The Zeta Project (2001–2003): Season 1, Episode 4 - Change of Heart - full transcript

Zee and Ro go to a museum where Dr. Selig is giving a lecture.

ZETA:
My name is Zeta.

I was built as a weapon to destroy...

...but I will not destroy anymore.

RO:
Come on, let's go!

ZETA:
It's Bennet. Run!

This way.

RO:
Quick, Zee. Change.

ZETA:
Ro, look out!

[SCREAMS]

RO: We'll get you your freedom, Zee.
I know it.

RO:
Previously on The Zeta Project:

What are you?

I'm a U.S. Government infiltration unit...

...designed to replace
and destroy targeted individuals.

RO: Destroy?
ZETA: But I don't want to destroy anymore.

Who did program you?
That's who you need to see.

RO: They can tell Bennet
you're telling the truth.

I've identified the names
of the scientists who built me.

Nelson Arroyo, PhD in Robotics.

I was on the design team,
but my clearance was minimal.

I don't know anything.

You do know what happens
when Zeta finds his targets.

- He wants to meet you.
- Why?

- Why me?
- Because you helped build him.

RO: He doesn't wanna
hurt people anymore...

...but no one even believes
he could be peaceful.

He's hoping you'll help convince them.

The man you want to find is Eli Selig.

ARROYO:
Dr. Selig was the genius behind you.

He programmed every line,
got his hands in every system.

If anyone can convince people
you're not a killer, it's him.

Dr. Selig.

RO:
Sounds like we got a long road ahead.

- So you're sure this is the real deal?
- I scanned it on the Net.

Oh, then it must be true.

ZETA: Dr. Selig is scheduled
to make a rare appearance...

...at the Grandview Science Museum
lecturing on advanced neural simulators...

...and their practical applications.

Stop. I can't take the excitement.

[WHIRRING FROM ABOVE]

Must be a popular lecture.

I've got a read on the car's ID beacon.
It's a match.

- Light them up, agents.
- Roger that, sir.

Whoa!

BOTH:
Aah!

Got him. Going in for the collar.

BENNET:
West, stay back.

Pull up!

Huh?

- Can you fix it?
- There's no point.

Bennet must have traced its ID.
He'll only find us again.

This way.

Next time, she drives.

Just wondering if you've considered
Selig might not wanna see you.

Sure he will. He created me.

So? Somebody created me.

Doesn't look like they care
how I ended up.

Maybe you're not the robot
he always wanted.

- But he created me.
- Whatever.

Here. Fourth floor conference room.

Well, when we find him, don't start gushing
"Daddy" in front of everyone...

...just in case he doesn't react
the way you're--

TOUR GUIDE: Many of these
are experimental synthoid designs...

...that engineers have developed
over the years.

[ROBOT WHIRRING AND BEEPING]

Scientists believe that someday,
robots will look and act just like humans.

Even live among us without us knowing.

[CHUCKLES]

But I wouldn't expect that anytime soon.

GIRL: Yeah, me either.
MAN: Yeah.

[SPEAKING IN ROBOT]

Now, this model--

[ZETA SPEAKING IN ROBOT]

- Zee.
- What?

Why don't you just tell everyone
you have microchips for brains?

Actually, they're not microchips.
More like neuro-wafers.

These robots,
they're like a window to my past.

- My roots.
- Whoopee.

Roots belong underground
where you don't have to see them.

- You never wonder about your--?
- No.

The past is past.
It's the now that counts.

And right now, you're the one
who wants to find Dr. Selig.

Still plenty of time before
the next fusion-reactor demonstration.

- So why don't we move along to--?
CORA KAY: I have to go potty.

Past the antique-electric-car exhibit,
under the giant electromagnet...

...and left at the gyroscope display.

Thank you.

Cora Kay.

All I'm saying is, he might just turn you
over to the authorities like everyone else.

Maybe you're right.

I guess I do have to approach him carefully
and not make any--

Aah!

[GASPS]

MAN 1: What's going on?
MAN 2: Look at that.

WOMAN:
Is he all right?

[CHATTERING]

No way this can be good.

Hey, boss, fourth floor.
You won't believe it.

Just get him down.

No, wait.

Don't do anything yet.
I'm calling the feds.

BOSS [OVER RADIO]:
Don't let him out of your sight.

Oh, I don't think he's going anywhere.

[ZETA GROANING]

MAN 1: How does he do that?
MAN 2: How does he stay up there?

Ah, iron supplements?

[GRUNTS]

Huh?

[PEOPLE GASPING AND CHATTERING]

- Oops.
WOMAN: We should call someone.

ZETA:
Unh!

[ALL GASP]

Aah, look!

[CHATTERING]

Boss, he's on the move.
And there's a girl with him.

[PEOPLE GASPING]

Did you see that?

- Are you all right?
- How did you do that?

- Thanks for your help.
- Sarcasm, right?

I'll explain later.
Come on, we've been made.

Check this.

WOMAN: Did you see that?
MAN: That's amazing.

You there, stop!

Now, if you step this way, we'll
take a journey through the human body.

Please remember, keep your hands
and feet inside the pods at all times.

