Third Watch (1999–2005): Season 1, Episode 22 - Young Men and Fire... - full transcript

Doherty has a chilling encounter with an ex-fireman. Yokas is pregnant. Morales and Doc get settled in their apartment. Davis celebrates his one-year anniversary on the police force.

Previously on Third Watch:

- Why do you always worry?
- Don't you think about the future?

- I'm getting married.
- You've only been dating a few months.

You ever make love to opera?

- You did good today.
- Thanks, man.

- About your father...
- I don't need to know.

I love him. I respect
him. I miss him.

You're the only woman
I've ever really loved.

What time is it?

It's almost 6.

Joey will be up soon.

You got eggs? I can
make us omelets.

- I want you out before he wakes up.
- That's it?

- Please, you gotta go.
- Joey's seen us together before.

Yeah, well, not lately
he hasn't. Come on.

No, you have to
get... No, don't.

- Really. Don't.
- Don't? No?

I tell you what. Why
don't we just call in sick?

Then we could spend the
day in bed like we used to.

When's Brooke get off?

8:00.

Shouldn't you be
home for her call?

Okay.

So we'll talk later?

Get dressed. I'll make
coffee you can take with you.

Hey.

I love you.

- These going, or Goodwill?
- Oh, Goodwill.

Rick James? DOC: Rick!

- Last traces of my DJ days.
- You were a DJ?

That's how I earned money all
through school. I spun some funk too.

You really want to
keep those old dishes?

- They're pretty. You don't like them?
- They were my grandmother's.

- They look old-fashioned.
- Everything old is new again.

- Now they're retro.
- Yeah, "retro."

What do you want to do with these?
- What's that?

Oh.

I guess I've
been putting it off.

I don't know what
to do with them.

I mean, if we'd divorced, I'd
burn or rip them up or something.

It's not fair to have her
up, staring down at you.

Great body.

Yeah.

- Thanks!
- What? Do you want me to lie?

- How'd you meet?
- High school. She was...

She was dating
this friend of mine...

and he messed around on
her. And I was the revenge.

This is our wedding. Well, you
can figure that out by the dress.

Babe, pick out a favorite or two.
We'll find a spot in our new place.

And the rest you can
put in an album, to keep.

That'd be okay?

Just not in the
bedroom, if that's okay.

Hey, how's the move going?

You forget how much crap
you have until you try to pack.

It'll be weird living in my parents'
place, sleeping in their bedroom.

- The rent's cheap, right?
- No. Reasonable.

What's not to like? Paint
the rooms a new color.

I rented this place where a guy was
killed. There was blood everywhere...

Adam-553, respond to
standby. Fire, occupied high-rise.

Possible smoke-inhalation victim.
24296 between Park and Lex.

Adam-553.24296. Nobody would
rent it so they lowered the price.

I signed the lease.

A little spackle, paint, a
steam cleaner. Good as new.

Two drops of urine.

Please. Please.

Don't turn red.

Holy Mary, Mother of God!

I bet we can't
recall the elevators.

- You know it, brother. MAN 1:
I need everybody to step back!

Battalion-24, urgent.
10-77 at block 662.

Fire in a 22-story dwelling.
Whose apartment's on fire?

Stiversons, 18. I'm right
next-door to them, 18-D.

He's an invalid. The
ambulance people are there.

Jimmy, get your team up to
18. Get the paramedics out.

18th floor. Perfect.

Guess I can skip the
Stairmaster for a while.

Hello! Somebody up there?
- Yeah, up here.

- Anybody else up here?
- People in 18-D, where the fire is.

- The extinguisher ran out.
- Why are they still in there?

He had a stroke. His
wife won't leave him.

- Where are they?
- The back.

Stay back here.

It's stuck, give me a hand.
- One, two, three.

Oh, thank God! Thank God!
I've been calling and calling!

He can't walk! He can't
breathe because of the smoke.

We'll take care of
him. You must leave.

- I won't leave!
- You have to.

- Get her out to the maintenance man.
- We have to go now. He'll be fine.

We gotta lose this.
Oxygen is flammable.

I love you, Eric!

- You had a stroke? Can you speak?
- Yeah.

- Can you walk at all?
- No.

Get her out of here, now!

- We'll give you oxygen outside.
- That living room's hairy.

We'll have to carry him.

Your wife's safe. She didn't
want to go. She really loves you.

One, two, three.

