Third Watch (1999–2005): Season 6, Episode 10 - Rat Bastard - full transcript

Ty reveals Munroe's secret to the squad. When Munroe and Finney Jr are attacked, there is little response to their 10-13 call. Faith investigates the murder of a retired IAB detective. The fire crew have a has-been actor on a ride-along to study for a part.

Aah!

Finney.

Finney.

'Finney, where are you?'

'Finney!'

Is this what you're looking for, bitch?

Ty, I've been trying to
call you since yesterday.

Yeah. I've been busy. What's up?

- Raymond Morris was killed. - What?

I called to meet with him
at Riker's about your father

and they told me he was stabbed.

- When? - A week ago today.

Right after I went to see him.

Where we go from here depends

on what Sully decides to do.

You talked to Sully?

He asked what kind of
consequences someone would face

if they came forward in a case like yours.

Really?

You haven't spoken
to him at all about this?

Ty, it's really not my business

but if you want Sully to help
you, you need to talk to him.

- Have you seen Ty? - What?

What's the matter with you?

- Nothing. - What the hell you doing here?

Davis?

They actually sent you back here?

Don't do this, Ty.

Okay, listen up. I got a few announcements.

Yeah. I got one too, lieu.

Um, Monroe made detective, everybody.

But actually, I guess you
always were one, right?

I got called down to IAB yesterday

had a little chat with Captain Finney

all of a sudden our little

community-oriented holier-than-thou

Detective Monroe walks in yelling

to Captain Finney about
her cover being blown.

'Her IAB cover.'

Davis, chill out, man.

The whole time you were riding with me

you were working for the rat squad?

Enough. Everybody out.
Take your posts! Now!

Monroe, you stay right here.

You filthy rat bitch.

- You didn't have to do that.
- You have a good day.

My daughter came home last night.

- Yeah? - Yeah.

She told the judge that she wants

to live with me.

Good for you.

What's going on?

You know that black
officer riding with Sullivan?

- Yeah, Monroe. - Well..

Word on the street is she's a rat.

Sully, is it true what they're
saying about Monroe?

Davis saw Detective Monroe
yesterday at her IAB office.

- Where is she?
- She's in the roll-call room.

Where are you going, Faith?

I was-I was gonna go
talk to Officer Monroe.

Not today.

Hey, Sully. You call me as
soon as she hits the streets?

You got it.

Why are you assigned here? For Cruz?

Nothing specific.

I was sent here to work patrol,
and if anything came up, to act.

What came up?

I'm not allowed to talk about any cases

I may have been working on.

Your cover's blown.

Captain Finney's supposed
to transfer you out of here.

I guess not.

Lieutenant, I know you may not believe this

but I took the job with IAB
for a very important reason.

Spare me the nobility.

You need to transfer
out of here immediately.

You think you did the right thing?

- Did I do the right thing?
- Davis, she is your girl.

She was my girl, man.

- I mean, all I'm saying is... - What?

- Did you know? - Know what?

That she's working for your father?

You expect him to tell you the truth, man?

I don't think anybody
was asking you anything...

No, I'm asking you something
and you're not answering.

Did you know?

Look, I don't get involved in
my old man's business, alright?

With all due respect,
sir, I'd like to stay.

No, you're on the desk until I can get you

the hell out of my precinct.

- I'm not sitting at the desk.
- I decide what goes on here.

- You understand?
- I haven't done anything wrong.

No one is gonna ride with you.

And I am not putting you out there alone.

- I'll ride with her. - What?

Now, why does that not surprise me?

That okay with you?

You don't have to do that, Brendan.

Yeah, Brendan, you're having enough trouble

fitting in around here.

Look, I don't give a
damn about fitting in, man.

I'll ride with her, boss.

5 David. Davis, you're with Sullivan.

This is far from done, Monroe.

Cops coming after her,
they're coming after you too.

Yeah. And I'll be waiting.

There goes a match made in heaven.

Like me and you are any better.

That's right. Carter Savage.

Oh, you got to be kidding me, lieu.

- What's going on?
- We got a ride-along today.

- Oh, yeah? - No. Carter Savage.

The movie star. He's playing a firefighter.

We're gonna be his research.

