The Octopus (1984): Season 4, Episode 5 - Episode #1.5 - full transcript

In an attempt to discover the reasons
behind an incomprehensible homicide

committed by Salvatore Frolo, a man
discharged from a psychiatric hospital

who killed Antonio Tindari, the owner
of a casino recently opened up north.

Inspector Cattani meets
up again with Tano Cariddi,

who has become
director of the Antinari Bank.

He is preparing to invest a
substantial amount of Mafia money

on the stock market.

With this in mind, Tano marries Ester,
the daughter of the financier Rasi,

who he has framed with the
help of the sinister Espinosa,

A man of a thousand
powers and mysteries.

Rasi commits suicide.

Ester stands by Tano
for the purpose of revenge

and to lead him to his ruin.

Meanwhile Corrado, who has
gradually fallen in love with

Judge Silvia Conti,

following a courageous
but unsubstantiated report,

is temporarily suspended
by the police force.

After having survived a
terrible attempt on his life,

leaves with Silvia for Sicily,

to search for any trace of
Salvatore Frolo's daughter,

and to search for any
evidence regarding her death.

Once there, he ascertains to
ascertain that Paola Frolo is still living

and that she was adopted by
Tindari, the murdered casino owner,

who for years had kept her hidden
in a boarding school near Milan.

While Tano heads toward
an apex in his shady dealings,

he awaits for approval
from the Mafia families to

eliminate the Godfather

so that he may conclude his
financial dealings with Espinosa.

Corrado returns to Milan,

adamant to continue his battle,
even without Silvia, now too exposed,

in his relentless search for justice.

In Milan, Ester copies the
secret codes out of Tano's agendas,

which comprise the ciphered codes
for the secret events being planned

of the events in progress...

THE OCTOPUS 4

Part Five

- Hello?
- They've accepted.

They're expecting you tomorrow.
I'll pick you up at the airport.

Get in, please...

- Good morning.
- Hurry up! I need to speak to you!

But... can you tell me
what's going on?

- I need to see Corrado at once!
- Well, unfortunately I can't help you.

- The Inspector is no longer...
- I know he's no longer at

police headquarters,
but I need to see him.

You know where he is. You must
tell him that I need to speak to him.

Look, I swear it. The Captain has left
and nobody knows where he is.

But don't you understand?
I need him...

OK, perhaps if I hear from him...

If you hear from him tell him that
it's something which regards Tano!

Have you understood?
Tano Cariddi!

- It's important. He'll understand.
- OK.

- Take everything away.
- You're not having lunch??

- No.
- As you wish.

- Good morning, madam.
- Good morning.

Hello.

It's 3:00. I had lunch taken away.

I'm sorry... I've been to the doctor's.

And on the way back
I hit a bit of traffic.

- Why to the doctor's?
- Because I've always got a headache.

- I just wanted a check up.
- And what did he say?

Nothing. The usual... go for
walks, sleep more, eat more...

But perhaps I should have told him
that after a certain hour in this house,

lunch is no longer served.

Welcome back.

The doorman told me that
you've been gone for a week.

- What are you doing?
- I've decided to transfer

back to the office. It's a bit small,

but it's comfortable for just one person.

The empty bookshelves look sad...

Yes, it's true. Soon I'll also
take away the bookshelves.

- That way you'll have an extra room.
- I don't think I'll live here.

No? That's a shame. It's a
beautiful home and you used to love it.

I can't stay here without you.

Do as you please. I must go now.

- But what will you do?
- I have many projects...

Will you go back to university?

No.

What projects are you
talking about, then?

I would like to
explain politics to people...

in the way I used to explain
the utility of insects to my students.

They would ask me,

"What's a fly good for? It's annoying,
it's ugly and it's dirty."

And I would reply, "It's needed as
food by reptiles, by birds..."

Do you know how
people view politics?

That it's a bit like a fly.
That is, something dirty,

ugly, useless and expensive.

No. They think it's a privilege
reserved for the politicians.

