The Young Riders (1989–1992): Season 3, Episode 16 - Dark Brother - full transcript

Buck's old friend is ill, both physically and spiritually. An old Indian prophet tells Buck there is a journey to a particular medicine man he must bring to town or his friend and those she loves will be destroyed. Buck has a hard time believing what's happening.

This thing ain't gonna do
nothing to nobody.

Come on let's get out of here.
Come on, let's go.

Stay here!

Whoa!

Turn back, Billy, now!

I don't think we should be here.

If you had listened to me,
have come this way
in the first place.

Besides,

this thing ain't gonna do
nothing to nobody.

Come on let's get out of here.
Come on, let's go.

Camille!

Camille, are you all right?

Let's go!

Whoa!

Stay back!

I'll bet she's a whole lot
prettier than she is old.

She's getting married
next month.

Oh! Whoa!

Get away. No!

You'll be all right. Easy.

Here you go.

No!

Camille, are you all right?

Buck, you don't look
any different than you did

He ain't been the same since
he got that letter.

Let's go!

Let's get out of here.
Just hold on. Go!

Buck, you don't look
any different than you did

He ain't been the same since
he got that letter.

I told you, she's just a friend.

- Mmm-hmm.
- An old friend.

Looks like she's here, buck.
I like how she looks, too.

- She's getting married, Cody.
- How soon?

- Mmm-hmm.
- An old friend.

She wouldn't happen to be
an old pretty friend,
would she?

I'll bet she's a whole lot
prettier than she is old.

She's getting married
next month.

I guess it doesn't matter
what I look like now.

Looks like she's here, buck.
I like how she looks, too.

You look so, uh, grown up.

You look good, too, buck.

It's been so long.

She had a fall.

You must be bill Barlow.

Camille.

Hello, buck.

You look so, uh, grown up.

- Well, I'm very happy
for the both of you.
- Thanks.

It's been so long.

- What happened here?
- Oh, it's nothing.

Buck, aren't you gonna
offer them a place to stay?

Uh, that's all right.
I'm sure there's
a hotel in town.

You must be bill Barlow.

Yeah, I must be.

I'm buck cross.
Glad to know you.

Umm, Camille wrote,
told me you two
were getting married.

Yeah, we sure are.

- Well, I'm very happy
for the both of you.
- Thanks.

Uh, that's all right.
I'm sure there's
a hotel in town.

Well, you can stay,
uh, for dinner.

I'd like you to meet my friends.

You folks must be awful tired
after such a long journey.

Buck, aren't you gonna
offer them a place to stay?

No, but it seems like
a good place
to start raising a family.

Never figured
you'd be one to settle
in the city, Camille.

I'm surprised
you didn't have trouble,
traveling alone like that.

Some of them tribes ain't
known for their hospitality.

Well, maybe so,
but we didn't see any Indians.

Sure.

Buck says you come all the way
from Denver.

- I'll get a doctor.
- Oh, god, Camille.

Buck says you come all the way
from Denver.

Yeah. We're headed over
to St. Joe to get married.

Billy's gonna take over
his father's business.

I'm surprised
you didn't have trouble,
traveling alone like that.

You come right through
Indian country..

Some of them tribes ain't
known for their hospitality.

Never figured
you'd be one to settle
in the city, Camille.

Well, people change.

Don't worry, buck.
Doc will take care of her.

Thanks for all your help, doc.
I'll check on her
in the morning.

Well, maybe so,
but we didn't see any Indians.

- Camille!
- Camille, are you all right?

- Is she gonna be okay, doc?
- It's too early to tell.

Strange how quick that fever
come over her.

Well, all we can do is just,
uh, keep her cool
and comfortable.

Could it have anything to do
with that bump on her head?

Little bird's her Indian name?

When she showed up,
I was surprised to see
she wasn't a kiowa.

- Camille!
- Camille, are you all right?

- I'll get a doctor.
- Oh, god, Camille.

But I'd like to reserve
judgment until I see how she
makes it through the night.

I could sit with you,
if you'd like.

Thanks for all your help, doc.
I'll check on her
in the morning.

