The Outer Limits (1995–2002): Season 6, Episode 5 - Breaking Point - full transcript

A scientist is fired because his employers don't believe in his time travel theories. He uses his time machine to prove them wrong, only to arrive to see his wife die two days into the future and see himself drive away.

Hey, Karl.

I just heard.

I can't believe it.

No notice, nothing?

I guess giving them
24 hours a day

for the last three years
wasn't good enough.

What did they say?

The company appreciated

my vast contributions
to the cps 1200

and hoped
I would find

my Severance package
satisfactory.

Bastards.

Vast contributions?

Without you, this whole machine
wouldn't exist.

I don't think Ted

Would agree
with you.

Well, everybody knows
the cps is your baby.

So what happened?

I insisted the machine's ready
for its first trial.

Ted wants to re-Run
all the theoreticals.

Take three months, maybe more.

You know Ted -- He's cautious.

Cautious?

If Ted ran
the space program

we'd still be orbiting
chimpanzees.

This isn't about
safety.

It's about Ted's ego.

He wants me gone
before the damn thing's unveiled

so I don't get the spotlight.

I'm sorry we're losing you.

Look, I'm late for a meeting.

Give me
a call tomorrow.

We'll grab a drink.

Three more months
of mathematical calculations.

What a waste.

Uh-Uh, Ted.

You do the math.

Set it for two days from now.

Of course, if I'm wrong...

my molecules will be scattered
across time.

( buzzer sounding )

Yes! It worked.

Oh.

Karl!

Karl.

Andrew,
what are you doing here?

I just came
from the Mach--

You've got to get
out of here.

The police are looking
for you.

What do
the police want?

Go!

Susan?

Susan.

Susan, you home?

Oh, my God.

Hey.

Stop! Hey!

Stop!

Nothing in our world is
more unyielding

than the inexorable March
of time.

But what will happen
when man finds a way

to manipulate
that awesome force?

Susan.

9-1-1,
emergency operator.

No, no, no.

I couldn't have.

I couldn't have.

I got to go back.

Come on, come on.

I got to travel back to Monday.

( buzzer sounding )

I'm back.

Susan!

Andrew?
I saw your car out front.

What are you doing home?

I wanted to see you.

Something happened
at work today.

No, don't tell me
that you were--

Why do you always jump to
the most negative conclusion?

Well, I'm sorry,
but you're never home this early

and I know you're not
getting along with Ted.

It has nothing to do
with Ted.

Then what is it?

Look...

it's just, it's complicated.

You were fired, weren't you?

Okay, all right, yes.

I got laid off.
Andrew, I'm sorry.

I know how much
this job meant to you.

I really thought you found
your niche this time.

Yeah, well, so did I.

Look,

Susan, when I joined
Anderson technology

they put me in charge
of developing

a chronological phase-Shifter.

It's a fancy name for what's
essentially a time machine.

A time machine.

It allows the user to be
transported through time.

So why after three years
are you telling me this now?

Because I tested it today...

and it works.

By testing it,
you're saying what?

You traveled back in time?

Forward, actually.
I went ahead two days.

And?

And...

I was so overwhelmed
that it actually worked

that I came straight home
to share the news with you

and...when I got here...

yes?

When I got here,

you were lying on the floor
in the den.

You were in a pool of blood.

You'd been shot.

And killed.

Andrew, I want you
to tell me the truth.

Have you been drinking?

Do you understand
what I'm telling you?

If we don't divert
the time stream

in two days
you are going to die.

Now, our best bet is

we change the circumstances
leading up to your murder.

That's it.
We have to leave town.

Andrew, Andrew,
listen to yourself.

You tell me
that you've been fired,

that you beamed yourself
into the future

and you found me dead.

I have a hard time
swallowing this.

I know, it sounds insane.

But you have to believe me.

Remember that night
you lost $3,000 in a poker game

and you told me
you'd been mugged?

That was
a long time ago, Susan.

If something bad happens

you fabricate
some wild story.

No, this is different.

How is this different?

Because I'm not lying.

Because This is the truth!

Okay, okay, we'll talk
about it, all right?

Don't you patronize me!

I'm trying
to save your life here.

So am I, Andrew.

So am I.

"Did I actually break
the temporal Barrier,

"or did I imagine
the whole thing?

"Am I succumbing
to some horrible psychosis?

"Could I ever kill
my own wife?