Sure, but...

if those involved in politics would allow
themselves

to be eaten by the voters,
it would be very different.

It involves answering their questions,

to speak instead of remaining silent,

to bring up to the surface
what's at the bottom.

To explain... to explain everything!

Everything what?

What happens, what's all around.
And that which can't be seen.

It's difficult...

Anyone can do the easy part.

- Yes?
- Trevi?

- Oh, Captain, it's you.

I'm sorry for calling you
at home. Any news?

No, no news.

However, someone
was asking for you yesterday.

-Ester?
- Yes, Ester.

She needed to tell you something
very important regarding Tano Cariddi.

- OK. I'll call you back.
- Goodbye.

But do you love me?
Really love me?

Yes, I really love you.

Why?

Because you're a good person.

It's not true.
I'm not a good person.

I can't allow myself to be good.

Too many people
would want to see me ruined.

Well, you're good with me.
That's all I care about.

- Hello?
- Ester, it's Corrado.

No, we haven't called any taxis.

Listen, I'll wait for you at the
Porta Ticinese Cafe' at whatever time.

Of course I'm sure.

Who was it?

It was a wrong number.

I feel like making love.

Don't you want me to accompany
you to the airport?

No. Stay on my wife's tail.

Follow her. I want to know
where she goes, what she does...

I want to know everything.

Have a good trip. The keys, sir.

I can't come with you.
You need to go on your own.

- Is everyone present?
- Everyone.

The Mafia's management
is all present.

The top managers of the Mafia.

I can't see you.

You mustn't see us.
All you have to do is talk.

At the moment, there are
550 nuclear plants in the world.

Every plant operates
for around 25 years

after which it is destroyed.

At that point it has accumulated
an enormous amount

of radioactive waste

and in itself is
also an enormous waste.

It needs to be decommissioned,
stored, guarded, decontaminated

or perhaps reutilized in another way.
Thus obtaining a double gain.

At the moment, 17 nuclear
reactors are already out of use.

In less than three years,
another 150 will be out of use

while others will be
built on and on, forever.

Somewhere in Europe,

a train with the first 500 tons
of radioactive material

is awaiting your decision.

You have three days
to say either yes or no.

Three days to decide
whether to move with the times

and plan your wealth and your power

or to remain anchored to the

old feudal mentality
upheld by the Godfather.

He is the past.

And because he refuses to cede the
island of Tirene, I have come to ask of

your illustrious association,
for whom I am investing

billions and billions of lire.

I have already negotiated it for you.

The other party is offering

a fixed percentage
valued at 400 billion lire per year.

I was born not very far from here,

in a village with houses
whitewashed with lime on the outside

but black with poverty on the inside.

The parish priest used to say
that I was intelligent

and so he convinced my parents to

send me up north
to a boarding school.

But there was always the
risk of having to return here.

I had only one way to save myself...

...to win the only scholarship
offered by the school each year.

And I always won it!

When my parents died,
I was in England at university,

and I didn't want to return.

They were dead. I could no
longer do anything for them.

In the meantime I was
looking after my own interests.

I would study night and day.

I never had any friends.
I never had any company.

When I returned,
an old banker, Nicola Antinari,

offered me the chance to soar up high.

I was like a bird
born in the cellar of a cathedral

that was flying up towards the light.

Because cathedrals
are beautiful but dark

and you need to make a hole
in the dome to see the sun.

This is why I'm here today.

Remember, only three days.

Here.

I copied these from his notebook.

There are incomprehensible
numbers and letters in a strange order.

I believe they are important.

They're coded.
I have no idea what they mean.

I'll bring it to Trevi. Perhaps
he'll manage to make sense of it.

Thank you.

But I don't want you to
remain alone in that house.

What you're doing is dangerous.

You have no idea what he has
in mind. Nobody knows anything.

- Only I can...
- Listen, you can't go on pretending!

You need to get away, do you
understand? Run away from there!

Haven't you understood yet?

I don't want to go away.
I want to stay with him,

until the moment
I will have destroyed him.