- Is she gonna be okay, doc?
- It's too early to tell.

It can be hard seeing someone
after so long.

Could it have anything to do
with that bump on her head?

Maybe.

But I'd like to reserve
judgment until I see how she
makes it through the night.

Come on, buck. There's
nothing more we can do.

I could sit with you,
if you'd like.

I can take care of her myself.

When she showed up,
I was surprised to see
she wasn't a kiowa.

She was the only survivor
of the comanche attack
on a wagon train.

It can be hard seeing someone
after so long.

I didn't think it would be.
Little bird and I
were so close.

Little bird's her Indian name?

Until she was twelve.

What happened then?

She went back to her people.

She was the only survivor
of the comanche attack
on a wagon train.

My tribe found her,
raised her as their own.

Until she was twelve.

It's no wonder
you were surprised
at how she looked.

It's not that, Lou.

It's just...

Boy, seeing her
after all that time.

It's no wonder
you were surprised
at how she looked.

You never know
what might bring it back.

How's Camille?

She was up all night.

She went back to her people.

Boy, seeing her
after all that time.

Billy?

I don't see it anymore.

That don't mean
it's gone forever, buck.

You never know
what might bring it back.

The doctor's up with her now.

She'll be fine.
She was always strong.

She used to have
this light in her eyes.

I don't see it anymore.

I know how close
the two of you were.

That was a long time ago.

That's right, it was.

And that part of her life
is over now.

I didn't come here
to argue that,

Billy?

Billy?

I didn't come here
to argue that,

I'm just worried about Camille.

Well, she's my concern now.

- I just want to help.
- She don't need it,
you understand?

She was up all night.

Her fever's getting worse.

The doctor's up with her now.

I know how close
the two of you were.

- I just want to help.
- She don't need it,
you understand?

I don't take with those
Indian ways of yours
and she don't neither no more.

- Just stay away from her.
- Mister Barlow, I think
you better come upstairs.

- Just stay away from her.
- Mister Barlow, I think
you better come upstairs.

Why don't you come, too, buck?
Maybe you can shed some light
on a few things.

What do you make of that?
Is it Indian?

She was raised Indian,
wasn't she?

Any idea what she was saying?

She kept repeating, "kode hete".

I've never heard of it.

What do you make of that?
Is it Indian?

Yes, it's Indian.

I thought you said
she was raised kiowa.

She's been doing this
for some time.

She was raised Indian,
wasn't she?

I thought you said
she was raised kiowa.

But she was speaking some
other language,

Camille only knew kiowa.

Any idea what she was saying?

I've never heard of it.

Kode hete.

I ain't neither.
What's the doctor telling you?

Nothing.

Well, son, people have a fever
they're liable to do anything.

I wouldn't pay
any attention to her.

I just wish I knew
what kode hete meant.

It is a name.

I just wish I knew
what kode hete meant.

I wouldn't pay
any attention to her.

She's liable to say
whatever comes to her mind.

From a tongue not spoken
since the ancients
walked this earth.

- So how could she be speaking it?
- So how could she be speaking it?

Perhaps it was not she
that was speaking.

Do you always talk to dogs?

Only when they talk back.

Nice to see you again...

Oh, that was a long time ago.

Do you always talk to dogs?

What did you mean about
someone else speaking?

I think it is possible...

Only when they talk back.

What did you mean about
someone else speaking?

I think it is possible...

that someone is trying to
steal your friend's soul.

- You're crazy.
- Maybe.

That someone is trying to
steal your friend's soul.

Why?

Soul may be very pure.

These spirits
would not just choose anyone.

Did she say something like
"ket-tena-chota-chi"?

And so are those who love her.

Your friend is in great danger.

And so are those who love her.

Has she tried to harm those
that are close to her?

Camille would never do that.

- You're crazy.
- Maybe.

Did she say something like
"ket-tena-chota-chi"?

Well, I've never
seen anything like it.

Come on, my daughter
will watch her while we, uh,
take another look at that.

I know what you mean.

Huh, then I'm not crazy.

What are you talking about?

Hmm?

All I was doing was putting
a cold towel on her forehead
when she bit me.

Camille would never do that.

