The Outer Limits (1963–1965): Season 2, Episode 3 - Behold Eck! - full transcript

A two-dimensional alien inadvertently causes havoc in Los Angeles. The alien is stranded in our three-dimensional world and only a mild-mannered optician and his secretary have to power to help.

Since the first living thing.

Gazed upward
through the darkness,

man has seldom been content
merely to be born,

to endure, and to die.

With a curious fervor,

he has struggled to unlock
the mysteries of creation.

And of the world
in which he lives.

Sometimes he has won,
sometimes he has lost,

and sometimes,

in the tumbling torrents
of space and time,

he has brief glimpses
of a world.

He never even dreams.

Now, you say you found it like this
when you came in this morning?

Yes.

All right, Miss,
thank you very much.

We'll be in touch
with you. Sergeant?

Oh, Dr. Stone?

Hmm?

Dr. Stone.

Yes, yes.

I'm, uh, detective
Lt. Runyan,

and this
is Sgt. Jackson.

Mmm-hmm.

We can't figure it out,
doctor.

This is the 5th optical lab
that's been destroyed.

Now, uh, what kind of a
weirdo would do such a thing?

Probably someone who just
doesn't like spectacles.

Hmm.

It's very interesting.

Very interesting.

Is, uh,
he always like that?

Well, he's a very
brilliant man.

In what way?

Well, for one thing,
he's one of the world's

foremost authorities
in optical geometry.

And if you'd ever
read his articles

on the laws of rectilinear
propagation, you'd know this.

Thanks a lot, Miss,
some other time.

Well, how am I going
to see without these?

I don't suppose we
have another pair.

Oh, unless you want
to try prescription 109.

It's very close
to your own.

109?

The special lenses you designed for
correcting aberrational astigmatism.

They seem to work quite well
as ordinary reading glasses.

Oh, yes,
yes, I remember.

We made several of these,
didn't we?

Yes, 4 pair.

The other 3 were distributed to
patients suffering from double vision.

It was on
an experimental basis and...

Did, uh, did they work?

The written reports have been
on your desk for 2 weeks.

Now, Wilkenson was the one
with the little beard.

They're all here. If you want
to talk to them personally,

I can call them and have
them make appointments

to see you
later in the week.

Uh, no, thank you.
Thank you, Miss Dunn.

Yes, doctor.

There is nothing
wrong with your television set.

Do not attempt
to adjust the picture.

We are controlling
transmission.

We will control
the horizontal.

We will control the vertical.

We can change the focus
to a soft blur,

or sharpen it
to crystal clarity.

For the next hour, sit quietly.

And we will control
all that you see and hear.

You are about to participate
in a great adventure.

You are about to experience
the awe and mystery.

Which reaches
from the inner mind to...

The outer limits.

Dr. Stone,
are you all right?

Yeah, did... did you
see anything?

See anything? Oh.

Here, I'll do that. Thank you.
I heard you scream.

Oh, you looked
so awful,

I thought
maybe you were hurt.

It's nothing, really. I must
have stumbled over something.

Where are those glasses?

Do we have any more
of the meteoric quartz

from which
these were made?

Yes, sir.

Just enough
to make another pair.

I'll try to get a pair
from one of the patients.

Meantime, have delta optics
make them up immediately.

I want them made
to this exact prescription.

Do you understand,
Miss Dunn?

Yes, sir.

Now, Miss Dunn.

Yes, sir.

Oh, incidentally,
if you want me,

I'll be at
my brother's office.

Dr. Stone, I don't mean
to be difficult,

but his secretary
called last week,

and she said he absolutely
will not see you

without an appointment.

That's all nonsense. You just
call and say I'm coming over.

Good morning, Dr. Stone.
Miss Willet.

Please, doctor,
he's in a conference.

Now look,
Miss Willet, I...

Why, Miss Willet,

did anyone ever tell you, without
glasses, you're beautiful.

I simply can't
let you in there.

The entire committee on atomic
space propulsion is here.

Admiral Leighton, the chairman
himself, is in that room.

Oh, sir, I'm dreadfully sorry.
I...

It's quite all right,
Miss Willet.

I'm afraid we must
accustom ourselves

to these interruptions
from my brother.

James, it may interest you to
know that you are disrupting

a highly important conference I'm
having with the atomic committee

and admiral Leighton.

Oh, Leighton, yes, I... I... shh.

Well, I... I remember him.