I won't let you out of here...
if you don't promise me that...

No... no.
You can't do it on your own.

He's now too powerful, too clever,
too cunning even for you.

However... he has a weak spot.

He's in love with me.

He needs me.

Ester...

...here.

Take it.

I'll feel more at ease.

At the moment
I'm staying at Trevi's place.

We'll see each other again soon.

Think of me every now and then.

Goodbye.

- Good morning...
- Marzio, what are you doing here?

Get in, madam.

No, thank you.
I have my car parked on the...

I know where your car is

and I also know where
the Captain's car is. Get in.

It's in your best interest.

Come in.

Make yourself comfortable, come.

- Come in.
- What do you want from me?

Sit down, please.
Would you like something to drink?

How's Inspector Cattani?
Is he well?

You know, I didn't want
to believe it. Really, I swear it.

Mr. Cariddi had his suspicions.

He told me to follow you
but I really didn't want to believe it.

I can give you a lot of money
if you keep quiet. OK?

Oh, I'll keep quiet...

Who's going to talk? That's why
I've asked you to come here...

to strike up a little deal.

Will 50 million lire be enough?

- Almost.
- 1007 Will that be enough?

Almost. Plus a small percentage on
that thing that you give to your friend.

Why don't we do this,
every time that you see him

and perhaps
I'll even accompany you...

afterwards you'll see me too, here.

OK?

Hey! What are you doing?
Are you saying no?

So you want to force
me to tell everything?

Just think how Mr. Cariddi will feel

when he finds out who
you're meeting up with?

- Stay away! Don't touch me!
- Who's touching you?

- Don't come near me you pig!
- OK, I understand.

You're hard to please, OK.

Friends like before. As long as you...

- Don't move.
- ...put it away.

I was joking. You slut! You say
yes to the other guy and not to me!

What's wrong with me?

Oh God! No!

So, can you understand any of this?

I've already
discarded 3,500 combinations.

- How many are there in total?
- One million.

- That's going well!
- Indeed.

We'll break the code. We'll find it!

Yes? Yes, he's here. Who's speaking?

I'll put him on.

Captain, it's for you. It's Ester.

Yes?

Don't go anywhere.

No, no, don't move from
where you are. We'll come to get you.

Sorry, but this is the last one.
We need to close.

Excuse me. Police.
Get out. You too, please.

Tell me everything.

So, how did it happen?

He wanted me.

He touched me.

Everyone wants me except you.

Why have you been drinking?
Answer me!

Just a little...

Come.

No, Corrado!

What are you doing? Stop it.

Where did it happen? How long ago?

- I don't know... some time ago.
- Did anybody see you go in?

- Have you come to arrest me?
- No, I haven't come to arrest you

but I don't know what to do.

I didn't do it on purpose.

The gun went off by itself.
I didn't want to kill him.

Where's the gun?
Where did you put it?

I left it there.

Come on, let's go.

Thank you.

- Good evening, sir.
- Good evening.

They're already here! Go, go!

- I'm Inspector Renzi.
- Oh, pleased to meet you.

Come.

He was shot with this.

There are many fingerprints
on the butt but they're not clear.

The man's name is Marzio Alimenti.

He's the driver for the banker,
Gaetano Cariddi.

Is the information
I've been given true?

Yes. This is a gun from the
police force. We're equipped with it.

We had the number checked out.

It belongs to Captain Cattani.

Keep this information
to yourself, Inspector.

I don't want the newspapers
to know anything for the moment.

I'll issue an arrest for Cattani.

But, in the meantime we'll
go ahead with the investigation.

And now, let us go to Cattani's home.

Sit down wherever you like.

I'll get you some water.

Here.

Are you now going to
report me to the authorities?

Don't talk nonsense.

Now, listen to me.
You'll now go straight home.

The police mustn't suspect
anything... and not even Tano.

What if they discover
that the gun is yours?

They'll blame me.

It's of no importance.
I'll stay here for a little while...

enough time to shove
Tano up against the wall.