I'm wasting my time
talking to you,
old man.

All I was doing was putting
a cold towel on her forehead
when she bit me.

The strangest thing,
she wouldn't let go.

Well, I've never
seen anything like it.

Hmm.

How else would I have gotten
here?

What do you want?

It's what you want
that is important.
You want to help your friend.

To make amends.

How did you?

- I don't need your help.
- Of course not.

I'm just an old man
that talks to dogs.

But there is a medicine man
named white feather.

It's what you want
that is important.
You want to help your friend.

To make amends.

Hmm.

You following me?

How else would I have gotten
here?

But it is a journey of
personal cost.

What do you mean?

It means you have to pay me
50 dollars.

Now, he's supposed to be
very good
with troubled spirits.

I've heard of him.

He has big medicine.
I know how to find him.

But it is a journey of
personal cost.

It means you have to pay me
50 dollars.

I knew it.

But there is a medicine man
named white feather.

Now, he's supposed to be
very good
with troubled spirits.

You will lose your friend
forever unless you
make this journey.

It is up to you my friend,
to bring her
out of the darkness.

To give her back her light.

Listen to me.

You will lose your friend
forever unless you
make this journey.

What are you doing?

But don't worry.
It's not your fault.

It will pass.

Telling fortunes.

Perhaps you
would like to hear yours.

I'm not one for fortunes.

As long as it doesn't take long.

What are you doing?

Telling fortunes.

Oh! Confusion.

Calamity.

Blame.

But don't worry.
It's not your fault.

Come close.

Oh! Confusion.

I'm not one for fortunes.

But you should be.

That's for the fates to decide.

Here in the middle of nowhere
with some man
I know nothing about.

What do you need to know?

Well, how about your name?

It will pass.

What's not my fault?

It shall be revealed.

I've been many places.

If you're lying to me,
there's gonna be hell to pay.

Woo, then we'd better hope
I'm not.

- I don't believe this.
- What?

How do you know white feather?

I've been many places.

It shall be revealed.

Well, how about your name?

My name?

You know, what people call you
when they want to
get your attention.

Well, you don't have to.

The important thing is,
you're here with your friend.

- I don't believe this.
- What?

These crazy stories about
soul-stealing spirits.

Well, you don't have to.

Do you mind telling me
where we're gonna find
white feather?

Thunder mesa.

Thunder mesa?
That's holy ground.

You know, what people call you
when they want to
get your attention.

Hmm.

Bob.

The important thing is,
you're here with your friend.

Here in the middle of nowhere
with some man
I know nothing about.

It's the shortest way.

We're gonna lose half a day
going around this thing.

We must go across.

Bob?
That's not an Indian name.

That's why it gets my attention.

Thunder mesa?
That's holy ground.

Where better to look for
a holy man?

So, Indian Bob,

do you mind telling me
where we're gonna find
white feather?

- I'd lay my life down for her.
- Well, now's your chance.

Whew. That's a deep one.

- Did you know about this?
- Yes.

We must go across.

- We?
- Yes, we have to jump.

Only direction this wagon
is gonna go is down.

Whew. That's a deep one.

- Did you know about this?
- Yes.

Then why did you bring us here?

It's the shortest way.

I'm done listening to you.

How badly do you want to
save your friend?

We don't need
the wagon any longer.

What do you think
these horses are gonna jump?

- How is she doing?
- Didn't hear a peep all night.

You brought flowers.
That's so romantic.

How badly do you want to
save your friend?

What do you think
these horses are gonna jump?

Have you asked them?

I'm done listening to you.

- I'd lay my life down for her.
- Well, now's your chance.

Mount up.

- You're up bright and early.
- Ah, I couldn't sleep much.

- How is she doing?
- Didn't hear a peep all night.

Where is she?

- What are you talking about?
- Has anyone been up here?

- No. Well, except an Indian,
but he didn't do anything.
- An Indian?

You brought flowers.
That's so romantic.

Well, we're planning
on getting married.

Dogs, horses. What's next?

- No. Well, except an Indian,
but he didn't do anything.
- An Indian?

So what's your plan?

- You think too much.
- Somebody out here has to.

