Wealthy widow Rosemary Tennant is found dead in the gutter outside the 'temple' of her 'psychic guide' Kristina Frye, a despicable fraud in Jane's eyes. Rosemary lived with her children Clara and Travis Tennant, a troubled teenager missing for 10 days, and philander photographer Jeremy Hale. She was about to change her will, presumably disinheriting Travis 'to shake him up', but in favor of which outsider? Patrick dissects all relationships and sets a double-bottomed trap.