Then I will testify in your favor.

I will say that it was a
legitimate act of self defense.

Look! Come here!
Come and have a look!

- It has found them!
- What has it found?

It's printing them. It has found them.

It has decoded those numbers.

Hamburg, Malinveux, Amstelgarten,
Rougement, Flickert, Banville, Naples.

- What is this?
- I don't know...

Well, these are more comprehensible.

They are names
and telephone numbers.

- Canopio, Santelia, Salimbeni,
- This is crazy!

Espinosa...

These are the people
that are being investigated.

Espinosa. I know this name.

But I don't remember
where I've heard it.

- Here you go.
- Thank you.

It looks like Cattani has not
been here for a number of days.

Yes, it appears that way also to me.
However, carry out a thorough search.

Do you really think that
Corrado killed that man?

No, no, I don't believe anything.
I'll limit myself only to speculation.

His gun was there.
He has disappeared from his home

and nobody knows where he is.

Even you're telling me that you
have no idea where he's ended up.

On the other hand, the Captain
has been acting impulsively lately.

Do you understand what I'm saying?

I wouldn't want him to be
out seeking justice on his own.

No, I don't think so.

Well, anyway, if for
any reason you hear from him,

convince him to turn himself in.

- What's happening?
- A tragedy. They found Marzio dead.

- The police are in the house.
- I've noticed.

Excuse me but I'm
arriving now from the airport.

We were compelled
to disturb your wife

but last night we
found your driver's body.

He was killed by a gunshot.

But... how did it happen?

Unfortunately, we
don't even have a witness.

After hearing the shot, the
neighbors forced the door open.

But the killer had already fled.

Do you have any idea...
well, I don't know...

any threats from an enemy?

No. I'm not on familiar
terms with the domestic staff.

Do you mind if we ask
some personal questions?

Come in, make yourself comfortable.

Ester, wait.

Who could it have been?

I don't know. I didn't know him well.

I left him here on purpose
so that he would accompany you.

Had he done that
he'd still be alive now.

Why did you go out alone?

I don't like going out with a driver.

Did you go out for some shopping?

Yes.

And you bought
some beautiful things?

No, no... I decided
not to buy anything.

Sorry, but I have to go.

I'm Councilor Bini.
Please let me come in.

But... shouldn't you be in prison?

I was released on bail this morning.

Listen, Senator, when I left home
a couple of hours ago,

they were tailing me.

I think I managed to lose them
but if that's not the case,

you'd better not leave
me outside the door.

Come in.

Who are you talking about?

I'm talking about those people
who want to kill me and my family...

but not right away, of course.

In a little while after people
have forgotten about me

and the news would
send less shock waves.

I only hope that at that
point I'm no longer here.

Does that mean you have no
intention of showing up at the trial?

Well, you haven't understood then!

If I don't leave Italy, they won't
let me show up alive at the trial!

Who wants to kill you?

This is for you. In here there
is proof of years of corruption

in our municipality here in Roviate

and in Rome, in Parliament.

You can guess who I'm talking about...

- Who?
- Senator Salimbeni.

Here...

...contracts, invoices, checks,
blackmail, embezzlement.

This is everything I would have
liked to give to that poor Captain.

So... so then...

Everything he'd come to denounce
at the Commission was true.

I, on the other hand, betrayed him.

I'd promised him that
I would speak up, but instead...

But you know,
when they put a knife here...

and they tell you they'll do
the same to your wife and daughter,

- your courage leaves you.
- Why have you come here now?

Why to me?

Because you were the only
person that voted in favor of it.

But you told me that you are
getting ready to flee, to leave Italy.

Unfortunately, I'm not a hero.

I'm just an ordinary person,
like many others, and I'm afraid.

I hope you're not like me.

It's frightening...

I would like to be put through to
Senator Salimbeni's office, please.

I need to make an appointment
with Senator Salimbeni. It's Mr. Conti.

What? He's in Milan?

Can you tell me where?
Just a moment.

Yes.

Thank you.