Where is she?

- Where's cross, marshal?
- I ain't seen him today.

What's eating you?

He took Camille.
And I'm gonna get her back.

They thought about it.
Let's go.

Dogs, horses. What's next?

So what's your plan?

They thought about it.
Let's go.

That was something.

You'll find there comes a time
when there's
no room for doubts.

- I don't need no help.
- I ain't offering it.

I'm sending them with you.

I'd hate to see you
do something you might find it
hard to live with.

You'll find there comes a time
when there's
no room for doubts.

- Where's cross, marshal?
- I ain't seen him today.

That was something.

He took Camille.
And I'm gonna get her back.

- Whoa, whoa.
- Now, hold on, Barlow.

You sure about that?

As sure as the fellow at the
stables who saw

her get into a wagon with him
and ride the hell off.

He's had his eye on
her ever since we came here.

Son, I've known that boy
for a long time.

If he took her, he must have
had a good reason.

I'll go find you another vine.
Besides,
I got to stretch my legs.

We better get to
the bottom of this.
You three saddle up.

- I don't need no help.
- I ain't offering it.

Why don't you lift that end up
and wrap it around tightly?

Her get into a wagon with him
and ride the hell off.

- Buck would never do
something like that.
- The hell he wouldn't.

He's had his eye on
her ever since we came here.

If he took her, he must have
had a good reason.

- Well, she's gonna be my wife,
not his.
- No one's arguing that.

We better get to
the bottom of this.
You three saddle up.

It's too short.

I'll go find you another vine.
Besides,
I got to stretch my legs.

I'd hate to see you
do something you might find it
hard to live with.

Why don't you lift that end up
and wrap it around tightly?

I'm frightened.

Buck!

I'm frightened.

I'll take good care of you,
little bird, I promise.

No room for doubt.

Camille!

Camille?

I didn't have a choice.

- Of course you did.
- I didn't have to think twice
about it.

I need the 50 dollars.

- Of course you did.
- I didn't have to think twice
about it.

That just means you love her.

I'm glad you saved her.

You could have died trying
to save her.

I didn't have a choice.

They couldn't have just
disappeared.

Well, there's no way
they jumped it.

I'm glad you saved her.

- She's grown on you?
- No.

I need the 50 dollars.

Well, there's no way
they jumped it.

Well, they must've
gone around.
Tracks or no tracks.

The darkness.

The night will be here soon.

Well, they must've
gone around.
Tracks or no tracks.

Making a sacred circle.

We will bless it
and it will protect us.

Camille, no!

We will bless it
and it will protect us.

Protect us from what?

What are you doing?

Protect us from what?

What we fear?

- What's that?
- I don't know.

The night will be here soon.

We should rest.

- What's that?
- I don't know.

Kode hete.

He will try to take her soon.

Camille, no!

Your friend grows weak.
I'm afraid for her.

Of his older brother
and he soon took his life.

The tribe cast him out.

Your friend grows weak.
I'm afraid for her.

You don't know her,
she's a fighter.

Yes, but the "dark one" is
growing strong within her.

- Is he a person?
- He was.

Thousands of years ago
there were two sons
of a great chief.

Yes, but the "dark one" is
growing strong within her.

The "dark one"?
What do you mean?

Kode hete.

To do eternal battle against
his dark brother.

And so it was
the good brother's spirit
was born again

who's kode hete?

- Is he a person?
- He was.

The eldest one was good
and well loved by the tribe.

Ah, but the youngest one,
he was much trouble.

In time he grew
hateful and jealous

of his older brother
and he soon took his life.

The tribe cast him out.

For revenge, he cursed
the earth and his people.

And he swore that someday
he would return
and do them great harm.

Thousands of years ago
there were two sons
of a great chief.

The eldest one was good
and well loved by the tribe.

When he died
the tribe took his body
to some secret place.

There he was buried so
as to trap his spirit in the
earth.

When he died
the tribe took his body
to some secret place.

And so it was
the good brother's spirit
was born again

as a man with the power
to be guardian to keep his
brother's spirit in the earth.

And he swore that someday
he would return
and do them great harm.

