Third Watch (1999–2005): Season 6, Episode 20 - How Do You Spell Belief? - full transcript

Carlos buys a ring. A young man's parents are shot and Finney and Davis are left for dead in their upturned car. Emily is invited to the vampire club and rejects them. Grace is disturbed by her feelings towards Finney when he is injured.

Previously on "Third Watch.."

I'm sorry.

Because I was pregnant with your child

'and now you feel sorry for me?'

- 'No.' - Why? Because I got shot?

- No! - Then why, Ty?

I realize that I love you.

Gee, I got to tell you, if I ever
caught you with my daughter

you'd get to test that whole, uh

"Vampires are immortal" theory.

She needs to learn some respect.

Emily... I thought that was you.

I'm David.

You taught me something
today that no one ever has.

I did?

You made me appreciate being an orphan.

Where you going? You're on modified duty.

So?

Are you kidding me?

This isn't about you anymore.

'I cannot believe this!
You gotta be kidding me!'

Dammit! Come on!

Yeah. Yelling usually helps.

Look, I've got an assignment to get to.

- You? - We.

Why so excited to get to a theft report?

Well, anything's gotta be
better than sitting in this mess.

You should've taken third.

- You might've said earlier.
- You wouldn't have listened.

See, then you would have a
basis for your little snotty comments.

"Snotty?"

Snotty, pissy, snarky. Whatever you want.

Oh, such harsh language.
Don't you know any men's words?

What do you think?

I can't believe you're serious.

Yeah, that's kind of puny
when you put it next to that one.

Can you afford that one?

No.

Look, she probably wouldn't care

if it came out of a Cracker Jack's box.

That's setting the bar kind of low.

We're talking about Holly.
She wears string bracelets.

They're friendship bracelets.

Made of string.

I'll take it.

Excellent choice, sir.

I thought you said "Her
parents were a nightmare."

Completely. They're lunatics.

And that makes you wanna marry her.

Can you wrap it?

No!

You don't wrap an engagement ring.

I'm gonna be paying for
it for the rest of my life.

I can't have a-a-a bow?

You don't wrap an engagement ring.

I didn't know there's rules.

Three months ago you said you hated her

and now you wanna spend
the rest of your life with her?

I know you have trouble
with this love thing.

It's just crazy. I mean, what's the rush?

What do you care?

How about one of those
bows that sticks on top?

Looks like the whole
city's on the street today.

Oh, we are going to be so late.

'Remember when times didn't
have so much meaning for us?'

Yeah. Our meetings were
never scheduled so strictly.

Father says "The Lord needs
us to be where the money is."

Where does he expect us to go?

Yeah, the city would be so much nicer if..

People practiced
a little bit of patience.

I mean, how hard a concept is this?

Don't block the damned box!

Would you stop yelling, you idiot?

I should write everyone of 'em!

Got a semi-block in the intersection.

- Wanna go out and push it? - Yeah.

'This is 5-5 David to Central.'

We need an extra-large tow
truck at Jefferson and Henry.

We got a semi-block in the intersection.

- '10-4, David.'
- That's it? That's all you got?

- Turn on your siren.
- It-it's not an emergency.

- They don't know that. - Well, I do.

Maybe he has an emergency or something.

- Or maybe he's just a jerk. - Stephen!

He doesn't think we wanna be moving too?

There's nothing I can do.

He just hit us. He just bumped the van.

- Peter, get out of his way.
- ' "Out of his way?"'

I'm gonna go see if there's any damage.

- Don't do that. - God!

- He's doing it on purpose!
- Stay in the van.

- Get out of his way, Peter. - I can't!

'Units in the 5-5 we're
getting a holdup alarm'

'at the Century East Bank.'

- 'One one seven..' - Now we're talking.

So a bank robbery gets you excited?

I'm a simple man, brother.

Come on!

Come on!

- God! - What a jerk!

Come on. Go over to the sidewalk.

The sidewalk?

Come on, Peter. He's gonna hurt us.

The side walk!

- God! - 'What is going on?'

Go. Come on. Go over on the sidewalk.

- Alright. Just hold on. - Come on.

God!