Look at this phonogram.
It's just arrived.

Calm down.
I've got low blood pressure right now.

- Read it.
- I need tranquility

in the morning.

- Come on, read it!
- What's wrong?

Have you got ants in your pants?

A warrant for Cattani's arrest?
Are they mad? Murder?

Hello? It's Quadri here.

It was Trevi.

Well here, now
you know everything.

Obviously, each of you
can leave the room,

go to the nearest police station
and denounce Ester.

Or you can arrest me. You are
police officers. You can do that.

On the other hand, if you
believe what I've just told you,

then perhaps together we
can get through all of this.

Captain, perhaps we could
talk to Falisci about it.

No.

Something doesn't add up
at the District Attorney's office.

The others always
know our movements.

They knew about Frolo and they
knew about the transfer to the clinic.

I'm certain there's a snitch
in the District Attorney's office.

And then, the
District Attorney is too cautious.

This time we'll do it our way!
And this is why I wanted you all here.

What do you mean, our way?

We need to do three things.
First, we need to go to Tindari's home

and find as much as
possible on Loretta De Pisis.

Second, we need to go to the District
Attorney's office. We have to get our

hands on the documents that
were seized at the casino

and which are listed on
Mr. Tindari's current accounts.

Thirdly, Senator Salimbeni.
We need to know what he's doing,

how he does things
and whom he meets.

For example, the newspapers are
saying that since this morning he's

here in Milan for the
opening of a retirement home.

Someone needs to start
following him... and quickly.

-I'm on it.
- Good.

I get it, just for a change
I get the worst job. OK.

I'll go through the files at
the District Attorney's office.

Oh please, stop.

Let's go.

And like everything that concerns man,

old age has an existential dimension.

It changes the
relationship with oneself...

In other words, if biological aging

is a factor that can't be
conditioned by history or society

then destiny and
one's personal situation

are the factors that can be acted upon.

What would happen to
a tree without roots? Nothing.

What would
the present be without the past?

Without those
who came before us? Nothing.

That's why a civilized
society worthy of this name

must protect, listen and look after
its old people from the ravages of time

and from the terrible epidemic
of the younger generations called

indifference.

Well then, we are not indifferent.
We are here beside you.

And this new retirement village
is proof of that. Enjoy it. It's yours.

Good bye, dear people.
I care about you.

Excuse me. Senator Conti
is insisting to speak to you.

Where is he?

- Out here.
- Did he say what he wants?

No.

Excuse me but I need to be alone.
Let him through.

Come in. Please sit down.

You know, Professor,
you are the last person

I would've expected to meet here.

Do you mind if I call you
Professor or do you prefer Senator?

Professor is fine. That way we
avoid confusion. You are the senator.

I'm pleased you've come to visit me.

You must know that out of principal,
I don't hold any resentment

towards anyone.

I was told that you had voted against
me when my name was brought up

at the Commission.

Well, OK, that was your right.

We are a
democratic country, aren't we?

But don't go and tell
those old people out there.

They adore me and
they wouldn't take it too well.

I imagine that around here they're
not the only ones who are fond of you.

Ah, not to be boastful, but
on this board at every election,

I obtain nearly 58% of votes.

And you naturally return the favor.

Don't be tactless, Professor.

I don't reciprocate anything.

This retirement village
is a deserved public service.

So why then did you
come to inaugurate it?

Listen to me...

So that you get 68% of the
votes at the next election?

You've come here to
provoke me, haven't you?

No, no... only to
offer you some advice.

To request that you
resign from your position

so that the court can
openly investigate you

and your friends on the casino matter.

Do as I say. It's your last opportunity
to be of good service to the country.

Or based on
some hew documentation,

I'll have the
Commission investigate you.

- What documentation?
- You'll find out at the right time.

I'll wait until tomorrow.

If I haven't received your
letter of resignation before 8:00 p.m.,

I will report you to the Commission.

Satisfy my curiosity...
why are you out to get me?

I'm ashamed to sit in the
same hall of parliament with you.