"I have my weaknesses,
god knows,

"But could I possibly descend
to that kind of violence?

"is there anything
in this world

that would drive me
to do something so heinous?"

I'm just telling you
what he told me.

So there is
no time machine?

I have no idea what's
going on in his head, Karl.

Obviously the stress

of losing his job
has been too much.

Anyways, I would
really appreciate it

if you kept this between us.

Thanks.

I'll call you tomorrow.

You talking to Karl?

I was worried about you.

So you sneak
behind my back,
you talk to him.

He told me this time machine is
a pet project of yours,

but that it's just a pipedream
at this point.

Why would you make up
such an outrageous story?

It is not...it is not a story!

Why can't you believe me?

I am trying, but--
trying!

Oh, my god.
You shouldn't
have to try!

I don't know
what's going on, Andrew,

but I can't do this
anymore.

You can't do
what?

I can't live
like this.

What are you saying?

I think we need to spend
some time apart.

No...no, no, no, Susan.

We just have to make it
through the next few days

And everything will be fine.

Andrew, everything is
not going to be fine.

I'm not even saying
that it's all you.

I mean, sometimes people...

look, I can't go on pretending.

If you don't mind, I'd like you
to sleep downstairs tonight.

No, Susan--

If you don't,
I will.

I have to clean up this mess.

No, look, uh...

I'll, uh...
let me do that.

That's all right.

Good night, Andrew.

"the jolts of pain

"Are increasing in Frequency
and intensity.

"At times,
they're almost unbearable --

"Like being stabbed in
the brain with a molten blade.

"Apparently some kind
of neural reaction

"to the time-Travel process.

"Maybe Ted was right.

"What's worse are the visions.

"Nightmarish images
about Susan's death,

"Images I can't quite decipher,
or don't want to.

"I don't know if they're
flashes of the past

"or the future, or both.

"I've contemplated
leaving town by myself.

"if I am the killer,
then Susan would be safe.

"But what if I'm not
the killer?

"The irony is, either way

I'm the only one
who can save her."

Morning.

Morning.

How are you
feeling?

I'm okay.

Susan,

about last night...

look, I'm sorry
that you had
to hear all that.

Maybe it's a blessing
that it's all out.

We have to figure out
how to protect you.

Andrew, please.

We still have
more than 24 hours--

You're really scaring me,
you know that?

I'm trying to scare you.

If I could just get you
into the lab,

you could see the machine.

You should make
an appointment

with Dr. Berger
this afternoon.

I don't need to see
a psychotherapist.

You need to talk
to somebody.

I need to talk to you.

Karl vandermeer
gave you

the corporate line, Susan.

He wouldn't tell you the truth
about the cps 1200.

I really don't know
what else to say.

Say you believe me.

Look, I have
some prospective buyers

meeting me
in 20 minutes.

Why don't you get some rest?

We'll talk more
about this later.

Susan.

Sorry.

I didn't mean to hurt you.

Andrew, please.

Call Dr. Berger.

"My wife thinks I've snapped.

"Maybe I have.

"I can't sleep.

"It's getting more and more
difficult to think,

"to think straight
Or to control myself

and now
Susan Wants to leave me."

Damn!

Los Angeles.

This Friday.

Karl.

Thanks for coming.

No problem.

You look, uh, tired.

Yeah.

Can I have the same?

So I...

heard you talked
to Susan last night.

Yes, she's very concerned
about you.

Told her the cps 1200
is just a fantasy?

What could I say?

We all signed
confidentiality waivers.

Now she thinks I'm lying.

Thinks
--You're lying?

You told her you time-Traveled.

I did.

That's impossible.
The machine is not running yet.

Yes, it is.

You're serious, aren't you?

Uh-huh.

You tested it on yourself?

You believe me, don't you?

Karl, I need your help.

I know events in history
can vary

according to temporal
and spatial perspective,

but I need the bottom line.

Can history be altered?

Theoretically, but we never had
a chance to test it.

So someone could change
a specific outcome

by changing the circumstances
leading up to it.

That's one school.

The other, um, time travel camp
are fatalists.

They posit that
no matter what you do

the outcome is inevitable.

You mean, I travel back
to november 22nd, 1963,

I shoot Oswald

before
he kills Kennedy,

Kennedy still gets
Assassinated?

Thank you.

The fatalist conjecture
is that someone else

would have been in the texas
book depository with a rifle.

Right, right, right.

Personally,
I disagree.