- Is there another way out?
- No!

Open the window. - Right.

Central, Adam-553
on scene. 10-85.

Fire has engulfed the
entranceway. We have no way out.

Two paramedics and a
non-ambulatory victim trapped.

Here we go.

- She's had too many chalupas.
- That's not funny.

Bobby, it's kind of funny.

- If she were black, would you say...?
- Point taken.

I'm a horrible person.
Jimmy came over last night.

- What did he want?
- He left this morning.

- He's engaged! What's wrong with you?
- I don't know!

Did Joey see him?

No, thank God!

He came to talk. The
next thing I know I'm naked.

It was just like our first date!

I don't know, I have no
willpower when it comes to him.

- I'm a slut.
- Watch it.

Thanks for
disagreeing with that.

- You said it. Not me.
- I'm an idiot.

What did I see in
him in the first place?

57 to 24, at stairway A.

Give me water.

Chief, where are the paramedics?

Back-door bedroom. Smoke's
infiltrating the door, it's hot.

Don't open it. We'll get water.

Here comes the water!

- Give me more pressure!
- Is it up all the way?

It's wide open. It's wide open!

57 to 24, we've lost
pressure on the standpipe.

There's too much
fire. We can't advance.

24 to 57. We're gonna have
to hand-stretch a line to you.

How long will it take?
Things are hot in here.

Can't go through the door.

The line will take too long.

You'll never be able to
get them out without gear.

Come on!

Steve, the ropes! Pass them up!

Wait here for the line.
Davey, Q, you're with me.

57 to Battalion. We're doing a rope
rescue. Have a company come to 17.

10-4. Ladder 100
is on the way up.

Move it along, sir.

My mother's coming right down.

So go around.

- Mom!
- Hey, move it or lose it!

- Hard to believe it's almost a year.
- Today.

- Today?
- Yeah.

Time flies when
you're having fun.

- Is your probation almost up?
- Tomorrow.

- Didn't think you'd last.
- Thanks for the confidence.

- We had a pool going.
- For what?

How long you'd
stay. I said four days.

- Four days?
- I wanted two, but Bosco got that first.

- Who won?
- Yokas.

She had two weeks. That was
the longest anybody guessed.

57 to Ladder 100,
you in position?

We will be in two minutes.

All right, tie off to
something back there, okay?

Doc, how are you guys up there?

Do whatever you're gonna do.

- You ready?
- Yeah.

A little more slack.

Slower. A little slower.

Keep it coming.

Save your breath.

No. Tell Mama. Tell Mama.

Your wife?

Yeah. Tell her I love her...

please?

Doc! DOC: Son of a bitch!

Little more slack.

- How are you guys doing?
- Better now.

We've got men to
pull you in. Who's first?

Stroke victim. Can you rig
him to go down as dead weight?

You bet.

Please, tell her.

Soon you'll be able
to tell her yourself.

See if you can get
that top window out.

- You're quiet. FAITH:
I don't want to talk.

- That's a first.
- Not today, Bos.

I got enough crap to deal with.

- You don't care about the opera?
- Not really.

- It was good. I enjoyed it.
- Good for you.

It was like an aphrodisiac for
Nicole. Like oysters or something.

It comes around to your crotch?

It was just an observation.

Only you could segue
from Verdi to your victor.

Not today, Bos! I'm warning you!

It was Puccini, not Verdi.

Whoa.

Hang on to the rope. Stay
upright. We'll do the rest, okay?

Always liked you, Jimmy.

See you down there in a minute.

Take up some slack!

- You good?
- Yeah.

Okay.

There you go. We got you.

Hell of a way to make a living.
- Yeah, I'd do it for free.

Grab the front.

- I'm right here. DOC:
Excuse us, ma'am.

Is he gonna be okay?

He seems fine. The doctors
at the hospital will make sure.

- You want to come with him?
- Yes. Thank you.

Good luck.

- Jimmy rappelled off the roof?
- Yeah.

A couple more minutes,
we'd have been toast.

- A long way down.
- Crazy son of a bitch.

Hey, officer? What is going on?

It looks like a fire.

A 400-pound man
jumped off the top floor...

- Where are you going?
- To help.

- Who?
- I'm a fireman.

Back up. Do you have ID?

- People are dying!
- I need ID.

- I got to get to work.
- Back up.

- Is there a problem?
- I gotta get to work.