I'm ashamed for myself and
for all those people you represent

in an unworthy manner.

Resign. It will be the only
honorable thing you've ever done!

You go upstairs.

Look here, Inspector, at this
checkbook. Look at this stub.

L D P... Loretta De Pisis.
Yes, perhaps this time we've got it.

I don't know what else to do.
I don't know where to look for him.

I was hoping he'd be here.

What could possibly
have happened to him?

Nothing. What do you think
could have happened? He's like that.

He's always in a hurry...
always with some problem...

This time he's being accused
of having killed an unarmed man.

I don't believe it. He'd never do it.

Corrado is someone that even
when he's unpleasant, ill-tempered...

is always good inside.

You see, every now and then people
come here to donate some clothes,

to buy a little statue,

to caress the children just so
they can feel like good people.

Life for these people
is like a piggy bank.

Every now and then, they
insert a coin in the hopes of

one day finding themselves in Heaven.

Corrado isn't like that.

When he's among the children,

he looks at them like
they are all his siblings.

Not foster brothers but brothers
in sorrow. You're like that too.

Oh no. I'm not strong like him.

Do you love him?

Apart from you and me,
he only has three friends:

Quadri, Giugni and Trevi.

And he's definitely
staying with one of them.

Here's the file that Giugni took
from the District Attorney's office.

And these are his bank statements.

Get the checkbook that
we found at Tindari's place.

I'm going to check
Tindari's bank statement.

You tell me the check numbers
with the initials Loretta De Pisis.

Here are two checks. The
first one's number is: 304459503.

Don't come in for a while.
I'm starting to print.

Here... here it is. 304459503.

Yes, perfect!

Let's see if the other one is here.

- Its number is 4579921043.
- It must be one of the last ones.

What did you say? 4577

-9921043.
- 99210437

- Exactly.
- It's from a couple of months ago.

- The amount is for three million lire.
- Who's it made out to?

To the "Overseas
Klammerburg School."

Tindari has made
a payment every month for years.

Loretta's school.
That's where he's hidden her,

that's where we need
to go to look for her.

In Switzerland?

Please, open up. I know you're there.

Corrado, it's me. Open up.

Thank God you're well.

Why haven't you called me? Why have
you disappeared without calling me?

- You're so pale.
- Tell me what happened.

Why did they find
your gun near that man?

Who told you?

Falisci.

Why didn't that get out
to the newspapers?

He wants to find you
without too much fuss,

because he thinks you're innocent.
He's not wrong, is he?

No, no

- but I can't tell you who did it.
- Why?

Because... because
I made a promise.

- You no longer trust me?
- I told you not to come looking for me.

Why did you come?

- I thought you were hurt, maybe dead.
- And now that you've found me,

what are you thinking of doing?

You need to go to Falisci
and tell him everything.

No, no, I'm not going anywhere

and I'm not telling
anyone anything.

You can't do it alone!
How do you think...

Silvia, don't tell me
what I have to do.

I beg you.
Try to understand me.

No, I don't understand you.
I don't understand you anymore.

"Proposal for the re-opening
of the investigation”

"on Senator Ettore Salimbeni.”

So do I need to go?

Please Silvia,
it's already so difficult.

I never thought that
anything was easy.

Corrado, when it's all over,
would you like to live with with me?

Every day of every year
of every century?

I can't find the sugar.

Answer me.
Don't change the subject.

I can't imagine my future.

Would you want it with me?

Yes.

Yes, I would like it.

Men can never find anything.
Here's the sugar.

This one, isn't he your husband?

Ernesto!

This photo was taken yesterday.

What's he doing there
with Salimbeni?

I don't know. I don't understand.
I need to go him.

- No... wait!
- I need to go.

I'll come with you. Wait for me!

Stop!

What does this mean?

No, wait! Silvia, wait!

- Don't go in!
- No! No!

Use the phone!
Call the ambulance! Do as I say!

He's dead.

Silvia, I have to go now.
You understand that, don't you?

