The Walking Dead (2010–…): Season 11, Episode 19 - Episode #11.19 - full transcript

What have you done?

Made a deal for us.

Previously on "The
Walking Dead"...

What does Pamela
get out of this?

Hornsby.

You go after the Miltons,
they'll crush you.

I don't have the words

to describe what this
place means to me.

The Commonwealth is built
on buying into bullshit.

It's a friggin' joke.

Bitch! Those people...

[indistinct shouting]

[Grunts]

[Screaming]

Help me!

Eugene: Wait! Wait up!

Judith: Sometimes I wonder
if it takes more courage

to live or die. Stop!

We've all done things
to still be here...

I have a very important mission.

I lied. I'm not a scientist.

People have died
trying to get you here.

Things we'd like to forget.

We became whoever
we needed to be.

I'm utterly, completely,
stone-cold Negan.

But who we are now, the
choices we make now,

maybe that's all that
matters.[People screaming]

[Indistinct shouting]

Max: Eugene.[Glass shatters]

Eugene!

Eugene: Max.

Man: Get off me! Max? Max?

Max? Max.

Max.

Sorry. I-I thought
you was... You!

You're the one you
killed him! Sebastian!

No, no, no, no, no, no, no!

We gotta get you out of
here. No! I lost Max!

I'm not gonna leave her!
We gotta go! Come on!

Go!

[Screaming continues]

We should...

Pamela: No.

No one touches him.

Not until I say so.

I wasn't blind to who he was.

In spite of what people
thought, I was trying to help.

Maybe I was just too late.

We had our issues, but...

Family's a complicated thing.

But you know that.

Your sister was loyal
to me for over a decade.

I want to think she
just lost her way.

That, perhaps, she
can be helped...

before it's too late.

I need an example.

Someone to remind these people
that actions have consequences.

If you find and
arrest Eugene Porter,

he could stand as
the example to all.

And we could help your sister.

Mercer: A citywide sweep and
capture is now in effect.

Let's go.

The targets are new immigrants
from the Virginia communities

of Riverbend, Hilltop,
and Alexandria.

Any known associates
of Eugene Porter

are to be brought
in for questioning

regarding the Founders Day riot

and the death of
Sebastian Milton.

[Laughter]

[Speaks indistinctly]

What do you think?
It'll happen?

I won't promise. [Chuckles]

Jerry: Whoa. Dude, come on.

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

[Herd growling]

What do you think?

Hunker down and make
camp, wait it out?

No. No, we'll
find a way around.

Off-roading with the wagon,
that seems kind of risky.

Besides, it's a nice day.
We're making good time.

Happy to treat you
all to my famous

fettuccine con cannellini
beans à la Jerry.

Just sayin'.

We should keep moving.

What's the rush?

We need to get these
supplies to Oceanside,

make sure they're okay,
then get off to Alexandria.

We just... don't
have time to spare.

Cool. Yeah.

Alright.

[Herd growling]

[Ticking loudly]

[Footsteps approaching]

[Door opens]

[Exhales slowly]

Rosita Espinosa.

929 Miller Street, Sector G4.

Currently unemployed.

Unmarried with one
daughter, Socorro Espinosa.

Do you verify the
information to be true?

You seriously doing this?

Do you verify the information?

So you don't know
me, I don't know you?

We're just... We're
strangers, huh?

Do you verify that this
information is true?

Sure.

Where were you during the riot?

Far east end of the square.

Who were you with? Myself.

You were with Eugene.

Several witnesses
saw you together.

We were. About a half-hour
before it happened.

What'd you talk
about? Your sister.

Be more specific.

Eugene said she
wasn't coming with us,

that she wanted to stay here,

change this place
for the better.

Have you seen him since? No.

You sure?

Totally.

That's fine.

Because at the end of the day,

it's obvious where
Eugene is going to be.

Yeah? Where's that? With you.

You're like family.

Well, I'll call
you if I see him.

Look, Rosita, I respect you,

even if in this moment
you don't respect me.

But I need you to do
something for me...

Tell Eugene to turn himself in.

He comes to me, shows remorse
and wants to cooperate,

it'll go a long way toward
helping everyone involved.