Come on. We got a bank robbery to get to.

You are just full of beans today.

He's comin', dad?

Look, he's not stopping.

- Ah, geez! - He's gonna kill us.

- Oh, God! - Hold on!

Come on, Peter. Get away from him!

Come on, Peter, go!

- Get away from him! - Hold on! Hold on!

Finney.

Brendan, wake up.

'Finney.'

Dad, he's coming.

- No! No! - Run, Stevie.

- What? - You can run now.

You can run now, you're free.

Finney.

Fi..

5-5 David.

We've been in an accident. Shots fired.

Shots fired.

'5-5 David, come in.'

'We need your locale.'

'5-5 David, can you repeat?'

La Santeria?

Mind your own business.

So you're looking into it, huh?

I might be interested.

I think you're gonna be happier.

Do you think I'm unhappy now?

Hmm?

I'm gonna be taking some time off soon.

You haven't taken an extra day off

in all the time that I've known you.

Yeah, I'm, uh..

I'm gonna start treatment.

- Chemo? - Yeah.

That's great, sarge.

Yeah.

Uh, I'm looking for Officer Yokas.

- Emily? - Yes, sir.

You probably don't remember
me. I'm John Sullivan.

- Sully. - Yeah.

Yeah. That's right. Sully.

Uh, I'm just supposed to
meet my mom for lunch.

Oh.

Hey, Jelly?

'Yeah.'

Yokas' daughter's here.

She's in with the boss.

Just have a seat.

That's not true, boss.

Which part?

What do you mean?

Which part of the story isn't true?

That you asked Yokas to shoot for you

or that Larry Busante did?

I can't believe you're doing this.

You can't even look at me.

Because whether you realize it or not

I'm trying to protect you.

Yeah, I bet. Does it make you feel good?

Did you ask her to shoot for you?

Yes. But she wouldn't do it.

So it made me realize
if I was gonna do this

I'd have to do it myself. So I
practiced 10 hours straight.

Figured out where my
aim was off, compensated.

What about Busante?

There is only one person.

One, that I trust enough to
ask for something like that.

Trusted, past tense.

'Units in the 5-5, we have five David'

'calling shots fired in an
accident at the intersection'

'of Henry and Jefferson.'

Wait here, Bosco.

That's 108 turf.

5-5 Crime Sergeant
responding to shots fired

at Henry and Jefferson. Move it.

- Sully, you're my driver.
- Car's out front.

I'll drive. Emily.

You told me to come by for lunch?

I know. Uh, an officer just got hurt.

Don't worry about it, mom. Go.

- She thinks I'm amazing. - What?

'She took me to meet her
parents because she wanted them'

to see her amazing boyfriend.

- You? - That's what I said.

And then, I don't know, we were coming home

it was late, I was driving, Holly
was asleep on my shoulder.

I looked at her and it hit me.

This whole zen-like thing.

- Did you just say "zen?" - I love her.

I do, I really do.

'And if she thinks I'm amazing'

why the hell wouldn't I wanna marry her?

But marriage? I mean..

If she says yes.

5-5 Crime to Central, we
need busses forthwith at

Henry and Jefferson.
Five David was involved..

Thank you. We got help
coming. Thank you. Finney.

'Davis, what happened here?'

Guy had a gun.

Brendan.

He's unconscious but he's breathing.

Carlos, I need a collar now!

- He shot them. - 'Who shot them?'

The van. The van.

- You got them? - 'I got them.'

What the hell happened here?

'How are they?'

Finney is still unconscious.

Davis is with the doctor. Where's Jelly?

You know, we have crime scenes
where nobody sees anything.

Everybody wants to talk about this.

We got like 50 witnesses

so Jelly's getting all the pedigrees.

Apparently, a pickup without license plates

got into some sort of traffic
altercation with the victims.

They were in a van so they got up

on the sidewalk to get away from him.

- The sidewalk? - Oh, it gets better.

The pickup goes up on the sidewalk too

starts pushin' the van in front of it.

- Road rage? - That's an understatement.

'Cause after pushin' the
van through the intersection

and into Davis and Finney,
this guy comes up with a shotgun

and takes out the couple in the van

that's registered to the "New
Saints of Freedom Church."

