Amari, is the upcoming
battle that precarious?

No. We won't know until
we actually fight them.

We may not lose to them
in number, but...

Up until now, the lord has based
his decision to go to war...

on his odds of winning.

This is the first time
he's engaging in a big battle.

without having the odds
in our favor.

So he's engaging in a battle
without any strategizing.

Lady Okita, please rest assured.

I, Amari, will turn it into
a victorious battle for our clan.

Amari...

Yes.

Be sure to return to Kai alive.

Thank you.

I, Amari, will remain with Kai,
no matter what.

Preceding the battle, Harunobu
complied with Itagaki's request,

and made a dedication
to the Suwa Shrine.

Will this do?

I am very grateful for it.

This indicates your victory in battle!

EARLY SPRING, 1548

In early spring of 1548...

In order to crush Murakami Yoshikiyo,
the Takeda army headed for their base

in Sakaki, Hanishina-gun, Shinshu.

The Murakami army was quick
to respond to this challenge.

In order to confront the Takeda,
they left Sakaki immediately

and headed for Chiisagata.

Thus, the two armies set up
camp at Uedahara,

where the battle would take place.

The Takeda army numbered 10,000.
The Murakami army numbered 8,000.

TAKEDA ARMY

What is going on
in the Murakami camp?

It appears that they knew
about our attack.

Lord, please take a look here.

We are camped at the foot of Mt. Monomi.

Murakami is at Mt. Tenpaku-zan.

He knows that area like his backyard.

But we can't withdraw at this point.

If we do, then it'll be
seen as our defeat.

If I may humbly speak up...

Lord, please assign me as
the van for this battle.

No. I would like to be the van.

Sanada, you have a grudge
against Murakami.

Moreover, the Murakami side
sees you as a traitor.

If you are the van,
it'll inspire the enemy.

I want you to defend the main camp.

Baba will be the rear guard.

Itagaki and Amari will
act as the vanguards.

Split up and level down the enemy.

Keep your eye on Sir Amari.

Very well.

Kansuke, stay back at the main
camp and protect the lord.

In the worst case scenario...

You must persuade him to retreat,
as the military strategist.

I pray for your success.

Remember Shiga Castle!

If we lose to the Takeda,
we will all lose our heads,

and our corpses will be left
to rot on the fields!

The women and children who
are left behind will be sold off!

They will show no mercy
even to the farmers!

The men will be sent to work
in the gold mines,

and the women will be sold
to the brothels!

The Takeda are trying to
rape our province!

We can not forgive them!

Justice is with us!

On February 14, the battle
broke out at Uedahara,

with Itagaki and Amari
as the vanguards.

Itagaki...

Heizo!

Master!

You've gotten strong!

I'll distinguish myself
in this battle!

I'll bring honor to the Yazaki name!

Don't be hasty! If you die,
Hisa will grieve terribly.

Yes!

What do you mean by "yes"?

Retreat!

Attack!

Push harder! Corner them!

Shall we attack, too?

No. Don't chase too deeply.

We have an urgent messenger!

Reporting! The Itagaki forces are
breaking through the enemy's forces...

and are closing in on their main camp.

Itagaki is rushing the victory,
to give me confidence.

OSAKA KANNON-IN, SUWA

Did the lord write this?

Sir Itagaki made him write it.

Why?

To get the protection of the
deity of Suwa.

Itagaki is a truly good
deputy for Suwa.

The lord must win this battle.

For both you and
Young Lord Shiro's sakes.

ITAGAKI'S ARMY

Denbei!

Denbei!

Yes Sir! Did you call me?

Bring "that".

Denbei, to prepare for the worst...
I want you to wear that.

Sir Itagaki... are you going to
use him as the lord's double?

You even had that arranged?

It's to draw the enemy to our force,
even for a couple of hours.

What about you, Sir Itagaki?

Listen. The battle can't go
beyond the van armies.

We must settle it!

We must stop the enemy from
closing in on the main camp!

Then we won't lose many allies.

And the main camp can carefully
plan out the rest of the battle.

Kansuke will take care of the rest.

Denbei, are you scared?

I won't be returning to Kai alive.

Why should you die?

This is an honor as a warrior.

Denbei, please entrust
your life with me.

I have no family to grieve
over my death.

I shall gladly offer my life to you.

This was mine...

Denbei, you are a fine samurai.

AMARI'S ARMY

I am switching over to the
enemy's side now.

What did you just say?

I am going to secretly
communicate with the enemy.

Don't panic.
It's not for real.

I am going to Murakami's
main camp from now.

I'm going to go there and
take Murakami's head.

If their Commanding Chief is
killed in his camp, then...

the enemy will panic and be
forced to retreat.

That is what the strategy is.

What will become of you?

I probably won't make it out alive.

After you see the enemy retreating,
relay this to the lord.

Why must you hide it until then?

The lord wouldn't believe it
if he were to hear it now.

Notify him of it after it's done.

I want you to be my witness for this.