He says he's a
fireman. I asked for ID.

You're a fireman? What house?

Next time wear your big
hat and your yellow coat.

For now, I have to
ask you to step back.

A couple more
steps, sir, please.

Step back, sir.

I wish they'd keep the
back door at Bellevue shut.

What's this is about? - What?

All this. Today. You. FAITH: No.

Fred again? One of
the kids do something?

Did your brother call? It'll be
better if you get it off your chest.

I'm fine.

Don't carry it around
inside. That's what stress is.

No way anybody's
gonna hear over that.

I told you I'd call the police!

- Thank God!
- Did you call in a complaint?

Yes. I can't get him to stop.

I asked him nice.

He just gives me the finger.

He's 9 and uses the
f-word all the time.

He makes me sick!

You see what you made me do?

Look who's here!
Turn the damn thing off!

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!
Would you knock it off!

Tell him to turn it off!

Tell him.

Did you call 911 to have
us turn off your Nintendo?

PlayStation. It's PlayStation.

The kid does whatever he wants!

Mom, I clear the hall, I
get the grenade launcher.

- So what?!
- Are these your kids?

What about it?

- He's not doing anything illegal.
- He can just do anything?

Video games aren't
against the law.

He doesn't go to school either.

Skips school whenever he wants.

Will you tell him
to knock it off?!

- Anything else?!
- No, there's nothing else.

I'm telling you, you are next!

All right, come here.

Knock it off! Cut it out!

In the corner. In the
corner. I'm telling you.

Another couple feet.

You want coffee? KIM: No.

I'll be right back.

Oh, man! You're a
glutton for punishment.

What was that about?

- What?
- Did you tell the guys?

No. Should I?

You rappelled off
a 20-story building?

That what you
want to talk about?

You're engaged, Jimmy.

- What about us?
- What about us?

It's still there.

- We shouldn't act on it.
- Why?

- That's how we feel.
- That's how we felt the first time.

That didn't go well.

That's my fault.
I'm still sorry.

How am I ever supposed
to trust you again?

I just wish you could.

Because I still love you.

I want you back in my life.

I miss you. I miss Joey.

I miss just us being a family.

Squad 52, Engine 57...

residential garage
on fire, 108324.

Hey, Jimmy! Let's go!
- That's you.

Give me another chance,
Kim. I won't let you down.

An apartment of future overtime.

How long until we're
handcuffing them?

If you can't control
them, don't have them.

Six kids in there,
another in the oven.

- That's my worst nightmare.
- What?

I used to wake up in
the middle of the night...

dreaming I was pregnant,
living in a trailer park...

with kids hanging
off my shopping cart...

pushing through
Wal-Mart, buying Pampers...

using food stamps to
pay for frozen hot dogs.

Woman should be neutered. A
cat has too many kittens, snip-snip.

That's how it is in China. You
have one, the government comes in.

I'm pregnant.

Congratulations!

- No?
- No! Not even close!

- What's Fred say?
- I haven't told him.

We can't afford to
have another kid.

- How pregnant?
- Three weeks late.

I took one of those home kits.

- What are you gonna do?
- I don't know.

Oh, man!

- Ladder company's delayed.
- Hey, across the street.

Hey, you. Hey, we need
you across the street!

Hey! What's wrong with you?

- Across the street.
- Get back!

- It's not safe!
- What? Why?

- I'm a fireman.
- Get that man back!

Sir, I understand.
We'll take care of it.

- I'm a fireman.
- Let us take it.

I'm a fireman!

Get across the street!
What's wrong with you?

What happened?

He came into my lane
jabbering on his phone.

What lane? I had
my turn signal on...

and you came flying
up out of nowhere.

License, proof of
insurance, please?

- It was his fault.
- He must've been doing 50.

Let's get this over with.

This is what I
hate about the city.

Lunatic cabbies thinking
this is their demolition derby.

I thought you
cracked down on them.

With jaywalkers,
our plate is full.

55 precinct. Shots fired
at the fire department.

108, 3 to 4. EMS
and ESU notified.

This is 55-Charlie. 108, 3 to 4.

- Here. BUSINESSMAN:
You're leaving?

Just exchange
information, all right?

He probably isn't even insured!

Smoked turkey on wheat,
lettuce, tomato, mustard, no mayo.

And hot pastrami on
rye, mustard, swiss.

- And two of those eggs.
- Anything to drink?

