The Odyssey (1992–1994): Season 1, Episode 10 - In the Dark - full transcript

(dramatic music)

- [Alpha] The shelter's
gonna leak if it rains,

maybe we should find a
better place to hide out.

- Too risky, if we get someone to help us

they might turn us in.

Jay, come help us with some branches!

- Come here, Jay!

(dramatic music)

- Jay!

- Jay!

- What the hell is that?

- It's a sensory deprivation tank.

- Well, correct me if I'm
wrong, but isn't being in a coma

about as sensory deprived as one can get?

- We've been overloading
Jay's sensory system.

I figure if we shut it down completely...

- Then go at it with hammer and tongs.

- Contrast.

- Yeah.

(birds chirping)

(dramatic music)

- They got him.

- Look, it's Finger again.

- The tower wants me, and
I wanna go to the tower.

So just take me there.

- Prisoner escorts, we're going in.

Right!

- I'm going in.

- No! It's some kind of
scientific research place.

It's dangerous.

- It doesn't matter.

We still gotta get him out.

- I never knew this thing was in here.

What are you doing?

- We're sending Jay on a little trip.

- Where to, outer space?

- More like inner space, and back again.

And I will go get our astrolyte.

(dramatic music)

- Take these to the others, in there.

Do you understand?

- Uh-uh.

- Do it now.

- [Jay] Hey!

- What are you doing
with this kid, Finger?

Untie him.

- I'm doing my duty to the tower, Fractal.

And I'm here to see you do the same.

- You got the wrong place.

This is a research site, not a jail.

- Don't you recognize this face?

- The tower wants him neutralized.

- You're still trying

to get on the tower council, eh Finger?

I won't help you.

- Yes, you will.

You can make him harmless by
doing your research on him,

like you did to these people.

- You know darn well that
what happened was an accident.

It would be inhuman to intentionally
turn someone into that.

- Making zombies out of
your volunteers is okay,

if it's for science,

you never were a team player.

- Watch it, Finger, I'm
still on the tower council.

You take orders from me.

- In the tower maybe,

but I've got six monitors waiting outside

and nobody's coming in or out
until this kid's a zombie.

So whatever it is you do to
people's brains, just do it.

(Fractal sighs)

(birds chirping)

Hey! Is that my hacky
sack you're playing with?

Now we wait.

- Let me go.

You don't have to do what Finger says,

Brad will stick up for you.

- Yeah, he would.

But the world's changed,
everything's politics now.

- But you work for Brad, don't you?

- Brad and I used to
talk long into the night.

- No kidding, you guys are friends?

- He's the only other person I've known

to be interested in the big questions.

We created whole theories about reality.

- Like that?

- Yes, it's a model of the universe.

I believe it has a series
of spheres within spheres,

separated by strong crystal shells.

Outside the sphere is the
great unknowable nothingness,

on the inside of it is the sky.

This is our sphere,

and beyond that, some
as yet unknown realm.

- Is it possible to travel
from one sphere to another?

- Fascinating question, I've
thought about it myself.

In fact, that's what
this experiment is about.

Let him go, now!

- The home I come from, I can't find.

I came here in an elevator.

So maybe the way back is
through one of those shells.

- That would make you
a dimensional traveler.

Maybe you'd recognize my discovery.

I've discovered the shell
to the inner sphere.

- Okay.

Put your legs under.

That's it.

Okay.

(ethereal music)

(dramatic music)

- The crystal face of the
shell is impenetrable,

picks and shovels don't even scratch it.

Look, light!

It's never done that before.

Maybe you are a dimensional traveler.

I know you wanna touch it, but don't.

- I have to.

(suspenseful music)

- Jay.

Jay?

- Mom!

- Jay.

Jay?

- Don't! If you touch it,
you'll become a zombie.

That's what happened to them.

(dramatic music)

I beg of you, be careful.

You could lose your mind.

- I wanna see what's in there.

- That image appeared when
you got near the crystal.

- That image was my mom.

- Your mom.

So does it live right in
the crystal or beyond it?

- No, she's real.

Somewhere, I can't remember where.

- Maybe your unconscious
mind holds the key

to what's on the other side,
if that's where you came from.

Finger wants me to turn you into a zombie,

what a senseless waste.