He's the one that always refers to
me as the, uh, the optical illusion.

And he's also the one who offered
you a top Echelon position

on the project,
which you promptly rejected.

So I did, didn't I?

That, uh, isn't exactly what I
came down to talk to you about.

Look, James, I am aware
that your specific problem

is much more important
than anybody else's.

But just this once,
couldn't it wait?

Now, Bernie, be nice.
This will only take a moment.

I just want
a little information.

Now, just sit down
and make yourself comfortable.

All right, dimension.

Now, that's what it boils
down to, dimension.

We all know
there are things that exist.

Uh, material things
that we can't see

without the aid of unique
lights or special lenses.

Just as there are certain sound
frequencies that we can't hear.

Will you get
to the point, please?

Can a 2-dimensional object

exist in our frame of reference,
and if it did, would it, uh...

Would it have material,
would it have mass?

Miss Willet.

Will you please step in there
and inform admiral Leighton

that I will be detained
for a moment?

Yes, sir.

Oh, and obviously, I don't
want him to know why.

Bernie, stop acting so
pompous and answer my question.

You yourself know that the
question is absolutely senseless.

How could anything
exist in 2-dimension?

Why couldn't it?

Because, as you
may have guessed,

this is a 3-dimensional world.

Oh.

What if it was from,
uh, another world?

Uh, hypothetically.

Well, hypothetically,
anything is possible.

All right. Let's pursue
the hypothesis.

Supposing there was this,
uh, this thing.

It had height, width,

contour,

but no depth.

No other dimension, unless you'd
like to admit its presence

and its existence
in time,

in which case, it would have
dimensions 1, 2, and 4,

but no 3rd.

Alive?

Oh, yes. Yes, indeed.
To the extent that it moves

and acts upon
its environment.

Impossible.

Why, that would defy every
known scientific principle.

Well, then you just better find
yourself some other principles,

because I think
I just saw one.

In the public street,
I presume?

No, no, no...
No, it was in my lab.

I had on a pair of special
glasses and there he was.

You know, I've been thinking
about it all the way down here.

It's absolutely fascinating.

Do you realize, if you look at a
2- dimensional thing straight on,

you can see it
as plainly as I see you.

But when it turns sideways,

you can't see it at all.

How do you know
it was 2-dimensional?

Because when he, uh...

When he turned sideways to me,
he disappeared.

Now you see it,
now you don't.

You know, if a thing like this
wanted to go through a wall,

it wouldn't have any problem at
all, as long as it turned sideways.

But when you turn it sideways, and
it becomes an up and down line,

it still can't go
through the wall.

Miss Willet.

Oh, I'm sorry.

No, no, no, never mind,
Miss Willet.

You see, when I turn this,
it becomes a line

because it has
this dimension.

But this thing that
I'm talking about

does not have
that particular dimension,

ergo...

Nothing.

As a matter of fact,
I think that's how it got out.

Of course, there... there
is one thing that concerns me.

What would happen
if it tried to go

through a wall
straight on?

Think that over,
big brother.

Miss Willet.

Miss Willet, I think
my brother is really ill.

Oh!

George.

George Wilkenson.

Mmm?

George?

My name is Dr. James Stone,
do you remember me?

Oh, yeah.

I stopped by your house to pick
up some glasses we made for you

and they told me
you'd had an accident.

I... I know that this is no time
to bother you with trivialities,

but I wonder if I might have those
spectacles back. You see, I...

The police didn't tell you
what happened?

The glasses are gone.

What?

An instant
before the accident,

something tore
them off my face.

Something, George?
What kind of something?

You wouldn't believe me.

Nobody believes me.

They think I'm crazy.

Well, I'm not. You hear me?
I'm not!

I tell you,
I saw a creature!

Something
so frightening that...

George, the day you came to my
office to pick up the glasses,

there were
2 other people there.

Do you remember their names?

Think real hard, George,
this is vitally important.

Do you remember
who they were?

I don't know the man,

but I talked to the girl.

Her name was, uh...

Rita Morgan, I think.

George, please help me.

Do you have any idea
where she lives?

Come on, George,
think real hard.

This is terribly important.

Please.

I... I don't remember,
exactly.

Try real hard.
Help me, George.

Somewhere
in the Rossmore district.

Hmm, the Rossmore district.

Thank you, George.

This could make us
look awfully bad.

You got any ideas?