Quick, become somebody else.

Uh, hi.

Lost him. You check Level 3.

Yeah!

WOMAN:
Oh, look, honey.

That's the appendix.
That's what Grandpa had out.

One rule. As long as we're stuck here,
no suspicious behavior.

I can't see.

Yeah! Wow! Ha-ha-ha.

And by suspicious behavior,
I mean, try to act normal.

Right.

[GIGGLING]

Are you and your little brother
enjoying the ride?

Brother? Oh.

- Yeah, you bet.
- That's nice.

It's good when families
do things together.

Yeah. Thrill a minute.

After this, you should go see
the robot exhibit. Truly amazing.

Robots? No, not my thing.

BENNET: Make sure those destabilizers
are set to the right frequency.

If they're off, even a little...

...the sound waves won't disrupt
Zeta's gyroscopic balance.

He won't know what hit him, sir.

Remember,
we're going into a crowded museum.

Don't do anything until I give the order.

Hey, you know me.

Aah!

Uh, the frequency might be off.

Still no sign of the magnet man.

Got news for you.
Magnet man's a killer robot.

The feds are on their way,
so keep looking.

If you can't find the robot, find the girl.

See, Cora Kay?

The heart.

That's where you keep me, huh, Mama?

I tell her she's always in my heart
no matter how far apart we are.

Actually, a person
couldn't fit inside a heart.

It's only about the size of your fist,
with two atrium, two ventricles....

He reads a lot.

What did I just say?

ZETA: I must admit, there are things
about the heart that puzzle me.

Like what it means when people say
broken hearts, heartthrobs, heartache.

It means they're listening
to too much country music.

My daddy's heart broke.

It happened when she was 2.
She has her father's smile.

- How can you have someone's smile?
- It's just an expression.

Whose smile do you have?

- Nice to meet you.
- You too.

Dr. Selig should be finishing his lecture.

Next up, the fusion reactor.

Nuclear fusion is used to produce
enormous amounts of heat and energy.

It's the same process
that's happening all the time...

...on the surface of the sun.

This small-scale fusion reactor...

...generates enough energy
to light up this miniature city.

RO: What is it?
ZETA: Bennet.

- We should get out of here.
- But Dr. Selig is--

[WOMAN SCREAMS]

WOMAN:
My baby!

Cora Kay! Someone help her.

Where is she?

[WOMAN SOBBING]

TOUR GUIDE:
There's not much time.

When the reactor starts,
if that little girl is still inside--

I don't even wanna think about it.

Mommy, Mommy.

There's a little girl in there.

[GRUNTING]

[KEYPAD BEEPS]

Come on. Unh. Unh.

The override's jammed.

- Zee, we have to--
- I'm trying to listen.

GUARD: Only minutes till the next demo.
No way we'll get a tech here in time.

Better let the boss know.

Zee, we have to go.

Bennet, remember?

And from the looks of those weapons,
they're not here for a tour.

Cora Kay needs help.

RO: But--
- I'm her only chance, Ro.

[SIGHS]

Clear people out of there.
I'll call Emergency Services.

Where's my synthoid?

Sorry, we have a bigger problem.

[CRYING]
My baby.

Huh?

Don't worry. Zee will get her out.

Whoa. Hold it!

GUARD:
Ooh! Hey!

Hey, stay away from that.

[ALL GASP]

So he's not my brother.

GUARD:
We found our robot.

Move.

[SOBBING]

I know.

[GASPS]

- I was scared.
- Me too.

- Mommy.
- Cora Kay.

I'm here, baby. It's okay.

Thank you.

You have to reseal the reactor, quick,
or else the radiation leak could reach--

I understand. Clear the museum.

You heard him. Everybody out.

Boss, evacuate the building.
We may have a breach.

[ALARM BLARING]

BOSS [OVER PA]:
May I have your attention.

Please proceed to the nearest exit.
There is no cause for alarm.

- You too.
- No, I'm not leaving him.

[CHATTERING]

Dr. Selig?

Out of the way.

[TIMER BEEPING]

BENNET:
Show's over.

Step away from the synthoid.

- They're gonna destroy him.
- Not my problem.

In case you didn't notice,
he just saved our lives.

- You're coming with me.
- Unh!

BENNET:
It's over, Zeta.

Take him down.

[BOTH GASP]

[BOTH GRUNTING]

- You better get going.
- Thanks.

They're not stopping us so easy.

- West!
- Aah!

[CHUCKLES]

Come on, I have an idea.

[PANTING]

Freeze!

[SIGHS]

- Bus depot.
- Nice job in there.

Guess the Tin Man's got a heart after all.

I almost forgot to tell you, I saw him.

It was only for a second,
but I saw Dr. Selig.

That's great, Zee.

He really is out there.
And we're gonna find him.

- I envy you.
- But I thought you didn't care.

So did you have his smile?

RO:
Here, Zee. I got one for you.

It's an oil can. Get it?

- Tin Man, oil can.
ZETA: Actually, this item is misdated.

It's much older,
from the early 20th century.

- I could recategorize it.
RO: Never mind.