Sir Amari, please don't do it.

Then this battle will end...
with our victory.

And we won't have to lose
most of our soldiers.

I shall turn this into a
winning battle, no matter what!

This was the only strategy
I could think of.

What will happen, if you fail?

If I should fail...

Lead my forces to assist Itagaki.

Protect Itagaki.

Is that clear?

This should do it.

Let's wait until
Harunobu makes a move.

Reporting! Takeda vassal,
Amari Bizen-no-kami, is here.

Let him through.

Amari, it's good to see you!
What took you so long?

I waited for night, to come
in the cover of darkness.

Please forgive me.

Tomorrow morning, please pass
through my camp.

We are your ally.

We shall guide you to
the Takeda main camp.

Amari, if you are going to switch
over, you should've just brought...

Harunobu's head over here.

Kojima, Amari wants to unify the
samurai in Kai after the Takeda fall.

This is why he's helping us
defeat Harunobu.

Thank you for understanding.

Amari switched over
to the enemy's side?

Sir Aiki, is that true?

There's no doubt about it. My men
have been secretly watching him.

To think that Amari would...

That's unthinkable!

Nothing is unthinkable.

Damn you, Amari!

Obu!

Send an urgent messenger
to Komai at Uehara Castle!

Have him arrest Amari's
family in Kofu!

Send troops against Amari's
forces and kill them all!

Lord, please wait!

This might be a strategy of Sir Amari's.

Strategy?

Yes.

Listen carefully.

The outcome of a battle isn't set
by who you will or will not betray.

It's what you will protect
or what you can lose from it.

Murakami's head signifies the
lives of thousands in Kai...

What do you mean by strategy?

Amari plans to enter the enemy camp
alone to take Murakami's head.

Reporting! The Yashiro and
Mochizuki forces are in place!

Good work!

Launch a night attack on
Itagaki's camp.

But at a good time,
withdraw immediately.

That might trigger a move
from the main camp.

If Harunobu bites, then it'll
be to our advantage.

At that time, we'll launch
a full-scale attack!

Damn you!

Wait!

Amari, so you tricked me!

Did you come after my head,
out of a desperate strategy?

Is the Takeda in such
a sad plight?

Are you staking your life to
save them from that plight?

They are not in a plight.

I alone am all it takes
to take your head!

That's a fine resolve,
a shame to kill.

Lord!

I dislike strategies like that.

After I kill Takeda Harunobu,
I'll have you serve me.

Kill me!

Keep an eye on him so that
he doesn't kill himself!

Kill me!

Who shot the arrow?

I did.

Heizo!

He's Yazaki Jugoro's vassal, who
made the connection with Amari.

Heizo? I see.

You saw through him and
shot the arrow?

I was aiming for his neck,
but I missed.

That was excellent!
Heizo, good work!

Yes!

What? Amari is in the enemy camp?

Yes!

What is going on?

I don't know. The Murakami
main camp is confused, too.

Did he switch over
to the enemy's side?

That's impossible!

Sir Amari...

The enemy is attacking!

Damn you, Murakami!

Just as you would expect from
Murakami, who knows this area well...

Denbei, let's go.

Yes!

Urgent messenger!

Reporting! A night raid was
launched on Sir Itagaki's camp!

How is Itagaki?

He pushed the enemy back and is safe.

So the enemy retreated?

No. They are just held back.

Why? Did Amari fail?

Or did he really switch over?

Why are they both rushing into things?

It's probably to end the battle quickly.

For that purpose, Amari became
your spear, and Itagaki your shield.

Lord! Please entrust the
Suwa forces with me!

I shall save Sir Itagaki!

That won't be necessary.

I will go.

No! You must not break down
the main camp!

Are you telling me
to let Itagaki die?

I will go and provide aid.

No! I'm launching a full-scale
attack! Blow the horn!

Yes!

What? Takeda Harunobu
is making his move?

Yes. The generals are
gathering around him now.

Good work!

Let us attack, too!

Lord! Amari has escaped!

What?

Don't panic! Prepare for
a full-scale attack!

Blow the horn!

Fire!

Retreat! Sir Itagaki, retreat!

It's the enemy!

Retreat!

Sir Amari...

Itagaki, retreat...

I understand.

I'm not good at strategizing
after all... Forgive me.

Sir Amari...

Sir Itagaki! A full-scale attack!

The lord is personally leading it!

Sir Amari... I shall be seeing you soon.

What is that?

There's Takeda Harunobu!

Is that me?

Lower the flag!

There's Itagaki! Kill him!

Protect the lord!

Go!

Forge ahead!

Follow me!

Itagaki!

Lord! Please retreat!

Out of my way!
We must save Itagaki!

No! Do you plan to waste his death?

Sir Itagaki!

Master!

What?

He's a double for Takeda Harunobu?

"Untiring, the sunset glows...

"The moonlight shines...

"and the flower blooms."

Young Lord...

Itagaki!

Lord! Please retreat!