You know,
you just give me 2 things,

2 things to put together,
and I'll add 'em up.

But this...

No clue,

no modus operandi,
no nothing.

If we could only
find a motive.

Or a suspect.

Guess who's here?

Look, I got no time
for games.

Bring him in.

What brings you here, doctor?

Curiosity, I suppose.

Don't touch
the evidence, doctor.

What have you
got to do with her?

Nothing.
Just a friend.

Hmm.

You got any more
friends like her?

I don't understand that.

A report just came in.

We've another case just
like this on the east side.

Police are dispersing
crowds as rapidly as possible,

but more of the curious
keep arriving.

We repeat,

all unauthorized persons are
warned to stay out of the area.

We now return you
to our main studio.

The most incredible thing
in the history of this city.

Police admit themselves
completely baffled.

For those of you
who are just tuning in,

the 37-story
security building.

At first and grand has been
sheared, at the 19th floor,

so cleanly that
it has not yet toppled.

Hello, Miss Dunn? About those
glasses we distributed.

Yes, I know the first 2.

It was George Wilkenson
and Rita Morgan.

But who was the 3rd?

He was a... a rather
thick set man.

So, as we have said, the occurrence
answers to no logical explanation.

Y- yes I'm watching
television now,

but so far he hasn't said
anything about... shh-shh.

Some sort of monster, which
sheared through the walls.

Of his wrought iron shop.

Yes, shh-shh,
I'm listening.

The welder, John Kowalski,
is still being questioned.

By the police, who are, however,
inclined to discredit his testimony,

because, until recently, he is alleged
to have suffered from double vision,

which he claims was cured
by special lenses.

Which he was wearing
at the time of the incident.

Pardon me,
just a moment.

Scientists are being questioned, in the
hope that they can throw some light...

Hello.

Yes, the whole thing
is incredible.

Miss Dunn, I know this is
an imposition at this hour,

but about those glasses
we ordered...

I wonder if you could do
something for me.

I've got a follow-up assignment
on this case, doctor,

and so far we're flying
blind as a bat.

As far as your brother's
concerned...

Any answer yet,
Miss Willet?

Not yet, sir.

I assure you, I have no idea what my
brother was doing in that apartment.

If he claims to have
been there as a friend,

I see no reason
to disbelieve him.

Certainly not because of what
happened to the building.

What...

What kind of a thing could cut
through an entire building?

A laser could do it,
of course.

A laser can cut through anything,
but not on a broad front.

The essence of laser power is a
concentration of light energy.

What about this monster that
Kowalski's supposed to have seen?

Such a thing would defy every
known scientific principle.

It would have
to be a... monster.

Haven't you heard
from my brother yet?

Not yet, sir.

You were saying it would
have to be what, doctor?

Oh, please.

Until we have time to assemble
and examine all the evidence,

it's ridiculous
to speculate.

I'm sorry, sir,
his home doesn't answer.

Then try his office,

and keep ringing.

Half the time he doesn't even
answer his phone!

Yes, doctor.

Dr. Stone?

Hmm?

Dr. Stone?

What is it? What?

Oh, Miss Dunn, I'm terribly sorry.
Have you been here long?

I came as quickly
as I could.

Fine, fine.

Please, come over here
and sit down.

There was enough quartz
for 2 pair.

Splendid, splendid.

Miss Dunn, you've been
with me some time.

3 years.

Well, that should
be long enough.

What do you think of me?

I beg your pardon?

Well, I mean, uh, do you think
of me in terms of, uh...

Do you think I'm
a rational human being?

Well, I know it's a...
It's a silly question,

but you must be aware of the
fact that people say that I'm...

Irresponsible and, uh,
absent-minded, and, uh...

Oh, what was that other word that Det.
Runyan used?

Uh, a weirdo?

Does it matter
what anyone says?

Well, I'm not
irresponsible.

I'm a trifle preoccupied from
time to time, that's true,

but that doesn't
necessarily mean, uh...

What I'm trying
to say is,

supposing I told you
something that seemed

totally incomprehensible,

would you believe it
or would you think

it was just another
of my idiosyncrasies?

I think I'd believe most
anything you told me.

Thank you, Miss Dunn.

I must warn you though,
even so eminent a scientist

as my brother thought I was a
little lightheaded when I told him.

Didn't you used
to wear your hair differently?

No, sir.

That's strange...

All of a sudden
you look different.

Dr. Stone?

Yes.