As a man with the power
to be guardian to keep his
brother's spirit in the earth.

The dark brother is kode hete.

Then the chief called upon
his eldest son

to do eternal battle against
his dark brother.

To allow the spirit
of kode hete to enter
into your friend's body.

There he was buried so
as to trap his spirit in the
earth.

Then the chief called upon
his eldest son

The dark brother is kode hete.

That's some story.

Why would he choose Camille?

Perhaps she was
in that forbidden place
when it was desecrated.

She could never do that.
She has the heart of a kiowa.

If you're looking
for a shortcut
out of this lifetime,

you're about to find it.

Na-tun-hite!

Kode hete desires
and seeks revenge in her body.

The elder brother
must have fallen

to allow the spirit
of kode hete to enter
into your friend's body.

It's more than a story.

This is where they bedded down.

I'd say we are
about eight hours behind them.

Well, perhaps she had no...

choice.

Kode hete desires
and seeks revenge in her body.

Why would he choose Camille?

I'd say we are
about eight hours behind them.

What do you make of
these rocks, kid?

I read about a sacred hoop once.

Na-tun-hite!

- These fellahs seem to
know you, Barlow.
- Ar-ono-state!

She could never do that.
She has the heart of a kiowa.

Well, perhaps she had no...

I hope it works for us.

If you're looking
for a shortcut
out of this lifetime,

We...

We killed an Indian
with our wagon.
It was an accident.

I swear it was.

- These men saw it happen.
- Hell of a time
for a confession.

I read about a sacred hoop once.

It said that danger
can't enter it
without being invited.

I hope it works for us.

Now would be
as good a time as any
to get it off your chest.

We...

Ah, something good, I hope.

I think you got
some explaining to do.

- These fellahs seem to
know you, Barlow.
- Ar-ono-state!

If you've got something
you haven't told us

now would be
as good a time as any
to get it off your chest.

We will protect him.

- These men saw it happen.
- Hell of a time
for a confession.

- Ar-ono-state!
- Wait!

What is he saying, kid?

Ah, something good, I hope.

I think you got
some explaining to do.

Yeah. I suppose I do.

This is sacred ground.

- It's forbidden to
enter this land.
- Not for a true kiowa.

This is sacred ground.

I owe it to her.

Just after little bird
and I were chosen
by the elders to be wed

yeah. I suppose I do.

- I don't know.
- But you've come this far.

- Why?
- I told you I love her.

Many men
would not come this far
for love alone.

I'm only half kiowa.

Oh, I see.

They took little bird
because she was white.

And is it this other half
that makes you
fearful of this place?

Maybe.

- I don't know.
- But you've come this far.

Oh, I see.

And is it this other half
that makes you
fearful of this place?

Little bird begged me not to go.

She said something
terrible would happen.

Many men
would not come this far
for love alone.

There must be something more.

I owe it to her.

Several men were asked
to go on a hunt.

She said something
terrible would happen.

I didn't believe her.

You're no fool.

That's a relief.

Just after little bird
and I were chosen
by the elders to be wed

several men were asked
to go on a hunt.

Now that I found her,
I don't want to let her go.

I didn't believe her.

When we were gone
hunters raided the camp and...

We must go.

Only a fool or a great shaman
would not fear entering
such a place.

And murdered
all the women and children.

Now that I found her,
I don't want to let her go.

You don't have to be sorry
if there's no shame
in your heart.

They took little bird
because she was white.

I was just scared, I guess.

And if there is?

Then you must face
your demons. Soon.

White feather?

Yes, my young friend.

I was just scared, I guess.

Those Indians,
I was so sure they would kill
Camille and me.

Only a fool or a great shaman
would not fear entering
such a place.

Things would have been
a whole lot worse if it
hadn't been for this circle.

And Camille.
She doesn't even have that.

Yes, my young friend.

But come. We must go.

It wasn't your fault
the lightning spooked
those horses.

But things would have been
a lot better if you hadn't
kept quiet about it.

Don't make sense,
them running off like that.

From the way you described it,
it sounds like you may have
killed their medicine man.

Probably scared them as much
as they scared you.