But if he or you and your people

make this harder
than it has to be,

no one goes anywhere,

and things only get
worse for all of you.

[Chuckles]

[Footsteps depart]

[Blade sharpening on stone]

[Door opens, closes]

[Knock on door]

Rosita: It's me.

How'd it go?

A lot of repeat questions
and intense staring.

You? Same.

You talk to the others? Yeah.

We're gonna leave at
dawn if we can get out.

Alright. Mercer's
gonna be watching.

I'm counting on it.

Hey. How you holding up?

Reckon better than I deserve.

I don't suppose you have any
news on Max's whereabouts?

I don't. I'm sorry.

It may seem trivial in light
of all the melee and mayhem,

but I'm the one who
should be truly sorry.

It's my actions
that put you both

in extremely
compromised situations.

No, don't be. That
prick had it coming.

Alright, what we need
to do now is figure out

how to get you out of here.

I know a way. The east gate.

I know when the shifts change.

Might be a window
we can slip out.

Alright, good. We can meet up with
the others on the road to Alexandria.

Eugene, what's up?

At the risk of
sounding ungrateful

for all your efforts
on my behalf,

I cannot leave
without my beloved.

I need to go find her.

You got every trooper in
the city looking for you.

You wouldn't make it a block.

Well, be that as
it may, I cannot...

I-I will not leave without her.

At the very least,
ascertain her safety.

Okay.

You stay here. I
will go look for Max.

If I can find her, maybe
we can get both of you out.

Is that a deal?

Deal.

Okay.

Be safe. Yeah.

Pamela: [On P.A.] Attention,
my fellow citizens.

The perpetrators of
these horrific events

cannot be allowed
to go unpunished.

Anyone providing information
on the whereabouts

of these individuals will
receive a generous reward,

while any persons found aiding
and abetting these fugitives

will share their fate...

That of swift and final justice.

[Grunting]

[Heavy breathing]

Maybe we leave the wagon behind?

No. We can do this. Come on.

One, two...

[All grunting]

Whoa, whoa! Whoa, whoa. Whoa.

[Groaning]Are you okay?

Can you walk? Are you okay?

Can you walk?

Yeah. Yeah.

Aaron: You alright? Yeah, yeah.

Shit.

[Groans] It's my knee.

Wait.

There might be a
place over there.

Looks like it has walls.
We gotta go on foot.

Here.

I'm gonna get more kindling.

Okay.

Check it out, bro!

It's big, it's got walls,

there's water nearby.

Tons of land for farming.

Kingdom 2.0, yo.

Uh, hello?

Sir Aaron?

Ah!

What?

Nothing.

It's gonna be dark soon.

I'll take first watch so
you can get some rest.

I'll stay up with you.

Yeah? Mm-hmm.

Alright. Alright.

You always complained that
I chose this place over you.

There never really was a choice.

I don't know if I
was ever capable

of giving you what you needed...

of controlling you.

And now...

after all this struggle...

after all our sacrifice...

what are we left with?

[Sobs]

At least we don't have to
disappoint each other anymore.

[Gasps]

[Growling softly]

Take care of that.

You shouldn't still be here.

But I am, 'cause I was ripped
out of my apartment by your guys

and questioned in that
stuffy room for three hours.

Smells like armpits and
ass in there. Yeah, sorry.

I can't be seen treating
you any differently.

Oh.

So it's nothing personal?

We got orders.

Milton's son is dead, and
she wants Eugene for it.

But he's not... Hey, I
don't have time to argue.

They're gonna kill him, right?

If they catch him, he's dead.

How can you be good with that?

I was by myself for
years, losing my mind,

scaring off anyone
that came my way.

But Eugene believed in me.

He accepted me for me.

No judgments.

He saved me.

Bad people don't do that.

Good people do.

He didn't know any of
this was gonna happen.

But it did.

You can't change that.

And I gotta look out
for my family now.

But not Eugene.

He'll get a trial. A fair one?

What is the point of this place

if a good man is put to death?

[Knocks]Sir, we've
got a sighting.

Maxxine Mercer. Sector G2.