You were about to tell me
something I wouldn't believe.

Hmm.

Oh, exactly...

As you know, Miss Dunn, there's
something running around this city

that isn't exactly
of this world.

I don't know how it got here,
but I have a suspicion

it's desperately trying to get
back to where it came from.

Well, where's that?

I don't know that, either.

But I do know it's a world
other than this one.

How can you be sure?

Well, this thing,
whatever it is,

exists in only 2 planes
of reference. Somewhat, uh...

Well, it's somewhat like an image
on a motion picture screen.

And it's alive?

Oh, very much so.

Well, how is that possible?

That's another question
I can't answer.

But I saw it right here
in this office, this morning.

Now, why... why should
these particular lenses

make him visible
when nothing else does?

Perhaps because
they're made from material

which came from
another world.

What?

Meteoric quartz.

You said it had unusual
refraction indices.

That's it!

I'd forgotten. Meteoric quartz.
Of course!

And it was this thing
that attacked you?

I don't think he
really meant to attack me.

I think he wanted to get the glasses
away from me so that I couldn't see him.

But why?

Well, as long as he remained
invisible, he felt reasonably safe,

but when he realized that I was seeing
him, he came after the glasses.

He also took the names and addresses of
the people that had the other 3 pair.

What?

I couldn't remember
Kowalski's name.

I came back and I found
the page Missing.

That's how he located Wilkenson and
Kowalski and, of course, poor Miss Morgan.

Then he's rational.

Not only is he rational,
he is highly intelligent.

I wish there was some way
I could communicate with him.

Perhaps there is.

How?
What do you mean?

Well, he knows you designed
the spectacles and...

Doesn't that indicate
that he may come back here?

James, I've got
to talk to you.

Well, come in,
I'm always accessible.

This is my secretary.
Miss Dunn,

this is my brother,
Dr. Bernard Stone.

How do you do?
How do you do, doctor?

James,

this is a matter
of the utmost urgency.

Very well.

You came to me
with some wild story

about a 2-dimensional creature
that can cut through walls.

Yes.

Well, I'm afraid I may have been...
Well, I was a little brusque.

Bernie, what is it
you want?

James, I must know.

Were you in earnest?

Did you really
see something?

Yes!

But how?

How could anything just
slice through a building?

I've been thinking
about that,

and in my opinion,
he's a living laser,

composed of concentrated light particles
that expand or contract at will.

But such a thing would have destructive
powers beyond comprehension.

True, but with all this
formidable power at his disposal,

doesn't it strike you as curious
that he hasn't done more damage?

Great Scott, man!

He sliced through
a building!

Are you trying to say
that isn't destructive?

Why, if that building
had been occupied,

any number of people
might have been killed!

I know. All I'm trying to say is that
I'm convinced it wasn't intentional.

Bernie, if he could destroy that
building, he could just as easily

destroy this entire city!

And just because the damage is
unintentional, are we supposed to stand by

and watch, while this
thing, whatever it is,

spreads unlimited havoc?

He's a living entity.

He's caught in a world he
doesn't understand and he's...

He's frightened.

You think!

I'll bet my life on it.

He could have killed me right here in
the office this morning, and he didn't.

Yes.

Never mind. There's something
I want to talk to you about.

I just heard that this,
uh, this welder, uh...

What's his name?
Kowalski.

Yes, uh, Kowalski,

was wearing a pair
of spectacles that

you made for him
when he saw this thing.

That's true.

And I also recall that
you were wearing spectacles

at the time you claimed
to have seen it.

Yes.

Are these the ones?

Leave those alone.

Very interesting.

Bernie,
give me those glasses.

Meteoric quartz,
I think you said, huh?

All in good time.

I don't see anything so
unusual about these glasses.

As a matter of fact,
they...

My...

Is it?

Yes.

Elizabeth,
please don't.

I want to see.

If you can understand me,

do you have a name?

I am called Eck.

How is it you can
communicate with us?

I cannot explain.

I absorb.

I integrate.

I know.

When you attacked me,
were you afraid of being seen?

Yes.

Why have you changed?

I am no longer afraid. I am
aware that you wish to help me.

I'd do anything
I can to help, but...

I don't know
where to begin.

You know about light
and vision.

I am almost blind.

It is why I have closed
so many eyes.

They are not normally
a part of you?

I do not see with
what you call eyes,

but when I broke
the time barrier,

something happened
to my senses.

