The Rebel (1959–1961): Season 2, Episode 11 - Explosion - full transcript

Yuma witnesses as Roy Shandell murders his partner to keep the money from a stage robbery. Yuma nabs Shandell and delivers him to the Socorro jail but Shandell's father uses nitroglycerin to force the son's release.

Whammo!

Hey, Walt, did you ever see a dead man

fall off a stagecoach and bounce like that?

Do you have to talk about it?

Whoo, and that other one, went karump,

and rolled 20 feet.

You didn't say there'd be any shooting, Roy.

Ooh, I make things up as I go along.

Anyway, quit worrying.

Pleasure yourself counting all that brand new money.

You give me my cut now and I'm headin' south fast.

You'll travel rich.

5,000 a piece is what I figure, Roy.

5,000?

Here's 1,000, 2,000,

3,000, 4,000, 5,000.

You wanna count it again?

I sure had you pegged wrong.

I have to admit, I've been wondering about you, Roy.

Were you?

I thought you'd try and hold out on me,

keep the hog's share.

Hey, Walt.

Hey, maybe I did hold out on you.

Maybe there's something extra in here you got coming to you.

I'm happy, Roy.

That's nice.

I like to see a man die happy.

Well, you were a good judge of character, boy.

You make one wrong move and you're gonna missing a button

from the front of your shirt.

My legs is bogged in solid rock, mister.

I'll stay put.

And we knew the payroll man was riding

that stage to Socorro,

so me and ol' Walt kinda rode by like, to take a look at.

And while you were looking, you killed two men.

I do wish that driver and guard hadn't drawed down on us,

but, oh, I'm death afraid of shotguns.

He didn't draw down on you.

Well, I'm pure sorry 'bout ol' Walt,

but he got loosey tongue when he drank,

and nervous as he was, he was sure to set

the double doors a'swingin' and brag about what we'd done.

Mount up we're going to Socorro.

Walt, you tell ol' Satan to keep the fires going.

Tell him Roy Shandell's gonna be on his way any day now.

Mount up, he's not listening.

You know, I don't know what come over me

to shoot a friend in the back.

I hope he can hear my neck snap when they hang me up to dry.

It'd pleasure ol' Walt and, well, I got it coming.

All righty then,

you wanna stick your nose in people's business.

You're gonna die now!

Get out the fife and drum corps.

Roy Shandell's come home!

How 'bout that?

Hello there, Bill, Frank.

Hey, Dave, I told you 'bout that drinking.

Oh, welcome back to Socorro, Roy.

Oh, we knew you would make a name for yourself.

Oh folks it's great to have you

out of here to welcome home the hero.

Roy!

Yes sir, just to look around

and see all these friendly faces, ha!

Pipe down there.

Mister, what'd he do this time?

I'll tell the sheriff when I see him.

But I got a right to know what trouble he's in.

That is my old man.

Go ahead, tell him what I done.

Then watch him start blubbing all over the street.

I'm past crying, Roy.

Man gets cried out.

I'm sorry he's your son, mister.

He just killed three men.

Pa, you got yourself a right nap

right on top of the barrel.

Now you can't hide it, so you better just try to

polish it up so it'll look real nice

when they hang it

back on the tree.

You're the lowest thing I ever looked at.

Pa look, somebody's hurt.

That's nothing for a boy to look at Davey,

you go on home.

Barney please, before you believe a word, hear Roy's side.

Roy's side is always the worst, you know that Joe.

All right now what's this all about?

Couple miles out the dead one out there

was dry gulched by this loudmouth.

Oh don't leave nothing out, reb.

If you're gonna sandbag me, you do a good job.

A couple of other killings I didn't see.

But he'll tell you everything.

He likes to talk about it.

Barney, you know Roy ain't the killing kind.

He never done a thing like this before.

Who are you?

Where do you fit in?

My name's Yuma, Johnny Yuma.

Some things I can't walk away from.

There's $10,000 in there touched off three killings.

That's why the stage came in empty.

Well Roy, looks like your clock's just about run down.

All right, you know the way.

Frank you take care of the bodies.

Mind if I leave now?

I'd like to be on my way to Redington.

Sorry Yuma, need you at the trial.

You're our only witness.

Why, I've already given you my deposition.

I want you to testify before a judge and jury.

You really want to hang my boy, don't you Barney?

I'm sorry Joe that it had to be him,

but this territory's trying for statehood.

We gotta earn the right.

Hm, over my dead body is that it?

We've gotta prove that we enforce law and order.

You just chisel that on my tombstone, Cagle.