Those Indians,
I was so sure they would kill
Camille and me.

Don't make sense,
them running off like that.

Probably scared them as much
as they scared you.

I didn't mean to kill anyone,
it was just an accident.

It wasn't your fault
the lightning spooked
those horses.

But things would have been
a lot better if you hadn't
kept quiet about it.

Things would have been
a whole lot worse if it
hadn't been for this circle.

Darkness is nothing.

Darkness is the lack of truth.

And Camille.
She doesn't even have that.

- You ought to get some rest.
- No, we must begin when
the sun goes down.

This is the darkness
that is within you.

Darkness is nothing.

- You ought to get some rest.
- No, we must begin when
the sun goes down.

There can be no darkness in
the presence of light.

It is the absence of love.

Don't listen.

It is kode hete.

Light is the flame.
It is the source.

There can be no darkness in
the presence of light.

Light is the flame.
It is the source.

Light is understanding.
It is love.

This is the darkness
that is within you.

- Why did you let it happen?
- Little bird?

Don't listen.

This is the light
that will force
the darkness out!

Camille!

- Buck.
- Camille.

This is the light
that will force
the darkness out!

Do you understand?

Yes.

He is the darkness
that has no remorse.

Do you understand?

I call upon thee,
who spilled
his brother's blood,

I call upon the dark one
to come out of
this woman's body.

I call upon thee,
who spilled
his brother's blood,

he speaks lies.

We meet again.

Your medicine is weak, brother.

It is not my medicine
that you should fear.

I call upon the dark one
to come out of
this woman's body.

I have come to the end
of my journey.

As for you,

to come forward!

We meet again.

You! You're the good brother.

It is about to begin.

What do you mean?

It means,

your medicine is weak, brother.

It is not my medicine
that you should fear.

As for you,

it is about to begin.

It hurts.

White feather!

Buck.

It hurts.
The ropes are cutting me.

Be quiet.

It hurts.
The ropes are cutting me.

I call upon he
who brings hatred.

I call upon you
to leave this woman!

I am the light
that will force you out.

I call upon the dark one
to leave this woman.

I call upon he who spilled
his brother's blood.

This is the darkness
that is within you.

This is the light that will
bring that darkness out.

I am the light
that will force you out.

Out, come out!
Come out!

They hurt me.

This is the darkness
that is within you.

Buck.

This is the darkness
that is within you.

This is the light that will
bring that darkness out.

Little bird, if I knew what
was going to happen.
How could I?

I call upon he who spilled
his brother's blood.

I call upon he
who brings hatred.

I call upon you
to leave this woman!

Out, come out!
Come out!

Buck.

Why did you leave me?

Your words mean nothing.

Do you know what they did to me?

You can't trick me.

Again and again.

Little bird.

What happened?

Buck.

You look better.

I remember stampeding horses...

It's over.

Buck.

Little bird.

I also dreamt of the day
you went on the hunt.

It's better that way.

It's like I was dreaming.

And neither was he.

I should have stayed
with you that day.

They would have killed you.

I can't remember much of
what happened.

It's better that way.

The day
the buffalo hunters came.

Still.

No.

I remember stampeding horses...

by a river.

- Am I crazy?
- No.

In other places.

I hope you'll let it go now.

In other places.

With other people.

Do you really believe that?

They would have killed you.

- Camille.
- Billy.

You and I were meant to serve
in some other way.

I know you've carried
this pain heavy in your heart.

Mmm, I was...
Oh, I was so worried
about you.

- How are you?
- Buck took care of me.

I wanted to tell you this
for a long time.

I hope you'll let it go now.

We plan on doing that.

Yeah.

I sort of figured that.

- How are you?
- Buck took care of me.

Yeah.

I, um, I suppose
I owe you an apology.

Well, it's getting late.
We best get heading back
to rock creek.

Oh, I was.

I was hoping maybe
you all could...

That's the man I told you about.

White feather.

Not necessary.
Just take good care
of each other.

I was hoping maybe
you all could...

Could help me with something
on the way back.

I do now.

That's the man I told you about.

The one we killed
with our wagon.

Do you know him?

I do now.