Let's head out.

I gotta go.

Yeah.

Me too.

Sure you don't want
to get some rest?

You can do the later
shift with Elijah.

No. No, I'm fine.

Everything good with you two?

Something happen?

There was just...

There was a moment.

It brought back
memories of Henry.

I, uh...

I-I don't think I can again.

You know?

You know, I, uh...

used to be married once.

Really?

Well, not legally, but yeah.

I guess I don't really
talk about it much anymore.

Yeah, Eric and I...
We met in D.C.,

and there was just this
instant connection,

you know, and he asked
me out that night.

And I said no,

and I kept saying no
for the next six months.

Why?

I'm not sure.

I guess I thought I was too
busy or that I wasn't ready.

Maybe I was just afraid.

But eventually I said yes,

and our time together,
those years in Alexandria...

It was the happiest
moments of my life.

You know, after he died,

I thought,

you know, I'd give anything

to take back just
one of those nos

so that we could have
one more day together.

Lydia, loss is inevitable.

It always has been.

The only thing we can
control is when we say yes.

[Radio chatter]

Trooper: You, stop!

Turn around!

Over your head.

Subject has been apprehended.

Trooper #2: Copy that.

"I, Maxxine Mercer,
am responsible"...

These aren't my words.

They need to be.

[Sighs]

"I have suffered from bouts
of depression for years

and recently stopped
taking my medication.

In my confusion and paranoia,

I manipulated recordings to
slander the Milton family

and cause unrest.

My actions were
uncharacteristic and immoral.

I hope this community can find it
in their hearts"... Max! Just stop.

Sign it. And what?

Say Eugene was behind it all?

Take the pardon, Max.

I did this

because I couldn't stand being
a part of something so rotten.

Did you know that Eugene stopped
Sebastian from killing me?

You want me to just
hang him out to dry?

They're gonna execute
you from treason.

I'm trying to save you.

And I'm trying to
save this place.

"Speak truth, no
matter the cost."

Just like Dad used to say.

Even as a general, he never
forgot his responsibility

as a citizen.

I think he would've
liked Eugene.

I think he would have been proud
of what we tried to do here.

And I think he would
have been ashamed of you.

[Door opens]

You trying to get
yourself caught?

I was merely peeping at
trooper activity levels

so as to allow my assistance
in Rosita's search for Max.

Tired of standing on the
proverbial sidelines.

You'd be wise to
step aside, hoss.

No need for this to get ugly.

Very well.

Go ahead.

You're not trying to stop me.

You ain't going.

Because I'm a coward.

No.

It's because you're smart.

I'm a liability.
Always have been.

Relying on others to survive,

counting on their courage
due to a dearth of my own.

Hell, the only way I
bucked natural selection

was my penchant
for prevarication.

Means lying.

I figured.

Yeah, well,

I'm ashamed to say it's
my only discernible skill.

Do you think people
are born brave,

or do they become it?

Both.

So they have Eugene? Yeah.

Daryl and the others are
working to smuggle him out.

Okay. Okay. That's good.

Then he'll be out in the world,

he'll hide for a bit until
the Commonwealth gets bored.

We'll meet up with
him... You, me, Yumiko.

Like it was.

The four of us on
the road again.

Princess, you know
I'm not leaving.

Even after what they
wanna do to Eugene?

Crazy shit is happening, man.

All the more reason to stay.

He and Max started
something, showed the truth.

People want change.

What better time to fight for it

than when the powers that
be are frightened, huh?

Well, maybe I don't
feel like fighting.

Maybe this place looks all nice

and wants us to
think they're cool,

but really,
underneath, it sucks.

Maybe they're not
worth holding on to.

You think this
Mercer's a good man?

Yeah, but I've
known a lot of guys

who I thought were good men

don't always turn
out to be that way.

He and I haven't
exactly seen eye-to-eye.

But I'll say this...

Most folks are trying
to make the best

of what's in front of them.

Could be he's trying
to do the same.

Yeah, well, maybe this time,

I deserve more than just
the best of a bad situation.

Yeah, you do.

And whatever you
decide, I'm here...

if you need me.

