The Wonder Years (2021–…): Season 1, Episode 18 - Goose Grease - full transcript

When Dean comes down with chickenpox on his way to a hunting trip with Bill and Grandaddy Clisby, Lillian forces the three of them to quarantine together; Clisby pushes homemade remedies on them out of his mistrust of doctors.

What is all this?

Dad taught me how to change the spark plugs and oil.

Learned almost as fast as Bruce.

Is Dad teaching you how to move the car?

He didn't want to at first.

Said oil and grease was "ladylike".

But saving $2.50 on proofreading is beautiful.

Dean, tell your mom to get the Instamatic

and take a picture.

It's not easy being the youngest of three kids.

The eldest child receives the full attention of its parents.

The second son receives a little less,

but it still gets that shine.

And then you come to the third child.

You're lucky if they point the camera at you.

I don't even know if this is me.

Even though I'm the youngest,

I wasn't going to miss the legal bonding experiences

that my brothers had with our family.

Dad, I want to go hunting with you and Grandpa Clisby.

Where did you get a crazy idea like that from?

You know those bunnies aren't sleeping, right?

Wouldn't a movie be more fun?

I can see the morning schedule.

But when Bruce went hunting,

it was the Williams men together.

I want to do the same things he did.

Sounds important or something.

And I have my new camera ready to capture everything.

I'll think about it.

You know that's a no, right?

It's fine. If you won't take me,

I'll have to ask Grandpa Clisby.

Bill Williams, you know I won't let my son go into the woods

with an old myope and a shotgun.

I think it's a yes.

Shall we stop again?

I'll stop to take a piss every 15 minutes if I want to.

One of the perks of getting older, so you can't take that away from me.

So how many rabbits did Bruce kill the first time?

- I don't remember. - Because I'm going to bend,

maybe at treble.

Why is he fucking?

Must be mosquitoes.

Of car?

False alarm.

Is the boy already complaining about bugs?

We're not in the forest yet. mature.

We're not bugs, Dad, chicken pox.

What's up, Dean?

Several children caught chickenpox at school this week.

And I only know now?

After spending three hours with you in the car?

I want to yell at you,

but I need to take another pee break. Again.

Yes. Definitely chickenpox.

I've never seen my mother walk so fast.

She was avoiding me like the plague, literally.

What was there? You're scaring me.

Honey, nothing to worry about.

But I never had chickenpox,

and you are very contagious. And you two.

You will have to stay in this house separately. Kim?

Why so much noise? I barely hear my thoughts.

Stop. Don't move. Dean has chickenpox.

It won't make me sick.

- I will be cured of mononucleosis now. - What?

Said it was a persistent cold.

Let's worry about Dean now.

Go pack your bags.

You and I are going to stay at grandma's.

- No need to repeat. - Waiting.

So it will be me, grandma Clisby and dad

in the same house alone for a week?

Can't leave me with them, Lil.

And where do you think you're going?

I am going home. It's dinner time.

- It's half past four, grandpa. - Damn it. It will cool down.

Clisby, have you ever had chickenpox?

I've had everything from the Spanish flu,

mustard gas, viruses. I'm immune to everything.

Dad, take this seriously.

Chickenpox at your age is dangerous.

And I won't let you go home

to infect Mother Williams. She has suffered a lot.

It's fine, but I'm not going to be happy about it.

- Dinner is on the stove. - But it's just boiling water.

Vai ter that I finished it.

I love you dear. Take care. Goodbye.

Maybe I was going to have the bonding experience after all.

I have dinner at five,

and then one of you will have to prepare my bath.

You will sleep outside.

I won't lie.

This is going to be difficult, very difficult.

Are you kidding? This is going to be so good!

We can finally be together like we planned.

Maybe play cards, swap some stories.

Trs geraes de ns, homens Williams.

It will be two generations if you don't stop chattering.

How about not threatening my son?

I was talking about me.

First, we're going to have to divide up the household chores.

Since you were an Army cook,

It's only fair that you cook for us.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I was in the infantry, like a real man.

So I'll shoot the first one who tries to break in.

- Well thought. - Dean, do your chores.

And stop cooking. That's how it spreads.

What chores are you going to do, Dad?

I don't do chores. I never did.

My mother made it for me until I was 16,

and my wife took over after that.

Guess what, Dad? It's the 60's.

Men have evolved since their generation.

We are no longer helpless at home.

This is the same man who didn't know any of his children

until the day after their birth.

I'm old and weak.

Isn't that what you always say?

This chicken pox can bring me down.

Got it, so now that there are tasks on the table,

are you taking this seriously?

Go wash the dishes, Dad.

It was finally happening.

All of us Williams men were going to be brutes together.

It would be like chasing rabbits,

minus the hunting and the rabbits.

Dean, stop cooking.

Your mother will kill me if I get a chickenpox scar.

More than coa so much.

There's only one way to resolve this.

Drug.

God did not remove Adam's rib

for him to scrub a pan.