- Hello, FDNY brothers.
- Mr. Savage. Lieutenant Walsh.

- Welcome to Squad 5-5.
- Hey, it's Carter, lieu.

- Just, uh, call me Carter.
- Carter. Right.

- Uh, Riha, D.K... - Stu Szczelaszczyk.

Oh. Well, don't ask me to
pronounce that. That's a...

My dad took me to see
my first Carter Savage film

when I was six.

Please tell me that you're only 12 now.

- Twenty four. - Oh.

"Do I look amused to you, pissant?"

- "Lone Wolf." - Wolf Hauser.

Awesome character.
My-My dad loved it. I loved it.

It's the first thing, uh, we
ever saw eye to eye on.

Actually, we haven't agreed on very much

other than your movies.

You know, we go see them the day they open.

Oh. Well, thank you, Mr. Slyzz-azz...

- We call him Lotta Z's.
- Or Stu. Stu's good.

Oh. Well, look, Stu, I
really appreciate that.

And, guys, I want you to
know I really appreciate

you letting me tag along.

And I want you to treat
me FDNY all the way.

You kick my ass, I do
anything wrong, alright?

So, why'd you tell
Swersky you'd ride with me?

When I was younger, I
was always sticking up

for the unpopular kids.

My old man really sent you back here

knowing your cover was blown?

I don't really think we should talk

about your father or IAB.

Why?

You don't want to hurt
me, or you don't trust me

not to report to him?

It's hard to trust anybody
after knowing him.

Thanks.

What the hell?

You come to my promotion ceremony?

You ask me how my divorce is going?

How about when you
take me out for Italian, huh?

- Yokas.. - Are you kidding me?

You call to check on me.

Is that all part of your assignment?

I had to do my job.

But I didn't pretend to be your friend.

You're my friend?

I almost went to jail.

I thought I was gonna lose
my kids because IAB came in

and scooped me up in the
middle of a custody hearing.

Listen to me. I was not investigating you.

Did you ever ask me one question

that pertained to a case about me or Cruz?

You can't give me a straight answer?

I'm gonna tell you something, Monroe.

Transfer..

To far away.

You might be the most unpopular kid

I ever stuck up for.

Sharon told me you talked to her.

I'm gonna testify against
Finney if she can make a case.

What made you change your mind?

Same thing that made me keep
my mouth shut when I figured out

C.T. Finney killed your old man.

You.

You need to leave it alone, man. Just...

What, after all the crap you've given me?

What the hell is this guy doing?

Hit the lights.

Put your hands where I can see them!

'Get out of the car!'

- Hands on the side of the van.
- My-my daughter's been shot.

-'Alright?' -'Hands up on the van.'

It's okay. Get us to the hospital, please!

Please get us to the hospital.

'I'm right here, Debbie.'

She's got a weak carotid pulse.

We got to move her.

I found the bleed.

Ty, give me that backboard.

Sergeant, this is Mr. Wilcox.
His daughter's the victim.

- What happened? - I was lost.

I, uh, I got off the highway to turn around

but I... made a wrong turn
and I couldn't get back to it.

This black son of a bitch flagged me down

like he was trying to help

then tried to rob us.

I floored it, but he took a couple of shots

and, uh, one of them hit Debbie.

So what did he look like?

Other than being a son of a bitch?

I don't know, uh..

He was, uh, six feet tall

maybe around 30 years old.

He was wearing, like, something

like a stocking on his head.

Uh, he had a black jacket, jeans or sweats.

Okay, after your daughter's taken care of

we might need you to
help us look for the shooter.

- Anything you need.
- We're ready to go, sir.

You guys need me?

I almost lost my life at Riker's.

- Are you crazy? - I will kick your ass!

- Empty threats mean nothing.
- I will kick your ass!

Get off me!

- Alright. - We're not through, bitch!

'Male, white, DOA. One
to the back of the head.'

Client came in for a 2:30
meeting, found him like this.

Client nearby?

He's out in the RMP, pretty shaken up.

Said the vic was a private detective

who was tailing his wife.

Detective Brian McKinley.

Looks like he'd been
off the job a long time.

Yeah, well, he wasn't just
a detective. He was IAB.