- Church people? - I don't know.

Drivers license identifies the dead guy

as Peter Hart from Rockland County.

Female has no ID.

- Long way from home. - Yeah.

Of course when the gun
came out, everybody ducked.

So I was gonna talk to Davis

see if he might have seen anything

And then maybe get in touch
with somebody from this church.

He's in three, to the right.

- Faith. - Yeah.

You did the right thing with Bosco.

- I know. - Thank you.

- Detective? - Yeah?

Will someone be calling his mother?

Uh, I'm sure someone's
gonna look into that.

'Cause she's in Boston, visiting family.

Okay. I'll, uh, I'll make
sure the bosses know.

Yeah.

I think he's gonna be
alright. He's a tough kid.

Thanks.

- How is he? - Still unconscious.

They're gonna CAT-scan his head to see

if there's a bleed or some swelling.

Why don't you go in there and check it out?

I can see from here.

I'm gonna go work on the run sheets.

'You have a grade-one AC separation.'

'Which means what?'

Your shoulder should
be fine in a couple of days

I can have Emma come
in and give you a referral

to an ortho if you want.

No, I'll be alright.
How's my partner doing?

We're still lookin' at him.

- If he needs anything... - I know.

Alright.

Sasha just went home
from the hospital yesterday.

I was supposed to go home
and take care of her tonight.

Well, maybe you guys
can hire a nurse on a twofer.

- Hey, Ty. How you doin'? - Hey.

Headache, separated shoulder.
I'll be sore in the morning.

I'm sore every morning.

Well, your 97 years old.

You feel up to talking about what happened?

Uh, yeah, I remember a horn beeping

a flash of color, and then boom.

We was rolling. When we
stopped, we were upside-down.

What about the shooter?
The guy with the shotgun.

At first I thought he was coming after us

but he went straight to the van

just blasted the people inside.

Did he say anything?

Uh..

Yeah. He talked to the other guy.

The other guy?

The guy, uh, there was
another guy in the back seat.

There was another passenger in the van?

Yeah, the guy with the
gun said he could run.

- What? - It was weird.

He said he could run now. He was free.

- "You're free?" - That's what he said.

'The van belongs to a church group.'

Stevie.

He said, "You can run, Stevie."

- Are you sure? - Pretty sure.

- What did Stevie do? - He ran.

Stevie's got sense.

Where did he run to? Because
we haven't heard from him.

I can't help you with that.

Alright. Thanks, Ty.
I'm glad you're alright.

Say, Faith, did your
daughter ever find you?

Yeah. We, uh, we were
supposed to have lunch.

Yeah, she said.

I actually thought I'd
be working less hours

as a detective. Go figure.

Hey.

I thought you were having
lunch with your mother.

Yeah. Something happened at work and..

- Of course, it did.
- I said a no foam latte.

What do you call this?

That's just, uh, coffee bubbles.

'It's foam. Make me another one.'

Your mother treats you lousy.

She has work.

So do I, but I'd never choose it over you.

Don't you have to be
important at some point too?

I don't think it's that..

'You're special, Emily.'

You deserve to be treated like it.

How about doing this on your own time?

I have a meeting.

It's almost finished, ma'am.

Listen, uh, I get outta
work in a couple of hours.

Can you meet me somewhere?

Where?

Somewhere where you will definitely be

'the most important person there.'

How do you know that?

Because I'll tell everyone you are.

You have that kind of power, huh?

Just show up. You'll see.

- Where is it? - It's a club.

It's called "The Cave of Cain."

- In the village. 8 o'clock?
- I don't know.

'Come on, your mother's working, right?'

What are you gonna do?

Eat another frozen dinner alone again?

See you later.

Let me just grab a lid for you.

Is Jelly sure they don't
need anything else from us?

The detectives never need our help.

We're just the peons, right?

Yeah, until they run out of clues

and have to do some street work

and then we're real important to them.

That was a hell of an accident.

Yeah. Something about traffic
accidents always bothers me.

It's like, I think these people
are driving around one second

and they're torn up
the next. It's so random.

Or not. Some people
believe that nothing is random.