You will get used to the tasks.

Doing it together can be fun.

You know what's fun? Earn money.

Want to earn 50 cents a day to do my chores?

While I hoped we'd be rough together

would create a memory for life,

I couldn't refuse such a proposal.

And don't tell your father.

Gosh, I'm a little rusty.

If the chicken pox doesn't kill us, this chili will.

I don't know how we're going to eat anymore, do you?

Pr-aqueao oven at 180 graus and place for 30 minutes.

That was before the N95 masks, folks.

Mom, I really, really missed your food.

I figured it out, Dean.

Dean, I see you're fucking around.

Brought something for the itch.

- You need to use it. - No.

I will not use the white man's medicine.

I know you don't trust doctors,

but I could not avoid them forever. See.

What am I stopping?

Have fun.

I have my own meds.

Much better than any doctor.

You will see.

That's good. My goose has arrived.

Where did that come from?

I called my goose guy.

Why do you need a goose?

To make goose fat.

If grandpa Clisby thought

who was clearing things up, he was wrong.

Does anyone know what a prewash is?

Well, no.

Made you healthy in your childhood, son.

It left me stinking and killing flies as a child.

Grandpa will teach me how to make goose fat.

Junte-se ansea we will be

the three generations of Williams men making memories.

I will not participate in this nonsense.

Don't pay attention to him.

I am going to learn magic from goose fat.

Doesn't that make you feel better?

It actually helped with the itching.

And my skin was amazing!

It's never been so soft and flexible.

I can smell you from inside.

It means it's working.

It makes me feel nostalgic for home.

Dad, spend some time.

Even after three we could...

Not this one. Here come the flies!

They bite!

Not the eyes!

By the fourth day, we had fallen into a rut.

- I was reading this. - I know.

But dad and grandma were still pissing each other off,

so there was zero binding happening.

And stop scratching, Dad. Use the cream Lilian brought.

I won't give a damn about the charlatans there at the pharmacy.

Goose fat works very well.

It just makes my house smell like a barn.

If you don't want me here, I'll be happy to leave.

I'm tired of you trying to tell me what to do,

trying to tame me.

How many goose faces do you have?

Oh, Cory!

- Good to see you, Cliff. - Sorry, Dean.

Mrs. Fry made me bring my homework.

I tried to say I was dying

And I wasn't going to use algebra in the sky, but she didn't believe it.

Okay, at least you tried.

I pretended to be upset, but secretly,

I was missing that beautiful arithmetic.

When Vivian heard they were cooking,

she sent me here with this casserole.

- Let me in. - What are you doing?

Ainda we are contagious.

It's okay. Cory can't come in,

but I can because I already had chickenpox.

I'm immune.

Sit down, face.

Can I sit on the good sofa?

You must be pretty desperate.

Are you hungry? Thirsty?

- Can I pour you a whiskey? - It's four o'clock, Bill.

Boy, you are eye candy.

I see that being cooped up in here hasn't affected you at all.

So what did I miss at the barbershop?

Did Hal fix Ida?

You won't believe it.

So Keisa asked about me?

She has asked. She wanted to come visit you,

but her parents think chickenpox is from the devil.

They said the same thing about wearing glasses.

What will Lester do with the termination?

- What do you think? - It won't make Jesus proud.

That's it.

And he tried to say he has Eartha Kitt's phone number.

I've been trying to connect with them,

like Bruce, but every time we get close to it,

something gets in the way.

Hey man, what if you gave me a hug?

You will get chickenpox.

I know! I have a social studies test on Friday,

and I didn't study.

And if I time it right,

I can get rid of the church too.

Cory Long, don't take one more step.

Boy, have you lost your mind?

You know your mother will blame me

if you get sick. Let's go home.

Are you going? She has just arrived.

Yes, stay longer.

We can play cards.

I know you are delusional because you want to lose money.

See you later, people.

- Dean, play here. - Go to the car.

You know what would be a good idea?

The three of us play cards.

They can even teach me poker.

You don't know how to play poker? I should have known.

- How old are you? Seven? - I have 12.

It won't teach you how to play. And he has no money.

- He has. - I've.

If it's going to help us pass the time, let's go.

Just don't tell your mother.

That was it.

My last chance to hook up with the men in my family,

and I wasn't going to let anything spoil it.

We broke so many family rules that night,

playing poker, not using cup holders,

pissing through the back door.

Mom would have killed us.

pair of kings

I have eights and sixes.

That's something, right?

Son, that's a full house.

- This will be good. - Yes.

Beginner's luck. Let's play again.

Deal the cards.

Grandma Clisby was right.

My luck started to run out after that.

The secret of poker is bluffing.

Pretend I'm lying to Kim

about why it arrived late, but better.

Don't worry, boy. I win at poker

since I learned to play in the trench in the Great War.

What was it like fighting in WW1?

It's kind of new to these stories.

I'm old enough to play poker.

T, I think I can tell a story.