[Door clanks open]

[Door clanks shut]

[Footsteps approach]

[Footsteps stop]

[Keys jingling, door unlocks]

Thank you for coming.

I hoped you would.

I have a lot to say.

What matters most
is that you're here,

which means you want to
talk about a way forward.

You killed my son.

Your people murdered
eight workers,

turning them to rotters, and
released them on the public.

Okay, yes. I needed
you to understand,

to... to... To get
your attention,

but I never intended
for him t...

Look, I took a gamble,

and, yes, it didn't
go the way I thought.

Sebastian and I may have
had our differences,

but in the end, I was
always there for him.

When he needed people for
his little side projects,

I helped because he
was your son, Pamela.

[Groans]

[Groans]

This is because of them.

From Hilltop, Alexandria.

It all started with them.
The... The dissent, the chaos.

Unless they're handled
by someone who knows

how to handle them,
they won't stop.

They will never stop until
they've taken everything!

Okay.

So, then, what do
we do with you?

Do we do it your way?

Take a risk?

Make a gamble?

[Coin clinking]

If you win,

you get to live.

But if you lose...

[Exhales sharply]

Thank you.

Thank you, Pamela.

Thank you.

I promise I'll do
better from now on.

No more games, no more secrets.

I am 100% at the Milton
family's disposal.

I know you are, Lance.

[Growling]

I-I don't... I don't understand.

[Growling]

Well...

[Growling]

Like you said,

you're at the family's disposal.

Thanks to you...

[Growling]

this is all that's left.

[Continues growling]

Body's still warm.

Feed my son, Lance.

[Door clanks shut]

Can we talk?

Uh... sure.

This is awkward.

I-I-I don't want you to leave.

I kinda have to.

'Cause of me? Yeah.

No.

Maybe.

Look, you're great.

Really. But...

But what?

I just...

I gotta get out of here.

Eugene's gonna die here.

I'm doing everything in my power

to make sure that
doesn't happen.

But not everything.

Right?

It's all such a shit show.

I know.

This place ain't perfect.

Neither am I.

But you've been out there.

You... You've seen
what's waiting.

It could be a lot worse.Don't...

Don't say that.
Well, am I wrong?

I need you to understand.

Nothing's been easy for me.

Even before all of this,

it wasn't easy.

Dad bailed when I was nine.

Mom remarried at
nine-and-a-half.

And dad number two brings
an evil stepbrother.

And they both...

start acting like
they're my dad, you know?

A lot of yelling,
a lot of shoving.

And my mom...

just, like, lets it happen.

Just to keep him around.

So I raise hell. I
mean, all the time.

Now new dad and new bro

start tying me up,

throwing me in a closet
when I "acted out."

Leave me there for hours.

I'd piss myself sometimes.

So they'd take turns...

beating me.

And all I'd hear was,

"Juanita, there's a
roof over your head.

Juanita, the bills are paid.

Juanita, it could be worse."

Well, you know what?

Fuck that thinking.

It could better too.

It should be.

Right?

This place...

is starting to look a
lot like my stepdad.

And if i just sit by and watch,

that makes me my mom.

And I am not my mom.

So...

I gotta go. Mm.

[Sniffling]

Okay.

Because... of what
happened to me...

when I see a man,

I see a monster.

I've been seeing them like that

long before they were dying

and coming back as
actual monsters.

But I know that's not you.

I just want you to know that.

[Door closes]

[Wind blowing]

[Metallic creaking in distance]

[Thud in distance]

[Creaking continues]

We triple-checked everything,

locked everything up.

Probably just the wind.

[Thudding and creaking continue]

[Clattering in distance]

That wasn't the wind.

Yeah.

Maybe we should
do another sweep.

Shit!

[Herd growling]

You good? Yeah.

We gotta get to
Eli and Jerry now!

Wake up! Trouble!

Go! Go now!

Go! Get inside!

[Growling continues]

There's gotta be at
least 50 of them!

How'd they get in the walls?

What the hell?!

Since when do the dead
use frickin' doorknobs?!

Whisperers.

Shit.

You two, get on the roof. Now!

How's the leg? Good enough.

I'll hold the door.