That there's a plan for everything.

Hey, you know what,
take this religion stuff

one step at a time.

You start talking about master plan

and I'm gonna quit before I start.

No problema.

What do you think the plan is for you?

Hey, it's not for us peons to know, sarge.

'Five Crime Sergeant, we
have a drive-by, shots fired'

'Bushwick and 1-1-1 on the street.'

That's 108 turf.

Looks like Strongtown
Riders just got payback.

War's heating up.

5-5 Crime Sergeant responding.

Five Crime Sergeant on
the scene. Two males shot.

EMS on a rush, Central.

'10-4, Five Crime.'

Who did this to you?

I want to die.

Was it Strongtown? Look at me.

Give us a name. Give us a name.

Hey, hey, hey!

'You'll be okay. Look. Look at me.'

Sir..

- Them guys, they alright?
- Who did this, huh?

I told them it wasn't safe
in front of the building.

Who shot you, sir?

'The boys... they were young.'

Did you know, em? Did you know the boys?

They're just kids.

There's a church in there?

That's the address on the registration.

High-rent district.

Guess the offerings are good.

Who was it that said

"If you want to get
rich, start a religion?"

You really got to start
watching the History Channel.

Yeah, in my spare time.

I guess "Freedom" means
they don't lock the door.

Police.

Hello?

Anybody here?

Police.

Hello? Police.

Offerings are very good.

Appointment book's full.

Jelly?

There's another one back here.

Boy, someone really doesn't like

the New Saints of Freedom Church.

Crime scene's on its way.

So, shooter comes in the front door.

She's his secretary.

She barely got out of
her seat. He blitzed her.

So he knows where he's going.

Well, he doesn't need her to tell him.

This guy hears the
shots, comes to the door.

The shooter fires about here.

Right.

What is it?

This guy got shot full on in the chest.

Facin' the shooter.

Yeah, but why doesn't he run?

I mean, all the shrapnel's in the front

of his shoulder and his chest.

He didn't have his arms up or his hands out

in front of him to protect himself.

Some guy's coming
towards you with a shotgun

why don't you run, or
at least try to dodge?

Maybe he didn't think
the guy was gonna do it?

Why does he think that?

Because he knew him.

Well, he knows where he's going.

He comes into this room. He tears it apart.

- He's pissed. - What's he pissed about?

He just shot two people.

Maybe the guy he was
lookin' for wasn't in the office.

He must be the pooh-bah.

"Brother Jonathan Turner."

He looks like somebody
from "Lord Of The Rings."

Looks like this was done last.

What do you mean?

Well, these pictures
are on top of the pile.

You know, like they were
placed here intentionally.

- Oh, my God! - What?

Kids. It's naked kids.

You can go in, Grace.

How is he?

Doctor's lookin' at his scans now.

- Do we have a room yet? - Four south.

Alright, let's get him up there.

Doctor, are you gonna admit him?

Who are you to him?

- I, um, we see each other. - Oh!

Um, there's a small bleed in his brain

we're gonna observe him
for a while, see if it gets worse

he may need surgery
to relieve the pressure.

Is there any family on the way?

- Uh, his mother's in Boston. - Okay.

Well, we're taking care of him.

Ready to get back out there?

- I'm gonna stay. - Stay?

He has a bleed on his brain.

Well, that doesn't mean
he's not gonna be alright.

I'm gonna stay.

Okay. I'll call and put the rig down.

- What's happening here, sarge?
- Phone's ringing off the hook.

Yeah, of course.

Bosco?

You said to wait.

Come back tomorrow.

I'm assigning you to the lockup

until this thing gets worked out.

To the lockup?

- Leave. - No, I don't want the lockup.

That's all you're gonna get, Bosco.

- I didn't do anything. - Go home.

Why are you so pissed at me?

I got two cops hurt in a traffic accident.

Double murder at the accident scene.

Another double murder, which
might be connected at a church.

And two dead in a drive-by.

That's today!

Why am I pissed? Because
I need you out there, Bosco.

I need you.

And now I may not have you.

Go home and report to the lockup tomorrow.

- No one gets in the building.
- 'Yes, ma'am.'