Seems like IAB is the theme today.

So, you're playing a
firefighter in your next movie?

Yeah. First firefighter on
Mars after it's been populated.

The year is 2065, but this guy
is in some phony Hollywood deal.

This guy is FDNY through and through.

Real smoke eater from Brooklyn,
who after the entire planet

has been abandoned
out of fear is left alone

to single-handedly fight off
an invasion from deep space.

- It's a great script.
- Lone Wolf Hauser on Mars.

Yeah, except for it isn't Lone Wolf.

It's a different character.

But Wolf had to fight to save

that Texas border town in "Blazing Glory."

Yeah, yeah, but this is
not Wolf! Different guy.

- Is there oxygen on Mars?
- I don't know. Why?

- Fires need oxygen. - Hey, man.

I don't write this stuff.

I just make it watchable.

- Can we do this? - Yeah. Alright.

You ready for some firefighter lingo?

- Bring it on. - Alright.

You got your six-foot
hook, your Halligan tool

your partner saw, your flathead
axe and your hydra-ram...

That's enough right there.

We got a sixteen-foot hook,
we got a-a humuli, huligamu...

That's close. That's
close. We'll try again.

Hey, man! Just tell me the names!

Do not treat me like I'm stupid!

Hey, man. I-I never said you were stupid.

Come on, man. You're
supposed to be my biggest fan.

That was straight out of "Lethal Bullets."

That was my movie right before "Lone Wolf."

'Squad car five..'

Hey, Carter, I left some
turnouts for you on the rack.

Cool. What's a turnout?

Hey, how's it going with him?

Have you ever heard of "Lethal Bullets?"

Aren't they all?

'Eight-year-old female,
GSW to lower abdomen.'

Intubated, no resps. BP 60, tachy at 120.

Eighteen-gauge antecubitals
times two with saline running.

GCS two-one-four.

'Trauma Four is open.'

This has got to be the
worst day of their lives.

So why don't you let me
help you with your father?

Because I don't need your
help. I can get C.T. Finney myself.

You call me dirty, accuse me of
being in on your father's murder

and when I offer to
help, you tell me, no way.

I got the files. That's all I need.

Davis, 20-year-old files without someone

to authenticate them are worth nothing.

Well, maybe if you would
have spoken up back then

we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Alright. I get that you're mad at me.

But why won't you let me help?

Sully, you get involved in this,
you're gonna lose your pension.

You're gonna go to jail.

Just don't worry about
it. I'll take care of it.

Oh, so now you're looking out for me?

I guess so.

You thought about what he's
gonna do when you go after him?

The minute I bring all
this out, C.T.'s gonna do

what he's got to do to try to stop me.

And if he, uh..

When it gets bad,
I'll just.. I'll deal with it.

Your father said the same thing.

You sure? Right. Thanks, Madeline.

- We got problems. - That's news?

That was the ME. She's
got the slug. It's a Plus-P.

Does that mean something to you?

Plus-P used to be issued
to cops. We hated them.

They were made specifically
to keep a fired round from going

through someone we shot
and hitting anyone else.

Well, it did a pretty good
job on that victim today.

Faith, these bullets were never
for sale on the open market.

Wait. What are you saying?
He was shot by a cop?

If that bullet didn't come
from Brian McKinley's gun

our Christmas stocking just
got filled with a big lump of coal.

Is there any change?

No. They're still working on her.

Mm.

Well, we got to get this father
out there to show us exactly

what happened because otherwise

we got zero chance of nailing this guy.

What if we show the guy a map

let him find where they got off
the expressway and backtrack

to where she got shot?

Mm, if you can get this
guy to focus, I'm game.

I think I got one in the car.

- Hey, how is he? - Who, Davis?

Yeah, you find out you're
sleeping with the enemy

it's got to affect you.

He's good.

Help! Help! Help!

Hey, what the hell is going on?

We were fighting for the
ultimate championship

in the ring of death.

Well, the ring of death
is now closed, my friend.

Oh, my parents are gonna kill me.

Stu, run a line back here.

Alright, we need to run an
inch-and-three-quarter hose

from the rig.

Right behind you.

Holy spit! That's that Wolf Hauser guy!

Yo! Yo, it's Wolf Hauser!

