The Takeda army of 8,000

and headed for Unnokuchi Castle
in Saku-gun, Shinano.

with the Sanada in Chiisagata-gun,

north of Unnokuchi.

Kansuke, who was traveling across
the country in search of employment,

had met with Sanada Yukitaka.

Sanada, who was in danger
of the attack from Takeda...

and Kansuke who was burning
with hatred for the Takeda...

Kansuke went to Unnokuchi Castle
as Sanada's messenger.

UNNOKUCHI CASTLE

HIRAGA GENSHIN

So you're a guest of the Sanada's.

I heard Lord Sanada with the
Shigeno clan is a hard man to read.

What is he plotting, by sending
someone like you here?

He wants me to observe the battle
fare in Saku against the Takeda,

and to notify him on the situation
of the castle invasion.

Does he trust a ronin like you to that extent?

It could've been his way of getting
rid of someone troublesome like me.

Fine. I can use all the help I can get.

Stay close to me.

I hate to fight Takeda's huge army
with just a thousand men.

Do you have something to say?

No.

According to his letter, you are a strategist.

When you saw this castle, what did you think?

I thought it was a strong mountaintop castle.

I would imagine so.

Muto, take care of him.

I'm going to make my round around the castle.

But, it seems a bit too clean,
for right before the battle.

What? Too clean?

Yes.

You must smear dirt on the castle walls and gates.

Dirt?

Are you telling me to smear dirt on my castle?

To prevent it from burning from the fire arrows.

Two lords in Saku had rushed
to the aid of Unnokuchi Castle.

One of them was Hiraga's son-in-law,

the lord of Iwao Castle, Oi Yukiyori.

The other was Aiki Ichibei, from the
neighboring village of Unnokuchi.

Ready.

Set it ablaze!

Release!

Kansuke!

I'll implement your strategy.

Listen up! Smear dirt on the
castle walls, gates, and tower!

Work on it all night!

That was Kansuke's idea!
All Kansuke's idea!

Clear the way!

Lord!

Lord! The Takeda army is here!

So they've come.

TAKEDA HEADQUARTERS

We received a report that the Aiki
and Oi forces are in the castle.

It appears they number less than half of ours.

The Hara force will meet the
attacking force at the main gate.

The Yokota force will go to the rear gate.

The Obata force will go to the
second entrance gate,

and the Toda force will go to the third gate.

After we break through the castle
gates, we'll launch an all-out attack.

Then the lord can rush up Honjo immediately.

They'll be like trapped mice.

Yes.

A mountaintop castle like that should
fall easily in an all-out attack.

Capture the women and children,
and kill all the soldiers.

That should make the ji-samurai of Shinano tremble,

and compliantly give us their lands.

You're going to set an example with Unnokuchi,

to gain Minami-Saku as well?

That's right. Then we will advance further north

and crush the Oi clan in Iwamurata-
Komoro and invade Chiisagata.

If we can obtain Minami-Saku by New Year's,

we'll have more to look forward to next spring.

Harunobu's army was left on the back lines.

It's freezing!

Can we go back to Kai this year,
after we capture this castle?

I want to go home already.

This is the Young Lord's first battle.

We need him to distinguish himself
so that we can go home proud.

Itagaki.

Doesn't Father have a spy or
infiltrator in Unnokuchi?

Yes.

He thinks that he can take the
castle by force within three days.

I just hope it doesn't snow on us.

TAKEDA VASSAL,
HARA TORATANE (ONI MINO)

They're coming.

Attack!

Hit it!

Fire!

Forge ahead!

Go!

Men, attack!

The castle did not fall in three days.

Heizo... don't get drunk.

The enemy might attack us at night.

Even if that happens, I won't have an opportunity.

What the heck!? I am here to fight the Takeda!

I didn't come here to observe!

Don't say that.

Sir Yamamoto...

Princess.

Princess, I'm here for you.
Don't worry.

Please use the bathroom and go to bed.

Quiet!

Don't be rude!

Please excuse him.

Sir Yamamoto, can my father beat the
Takeda by staying in the castle?

Your father is waiting...

Waiting? Is he waiting for more aid to come?

He's waiting for it to snow.

Snow?

It's freezing.

In another half month or month...

If he can hold out until then and it snows...

The Takeda army will be forced to withdraw.

It's exactly as Kansuke says.

Father!

Don't worry. We have much more
provisions than the Takeda army.

We had a good harvest again this year.

That is the reason why the Takeda want Shinano.

Did your mother go to bed already?

Yes. She was chanting the sutras
during the entire battle.

I am a monk myself. I guess I'll have
to pray for the dead Takeda vassals.

Kansuke, will the Takeda vassals
find repose with my prayers?

If they can't take this castle easily,
they might cut off our water supply.

The Aiki force have been
preparing for that all night.

If the water in the well
should start running dry,

we should receive notice.

Will you gather pots and jars?

Pots? You want to fill them with water?

Exactly.

Aren't we able to stop their water supply yet?

Kyoraiishi Minbu have gathered the
Kanahori group to dig into the ground.

Their water supply should be cut very shortly.

When the ground freezes, there will be chaos.

We must hurry.

Hurry!

Hurry! Hurry up!

They haven't cut our water supply yet.

We are fully prepared for it.

Kansuke!

Kansuke....

Kansuke!

What is it?

I did as you instructed.

What is your master up to?

How would I know?
Besides, he isn't my master.

Sir Aiki, the enemy is underneath.

What?

They've dug a hole and are close-by.

They're in that direction.

Let us dig a hole in that direction, too.

We'll confront them in their hole.

