
a redwood deck and a sign.
This tiny house is so colossal,
it needs a name.
We ended up with Tiny Titan.
And it's perfect.
Feels good to be
in a big kitchen now.
I know.
I love the kitchen.
White cabinets,
granite countertops.
It just has everything.
So, this looks good.
Yeah, that looks cozy.
I'm okay with the bedroom.
It's a very tight fit,
I must say.
What's more worth it is that
we don't have a wall between us.
That's good enough for me.
Hey, I just got off the phone
with Robert.
Apparently, we're gonna do
the product launch.
The office,
so far, it's worked out.
I've had to do
my ninja walk.
It's pretty scaled down,
but functional.
It's the tea set.
I had a lot of stuff
in storage,
and I've had to part
with quite a bit of it.
It's been challenging,
but it's been freeing, as well.
Gosh, what's not to love
about this house?
I think it's got
just about everything.
It's nice to have
our own spot.
We're here on my parents'
beautiful property.
I love living here.
We love it.
We're so happy.
I think this is quite fitting
for our tiny house.
people are going small--
really small...
These are so cute!
...buying tiny houses,
some just a microscopic
100 square feet.
Whoa.
This is a tiny house.
It looks really small.
This tiny trend
is picking up big steam,
with everything from
converted train cars and barns
to yurts
and microhouses on wheels.
I'd be a gypsy
on the run.
It seems
a little top-heavy here.
California newlyweds
Eric and Anna
are looking to get out
of her parents' place
and into a tiny home
of their own.
Oh, my gosh,
this is outstanding.
The dishwasher
is a little small.
We are in a tiny house,
so you're lucky
to have a dishwasher at all.
But will the reality
of downsizing
be too much for them?
I feel like
I'm in a '70s casino elevator.
These stairs
are really narrow.
Yeah,
it's a little steep.
The bathroom is right
in the kitchen area.
This is tight.
Could it be an office?
Yeah.
Um, no.
- It's so beautiful today.
- Yeah.
I mean, it's a perfect day
for wine tasting.
Anna, who owns
a health and wellness business,
and her husband, Eric,
a former marine turned
fundraising consultant,
have been married
for six months.
Oh, my goodness, that is so...
- Isn't that good?
- That's so wonderful.
- I know.
It took me a second
to detect the...
They live in Carmel Valley,
about 15 miles east of Monterey
on California's
scenic central coast.
I love it here.
I love the art.
I love the beaches.
It's beautiful
everywhere you go.
What's not to love here?
Well, there may be one thing.
You need to put
on your kettle?
We're dancing here.
We currently live
at my parents' house.
It's very crowded.
It's cramped.
Could you get some cream
from the refrigerator?
- It's time to move.
- Yeah.
It's time to have
a place of our own.
Our budget is $55,000.
The area around here
is pretty prohibitively priced
as far as owning anything.
If they want to own
and stay in Carmel,
where the median home price
is around $1 million,
their best option is to go tiny.
There are some
practical reasons
why you would want to get
a tiny home
that really resonated
with me--
the low cost
for a tiny home,
plus throughout all the time
in the Marine Corps
and going to Iraq,
there was a lot of living
out of my pack,
living out of Humvees.
I'm comfortable living lean.
The beauty of the tiny house
and the tiny house lifestyle
is living simply.
That's gonna make
all the difference.
Right now, you're at the scene
of the future tiny home.
Where we're gonna place our home
is a really beautiful spot
on my parents' property.
It's a little small.
In fact,
the lot is only big enough
for a tiny home
of under 400 square feet,
but it's a lot more appealing
than their current
living situation.
- I'm right here.
- I'm up.
I'm coming over there.
This is my bedroom.
The bed only has enough space
for one person.
For right now,
I'm in the other room.
It's disappointing.
I mean, I want to wake up
in the morning to my husband.
That's really important,
that we have a bedroom,
and one that fits
a king-sized bed.
They'd also like
ample office space,
since both of them
work from home.
I need to be
able to swing around
so that I feel
not too cramped.
This one's
kind of funky-looking.
I do like the modern style.
The modern style, for me,
lifts my mood up.
I like white walls
because it's a lot brighter,
as opposed
to the cabin design.
I see a lot of tiny homes
are cabin-looking.