And that's when I took down the Red Bar.

No, it didn't drop. He didn't drop.

When I came back, there was no way to stop it.

I heard trench warfare, mustard gas poisoning,

and how he single-handedly saved Paris

while falling in love with Josephine Baker.

And one of your war stories, Dad?

Sim, I told him about that time

that you cut your finger while cutting a tomato

during the ham sandwich battle.

Your brother Bruce and I fought in combat

while your father banged pots

in the safety of the kitchen.

They say an army goes into battle with a full belly.

That you got right.

Are you feeling well? Need to lie down?

No, I'm fine. Let's keep playing.

And we marched through this city,

and I saw a beautiful little French girl...

It's not appropriate, father.

That was it.

It was the bonding moment I had been waiting for.

I was feeling happy, redeemed, I was feeling...

very very hot.

Are you okay, Dean?

You are burning. We need to take him to a doctor.

No, no let's go.

You cannot trust these doctors.

They say they'll take your blood,

and they don't say what they're going to do with him.

Don't listen, that's nonsense he hears in the barbershop.

Remember your cousin Darnell?

He is being treated by doctors

in Tuskegee for some special studies,

but I'm telling you, the man is only getting worse.

That the history books still don't talk enough about.

Maybe we should call it a night, then.

No, we have to keep playing!

Why is this so important, Dean?

Because you and Grandma and Bruce have all these things in common.

They go hunting and fishing and they do all these manly things,

and I can't do any of that.

I just want to be part of the Williams men...

At least one time.

Dean, this is crazy.

You will always be a Williams man...

In joy and in sadness.

So, can we still play?

It's my turn to deal.

There goes another pair of clean underwear.

Dean, Dean, Dean!

Dean! Dean? Are you listening to me?

Alright soldiers,

time to go over the top and lamber those Germans.

He's delusional and talking nonsense.

We need to go now.

Everything is fine.

- Dad! - What?

My God, my baby.

I'm fine, mom.

You will live, right?

Was Kim being nice to me?

Hell, I must be sicker than I thought.

Thank God. Is he okay?

Dean may have a blood infection

resulting from chickenpox.

I'll need to take blood to confirm.

No, I won't take a bite.

Honey, it's only going to hurt a little.

Don't you know they take your blood and do something secret with it?

Yes, that's why they call it medical practice,

because they practice on you.

- Dad. - Exactly.

Give me goose fat and I'll be fine.

what? Goose fat?

Pai.

You need to stop.

You who put this foolishness in his head,

so there's a way to get it out.

It's fine.

It's fine.

Maybe you should listen to the doctor just this once.

But you wouldn't let him take your blood, grandma.

You told me.

Maybe if we do this together?

Would you do that?

Only if you do this to me.

- It's fine. - He knows?

Bill hasn't seen a doctor in years.

Maybe I should do that too.

Of course, I will draw blood

- my body. - You too, daddy?

Who wants to go first?

So if it's me,

I want a black doctor, but no offense.

Please, of course you meant to offend.

Are you sure you went to medical school?

Was it a women's medical school?

Were there men in that college?

This was not quite the bonding experience I wanted

as we took the hunting trip last week,

but seeing the sacrifices my family made for me,

I felt a new closeness that I hadn't expected.

Now we would be like blood draughts.

Does your husband accept you being a doctor?

what husband?

I'll tell you when I meet him.

It saw? That's what happens when you get an education.

It was intended to create a bonding experience

with the men of my family, and soon became

a disastrous week of chickenpox,

goose fat and sangria.

But what I didn't realize

It's that you can't force that kind of thing.

You just need to let them happen on their own.

It turns out that the moments you don't plan for

are the ones that make the best memories.

When the results of the blood tests come out,

it turned out that I had a small infection

that healed after some antibiotics.

Glad to see you've got your appetite back.

A sign that you are better.

Yes. Maybe I can even go to school tomorrow.

The doctor said she would call tonight to clear it.

"Is it over there." That doesn't sound good.

I'm glad you're back in the kitchen.

Clisby, the only reason I cook delicious food

It's to keep that mouth of yours busy and shut.

It saw? This is what happens when you receive an education.

Grandma surprised everyone with perfect blood test,

proving that it is inexplicably as healthy as a horse.

My father, on the other hand,

found out he has high cholesterol.

Come on, Lil. Why don't you give me a little piece of that meat?

Bill, you ate two eggs this morning.

You are already over your limit for the day.

It's just until you lower your cholesterol.

This panela meat is delicious.

Maybe you can trade a bite

for an egg next week.

So is this how it will be?

It must be the doctor calling.

- Or what cholesterol? - Darling.

The doctor said you can't

- Al? - eat meat and cortei or bacon.

what?

what? What it was?

Dean okay?

It's about Bruce.

Thanks.

Bruce was wounded in Vietnam.

He's alive, but he had to be operated on.

Vo lev-lo ao hospital dos veterans amanh.

It's okay.

Everything will be fine.