Be careful.

[Grunting]

[Groaning]

[Gasping]

Holy shit. Hey, it's
clear over here.

We could make a jump for it.

Maybe.

Yeah. No problem.

No, we can't risk it.

Alright, but if you
two can make the jump,

flank the walkers on this side.

I'll go back down.

We can work together,
separate the Whisperers

from the rest of the group.

Yeah? Alright.

Okay. Alright.

[Groaning]

[Growling]

Alright.

Dude.

Dude?

Dude? Dude!

[Growling][Grunting]

God... damn... Whisperers!

Oh!

[Growling]

How the hell did
a walker do that?

So, what do you think it was?

Like an aberration or something?

Well, there's
roamers and lurkers.

I mean, we've all seen some

that come back to the
places that they remember.

I've heard stories
about walkers like this

that can climb walls
and open doors.

I was never sure if
they were just stories.

Maybe there's other kinds too.

I hope not.

You sure you're okay to travel?

Thanks to you.

Come on, man.
That was my fault.

Today's a new day.

I'm gonna grab the
rest of the stuff.

Hey.

So, what was that you
were saying yesterday?

Something about a Kingdom 2.0?

[Laughs] You see
it now, right?

Ezekiel could be king again.

I don't know.

Feels more like this place
was built for... King Jerry.

And Queen Nabila?

[Laughs]

King Jerry and Queen Nabila.

I like the sound of that.

Me too.

Max?

[Sighs]

She's not coming.

You found her?

I did, but it was too late.

She's already in police
custody. I'm sorry, Eugene.

Shift's about to happen.

We should get going.

Then it's time I bid you adieu.

I'll check on the others.

Meet you back at your place.

My path leads elsewhere.

There's no other path, Eugene.

There is.

I understand.

You're upset. I get it.

But there's nothing
you can do for Max now.

Maybe not.

But what kind of man would
I be if I didn't try?

One that's alive. If you stay
here, they will kill you!

I know it's not logical,

but matters of the
heart rarely are.

I also know if I leave now,

there won't be any kind
of life worth living.

Being with Maxxine
has made me better,

better than I ever
thought I could be.

And as such, I just don't
see a path without her.

I go where she is, or I
just end up who I was.

Eugene.

When I was at my lowest...

feeling like the posterior
of some cosmic joke,

you told me that my
person was out there

and that I'd find her.

And though I didn't believe,

I trusted you
because I always do.

You were right.

Well, now I need
you to trust me.

Hey, it's gonna be okay.

It's not.

You have to let me go.

Id like for you to give
something to Coco for me.

[Sniffles, clears throat]

I do believe that one day

she'll have the style
to pull this off.

Maybe like after
age 15. [Chuckles]

[Indistinct conversations]

On the ground! Now!

My name is Eugene Porter,
and I'm here to confess.

I surreptitiously made a
recording of Sebastian Milton

and played it at the
Founders Day celebration.

Furthermore, I
confess to causing

the unintentional
death of Mr. Milton

in the melee that followed.

Anything else?

Yes.

I acted alone.

Maxxine Mercer may
have been present,

but had nothing to
do with any of it.

Take him.

[Birds chirping]

[Sighs]

[Door opens]

Is everyone ready?

[Door closes]

[Grunting]

Pamela: Your friends have been
removed from the Commonwealth.

Consider how your actions
might affect your brother.

They took the kids.
They took everyone.

Tomi: Give Pamela
what she wants.

Yumiko: That means
sacrificing Eugene.

Tell us where our friends
are or you're dead.

Hornsby: I'll show you.

Eugene: No matter how
bleak things look,

this is not the end.

[Exhales slowly]

Rosita Espinosa.
929 Miller Street.

Do you verify the
information to be true?

So you don't know
me, I don't know you?

We're just... We're
strangers, huh?

For Rosita, when
she's just dragged in

for questioning by Mercer

and he's acting like
she's any old suspect,

it's offensive to her,

because I think for
Rosita, she's like,

"I thought we had gotten
somewhere with each other."

And I think she also
knows that Mercer

is not necessarily
a bad guy at heart.

Look, Rosita, I respect you.