I don't want that at all.
I prefer the cozy-cottage
look and feel
because to me,
that's more homey.
There you go.
Oh, that looks so nice.
We'd like all the modern
conveniences, upgraded,
granite countertops,
all white cabinetry.
That's what I want exactly.
Here, I got your bag
right here.
So, as we searched for a place
to get a tiny home,
we found that the type of home
that we want
can be found in Portland.
So, they're taking a trip
up to Oregon
to find a tiny house
they can buy
and have shipped down
to Carmel.
I really like how in Oregon,
it just seems like this Mecca
for tiny homes.
We have a reservation
for Young.
I'm looking forward
- to just seeing what's possible.
- The tiny house buffet?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Helping them on the hunt
is Portland real-estate agent
Chandra Ashford.
The tiny market
in Oregon is booming.
You know, there's a joke
about how people
come to Portland to retire,
but I think actually
they come here to start
small, weird businesses,
and I think tiny homes
is part of that.
Chandra's starting off
their tiny search
with this cottage-style place.
At just 393 square feet,
six of these cottages could fit
into the average American home.
Oh, I like the windows.
I know it's not exactly as
modern as you were looking for,
but what do you think?
It seems
a little cabin-ish.
It almost looks like
a train caboose.
Here's the thing about this one.
It's $37,000.
- What?
- Wow.
So, you guys could change
- the style really easily.
- Yeah, you can.
And it'll survive
on the road?
The skirting
comes right off,
and you can hitch it up
within two hours
and get it on the road
- to Carmel.
- Okay.
Whoa, the stairs are right here
in my face.
Okay.
This is a queen bed
in here.
I know you wanted to try to fit
a king in.
I'm not sure if you can
in this room. Maybe.
Let's find out.
Can you take that to the wall?
Sure.
Yeah, I think we could probably
fit a king in here.
It might be
a little bit tighter,
but I think
we should be okay.
I mean, how much space
will we have to walk?
I don't think much.
You're probably gonna
have to kind of climb around.
Okay, yeah.
- This is big.
- This is pretty big.
I'm imagining us in here
brushing our teeth together.
Can you put your arm out?
Let's see how it would go.
Yeah, we could be in here
together and be fine.
One thing
I do want to point out,
the bathroom is right
in the kitchen area,
So there is much... I see that.
And so opening up
the refrigerator,
and you're coming
out of the bathroom.
Babe, I'm trying to come
into my room.
I don't know
if that's gonna work.
Yeah, I don't like that.
But it is a nice kitchen.
Even though it's a little bit
thin right here,
it's kind of a tight hallway.
It's a little tight.
If I'm at the sink,
if you walked behind me,
how would that be?
You would have to adjust.
You would have to--
Okay.
Plenty of storage,
which is nice.
I mean, I know it's not white
like you wanted.
Oh, I didn't even
notice that.
Now that you've said that,
I can't not see it.
I have to have
white cabinets.
But keep in mind,
you guys.
This is $37,000,
so anything
you want to change out, ANNA: You're right.
you can afford
- to change out here.
- Right, exactly.
And then it opens up
into the living-room space.
It's spacious,
and I like the tall ceilings.
- Is that the loft?
- This is the loft, yes.
Ooh, these stairs
are really narrow.
Yep, it's a little steep,
but it is extra space.
Oh, okay.
This has got a lot of space.
It's shallow.
Let's see
what we got here.
It's about
46 inches.
Okay.
Office, home office?
Possibly. I guess
if I'm sitting like this.
Would that work for you?
Every time you want to get up,
- you can't stand up.
- No.
It is short.
I can move around easily,
and I pride myself
on being able to maneuver
tight spaces.
Working is going to be
pleasantly challenging.
You'll just have to get creative
up here, you know?
- It is a usable space.
- Yeah, I think it's a matter...
Yeah.... giving it a chance,
so we'll see.
- So, what do you think?
- It feels pretty cozy.
I know one thing for sure.
I would want to remodel
that entire kitchen.
Well, you have money in
the budget to do those things.
It has all of
the components that we want,
but I'm just not 100% sure
that the style
is quite as modern
as I was hoping to see.
So, Chandra's found something
she thinks Eric will like.
So, yeah, this opens.
- Morning.