If they find me here they'll arrest me.

Why?

What did you want to do on your own?

Didn't you know what the world is like?

Corrado! What is it?

- Are you on your own?
- Yes.

I couldn't get here any earlier.

What's happened? What's wrong?

They've killed Silvia's husband.

- Oh God...
- I don't know what to do any more.

I can't stop them any more.

They've won.

It's not like that, Corrado.

Enough.

What is your God doing?

He just stays there and looks?

Why does he allow such things to
happen? Why doesn't he do anything?

Who are you to judge God, eh?

What right do you have to give up?

I can't do it any more.
I just can no longer do it.

Dear Silvia,

I am writing to let you know
that I've decided to ask for the

re-opening of the Salimbeni case.

I know you won't agree with that.

You'll ask me to be cautious
and to not expose myself.

But life, with a
strange stroke of fortune,

has reserved for me
this splendid surprise.

Something that I
wouldn't have expected

and that I perhaps didn't deserve.

It has saved for me the chance
to do something for our country.

For those who cannot,
for those who don't know.

Think of me, a mere university lecturer

who up until now
only knew about ants.

These ancient and unique beings
who don't retreat for anyone.

I will do the same,

because I am now convinced
that my entire life's studies

have been none other than
the preparation for this moment.

Mrs. Conti. We've heard.
I'm very sorry.

Leave us alone.

- Would you like to sit down?
- No. I want that investigation.

What's wrong?
Don't you trust me any more?

I'm personally taking care of it.
You wouldn't be able to right now.

That investigation is mine.
You have to give it back to me.

And this time
if they want to stop me,

they'll have to murder me like Ernesto.

I'll be cunning and wicked like them

and even more so.

This investigation belongs to me!

Do you know where
Captain Cattani is hiding?

He's being accused of murder.

Whoever covers for him
is breaking the law.

I'm here for my investigation
and not to discuss Captain Cattani.

Agreed.

Yes, you're right.

The investigation is yours.

Please take it back.

The Mafia's families have said "yes."
You may begin the operation.

Your final cash payment
has been credited to you.

You can tell Espinosa
that the train can arrive.

Everything is ready.

If it leaves tonight, in a couple of days
we'll board it in Naples.

Then we'll unload those
500 tons of shit on the island

and everything is complete.

And the Puppeteer?

That's a family matter.
I'll take care of that.

Anyway... he's no longer a part
of the Mafia families' leadership.

- Does he know?
- Not yet. I'm leaving for Sicily now.

- I'll tell him tonight.
- Who's taking his place?

Can't you guess? You'd be nothing
without me, wouldn't you?

True.

Barbarossa will be taking my place
here in Milan. He's in the other car.

The Mafia families
have made this decision.

They don't feel comfortable
leaving you on your own.

Whatever you need,
he's here with eight men.

And smile for once.
You're about to buy Italy!

As you can see,
we have acquired 14% of

the International Insurance Securities.

It's more than anyone has ever owned.
It means that we've worked well.

It means that my suggestion regarding
the timing to buy was right.

Therefore, now...

in two days' time,
I want you to acquire the

the controlling share of the
International Insurance Securities.

We need to obtain at least 30%.

In other words, I want to rake up all the
Barton and Setts shares by that date.

How shall we do that? I don't think
they have any intention of selling.

Speed and liquidity
will be our weapons.

At 10:00 a.m., you will
begin selling our shares from the

International Insurance Securities.

Most likely, prices
will start to fall quickly.

Don't worry. Sell them anyway.

- Until what price?
- Until the value of the stocks has

been halved.

Until it gives the impression it's
crashing. Then when the chaos begins

the small shareholders will be panic
stricken and the Barton and Setts

companies, already in a cash flow
crisis, will be on the verge of collapse!

How do you know that
they're in a liquidity crisis?

I know.

Like I know that the majority partners

will be unable to counter this attack
without first having to call a

board meeting.

At that point, it will be too late

because you will begin to
buy again as quickly as possible

and the shares will start to rise again.

