-Jyoti? Where are you guys?

[Jyoti] Right above you.

[whirring]

Now, rain time.

So where's the water in this cloud?

Actually, Jyoti,
water isn't inside the clouds,

it isthe clouds.

According to my research,
clouds are made of tiny water droplets.

So how do we make it rain, then?

Maybe we need to take a closer peek
at these water droplets.

A delightfully drippy idea, Keesha.
Let's be what we see.

-[Frizzle] Enjoy the droplets, kids.
-[all] Whoa!

Whoa! Did it get windier up here?

According to my calculations,

the wind's the same,
but we're a lot lighter.

Look what else is getting tossed around.

These must be droplets
that make up the cloud.

Yep. They're water, all right.
But where does it come from?

Hello. Remember when Jyoti made
that three-in-one Gizmo that Goes?

Yes. She used the three states of matter.

-Ice when it's a solid.
-Water when it's a liquid.

And water vapor when it's a gas.
Which condenses when it cools again.

And turns back to a liquid.

And a water droplet is born.

But they're not falling to the ground.

Then let's grab droplets and throw them
down to the park. Come on.

-[wind howling]

[Carlos grunts]

Frustrating. The air currents keep blowing
the droplets back up again.

Is this why clouds float?

The droplets are too light to fall
through the air currents?

Which means raindrops have to be
heavy enough to get through them.

Delightful deduction, Jyoti.
Bus, if you please.

[horn honks, beeps]

[Frizzle] See? It takes a million droplets

Man, even at full size,
it's windy up here.

[Arnold] And cold!

Speak for yourselves.
I am so getting the hang of... agh!

Hi there, high-spirited high-flyers.

High altitude means
we're closer to space than to Earth.

It also means high winds
and low temperatures.

I'll "brr-rr" to that.

While we're here,
I'd like you to meet a formation friend

unique to high altitudes. A cirrus cloud.

So delicate and wispy and white.

According to my research,
cirrus means "hair" in Latin.

Makes sense. Look!

Intriguing. But as long as it makes rain,
I don't care what language it's in.

We'd better have a closer look
at these droplets.

-Uh-oh. That means...
-[remote beeps]

Shrinking. Oh, man!
My underwear's never the right size after.

Revelation!
The water droplets in this cloud

aren't water droplets. They're ice!

And they're as tiny as the droplets
in the other cloud.

And too light to fall, too.

So cirrus clouds can't make rain either?

Disappointing. Cirrus-ly.

-[all] Carlos!
-[chuckles]

Well, then, let's find some more clouds.

[remote beeps]

Hi, kids. Did you have an "ice" time?

And I bet Ms. Frizzle won't mind
if we bring back one extra cloud.

[beeps, whirrs]

[chugging]

A curious cloud.
Thin and foggy, in layers.

Like cozy, comforting sheets.

Yeah. It might look cozy.
It's a little too damp for naps, though.

Been there, done that, got wet.

[DA laughs] It's called cirrostratus.
"Cirro" because...

[Tim] Let me guess.

Because it looks
like the wispy cirrus clouds.

-And I bet "stratus" means layers.
-Yep.

[monitor beeping]

And it's made of tiny ice particles, too.
So cirrostratus clouds don't rain, either.

Ugh, disappointing. Now what do we do?

[Ralphie]
Jyoti, check out these bad boys.

Don't feel bad, cirrostratus.
They may not appreciate you, but I do.

You can come home with me, too.

-[switch beeps]
-[whirring]

This cloud's totally different.
It's made of little heaps.

-[beeps]
-A cirrocumulus cloud.

"Cumulus" is Latin for heap or pile.

So that means at the end of my bed,

-I've got a "cumulus" of dirty socks.
-[all chuckle]

Wow. So if the last one looks
like a cozy sheet,

this one's like a cushy, wet comforter.

[monitor beeping]

But the particles are small and icy.
So no rain.

I'm seeing a pattern here.
Maybe high-altitude clouds don't rain.

Perceptive! I proudly present
the Pattern Pinpointer Prize.

Then we'd better check some clouds
lower down. And fast!

Hey, that's middle altitude.
I'll see you there.

Well, I'm gonna take one of you
cushy beauties home.

-[switch beeps]
-[whirring]

10,000 feet. Three and a half times higher
than the world's tallest building.

It's warmer here.

[grunts] And the clouds look thicker.

And grayer. Hopefully that means rainier.

This fluffy one looks more promising
than those wispy-thin cirrus ones.

[monitor beeping]

Altocumulus. They're darker
because they hold more moisture.

Which is what I need.
Altocumulus, don't fail me now.

The water droplets are liquid, and bigger.

But still so tiny.

[Professor humming]

[phone ringing]

Professor Frizzle,
PhDeveloping a new skill set.

[kid] Hi! About the clouds episode,

wouldn't a cloud fall apart
if a bus pulled it?

[Professor] If you've ever
walked around on a foggy day,

you know how airy a cloud is,

because fog is just a cloud
at ground level.

So you're right, you couldn't tow a cloud
any more than you could tow fog.

-[kid] So that part was magic.
-[Professor] Yep. That's how we roll.

[kid]
What makes clouds stick together?

Why don't the droplets spread out
in the air?

[Professor] Clouds form
because there's something different

about the air in the cloud
from the air around it.

Maybe less dense
or a different temperature,

so the cloud sticks together.

But sometimes edges of clouds aren't clear
where the cloud mixes with regular air.

And some, like stratus clouds,
actually do spread out a lot.

[kid] Cool. Last question:
how do I know if rain's on the way?

Like this... gray, dark clouds
hold more water,

so they're more likely to rain.

And when clouds pile high
into a massive cloud mountain,

a thunder-storming cumulonimbus
may be forming.

Time to get inside.

[kid] What's the next episode about?

I'd love to tell you,
but I've got to catch a friend

who's swinging by,
and I don't want to miss them. Hep!