- Oh, neat.
This is gonna fit a king,
for sure.
Hopefully the king
doesn't fall out.
You might want to put
a net right there.
How are you doing?
Newlyweds Eric and Anna
have been living
in separate bedrooms
at her parents' place
in Carmel Valley, California.
It's not very romantic.
It's challenging.
It's hard to be romantic
when you're talking like this
from the other side
of the room.
So, they're visiting the Mecca
of all things tiny,
Portland, Oregon,
in search of a tiny home
that's within
their $55,000 budget.
So far, they've seen
a 393-square-foot cottage.
Anna liked the style,
but Eric couldn't stand up
in the office.
Today, their agent, Chandra,
is showing them a place
that she hopes will work better
for Eric.
It's cool, isn't it?
Yeah.
Definitely a lot more modern.
It seems
a little top-heavy here.
It seems a little bit--
It does seem
a little top-heavy.
It is smaller
than yesterday's.
It's 204 square feet.
- Okay, that's really small.
- About half.
But you're gonna be
pleasantly surprised.
It packs a punch.
This builder's base model
is $51,000.
- That's good.
- Oh, that's good.
That's reasonable.
But the one we're looking at
today is $74,000.
- What?
- Yeah.
Why is there
such a difference?
Well, you'll see
when we get inside.
There's a lot
of custom features.
Whoa, look at this.
Wild design.
Whoa, this is beautiful.
Look at the chandelier.
Very interesting.
Reclaimed
from an old house.
We have reclaimed cedar,
and then these floors,
this was taken out of another
house, and it was in a fire,
so some of the black
is actually burned.
- Oh, are you serious?
- Yeah.
I like the back over here.
- Is this storage?
- Storage, uh-huh.
Oh, neat.
So, as far as the wood goes,
I like the design.
It is kind of dark in here,
a little bit too woody,
so I'd probably
want to paint it.
I can't believe
that he would want to paint
this recycled wood
that was hand-milled
and given a second life.
This is part of, actually,
the upgrades.
If you are wanting to do
the more base model,
this would all be Sheetrock.
Oh, okay, so it would be
the white walls.
- It would be white walls, yeah.
- Drywall.
I was actually thinking
that up here would be
a really good office space
for you.
Okay. This is tight.
What do you think about--
Could it be an office?
Yeah.
Um, no, this would definitely
be storage.
We could make it work.
The additional loft, to me,
is a storage unit, period.
Interesting heater.
It's actually
off of a ship.
I've read a lot about these,
and they're really economical.
They last forever, and it can
heat the whole place up.
The copper backsplash
is really cool,
and the exposed pipe
is also kind of
a steam-punk aesthetic,
which is fun.
However, that is an upgrade.
This countertop is great.
It's thick wood.
Not the stone,
not the granite that I want,
but it is quite beautiful.
And then we go
into the bathroom.
Wow.
The copper backsplash
is pretty cool, isn't it?
It's very cool, and this is--
I love this sink.
I actually don't like
the copper siding at all.
I feel like
I'm in a '70s casino elevator.
The base model
wouldn't have this.
It would just be
the Sheetrock.
Sold.
Access to the loft bedroom is up
a narrow flight of stairs.
I would fall.
Yeah, this is definitely
a lunge.
Getting inside of
the master bedroom
is something that I can do,
given that I'm into fitness
and that I can contort myself.
Oh, how cool.
So, yeah, this opens.
Oh, how neat.
Oh, that's cool.
Yeah, so this is gonna fit
a king, for sure,
and this is how
you would get it up there.
Hopefully, the king
doesn't fall out.
You might want to put
a net right there.
As the ceiling slopes down
towards this more shallow end,
it'd feel
a lot more cramped.
Well, that's definitely
where your feet would go.
True.
I actually really love it.
I love the two lofts.
The unique features
are so cool
that I think
we should spring for 'em.
I'm definitely more inclined
towards the base model
with the drywall.
It's cramped.
I mean, it's half the square
footage that we wanted.
So now Chandra's
lined up a bigger tiny home--
maybe too big.
- Whoa.
- This is a monstrosity.
I'm down with that.
That's a tiny house right there.
That's a super-tiny house.
Former marine, Eric,
and his wife, Anna,
are in Portland, Oregon,
looking to buy
a place of their own.