As far as I'm concerned,

you take Oswald
out of the equation

and Kennedy leaves Dallas
without a scratch.

Unless, of course,
you're one of those

"Grassy Knoll"
Conspiracy theorists.

What is this all about?

Are you planning on
going back

and trying to save
Kennedy's life?

No, no, it's, um...

it's someone
much more important.

Andrew, I'm home.

What's it
remind you of?

Andrew, don't.

Don't tell me
you don't remember.

The honeymoon suite
at the
mauna Lea.

What is all this?

I phoned
the office today

to see how you did
on the house.

They told me
you sold it,

full asking price.

Congratulations.

You always did know
how to make the perfect Martini.

It's one of my few Remaining
social skills.

Susan, I...
I'm so sorry.

I promise you,
from now on,

things are going
to be different.

Andrew, this is lovely.

The martinis

and the flowers, but...

it's not really that easy.

You put all of that
out of your mind, okay?

'cause tonight is
for celebrating, okay?

Do you remember
how much in love we were?

Oh, well, you do have
a good memory.

No, I'm serious.

I'm still the same guy
that made you smile

that first night we met.

And that was
just by chance.

You were the most beautiful
woman I'd ever seen.

Oh, well, it's easy to impress
a man who spends half his life

chained to
a lab bench.

It was fate, you know.

Our meeting --
You always said so.

Andrew...

look, you really helped me
through a very rough time,

but that was seven years ago.

We can have that back --
I know we can.

Wishing something
isn't enough, Andrew.

I know,
because I've spent

too much of my life
doing just that.

I still love you.

And I know
deep down, Susan,

you love me too.

Andrew.

Enough.

Close your eyes.

Please, just...

okay.

Can I open them?

Yeah.

What's this?

It's just my way of saying

congratulations
on the sale of the house.

Hawaii.

I booked that suite
at the
mauna Lea.

Leaving tomorrow Morning?

Mm-hmm.

Come on, you spend a few days,
you'd relax on the beach.

I've just got to

clean up
a few loose ends here,

but I'll join you
on thursday.

Oh, um, Andrew,
this is really very sweet,

but I, I can't.

Why not?

Because I don't think
it would be fair.

Not to me and not to you.

Would it have anything to do
with that?

What are you doing with that?

Were you
digging through
my personal things?

What's in Los Angeles?

A realtors' convention.

Why are you
keeping it a secret?

I only found out about it
the other day.

We haven't had time
to discuss it.

Andrew, do you see
what's happening here?

This is one of our big problems.
You don't trust me.

That's not True.

So this big romantic trip
to hawaii --

Was this your way
of getting me out of town

for my alleged safety

or keeping me from
going to Los Angeles?

No, it was my way

of putting our crumbling
marriage back together.

The sentiment was nice,

but the execution left
a lot to be desired.

Where are you going?

Out.

Susan.

Susan,
come back here.

Sure you don't want
anything stronger?

I can open
a bottle of wine.

No, this is great.

Where's Dave?

Coeur D'Alene --
Golf trip with the boys.

You ever wonder
about these golf trips?

I trust him, Andrew.

Besides, if I ever found out
Dave was fooling around on me

I'd surgically remove
his putter

and frame it
with his other golf trophies.

You and my sister are having

a rough go
of it again.

Yeah, everything's
falling apart.

I lost my job.

She told me.
I'm sorry.

Amy,

Susan's planning on leaving me.

I know.

I just, I don't understand

why she doesn't want to work
our problems out.

She's been trying to talk to you
for years, Andrew.

She's beyond trying.

I love her so much, Amy.

Nice words, but what
have you done to show her?

Have I really been
that lousy a husband?

I could give you
a one-Word answer,

but you know
how I hate being Blunt.

How did I let my priorities
get so screwed up?

At least you're asking
the right question.

Unfortunately,
I think it's too far gone.

Too many years of neglect.

Is she seeing someone?

Maybe you should be having
this conversation with her.

Then it's True,
isn't it?

Andrew, if she is
having an affair,

she hasn't told me
about it.

I honestly don't think
that's Susan.

But if we're going to be
brutally Frank here,

I wouldn't blame her
if she was trying

to fill up some
of that emptiness.

I have to talk to her.

Do you know where she is?

She called a little while ago
from the sonora cafe.

That's...

that's where we first met.

I'm so glad
I ran into you.

Me too.

To the best salesperson
I've ever met.

You were awesome
on that close today.