Master!

What is it?

Did you hit their water line?

I don't know, but...

Alright! Dig!

Fire!

Retreat! Retreat!

I am terribly sorry!

Who is it?

Who is in that castle?

Kansuke! How did you learn
to strategize like that?

I learned it from observing
battles across the country.

You are truly incredible.

Won't you serve me in the Aiki clan?

First, we must defeat the Takeda.

The Takeda will come out even stronger, in anger.

Young Lord, there appears to be
an excellent strategist in that castle.

A strategist, huh?

Snow...

Itagaki.

Do we have saké?

What? Saké?

Don't let that saké go to waste.

The battle continued into late
December, but the castle did not fall.

In two days, we'll run out of provisions...

and hay for the horses.

If the snow should pile now,
the horses won't be able to move.

Lord, we should wait until
next spring to bring them down.

I doubt the enemy will pursue us in this snow.

Let's retreat.

Father!

Father...

Please let me bring up the rear.

Young Lord.

What?

I will bring up the rear.

This is the Young Lord's first battle.

It slipped my mind.

You're a disgrace!

Didn't you hear what the vassals said?

The enemy won't be pursuing us.

Do you want the honor that badly?

Please!

How far must you disgrace me?

Men, listen up!

Harunobu is going to bring up the rear for us!

He will act as the rear guard!

Young Lord...

The enemy is moving!

The enemy is retreating!

Father!

We won!

Lord!

Congratulations!

Son-in-law, good job!

Sir Aiki, thank you for your help!

Let us raise our shout of victory!

Lord! Let us send pursuers out!

Please give the order for it!

Kansuke, that won't be necessary.

Lord!

The horses can't run in this snow,
and the soldiers are tired.

If you don't pursue them now, they
will come attacking again in spring.

In any event, there won't be
any end to the battles.

I'd rather raise a shout of victory and
let my vassals celebrate over saké!

Make the preparations for it!

Please wait!

Kansuke!

What is it?

If the enemy runs away, we won't
be able to get Nobutora.

On December 26th, Nobutora retreated to Kofu.

Reporting. The lord has retreated safely.

All right. We should be clearing out, too.

Men, we are clearing out!

What did we come here for anyway?

It's the Young Lord's first battle.

It's too late to accomplish anything.

Within that same day, the aid from
Oi left Unnokuchi Castle.

Lord Hiraga!

Lord Hiraga...

Kansuke, have some saké, too!

Why did you allow Sir Oi to leave?

What?

It's dangerous to leave the castle open now!

Don't worry. The enemy won't come back in this snow.

You shouldn't let your guard down!

If I were the enemy, I would see
this as an opportunity!

Hiraga!

We will be leaving now.

Are you leaving tonight?

With the New Year's approaching,
the vassals and farmers

want to go home as soon as possible.

I can imagine.

That's the situation, Kansuke.

Please wait! The Takeda force may come back!

Are you still saying that?

That won't happen.

I sent a scout out, and the Takeda
army is over 24 miles away.

The Young Lord of Takeda is
acting as the rear guard.

The Young Lord?

This was the Young Lord's first battle.

I heard the Young Lord is quite a fool.

To order him to be the rear guard...

The enemy were certain that we
wouldn't send pursuers after them.

Which means, this battle is over.

The Young Lord is bringing up the rear?

Is something wrong?

Men, listen up!

We're going to build a fire here
and rest our bodies for a while.

We'll kill the horses and
use them for provisions.

You can have saké, too!

But... you must not get wobbly drunk!

Just drink enough to warm your bodies up!

I thought you left.

I decided to stay.

It's not that I believe you.

I sent my men home.

Would you like a drink, too?

I once met the Young Lord of Kai.

That Young Lord isn't a fool.

Do you still think they will come?

If he doesn't come, I'll be
convinced that he is a fool, too.

I don't care if he is a fool,
I like the Young Lord.

Listen, everyone.

We are heading back to Unnokuchi.

We will put out the torches,
return to the castle and attack it!

All of you, be prepared!

The snow has stopped falling.

Princess!

Kansuke, thanks to you.

I do not deserve thanks.

Thank you.

Did you lose your eye in battle?

No.

Was it from illness?

I lost it from a deep grudge.

Stop joking around.

Kill anyone who resists!

For those who surrender capture them alive!

Lord!

He's probably not here.

Nobutora?

I doubt he is here.

Damn!

Oh! What have I done?

Never mind. Let's go!

Hey, Takichi!

Are you all right?

Takichi!

They got me!

It's minor! Get moving!

Hurry up!

The castle was thus conquered
by the force led by Harunobu.

Mother!

Mother...!

Mother!

Mother...

Mother...

You needn't die!

You must escape.

You must live.

Takeda Harunobu wasn't a fool.

The castle that Nobutora couldn't
capture with his army of 8,000...

Harunobu had managed to capture
with his small force of 300.

Young Lord! We've taken the head
of Lord Hiraga Genshin!

Search the castle thoroughly!

Search the castle!

Search that side!

Itagaki!

We're clearing out, once we
shout out our victory!

What?

We're withdrawing our men.

Please wait. If we withdraw our
force, the lord will be unhappy.

We should stay in the castle,
send a messenger over,

and wait for the lord's order.

I didn't capture this castle to please my father.

Then, why?

Why did you do it then?!

It'll protect you from all dangers.

Brother...

There is no such thing as fate.

Is he demanding a hostage?

Princess Yu will surely
give out a beautiful tone.

Go to hell on your own.

I've taken the head of the fake
strategist, Yamamoto Kansuke!