A cream soda and
iced tea, no sugar...

for this one.

- Pastrami gives you heartburn.
- Nah.

- That's what you said.
- Tums.

The way you were belching last
time, you better take a couple rolls.

Some of us are going to the
shore. You and Joey should come.

Be beer, steaks, dancing.
You can work on your sunburn.

Boy-553. Shots fired at FDNY.

Three down, 3 to
4. PD responding.

- Our district.
- 108, 3 to 4. Boy-553.

Hey, your sandwiches!

- They know what units?
- No, I'll call from the bus. Hey!

Hey, whose truck is this?!

- Whose truck is this?
- Hello!

Man, whose truck?!

- Hello! BOBBY: Come
on! Whose truck is this?!

Son of a bitch!

What happened?

Guy in front of
the fire just shot.

- What'd he look like?
- White guy, blue jacket.

- Where'd he go?
- That way.

He kept saying he's a fireman.

Hey, you see a white
guy, blue jacket?

There he is!

Go! Go! Go, go, go!

Out of the way!

Is that the guy?

Yeah! Circle around
109 and cut him off!

Davis!

- Where'd he go?
- I'm not sure.

He went up there!

This is 55-Charlie.
Subject in parking garage.

109 between 4 and 5.
ETA on ESU? Come back.

Three men down, all gunshot
wounds. I think Davey's the worst.

I can barely feel a pulse.

Gunshot wound to the chest.
I didn't find an exit wound.

How you doing?

- Jimmy's worse off.
- Keep pressure on it.

- How you doing?
- Not so good.

Can you breathe okay?
Let's roll him. 1, 2, 3.

- We got an exit wound!
- It hurts like hell.

Get the backboard! Come on!

Got a gunshot to the right
flank. What do you got?

Got a sucking chest
wound. Pressure's way down.

Adam-553 to Central.

We've got two critical.
Where's our backup?

More, more. Whoa!

Okay, okay, whoa! Hey!

We don't have enough room.

Whoa.

- Window down.
- Pop the trunk.

- What is it?
- Anybody up there?

No, not a soul.

- Clear.
- Get out of here. Go!

We should wait for ESU.

The stairs, that's the only way.

- They'll be here.
- We keep going.

- He could be anywhere. We're waiting.
- He's right. We should wait.

Gunshot wound to the
chest. Significant blood loss.

BP's 60 palp, pulse 150.
We're five minutes out.

BP's down to 80/50.

Okay. Belly's tender
and distended.

I can't get this line in.
- Dave?

- Doc got him in the ambulance.
- He's bad.

Would you stop moving?

- I feel kind of weird.
- You just got shot.

- It's a bitch!
- Your arm.

- His veins are collapsed.
- We'll get it.

- Some hands on this board?
- We should've called in sick.

Jimmy, come on.

On my count. One, two, three.

Police, don't move!

Put your hands up! - Stop!

Drop the gun!

Drop it!

Put that damn gun down!

If you don't, you'll get shot.

You're the fireman, right?

Met earlier at that fire.
You wanted to help?

- I'm a fireman.
- I know you are.

I warned them it was dangerous.
They wouldn't get back.

You did the right thing.
They know that now.

It's still burning.
Why don't you help?

Put the gun down.

Come on, buddy. You'll
get to help this time.

I'm a fireman.

Gunshot wound to the
flank. BP's 80/50, pulse 120.

Belly's tender and
distended, two IVs.

Any meds?

- No.
- How many more?

We've got a third victim
with a gunshot wound.

- How are you?
- I've felt better.

CBC, cross and type. Chem panel.

Chest and abdomen. Call Trauma
and alert them there's another coming up.

- How's Davey?
- Who's Davey?

Firefighter brought in earlier.

- He's in surgery.
- Is he okay?

One, two, three.

Let's get you
fixed. Any allergies?

No. JIMMY: No.

One gram of Ancef. We got it.

BP is 70. Pulse ox 92. Hang
two O-neg. Where's that x-ray?

Everybody out!

You don't want to be here.

- Is he gonna be okay?
- Yeah.

What about Haffley?

- He's in surgery.
- Better send for his wife and kids.

Is Joey with your mom?

You want me to call
her? She'll be nervous.

It's okay. I'll do it.

One, two, three.

We're good to go.

- You okay?
- Yeah.

- It wasn't our fault.
- I know.

We had no idea he was dangerous.