I wouldn't have even made
the sale if it wasn't for you.

Well, teamwork is
what it's all about.

And we make
a great team.

Andrew.

Needless to say,
you weren't expecting me?

Let me introduce you
to Craig Swenson.

Craig is our new
office manager.

Hi, nice to meet you.

Susan,
let's go home.

No, Craig and I are talking
about the conference.

You're going to l.A. Too?

Yeah.

Yeah?

Why?

Oh, god, he thinks
we're having an affair.

Whoa.

Uh, listen,
I just met Susan last week.

So once you get to know her
better, then you'll screw her.

Oh, my god.
This is ridiculous.

I apologize for
my husband, Craig.

I'll see you in the office
tomorrow.

Susan, Susan.

It might be best if you stayed
someplace else tonight.

I'm serious.
I can't take any more of this.

You're under arrest.

What for?

No, you don't understand.

It's a life-Or-Death situation.

I have to save her.

You've got to believe me!

I'm so glad you're here.

What in god's name is going on?

They told me you broke into
the lab last night.

I wanted to go forward in time
to protect you.

How can you keep doing this?

I would do anything to stop
what is going to happen today.

You shouldn't be worrying
about me.

We don't have much time.

Let's get out of here.

They're not releasing you yet.

What do you mean?

Anderson
--Is pressing charges.

Well, uh...

what about bail?

You got to call me a lawyer.

I already called one.

You're being transferred
to a county facility

so you can meet
with a lawyer

when you get there.

I set up an appointment
for you to see a neurologist.

Anything you want.

I want you to get better.

Please take care of yourself.

Wait, wait, Susan!

You can't go.

You can't leave.
You are going to die.

Susan! Susan!

Susan, don't go!

Susan!

Listen to me!

Susan! Susan!

Please, send someone over
to protect my wife!

She's in danger!

Just, just send somebody

to protect my wife!

Oh, cool it, man.

My wife's going to be murdered
in a few hours.

What are you talking about?

Someone's going to shoot her.

Well, how do you...
how do you know that?

I know you're not going
to believe me,

but I traveled forward
in time

and I witnessed
her murder.

What part of that
didn't you think I'd believe?

I know, it sounds crazy.

I've heard crazier.

Who shot her?

I'm not sure.

It might have been me.

Well, look on the bright side.

If you're locked up,
you can't do her any harm.

But what if I just showed up
after she was shot

or what if
in that time stream

I was the murderer,

but in this time stream
she's killed by Somebody else?

I'd say you got yourself
a real conundrum.

I got to get out of here.

Mclaren?

Let's go.

Hands.

Come with me,
tough guy.

What the hell you doing?

I was going to ask you
the same thing.

I wanted to see
if Susan was home.

I thought you were in Jail.

Yeah, sorry to disappoint you.

You want
to hurt my wife?

I came here to help move some
things to her sister's house.

She can't do this to me.

Hey, I think you better--

Andrew!

What do you think you're doing?

I came...came back
to save you.

You call this saving me?

He was spying on you.

I asked him to come
and help me.

We have to work this out.

There is nothing to work out.

No, don't say that!

Call the police.

Oh, my god -- Andrew.

Andrew, calm down.

I am calm.

Put the gun away.

You and I need to talk.

All right,
just put the gun away.

Oh, my god!

Susan!

No!

Susan!

Andrew, I'm begging you.
Don't hurt me.

I'm not going to hurt you.

Why do you keep
saying that?
I'm sorry.

You're just not
yourself.

I am, yes, I am.

I want to protect you
and I want us to be together.

Okay, okay.

No, no.

Let me go out
and get the boxes.

No.

Susan.

I didn't mean it, I swear.

I only wanted to protect you.

There's still a chance.

I love you.

I always have.

Karl!

Andrew, what are you
doing here?

Going on a trip.

You can't.

Yes, I can --
There's my ticket.

Get security here,
right away!

Get out of here!

Get out of here!

( buzzer sounding )

What do you want?

I just want to tell you
that your theories are right.

What do you know
about my theories?

Everything.

My god.

You...

you're me.

I did it.

Time travel's a reality.

More or less.

What's happening to you?

There's still a few bugs
in the system.

Unfortunately,

you're not going to be around
to exalt in your triumph.

Got to change
the time stream.

Can't let you
meet Susan.

Who?
Make things right.

Don't do this.

There's no other way.

Another fresh one.