You know, that guy used to be big!

My name is Savage. Wolf Hauser
is a character, you dumbass!

- Ease up, man. Let's go. - Fine.

Alright. What can I do?

You can help me run
the hose back to the lieu...

- Got it. - No.

That's the three-and-a-half hose.

We need the three-quarter. It's over here.

Get off.

I got this.

This isn't some movie
set. You can't screw this up.

Stay here.

'So you got off somewhere
around 98th and Arthur?'

Yeah. I think I made a left
and drove for a few blocks.

Can you go over what
happened once more, Mr. Wilcox?

I was arguing with my wife.

And then I missed our exit ramp.

So I got off where I could to turn around.

'I stopped to ask directions and, uh... '

What? Stop?

You said earlier that
you were flagged down.

Fine. I was flagged down.

What was your exit?

Look, can I go see how my daughter is?

I'll, uh... I'll go check.

Hey, he was driving a company car

for Berman Pharmaceuticals.

He wasn't even supposed to have it anymore.

They fired him last week.

Still waiting for him to return the car.

I'll ask him about it when I get back.

'Oh, God. So stupid.'

I wouldn't do that if I were you.

Wrong turn, Paul?

Where did you get that?

- What, you-you had drugs?
- Paul, please don't do this.

'Officers, Mr. Wilcox
has five seconds to either'

tell us who shot his
daughter, or he and his wife

will not be here when she wakes up.

- Four. - Paul.

'You'll never see your kid again.'

Three.

Paul's company had just received

a shipment of OxyContin.

And Paul stole some of it.

'He was taking it to this guy'

he'd been selling to for a
while, but he didn't trust him.

So, he hid it in Debbie's doll.

'In case he tried anything and he did.'

He tried... to rip him off.

And Paul got mad.

And said that he would turn him in.

He shot Debbie, Paul.
Don't you care about that?

What's his name?

I only know his nickname.

Skeeter.

- Skeeter Matthews? - 'I guess.'

No! No.

Now, you listen to me.

We had a deal.

They cannot just go in another direction.

I'm already here doing research.

Oh, come on. The DUI
thing is just an allegation.

I haven't been convicted of anything.

Have you-have you told them this?

Besides, I've visited
that family in the hospital

what is it, twice now?

I'm paying for all their
damn medical bills.

What else am I supposed to do?

Alright, Irwin.

Look, man, this is me.

This is very important
to me. I want this part.

Would you please just one more time

just try calling them?

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Bye.

Dammit.

Yeah, yeah. I know what
you're saying to yourself.

"Golly gee! This ain't the
same guy who jumped off

a fighter jet onto the wing
of Air Force One", right?

You got into an accident driving drunk.

I wasn't drunk.

I was coming home from
a long day of shooting.

We work 16-17 hours sometimes.

- My old man uses a soda can. - What?

Carries around a soda for everybody to see.

But he hits it all through
the day with a pick-me-up.

He'd be out cold by the end of the night.

Yeah, well, you know, I do my
own stunts and six years ago...

If you're drunk, you're a risk to us.

I'm not drunk, Stu.

It's just a hair of the dog.

Look..

Let me just finish out the day.

It's better I go back to that studio.

At least I got the lingo down.

I get this part..

Um, resurrect my career.

'Let's go, Stu. Let's wrap it up.'

You're a big fan, right?

- Yeah. I'm a big fan. - Well, good.

Then let's... just keep this call

and this discussion between us.

I'm not a danger to anyone.

I'm just a broke-down
guy developing arthritis

fighting for a job.

Five years ago, they would
have paid me to read the script.

Alright?

Yeah.

This guy used to protect some serious scum.

He was scum.

He retired in '85 for medical reasons.

Medical like, "I'm sick with cancer?"

Or medical like, "Get lost
and we'll make up a reason?"

Who knows with IAB?

Grimaldi here.

Yeah?

Uh-huh.

Great. We'll be right there.

Victim's wife's reporting him missing.

She just got back from out of town.

Apparently, they ransacked the house too.

Okay. Everybody, listen up.

We got a positive ID on the suspect

from the shooting of
a little girl this morning.