We got our statehood courtesy of Roy Shandell.

How about that Pa?

I'll do what I can for you Roy, that's a promise.

Oh you just do that, Pa.

You go back out to your diggings

and bury your face in the dirt.

Looking for gold, just like you've always done.

Only this time when you look up,

look up high enough to see me hanging.

Mr. Yuma?

Yeah Davey.

What are you writing about?

Oh about the things that happen to me every day.

I keep a journal.

You got Roy Shandell in there?

Sure do, two pages full.

Did you know he rode a horse to death on purpose

when he was only 14?

I can believe it.

He beat up a lady teacher once, too.

Then when he got put out of school

he tried to burn down the building.

He's a mean one, Mr. Yuma.

I know I tangled with him.

Whenever there was trouble in Socorro,

Pa went looking for Roy Shandell first.

Pa always said he'd end up on a rope.

Yeah, well it's a little late coming,

but it's coming.

Is a hanging rope like this one?

No Davey, this is a working rope.

The knot's different.

How different?

Forget it, Davey.

Not something for a boy to think about.

Working rope's all you'll ever need.

Davey.

Skedaddle now, boy.

Play somewheres else.

Do as he says, Davey.

- Cagle inside?
- Yeah.

Let's go in.

Come to make a deal with you, Barney.

You can't buy my way outta here, Pa.

You ain't grubbed enough gold yet.

It's about Roy, Joe.

No deals.

Turn Roy loose, Barney.

Give him an hour's start out of town

and nobody will get hurt.

I said no deals, Joe,

and don't threaten me.

Don't make me do it, Barney.

I'll have to use this nitroglycerin.

I'd hate to blow this place up, Barney,

but I'll do it if you don't turn Roy loose.

Hey don't that beat the dog?

The old man's finally gone

and got some gravel in his gizzard!

Where's the key to the cell door Barney?

Don't do it, Cagle.

It might be plain water.

You're bluffing, Joe.

Am I?

Ain't you ever seen nitroglycerin before?

Not up close.

I have in the army.

Sometimes you can treat it rough and nothing happens.

But I've seen it blow sky high

just by looking crooked at it.

That's right, Mr. Yuma.

Even tilting the bottle the wrong way

can turn it loose sometimes.

How'd you dare walk here with it?

Had it in my mining shack on the edge of town.

Took me a half hour to walk it.

Unlock the door, Barney.

I didn't know there was any of that stuff around here.

Use it for mining.

Came from Denver in a jumbo rig.

That's the only thing that carries this stuff safe,

but I ain't trying to keep it safe anymore.

Oh oh!

Hey you got yourself a pat hand now, Pa.

Could be water or what you say it is.

But maybe you're lying.

Oh yeah!

Give me that bottle.

All right stop all this lollygagging.

Get the key and turn me loose, or drop the bottle

but get it over with!

Joe, Roy doesn't care what happens to you.

Why get yourself in a sweat over him?

You want him alive or you wouldn't be here.

Now give me that bottle.

You won't drop the bottle.

I'd rather blow him up than see him hanged,

and if you think I'm fooling...

Pa why did Mr. Shandell send me away?

Davey, Davey get out, Davey please get out.

A man will do most anything

to keep his boy from getting hurt, won't he Barney?

There's a difference in boys, Joe.

I got one I'm proud of.

Hey Cagle, Cagle, take a look at what your kid

could turn into without a father!

A real curly wop!

How about that Cagle?

What'll it be Barney?

There's the key.

But I won't open the door for him.

I'll do it.

When I was a kid at home, one of my jobs

was to put out the garbage.

Oh funny.

Hold it right there, reb.

Back off.

Barney, Davey says there's

something going on in there.

You in trouble?

Over there, over there!

Don't press your luck, Roy.

No trouble, Frank.

Just stay out of here and do exactly what I tell you.

I want my pinto, and you know what else.

Frank, get Roy Shandell's pinto.

Load it with food and supplies and have it ready outside.

Who's gonna ride it Barney?

Roy Shandell's riding out of here.

Don't anybody try to stop him, understand?

Barney, Roy's wanted for murder.

You gone clean out of your mind?

Just do what I tell you, Frank,

and keep the streets clear.

I'll explain later.

We better do as he says, pass the word.

You'd better go home, Davey.

You've done real well.

No more guns, Roy.

Now Pa I just may need me a gun for shooting game.

I just may have to shoot me some fresh meat.

I'll give you a target you're best at.

Try my back.

I'll just do that.

You've got three murders on your soul already, boy.

You shoot and I'll drop this bottle.