I cannot seem
to find my way back.

How did you get here?

Through a time warp.

You would not understand.

I opened a narrow passage
into your world.

I came through by mistake.

Now, I cannot
find my way back.

But you must know
where the passage is.

Yes, I know.

It is above the public square.

Well, if you know where it is, why
can't you go back through it?

I have told you,
I cannot see it clearly.

My vision is blurred.

But if it is left open and something
of your world goes through it,

it may rip the entire
fabric of time.

And destroy the world.

But what can we
do to help?

I need the lenses you can make
to correct my vision.

I have designed my eyes
on your principles,

but something is wrong.

I've been through a
half dozen laboratories.

Searching for other lenses,
but nothing helps,

not even the ones you made.

You must make
a new lens for me.

To do that,
I would need your eyes.

I will give you one.

Here.

Gentlemen, I know you find
this difficult to believe,

and I don't blame you.

When my brother first came
to me with the news

that he had seen this thing,
I didn't believe him, either.

But you know me.
You know my reputation.

You know I do not
imagine horrors.

I tell you, I saw this thing
through those glasses.

And I am not going
out of my mind.

No one thinks you are going
out of your mind, doctor.

These frames belong
to Kowalski, the welder,

who claims he saw
the same thing you saw.

George Wilkenson
owned these.

He drove his car
through freeway divider

into a multiple collision.

Those frames were found near
the scene of the accident.

And... Rita Morgan

died early this evening
of a heart attack

induced, as we now think, by the sight
of the same thing you described.

My brother made all these?

Well, they were ground
by the delta optical,

but designed
by Dr. James Stone.

And he also provided material
for their manufacture.

I can't contradict it.

As a potential
for destruction

beyond our comprehension.

The problem is
how do you fight it?

Well, how do you attack
something you don't even see?

My brother made these,

it's logical to assume
that he has more.

All right, doctor.
Let's go.

There is a time limit.

What?

There is nothing
on your planet to sustain me.

I cannot assimilate
3- dimensional food.

I'm growing weaker.

If I die, the time passage
will remain open.

Sooner or later,
a bird, or an aircraft,

or something,
will go through it.

And destroy your world.

Only I can close it
as I leave.

How much time
do I have?

I only can survive
between sunrises...

24 hours.

24 hours?

What's left of it,
that is.

I can survive until the sun
comes up again.

I'll do the best I can,
but 24 hours? Even less?

Yes?

Sorry to disturb you,
doctor,

but we'd like
to talk to you.

Come in.

I don't quite know how
to begin this, but...

Supposing you start
by telling me what you want.

We want your help.

To do what?

To capture this thing
that's terrorizing the city.

To capture him,
or to destroy him?

James, if you had
any sense at all...

I'll do the talking,
doctor, if you don't mind.

Now, your brother
has explained your position.

You think this thing
doesn't intend any harm.

He doesn't.

How can you
be sure of that?

You'll just have
to take my word for it.

I see.

Well, I'd like you to look at it from
my standpoint for a moment, doctor.

My job is to protect
the public.

I'm aware of that
and I assure you,

if you do nothing,

if you'll just trust me,
there will be no more trouble.

You're asking
a great deal.

That's because I have to.

Why?

I can't explain, but I promise you
there'll be no more incidents.

All I ask is 8 hours.

To do what?

You wouldn't understand.

In the meantime, I don't suppose
you'd be willing to provide us

with some glasses,
just in case.

Sorry.

So am I, doctor.

But let me warn you
of one thing.

If what your brother says
is true,

if the destruction potential
of this so-called monster

is as great
as he thinks it is,

then the lives of every
man, woman and child

in this city
is in your hands.

And I hope you're aware of the
enormity of that responsibility.

Couldn't he be forced
to cooperate?

I don't know how, but I'm sure
going to try and find a way.

I hope he knows
what he's doing.

Eck.

Eck, are you still here?

I am here.

I'm sorry about
what happened.

Why do they want
to destroy me?

They're afraid of you.

I do not mean any harm.

I know that,
but they don't.

I was frightened.

By what?

By your welder,
Kowalski.

He had a fire gun. Fire
can destroy me instantly,

as it would paper
or dry leaves.

I understand.

In my world, nothing
can prevail against fire.

Eck, can you tell us a little
something about your world?

You could not understand.

It is too different, too far removed
from anything you could imagine.

It is not even a world at all,
as you think of it.