The plan is to move
their new tiny home
to her parents' backyard
in Carmel Valley, California.
So far, they've seen
a 393-square-foot home
with a great price.
On the downside, no one
could stand up in the office,
and the bathroom was right next
to the refrigerator.
Next was a much smaller place
that was completely customized
with reclaimed wood
and copper upgrades,
but Eric thought
the wood walls were too dark,
and it wasn't within
their $55,000 budget.
Now, on the last day in town,
they're seeing another option.
Whoa.
Wow.
This looks huge.
This is a monstrosity.
You said yesterday's
- was a little too small.
- Slightly.
He wants modern.
She wants cozy.
It's kind of difficult
to make those two match,
however, I think
this particular house
has a lot of
what they're looking for.
How big is this?
This guy's actually
400 square feet.
The big question
is the lot.
This house, if we were to take
this one, would be a tight fit.
The spot that we have designated
for the tiny house
that we end up buying
would be pretty much taxed.
I like the colors.
It's definitely
a modern color scheme.
It's got that cottage look,
especially
with this angled roof.
I like that.
So, I have to ask,
how much is this... this thing?
Well, it is
slightly out of budget.
$62,000.
Well, that's not slight.
That's a decent amount
outside of our budget.
I know, but I hope
it's worth it on the inside.
Wow!
Nice!
Oh, my gosh,
- this is outstanding.
- Whoa.
When I walk inside this house,
I feel like a princess
in a tiny house.
It's like a tiny mansion.
What color
do we have here, huh?
The white cabinets
that I've been wanting.
It does seem like the kitchen
is kind of dominating
the entire house.
You're right.
Where would you fit a--
This is our dining room
- right here.
- A dining room table, yeah.
But on the plus side,
look at this nice, big,
full-sized refrigerator, huh?
- That's nice.
- Wonderful size.
Yeah, this is large.
The dishwasher
is a little small.
We are in a tiny house,
so you're lucky to have
- a dishwasher at all.
- True, I know.
I have to keep
reminding myself of that.
The wood floor,
in contrast, is good.
Adds a little bit
of character,
but you know,
I'm feeling like--
And I know I've been
talking about the white.
It's feeling a little bit
too white.
It's feeling
almost blinding.
I'm not sure
if a couch would fit there.
It looks a little small.
Anna and Eric
need to remember
that they're looking
at tiny houses.
They want a lot of space,
but tiny houses
don't have a lot of space.
Bathroom, it's not for two.
It does feel small.
We definitely both
couldn't brush our teeth
in here at the same time.
You want a tiny house,
and you want a full bathroom.
Here it is.
And will the king
fit in here?
Oh, it sinks down. Small.
Do you think a king-sized bed
would fit?
I mean, this is...
You might be doing this
in the morning.
At least
you're not hitting your head
as you're getting out of bed.
But the king-sized bed
- has got to fit in there.
- Yeah.
Up the stairs.
Up the stairs.
This is kind of shallow.
A little shallow, but at least
the living room's kind of sunk.
Yeah, that's nice.
It's got this sunken area.
And would this work
for an office space?
I don't think
I'd want my office up here.
You could be up here.
Low chairs.
You're gonna be
kind of like...
It just wouldn't be
totally comfortable.
I love a lot about it.
The white,
I think I got what I asked for,
a little bit too much.
I mean, it's like
screaming white inside.
Here's what
I'm thinking about, though.
Getting into the property itself,
it's gonna have to be
backed in
by a semi truck
- in a horseshoe fashion.
- That's right.
I don't know
how this one might work.
And that's definitely something
for you to consider.
After seeing several tiny homes,
it's decision time
for Eric and Anna.
There just seems like there's
a lot of risks with this house.
Our house hunters
are upgrading to tiny houses.
Could you live in something
this small?
Here, hand me that yellow cup
so I can get me some coffee.
Newlyweds Anna and Eric
have been living
at her parents' house
in Carmel Valley, California,
while they hunt for a tiny home
of their own.
They've traveled
to Portland, Oregon,
and have seen several places
within and beyond
their $55,000 budget.
Now they have to decide
which one to buy
and have shipped down
to California.
- Too much.
- Ooh.
What are you thinking
on the beige one?
