The Legend of Hanuman (2021–…): Season 1, Episode 10 - Indra's Curse - full transcript

Hanuman's team faces a devastating revelation that challenges their loyalties. Later, they encounter the strange Vaalakhilya and learn of their curse.

Ruma's husband, Sugreev,
made a grave oath to Ram,

that his men would find Princess Sita
within 30 days

or they would pay for their failure
with their lives

And now that time has run out

Out of the four generals
who searched for her,

only three returned

The first was General Shatabali,
who searched the north

He journeyed to the top of Mount Kaal

But Princess Sita was nowhere
to be found in the north

Mighty General Vinata went east

and faced the gargantuan serpent Ananta
and a sea of fire

But Princess Sita was nowhere
to be found in the east

Clever General Sushena went west

and told Sugreev of how he battled
winged lions at the peak of Mount Somagiri

And yet, Princess Sita was nowhere
to be found in the west

Sugreev was furious at their failure

It was the duty of Ruma, as wife and Queen
of Kishkindha, to calm her husband's rage

She reminded him
that one general still remained

That in Hanuman lay all their hope

Where are we?

This doesn't look right

What do you mean?

The stars
They're not in the right place

Oh, no!

It's not the stars, Jambhvan
It's us

Time passed while we were in the cave

How much time?

Based on the location of the stars,
I fear weeks have passed

Weeks? How is that possible?

We must have been in the cave
for that entire time

It must have been the illusions of the cave
when we first encountered Shurpanakha

So, the demoness had the last laugh
after all

What... What does that mean?

It means it's all over

Our time is up. We've failed

If we go back to Kishkindha, it's...

What do we do, Hanuman?

Welcome, King Sugreev

Would you like to share our meal?

No, Lord Ram... I...
I am afraid I come bearing bad news

Once again?

Patience, brother

King Sugreev is our guest

Please sit, my friend

As you know, the time
that we were supposed to find Princess Sita

has expired

And what have your men found?

What are you so afraid to tell us?

Three of my generals have returned...
empty-handed

They found no trace of Princess Sita
in the east, west or north

And now? Do you remember your oath?
How you would slay your vaanars?

My actions weigh heavily on my soul

Will they now pay the ultimate price
for your failure?

So, once again you break your word

You put your soldiers' lives on the line!
And now what? You wish mercy from us?

I don't ask for mercy
What I did to you was wrong

I lost myself in celebration
I forgot the debt I owed you

In my hubris and arrogance,
I put my men's lives on the line

They are not at fault. I am
I failed at being a good king

So please, Lord Ram,
punish me instead

As one king to another,

spare my men and let me die
in their place

Has Hanuman returned?

What?

Has Hanuman returned from the south?

No. We haven't received word
from him or Prince Angad since they left

Then you have not broken any oath

You promised us
that only when all your men returned

would their lives be forfeit

We shall wait

Go back to your kingdom
No one needs to die today

What if Hanuman returns
empty-handed as well?

Have faith, Lakshman

There is more to Hanuman
than any of us can imagine

And he will never give up
until he finds Sita

You seem lost, my friend

Jambhvan... I need to speak with you

I sensed as much

But not here

Where do you suppose they're off to?

Probably to discuss
how we're going to return to Kishkindha

We're not really going to return
to Kishkindha, are we?

Only if we're eager to die
at King Sugreev's hands

What is it, Hanuman?

Hanuman?

Hanuman!

Son...

Hanuman? Are you all right?

I'm not

Something's wrong with me, Jambhvan

Tell me

Let me show you instead

How am I doing this, Jambhvan?

When did this start?

Last night
I crushed a stone to dust in my hands

Did Shurpanakha do something to me?
Did the demon curse me?

What is it?

Can't you hear it? These sounds
in the air... The humming noises

Hanuman, listen to me
You must...

Enough!

That was Angad!

Hanuman, wait! We must talk

You are all vaanars of Kishkindha!
Born and bred to be our strongest warriors!

And yet you sit here like cowards,
questioning your leaders!

What else can be done, Prince Angad?

We've failed to find Princess Sita
Only death awaits us in Kishkindha

Hanuman has led us to our doom!

Watch what you say about Hanuman!

He could have left me to die,
and yet he saved my life

If you want to be angry at anyone,
be angry at me

If it weren't for me,
we would never have entered Rikshabila

Maybe we would have found Princess Sita
in time, too

I owe you all my life
You stood by me and now it has cost you

Which is why I shall not stand by
and allow any of you to die!

Angad?

No, Hanuman. You fought for me,
so now let me fight for you

What's going on?

Our quest has failed

We do not know where Princess Sita is
or how to find her

Returning home
would mean death for everyone

And so, we should not return

We must make a new home!
Start over! What say you?

Praise Angad! Hail Angad!
We won't return! We won't go back!

And you, Hanuman?
What say you, my brother?

I say this is madness

You are too tied
by your loyalty to Ram

You have lost sight
that this quest is lost

We can't just abandon our mission

There is more at stake here
than just our lives, Angad

Look at the evils we have seen
since we left home

The evil Ravan has unleashed!

Finding Princess Sita
may be the only chance we have

to help Ram
destroy this darkness forever!

