The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (1955–1961): Season 4, Episode 3 - The Bounty Killer - full transcript

A string of ambush murders in the Robber's Roost area forces Col. Benteen at Fort Lewis, Colorado to ask Earp for help. With Apaches threatening, he can't afford the time or men to investigate. He has received a letter from Elzie Rash asking for help so Earp starts there. After his wife reads a letter of introduction from Benteen, Rash trusts Earp. Earp noticed a man eying the Rash ranch when he arrived so he and Elzie leave to track him. After a few shots are traded, Elzie and his horse are slightly wounded. He takes the horses back for fresh ones and treatment while Earp continues on foot. They find another victim in his house and Earp meets the posse on the man's trail made up of outlaw ranchers. Earp has them keep the killer out of the lowlands while he and Elzie catch up and trade shoots again with the killer. Earp and the killer are both wounded but the killer leaves behind his saddle bags and a book with a hint as to who hired him. Earp decides to visit the rancher suspected named Moyer who ignores Earp. A trap set by Mrs. Rush kills the actual killer. Earp now faces the question of whether the outlaw posse will follow his orders or do things their way.

As Wyatt Earp's fame as a peace officer in Dodge City

spread across the western country

men remembered that he was also a Deputy U.S. Marshal.

Thus, when his old friend Colonel Benteen

of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Louis, Colorado,

found himself facing the problem of a mysterious killer

who shot only from ambush,

Colonel Benteen could think of but one solution.

Now this is Robber's Roost

on what they call the Outlaw Trail in Utah.

All the killings have been done in this area here.

Washington's ordered me to arrest the man.

But the Apaches are threatening a breakout and I...

Well, I just can't spare a detail right now, Wyatt.

That's why I almost begged you to come out here.

Hmm.

I know what you're thinking.

All the victims have been outlaws or rustlers.

Yes, sir.

Well, the rustlers own small cattle spreads,

and they call themselves small ranchers.

That's what the War Department calls them.

Well, even a rustler shouldn't be bushwhacked.

I knew you'd see it that way.

Now if something isn't done, Washington will order me

to take a full cavalry troop on a wild goose chase.

The Apaches would like nothing better.

Well, you're right, Colonel.

Uh...you have any lead to the killer?

Just one. A fella named Elzy Rash.

He's chairman of the group who squawked to the department.

Is he a cattle thief?

Ah, they all are.

But Rash knows the country and he's offered to act as guide.

I think you can trust him.

Well, I owe you this, Colonel.

You don't really.

But I'm glad you think so.

Now this killer's crazy as a coot.

You'll be dealing with a madman so cunning,

he can terrorize tough outlaws.

Watch yourself.