This home
was just 393 square feet
and is priced well under budget
at just $37,000.
The price
is really attractive
because we could do
whatever we want.
I mean, we could remodel
- the kitchen.
- Sure.
That one,
of all the homes that we saw,
had by far,
the biggest bathroom.
I think that the upstairs
could potentially be a place
where I could do work.
It is kind of short,
but most of my work,
I'm doing with a laptop,
and I'm sitting.
What about the custom house?
At $74,000,
this home was the smallest
at just 204 square feet.
I was actually surprised by
all the character that it had.
Exposed copper piping.
Even the copper walls
makes it really unique.
The base price, the $51,000,
I like because I would like
more drywall.
But why would you
want to cover up the wood?
It had this beautiful look
to it.
To me, it felt dark.
So, what about
the biggest house?
At 400 square feet,
this tiny home could max out
their parents' lot,
and at $62,000,
it's over budget.
The house is big.
I'm not complaining, necessarily,
about it being so big.
I simply don't think
it's gonna fit.
What about the huge kitchen?
Well, I liked the big kitchen.
Kind of the focal point.
It is nice that this one
had the separate spaces upstairs
in the loft area
that could be an office area.
Bedroom is cramped,
and I'm not sure
how a king-sized bed
would fit in there.
If it did, it'd probably be
with inches to spare.
There just seems like there's
a lot of risks with this house.
Big decision to make.
I'm thinking that the beige
house, it doesn't do it for me.
Like, it really, really
- doesn't do it for you?
- Yeah.
Unfortunately,
I don't feel it.
I think that one's out.
That leaves the big one
and the small custom.
The small custom, too tight.
I really love that house,
but it's gonna feel
like a large closet,
and we're gonna be sort of
on top of each other,
and that could test
our marriage.
Yeah.
I'm feeling good
about the big one,
and I'm kind of
feeling lucky
with as far as bringing it
down here.
From the moment I saw it,
I had the best feeling.
It's pretty modern,
stainless-steel appliances,
and I like the size.
So, are we gonna do this?
The choice is clear.
We're getting the big one.
- Oh, my gosh.
- Yeah,
we're getting the big one.
- Yes.
- I like that one the most.
Ooh, strawberries
with the brownies,
that's gonna be so good.
We've been moved in now
for a couple weeks.
We ended up paying $65,000,
including $3,000 for delivery.
Getting this house
into this spot is quite a story.
Tires blew out 100 miles
out from the factory
because of the sheer weight
of the building.
Axle was done.
They had to bring out
a whole new setup.
It finally got down here.
Getting the house
up their narrow driveway
and onto the property
was also problematic.
The driver just said,
"This isn't gonna happen."
And I basically got in his face
in a polite way and said,
"You're gonna drive this thing
to the house."
I had a 25-foot pole lifting up
a 300-pound branch.
People are looking at us.
The driver's sweating,
and they're ripping
the fence down
that has been here
for probably decades.
It was insane.
When the driver got the model
into the yard,
we did a little chest bump,
and everybody was high-fiving.
Anna's starting to break down
into tears in the corner.
I started to cry.
I couldn't believe
that it made it and it's here.
So far on the outside
of the home,
they've added
a redwood deck and a sign.
This tiny house is so colossal,
it needs a name.
We ended up with Tiny Titan.
And it's perfect.
Feels good to be
in a big kitchen now.
I know.
I love the kitchen.
White cabinets,
granite countertops.
It just has everything.
So, this looks good.
Yeah, that looks cozy.
I'm okay with the bedroom.
It's a very tight fit,
I must say.
What's more worth it is that
we don't have a wall between us.
That's good enough for me.
Hey, I just got off the phone
with Robert.
Apparently, we're gonna do
the product launch.
The office,
so far, it's worked out.
I've had to do
my ninja walk.
It's pretty scaled down,
but functional.
It's the tea set.
I had a lot of stuff
in storage,
and I've had to part
with quite a bit of it.
It's been challenging,
but it's been freeing, as well.
Gosh, what's not to love
about this house?
I think it's got
just about everything.
It's nice to have
our own spot.
We're here on my parents'
beautiful property.
I love living here.
We love it.
We're so happy.
I think this is quite fitting
for our tiny house.