The small shareholders will be the
first to fall and they'll sell in blocks.

It will be roughly 11 :30 in the morning.

The stock market will
literally have gone mad.

Nobody will understand anything.

When the shares
have doubled in value,

even the Barton and Setts
companies' shares will cede.

From that moment onwards,
buy everything until the closure.

It will cost at least 3,000 billion lire.

Exactly.

However, by 2:00 in the afternoon,
The Antinari Bank

will own a fortune
valued at three trillion lire

and in the days that follow,
the capital will continue to increase.

I'll direct all operations from here.
I don't need any of you.

I want you all out in the field.

That is all.

Thank you gentlemen, and good luck.

So it's for the day after tomorrow.
Yes, tell them they can start moving.

My compliments, Senator.
I foresee that soon

there'll soon be wonderful
outcomes in your political career.

Did you get Loretta's
school address?

Yes. Klammerburg is near Zurich.

We'll arrive in the morning.

Does she know that her father is,
or rather that the one she believes is

her father is dead?

- I don't know.
- Why didn't he give her his

surname when he adopted her?

Why didn't they
call her Loretta Tindari?

Why don't you think about
driving and keeping quiet?

- How far is it from here to the border?
- Not far.

What if they catch us?

You'll say that you've just caught me
and that you are taking me to the

nearest police station.

- What if they don't believe us?
- If they don't believe us,

you'll spend five years in prison.

Ah, great... I just wanted to know.

Look, Inspector, Loretta has been
in our boarding school for years

but her father, Mr. De Pisis,
has never come here.

Come here, Loretta.

Come now, these gentlemen
are from the Italian police.

They need to speak to you.

Please make yourselves
comfortable in my office.

What's happened?

Listen, Loretta, we've
come here to tell you that...

Look, it's not easy.

Has something happened
to my father? Is he not well?

Yes. Unfortunately, some time
ago, a tragedy occurred to your father.

Some time ago?

I spoke to him last night
on the phone and he was fine.

You heard from your father last night?

Yes, of course. Like every night.

Well, would you mind
telling me what's going on?

Excuse me a moment. Have you
ever heard the name Tindari before?

Do you know him?
Have you ever seen him?

No, never.

You need to come with us to Milan

and we'll explain
everything to you there.

Are you ready?

Have you understood everything?

Here is 25 million lire.

That way you can buy
all the pigs you want. Happy?

Come on, let's go.

So, you also
want to go to America, huh?

Well, go, if that's what you desire.

I understand you.

Life here has
become difficult for everyone.

Open the window.

Tonight in the breeze,
there's the scent of oranges.

How will you cope without it
in America, Santuzzo?

I don't want to see him.

Take him away.

They're from the police.

There's also an inspector.
His name is Cattani.

No, they don't want
to tell me anything.

But they want you to come
to a place called Villa Celeste

as soon as possible.

Yes, OK, Daddy. Goodbye.

Well?

I told him that you want to speak
to him about something important

and he said OK.

Did you explain to him
where he needs to go?

Yes, but I just don't understand
anything anymore.

Take her to the car. I won't be long.

Corrado...

Where are you?

Yes, I understand. OK.

OK.

Here, have a drink. It'll do you good.

I don't want anything.
Go away! Go away!

You told me that you would
explain things to me but instead,

nobody is speaking up,
nobody is saying anything.

I hate you!

We found the girl in a
Swiss boarding school.

She's been there several years
and Tindari regularly paid the fees.

This is what lead me astray.

Yes, I went there convinced that
Mr. Tindari, after having adopted her,

pretended to be her father.

And instead, her adoptive
father is someone else.

- Who is it?
- I don't know.

However, he'll be here in a few hours.

This is the last time
I'm listening to you.

I've got the investigation back.
I can no longer follow you.

I will denounce the person
who walks through that gate

and take him to court.

That's enough now.
Your personal war is over.

- Will you also arrest me?
- Yes.

For your own good.

When?

Tomorrow.

There's still time for tomorrow.