- Then don't do it.

Help me get through,

get those goons of yours to help.

- They're zombies, not goons.

If Finger gets you to
turn me into a zombie,

it'll be just the beginning.

Then he'll bring in any
kid he doesn't like.

- You're right.

I'm a scientist, not a brain butcher.

Remember, don't touch it with your skin.

(dramatic music)

- Well?

- Okay, he's a zombie.
I hope you're happy.

Now, get out.

- That wasn't so hard now, was it?

So where is he?

- He's no use to anybody as a zombie,

so he's working for me.

He doesn't want anything now

except for three bowls of porridge a day.

- I wanna see him.

- What for?

He's right in the most
dangerous part of the pit.

He's not smart enough to
come out until he's finished.

- Take your stupid games elsewhere!

(suspenseful music)

- I'm telling your, Finger,
the kid's a full zombie.

The worst case I've seen yet.

- You, Jay.

Put that thing down!

Now!

(ax clatters)

- Jay?

- What's your name?

Do you wanna go to the tower?

- Uh-uh.

- We're turning your
friends into tower slaves,

is that okay with you?

- Uh-huh.

- Do you recognize him?

I don't know, shouldn't
there be some scars on his...

- No, don't touch it!

- Nice try, Fractal.

(dramatic music)

- Finger!

Leave us alone!

- How come he didn't turn into a zombie?

- Maybe he is from another world.

- That's it, I'm sealing him in here.

Come on!

(light shuttering)

(dramatic music)

(device beeping)

- [Val] Rough.

- What are you doing?

- I've got to get through
to the other side.

- [Max] Sharp.

- Everybody out!

Clear the area immediately.

Come on, move!

Everybody get out of here!

What are you doing here?

- [Val] Cold.

- Look, you better get out of here.

I'm gonna seal this place up.

- No, you can't!

- Come on, Fractal!

- Stop it, we don't know
what this is going to do.

- I saw my mom through there.

You said it was a different world.

- [Val] Hot.

(dramatic music)

- Okay, move.

Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.

Come on, come on!

Don't just stand there, move it!

Move it!

Let's go!

- We've got to get out of here.

Think about us, Jay.

What if that world wasn't
meant to mix with ours?

What if it destroys us?

Is that the price you wanna
pay for wanting to see more?

- It's my home.

I urge you to reconsider.

Come up, before Finger buries us.

- Come on, morons.

Hustle!

I gotta seal this sucker.

Where's Fractal?

Ugh!

- Jay, get up here!

- Jay, come on!

(ground rumbling)

- Come on, we gotta get out of here.

The whole place is coming down.

Come on, we gotta go.

- We gotta save your
(indistinct), tower boy.

Come on!

- At least when you're sealed in

you'll have plenty of time to
study my model of the universe

- Come on!

- Jay!
- Jay!

- [Val] Jay?

- Mom.

(rocks clatter)

- [Flash] Jay, come up quick.

Alpha's been hurt.

- What are we doing wrong, Jay?

Why won't you come back?

- But mom, it's dangerous.

- Keep trying, you can make it.

- I'm hurting people.

I have to find another way.

- Jay?

- Not this way, mom.

Not this way.

- Jay?

(dramatic music)

- Move!

- Alpha, are you okay?

- Yeah, I am okay.

- Everybody clear!

(explosion blasting)

(water dripping)

(Alpha coughs)

- Anybody see anything?

Any change?

Jay needs something else, Max.

I don't think this is the way.

- I'm sorry, guys.

I know it's all my fault.

I just felt so close.

- I guess we really will have time

to study his model of the universe.

- What do you mean?

- On his way out,

he said we'd have time to study
his model of the universe.

(pensive music)

- It's fresh air, it's
a ventilation shaft.

Come on.

- Another problem solved.

- A small step forward for you,

and a giant leap backwards
for the rest of us.

- Guys like me have to deal
with the hard truths of life,

while you hide behind your little project.

Ready to march?

Come on, guys.

- How's your head?

- It's okay.

What a climb.

- What happened down in that pit?

It was like you were
in some kind of spell.

- Maybe I was.

- Hey, look where we came up.

- [Alpha] The tower!

(calm music)

(dramatic music)