According to Paul Wilcox

Skeeter was wearing a dark coat

jeans or sweats and a stocking cap.

We don't need your help.

- I'm doing my job. - Your job or IAB's?

'Sergeant Cruz, finish the briefing.'

Skeeter Matthews has
been in for violent crimes

'and drug possession.'

Now, the neighborhood he
deals from is a major drug area.

'So the only way that these
people are gonna help us'

locate the guy is if it's
to cut out the competition.

Questions?

Find him.

- I've seen this guy before.
- You know where this guy is?

Yeah. He hangs out near
a 105th Street, by the park.

He's not gonna be hard to find.

I'll be right back.

Looks like Christmas came early for you.

I didn't mean for C.T. to
come after you about that ticket.

Hey, you could have fooled me.

Ty, where I come from, people
are victimized by the cops.

I've seen them disregard every law

they swore to uphold.

And who's gonna stop
them from doing that, huh?

Who's gonna police them?

If a cop does the right thing

they have no reason to be afraid of IAB.

We're only a threat to those
cops who act like the criminals

that we arrest on the street every day.

So now I'm no different than a criminal?

Get out of my way.

Was your husband having
problems with anyone?

He kept his work to himself.

Was he worried about
anything the last few days?

More than usual?

I've been at my sister's house in Hoboken.

'We talked about a separation.'

But... I never would have left him.

I only wanted him to
pay more attention to me.

Take your time, Mrs. McKinley.

'Um... can I..'

- Can I get a tissue? - Sure. Go ahead.

Jelly, come here.

Why does that number look familiar to me?

That's Monroe's number.

Uh, my mother, she, uh.. Are you...

He's the guy from the movies, dad.

Hey, sport.

I know you haven't
been in any movies lately

but I-I didn't know that
you were a fireman now.

Just doing some research.

Sir, your mother?

Right. She's in the kitchen.

'She stuck her hand in
the garbage disposal.'

- Carter, you okay? - Yeah, yeah.

Just, I, uh, tripped on a toy there.

Why don't you go ahead?
I'm-I'm gonna get some air.

- 'Power off for the disposal?' - No, no.

I just got stuck. I'm so embarrassed.

Oh, you're pretty cute for
someone who got themselves

into a situation like this.

- Stu, let D.K. in, please. - Yeah.

'We'll have you out of
there in a minute, ma'am.'

Ma'am, I'm gonna take
some of this olive oil

'and put it on your arm.'

'And we're gonna get you
out of there in a second.'

'What's wrong with him?'

I'm okay.

I just, uh..

It's just something I ate.

Cover your flask.

He got sick while he was
bringing down some bad guys

for a foreign government.

Let's go help your grandmother.

Swersky might be right.

'Maybe I should transfer.'

It'll just follow you
to your next precinct.

But that's all they'll know.

At least here you got some people

kind of giving you a chance.

Wait. Hold up. Pull over.

That's him, right there.

5 David to Central.

We got that shooting
suspect at 109 and Arthur.

Additional units requested.

Skeeter Matthews!

Put your hands where I can see them.

Yo, I didn't do nothing.

Put your hands where I can see them now!

- Get the car! - 5-5 David to Central.

We have shots fired at 109 and Arthur.

Let's seal up these
exits and wait for backup.

Give me the damn flashlight.

Monroe, you got nothing to prove.

Just make sure you have my back.

Monroe, wait. Monroe!

Dammit.

My backup's on the way.

You better come out, you son of a bitch.

I'm getting out of here!

And you're my insurance
policy. You hear me?

Ah!

Finney.

Finney.

'Finney, where are you?'

'Finney!'

10-13 to Central.

I'm unarmed!

'5-5 David, officer needs assistance.'

'5-5 David, officer needs assistance.'

'Need units in field to
respond to 5 David's 10-13.'

'Units to respond.'

'5-5 David.'

'Officer needs assistance.'

'Please send me some assistance.'

'Finney?'

'Finney?'

'Finney, where the hell are you?'

Monroe, where are you?

Monroe?

5 David to Central. I've lost my partner.

'She was in pursuit of an armed suspect.'

Your call.

This is 5-5 Charlie responding to 10-13.

Need location.

Monroe, answer me.