Jelly, I need this warrant
to be comprehensive.

You gonna tell me how to get a warrant?

No, I'm just saying it, if this
case involves kids getting hurt

I wanna make sure all the I's
are dotted and T's are crossed.

Guy across the street.

What about him?

He was hangin' around when we pulled up.

Sir?

Don't, don't make me chase you.

- I didn't do anything.
- I didn't say that you did.

- I was just standing there.
- I need you to turn around.

Turn around!

Is that blood?

- Can I go now? - Put your hands up.

Put 'em up.

- Grab some wall. - Get against the wall.

'Let's go.'

Did we do something?

If I have to make you,
it's gonna hurt. Let's go.

This war of yours is over right now.

We got no war.

Hey, if you were doin'
each other that would be fine

I can live with that.

But now you're shooting
kids and old people.

Look, you can't just be
harassing us like this.

I'm harassing you because
you shot some 108 boys

and an old man in a drive-by.

We was here.

We didn't say when it went down
so how do you know you was here?

We've been here all day!

Good. Then you won't mind a toss.

- Go, go, man. Go! - Watch 'em!

- Go, Little J! Go! - Up against the wall.

Up against the wall.

Five Crime Central, my sergeant
has a foot chase northbound

on West End and 1-16. Up against the wall.

Why did you do this?

Baby, look at me, baby.

No.

Why did you do this?

5-5 Crime Sergeant to Central.

Shots fired by police.

Suspect has gunshot wound in the alley

behind 1-19 and uh, and Green.

We need EMS forthwith.

Do I know you from somewhere?

No.

You look familiar.

I don't know you.

What were you doing
out in front of that building?

Just standing.

Where'd the blood come from?

I didn't do anything wrong.

Look, I got two dead people
inside that church building.

You're standing out front
with blood all over you.

You're not gonna go
anywhere until I know why.

Why don't you have any identification?

I never needed any.

- What's your name? - Stephen.

- Stephen what? - I didn't do anything...

What is your last name?

Hart.

You know Peter Hart?

He's-he's my father.

So you're Stevie?

Please don't call me that.

You were in the van. You
were in an accident earlier today.

It wasn't an accident.

We were on our way to church. And..

He hit our car and he shot my parents.

That's where the blood came
from, from when he shot them.

The woman in the car, that was your mother?

Yes.

Who killed them?

- I don't know. Just some guy. - Some guy?

Some guy that called you "Stevie"

and told you that you could go?

I told you, I told you
where the blood came from.

Can I go?

Why didn't you call the police?

'Cause..

I don't-I don't talk to the
governmental forces of Babylon.

Come again.

Uncle Jonathan... teaches us

that you are the forces of Babylon

and that you hate us
because of our belief in him.

I'm only concerned about
the people in that building

and whoever it is that killed your parents.

- You want to persecute us all.
- No, I don't.

You want to get to him through us.

- Uncle Jonathan?
- You hate him most of all.

I don't hate anybody, Stephen.

I didn't even know who you
were until a couple of hours ago.

I'm just trying to help.

We don't need your help.

Hey, they cleared you already?

- Yeah, I'm good. - Cool.

I talked to the IAB guys. This
shooting's gonna go on policy.

His gun was recovered. You're golden.

And they want to talk to
you at the house, though.

I don't need you to talk to
me about procedure, Manny.

- I'm a sergeant. - Sorry.

And would it surprise you
to know that it doesn't feel

so golden to kill a thirteen year old?

'Thanks.'

- We got the warrant. - Good.

I got a uniform running it
over. Shouldn't be too long.

So what do you think?

The guy in the box. He your doer?

No. He was the other person in the van.

It was his parents that were murdered.

Why didn't he just tell us that?

I don't know, there's something real hinky

about this whole thing, Jelly.

He doesn't even seem upset
that his parents were killed

right in front of him.

'Maybe he's involved.'

Hire someone to do your mom and dad.

Can't be you. You were
almost killed yourself.

But he didn't almost get killed.

And he didn't stick around
to give himself a story.

'What are you gonna do?'

I don't know.

Oh, my God!

Hello?

Welcome, my princess.