I see.

Elizabeth, would you turn
on the television set?

Eck, I think you'd
better stay here.

You'll be safer here.

I will remain.

Good.

The terrifying prospect
of dealing with this building.

That stands in our
midst so precariously.

City officials
have been in constant...

He's 2-dimensional.

It is their feeling that
a disaster is not imminent.

Repeat, a disaster
is not...

Maybe he can show me
the way out!

Eck, Eck, no!

No, no, Eck, no!

Look, he's luminous!

The electricity is
probably disseminated.

Now everyone can see him.

He's my brother, but I have never
been able to figure him out.

What did he mean
when he promised us

that nothing else
would happen?

Heaven only knows.

All my life, I've been
trying to understand him.

But this, it's just impossible
to believe that the government

can't find some way
to force him to cooperate.

Your brother's a private
citizen, Dr. Stone.

He has certain
inalienable rights.

Well, but not when the safety of
the entire country is at stake.

It seems to me there should
be some sort of writ or order

that could be
issued against him.

Dr. Stone, you can order
a man to be seized,

you can order a man
to be searched,

and you can order a man to cease
and desist whatever he's doing,

but there is no order
that can make a man talk

when he refuses to talk.

Ah!

And you say, Mr. Grayson,
you jumped clear of the car

an instant before
it caught fire.

I'm lucky to be alive.

And this, uh, thing, this
monster, was still there?

Oh, it was there, all right.
You can be sure of that.

Hovering around,

glowing
and shooting off sparks.

But it, uh, left

the moment
the gas tank exploded.

Like a banshee.

Fire.

That's our weapon.
Sergeant, get on the phone.

Tell them we need
a flamethrower.

Right.

Now if it shows up again, we'll
know how to deal with it.

Yes, well,
suppose it doesn't?

Well, there's just one man who
can tell us if it's going to.

I'll go and talk to him.

Well, you just do that, doctor.
And you lay it on the line,

because if he's protecting that
thing, he's in a lot of trouble.

I'll make sure
he understands.

Eck, Eck,
I think I've got it.

Elizabeth!
Elizabeth!

I found the key, look.

This is the formula for the normal
aberrational coefficients, right?

Now, this is the same formula altered by
the sign for young's aplanatic spheres

and corrected for X,
relative refraction index.

In this case, a plus 3
as opposed to a plus 1.

But aren't these formulas based
on a standard optic geometry?

Of course,
that's the point.

They must be.

And the lenses
will be made of glass.

Not meteoric quartz?

Eck is from another world.

We need material from another
world in order to see him.

By the same token, for him to
see us in our environment,

his eyes must be
corrected by our lenses.

Eck, I don't know
if you'll understand this,

but on earth,
optical systems

can generally have only one
set of aplanatic surfaces.

But the eyes you have made for
yourself have at least 12.

We also have coefficients of
aberrations, numbering as many as 35.

But your system has 280.

Now, that's 5 times
the earth maximum.

I'm sorry to have
caused so much difficulty.

Oh, that's all right.
That isn't important.

The only thing that's important
is that we correct your vision.

And I think I can, only...

Only, what?

Only how can it
be done in time?

I'll have to make the lenses
myself, Miss Dunn... or Elizabeth...

You know what I'll need,
will you get it for me?

Yes, sir.

Where's my brother?

I'm sorry, doctor.
You can't go in there.

And why not?

Because Dr. Stone
cannot be disturbed.

Young lady, will you
please stand out of my way?

What do you want, Bernie?

Well, I... I want
to talk to you.

I don't think you and I have
anything further to talk about.

You had better
listen to me.

We know how to destroy
your monster.

Oh?

With fire!

We expect your help, James.

I think you'd better
get out of here, Bernie,

before I throw you out.

Now, don't you threaten me.

I came here to help you, to
try and make you see reason.

I know you've got
some crazy idea

about wanting to protect
this monstrosity of yours.

Why? I will never know.

But do you realize there are
over a 100 people hospitalized,

that half the city's power
lines are out of comMission,

all because of this creature
that you claim is harmless?

I never said
he was harmless!

I simply said he didn't intend
any harm, and he doesn't!

And you also gave your
word to the police

that there would be
no more trouble!

Well...

I never dreamed...

No, that's just the point.

You don't know what
that thing is liable to do.

What's to prevent, boom,
next time, the whole city.

There won't be
any next time!