If we stray from our path, our dharm,

then we are allowing the world
to be consumed by the rakshasas!

We will be worse than cowards!

At least cowards live to see another day
We'd live to be with our families

And could you live without honour?

Could you stomach that shame
every time you meet your family's eyes?

Even if we were to continue, we don't
know how to even find Princess Sita

Why allow so many vaanars to die
for the cause of one human?

Prince Ram would not give up
on a life. Any life, so neither shall I

We are vaanars of Kishkindha!
Kishkindha is our home and nowhere else!

It is up to you to decide
I shall not force you

But if you choose to lay down
and give up,

then you may escape from Lakshman's arrows,
but can you run away from yourself?

You did the right thing, my friend

Why must Angad always oppose me,
Jambhvan?

His heart is in the right place,
even though his mind is not

Do you... do you hear that?

That... I do hear

What is this?

It cannot be
I thought they were merely legends

A legend that can smell you
from a mile away, you stinky old bear!

What are you creatures?

They are the Vila...

Quiet, you walking rug!
We can tell our own story

You are looking at the Vaalakhilya

Powerful and venerable sages
and esteemed devotees of the gods!

Now, who are you, monkey?

I am Hanuman of the vaanars
This is Jambhvan

My brothers,
perhaps we have been stuck here so long

that this era has been taken over
by monkeys

No, our home is in Kishkindha
We've journeyed far on a mission

You, however, seem trapped here...
How did this happen?

The tale of how we ended up here

must surely be told
across this world in song!

It isn't. No one else has heard of you

An injustice! Wrinkled old bear!

Sit then and hear the song of legend!

Make yourselves comfortable,
it will take a few days to hear the telling

We don't have that kind of time
Let's go, Hanuman

Okay! I can shorten our story
It'll only take a few minutes

Wait! Hold on!
Don't go! Come back!

Please, it has been
so long since we saw anybody else

Very well
But please, we don't have much time

Hanuman? Jambhvan?

I'm sorry, Hanuman, but I've made up my mind
I cannot let you just throw away your life...

What in the world?

Another listener! Good!
The more the merrier

What's going on?

Just sit down and listen

Maybe you'll learn something

Ages ago, Saptarishi Kashyap,

one of the most powerful sages
in the universe, performed a great ritual

All creatures on Earth
were asked to bring something

to contribute to the great ritual

Even we, the mighty Vaalakhilya,

protectors of all life on Earth
from the burning sun,

brought what we could carry
on our backs to gift the great sage

But the great God Indra
found the sight of us amusing

He laughed at us!

We Vaalakhilya might be small,
but our pride is as vast as the ocean

And so, with our collective might,
we cursed Indra,

but then he too cursed us
to return the favour

We were trapped within this tree,
cursed to be scorched

by the heat of the sun
day after day,

until a great being came to shade us
from the blistering noon-day sun,

which scorches us for our hubris
in cursing a god

It has done so for endless years

We prayed, and the great vulture Jatayu
would come to shield us with his mighty wings

Oh, no

What does the young monkey mean by that?

He... Jatayu is dead, great sage

I bet there are juicy berries
at the top, Nil

Don't remind me, Nal

Remember the berry tree
Mother planted in our yard?

What was that?

If Jatayu is no more,
then there is no hope

And now, once again, the sun
will shine its curse upon us

You best leave. The heat will
be unbearable. We're stuck here anyway

Come, Hanuman. It is their destiny
to face this curse. We should go

I will protect you from the sun

What? Why do you keep trying
to throw your life away?

Spending your life protecting and saving
others is not throwing it away, Angad

That is the lesson Prince Ram taught me

I will find Princess Sita,
and I will save these sages

I will save everyone I can

Why won't he listen to reason?

Because he tends to listen
to his heart

Who knew monkeys could be this brave?

Jambhvan, am I seeing things or is he...
growing?

A trick of the light perhaps?

Yes, it has to be, but...

Monkey, you are no ordinary monkey,
are you?

Hanuman, are you all right?

I'll be fine, Angad

Great sages, how do you fare?

The curse is finally broken!

Jambhvan, look!

You have helped free us, monkey...
Hanuman. We can never truly repay you

I simply performed my duty, great sage

You better listen, or I'll curse you!

Rarely does the Earth see a creature
so devoted to their principles as you

We Vaalakhilya will not forget you
We will sing songs of your praise

That is not necessary, great sage

Instead, sing songs in memory
of the great vulture Jatayu

If he had not been mercilessly killed
by the demon Ravan,

he surely would have been your saviour,
instead of me

Praise be to Hanuman!
And praise forever be to Jatayu,

whose death will be remembered
by the Vaalakhilya for all eternity!

Hanuman... I think we should talk

Hey, wait up! Don't leave me behind!

What kind of birds are those?

Praise be to Indra! Praise be to Hanuman!
And praise forever be to Jatayu,

whose death will be remembered
by the Vaalakhilya for all eternity!

Well, those were some weird talking birds
Must be parrots

Something is weird about this

This is strange!

Jatayu!

Grab my hand, Nal!
Mother will be furious if you die!

This is so not good