- I know.
- We're not shrinks.

I know. I wasn't
thinking about that.

Went to Fordham for a deferment.
Make you miserable for another year.

- What'd they say?
- No dice.

I guess it's settled.

I can reapply. I'll have to
write those damn essays.

Essays?

About wanting to
be a lawyer. I lied.

You don't want to?

I don't know. Maybe.

I'm starting to
figure things out.

Now I have to decide what I
wanna do for the rest of my life.

You know?

You driving?

Sure.

He did the taxpayers a favor.

Fifty years of free room and
medical from the state of New York.

He was mentally ill, Bos.

Why was he on the
street with a gun?

Where else would he be?

The state doesn't
provide any real services.

Are we mental-health workers?

I don't remember that class.

I'm not saying it's
our responsibility...

I think it's a shame.

What will you do
about your thing?

My "thing"?

When will you tell Fred?

I haven't decided if I will.

If you had another kid,
you two would figure it out.

The money? You guys love
each other. You'd make it work.

We've had so
much trouble lately.

The timing's not good.

Did you plan the first two?

That worked, didn't it?

Units in 55. Burglary alarm,
12497 between York and One.

97, York to One. 55-David.
You gotta tell Fred.

You can't do it alone.
It's his decision too.

Anyone call Brooke?

I left messages at her house.

His brother's driving
down from upstate.

I don't think you're a slut.

From what you said
earlier about you and Jimmy.

I've known you for five years.

You don't sleep with many guys.
You keep sleeping with this one.

- There was the hockey player.
- Hockey player?

The one at the
Garden. The concussion.

The one from the Maple
Leafs? You slept with that guy?

- He had a cute butt.
- He stopped pucks with his face.

Then there was the Dominican.

- And the UPS guy.
- Okay, okay.

And you.

The only one you
go back to is Jimmy.

I'd be a fool to get back
together with him. I can't trust him.

I don't know. You talk
about him all the time.

You worry about him.

Half the time you
want to stab him.

The other half you can't
keep your hands off him.

Maybe that's your true love.

Ms. Zambrano. He's awake.

- I got him.
- Okay.

Hey.

Hey.

How you doing?

- Joey?
- They don't want kids in here.

They said maybe tomorrow.

How's Davey?

He's still in surgery.

They had to bring in a
special heart surgeon.

They found the
guy. He shot himself.

- Dead?
- Yeah.

Turns out he was a fireman.
He was fired for erratic behavior.

I'm glad you're here.

Everyone from the station's
out there drinking coffee.

I've missed you.

Oh, my God!

I just got the message.

I went to work
and the desk had it.

Let me look at you.

I'm sorry. I was
babysitting at my sister's.

- Thanks for calling.
- Sure.

Are you okay, baby? - Yeah.

I'm sorry. But we only allow
one visitor back at a time.

Sure. Of course.

I'll, um... I'll bring
Joey by tomorrow.

- Call if you need anything.
- Thanks.

You remember this?

Huh?

Bill Withers!

Come on.

What do you think
of this light green...

with this cream
color as an accent?

Green?

You don't like green?

Sure. Green's great.

I think it'll look great.

No, really. Whatever.
Don't go by me.

I'd paint everything
off-white and be done with it.

What are you thinking about?

How unpredictable life is.

This was my parents' room.
They made love in this room.

They lived here
most of their lives.

Now it's you and me.

Is that okay?

I used to come in here when I
had nightmares, crawl into their bed.

I'd like our children to come in
when they have nightmares...

climb up into the bed.

Boy, I think I could be a
good father in this room.

Where have you been all my life?

- Hey.
- Hey.

- Want to get a drink?
- No. Thanks, anyway.

- Anniversary drink.
- I gotta get up early.

- What for?
- I'm going rollerblading with a girl.

- Rollerblading?
- Yeah. Well, she's cute.

- I can't believe it's been a year.
- Yeah. Like you say, time flies.

When I realized that your
anniversary was coming up...

I dug around in my dresser.

Used to be that we had
these Camelot pins made up...

for everybody at the 55. I
don't know why we stopped it.

When your dad was killed,
your mother gave me his.

I thought you might
want to have it.

We wore them on our
jackets. A brotherhood thing.

- Do you remember him wearing it?
- Yeah.

No big deal, just
thought you'd like it.

Thanks.

- So I'll see you tomorrow.
- Right.