No? And who do you
think will believe that now?

Bernie, you and I have never
seen eye to eye on anything,

but listen to me
just this once.

Eck blundered
into our world.

All he's trying to do
is find his way back

to where he came from.

Pure supposition.

No, no, take my word for it.

He came through
a passageway in time.

And that doorway
is still open.

If anything should fall through the
opening, like a bird or a plane,

it could rip the fabric
of time and destroy our world.

How do you know all this?

I've spoken to him.

You've spo...

You'll say anything,
won't you?

You'll say anything,
and you'll do anything,

so long as you can keep on
masterminding this whole affair.

Bernie, for once in your life,
take something on faith.

This poor, frightened creature
is risking his life to save us.

Save us?

He doesn't want
the disaster to happen,

he's trying to prevent it.

And this is the thing
you want to destroy.

The admiral is right.

You should be locked up.

I bet you've got that thing in
here right now, haven't you?

Bernie, get out!

We're coming
after him, James.

I just hope and pray you
don't try to stop us.

Eck? Eck?

He's gone.

Well, he must have overheard the
talk about chasing him with fire.

He's visible now,
they'll be able to find him.

What do we do?

I'm sure he'll come back.

If I can just make those lenses in
time, perhaps there's still a chance.

Well, what did you
find out?

Not very much.

What about that thing?
That monster?

Is it up there now?

That's what I don't know.

I tried to get into my brother's
private office, but he came out,

slammed the door
behind him.

Then it must be there.

We've got every inch of that building
surrounded, haven't we, sergeant?

Every inch.

Now, remember now
it's luminous.

All we have to do
is look for a glow.

I don't think he
can get away from us now.

How soon will
that flamethrower be here?

About 6 minutes.

Well, I think we're
on the right track.

I'll go and get
the men alerted.

And now, let's have
a look at the weather situation.

Santa Clara county and surrounding
country may expect...

Well, that completes it.

Mid-morning temperatures should
be in the mid-70s tomorrow,

with a possible high of...

And now for the frame.

And the front, moving in from the
west, should arrive in the area.

Tomorrow evening,
bringing lower temperatures.

With possible showers during the
night, clearing by mid-morning.

The mountain and resort areas
may expect a few snow flurries.

From the storm, with increasing
northwesterly winds.

The weather bureau
reports, however,

that the balance of the week
should be clear and sunny.

I'm so glad, doctor, for him.

Warning!

The police are
ordering all citizens.

Out of the area adjacent to the
optical center research building.

On maple street and 27th.

There is a report that "the thing"
is trapped in the building.

A blockade is being drawn
around all entrances.

What in the world
will we do?

All right,
move in, move in.

You must not do this.

Jackson, get
this man out of here.

But I can save him. There's
no need to harm him.

James, it's out of your hands, now.
The thing must go.

Jackson!

Eck!

Clear this room,
everybody.

There it is.

All right.

Let him have it.

Let's clear out of here.

I'm sorry, James.

I'll bet you are.

How does it feel to be
a deliberate murderer?

We destroyed a monster.

A thing that was a
menace to the lives and

property of all the
people in this community.

Dr. Stone.

Eck.

I'm here.

But I thought...

I wasn't actually
in the office.

But the glow...

I transferred
some of my energy.

To the statue
near the table.

Eck, you're wonderful.

Thank you.

And I want
to thank you, doctor,

before it's too late,

for what you tried
to do to help me.

It was too much
to expect in so short a time.

Might have been more merciful if
they'd succeeded in destroying him.

The lens!

You have it!

I only had time to make one,
but I think it'll work.

I can see.

Now I can find the opening
of the passageway into time.

Oh, thank you.

I'll remember you both,
always.

We'll remember you,
too, Eck.

It's 3-dimensional.

It won't go through the wall.

It is a problem.

Here. Give it to me.

We'll meet you
at the square.

I will wait for you.

Shall we go down to the square
and say goodbye to a friend?

Paradoxically,
man's endless search.

For knowledge has too often
plundered his courage.

And warped his vision,

so that he has faced
the unknown with terror.

Rather than awe,

and probed the darkness
with a scream.

Rather than a light.

Yet, there have
always been men.

Who have touched
the texture of tomorrow.

With understanding
and with courage.

Through these men, we may
yet touch the stars.

We now return control of your
television set to you.

Until next week,
at the same time,

when the control voice
will take you to...

The outer limits.