But I need you to do
something for me...

Tell Eugene to turn himself in.

Mercer is on an
interesting journey.

You never completely
know where he stands.

But if he or you and your people

make this harder
than it has to be,

no one goes anywhere,

and things only get
worse for all of you.

I think for Aaron, he
sees these young people

that clearly care
about each other,

have fun together, are
attracted to each other,

but he knows that Lydia

has been through so
much in her young life,

and he can see that
she is hesitating.

I'm gonna get more kindling.

Okay.

Lydia doesn't have that adult

that she feels
like she can go to

to ask, like, "What do I do
about this boy that I like?"

And I think he feels like he
can shed a little light for her.

You know, I, uh...

used to be married once.

Really?

Well, not legally, but yeah.

Aaron... similarly to Maggie,
he had kind of one true love.

And he hasn't
moved on from Eric.

You know, after he died,

I thought, you know,
I'd give anything

so that we could have
one more day together.

And I think in his own way,

he gets to remember this
person that he loved

and to share that with somebody.

Loss is inevitable.

It always has been.

The only thing we can
control is when we say yes.

You trying to get
yourself caught?

Tired of standing on the
proverbial sidelines.

You'd be wise to
step aside, hoss.

No need for this to get ugly.

Eugene was a liar,

and he went to the wrong
side of the equation

when he fell in with Negan.

But I think that Daryl can see

that Eugene has worked
really, really hard

to get to where he is.

Daryl himself had a brother
that he was ashamed of

and a family he was ashamed of

and did things himself

that I think Daryl right now
would be a little ashamed of.

Do you think people
are born brave,

or do they become it?

Both.

So what if Eugene used to
be a coward and a liar?

What matters the most
is who he is now.

But I think that Daryl knows

that most heroes
are made, not born,

and it's a matter of the
choices you make over time.

I understand.

You're upset. I get it.

But there's nothing
you can do for Max now.

Maybe not.

But what kind of man would
I be if I didn't try?

One that's alive. If you stay
here, they will kill you!

I know it's not logical,

but matters of the
heart rarely are.

This is absolutely
the most selfless

and brave thing Eugene has done.

He knows that what
he's walking into

is likely a situation that
there might not be any exit to,

other than a harsh
punishment for him.

On the ground! Now!

My name is Eugene Porter,
and I'm here to confess.

I surreptitiously made a
recording of Sebastian Milton

and played it at the
Founders Day celebration.

Furthermore, I
confess to causing

the unintentional
death of Mr. Milton

in the melee that followed.

He thinks that Max is a
better person than he is

and that she deserves to live,

even if he has to
go down for it.

Anything else?

I acted alone.

Maxxine Mercer may
have been present,

but had nothing to
do with any of it.

I think he does have
something to prove

about his own bravery.

Take him.

Princess, you know
I'm not leaving.

Even after what they
wanna do to Eugene?

We really liked the vibe

that Ezekiel and
Princess have together.

I think that there is something
about Ezekiel towards Princess

that is almost parental.

You think this
Mercer's a good man?

Yeah, but I've
known a lot of guys

who I thought were good men

don't always turn
out to be that way.

A lot of the themes around
some of these episodes

is, like, if you deserve better,
shouldn't you fight for that?

Maybe this time, I deserve more

than just the best
of a bad situation.

Yeah, you do.

- [Gasps]
- [Grunts]

Producing the scene, it
took a lot of planning.

This was a long night shoot.

[Blade slices][Grunting]

And we wanted it to be
terrifying, you know,

and we wanted even just
one walker climbing up

to feel really,
really scary for them.

[Herd growling]

I think it really
for our characters

is an unsettling idea,

because for so many years,

they're like, "Well, zombies
are always dangerous,

but we kind of know
how to handle them.

And when suddenly, that's
no longer the case,

it's disturbing to them,

because it means that all
their assumptions are wrong.

Anytime they're out there in
the wild now with a zombie,

they're gonna wonder,

"Is this zombie gonna
come climbing after me

if I hop a fence?"

There's so much that
they don't know,

and that does make things
more dangerous for them.

How the hell did
a walker do that?