'Bet you thought today
was gonna be an easy day.'

'Catch some criminals and... lock them up.'

'Go on back to your nice house.'

'Bet you thought today
was gonna be a good day.'

'Monroe?'

'Monroe, where are you?'

In here.

'Monroe?'

Finney.

Monroe, where are you?

Talk to me, Monroe.

Is this what you're looking for, bitch?

This is 5-5 Charlie.

We've got a location on 5 David.

You know you shot that little girl?

What?

You didn't shoot Wilcox.

You shot his eight-year-old daughter.

I should have shot all
them sons of bitches.

- Who's the bitch now?
- What? You gonna kill me?

Monroe.

- 'Huh? - Come on, Sasha.

What, you go ahead and kill me then.

That's what you're gonna do anyhow!

Come on, Sasha. Step back.

'Let me cuff this guy.'

Davis, talk to her, man.

She can do whatever
the hell she wants to do.

'That's what it is?'

Y'all gonna let her shoot me
and then y'all gonna cover it up?

Huh?

'Sasha, come on.'

Come on, Sasha. You don't wanna do this.

Don't give these guys the satisfaction

'of seeing you go down like this.'

'Sasha.'

'Look at me.'

Come on.

Take your ass to jail and
let them kill you in there.

I want y'all to know..

That that dude, Paul
Wilcox, he ain't no good guy.

Bringing his family here.

He been bringing dope here for years!

Why don't you go check on your partner?

'Put your hands behind your back.'

You were gonna leave me here?

You were gonna just leave me here?

You should take it easy for a few days.

Make sure you get over that flu.

Oh, a couple days' rest, I'll be good.

Hey. There's my guy, huh?

- You recover quick. - Oh, I have to.

People mistake sickness for anything

when you're in the public eye.

Listen, I got paperwork to do.

All the best on your movie.

- Do us proud. - Yeah. I will.

You gonna be okay?

Yeah. If I don't get this
job, I'll get the next one.

I wasn't talking about that.

I know.

In "Lone Wolf"..

After you take down the big-big bad guy

you know, the one with the missiles?

At the very end, you
get back into your car.

And you see the duffle bag
on your seat, you know, with the

ransom money you were
supposed to pay for the father.

No one knows you still have it.

No one's missing it.

But you, you grab the bag
and you take it back to the bank.

You turn it back in.

Now, I told my dad I
thought that was stupid.

But you know what he told me?

He said, "A real hero is
someone who does the right thing

when no one's looking."

My old man is gonna get a kick
out of me telling him I met you.

It'll probably be the first time
in years we haven't argued.

Nothing wrong with believing in heroes.

He's gonna testify that Wilcox
had been here selling drugs.

- Good job. - Good job?

We called for backup and nobody came.

It looks like there was a response to me.

Yeah? Well, it took long enough.

You weren't at the
original location, Finney.

- We had to find you. - Right?

Believe what you want.

Man, what the hell happened to you?

Sasha Monroe.

Davis, I'll see you and
Sullivan back at the station.

Alright.

Hey, I'm gonna be right behind you, okay?

- Nobody's riding with her?
- No. I'm following her.

That's all she needs.

Monroe.

You stay away from her, alright?

Finney, stay the hell out of my way.

Guys, she may have a concussion.

It'd be best if we got her to the hospital.

Did you know Brian McKinley?

Yeah. He's a retired detective.

We found your cell phone number

on an envelope in his house tonight.

He gave me a copy of an IAB folder.

- It was for Davis. - Hey, she's got to go.

Come on, just put her in, alright?

She can talk to you at the hospital.

Finney, why don't you
go wait by your squad?

- I don't think so, alright?
- We really have to go, guys.

Davis, did Monroe give you an IAB folder?

Yeah. What about it?

Because the guy that gave it
to her was murdered tonight.

It was an IAB detective, Brian McKinley.

Brian McKinley was murdered?

- You know him? - 'I used to.'

Found a Plus-P bullet in his brain.

A police bullet?

Sharon told me that Raymond
Morris was killed last week.

- Right after I talked to him.
- Who's Raymond Morris?

The drug dealer that murdered his father.

Now, this IAB guy is
dead. This is C.T. Finney.

He's out of control.