Hi.

Is this, like, a costume thing?

I am Dante. That is my true name.

You lied about your name?

Don't we all lie in the
world out there to get by?

Not really.

We have to.

- Our kind is misunderstood. - Your kind?

Our kind, Emily.

The forgotten.

The ones that no one cares about.

I don't understand this.

This, it is what I am.

A sanguinarian.

- A what? - I drink human blood.

Like a vampire?

I thought it would be easier to show you

than to try to explain it.

Is this, like, a joke?

I assure you, it isn't.

Let me introduce you to some of the others.

No, thanks.

They've been waiting for you to get here.

I'm sorry, David.

- This is just... - Dante.

- Whatever.
- I know it is a lot to take in.

Emily?

Emily?

I thought you were open minded.

And I thought you were sane.

Don't belittle my beliefs.

This is not a belief system.

- This is ridiculous. - It is not.

And you know what? I do
have people who care about me.

- Like your mother? - She works hard.

But we spend time together when she isn't.

She doesn't care. I do.

Well, then don't.

And don't call me again.

Seriously just take the
eyeliner off and go see a doctor.

You bitch!

Oh, I'm sorry.

Oh, uh, for what?

I-I didn't know anyone was in here.

Oh, well, I'll be leaving
myself in a moment.

Please, make yourself co-comfortable.

'Now, is there, uh..'

anything I can do for you, to help you?

I'm not Catholic.

Huh, well, I won't tell if you don't.

You, uh... you know someone who is ill?

Mm-mm. Car accident.

Oh, I'm sorry.

He has, um..

Some bleeding in the brain.

Oh, dear.

He'll probably be fine.

Oh, well, that's-that's good. Thank God.

I was walking through the halls

and I figured ...can't hurt, right?

Uh, no, no.

It certainly can't hurt.

I really haven't been to
church since I was little.

Well... that can be our secret, too.

Should I kneel?

No, there's no requirement.

I've never believed that
God was all that strict

about the rules of engagement.

Is there something else bothering you?

What do you mean?

Well, you said that, uh..

You were out walking
the hallway and then you..

And then you saw the chapel.

Well, if your friend is going
to be perfectly fine, hmm?

I'm a paramedic..

And I deal with
injured people every day.

I take care of them.

Mm-hm.

But I just..

I just stood outside in the trauma area

just waited outside his room.

I can't bring myself to go in

to be close to him.

Oh, why is that?

When I'm out on the street

I can pull myself out of it, you know?

Do all the medical stuff
and turn 'em over and leave.

When he wakes up, I have to
say something to comfort him.

Well, why not just tell him
exactly how you feel about him.

I'm not good at that.

'When he wakes up..'

you'll find those words.

- I will? - Yes.

'You're far more resourceful
than you think you are.'

How do you know that?

It's how bad you are at all this..

And yet you walked through the door.

I have seen you before.

Only you were younger.

That's not your mother, is it?

So?

Stephen, what went on in that church?

I didn't do anything wrong.

Of course you didn't.

It's only love.

Love?

Uncle Jonathan says..

"God made love.

"And God made sex feel good.

And that, even if
you're a kid it's alright."

You were children.

And they love us very much.

- Who does? - The family.

Did you have sex?

It was love.

Stephen..

This is wrong.

Uncle Jonathan said you'd all say that.

Because it is.

You sound like him now.

Who? Uncle Jonathan?

Tommy.

Who's Tommy?

- Can I please go now?
- Stephen, who's Tommy?

He was supposed to be the anointed one.

He was gonna lead us when Jonathan left.

But now he's gonna kill them all.

All the elders.

Why?

They loved him the most.

- Let's go. - Think about this, Thomas.

Now.

We'll be back on the
other side of the break

with a look at how one small town

is competing on the world
stage with the help of the Internet

and a very photogenic young chimpanzee.

where we bring you the world... instantly.

And we're out.

'Two minutes.'

Who's in charge here?

- What? - Who is in charge here?

It's alright. It's alright.

He only wants to hurt me.

- I want to go on the air. - What?

Put me on the air or I'm
gonna kill this old man

and anybody else who gets in my way.
